• Registration recommended at least three (3) business days prior to course start to avoid cancellation. • Appropriate program selections and registration are the responsibility of the person registering for the program. Please review confirmation text on your registration receipt.

On occasion, the City of Penticton may invite a photographer to visit a program. In this case, you may be asked to sign a consent form giving permission for the images to be used for promotional purposes.

affordable recreation Funding is available to provide financial assistance for children and youth in the South Okanagan (ages 4-18 years) for recreation programs, activities, leagues, sports, etc. with a physical component. Funding is available to provide assistance to children in Penticton, Kaleden, Naramata, and the Penticton Indian Band to participate in Sport BC recognized leagues and programs.

accessible recreation The Penticton Community Centre welcomes people of all ability levels to participate at our facility. We strive to ensure everyone has access to recreation opportunities regardless of disability, race, gender, religion or income. We also understand that disabilities include wide ranges of abilities and impairments from mobility and agilityrelated disabilities to sensory impairment and intellectual disabilities. The City of Penticton has taken steps toward making its pools accessible to people of differing abilities. Below is a list of features the Community Centre offers for accessibility in the pools: • A family change area with two accessible change rooms including ceiling lifts and change beds.
• Three standard wheel chairs 20” wide and 22” with a weight capacity of 350lbs/158kgs.
• Ceiling lifts with a weight capacity of 440lbs/200kg; clients need to provide their own slings.
• One heavy duty chair 28” wide with a weight capacity of 500lbs/226kg.
• The primary accessible change room has a lift bed with a weight capacity of 250lbs/115kgs.
• Two sling back chairs that partially recline with a weight capacity of 180lbs/81kg.
• The secondary accessible change room has a fixed bed with a weight capacity of 290lbs/135kg.
• All pools are ramped for easy access.
Friends in Motion All ages
This session is created for children, youth and young adults who need extra assistance participating in activities. Participants will develop motor skills on a variety of gym equipment and through other activities. Parent or Teaching Assistant participation required.
Fitness Room
The Fitness Room includes circuit, cable and cardio equipment, identified with special wheelchair symbols, that may be suitable for persons with disabilities. Patrons who have difficulty with stairs may enter through the automatic doors via the second floor and elevator.

AQUATICS Located in the Penticton Community Centre, our multi-use community pool is geared towards providing accessible, healthy and fun aquatics programming for residents and visitors of all ages. Detailed aquatics schedules can be found at www.penticton.ca/aquatics and include access to a variety of the following amenities and activities. Main Pool: A 10-lane, 25m lap pool which includes a zero-entry ramp and stairs for accessible access. Leisure Pool: A free form, 20m leisure pool which includes a zero-entry ramp and stairs for accessible access. It also features a lazy river, tot slide and spray features. Hot Tub: A free form hot tub which includes a zero-entry ramp and stairs for accessible access. All pools are treated with a Chlorine/UV Filtration system that provides a clean and comfortable swimming environment. Sauna & Steam Room: Our facility features both a dry sauna and steam room. Our energy efficient steam room produces steam in cycles and ranges in temperature from 46-49°C. It also features a standby mode with a temperature of 32°C. Water bottles are not permitted in the sauna or steam rooms, but can be kept outside for your convenience. Lazy River: A fun feature located in the leisure pool, the lazy river is available in two ways. Come during our Public or Family Swim for a fast current to swim and play in, or during one of our Water Walking times when the river is set to a lower speed more appropriate for water walking. Waterslide: Available during Public Swims, the waterslide is 53m long. Waterslide guidelines do require that all riders be a minimum of 40” (1.02m) in height and double riding, including parent and child, is not permitted. Children under the age of 12 who do not meet the admission guidelines must also be accompanied to the top of the waterslide by a responsible individual 16 years or older. Diving Boards: Available during Public Swims, our facility features 1m and 3m diving boards. Spray Features: Our leisure pool includes various spray features. Spray features will be on during Public and Family Swims, but can also be requested throughout every day as programming and scheduling permit. Tot Slide: Located in our leisure pool, the tot slide is available when scheduling and programming permit. Sliders are required to be 75cm tall and able to hold themselves upright in a sitting position to slide on their own. Sliders who are unable to meet that requirement must slide with a responsible individual. Rope Swing: Located in the deep end of our main pool the rope swing is available during our Public Swims as resources permit.

Aquatics Activities Lap Swim: There will be a minimum of 4 lanes available for lap swimming in the main pool. Shared Use: From independent fitness and casual swimming, to splash and play and aquatic programing, this time is available for everyone’s personal enjoyment and fitness needs. Limited Use: Busy with scheduled programming, space in the pools will be limited during these swims. Specific areas of the main and leisure pools, such as the 1.4m depth, may not be available, and a minimum of 2 lanes will be available for lap swimming in the main pool. Public Swim: These high energy swims are ideal for families and kids of all ages. The lazy river, waterslide, spray features and diving boards will also be available during these swims. A minimum of 2 lanes will be available for lap swimming in the main pool. Family Swim: Ideal for families with young children. The lazy river and spray features will be available during this time. Water Walking: The lazy river will be set to a low speed to allow for walking against a gentle current. Closed for Programs: Due to scheduled program use and very limited space, the leisure pool will be closed during this time. Changeover: This transition time in the main pool will be used to set up new lane arrangements for the following swim. Lap swimmers can continue to swim, but should be prepared to briefly pause their workouts and move to new lanes.
Admission Guidelines All children under the age of 7, and any child aged 7 – 11 who is unable to swim the length of the leisure pool (~20m), must be accompanied in the water by, and within arm’s reach of, a responsible individual 16 years or older. This includes accompaniment to the top of the waterslide. The maximum recommended ratio for supervisors to children is 1 to 3.
Help us maintain safety and cleanliness by: Taking a cleansing shower before swimming and after using the sauna and steam room. Walking on the pool deck with bare feet or clean indoor shoes. Not having food, drink or glass on the pool deck or in the change rooms. Not smoking on the premises, including the use of vapes or e-cigarettes. Not bringing recording devices in the change rooms. Cells phones must be kept in your bag while in the change rooms. Limiting use of scented products.

swim lessons - preschool
An 8-level program for children 4 months to 5 years of age Starfish (4-12 months) An introduction to the water for babies and their parent or caregiver. To enter this level, babies must be able to hold their head up. The goals are to help babies experience buoyancy and movement through songs and play in the water and to teach the parent/caregiver agespecific water safety. Duck (12 months-2 years) Babies and their caregivers learn how to use floating objects for support and explore different water movements through games, songs and active water play. Sea Turtle (2–5 years) For toddlers and their caregivers. Swimmers learn through fun games and songs, how to combine skills, how to kick with a buoyant object and how to perform basic floats, glides and kicks. Sea Otter (3-5 years) This is a transitional level that transfers the preschooler to the care of an instructor. Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop basic floats and glides, and swim 1 metre. They also learn age-appropriate water safety skills. Salamander (3-5 years) Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim 2 metres, further develop basic floats and increase their distance on front and back glide. Front swim and roll-over glides are also included, and swimmers learn appropriate water safety skills such as how to jump into chestdeep water and how to use a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Swimmers enter this level when they have completed Sea Otter. Sunfish (3-5 years) Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim 5 metres, increase their endurance and develop their kick using buoyant objects. Swimmers also work on roll-over glides, side glides and front swim. Safety skills include deep-water activities and use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Swimmers enter the level when they have successfully completed Salamander. Crocodile (3-5 years) Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim 5 metres on their front and back, perform dolphin kick and begin using rhythmic breathing. They also progress with kicking drills and increase their swimming distance to 10 metres. Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Sunfish. Whale (3-5 years) Using games and activities, swimmers perform a front and back swim for 10 metres. Swimmers work on developing their flutter kick and perform a distance swim of 15 metres. Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Crocodile.

A 10-level program for children 6 years and over When your child turns six, follow this chart to determine which Swim Kids level to enroll in: Swim Kids 1 Swimmers work on getting comfortable in the water and are introduced to floats, glides and kicking. Endurance is developed and includes a 5 metre swim. Swim Kids 2 Swimmers develop propulsion skills to move through the water and remain at the surface. Swimmers work on front swim and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Endurance is developed and includes a 10 metre swim.

This level provides an introduction to diving and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is developed and includes a 15 metre swim.
This level introduces breast stroke and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about hypothermia, rescue breathing, standing shallow dives and the dangers of open water. Swimmers tread water using the eggbeater skill to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is developed and includes a 300 metre swim.
Swim Kids 4 This level introduces front crawl and back swims with shoulder roll. Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is developed and includes a 25 metre swim. Swim Kids 5 This level introduces back crawl sculling skills, whip kick, stride dives, treading water and front crawl. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed and includes a 50 metre swim. Swim Kids 6 This level focuses on front crawl hand entry and breathing and back crawl arm position and body roll. Elementary backstroke, safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists is introduced. Swimmers demonstrate front dives and their ability to tread water. Endurance is developed and includes a 75 metre swim. Swim Kids 7 This level builds skills and endurance for front crawl, back crawl and elementary back stroke and introduces whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reaching assists and stride entries. Endurance is developed and includes a 150 metre swim.

Swim Kids 9 This level focuses on front crawl, back crawl, elementary back stroke and breast stroke. Swimmers work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is developed and includes a 400 metre swim. Swim Kids 10 This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique. Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is developed and includes a 500 metre swim.

Presented by Sportball. T-Ball and Soccer classes keep children moving and engaged and send them home with new skills each class. Our play-based approach uses creative coaching techniques to captivate imaginations and reduce performance anxiety. Soccer balls are rocket ships that children can launch into outer space with their kicks and pylons are volcanos that must be avoided by controlling the path of the ball. Or, children imagine that beanbags are pizzas and the targets, animal houses. They deliver pizza to the different animals by hitting the targets. No class April 15, 17, May 20 or 22.
