FROM THE DIRECTOR

Greetings! We have officially finished our second year of offering programing to the Westfield community and we could not be happier. You have shown us that you like what you see! Programming attendance numbers have tripled since we began offering classes back in May of 2013! Some of our big favorites include Bingo Brunch for our seniors; Boot Camp, Yoga and cooking classes for adults. Kids from preschool to teens are enjoying the wide selection of sports, arts and fun educational programs that are offered. This edition of the Grand Guide is filled with wonderful programs for every member of your family. Some of our new offerings this season for adults are: Yoga by Candlelight; Card Making; Holiday Cooking Series; and Euchre Tournaments, just to name a few. For Kids we have new special programs such as: Nature Themed Pottery Classes; Fall Break Camps, Broadway Kidz and more! Please be sure to mark your calendars for some of the exciting and unique special events that we have planned. We are sure that we have something for everyone! To see a full list, please see page 4 for more information! With the weather getting chillier we hope you will still enjoy the outdoors and take advantage of all the indoor programs too. Last but not least, be sure to check out our news section as we highlight a brand new Smart Playground at Simon Moon Park and read about all of the cool things that it does! We are so excited to have the opportunity to bring these types of experiences as we strive to improve the overall quality of life here in the Westfield Community. Enjoy the Fall season in Westfield. We look forward to seeing you on the trails and in the parks! Melody Jones, CPRP, CPSI Director, Westfield Parks and Recreation

CHEF HEATHER MULLETT Amuse Bouche: Culinary Classes

Fall Break Preschool Adventure Camp

CLASSES LISTED ON PAGE 17

Chef Heather is an original Farm to Table chef. She was raised on a small farm in Oregon. On that farm, she grew up raising livestock, and always had a large farm garden. Instead of watching Saturday morning cartoons, she watched Julia Child on PBS. Her love for cooking was built early in life. And so, Chef Heather learned at a very young age to cook local and sustainable foods. As an adult, she joined the Navy and was stationed in San Diego for eight years. The military is a melting pot of so many different cultures and cuisines. Along the way, she grew fascinated with recreating those different dishes from different continental regions. Chef Heather will shake up your taste buds with delectable menus. She'll introduce your palate to new flavor combinations. Drawing from a local and sustainable foundation, Chef Heather concentrates on fresh and healthy ingredients in her cuisine. She creates delicious meals that are easy to prepare, packed with flavor and good for you! She is so excited to be able to share her love and passion of cooking real food to the Westfield community.

This program is designed to get your child comfortable with a structured program while having fun learning, socializing, and playing. Each day will have a different theme such as Transportation, Kitchen Fun, Dinosaurs, and many more. Each child will bring home a craft or memento from the day and will participate in circle time, snack time, and fun themed projects. We will also play fun games and activities that correlate with the theme of the day. AGES: 3-6 • MIN/MAX: 6/12 • FEE: $85 INSTRUCTOR:

Lisa Murphy is a resident of Westfield who enjoys photography among many other artistic outlets. Lisa has always had a love for crafts — in fact she has been stamping for almost 20 years! She is currently teaching a card making class at the Painted Cottage once a month. In 2013, Lisa started her own business called Designs by Lisa Murphy. Lisa’s craftiness can be associated with her passion for home décor and fashion. She loves turning “junk” into masterpieces for her home! She’s eager to show you all her love for card making and to show you how to add stylish personalization to cards! Lisa has been making personalized cards for years, and this is your chance to learn from a pro.

This class is designed to get your child active and moving. We will complete warm-up exercises, finger rhymes, and active games. We will do new things each week as well as repeat their favorites. LEGO® Animation in Motion Calling all filmmakers! Bring your creativity and help us make our own LEGO® Movie during our 6-wk class! You bring your ideas and we provide everything else. First, we will write a short story using everyone’s ideas, then we each build a LEGO character to act out a role in our story. Next, we will learn to use stop action animation to bring our LEGO story to life! Finally, we finish the movie by adding sounds and giving our voices to the characters. We will also post our new movie online for family and friends to see and share and of course you get to keep your character! AGES: 8-12 • MIN/MAX: INSTRUCTOR: Motions,

Winter Ginger Cookie Delight! NEW!

Come and learn exciting engineering skills as we explore 1-2 different projects each session. Some of our more famous projects include the exciting egg drop, building bridges, and even creating a roller coaster. We will start the session by using short hands on activities and discussions to build the basic skills needed to complete our project. After we have the basic skills understood, we will complete projects using the Engineering Design Loop. A Research, B - Brainstorm, C - Formulate, D - prototype of model, E - test and analyze, F - Redesign or Improve. We can even take pictures and video of the projects and post them online to share with friends and family.

Ready for a little sugar and a lot of spice!? If so, then here’s some advice: Join us as we gear up for the holiday season by exploring the world of the gingerbread man. We will be making mini gingerbread houses and people, all while learning how to decorate cookies like a pro! Each student will walk away with their own personal gingerbread house that all will marvel at! Come and taste a little and learn a lot - or, the other way around!

SEEDS OF KNOWLEDGE EDUCATIONAL SERIES The Hamilton County Master Gardener Association is part of the Purdue Master Gardener Program sponsored by Purdue Extension; its goal is to serve the gardening needs of the community. The Seeds of Knowledge series is presented by Master Gardeners on a variety of topics that will guide the home gardener through the challenges and rewards of the growing season in central Indiana. Sessions are interactive with lots of opportunity to not only share your own experiences but also get your individual questions addressed. Please see what we are offering below and join us for this fun and informative series!

Putting Your Garden to Bed

Creating Winter Interest in Your Garden

When the kids are back in school, football is in full swing and the leaves are turning all of those beautiful colors what do you do with the garden? You put it to bed! But that doesn't mean you just pick the last tomato and call it a day. In this presentation, we cover harvesting those final veggies, cleaning up beds, composting, cutting back selected plants, preparing for next year's garden and more

For many years the goal of every obsessed gardener has been to have a year-round display in the landscape. In Indiana this is straightforward in spring, summer and fall, but more of a challenge in winter and early spring. We tend to assume that we are stuck with the grays and blacks and whites of bare trees and snow. But with some planning that need not be the case. Through a combination of evergreen foliage color, variegation of bark and plant structure, we can all have gardens that make us smile all year long.

NEW SMART PARK EQUIPMENT AT SIMON MOON

facade, children can play with the crab and starfish game, manipulate the mermaid’s tail, and feel the grooves along her tail or the pearls in her hair. The play structure has room underneath for role-play to unfold. Fairy tales will inspire their play. Children’s imaginary play supports their language skills and understanding of the world.

On Saturday, May 2nd we welcomed the Westfield community to come and check out our new Smart Playground by KOMPAN during our Ribbon Cutting at Simon Moon Park! In the pictures below you will notice that The Little Mermaid herself even came and helped us welcome everyone!

Adults can scan the QR code on the playground structure with their smartphones to download apps. Not all children will know the fairy tales, but they can discover the full version of the fairy tales in e-book format and have it read to them by the app as they follow along with the words displayed on a smartphone or tablet. The app lets children enjoy the stories in 15 different languages. In addition, they will discover numerous educational games that are designed to further children’s interest in the stories. Parents and children can also enjoy the extra augmentedreality images to spark their imagination during play. This is an additional playground benefit to explore, but the playground works well without ever accessing the apps.

This unique play structure is designed to meet the increasing need for active, free outdoor play for children of all ages, and also to fulfill their desire for opportunities for playful social interaction with parents, teachers, and park program staff through physical, sensory, exploratory and role play. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales, the playground structure has two facades: one side tells the story of “The Ugly Duckling,” and the other side tells the story of “The Little Mermaid.” Children get to explore the fairy-tale stories through interaction with fascinating design details. The structure features numerous manipulatives offering an array of tactile and explorative experiences. On “The Ugly Duckling” side, children can move eggs along grooved openings, fill the scoops with playground material—grass, sand, berries or whatever is handy—and then dump them, or they can shift the duck’s tail or push down the hen’s head so she lays an egg. With “The Little Mermaid”
