City of Vallejo declares Volunteer Appreciation Day

On Tuesday April 25 over 60 people gathered in the Vallejo Room for a casual reception to celebrate the contributions of the many community members that have volunteered their time to making Vallejo a better place. Volunteers who attended the event have spent countless hours cleaning up neighborhoods and the waterfront, staffing warming centers, distributing food, and practicing many random acts of kindness through formal or informal ways.

At the reception guests got to mingle with volunteers, family members and City staff while enjoying light refreshments. While the City is aware of the positive impact that volunteers are making to improve Vallejo, the reception created an opportunity to learn the reasons behind people’s altruism. For example, Dave Smail wanted to see a cleaner Vallejo and over the past year has spent almost 200 hours collecting 2 tons of litter from our streets and waterways. Jose (also known as Joey) Carrizales, who is passionate about bringing more support

programs for unhoused community members, has volunteered over 50 hours staffing the City run warming centers during the 2022-2023 winter.

After the reception, volunteers attended the City Council Meeting where City Councilmember Tina Arriola read the Proclamation acknowledging April 25, 2023, as Volunteer Appreciation Day and thanked volunteers for their commitment. A few volunteers publicly shared the reason behind their service. Sedona from Girls Scouts of Vallejo Troop 20067 stated that, “Vallejo is an amazing and beautiful place with amazing and beautiful citizens. I get a lot from volunteering and helping the community and possibly brightening someone’s day [through service].”

Whether people are showing up to support an organized community project or doing service on their own, the City of Vallejo is grateful for their contributions.

If you are interested in volunteering with the City of Vallejo, CLICK HERE to fill out a volunteer interest form and a staff member will follow-up with opportunities.

Traffic Stop Turns Into Gun Arrest

On April 18, 2023, our officers observed a 2013 blue BMW 328i with tinted windows and expired registration traveling in the area of Sonoma Blvd and Redwood St.

Our officers conducted a traffic stop on the BMW for the listed vehicle violations. When our officers contacted the driver, they smelled a strong odor of marijuana inside the vehicle. They also saw marijuana in plain view on the center console.

A license check on the driver revealed he was under the age of 21. The driver did not have a physician's recommendation for medicinal use and possession to justify why he violated California's possession of marijuana laws.

The driver was detained for being in possession of marijuana under the age of 21 without a physician's note. Officers searched the BMW and located a loaded firearm with an extended magazine inside the vehicle.

The male was arrested and transported to the county jail. The BMW was towed from the scene.

The Extra Mile - One Man on a Mission Making a Difference

“We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in our hands to make a difference.” ~Nelson Mandela~

In 2020, the City of Vallejo began a volunteer pilot project to clean up litter in our streets. A small group of individuals opted to join the Litter Picker Pilot and patrol their area on a regular basis picking up trash and debris. The City supplied them with a litter picker, safety vest and trash bags. Once they had collected 3 full bags, they contacted the Volunteer Coordinator so Public Works staff could be dispatched to pick up and dispose of the bags they filled.

Many of the pilot sites focused on highly visible freeway entrances, as well as Columbus Parkway, Tennessee St., Springs Rd, and Rollingwood Way.

The pilot, complimenting the efforts of larger groups who reserve the Community Tool Trailer, has had big results. One man, Dave Smail, took the pilot up a notch with his efforts by responding to reports on SeeClickFix.

The number of hours and bags of trash he has collected since July 2021 through April 2022 is truly remarkable! When he finds auto batteries, he takes them to a local auto supply store who can dispose of these hazardous materials safely. He has also used SeeClickFix to report tires, large pieces of furniture and large dumps of household trash.

Dave has consistently communicated with staff when an area maintained by CalTrans is in need of attention. Thanks to his proactive calls, and the calls of staff, and other community members, CalTrans has been much more responsive in addressing dumping issues in the main arteries in Vallejo around highways 29, 37 and 780.

In total, Dave has volunteered 191 hours and has collected almost 300 bags of debris. On average each bag is estimated to weigh 15 pounds… that is over 2 tons of litter off our streets and waterways!

What a difference one man on a mission has made!

Thank you Dave, you are an inspiration to us all!
