A favorite of mine was seeing the Lee’s Summit Journal’s publisher and his daughter enjoy the Father Daughter Dance along with hundreds of other dads
Last week I received an especially gratifying email from the Kellys’ with a spontaneous testimonial of how the Gamber Center had played a part in this Lee’s Summit couple getting back in shape. This picture is priceless.

Pat Shepard wanted to make sure we knew that our Cemetery Sexton, Bill Rust, maintains the planter boxes at the Gamber Center so well that the “fruits of his labor” were actually purchased by patrons. They included cucumbers, lettuces, onions, peppers, tomatoes and more. This was not part of his job description but he took the lead and made it special.
Gary Welty shares that he enjoys watching the unbridled joy of dog owners and their dogs when they unleash themselves at “Happy Tails” park. Gary helped design and build this park.

Ryan Gibson expressed his thanks to the Service Reps at Harris Park for their work on the Pint Size Parties. He says they end up being way better than if it had just been him planning them. They research craft ideas or games based on the theme of the party and they generally do the room decorating for me as well. They do a great job that is way “above and beyond”.
By the way, how do you make a maintenance guy uncomfortable? Put him in an Easter Bunny costume for 3 hours while child after child poses with him for photos. Devin Wetzel volunteers his time each year to do this he has also been spotted In a Snowman costume. There are many more acts of kindness I see between our staff and the public we serve.

Tede Price shared “Ray at the Gamber Center is not only an excellent employee but also kind and helpful. After the father daughter dance, I had to get the LSPR van and load all the pipe and drape and take it back over to Harris Park. The van was covered in ice from the previous nights storm. I had started it and began scrapping when all the sudden Ray appears offering to help – of course I argued, but he wouldn’t budge. He definitely helped wrap up the evening on an even higher note!”
Ryan also shared: “All I said was - it sure would be great to have “real” basketball goals for Itty Bitty and Pee Wee Basketball. Next thing I knew two of the maintenance guys, Steve and Kevin, had whipped up a prototype of a lower goal that fits on the regular goal - they are amazing and we are receiving rave reviews from the parents”.

It started with a hand written, (which is rare these days) thank you note from a young Lee’s Summit citizen. He had taken the time to scribe a letter to me personally to let us know how much he enjoyed the new Lea McKeighan South Park. That note reminded all of us, from staff to the Park Board, why we have chosen careers or commitments in parks and recreation. It also set in motion a focus on these “little big things”. Here are a few of them:
and daughters, each creating memories for a lifetime.

This section of the Illustrated is often dedicated to all the exciting special events and projects the department is engaged in doing in Lee’s Summit –like the new dog park, community gardens or Lea McKeighan South. This time I’d like to take this opportunity to share some of the “little big things” that go on in your parks and recreation department. I once read “enjoy the little things in life for one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things”.

PARK OPERATIONS & CONSTRUCTION
What a privilege it is to work and play in such a wonderful city filled with its secret ingredient, ITS PEOPLE! Take some time this spring for “the little big things”. Maybe it’s the new bird watching class for your child, or the new Zentangle class for adults – two great opportunities to stop and pay attention to “the little things”. Maybe it’s a photography class that can teach you to more quickly spot “the little things” or an unplanned, unplugged, picnic in a park. Your staff and volunteers work hard to make sure there are plenty of “little things” to be enjoyed, so take advantage of them!

Picture this...
T
he Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery, when founded, was located east of the town of Strother. A dirt road from the downtown area of town called the Cemetery Road brought citizens out into the country to the Cemetery. The dirt road continued past the Cemetery and turned left at the southeast corner and again turned east where Big Lots and Westlake Hardware now are located. It continued east to what is now NE Westwind Drive and ended at the entrance gate to what was then “Langsford Farm”.

The current Independence Avenue was the dirt road that citizens traveled to get to Independence, MO. Second Street and Langsford Road nor Highway 291 existed. Second Street was developed in the 1950’s and the highway was constructed in the 1970’s. Within the Cemetery perimeters, the three north/south grass roadways were platted in the original Cemetery plans. In the 1970’s the roads were covered with asphalt. Also included were two grass walkways that ran north/south between the roads now named Dahlia and Foxglove and Foxglove and Hibiscus. The walkways made it possible for people to enter the family lots without walking on graves. Four additional roads were platted as the number of additions grew. Today, those roadways have been sold as grave spaces along with the grass walkways, one of which is used for infant graves and the other is for cremation graves. At that time, the north crossroad exited in the northwest corner of the cemetery, but with the construction of the new intersection at Independence Avenue and Langsford Road the exit was moved to the present location. The Cemetery office which also served as the maintenance shed, was originally located in a small building on the east side of the Cemetery. The date of the move to its present location is not known. The Historical Cemetery Corner is written by Bill Rust, Lee’s Summit Historical Cemetery Sexton.
