A message from Mayor Jaworsky

councillor, Ward 1 (Southwest)

Welcome to the fall edition of the Program and Activities Guide! Fall in Waterloo is a wonderful time to stay healthy and active. Our guide is full of social and high-paced activities including yoga, skating, playing cards, swimming and more. Finding your fit is easy when there are so many options to choose from! Enjoy the outdoors and the vibrant colours of the season by taking a walk through our trails or visiting Waterloo Park. Then take in the City of Waterloo Museum’s current exhibit, Jewel of the City, which celebrates the 125th anniversary of Waterloo Park. Later this month, take part in Culture Days, a nationwide initiative that celebrates arts and culture and supports artists in our community. Culture Days takes place Sept. 25 - 27. Be sure to visit waterloo.ca/artsandculture for details about events happening in Waterloo that weekend. And don’t forget Oktoberfest! Mark your calendar for this celebration which runs October 9 - 17. I look forward to hosting my first Mayor’s Oktoberfest Luncheon on Thursday, October 8, at Waterloo Public Square. Join me and my fellow councillors from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as we serve up free Oktoberfest sausage, courtesy of Piller’s. Be sure to stay current on the events happening around our city by visiting our website and by following us on Twitter and Facebook.

AQUATICS GENERAL SWIM LESSON INFORMATION Before you start swim lessons Become familiar with our facility by attending a public or family swim. Pool schedules are available at waterloo.ca/swim
How are we doing? Your feedback is welcome at any time. Comment sheets are available at the front desk. If you have a comment about current lessons please let us know.
Lockers and jewelry Lockers are provided for use with your own lock. Please do not wear any jewelry while swimming. Remember to lock your locker. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Missed lessons If you miss a scheduled lesson, we are unfortunately unable to make it up. You do not need to call us.
Shower before you swim All swimmers must shower with soap and water before entering the pool. Footwear (shoes or boots) is not allowed near the showers or pool area. We offer two choices: remove your footwear and go barefoot or purchase reusable shoe covers (available at the reception desk for 75¢). Lesson start time Swimmers should go to the pool deck at the lesson start time (not earlier). Parents can escort their child to the lesson on the first day to meet the instructor. Look for signs on the pool deck with the name of your child’s swim level (ex. Waterloo Splash 2) and wait for the instructor. Observation gallery Spectators are welcome to watch swimmers from our second floor observation gallery (seats over 300). Class transfers and new registrants You may switch classes prior to the start of the third lesson if space is available. We will accept new registrants, if space is available, up to the beginning of the fifth lesson. Swim level evaluations Free swim level evaluations are available if you have been out of lessons for more than a year. Call the Swimplex for details. Emergency closings If lessons are cancelled unexpectedly, announcements will be made on local radio stations. We are unable to make up lessons cancelled due to emergency closures. Instructor requests We review all requests for specific instructors or specific gender of instructor; however, we are unable to guarantee that any specific request will be granted. Feedback day On the fifth lesson, one parent is encouraged to meet the instructor on deck during the last 10 minutes of the class to receive a verbal progress report. If you have concerns about your child’s lessons, speak with the aquatic supervisor. An evaluation form can be found at waterloo.ca/evaluations

Appropriate levels Your child’s instructor may recommend a change in level if they feel your child is registered in an inappropriate level. Swimplex staff reserve the right to move a child if circumstances dictate. Program and lesson cancellations If enrollment is low, the City of Waterloo reserves the right to cancel swim classes up to three days prior to program start dates. Progress memo At the last lesson, a written progress memo is provided and the instructor will determine the next recommended swim level. Badges may be purchased at reception for all Waterloo Splash and Preschool levels. Photography/video policy Patrons wishing to photograph and/or videotape registered or supervised programs must receive permission from staff before filming. This will be permitted on the last day of lessons only. HELP REDUCE POOL CLOSURES
A pool fouling will cause a closure of our pools anywhere from 1-12 hours. Keep our pool clean
Here are some healthy habits you can take to stop the spread of germs and here. reduce the number of closures in our pools: •
Take your kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Waiting to hear “I have to go” may be too late.
•
The use of a swim diaper is mandatory to enter the pool if a child is not yet fully toilet trained.
•
Do not swim if you are feeling sick or have been sick in the past 24 hours. This is especially important for children in diapers.
•
Wash your body thoroughly with soap and water before swimming. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our pool clean for all to enjoy.

IN YOUR CITY
Waterloo’s natural areas Do you live near a natural area? Help us protect the natural areas in our city! Respect property boundaries
Respect our wildlife
Encroachment is unauthorized use of public land as an extension of one’s own property.
From mammals and birds, to reptiles, amphibians, and insects, wildlife foster a healthy forest and share it with residents living nearby.
Altering public land by mowing, pruning, or placing items such as garbage, yard waste, sheds, fences, play equipment, composters, vehicles, and bird feeders on public land is not permitted. Encroachment negatively impacts natural areas by smothering native vegetation, introducing non-native species, compacting soil and causing erosion.
Drain pools and hot tubs properly Water from pools and hot tubs is generally laden with chemicals that can have a negative impact on vegetation and water features when drained into a park or natural area. Place the drain tube on your property, away from the park or natural area, to allow water to filter into the soils in your yard.
Let wildlife feed from the forest Wildlife relies on plants, soils and organic debris for survival. When people harvest from the forest, plants may be depleted allowing undesirable plants to establish. Try planting native plants in your garden to enjoy, while leaving the wild plants for wildlife to use and future generations to admire.
Waterloo is home to non-poisonous snakes. A healthy population of these snakes around your property is beneficial because they can help keep local rodents in check – more so than cats! A snake will slither away when startled and will not hurt you. Teaching children to observe wildlife from afar will help avoid confrontation while respecting the wildlife and their habitat. Please do not destroy burrows, nests or other habitat and remember to always stay on designated trails.
