MEET THE TEAM

MEET TEAM #ACTIVEWATERLOO Get to know our instructors – their energy, friendly smiles and quality instruction are the reasons people love our classes. SAMANTHA GERMANN INTERVAL TRAINING I am a CPTN certified personal trainer, working in my field for 3 years. When I began my journey I knew that weightlifting and fitness was crucial for me and my clients to achieve our physical goals but as time went on I realized how powerful an impact it had and continues to have on our minds.

My first goal is to create an environment that all fitness levels feel comfortable in. Participants can expect to see a variety of body weight and weight bearing exercises that are scaled to fit their personal fitness level but also give a little push each week so that they are consistently reaching their full potential. Every single day I get to walk alongside people as they discover power they didn’t know they possessed and gain confidence that they can carry with them outside the gym. I have the best job in the world! 8

Left: Samantha Germann; right, Carolynne Willis Backdrop: Carolynne Willis teaches a yoga class

CAROLYNNE WILLIS YOGA/MEDITATION INSTRUCTOR Yoga is a practice that connects the mind with the body. You can exercise all you want but unless we involve the mind, as in the quieting of it, and our emotions, it is very difficult to experience true wellness. I have worked in this field for six years. I really love to educate people about their bodies, movement patterns, and how to balance out the habits our western world creates in our bodies. Every class is different. Visitors will see a fun, informative, and creative approach to the yoga practice, lots of laughs and also my “what if” stories—I feel a yoga class should be a full experience so it is important to me to have a contemplative aspect to the practice. I always tell my students that I will never give them more than they can handle but I also won’t baby them. Yoga ultimately allows us to remember, not discover, but remember that we are all connected.

HELP REDUCE POOL CLOSURES A pool fouling will cause a closure of our pools anywhere from 1-24 hours. Here are some healthy habits you can take to stop the spread of germs and reduce the number of closures in our pools: •

Take your kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Waiting to hear “I have to go” may be too late.

The use of a swim diaper is mandatory to enter the pool if a child is not yet fully toilet trained.

Do not swim if you are feeling sick or have been sick in the past 24 hours. This is especially important for children in diapers.

Wash your body thoroughly with soap and water before swimming.

Thank you for your assistance in keeping our pool clean for all to enjoy.

26

SWIM LESSONS

Let’s get started! The most important step is to make sure your child is placed in the right swim level. Staff reserves the right to ask a child be moved to a different level if the class is too challenging, so it’s best to get it right.

SWIM

GENERAL INFORMATION

If you’re uncertain what level your child should be in, and/or the child has been out of lessons for more than a year, call the Swimplex at 519-886-1177 to arrange a free swim level evaluation. Or follow the recommendations from the child’s last progress report card, and review the detailed standards of performance for each level (online at waterloo.ca/swim/swimlevels). Requests for specific instructors are considered, but we are unable to guarantee that all requests can be granted. Registrations are accepted up to the start of the fifth lesson.

Making the most of your swim experience Leave your valuables at home and bring a lock to secure your belongings. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Shower with soap and water before your swim lesson. Footwear is not permitted on the pool deck. Be prepared to go barefoot, or purchase reusable shoe covers at the customer service desk for 75¢. Children who are not fully toilet trained must wear watertight elastic pants or specially designed

disposable swimming diapers, available at the customer service desk for $2.00. Do not send a child to lessons if they are not feeling well. Pool fouling affects all lessons. If a pool fouling happens, lessons are conducted on the pool deck instead of in the water. Refunds/credits are not given for pool foulings. If your child requires one-on-one support in our group lessons, please call the inclusion coordinator up to 3 weeks in advance, at 519-741-2200 ext. 7228. Volunteers are subject to availability.

What to expect Swimmers should go to the pool deck at the lesson start time and not earlier. Parents can escort their child on the first day to meet the instructor. Afterwards, spectators can watch swimmers from the second floor observation gallery.

Photography or videotaping is only permitted on the last day of lessons, subject to advance staff approval. The use of cell phones and PDAs is strictly prohibited in City of Waterloo recreation facility change rooms, washrooms, pool decks and gallery.

One parent is asked to meet the instructor on deck during the last 10 minutes of the sixth lesson to receive a verbal progress report.

In the event of bad weather, listen to local radio stations in case the program has been cancelled unexpectedly. We are unable to make up lessons cancelled due to emergency closures, but will credit the value of the missed class.

A written progress report is provided at the last lesson and will identify the next recommended swim level. Badges may be purchased at the customer service desk for all Waterloo Splash and Preschool levels.

Send a kid to camp and help Every Kid Count!

Each year, thousands of kids take part in our summer camps. For children with a disability, participation is made possible through support from the Every Kid Counts program. Every Kid Counts is a program that provides additional support to children and youth with a disability, enabling them to attend City of Kitchener or City of Waterloo camps. This program is made possible through community donations. Any amount helps. A donation of $400 ensures one child gets to attend camp for one week. Visit kitchener.ca/everykidcounts to learn more, or call us at 519-741-2200 ext. 7229, TTY 1-866-969-9994 and make a donation today!

HELP US PROTECT WATERLOO’S NATURAL AREAS Respect property boundaries Extending your property on to public land or natural areas is not permitted. Mowing or pruning natural areas, or using public land for garbage, yard waste, sheds, fences, play equipment, composters, vehicles and bird feeders smothers native vegetation, introduces non-native species, compacts soil and causes erosion. Drain pools and hot tubs properly Chemicals in hot tubs and pools can be harmful to vegetation and water features when drained into a park or natural area. Place the drain tube on your property, away from the park or natural area, to allow water to filter into the soils in your yard.

Let wildlife feed from the forest Wildlife relies on plants, soils and organic debris for survival. When people harvest from the forest, plants may be depleted allowing undesirable plants to establish. Enjoy native plants in your garden and leave the wild plants for the wildlife and future generations to admire. Respect our wildlife Waterloo is home to non-poisonous snakes. They are beneficial because they help keep local rodents in check – more so than cats! A snake will slither away when startled and will not hurt you. Respect wildlife and their habitat by observing wildlife from afar to avoid confrontation. Mammals and birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects foster healthy forests. Please do not destroy burrows, nests or other habitat and remember to always stay on designated trails.

Get involved! Our Partners in Parks program is a great opportunity for you and your neighbours to adopt a park and help keep it healthy with litter clean-ups and mulching trails.
