news in brief
2015 summer pool passes available
Fun new places to play Looking for a fun place to play? Check out Lenexa’s awesome playgrounds! About half of the city’s 30 different playgrounds have been replaced or updated thanks to funding from the 3/8-cent sales tax approved by voters in 2008. With this funding, nine playgrounds were updated in 2011 and 2013, and six playgrounds were replaced in 2014, including Kickapoo West and East, Na Nex Se, Mullen, Electric (2-5 year old playground), and Scouting parks. Also, a new destination playground, which features a 60-foot zip line, multi-level play tower, interactive elements, merry-go-round, two-story slides, Net Plex climbing structure, Oodle Swing and more, is being built at Little Mill Creek Park at 79th and Cottonwood streets (construction of the playground is shown in the photo above). Be sure to visit other exciting parks such as Black Hoof Park at 91st and Monticello Road. The north area of the park features a large capacity shelter with fire pit, trails, beautiful views and a destination play area that blends traditional play structures with natural play features including a play stream, climbing boulders, stepping stones, balance logs and more. Find more information on the city’s website.
Arts Council offers scholarships for graduating seniors Graduating high school seniors planning to attend college in the fall of 2015 are invited to apply for visual and performing art scholarships offered by the Lenexa Arts Council. The scholarship program aims to support Lenexa youth as they further their art education. To be eligible, students must live in Lenexa and submit a completed application by March 2. Applications and more information are available on the city’s website. Questions may be directed to Susanne Neely, Lenexa Arts Council liaison, at sneely@lenexa.com.
Pool passes are now available for the 2015 aquatic season. For acting early, you can reap the early bird reward of 10% off your pool pass if purchased by March 31, 2015. Passes may be purchased in person at the Community Center, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., and returning pass holders may purchase passes online. All pass holders must have a pass card at the time of entry, and updated photos are required for youth. If anyone on the pass has a considerable amount of change from the previous photo, we ask that new photos are taken for security and quality control. Resident passes are $110 for a family, $60 for an individual and $28 for seniors. Nonresident passes are $175 for a family, $95 for an individual and $35 for seniors.
Apply now for summer pool employment Looking for a summer job? Lenexa Parks and Recreation is now hiring for a variety of seasonal positions.
