LENEXA CIVIC CENTER PROJECT UPDATE A lot of progress is being made on the Civic Center Project. The parking garage has all pieces in place and is the building most near completion. The exterior masonry and glass on the Lenexa Rec Center’s north and west sides are complete, and Winchester Street is nearly complete to the west. You can see one or two thrilling features as you walk or drive along 87th Street Parkway – the two 40foot speed slides are mostly installed! If you’re as excited as we are, look for information on Rec Center memberships in February’s issue of TownTalk. At City Hall, the Community Forum floor’s concrete has been poured. The second floor, home to the City Hall lobby, a public meeting room and demonstration/ events kitchen, is also taking shape as studs and drywall are installed. City Hall offices and the university spaces are being framed in now — Look for an announcement of our educational partner after the first of the year. One of the most exciting things happening isn’t even taking place at the project site! Star Signs of Lawrence is fabricating the 28-foot tall Public Market blade sign, which will be visible from 87th Street Parkway. Internally lit with LEDs, the Market sign will be a beacon for folks trying to find their way to our local merchants in the market.

Residents and visitors will notice the sign on the north side of the building when traveling on 87th Street Parkway. When snow falls in Lenexa, our snow plow crews work hard to ensure our roads are safe and clear. Our goal is to have all roads, including cul-de-sacs, cleared within 48 hours of the end of a winter storm. You can help us by doing the following: • Follow our plowing progress at Lenexa.com/Snow and on social media. We post periodic updates during plowing operations. • Move cars off the road ahead of winter storms. This allows us to plow the entire width of your street. We appreciate your patience as our crews work. If after 48 hours you believe your street was missed, please report it to us at Lenexa.com/311.

#JOCOGATEWAY NEARLY COMPLETE

Municipal Services Department earns re-accreditation Lenexa’s Municipal Services Department was recently accredited for the fourth time by the American Public Works Association with 100 percent full compliance in all practices reviewed. We were first accredited in 2004 and have been re-accredited in 2008, 2012 and 2016.

Post-construction aerial view of I-35/I-435 interchange looking southwest. After 2.5 years and $288 million, the Kansas Department of Transportation and Gateway Interchange Constructors have finished all major K-10/I-435/I-35 highway interchange improvements planned as part of the Johnson County Gateway Phase 2 Project. They address more than 90 percent of traffic problems drivers experience today and 50 percent of problems anticipated for the next quarter century. While Phase 2 construction is substantially complete, drivers may see some additional median and finish work on eastbound and westbound I-435 and near the loop ramps at I-35 and I-435 through the end of the year, weather permitting. In spring 2017, additional seeding and sod work will take place in limited locations throughout the project area. At this time, no interstate closures are planned for the Johnson County Gateway Project in 2017, with only some finish work possible on city streets. The K-10/I-435/I-35 interchange is a critical hub for transportation and economic growth in both the region and the state. A future Phase 3 of the Johnson County Gateway Project would finish the rest of the improvements envisioned for the area. There is no schedule or funding available to proceed with Phase 3. Learn more at jocogateway.com.

To be accredited, our standards, practices and policies must be consistent with nationally accepted professional standards and demonstrate our commitment to continuous improvement in the delivery of exceptional service to our community. Throughout the years, this process has improved our effectiveness, promoted teamwork and staff development and improved communication among our staff members. During the most recent re-accreditation, the department’s career development matrix and use of technology were praised as model practices, which means they will be shared with other agencies across the country and used as guidelines. To ensure continued development and adherence to APWA’s standards, Municipal Services files an update every two years and is required to be re-accredited every four years.
