EASTBOUND 87TH STREET PARKWAY

LENEXA REC CENTER FUTURE SITE OF LENEXA CITY CENTER LIBRARY BRANCH

Crews are hard at work enclosing the City Hall and Recreation Center buildings before cold weather sets in. If you drive by, you can see the brick, stone and glass going up on both buildings. Although construction of the parking garage started after the other two buildings, it’s nearly complete. The recent rains have kept the construction site pretty muddy, but the buildings are still on schedule to open next summer. We recently released an open call for Public Market merchants, so keep an eye out for announcements this fall and winter about which entrepreneurs will be coming to Lenexa!

PARKING GARAGE

Two of the unique pieces of our Civic Center Project are the Lenexa Public Market and the Lenexa Rec Center. Over the last few months, we have been developing their logos. The Lenexa Public Market logo reflects a style seen in other public markets across the country and the local flavor we’re hoping to attract. The Lenexa Rec Center logo nods to the blue and yellow of Lenexa’s logo while showing movement and excitement. Be on the lookout for these two logos as the buildings get closer to opening!

Federal grant helps replace firefighter safety gear Fighting fires can be hazardous work. A selfcontained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is the most critical piece of protective equipment that keeps firefighters safe. It’s a type of respirator that contains breathable compressed air and is used when working in areas filled with smoke, toxic gas or other contaminants. The Lenexa Fire Department recently partnered with four local fire departments to secure a $2 million grant through the Federal Emergency Management Association’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program to replace 300 pieces of SCBA equipment across the five agencies. The Olathe Fire Department will serve as the grant

administrator, and the other agencies include Johnson County Fire District #1, Lenexa Fire Department, Northwest Consolidated Fire District and Shawnee Fire Department. The grant funds will be used to evaluate and purchase replacement SCBA equipment, and then to jointly train all five agencies on how to use it. The grant requires a 10 percent match from each fire department. Local fire departments often work together closely at emergency

scenes. They use the same dispatch center, incident command procedures and fire hose connections. But each jurisdiction may have different protective gear for firefighters. Having SCBA equipment that is fully interchangeable between fire departments will improve coordination during fire events where every second counts. The FEMA grant provides substantial financial help to better protect the emergency responders who serve our community. SCBA equipment is expensive, and Lenexa will be able to replace 75 units, which could last 10–15 years. The end result is that three of Lenexa’s four closest neighbors will use the same protective gear.

MULTIPURPOSE FIRE VEHICLE NOW IN USE A heavy rescue vehicle is basically a specialized toolbox on wheels for fire services. When it came time to replace its heavy rescue apparatus, the Lenexa Fire Department sought a way to better allocate resources, increase efficiency, and reduce maintenance and replacement costs. The Fire Department worked with the city’s Municipal Services Department to outfit a four-wheel-drive truck chassis with a hydraulic lift arm that can transform into a variety of emergency response vehicles. A prototype hit the streets this summer, with two more on the way. Ultimately, we envision customizing a dozen or more truck bed types. The first three completed are: • A storage pod that can be dropped off at a house that has experienced fire damage. (lower left photo) • A utility truck bed for hauling large equipment. • A truck bed containing a 250-gallon water tank, pump and hose reel to help firefighters reach brush fires. (upper left photo) Lenexa knows of no other fire department that has created similar multipurpose vehicles. This flexible approach has saved the city 60 percent over what it would cost to purchase a traditional heavy rescue vehicle.

Get to know your snow plow drivers: Chip Voigts As snow season approaches, we sat down with snow plow driver Chip Voigts to talk about some of his experiences plowing snow in Lenexa. Chip has been driving snow plows for 14 years, which means he’s experienced both mild and snowy winters.

What is the most interesting thing you have seen when you were on snow plow duty? The winter when it snowed so much that we had to close College Boulevard west of Renner Boulevard. The snow was so deep that we had difficulty getting a snow plow through it. We had to use a loader and pile the snow on the sides.

When you know a big snowstorm is on the way, how do you prepare?

Snow plow driver Chip Voigts drives a snow plow during the Lenexa Municipal Services Snow Roadeo in September. This event gives drivers a chance to brush up on their skills before the winter snow season arrives.

We make sure that all of our trucks and resources are ready and available. Our crews know to get as much rest as possible. We keep a close eye on the weather forecasts. We keep in close contact with our weather service and arrive before the snow starts so we are prepared to treat the roads before it accumulates.

What is the hardest part about driving a snow plow? What is the most rewarding part? The hardest part is dealing with traffic and your surroundings. For example, mailboxes, street lights, parked cars and fire hydrants. When plowing, getting as close to the curb without going up in the yard. The

most rewarding part is when the streets of Lenexa are cleared safely and the public can get around town without any accidents.

Is it more challenging to remove a lot of snow or treat for ice? Removing a lot of snow is more challenging. The challenge is where to put it, especially in cul-de-sacs. On main arterials, the challenge is to clear the turn lanes and push back to corners so the public can see around.

How do you choose which streets to plow first? The city has a snow plan that is divided up into snow zones, and each driver is assigned a zone. We start with the main arterial streets and make sure they are clear. In the residential areas, we start with the major collector streets. Those are the ones in the subdivisions that connect the side streets and cul-de-sacs.

What do you wish residents would do to help make your job of removing snow easier? In the residential areas it would be helpful if they would not park their cars in the street, if possible. Leave their cars in the driveways until we clear the snow off of the street. On the arterial streets, it is the traffic. If the traffic would stay back away from the trucks and not try to get in between the trucks when we plow snow.

VOTERS DECIDE ON PUBLIC SAFETY ISSUES ON NOV. 8 Johnson County voters will be asked on Nov. 8 to vote on a quarter-cent public safety sales tax to fund a new courthouse to address safety and security issues for victims, families and jurors; accessibility challenges, and overcrowding due to the growing population.

2-D: First place – Bradford Athey, Green Felt Clerestory (colored pencil); second place – Debra Zahner, Divergent Boundaries (watercolor).

The sales tax would sunset in 10 years and would also fund a coroner facility.

3-D: First place – Marci Blank, BEST OF SHOW: Water Lily, Jennifer Podor. Summer Garden (fiber); second place – Kris Coyan, Turquoise Hearts (wood turn hollow form). #JOCOGATEWAY CONSTRUCTION WRAPS UP IN DECEMBER The Johnson County Gateway Phase 2 Project is in its final stages. The remaining work to finish includes the westbound I-435 collector-distributor road and the I-435 and Lackman Road interchange. Lackman Road: The ramps to and from westbound I-435 and Lackman Road have been closed since July 15 for reconstruction. Access from westbound I-435 to Lackman Road is scheduled to open in November via the new collector-distributor road currently under construction north of I-435 between the K-10 exit and I-35. As the eastbound collectordistributor road works now along the south edge of I-435, this road will be an access point for Lenexa. The single-lane closures on Lackman Road have now shifted to the right (or outside) lane of northbound Lackman Road only. This work will last through mid-October. Santa Fe Trail Drive: A full closure of Santa Fe Trail Drive at I-435 is scheduled for mid-October for 15 days to demolish a bridge above the road and complete pipe work beneath it. The signed detour will be 105th Street and/or 101st Street to Lackman Road. The southbound I-35 to eastbound I-435 ramp will reopen in midNovember. Eastbound I-435 in the final stages and all new lanes of traffic will reopen in November. At this time, all work on the Johnson County Gateway project is on schedule to be complete by Dec. 31, 2016. MULCH MOWING YOUR LEAVES WILL SAVE YOU TIME AND MONEY Lenexa is home to many beautiful trees which line our streets and shade our homes during the summer months. But when the weather turns cold and the leaves start to fall, they can become a landscaping nightmare. If left all winter long, wet piles of decomposing leaves can kill grass and make for a muddy mess in the spring. One way to take care

of falling leaves is to mulch mow them back into your lawn. Mulch mowing leaves returns nutrients back into your soil (lessening the need to add additional fertilizer), and you save time by not having to rake them into yard waste bags. Grass clippings and leaves should never be swept or blown into the

streets. Leaves that are piled at the curb will be bypassed because our sweeper equipment cannot remove man-made piles. Keeping leaves out of storm drains also helps reduce flood risks. If you haven’t tried mulch mowing before, we encourage you to give a chance this fall – we’re sure you’ll be glad you did!
