Meet our co-chairs Vision 2040's steering committee will be led by a pair of citizen co-chairs: Stacy Knipp and Mike Stein. They'll work closely with two Lenexa City staff members - Sean McLaughlin from the Legal Department and Logan Wagler from Parks & Recreation - to lead this project. Pictured (from left) are Sean, Logan, Stacy and Mike.
CHARTING A COURSE FOR THE FUTURE OF LENEXA Vision 2040 challenges participants to think past today's needs to the future's opportunities It's an exciting time to live and work in Lenexa: a team of citizens is working to chart the future of your city for the next 20 years, and we need your input! Vision 2040, a long-term community planning process that will build off the successes of Vision 2020 and Vision 2030, kicked off in late spring. Guided by Lenexa-based Shockey Consulting, the next several months will bring collaborative experiences and extensive fact-finding exercises to craft a final plan that inspires and guides Lenexa leaders over the coming decades. MAY THROUGH JUNE: Laying the foundation for a smart, strategic process More than 145 residents volunteered to form a steering committee and several task forces. Throughout this process, they will discuss data, studies, community surveys, existing visioning plans and future trends to determine how that might influence the future of Lenexa. Examining Lenexa's opportunities and challenges - and how those will shift over the next 20 years - will help the committee and task forces to set ambitious but practical goals. JUNE THROUGH SEPTEMBER: Here's where your ideas come in! Vision 2040 is designed to be a community-driven process, and there will be plenty of opportunity for Lenexa residents to get involved. Whether you spot a survey on social media or a community engagement booth at a festival, be sure to take advantage of these chances to help create the Lenexa you want to see in 2040. The participatory engagement phase of this process will culminate in a community Vision Summit. OCTOBER THROUGH NOVEMBER: A well-crafted plan for Lenexa's future With their research wrapped up and plenty of community input in hand, the steering committee will finalize a plan and present it to the City Council for adoption. Once adopted by the Council, these few months of planning will transform into 20 years of action, bringing your vision for the Lenexa of 2040 to life. FOLLOW VISION 2040'S PROGRESS: LENEXA.COM/VISION 2040 • #LENEXA2040
Get involved There will be dozens of ways for Lenexans to share their ideas and provide input that will shape the final Vision 2040 plan. Meet the community engagement team Look for Vision 2040 volunteers at events where the community engagement team will ask for your input into Lenexa's future. Participate in the Vision Summit In late September, Lenexa will host an interactive community workshop where Steven Ames, futurist, will provide a look into Lenexa's future. Engage online Watch Lenexa's social media for links to surveys and chances to respond to brief questions from the task forces and steering committee. Members of the Lenexa Fire Department learned the LFD had received a unanimous vote of approval from the Commission of Fire Accreditation International in July 2017. This accreditation, along with Lenexa's designation as an Insurance Services Class 1 community, sets the LFD apart as one of the top fire protection agencies in the United States.
LENEXA FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES TOP NATIONAL HONORS FOR FIRE PROTECTION Did you know that, as a Lenexa resident, you live in one of the safest cities in the United States when it comes to fire protection? The Lenexa Fire Department (LFD) has been named an Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class 1 community for the second time in four years. This is the highest rating awarded by the ISO, which measures the quality and effectiveness of municipal fire protection using objective, countrywide standards. Less than a quarter of one percent of fire departments earn this rating. ISO ratings are used to help establish commercial insurance rates. This can result in lower insurance premiums for many city residents and businesses. This isn't the only major honor the LFD has received in the last year: in July 2017, Lenexa was accredited by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI). The LFD was first accredited in 2002 and was the first

department in Kansas to earn this distinction. The department also received accreditation in 2007 and 2012. Just 247 agencies around the world have been accredited by CFAI, which enables agencies to examine past, current and future service levels and internal performance and compare them to current research and industry best practices. This process helps agencies become more efficient and effective in the delivery of emergency services. Only 60 fire organizations in the world have an ISO Class 1 rating and are accredited by the Commission of Fire Accreditation International, designating Lenexa as one of the world's best fire protection organizations. "Together, the Commission on Fire Accreditation International designation and Insurance Services Office highest rating verifies and validates our goal of continuous organizational improvement," said Lenexa Fire Chief Lonny Owens.
Veteran police officer named Lenexa's Employee of the Year Positive attitude, teamwork mentality and empathy are just a few of the qualities that factored into Master Police Officer Brad Martens' selection as the City of Lenexa's 2017 Employee of the Year. Brad began his career with the Lenexa Police Department in 1990 and has consistently demonstrated the values of the Police Department and the City of Lenexa. His assignments have included patrol officer, school resource officer, detective, field training officer and crisis negotiator. "Brad embodies the values of a police officer and truly cares about the citizens of this community," said Police Chief Tom Hongslo. "He goes above and beyond to help them in any way that he can. Brad is highly gifted in his ability to communicate with others and de-escalate situations. He is commonly called upon to negotiate with troubled individuals in crisis. Brad is a mentor and leader and has had a positive impact on the community and the Police Department that is immeasurable." The Employee of the Year is chosen each year from more than 500 professionals dedicated to community service. The 2017 award was announced at an employee luncheon, where a number of other staff members were also honored for their work. You can view a list of the honorees at Lenexa.com.
ROSE'S POND
NEW LIONS MEMORIAL SHELTER NEW GRAND PAVILION
RESTORED WELL
NEW CENTRAL RESTROOMS
The Grand Pavilion is a beautiful location for large gatherings. The new shelter seats up to 216 guests and can accomodate up to 225 people. Electricity, lighting, 27 8-foot tables, a grill and free Wi-Fi are available.
NEW SHELTERS, TRAILS & UPGRADES COME TO SAR-KO-PAR TRAILS PARK An area of Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park that wasn't previously open to the public is now home to stunning new facilities, trails and historic elements ready for residents and visitors to enjoy. Work began in May 2017 on new amenities and enhancements in the center of the park. Opening up this space was identified as the top priority for the park among residents and patrons through a Park Master Plan. The focal point of the new improvements is the Grand Pavilion, the largest open-air outdoor structure in Lenexa's parks system. An overlook deck at the shelter offers stunning views of Rose's Pond. The nearby Lions Memorial Shelter and central restrooms were replaced, and new trails wind around the site's facilities and connect to the park's existing trails.
Free Wi-Fi is also now available at the new shelters and playground. Other upgrades to the park include parking improvements, replacement of a reinforced box culvert near the skate park and landscaping and drainage updates. A new interpretive sign tells the story of the Rose family, Bob and Dorothy Rose and their seven children, who once lived on the site of the park upgrades. The Roses bought the 50-acre farm at the corner of Lackman and 87th Street in 1958. They started selling pieces of the farm in the1970s and chose to donate the 3-acre pond and sell two major pieces to the City of Lenexa in 1974 and 1983. The Roses' red barn still stands on the site, as does the family's well, which was restored as part of this project.
At a dedication event May 9, attendees enjoyed the way the Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park improvements blended new amenities, like shelters and trails, with elements from the park's history, like this restored well.
Who was Sar-Ko-Par?
Sar-Ko-Par was a Creek Indian warrior who served in the U.S. military in the Creek War of 1836. He died in 1849. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln deeded 150 acres of land to Sar-Ko-Par's heirs in payment for his military service. About 53 acres of that land is now Sar-KoPar Trails Park. Learn more about the park's past in our Living Lenexa History series at Lenexa.com/History.

SUMMER TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS FROM THE LENEXA POLICE DEPARTMENT Keep these safety tips in mind before you head out on your summer adventures! • Have a trusted friend or neighbor regularly check on your home while you’re away. • When staying at a hotel, never store valuables or electronics in your car overnight. Instead, take them with you inside. • Monitor your banking and credit card statements to make sure there has been no fraudulent activity from your travels.
• Before taking a road trip, let your mechanic know and have your vehicle serviced so you don't end up stranded on the side of the road! • Posting photos and updates on social media while you are away tells would-be burglars that your home is unoccupied. Consider waiting until you return home to share your photos online.
• Legality and case law pertaining to police use of force. • Internal investigation process when force is used by Lenexa police. • The different force options and how they are applied. • How Lenexa officers are trained and equipped to use force.

Two events are scheduled for this summer: Saturday, June 30, and Wednesday, July 11, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Little Mill Creek Park. Families are welcome! Children must be age 5 or older, and kids under age 15 must be supervised by an adult. Sign up at Lenexa.com/Volunteer.
KEEP POLLUTANTS OUT OF STREAMS Two common sources of stream pollutants might be coming from your home.
POLICE USE OF FORCE CLASS SET FOR JUNE 16 The Lenexa Police Department is hosting an informational class for citizens on police use of force. This four-hour class will take place on Saturday, June 16, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Lenexa Police Station, 12500 W. 87th Street Parkway. The following topics will be covered:
PARTICIPATE IN AN UPCOMING STREAM CLEANUP EVENT
Pet waste is a main source of bacteria in our streams. Always pick it up in your yard and when taking your dog on walks.
Participants will have the opportunity to experience realistic scenarios in the Firearms Simulator* at the Police Station. There is no charge to attend, but class size will be limited. Participants must be residents of Johnson County, Kansas, and at least 18 years of age. To learn more, visit Lenexa.com/Police. *Does not involve real firearms or live ammunition.
Yard waste may not seem like a pollutant, but leaves and lawn clippings will decay, using up the oxygen in the water and adding excessive nutrients to the water supply.
REPORT ILLEGAL DUMPING If you notice a strange substance flowing into a storm drain inlet or spot someone pouring something into a storm sewer, report it by calling 913.477.7680 or submitting a service request at Lenexa.com/311.

QUICKTIPS: Regularly inspecting your lawn for sources of foul water prevents mosquito breeding, code violations Dirty, debris-filled water isn't just a smelly eyesore – it's a breeding ground for pesky, diseasecarrying mosquitoes. Foul water, including stagnant ponds or pools of water, is also considered to be a health nuisance violation. Here are a few tips from Community Standards staff to address common sources of standing water: • Tires may seem like a small source of foul water, but mosquito larvae can thrive in areas as small as a bottle cap. Tires should be
kept indoors or properly discarded. • Pools need to be properly filtered and treated to keep out leaves, dirt, algae and insects. • Tarps, especially pool covers, should be regularly emptied. • Garden ponds should incorporate a bubbler to keep the water moving or natural insect predators like fish or frogs. Concerns about foul water can be reported at Lenexa.com/311.
