INTRODUCTION
Summer Fun List Can you believe it? Summer is almost here! I don’t know about all of you, but I’m already busy filling up my calendar. Since there is so much to see and do in Southlake over the summer, I thought I’d help you out by giving you a good list to get started with.
Here’s my list of Southlake Summer To-Dos. Movies at The Marq — Enjoy a movie outside on us. Grab your family and friends, a lawn chair or blanket and join us for some movie fun. This year the lineup includes Cars 3, Coco, Mulan and the 2017 live action Beauty and the Beast. Details can be found at ExperienceSouthlakeTexas.com/Events.
Summer Recreation Programs — We’ve got a program for you and the whole family. We start with activities for the preschoolers and go all the way to programming for our seniors. Take some time to browse this edition of The Scene and find the right programs for your family.
Southlake Spies — The Southlake Library has a top-secret mission for summer readers, should they choose to accept. Pack your duffel bag with your favorite reads and work your way up to Master Spy. Want to sign up? Check out SouthlakeLibrary.com for more information.
Parks and Rec Month — July is Parks and Recreation Month and we’re ready to celebrate! Check out the calendar of fun events at ExperienceSouthlakeTexas.com/ Events/July.
MasterWorks Concert Series — What’s better than live music in the park? There are concerts planned throughout the summer. Take your pick of Town Square or Aria Amphitheater and grab a lawn chair. Take a look at the schedule and see what strikes your fancy at ExperienceSouthlakeTexas.com/ Events.
Stars & Stripes — It’s the perfect way to celebrate Independence Day. Join us for a night of fireworks, music and fun for the whole family. Get all the details you need at StarsAndStripesSouthlake.com.
Have a wonderful summer! I hope to see you around town. Laura K. Hill

Ponds are magnets for hosts of different kinds of wildlife, from the plants that are rooted there to the wading birds like Great Blue Herons that hunt for aquatic insects. This week we will wind the clock back to when the land that we live on supported a whole different ecosystem. T exas is an excellent place to dig up the past, and we will spend Fossil Mania week exploring the ancient rocks that teach us about creatures as old as the dinosaurs.

Does your kiddo love long hikes, camping, and exploring the great outdoors? This week, we will hike to Lake Grapevine and profile our travels in the style of Lewis and Clark. We will learn about edible plants, how to build temporary shelters, and what hazards to avoid when out in the Cross Timbers.

In order to survive in the wild, animals have developed amazing adaptations – outer body coverings that protect against the cold, sensory abilities to help detect predators, and camouflage, to name a few. This summer workshop will take you through a number of scenario-based games that will help you see life through the eyes of some of Texas’ most impressive species.
WEEK 2 — WRITER’S WORKSHOP June 13–14
WEEK 4 — NO IMPACT
Nature has been one of the greatest sources of inspiration for many of history’s most famed authors and poets. Rather than read and study in an isolated classroom space, we will do fun journaling activities and experience the world of nature writing out on our 750 acres of trails.
June 27–28 This week, we will learn how to harness nature’s resources in a non-impactful way. On day one, we will focus on harnessing the sun to cook food and power a mini model car, while on day two; we will use recycled and reused materials to make the ultimate eco-art project.

In this two-hour class, we will discuss how students and families can better plan their high school years to make college more affordable. We will also address common concerns about higher education such as acceptance rates and yields, recent trends in college admissions and what makes a student profile.

GREEN INITIATIVES participate in
Keep K eep Southlake Beautiful Southlake ADOPT-A-STREET Beautiful Adopt-a-Street is a free program that allows organizations, businesses, groups, families and individuals to adopt and maintain areas within the Southlake community. This is similar to the Don’t Mess with Texas Adopt-A-Highway Program. Southlake is growing, and a surging population which means more cars on the roadways and unfortunately, more trash. Volunteer efforts reduce litter cleanup costs and save taxpayers money. The City of Southlake encourages you to become a partner and Adopt-a-Street.
Keep Southlake Beautiful is a City of Southlake program dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for Southlake residents through green initiatives and beautification projects.
When you become an Adopt-a-Street partner, the following commitment is expected: • Participation in a minimum of four cleanups per year — Citywide cleanups are usually held in January, April, July and October. At your request, trash bags, gloves and safety vests will be provided to you at no charge. • Completion of a Quarterly Cleanup Report after each event — The Quarterly Cleanup Report asks you to record the number of volunteers, cumulative volunteer hours and bags of trash collected during each cleanup event.
For more information on and to find out how you can get involved, visit our website at ExperienceSouthlakeTexas.com/ksb or contact the Southlake Parks and Recreation office at (817) 748-8019.
