LENEXA STAYS AHEAD OF THE CURVE ON STREET MAINTENANCE Take a look at the street in front of your home - there's a good chance it's been improved by the City of Lenexa within the last four years. Since 2014, Lenexa has treated 72 percent of residential streets to prolong their life and improve rideability. Preventative street maintenance consistently ranks as Lenexa residents' top priority in community surveys, and for good reason. Staying on top of road work doesn't just improve the look and rideability of neighborhood streets - it also prevents major costly, disruptive repairs down the road. "If the condition of the roadway reaches a certain point, it becomes more expensive to maintain and will ultimately need reconstruction," said Lenexa Municipal Services Director Nick Arena. "We try to stay ahead of the curve by applying surface treatments." Trying out new approaches to street resurfacing has helped us to cover more ground than ever. In recent years, Lenexa has turned to ultra-thin bonded asphalt surface (UBAS) as a go-to treatment for residential streets. "UBAS has become a viable treatment based on a few factors," Arena said. "It improves the rideability of the street

with the mill before the surface treatment is applied, the surface treatment is smooth, and the cost of UBAS is comparable with other treatments we have performed in the past." UBAS consists of a thin, coarse aggregate mix placed over a special asphalt membrane. It's quick to apply, and you can drive on it soon afterward. For 2018, we're investing approximately $5 million in pavement maintenance work, including about 600,000 square yards of UBAS work in residential neighborhoods throughout the city. In addition to new surface treatments in these neighborhoods, deteriorating sidewalks and curbs will also be replaced. We'll release a map showing where maintenance work is planned at LenexaPavement.com. You can also keep up with which general neighborhoods will see work next by subscribing to Road Construction Alerts at Lenexa.com/Enews. If you have questions, contact Pavement Management Coordinator Stephen Mustain at smustain@lenexa.com or 913.515.9742.

PMP

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

PMP Year

I heard that my neighborhood street will receive new surface treatment. When will the street in front of my house be treated? The contractor will let you know when they'll be ready for your street via door hangers and signs. At this time, you'll want to make sure to keep your vehicle parked off the street. What do I do if my sprinkler system is damaged during this work? Our contractor will make repairs to your system. Submit a service request at Lenexa.com/311, and we'll coordinate the repairs at no charge to you. What should I do if there's a gap between the street and a recently repaired curb? You may notice a small gap between the gutter and street where the concrete was not fully filled after a repair. This is a normal part of the street treatment process. Within a few weeks, the contractor will return to the area to mill off the top 5/8" to 3/4" of pavement and apply new surface treatment to the top of the street and in the gap next to the gutter.

Lenexa shines in community survey Residents have once again revealed they are tremendously satisfied with the quality of services, appearance, image and value provided by the City of Lenexa. Randomly selected residents rated their satisfaction about major services and programs provided by the city. The seven-page survey was administered by ETC Institute during the last two months of 2017. A total of 813 citizens

responded, far exceeding the number needed for statistically valid results. Results are compared to how Lenexa residents responded in previous years, as well as benchmarked to metropolitan and national data. "Once again, Lenexa shines when it comes to overall citizen satisfaction," said Chris Tatham, ETC Institute CEO.
