Plans are currently underway for the placement of a memorial 9 honoring the Red Arrow 32nd Infantry Division on the south side of Red Arrow park. Memorial bricks and trees are a great way to honor and remember veterans from any branch of the service or era (including the Red Arrow 32nd Infantry Division), family members, or to show the community that you (or your company), supports veterans and the memorial at Red Arrow Park. Bricks are available in several different sizes and price ranges. There is limited availability for memorial trees, consisting of sixteen Crimson King Maples and sixteen Autumn Blaze Maples. Whether a family member of friend, honoring them with a tree is a beautiful way of remembering their life and service to our country. A plaque will be placed in front of the tree in their honor. For more information regarding the project, please contact Friends of Red Arrow (VFW 659) at 920.901.0791 or visit www.manitowoc.org/parksandrec

Fire Drill in Review Thank you to all who participated in the annual fire drill held on Tue. Oct. 25th. We had a nice day for the drill. A little on the brisk side, but sunny and beautiful. Thank you to Manitowoc Fire Dept. Rep., Ben Kraynek, for being present and answering questions any of you may have had. While we understand many do not enjoy the process of holding a fire drill, we appreciate you practicing along with us as we feel it is very important to know your escape routes at the center. Keeping you informed and safe is a priority.

This is very important and our main reason for our Holiday Fair because as many of you know, the Senior Center is a vital resource for our senior community as it provides a safe and friendly atmosphere promoting social well-being, giving our members a sense of belonging and purpose. We keep them active physically and socially, which is vital as we age. Again, we couldn’t have done this without the efforts of all our wonderful, hard working volunteers from bakers, soup & chili chefs, crafters, and servers, to kitchen help, cashiers and all the volunteers and members of the Senior Crafts, Weaving, Watercolor, the Gift Shop, Library and Bake Sale. You all did a tremendous job to make our largest fundraiser another success. Thank you all very much for your hard work and dedication to making this event special and to all who helped spread the word either by posting posters or displaying yard signs! All efforts, big or small, help make the fair what it is! We could not do this without you! If you would like to help out for next year’s Holiday Fair, please contact Penny at 686-3063. Do you need a gift for that hard to buy for person or someone who has everything? Do you want something unique or handmade or just want to avoid the holiday hustle and bustle of the chain stores? The Senior Center’s Gift Shoppe is the perfect solution to your problem! The Gift Shoppe has an extensive variety of items for all ages! The Gift Shoppe is open to the public Monday thru Friday, 9am-3:30pm. Cash or check only please. Additional gift ideas...Senior Center Membership for anyone age 55 and older! 15 We are in need of an individual to make birthday calls! Callers receive a list of 10-15 individuals each month and call to wish them a “Happy Birthday” from the Center and to invite them to participate in Birthday Bingo. In addition to a regular, monthly birthday caller, we need a couple of reserve callers as well. Help to make someone’s day great! If interested, call the Center at 686-3060. Our Silver Memories Choir is in need of a new pianist. This would require about an hour of your time every Monday-Sept through May. Practices are from 1p to 2p and the entertainment outings are from 2p to 3p at local assisted living and nursing homes. If you can help out or know of someone who could, please call us at 686-3060. Thank You.
Drivers Needed The Meals on Wheels program has an immediate need for volunteer drivers. Each weekday, there are routes throughout the county, where volunteers deliver a nutritious meal to homebound seniors. For many of these people, the interaction with the volunteer is the only contact they may have each day. If you enjoy driving and would like to bring a smile to someone’s face, along with their lunch, consider becoming a volunteer driver for the Meals On Wheels program. Call Chris Grall at 683-4384 for more information.
Enjoy “50 Reasons to get out of bed in the morning”, a fun little book created by the staff of Silver Lake College in the 1980’s. Go to a museum/art gallery/ exhibit/fair/auction. You can really impress your friends (and all the kids on your block) with all the information gleaned from museums and galleries. (You can impress them; the question remains; should you? If you’re just going to spew information, they’d be better off with a guidebook. If you can add a little mature insight and understanding, then go ahead—and with your listener’s blessings). There is so much to see and learn and it’s yours for the taking. Very often these tours are free, or there is a small admission fee. Don’t forget to use aarpie discounts in that case. And while you’re walking around observing, learning, and growing, you’re also getting exercise for both your brain and your body. Get a friend to join you; double the return on your investment.
Share a meal with a fellow aarpie. Pack a picnic, go to a park...the beach..the zoo—and be sure to take time to walk around after a meal. The sociability that results from an activity like this is a lot of fun, and it’s very beneficial. Try a new restaurant, or go to an old favorite. Pretend you’re a writer for a newspaper or magazine and you are critiquing the meal, atmosphere, and so on. You could become an aarpie expert in your field and action write a weekly or monthly column for some publication. This activity doesn’t have to be expensive—go Dutch treat, if you like (but do go) Expand your horizons. Try a different restaurant or a new dish at your favorite restaurant. Ask a friend you haven’t seen in a while to have lunch with you. Many restaurants offer Senior Discounts!

Raw beef suet 2 cups bread crumbs 1/4 cup bird seed mixture 1 cup green grapes 1/2 tsp sand
In a medium size bowl, place 2 cups bread crumbs, 1/4 cup bird seed mixture and 1 cup green grapes, cut in pieces. Set aside. Put beef suet through meat grinder, then into a double boiler to melt. Remove from heat, allow to cool and harden slightly. Reheat and while in liquid form, pour 1 1/2 cups over dry ingredients. Add 1/2 tsp sand. Mix well with a fork. Turn into a foil, loaf sized pan (5”x3”x1”). Refrigerate until firm. Place on feeder tray. About feeding containers... Seed dispensers-use at least two seed dispensers. A pile of brush nearby will provide a place to perch and preen in the winter sun. Suet containers—netted bags and plastic coated wire baskets are used by small clinging birds. Logs with holes and coconut shell halves are used by all. Ground feeders-can include wooden boxes or plastic containers about 3 inches deep. Be sure to drill holes in the bottom for drainage.

20 Center members, this is the last of the series for the Senior Fitness Corner. If you find this information beneficial and would like to see it continue, or if you have other suggestions, please let us know! All exercises of the month from 2016 will be posted in the exercise room for you to use at your convenience. We hope you enjoyed the Fitness Corner! Did you know? 90% of Americans will have some symptoms of Osteoarthritis by age 40! Sometimes called degenerative joint disease or degenerative arthritis, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common chronic condition of the joints. OA can affect any joint, but it occurs most often in knees, hips, lower back and neck, small joints of the fingers and the bases of the thumb and big toe. In normal joints, a firm, rubbery material called cartilage covers the end of each bone which provides a smooth, gliding surface for joint motion and acts as a cushion between the bones. In OA, the cartilage breaks down, causing pain, swelling and problems moving the joint. Over time, bones may break down and develop growths called spurs. Bits of bone or cartilage may chip off and float around in the joint. Ouch! Good news…. Research shows that people can and should exercise when they have osteoarthritis. Exercise is considered the most effective non-drug treatment for reducing pain and improving movement in osteoarthritis, including range-of-motion/flexibility exercises, aerobic and strengthening exercises. Lucky for you, the Senior Center already offers classes that help combat the effects of OA! Excellent choices would be Yoga, Chair Yoga & Functional Strength for range-of-motion/flexibility and strength and Senior Shape Up & Zumba for that aerobic aspect. The Center also has a wonderful fitness room with treadmills, exercise bikes, an elliptical machine, free-weights (dumbbells), weight bench and more! We have everything you need right here to help you get back in the game! If you rest, you rust! Get moving today! A little bit here and there goes a long way! If you have questions on how to use any of our equipment, just ask at the office. Source: spine-health.com

All ladies are welcome to join the Lakeshore Red Hatters. We meet the second Friday of every month at 1:30pm at the Manitowoc Senior Center. The November hostesses were Diane Cisler, Evie Schneider, Sue Schuh and a new member helped them, Karen Langnese. Welcome Karen. The tea was delicious and plentiful. The birthdays for November were Lily Groeschel and Lydia Starre. Six Red Hatters went to Denmark for their Hoedown. They were Shirley Oswald, Mary Ann Preston, Cathy Fischer, Bev Gilbertson, Terry Prigge, and the entertainment, Joy Krejcarek. We had a fun time and a good luncheon. The Christmas party will be held at Seven Lakes on Dec 9th. Cocktails at 11:30am and the meal at 12 Noon. Cost is $16.00. We are thinking of having a rummage sale in spring so start looking around for either red hat or everyday items you would like to donate. Looking ahead for next year, in April we will have a program of painting. The cost will be $1 and we get to show our talent. Should be fun and I am looking forward to it. Funny bone ticklers A Red Hatter was in a restaurant and ordered bean soup. It was very watery and she complained to the waitress, “This soup is awful.” the waitress replied, “I know. I don’t like bean soup either.” Have a great Red Hat day, Terry
