Our 2015-16 season opens with a celebration of music written for dance from Rameau’s 18th-century re-imagining of the classical Pygmalion myth to Copland’s musical story of the US pioneers who explored the Appalachian mountains in the 19th century. The performance begins and ends with Debussy’s stunning L’aprés midi d’un faune in two different dance interpretations, alongside a unique take on Bach’s solo cello suites with clarinettist Michael Collins in what is the first ‘Bach RE:Imagining’ of the series. Part of City of London Sinfonia’s ground-breaking informal concert series, CLoSer is designed to appeal to those who like their music intimate, relaxed (and who enjoy a glass of wine while listening!).

Stephen Layton Conductor Stephen Farr Harpsichord Elin Manahan Thomas Soprano Alex Potter Countertenor City of London Sinfonia

Join us in the historic surroundings of Southwark Cathedral as we bring to life the sounds of one of the most romantic cities in the world. The performance begins with Bach’s take on two of Venice’s finest 18th century composers: Pergolesi’s dark and mournful Stabat Mater sung by City of London Sinfonia favourite Elin Manahan Thomas and Vivaldi’s energetic Keyboard Concerto. John Adams’ reflections on Liszt’s tribute to Venice’s waterways and Stravinsky’s light-hearted re-imagining of Pergolesi’s comedy, Pulcinella complete this atmospheric programme.

City of London Sinfonia are joined by Patron, Dame Felicity Lott for an immersive evening in an imaginary Viennese Salon complete with Kafe und Kuchen, waltzing and music by some of the European city’s most famous adopted sons. Lit by candelight, this unique space will play host to some of Richard Strauss’s most dramatic and romantic music for full orchestra and opera, staged in miniature form. Schoenberg and Berg, two composers who redefined music for the 20th century frame this performance, as re-imagined by two of the UK’s leading composers, David and Colin Matthews.

City of London Sinfonia offers our audiences a rare opportunity to hear Mahler’s great symphony of song, Das Lied Von der Erde with two of the UK’s most exciting young vocal talents, Anne Huntley and Gwilym Bowen. Originally conceived for vast orchestral forces, hear this epic and stunning work re-imagined for salon ensemble in one of London’s most atmospheric spaces with a story-telling introduction to the piece exploring the composer’s own words and emotions. Before the grand finale, Johann Strauss’s waltzes set the scene for the evening alongside the next in our ‘Bach RE:Imagined’ series by young Australian-Brit composer Luke Styles.
