letter from the administrator Fall Greetings Lee’s Summit When you receive this publication, Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation has already offered over eleven special events this summer with more to come. Between concerts, bike rides (Tour de Lakes had close to 800 riders), runs, after dark pool parties and even a fishing derby we hope that you have found a few of these events enjoyable escapes from the trials and tribulations of your busy lives. In addition to special events, your LSPR staff and board have been engaged in providing many other activities that enhance your quality of life by improving health and wellness, protecting and nurturing our natural environment, spurring economic activity, bringing our citizens together and creating a sense of community and building our cultural arts opportunities. We are excited about our new community wellness program RevUP and pleased to announce new lower pricing thanks to a great partnership with Lee’s Summit Medical Center and Centerpoint Medical Center. Having these two outstanding medical organizations as partners brings substantial expertise and other resources to our efforts. Ultimately it is our goal to further these programs at little or no cost for participants. Well known “man about town” Carl Chinnery was one of our first participants and has made amazing progress in his pursuit of fitness. He recently won his division in the Night Flight 5K Run, co-sponsored by Lee’s Summit Medical Center. Another success story is Lee’s Summit Police Officer, Robert Conard who lost 38 lbs in the first 8 weeks of RevUP. Not only has he made drastic changes in his lifestyle, he is also teaching his family, along with others at LSPD about healthy changes to make. “We have all, based upon this program, changed habits, and are on a path to a happier and healthier life,” says Conard. For details about RevUP turn to page 28. Recently the Parks, Construction and Operations building located in Legacy Park was renamed the Scott Anderson/Gary Welty Park Construction and Operations Center. Scott Anderson, Superintendent of Park Operations and Gary Welty, Superintendent of Park Construction were surprised by this decision by the Park Board and very pleased if not a bit embarrassed as neither look for accolades or praise despite their immeasurable contributions to our community over the past 20 years. Specifically, the self contained 20,000 square foot construction and operations center was constructed in-house and saved the department $1.4 million in construction expense. During their tenure our department has also added 20 neighborhood parks, 60 miles of trails and 500 acres of park land. One of our most visible current endeavors is the renovation of Lea McKeighan South located at Douglas and Chipman Roads. The new design and
development is slated to be completed in the spring of 2013 and will be a model of environmental sustainability with innovative stormwater management, native landscaping & energy efficient lighting. Some of the amenities will include an adventure play area, climbing rocks, multi-use trails, reflecting pond and brook, a shelter and restrooms as well as a special commemorative area to recognize the rich history of the park. Other important additions we are making in the park system include adding practice/game space for boys baseball, youth soccer and girls softball at Legacy Park, adding 50 acres of park land along Sampson Road, and another ten acres off Douglas (to be used for our second dog park), renovation to our downtown planting areas and adding a fishing dock at Legacy Park. These renovations are part of “Legacy for To m o r r o w and Beyond” made possible by the 2008 passing of the 1/8 cent park sales tax. On a more serious note we are constantly watching the national dialogue and medical research that is related to issues with youth and adult sports programs. At the top of those issues is the short term and long term damage of concussions. For our part we have begun the process of creating a dialogue with our health care professionals, schools, parks and recreation staff and volunteer youth sports associations. If for no other reason we need our parents and volunteers to have the latest and best information about the dangers and the “best practices” to minimize them. We mentioned above the many special events that have been offered just in the past couple of months. These not only advance exposure to the cultural arts, create opportunities for community connectivity and development and our community health and wellness but they also provide economic activity. “Did You Know” our three downtown concerts cost about $30,000. However, over 15,000 people will attend these events spending over $300,000 in our restaurants and other businesses in our community. Not a bad return on investment (ROI). I hope you will join almost 3,000 of your friends and neighbors and become a Friend of the Parks and learn not only more facts (like the one mentioned above) about the value and benefits of a quality parks and recreation system but also get great discounts and invitations to special events just for our friends. Have a great fall.

Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery Corner
FRIENDS OF THE PARKS
THEIR FINAL RESTING PLACE
PARKS ARE MORE THAN FUN & GAMES
A
t the present time there are 1,086 known veterans buried in the Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery. Wars that are represented are Civil war, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War and the Vietnam War. There are many who have not been identified as veterans for one reason or another. Approximately 125 Civil War veterans are buried in the Cemetery. Most were born in the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania. Most of the inhabitants of the Lee’s Summit area before the War were from the South and after the War most were from the North. Several of the members of Quantrill’s Raiders are among the veterans buried in the Cemetery. Among them are George and Oliver Shepherd, Thomas Coleman Younger. Most of the Civil War veterans are from the North moving into the area after the Civil War. 3 known veterans from the Spanish American War of 1898 are interred in the Cemetery and 1 veteran fought in the Banana War of 1934-1935. World War I has 113 veterans and World War II has 339 and make up most of the veterans of foreign wars, 65 who fought in the Korean War and 31 from the Vietnam War. The rest of the veterans do not have any record of having fought in any wars. The local VFW members along with help of local volunteers are the people responsible for the beautiful Avenue of flags that are presented around the perimeter of the Cemetery on Memorial Weekend. The VFW cleans, stores, labels the flags with the veteran’s name. The large casket flags are given to the VFW by family’s who received them from the Veterans Administration. The VFW also places small American flags on the graves of all the veterans in the Cemetery.
The Historical Cemetery Corner is written by Bill Rust, Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery Sexton. Visit www.lsparks.net for an interactive map of the cemetery, a great tool for locating grave spaces.
