LETTER TO RESIDENTS

Recreation facilities are open in limited capacities. As the situation evolves, we will continue to assess and make adjustments safely and responsibly. New practices, procedures and protocols are in place for programs and facility rentals. Face mask requirements, participant maximums, entering and exiting protocols, and cleaning and disinfecting routines and responsibilities are some of the new changes taking place. These will be communicated to our customers through a variety of channels including the City’s website and social media channels, along with emails, phone calls, notices on ActiveWaterloo, and onsite facility ambassadors. We encourage all customers to visit waterloo.ca and our social media channels for the most up to date information on facility openings and program offerings. Recreation customers are also encouraged to check ActiveWaterloo and Waterloo’s Own PickupHub for program offerings as they become available. We ask our customers to work with us to help stop the spread of COVID-19 by following the guidelines provided by the Region of Waterloo’s Public Health unit – practices include staying home when you’re feeling ill, increased and proper handwashing, and maintaining a 2m physical distance between people. We thank you for your patience and look forward to providing safe and enjoyable recreation services this fall.

GENERAL INFORMATION

SWIM LESSONS LET’S GET STARTED!

The most important step is to make sure your child is placed in the right swim level. Staff reserve the right to move a child to a different level if a class is too challenging, so it’s best to get it right before classes start.

If your child requires one to one support in our group lessons, please call the inclusion coordinator up to 3 weeks in advance to complete a membership registration, 519-741-2200 ext. 7229. Volunteers are subject to availability.

If you’re uncertain what level your child should be in, follow the recommendations from the child’s last progress report card, and review the detailed standards of performance for each level. Ask for details at Customer Service.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Requests for specific instructors are considered, however we are unable to guarantee all requests. Registrations are accepted up to the start of the third lesson.

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR SWIM EXPERIENCE

Lockers are not available at this time. Leave your valuables at home and bring a gym bag/backpack to secure your belongings. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Shower with soap and water before your swim lesson. Footwear is not permitted on the pool deck. Be prepared to go barefoot, or purchase reusable shoe covers at the customer service desk for 75¢. Children who are not fully toilet trained must wear watertight elastic pants or specially designed disposable swimming diapers, available at the customer service desk for $2.00. Do not send a child to lessons if they are not feeling well. Pool fouling affects all lessons. If a pool fouling happens, lessons are conducted on the pool deck instead of in the water. Refunds/credits are not given for pool foulings.

Entrance into the facility will occur up to 5 minutes prior to the program start time. Participants must come prepared for lessons with their bathing suit on. Male and female changerooms will be available at the end of lessons. Once the program has ended you will have up to 10 minutes to exit the changeroom. We ask that only one adult per participant attends the lesson as the second floor gallery will not be open. During feedback week, adults accompanying swimmers in the water will receive feedback in the last 10 minutes of class. All others will receive feedback from the swim instructor on need improvement items in the last 10 minutes of class. For customers registered in swim lessons from Waterloo Splash 5 and below, a written progress report is provided at the last lesson and will identify the next recommended swim level. Badges may be purchased at the customer service desk for all Waterloo Splash and Preschool levels. Photography or videotaping is not permitted on the last day of lessons for the fall session. The use of cell phones and PDAs is strictly prohibited in City of Waterloo recreation facility change rooms, washrooms, pool decks and gallery. In the event of bad weather, listen to local radio stations in case the program has been cancelled unexpectedly. We are unable to make up lessons cancelled due to emergency closures, but will credit the value of the missed class. Entry and other protocols are subject to change.

Did you know... It takes about four sessions for a swimmer to master the skills required to progress to the next level of swimming lessons. • Advancing your child before they’re ready can cause undue stress, especially if they aren’t ready to master new, challenging skills. • All requirements must be checked off before a swimmer moves up a level. • If your child is repeating a session, share their previous report card with the swim instructor so they can focus on areas of improvement. Swimming is a life-long skill. Giving your child time to learn this skill benefits everyone.

Dates and course codes for all swim programs can be found at www.waterloo.ca/activewaterloo Reminder: participants in introductory swim lessons will require an adult (16Y+) from the same household/family 24 bubble in the water during class for any holds required as instructors maintain a 2 metre distance.

Share the trail! Please be considerate and respectful of all park/trail users so everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience. Our trails are designed for everyone so please share the space! Faster trail users: • Ring your bell, honk your horn or shout a friendly greeting to notify someone that you’re approaching • Always yield to pedestrians • Pass on the left (slower trail users keep right) • Only pass when it is safe to do so and the trail is wide enough • Slow down when approaching a bend or a curve • Stop for vehicular traffic where the trails cross streets and remember to dismount your bike and walk it across the street

Respect property boundaries Extending your property on to public land or natural areas is not permitted. Mowing or pruning natural areas, or using public land for garbage, yard waste, sheds, fences, play equipment, composters, vehicles and bird feeders smothers native vegetation, introduces non-native species, compacts soil and causes erosion. Respect our wildlife Waterloo is home to non-poisonous snakes, which are beneficial because they help keep local rodents in check – more so than cats! A snake will slither away when startled and will not hurt you. Respect wildlife and their habitat by observing wildlife from afar to avoid confrontation. Mammals and birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects foster healthy forests. Please do not destroy burrows, nests or other habitat and remember to always stay on designated trails.

IN YOUR CITY

HELP US PROTECT WATERLOO’S NATURAL AREAS Don’t disturb natural areas Ferns, leeks, berries and wood found in natural areas should be left alone. Planting vegetation, removing vegetation (including wood for firewood), controlling wildlife, creating new foot paths and dumping are all detrimental to Waterloo’s delicate ecosystems. The accumulated effect of these activities is costly to tax payers and creates great problems for the natural area. Plants are depleted past restoration, habitat, food and nutrients are lost, soils can become eroded, and invasive plants become established. Try planting your own native plants, found at most garden stores, in your own backyard to enjoy. This will help keep native plants for our wildlife and future generations. Drain pools and hot tubs properly Chemicals in hot tubs and pools can be harmful to vegetation and water features when drained into a park or natural area. Place the drain tube on your property, away from the park or natural area, to allow water to filter into the soils in your yard.

Be a steward of your neighbourhood’s natural areas through our Partners in Parks program To find out more, contact: City of Waterloo Environment and Parks Services P. 519.886.2310 TTY. 1.866.786.3941 E. environment@waterloo.ca

IN YOUR CITY Home fire safety from Waterloo Fire Rescue

Test your fire safety knowledge! If a ďŹ re occurred, how much time do you have to escape? Fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you with less than 2 minutes to escape safely once a fire has started. This time is an estimate only as fires may spread faster or slower. How many smoke alarms do you need in your home? The Ontario Fire Code requires a smoke alarm between each sleeping area and the remainder of the home, and alarms on each storey/level. For maximum protection we also recommend smoke alarms in every bedroom (for new houses built after 2012 and when you sleep with your bedroom door closed).

36

How often should you change the batteries in your smoke alarms and do you know what to do when the alarm battery sounds at a slow rate, occasionally? Install a new battery at least once a year, and if the low battery warning beeps replace batteries immediately.

IN YOUR CITY

How and when should you test your smoke alarms? At minimum test each smoke alarm monthly using the “test” button. You should test your alarms after being away for a period of time such as on vacation. How often should you replace your smoke alarms? As per manufacturer’s instructions. If smoke alarms are older than 10 years the Office of the Fire Marshal & Emergency Management recommend replacement. When replacing alarms, note batteryoperated alarms do not provide the same level of protection as electrically operated ones. What actions can you take to minimize false alarms for your smoke alarms? i. switch from an ionization to photoelectric type alarm; ii. ensure your alarm has a “hush” feature so you do not disconnect the alarm and; iii. ensure that your alarms are located as per the manufacturer recommendations. Where do you require working carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in your home (as of April 2015)? Working carbon monoxide alarms are required on every sleeping level of the home outside of the bedrooms. CO alarms are not required for homes with no fuel-fire appliances, fireplace or garage.

Do you know what to do when your CO alarm rings? Know what actions to take when the CO activates in full alarm versus a lowbattery or malfunctioning alarm signal. Refer to instructions printed on the alarm or manual. Phone 911 only if you feel it is a CO poisoning emergency (e.g. unit goes into alarm mode). In this case, as everyone exits the home close all doors and windows and meet firefighters outside. Do not go back in the house until safe to do so by firefighters. For false alarms change the battery or CO unit and refer to the operating instructions. Need more information? Please call us at 519-884-6030 ext. 23309.
