FOOD WASTE COMPOSTING PROGRAM Expands to Meet Community Needs

PUBLIC SERVICE

The City of Westerville is adding new drop-off locations for its popular food waste composting program. Serviced by Springfield-based GoZero Services, collection receptacles were added to the former Senior Center building at 310 W. Main St. in April. Westerville Public Service Director Kevin Weaver says new locations are added to expand community participation in the program, which is now in its second year. “When we launched the program in 2020, we set a goal to collect 10 tons of material. We exceeded that goal in the first four months,” Weaver said. “The residents sent us a clear message that this program is needed and wanted.” As of May 2021, residents dropped off more than 100,000 lbs. of materials, diverting them from the landfill so they can instead become soil-enriching reusable compost. Weaver hopes to establish even more drop-off locations to make it easier for more people to participate. “Achieving a more sustainable community does not always require sweeping, life-altering changes. This program provides residents an incremental measure to have a positive impact,” he said. “We’re happy to make this program available to any resident who wants to participate.” More locations could be added in future months.
