FROM THE DIRECTOR
As I write this in my living room the view from my window is white and bleak! Hopefully, things have improved by now. I am really looking forward to spring and summer this year! Getting out in the parks or on the trails helps us all reconnect after a cold winter. Happy spring! Westfield Parks and Recreation is kicking off another spring/summer season with many wonderful new offerings. Brittany has listened to your requests and has provide a wide variety of programs and activities for the whole family. You will find exciting and brand new programs for all ages! Check out all the camps for preschool and youth: Everything from Fairy Tale Dance Camp to Engineering in Motion. We have something for every 6 to 12 year old. Do you have a teen athlete? Please check out Football Nutrition. For adults there is a new series of cooking classes; what a fun thing to do as a couple to pick up ideas for your next summer party. There have been several requests to offer needlecrafts, so we are offering three new quilting classes. We are also excited to take your programs outside. How about a yoga class at Asa Bales Park? These are just a few examples of new offerings for you to enjoy. In addition to programming we will be hosting several great special events. Starting in June we will be celebrating National Trails Day; in July Westfield Rocks the 4th on July 4th; Movies in the Park starts in July and continues into September; and this year we are partnering with the Emily Yott Foundation to help raise funds for them in August. Please see the event pages in the Grand Guide for more information or check out our website. We hope to be a great part of your summer. I look forward to seeing you in the parks! Summer Porch Tales
Saturday, June 13th • 4 p.m. • The Corner of Mill & Jersey Street, Westfield Long summer evenings are perfect for music and picnics, but for generations it was about storytelling from the porch swing. Without the distractions of television and smart phones, grandparents recounted tales of their youth, or their parents’ youth, to fascinated youngsters over a bowl of ice cream, late into the evening. This little piece of history is recreated in four free family friendly storytelling performances in Hamilton County communities in June 2015, including Westfield. Bring the blanket and the picnic basket filled with your family’s favorite summertime treats and enjoy a simple evening of porch tales featuring regionally recognized storytellers. All performances are about 90 minutes. In addition to the Westfield date, try different Storytelling Arts Summer Porch Tales free in Carmel, Fishers, and Noblesville! Visit StorytellingArts.org for more information. Made possible by support from Visit Hamilton County and Storytelling Arts of Indiana, as well as each host location.
7th Annual Floral Display Competition Judging Date: Saturday, June 27th Free and open to residents, neighborhoods, businesses, and organizations, the Floral Display Competition helps keep Westfield beautiful. Electronic Game Design: Platform Games Camp
Cheer Camp
Electronic game design is one of the most imagination driven forms of engineering. Physics or real world issues do not bind video game designers unlike conventional engineers. During the Electronic Game Design: Platform classes, students will use Multimedia Fusion 2® to create their own video game. A platform game is a side-scrolling, Mario-type game where students program characters and a two-dimensional obstacle course. They attempt to avoid or overcome enemies and reach an end goal on multiple levels. At the end of the class, students take home a copy of the game they create.
Our Cheer Camp is a week of learning about all aspects of cheer; cheer jumps, cheer hop (hip hop for cheerleading), basic/ simple stunting (age appropriate), and tumbling for cheerleaders. We introduce the young cheerleaders to the basic concepts of cheering, as well as tricks to mastering the more difficult jumps, tumbling and stunting in cheerleading, when applicable. Baton and daily snack included.

QUILTING CLASSES: COTTON THEORY
Paint a Sunflower on Canvas
NEW!
Cotton Theory quilting is a fast, fun, and unique way to construct a quilt using Betty Cotton’s fold-and-finish procedures. Quilting your project is easy with this method since you quilt each piece individually before you construct your project. So, whatever the size of your quilt, the quilting becomes just as enjoyable as piecing together the design. This “Quilt first, then assemble” method allows to you to see your reversible quilt come together by constructing one project. You can be as creative as your imagination will allow while producing completely reversible quilts with bobbin work, applique, and machine embroidery, if you so desire. Furthermore, all work is done with a sewing machine, even the binding, so there’s no need to do handwork.
Painting is a wonderful way of expressing yourself. Whether you are new to acrylic painting or have been painting for a while, you will learn new brush strokes and which brushes to use for these strokes. Bring a friend and make it a special outing. Marilyn has been teaching oil and acrylic for over 30 years. Come and join us for fun and education. All materials will be provided.

PARKS & RECREATION
GRAND JUNCTION NEWS Communities have stories to tell, and the next chapter of Westfield’s story is about to begin. Grand Junction Plaza is designed to be a downtown destination that residents and visitors can interact with 365 days a year. A park for all seasons, Grand Junction Plaza will be home to a 10.5 acre park that will include a concert and performance venue, a great lawn, ice skating rink, riparian walkway, play nature area and more. Residents of Westfield will see dirt begin to move on this project this year. The Grand Junction Plaza will tell the story of a community coming together – of a community vision made real. From a downtown revitalization concept that began almost a decade ago, the idea of Grand Junction has grown into a community’s connecting hub. It will be a place residents feel proud to call their own and a place where visitors feel at home.
Grand Junction will be "a park for all seasons."
Grand Junction will provide programmable space for the entire year to the Parks Department, making sure residents can visit it at any time. It will also serve as the connecting point for the Anna Kendal and Midland Trace trails, further enhancing the walkability of the community and connecting the downtown to the rest of Westfield. The City of Westfield has partnered with renowned landscape architecture and urban design studio LAND COLLECTIVE to make this vision a reality. LAND COLLECTIVE is an empathy driven design firm devoted to creating landscapes that synthesize art, technology and the social sciences. LAND COLLECTIVE has created projects for Eskenazi Health, the Naional Mall, Yale School of Management, the US Embassy (London) and UC Berkeley. Other key collaborators include: Hollwich Kushner Architects (HWKN), Tillett Lighting Design, Bruce Mau Design, Stantec, ETM Associates, and FlatLand Resources. We are excited about reaching this stage in our Grand Junction Plaza project. Stay tuned to our progress by following us on Facebook and Twitter. Grand Guide

Currently, there are 12 miles of trails owned and maintained by the City of Westfield Parks and Recreation Department. An additional 83 miles of connector trails can be found in Washington Township. There are also 44 miles of additional trails proposed at the present time which, if created, would bring our trail total to almost 140 miles!
