FIRE PARTNERSHIPS MAKE LENEXA, NEIGHBORS SAFER Recent major fires in Lenexa and surrounding communities proved the value of having neighboring agencies prepared to come to each other’s aid. In 2010, each city and fire district in Johnson County agreed to an interlocal cooperation agreement enabling fire departments to share resources through automatic aid for fire suppression, emergency medical and other services. “As the demand for emergency services continues to increase with growth, the interlocal cooperation agreement is a critical element to provide services to our community,” said Lenexa Fire Chief Lonny Owens. Assisting during major incidents Recent incidents such as the fires at Overland Park’s CityPlace Apartments and Lenexa’s Retreat at Mill Creek Apartments have required from seven to 55 fire vehicles, and many chief officers. With the interlocal agreement, emergency response capability is greatly enhanced due to assistance from neighboring agencies.

Overlapping emergencies Lenexa has five fire stations with eight units staffed daily. A typical building fire in Lenexa requires six units. Without the supplemental resources provided by the interlocal agreement, just one fire apparatus and squad unit would remain available to respond to other Lenexa incidents during a building fire. Using resources efficiently The Johnson County Emergency Communications Center (JCECC) dispatches all departments in the county. The interlocal agreement gives JCECC the authority to automatically assign the closest and most appropriate unit to serious medical incidents and up to two fire apparatus to multicompany incidents like building fires and vehicle accidents that require extrication. Training together Since 2010, Overland Park, Lenexa, Olathe and Shawnee firefighters have worked together almost daily. As part of the agreement, each department trains together, focusing on industry best practices, incident command and firefighter safety.

LENEXA PUBLIC MARKET

LENEXA REC CENTER

LENEXA CITY HALL

Lenexa civic campus opens to the public July 31 LENEXA CITY HALL, PUBLIC MARKET AND REC CENTER TO CELEBRATE WITH RIBBON-CUTTING After 20 years of dreaming, planning and building, the facilities at the Lenexa civic campus will be ready to open to the public July 31. The idea for a new walkable, mixed-use downtown was at the heart of Vision 2020, a citizen-led strategic planning process completed in 1997. These concepts have culminated in the Lenexa civic campus, an innovative district that incorporates a new City Hall, Lenexa Rec Center, Lenexa Public Market and outdoor gathering spaces. “I believe our residents will be extremely proud of the new facilities,” said Todd Pelham, deputy city administrator and project manager. “We have made every effort to create a unique gathering space that has something for everyone. We can’t wait to let everybody start using these civic assets.” SEPTEMBER TO REMEMBER We’ll celebrate the new campus with a grand opening this fall, dubbed “September to Remember.” This memorable month-long celebration will highlight all the Lenexa City Center has to offer, with live performances, food trucks, treats from Public Market vendors, kids activities, games, cooking demonstrations, touch-a-truck and so much more! A special edition of TownTalk will arrive in your mailbox in mid-August outlining dozens of fun events planned for September. Additional information is available at Lenexa.com/September.

JOIN US JULY 31 FOR A RIBBON-CUTTING EVENT To mark this historic occasion, you are invited to attend a short ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:30 a.m. July 31. The ceremony will take place in the Lenexa Commons – the outdoor space between City Hall, the Rec Center and the parking garage. City Hall and the Public Market will be open for business at 9:30 a.m. following the ceremony. The Lenexa Rec Center will be open for regular business hours starting this date as well (see page 5 for hours before July 31). LENEXA.COM/CIVICCAMPUS

POOL MID-SEASON PASSES Enjoy a summer of fun at all three outdoor Lenexa pools with a season pass! All new passes must be purchased in person at the Community Center between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. You must provide proof of residency to receive the resident discount on your season pass. For residents, a family pass is $110, an individual pass is $60 and a senior pass is $28. For nonresidents, a family pass is $175, an individual pass is $95 and a senior pass is $35.

QUICKTIPS: Keep an eye out for standing water after storms to prevent future flooding As summer storms roll through the city, a few puddles and water on the road are expected. But if you notice standing water in the road after a storm, it’s important to let us know. The large puddle you spotted could be a symptom of a problem with a storm drain in the area. Issues with ditches or driveway culverts can also cause flooding of streets and your lawn. To report standing water or problems with a drainage ditch or driveway culvert, call Municipal Services at 913.477.7880 or fill out a service request at Lenexa.com/311.

Mid-season passes go on sale July 17. For residents, a family mid-season pass is $55, an individual pass is $30 and a senior pass is $14. For nonresidents, a family mid-season pass is $87.50, an individual pass is $47.50 and a senior pass is $17.50.

ADAPTED POOL SEASON HOURS Ad Astra and Flat Rock Creek pools will close for the season at 6 p.m. Aug. 6. Indian Trails Pool will have an adapted schedule from Aug. 6 through Sept. 4. It will be open weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m. and weekends from noon to 7 p.m. September 4 will be the last day of the season at Indian Trails, with hours from noon to 6 p.m.

Aqua Toning: Uses resistance exercises intensified by the water and floatation devices to improve overall strength and muscular endurance while reducing compressive forces within the body.
