LETTER FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR It has been a wet spring but it hasn’t dampened the spirits of Lee’s Summit. I hope you and your family have already been enjoying the great, special events your parks department offers each summer. Concerts, fireworks, movies in the parks, bike rides, runs, and the after dark pool parties are all a part of the special events planned for you. Three community centers, 70+ miles of trails, 26 parks and thousands of classes and programs are also available for your enjoyment. LSPR is again hosting “Summer of Fun”. The free events included a new event “Folk Fest” which took place on June 19. Then “Jamaican Jam” is held on July 17 and the “Blues & Jazz Fest” is set for August 7. For all the upcoming events, visit summeroffun.net. The 34th Annual “Night Flight 5K” in partnership with Lee’s Summit Medical Center was held the evening of June 12. Over 310 participants of all ages ran (or walked) from Harris Park through downtown Lee’s Summit and back and then jumped in Summit Waves for a post 5K swim. Tour de Lakes held on June 27 is a Lee’s Summit “signature event” and has become a major regional ride with over 725 cyclists. The ride allows for all levels of experience with a 10, 32, 55 and 63 mile ride taken around several of Lee’s Summit’s beautiful lakes. It was a gourgeous day. Our most significant accomplishment last year was the renovation of Lea McKeighan Park South. It has become one of if not the most popular parks in the park system with the latest in playground design and equipment, but there is more… • Sylvia Bailey Farm Park: For the second season, 50 Lee’s Summit Gardeners are busy caring for their vegetables and flowers. In addition the corn has been planted just in time to be ready for our fall festival activities and Corn Maze – YES! It is back along with some fun themed weekends! Check out summeroffun.net for all of those activities. • Upper Banner Park: A new playground and shelter have been installed and have already been well used and enjoyed by not only the surrounding neighborhood but by others throughout the community wanting somewhere new to host a birthday party or try one of the fastest growing sports – picklball.
• Lea McKeighan North: Master planning for additional renovations will start this summer. Be a part of the planning process as we reach out to our patrons to help us develop the new areas. • Miller J. Fields Park: Renovations continue with t h e walking trail and ball fields already completed. Currently the new splash pad, shelters, restrooms and playground are under construction. • The repurposing of Legacy Park Community Center and Gamber Community Center which took place late last year has been well received. Increased fitness space at both facilities have allowed for increased memberships and additional fitness opportunities including “Fitness OnDemand” at Legacy Park Community Center and extended operating hours at Gamber Community Center. Did you know that LSPR receives $3.0 million a year from our 16 cent property tax which has not increased since it was passed to support parks and recreation in 1970. How do you operate/fund a 1200 acre system with 26 neighborhood parks, 70+ miles of trails, three community centers, a water park, 41 full time employees, hundreds of part-time employees and over 1 million patrons with a tax that was passed 45 years ago? With citizens willing to: pay fees for services, volunteer as coaches, park pals etc, and businesses like Lee’s Summit Medical Center and Hansen Orthodontic Specialists expressing the value of parks and recreation through their sponsorships. Our Friend of the Parks program in tandem with the “DID YOU KNOW” Campaign continues to grow. LSPR hosts three free events for our “Friends” annually. I hope you will join over 5,500 of your friends and neighbors and 66 area businesses and become a Friend of the Parks before summer ends so you can continue to learn facts about the value and benefits of a quality parks and recreation system and get great coupons, deals and invitations to special events. This program, created and copyrighted by Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation, has now been adopted by the Missouri Parks and Recreation Assocation as well Kansas, Oklahoma, Minnesota and now Alaska. Did you know that without you, our park system would not be what it is today. Thank YOU!
