WELCOME DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

There has been a major development in health and medicine — the discovery of a treatment that is not only safe, easy and fun, but has been known to reduce the incidence of heart disease and blood pressure, decrease symptoms of depression, and save Americans billions of dollars a year.

And it’s free. It’s called walking. There have been numerous studies that show the positive impact walking can have on your health. Recently, the Surgeon General stated people experienced significant health improvements by walking 30 minutes each day. I would like to offer you a challenge — utilize your community parks to walk 30 minutes each day.

I hope that you will enjoy the change in the seasons within one of our beautiful parks. Explore the fall colors of the trees, enjoy fishing in the Truckee River, or visit Reno’s newest Park — Cyan Park. While taking my challenge to you to engage in walking in your parks for 30 minutes each day, I would encourage you to visit a new park for your walks. I believe visiting different parks that you have never been to will deepen your appreciation of the beauty that is found in Reno.

Truckee River Whitewater Park 348-3915 The Whitewater Park features five drop pools over 1,400 feet in the north channel and six pools over 1,200 feet in the south channel. Kayak, raft and tube rentals are available by local concessionaires. As with all river systems, safety precautions should be exercised (i.e. use of personal flotation devices). There is no lifeguard on duty.

EMNECC | Northwest Pool Instruction begins with basic physical and mental adjustment, basic safety and water skills using play as the primary form of teaching. This class does not teach children to be accomplished swimmers, but develops a comfort in the water. Ages 3-5 years old. Ratio: 5 students to 1 instructor EMNECC | Northwest Pool Students will be introduced to the fundamentals and techniques of basic swimming. Advanced students will refine the skills presented in previous lessons.

This course is broken out into six levels of progressive instruction. Ages six years and up. Ratio: 8 students to 1 instructor

RIVER OTTERS (ADVANCED STROKE IMPROVEMENT)

EMNECC River Otters is a pre-competitive swim team that develops all four competitive strokes (backstroke, breast stroke, butterfly and freestyle), starts, turns and building endurance to prepare them for a competitive swim team. The pre-requisite for this class is passing Learn to Swim level 5. The student to instructor ratio is 8 1. Minimum enrollment of 5 participants is required for the class to occur.

LIFEGUARD CLASSES

Northwest Pool Lifeguards are trained to act with speed and confidence in emergency situations both in and out of the water. Core content includes: Water rescue skills, surveillance and recognition, First Aid, CPR and AED, and breathing and cardiac emergencies.

Participants are required to pass a precourse swimming test and in order to earn a certification, must attend all courses, pass a written exam and pass a practical skills test. An e-book or printed version is available. $75-150. Call 334-2203 for more information. Must be 16 years old.

Project HERO City of Reno Project HERO (Healing Exercise Rehabilitation Opportunity) provides training and supports cycling programs at military hospitals, Army Transition Units, Marine Wounded Warrior Units and Veterans Affairs locations to help healing heroes. Fit But Not Forgotten The Fit But Not Forgotten program offers weekly fitness classes in our facility weight room covering equipment, fitness level assessment, strength development techniques, endurance and flexibility and fitness goal discussion. Upon completion of four classes, participants will be eligible for a free all-inclusive one year facility membership. This program is funded from a grant provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Adaptive Sports Grant.

Examples of special events include, but are not limited to: (a) Parades (b) Street fairs and festivals (c) Live commercial music events (d) Athletic or sporting events (e.g., races, runs) (e) Circuses and carnivals (f) Community celebrations and observances (g) Commercial shows, trade shows, and business promotions (h) Commercial, promotional or fundraising activities.
