The 2014 Adopt-A-Spot project sponsored by LSBC will help beautify the intersection of 50 Highway and 3rd Street. In the next few months, the current grass and weeds will be replaced with shorter native grasses and wildflower patches. Landscape Contest entries were judged June 21-22, and the winners will be presented their awards at an August City Council Meeting. A reception for the participants will follow the meeting and feature a powerpoint presentation of all eighteen entries. The Lee’s Summit Gateway Project, envisioned by the Beautification Commission in 2005, and followed up with funding for a Gateway Master Plan in 2008, will see the first Gateway to Lee’s Summit constructed in 2014. The first entry will be along I-470 between the View High Drive and Pryor Road Exits on the South side of I-470.

LEGACY PARK COMMUNITY CENTER. You spoke and we listened! Legacy Park Community Center and the Gamber Center are growing to accommodate the needs of our community. Over the last year staff has been meeting with focus groups to find out how we can better serve their needs through these facilities. The results allowed the Park Board to make important decisions about the future uses of each facility. The changes that are a comin’ will include increased fitness space at both facilities. Legacy Park Community Center will eliminate the community rooms and convert them into group fitness space, including a new cycle studio, a group exercise room to accommodate up to 50 class participants and be home to the

staffing. On a bittersweet note, we have three longtime employees who have announced their retirement plans. Scott Anderson, Superintendent of Park Operatons has been with the department for 25 years. His well deserved retirement began on July 1. Bill Rust has been with the department for 22 years as a maintenance supervisor and Cemetery Sexton and will begin spending more time in his own yard come August. Donna Hicks, our Administrative Services Coordinator will be rounding out her 15th year with retirement at the end of December. We have been blessed to have all three of these dedicated and talented professionals working for our community. Their contributions to our park system are too numerous to mention here but will be highlighted at individual celebrations.

Miller J. Fields Park. Master planning for the renovation has been completed and construction drawings are being developed. Features for this park will include walking trails, spray ground, renovated ball fields, shelter, restrooms and renovated playground.

Lea McKeighan North. Four lighted outdoor volleyball courts have been added. The master plan for this park will be completed this fall and will include batting cages, bouldering courses, ropes courses, zip lines, ice skating and other open space activities.

GAMBER “COMMUNITY” CENTER. The Gamber Center has always been a multi-generational community center and now the name will reflect that. We will transform the current fitness room to a cardio workout center with 10 new cardio pieces. The former computer lab will house strength and weight equipment. To accommodate the growing demand from our fitness patrons, the new Gamber Community Center will expand its operating hours: Monday - Thursday 6am - 9pm; Friday 6am - 6pm; Sat. 7am 4pm and Sundays noon-6pm beginning November 1. The Gamber Community Center will continue to be a great place to rent to host special events or meetings with three classrooms and a ballroom with seating for 200.

Sylvia Bailey Farm Park moved forward this year with the development of a community garden area. 46 Lee’s Summit Garderners are busy caring for their vegetables and flowers. The “fruit orchards” are growing but of course, this is not a full scale orchard, just a small “demonstration” plot.

new fitness-on-demand kiosk. The current aerobics room will be converted into a cardio studio with 32 pieces of cardio equipment. A new functional fitness piece will be added to the wellness floor to enhance our strength equipment and the current cycle studio will be transformed into an assessment room for personal trainers as well as serve as an area that can be utilized by patrons for stretching and abdominal work.

CHANGES. When people ask what kind of music I listen to, it is difficult to answer because I enjoy a wide variety depending on my mood, location or even company. But right now, the infamous Bob Dylan is stuck in my mind because of his lyrics “I feel a change comin’ on and the fourth part of the day’s already gone”. That is exactly how it feels in your parks department right now! Lots of changes and practically all of them are due to requests you have made! I will attempt to share the most signficant, most recent and most soon to come below.

Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery Corner What have you done for me lately?

L

ee’s Summit Parks and Recreation began managing the Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery in 1993. This August, the Cemetery Sexton, Bill Rust, who has been an employee since 1992 will be retiring. So it seems appropriate to do a review of the improvements that have occured at this very visible location since LSPR and Bill took over management of this very important community resource. Most of these improvements were made by our own parks maintenance staff. Cemetery Grounds • Removed juniper hedge and broken sidewalk along Third Street • Removed rusted chain link fence • Installed black aluminum fencing • Installed 24 period security lighting standards • Sandblasted and repainted original Cemetery sign and placed in southeast corner • Added tree plantings and landscape beds on southwest, southeast and northeast corners • Improved drainage problems in the northwest corner • Improved turf throughout • Installed a soil bunker • Added benches and trash receptacles • Installed a message board for self-guided tours • Repaved roads, widened road intersections and added bollards to three intersections and street signs to all streets Cemetery Administrative Building • New roof, siding and windows • Remodeled Cemetery office to include a meeting room and ADA restroom • New sewer connection from building to street Revenue Additions • Split walkway graves to sell as two spaces • Added a cremation grave row • Added a row of graves along the Highway 291 side of Cemetery • Installed a total of 4 columbariums • Monument sales and installation • Created Cemetery Fund • Managed two grave revestments of 1,000 grave spaces to sell Cemetery Record Keeping • Installed a Cemetery information management system • Created a Cemetery website • Installed an interactive map link to the website
