INTRODUCTION

Dear friends, I hope everyone has had a wonderful summer and taken advantage of some of the exciting and fun-filled classes, indoor and outdoor activities, and events offered by Southlake Parks and Recreation. Though summer is winding down you will still find lots of kid friendly and family fun things to do as we head into fall. Southlake Parks and Recreation offers everything you could want whether you’re a young person, adult or one of our fabulous seniors. Take a look at just a few of the exciting activities and events we have planned for your family. • How about signing up for the Haunted Family Campout in October? Your kids will love it! • Home for the Holidays is a must see event that really gets everyone in the Christmas spirit. Don’t forget to treat your kids to Breakfast with Santa! • You’ll also want to check out the calendar of events at the Southlake Library so you don’t miss Story Time with Mrs. Santa Claus and other fun things to do with your kids. • Trying to stay fit as Old Man Winter comes to town? Make sure to get your LiveFit Pass so you can join Yoga and Zumba classes and much more. • Parks and Recreation also has a variety of team sports that you can sign up for adult over 30 softball, men’s flag football, youth basketball and youth volleyball. What better way to make new friends and stay active than getting involved in Parks and Rec? So if you are looking to join a sports league, a LiveFit class, or find some fun and educational activities for your kids, you don’t have to look any further than the great City in which you live. I hope you will take advantage of all that Southlake has to offer and I hope we have the chance to meet in person soon. Laura K. Hill

GREEN INITIATIVES Keep Southlake Beautiful Keep Southlake Beautiful is a City of Southlake program dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for Southlake residents through green initiatives and beautification projects.

participate in southlake’s

Fall Green Initiatives OCTOBER 1 – DECEMBER 31 Applications are available at CityofSouthlake.com/ksb Street Tree Program. The City of Southlake encourages its residents to Keep Southlake Beautiful by participating in the annual Street Tree Program. Through the Street Tree Program, residents are able to purchase a tree for half price, with the City covering the other half of the cost. The following four (4) varieties of trees are available for purchase through the program: Chinese Pistache, Lacebark Elm, Live Oak and Shumard Oak. Trees will be planted in City right-of-ways in late winter/early spring. The benefits of participating in a Street Tree program are many. Trees enhance the beauty of our community, but they also play a vital role in the health of our environment. Trees improve air quality by filtering out harmful pollutants, provide the oxygen we need to breath, reduce the amount of storm water runoff and provide a natural habitat for many species of wildlife.

ADOPT-A-STREET The Adopt-a-Street program gives families and groups the opportunity to help their communities by collecting litter and beautifying roadsides four times a year. This is similar to the Don’t Mess with Texas Adopt-a-Highway Program. The City of Southlake encourages you to become a partner and Adopt-a-Street today! If you are interested in adopting a street, please contact Community Services at 817.748.8019.

NOVEMBER – JANUARY Curbside Leaf Recycling. The City of Southlake, in partnership with Republic Services, is pleased to offer another round of curbside leaf recycling this winter. The Leaf Recycling Program gives citizens the opportunity to place their bagged leaves on the curb and have them picked up for recycling rather than ending up in the landfill. During the last Leaf Recycling Program, Southlake residents put green in their routine, and Southlake residents bagged and recycled over 385 tons of leaves! It is important to participate in this program because the tree leaves that accumulate in and around a landscape represent a valuable natural resource that can be used to provide landscaped areas with a good source of organic matter and nutrients.

DECEMBER – JANUARY Christmas Tree Recycling Program. What should you do with your Christmas tree after Christmas? Recycle it! By recycling your tree, you save valuable landfill space. Real Christmas trees are biodegradable, which means they can be easily reused or recycled for mulch and other purposes. Through the City of Southlake’s Christmas Tree Recycling Program, residents can drop off their bare trees at Bicentennial Park and the City will turn the trees into wood chips. The environmentally friendly wood chips are made available to residents and can be used as mulch that can be placed in and around flower beds and gardens. During the 2016 program, approximately 1560 trees were recycled through the Christmas Tree Recycling Program!
