MEET THE TEAM
MEET TEAM #ACTIVEWATERLOO KEITH MCCARTHY Keith is a Skate Canada Coach, certified in the Canpower program. He has worked with TCHSS for approximately 15 years, and has been a head instructor for 12 years. “Participants in our programs will learn that hard work yields results. I watch skaters improve through constant effort. Skating ability is the biggest factor in how one enjoys and excels in ice sports. Our power skating program gives participants the extra edge to compete at any level. Teaching gives me the satisfaction of seeing participants improve. As an instructor my goal is to challenge and encourage every participant. Many of our participants remain with us for years, and seeing them evolve from season to season is my greatest reward. It’s why I love doing what I do. Our sessions are high paced and challenging. Skaters get clear instruction on technique, followed by individual correction, with drills that emphasize every skill taught, and are encouraged to push themselves to success.”

BRIAN ROMANY Brian specializes in hockey conditioning and is involved in training both amateur and professional local athletes for over 10 years. He brings a keen understanding of the game to our dryland training and TCHSS programs. “I love teaching because I find it rewarding to see the skaters improve with each class I teach. It is satisfying when students approach me on and off the ice and share their personal hockey achievements. A visitor to my sessions would see skaters having fun, being fully engaged and focused on skating drills. My sessions are well organized, with minimal waiting between drills and at a quick tempo. My power skating sessions are designed to help develop speed, balance, agility, body position, edge control, endurance coordination, stick control AND PASSION FOR THE GAME.”
The City of Waterloo and Twin City Hockey Skating School offer two week pre-season power skating clinics at RIM Park each August. Get your player prepared for the upcoming season! Read more on page 83.

Does your child want to volunteer at camp this summer? The YLDP is a mandatory program for all NEW camp volunteers. This counts as high school community service hours if the participant is currently enrolled in high school. This exciting program teaches participants leadership skills, with an emphasis on the skills required to be a future camp counsellor. Topics include communication, teamwork, program planning, child development, resume writing and more. Participants learn in a hands-on environment, which allows them to put their new skills in action during a camp placement. Participants learn how to lead games, songs and crafts; work with children of all abilities; build a resume and learn interview skills. Past YLDP participants expand on topics from the Level 1 program and lead activities and games during training and placement. Each participant receives leadership training; 2-week camp placement; manual, chance to see camp in action before placement, T-shirt and appreciation party. Appreciation party: Aug 22, 6:30-8:30pm Each participant is required to complete a two-week placement at one of the City Waterloo summer camps. Placements will be based on program demands. Volunteers may not receive their first or second choice, and must be flexible. 100% attendance is required during training weeks. For more information, visit waterloo.ca/camp RIM Park

SWIM LESSONS
Let’s get started! The most important step is to make sure your child is placed in the right swim level. Staff reserves the right to ask a child be moved to a different level if the class is too challenging, so it’s best to get it right.
SWIM
GENERAL INFORMATION
If you’re uncertain what level your child should be in, and/or the child has been out of lessons for more than a year, call the Swimplex at 519-886-1177 to arrange a free swim level evaluation. Or follow the recommendations from the child’s last progress report card, and review the detailed standards of performance for each level (online at waterloo.ca/swim/swimlevels). Requests for specific instructors are considered, but we are unable to guarantee that all requests can be granted. Registrations are accepted up to the start of the fifth lesson.
Making the most of your swim experience Leave your valuables at home and bring a lock to secure your belongings. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Shower with soap and water before your swim lesson. Footwear is not permitted on the pool deck. Be prepared to go barefoot, or purchase reusable shoe covers at the customer service desk for 75¢. Children who are not fully toilet trained must wear watertight elastic pants or specially designed
disposable swimming diapers, available at the customer service desk for $2.00. Do not send a child to lessons if they are not feeling well. Pool fouling affects all lessons. If a pool fouling happens, lessons are conducted on the pool deck instead of in the water. Refunds/credits are not given for pool foulings. If your child requires one-on-one support in our group lessons, please call the inclusion coordinator up to 3 weeks in advance, at 519-741-2200 ext. 7228. Volunteers are subject to availability.
What to expect Swimmers should go to the pool deck at the lesson start time and not earlier. Parents can escort their child on the first day to meet the instructor. Afterwards, spectators can watch swimmers from the second floor observation gallery.
Photography or videotaping is only permitted on the last day of lessons, subject to advance staff approval. The use of cell phones and PDAs is strictly prohibited in City of Waterloo recreation facility change rooms, washrooms, pool decks and gallery.
One parent is asked to meet the instructor on deck during the last 10 minutes of the sixth lesson to receive a verbal progress report.
In the event of bad weather, listen to local radio stations in case the program has been cancelled unexpectedly. We are unable to make up lessons cancelled due to emergency closures, but will credit the value of the missed class.
A written progress report is provided at the last lesson and will identify the next recommended swim level. Badges may be purchased at the customer service desk for all Waterloo Splash and Preschool levels.

A pool fouling will cause a closure of our pools anywhere from 1-24 hours. Here are some healthy habits you can take to stop the spread of germs and reduce the number of closures: • Take your kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Waiting to hear “I have to go” may be too late. • The use of a swim diaper is mandatory to enter the pool if a child is not yet fully toilet trained. • Do not swim if you are feeling sick or have been sick in the past 24 hours. This is especially important for children in diapers.
Thank you for your assistance in keeping our pool clean!
• Wash your body thoroughly with soap and water before swimming.
Course fees are listed on page 30.

Respect property boundaries Extending your property on to public land or natural areas is not permitted. Mowing or pruning natural areas, or using public land for garbage, yard waste, sheds, fences, play equipment, composters, vehicles and bird feeders smothers native vegetation, introduces non-native species, compacts soil and causes erosion. Respect our wildlife Waterloo is home to non-poisonous snakes, which are beneficial because they help keep local rodents in check – more so than cats! A snake will slither away when startled and will not hurt you. Respect wildlife and their habitat by observing wildlife from afar to avoid confrontation. Mammals and birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects foster healthy forests. Please do not destroy burrows, nests or other habitat and remember to always stay on designated trails.
IN YOUR CITY
HELP US PROTECT WATERLOO’S NATURAL AREAS Don’t disturb natural areas Ferns, leeks, berries and wood found in natural areas should be left alone. Planting vegetation, removing vegetation (including wood for firewood), controlling wildlife, creating new foot paths and dumping are all detrimental to Waterloo’s delicate ecosystems. The accumulated effect of these activities is costly to tax payers and creates great problems for the natural area. Plants are depleted past restoration, habitat, food and nutrients are lost, soils can become eroded, and invasive plants become established. Try planting your own native plants, found at most garden stores, in your own backyard to enjoy. This will help keep native plants for our wildlife and future generations. Drain pools and hot tubs properly Chemicals in hot tubs and pools can be harmful to vegetation and water features when drained into a park or natural area. Place the drain tube on your property, away from the park or natural area, to allow water to filter into the soils in your yard.
Be a steward of your neighbourhood’s natural areas through our Partners in Parks program To find out more, contact: City of Waterloo Environment and Parks Services P. 519.886.2310 TTY. 1.866.786.3941 E. environment@waterloo.ca
