FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to summer . . . After this winter it is great to be able to get outside and enjoy our Parks and Trails. It is time to look at new opportunities for recreation. This season’s program lineup will provide you with many new choices. Please take your time to look through the pages of the Grand Guide and decide what you and your family would like to register for this summer. In addition to all the great programing opportunities you will also find event information. On June 7th we are hosting the Bicycle Rodeo for the first time, and don’t forget to mark your calendar for July 4th and plan to attend Westfield Rocks the 4th 2014. Movies in the Park are back with five different nights including a double feature on September 26th. And while you are thinking ahead to all the great things to do in Westfield this summer start planning to build your Grand Junction Derby car to race in October at the Grand Junction Derby. Information for all of these activities are in this edition of the Grand Guide or you can check out our website for additional information. I hope to see you in the parks . . . Enjoy your summer! Video Game Design – Platform Games Summer Camp A platform game (or platformer) is a video game unique in that the player must navigate to the end of each level by means of a series of platforms. These platforms may either be suspended above the ground or placed at ground level. The game is two-dimensional and is controlled from the third-person point of view. The platformer is also complicated by the presence of enemies dispersed throughout the level that the player must defeat. The most famous example of a platform game is the Mario franchise. teen PROGRAMS Lego Mindstorm In Motion New from LEGO® Education is a fantastic program with open-ended, problem-solving activities that make learning STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) engaging and fun. The structure of the activities mimics the engineering design process used by scientists and engineers in many industries. Each project starts with a design briefly explaining the challenge, uses videos of robots in action to make real-world connections, and culminates in a final project that can be shared and presented. Throughout the process, students gain and use knowledge of science, technology, and mathematics as they engineer a solution. This structure is designed to help students develop the 21st-century, creative-thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills required for success in school and beyond. AGES:

WESTFIELD IN BLOOM FLORAL COMMITTEE PRESENTS: THE HAMILTON COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS ASSOCIATION SEEDS OF KNOWLEDGE SERIES

Water Conservation & Quality Basics

Invasives

Freshwater is a valuable but limited resource that faces threats of both quantity and quality. Join Claire Lane, the Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation District Backyard Conservation Coordinator, to learn about ways you can capture and reuse water on your property and ways to improve local water quality from home. Conservation practices such as rain barrels and cisterns, porous pavement, irrigation, in-home water conservation, and rain gardens will be discussed.

Invasives are non-native plants that threaten the community and decrease biodiversity. Do you have invasive plants? And if you do, what should you do do about it?

WESTFIELD IN BLOOM: planting pride in our community Westfield in Bloom (WIB) is a volunteer committee with a mission to instill a greater sense of civic pride and promote beautification through education and community involvement by encouraging the use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements. WIB, in partnership with Westfield Parks & Recreation, is currently made up of four subcommittees, each with its own unique projects and goals: Floral, Heritage, Community, and Environmental Awareness. The committee is always looking for new members, and anyone is welcome to attend the meetings on the first Thursday of every month at 7pm at the Main Street Programming Center, 330 E. Main Street.

HERITAGE COMMITTEE Do you have an interest in the history of Westfield? Join the Heritage Committee and get involved in making history come to life! The goal of this group is to combine resources with organizations such as the Westfield Washington Historical Society in an effort to heighten the community’s awareness of Westfield’s heritage. In 2014, the Heritage Committee will be hosting the fourth annual “Voices from the Past” living history walk. “Voices from the Past” is a unique way to learn about Westfield’s history through the lives of former citizens. Attendees are guided on a journey into the past through two historic cemeteries where they hear first person interpretations of some of Westfield’s historic citizens, portrayed by Westfield Playhouse actors. Get involved with planning one of Westfield’s most unique events by joining the Heritage Committee!

20

COMMUNITY COMMITTEE The primary initiative of the Community Committee is participation in Plant a Row (PAR) for the Hungry. PAR is rooted in the gardeners’ tradition of sharing bountiful harvest with others. The plan is simple – we ask you to plant an additional row of vegetables, fruits, or herbs in your garden and deliver the harvest to one of our drop-off sites, and the donated produce will be delivered to local food pantries. Through PAR, citizens are able to truly be a part of their community and help those in need. In the last four years, well over two tons of fresh produce has been donated to local food pantries. Much of this produce came from the PAR committee garden. The committee is always looking for active members to help plan, plant, and maintain the gardens, as well as promote the initiative throughout the community. Get involved in this wonderful program by joining the committee or simply by planting an extra row in your own garden!

www.westfield.in.gov/parks

317-804-3183

FLORAL COMMITTEE WIB’s inaugural committee, generously sponsored by Heartland Growers, organizes and participates in beautification projects such as planting the downtown planter boxes, Community Plant Day, the Floral Display Competition and more! A predominant color is selected each year to help provide unity throughout the community. This color is utilized in the hanging baskets and planters downtown, in the garden beds in the parks, and residents are encouraged to feature it in their own gardens. The Floral Committee is pleased to announce that the 2014 color is RED! Start planning your gardens today, and join us for our next meeting to get involved in the 2014 initiatives.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS COMMITTEE The EAC was formed to help promote an environmentally sustainable community by increasing environmental awareness in Westfield. In 2013, the EAC focused on water conservation education through hosting a series of workshops. The EAC recently hosted the third annual Build-a-Box Birdhouse Building workshop. Get involved in this great group and be a part of developing the 2014 initiatives! One goal will be continuing the Adopt-a-Prairie program to help maintain the prairie establishment at Freedom Trail Park (shown above).
