MEET THE TEAM

MEET TEAM #ACTIVEWATERLOO A CREATIVE APPROACH TO DANCE Dance Craze is all about the creative element of dance – and learning in a fun and comfortable setting. Children move to music, try new styles, learn technique and make new friends. Dance can help children build self-confidence in a safe and fun environment. Aside from being a great form of exercise, dance enables participants to learn coordination, discipline, and rhythm. Children will learn teamwork, how to take instruction, gain patience, refine gross motor skills and how to isolate of different body parts. What sets us apart from other dance classes is our ability to accommodate dancers of all ages and skill levels. The Dance Craze classes are a great way to see if your child likes dance without a year long commitment. It’s a relaxed and welcoming environment with top notch teachers. In our sessions, parents can expect to see dancing, laughing, creative movement, fun songs, and children learning to interact positively with each other.

8

Dance has always been a passion for me and I love sharing it with others. I enjoy watching students express themselves through movement and find their inner dancer. Our instructors love teaching because they can share one of their biggest passions with other young dancers. They enjoy watching students express themselves through movement and find their inner dancer. Seeing growth and development in students from the start to the end of a program is so rewarding. Our instructors look forward to each and every class! Get active, creative and energetic with other amazing kids! Classes begin the week of September 24.

SWIM LESSONS

Let’s get started! The most important step is to make sure your child is placed in the right swim level. Staff reserves the right to ask a child be moved to a different level if the class is too challenging, so it’s best to get it right.

SWIM

GENERAL INFORMATION

If you’re uncertain what level your child should be in, and/or the child has been out of lessons for more than a year, call the Swimplex at 519-886-1177 to arrange a free swim level evaluation. Or follow the recommendations from the child’s last progress report card, and review the detailed standards of performance for each level (online at waterloo.ca/swim/swimlevels). Requests for specific instructors are considered, but we are unable to guarantee that all requests can be granted. Registrations are accepted up to the start of the fifth lesson.

Making the most of your swim experience Leave your valuables at home and bring a lock to secure your belongings. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Shower with soap and water before your swim lesson. Footwear is not permitted on the pool deck. Be prepared to go barefoot, or purchase reusable shoe covers at the customer service desk for 75¢. Children who are not fully toilet trained must wear watertight elastic pants or specially designed

disposable swimming diapers, available at the customer service desk for $2.00. Do not send a child to lessons if they are not feeling well. Pool fouling affects all lessons. If a pool fouling happens, lessons are conducted on the pool deck instead of in the water. Refunds/credits are not given for pool foulings. If your child requires one-on-one support in our group lessons, please call the inclusion coordinator up to 3 weeks in advance, at 519-741-2200 ext. 7228. Volunteers are subject to availability.

What to expect Swimmers should go to the pool deck at the lesson start time and not earlier. Parents can escort their child on the first day to meet the instructor. Afterwards, spectators can watch swimmers from the second floor observation gallery.

Photography or videotaping is only permitted on the last day of lessons, subject to advance staff approval. The use of cell phones and PDAs is strictly prohibited in City of Waterloo recreation facility change rooms, washrooms, pool decks and gallery.

One parent is asked to meet the instructor on deck during the last 10 minutes of the sixth lesson to receive a verbal progress report.

In the event of bad weather, listen to local radio stations in case the program has been cancelled unexpectedly. We are unable to make up lessons cancelled due to emergency closures, but will credit the value of the missed class.

A written progress report is provided at the last lesson and will identify the next recommended swim level. Badges may be purchased at the customer service desk for all Waterloo Splash and Preschool levels.

A pool fouling will cause a closure of our pools anywhere from 1-24 hours. Here are some healthy habits you can take to stop the spread of germs and reduce the number of closures: • Take your kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Waiting to hear “I have to go” may be too late. • The use of a swim diaper is mandatory to enter the pool if a child is not yet fully toilet trained. • Do not swim if you are feeling sick or have been sick in the past 24 hours. This is especially important for children in diapers.

Thank you for your assistance in keeping our pool clean!

• Wash your body thoroughly with soap and water before swimming.

Class size may increase by two participants with an aquatic assistant.

Beyond the academics it was wonderful to see Cecilia involved with some of the many extra-curricular activities from choir/concerts and sports. Perhaps most importantly we feel she has formed strong friendships with peers that share similar values. Thank you, Rockway!” David Erb, Rockway Parent since 2016 Cecilia Erb, Class of 2022

HELP US PROTECT WATERLOO’S NATURAL AREAS Respect property boundaries Extending your property on to public land or natural areas is not permitted. Mowing or pruning natural areas, or using public land for garbage, yard waste, sheds, fences, play equipment, composters, vehicles and bird feeders smothers native vegetation, introduces non-native species, compacts soil and causes erosion. Respect our wildlife Waterloo is home to non-poisonous snakes, which are beneficial because they help keep local rodents in check – more so than cats! A snake will slither away when startled and will not hurt you. Respect wildlife and their habitat by observing wildlife from afar to avoid confrontation. Mammals and birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects foster healthy forests. Please do not destroy burrows, nests or other habitat and remember to always stay on designated trails.

Don’t disturb natural areas Ferns, leeks, berries and wood found in natural areas should be left alone. Planting vegetation, removing vegetation (including wood for firewood), controlling wildlife, creating new foot paths and dumping are all detrimental to Waterloo’s delicate ecosystems. The accumulated effect of these activities is costly to tax payers and creates great problems for the natural area. Plants are depleted past restoration, habitat, food and nutrients are lost, soils can become eroded, and invasive plants become established. Try planting your own native plants, found at most garden stores, in your own backyard to enjoy. This will help keep native plants for our wildlife and future generations. Drain pools and hot tubs properly Chemicals in hot tubs and pools can be harmful to vegetation and water features when drained into a park or natural area. Place the drain tube on your property, away from the park or natural area, to allow water to filter into the soils in your yard.

Be a steward of your neighbourhood’s natural areas through our Partners in Parks program To find out more, contact: City of Waterloo Environment and Parks Services P. 519.886.2310 TTY. 1.866.786.3941 E. environment@waterloo.ca 62
