WELCOME DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

There has been a major development in health and medicine — the discovery of a treatment that is not only safe, easy and fun, but has been known to reduce the incidence of heart disease and blood pressure, decrease symptoms of depression, and save Americans billions of dollars a year. And it’s free. It’s called walking. There have been numerous studies that show the positive impact walking can have on your health. Recently, the Surgeon General stated people experienced significant health improvements by walking 30 minutes each day. I would like to offer you a challenge — utilize your community parks to walk 30 minutes each day.

I hope that you will enjoy the change in the seasons within one of our beautiful parks. Explore the fall colors of the trees, enjoy fishing in the Truckee River, or visit Reno’s newest Park — Cyan Park. While taking my challenge to you to engage in walking in your parks for 30 minutes each day, I would encourage you to visit a new park for your walks. I believe visiting different parks that you have never been to will deepen your appreciation of the beauty that is found in Reno.

Andy Bass Director of Parks, Recreation & Community Services
