With Olympic year now finally upon us, we are celebrating achievement and endurance this spring with our Conquering the Antarctic concert tour, which concludes in London as part of the BBC’s Music Nation weekend. The concert celebrates and retells the story of Captain Scott’s expedition to the South Pole through music, words and photography, and features a stunning new commission by British composer Cecilia McDowall, Seventy Degrees Below Zero. We continue the Olympic theme with the return of our hugely popular family concert series Crash Bang Wallop! with two concerts at Cadogan Hall; an Olympic themed brass concert in May, preceded by Beatrix Potter’s much loved Tale of Peter Rabbit in March. Our informal concert series CLoSer continues in East London’s Village Underground with two concerts celebrating the range of the human voice and pushing the boundaries of experimental jazz. We’re delighted to be joined by the Holst Singers and jazz pianist Gwilym Simcock as guest artists for these concerts. We return as resident orchestra to the capital’s favourite opera festival, Opera Holland Park, in June, performing a diverse and eclectic range of operas. We are also delighted to join Tutti all’Opera for the UK premiere of German composer Christoph Gluck’s forgotten gem Il trionfo di Clelia at the Linbury Studio Theatre at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. Whether you are a regular City of London Sinfonia concert attender or joining us for the first time, we look forward to welcoming you warmly to our very special brand of music-making.

Mendelssohn’s Hebrides overture inspired by the composer’s youthful infatuation with Scotland, conjures up the legends and the rugged terrain of Scotland, while Haydn’s Symphony No 100 was the greatest of all his successes in England, due to its attractive themes and his captivating use of percussion. Tonight’s world premiere Music in the Marble, weaves a glorious tapestry of emotions, exploring power and darkness; hope and humour, and drawing inspiration from the sculptures chosen by commissioner Daniel Katz.

City of London Crash Bang Festival Lunchtime Wallop! Saturday 19 May Concert 12 noon – 1.00pm Wednesday 28 March 1.05 – 2.05pm St Andrew Holborn
Free, no booking required Gorecki Three Pieces in Old Style C.P.E. Bach Flute Concerto in D minor Mendelssohn String Symphony No 10 Martin Burgess violin Karen Jones flute This concert showcases music for string ensemble by some of Europe’s most prodigious composers. It brings together the precocious talent of Górecki who combines traditional materials with modern effects in his Three Pieces in Old Style, followed by the virtuosic Concerto for Flute in D Minor, written fairly early in the career of CPE Bach. Finally the exceptional talent of Mendelssohn, deconstructed in his String Symphony No 10 in B Minor, shows that, even as a teenager, the composer had a strong understanding and affinity with the string orchestra.
