FROM THE DIRECTOR
Here we are about to enter into a brand new year, after having a memorable 2014! We have new additions to the Park staff such as Candice Hughes and Emily Clark, where you will find their bios below. These ladies will help make the future programs and events the best they can be for all of Westfield to enjoy. As you look through this edition of the Grand Guide, note what is new in programing such as cooking classes, clay animation, referee certification classes and some of our very own Westfield High School coaches stepping up to promote their sports in a classroom setting. We hope you will find many offerings that you will just have to register for. If you have an idea for a new program you would like to take part in, or if you are interested in being an instructor for a new program, we want to hear from you. Please share this information with our Program Coordinator, Brittany Goger as we desire to offer the programs you love. We are looking forward to the New Year but cannot move ahead without recognizing all of those who supported us in 2014. On page 5 you will see a list of all the businesses who were sponsors and organizations that partnered with us last year. We are so fortunate to live in a community where so many people step up and volunteer with the parks department. Hundreds of people, giving hundreds of hours, help us make sure we are able to host programs and events. For the first time in 2014, we celebrated with you. We gave four special awards to those who gave so much. This will continue for many years to come. Please join us in thanking those who have supported our community. The Business Partner of the Year was: CSI Signs. CSI has sponsored every event we hosted in 2014 and worked with us on all of our signage and banners for each event. The Partner of the Year was: City Spring Church. City Spring partnered with us to host all of the Movies in the Park events which included providing all of the technology and equipment for the movies. In addition, City Spring provided barricade volunteers and marketing support for Westfield Rocks the 4th and organized/managed the Kids Area for the Grand Junction Derby. The Most Supportive City Employee outside the Park Department was: Teresa Evans. Teresa designed and created all the marketing materials for the Parks Department Special Events and most of the programs. Teresa’s contributions saved the department a large amount of funding and timing. The fact that she does not work in the Park Department is amazing. A special thanks to her boss, Derrick Cash that gives her the flexibility to work alongside us. The Volunteer of the Year was: Bob Wilkinson. It is hard to capture all that Bob has done in 2014, but here are some highlights: Bob served as the Chairman for the Headliner Car Show which is part of Westfield Rocks the 4th. Bob spent hundreds of hours promoting this event throughout the spring car show season and then countless hours organizing the event itself. Bob also volunteers for Westfield in Lights, the Grand Junction Derby and Race to the New Year. Bob is irreplaceable to our department. In addition to volunteering opportunities with Westfield in Bloom we are happy to introduce our new trail volunteer program called Trail Ambassadors. Please visit our website or call Emily Clark for more information. Last but not least, have you noticed new trail connections? Many trail construction projects are underway throughout Westfield. The planning for future trails and the new park downtown are also moving ahead, which you can read all about in the NEWS section on page 21-22. Happy New Year! I hope to see you in the parks….

meet the staff Brittany Goger, Recreation Program Coordinator
Candice Hughes,
Emily Clark,
Brittany has been with the City of Westfield since January 2013 beginning as the Parks Administrative Assistant. In January of 2014 she took on the role of Recreation Program Coordinator. She has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Park and Recreation Management from Indiana University with a background of helping lead several day camps and programs through summer jobs and her internship with Fishers Parks and Recreation. She is eager to see the exciting changes take place within the Westfield Community through Grand Junction, Grand Park and the growth of the Main Street Facility and is excited to offer a variety of programs for all ages!
A new addition to the team, Candice Hughes now serves as the Special Events Coordinator. She earned her B.S. in Tourism, Conventions, and Event Management at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. While earning her degree, she received the opportunity to become a member of the opening team at the JW Marriott Indianapolis where she worked over 250 events including the Super Bowl. She has also gained valuable experience in festivals while at The Spirit & Place Festival based in Indianapolis and in sporting events through the 2012 Kentucky Derby in Louisville. She exhibits a fierce drive to maintain those admirable relationships with people who lend such wonderful support to this department and is fueled by the city’s future within events. She is excited to be a part of a community that will make it happen!
Emily Clark recently joined the City of Westfield in October 2014 as the Administrative Assistant. In August, she earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Tourism, Conventions and Event Management from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Emily’s background includes working as an Administrative Assistant for two years, planning special events, and volunteering in the community. As Administrative Assistant, Emily is eager to assist with processing matters, parks operations, programming, and event planning.

My name is Dana Goot and I am thrilled to be partnering with Westfield Parks and Recreation for pregnancy related classes. I have been a Bradley Method® Natural Childbirth instructor for 24 years and am proud to teach a method that has a less than 10% caesarean section rate and to share my knowledge with the Westfield Community. Through Westfield Parks and Recreation I am offering a class that is designed to prepare your body for birth and to handle the discomforts of pregnancy through exercise. You will also learn relaxation techniques to ease your mind and body in preparation for and to use during labor. All questions about pregnancy and birth are welcome, so we will have some interesting and fun discussions! You'll see that my picture shows me in front of a piano. My other profession is as a vocalist and music educator. I've sung with Madonna at the Superbowl Half-time Show, the National Anthem at a Colts game and in places as far away as Rome and Israel. Soon I will be offering music programs through Westfield Parks and Recreation that will be involved in their holiday programs. Feel free to contact me with questions about any of my offerings through Westfield Parks and Recreation, 317-566-8991 or danalkg@yahoo.com.

Claymation in Motion
This class is a must do for every person that is wanting to be an actor! Ever heard of claymation? During the first class, we start with a premise, and the class develops a plot and script mad-lib style using your ideas. Each participant chooses a character to build using the character kits we provide. We will show you how to build your character and get you started, then you can take your kit home to complete him/her/it exactly the way you want. Beginning in week two, we film our stop-action animation movie using the characters you’ve built. We finish the class by animating the movie and adding a soundtrack using the voices of the class participants. We post the movie online for easy sharing and you get to keep the character you built!

Natural childbirth is an important goal since most people want to give their babies every possible advantage, without the side effects of drugs given during labor and birth. The Bradley Method® classes teach families how to have natural births. The techniques are simple and effective. They are based on information about how the human body works during labor. Couples are taught how they can work with their bodies to reduce pain and make their labors more efficient. Of over 1,000,000 couples trained in The Bradley Method® nationwide, over 86% of them have had spontaneous, un-medicated vaginal births. This is a method that works!

Planting pride in our community Westfield in Bloom (WIB) is a volunteer committee with a mission to instill a greater sense of civic pride and promote beautification through education and community involvement by encouraging the use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements. WIB, in partnership with Westfield Parks & Recreation, is currently made up of four sub-committees, each with its own unique projects and goals: Floral, Heritage, Community, and Environmental Awareness. The committee is always looking for new members, and anyone is welcome to attend the meetings on the first Thursday of every month at 7pm at the Main Street Programming Center, 330 E. Main Street.
HERITAGE COMMITTEE Do you have an interest in the history of Westfield? Join the Heritage Committee and get involved in making history come to life! The goal of this group is to combine resources with organizations such as the Westfield Washington Historical Society in an effort to heighten the community’s awareness of Westfield’s heritage. In September of 2015, the Heritage Committee will be hosting the fifth annual “Voices from the Past” living history walk. “Voices from the Past” is a unique way to learn about Westfield’s history through the lives of former citizens. Attendees are guided on a journey into the past through two historic cemeteries where they hear first person interpretations of some of Westfield’s historic citizens, portrayed by Westfield Playhouse actors. Get involved with planning one of Westfield’s most unique events by joining the Heritage Committee!
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS COMMITTEE The EAC was formed to help promote an environmentally sustainable community by increasing environmental awareness in Westfield. Get involved in this great group and be a part of developing the 2015 initiatives! One goal will be continuing the Adopt-a-Prairie program to help maintain the prairie establishment at Freedom Trail Park. Your organization, group, family, team, or company can “own” a section of the prairie at Freedom Trail Park in exchange for helping maintain it - only a three day per year commitment! We have also recently added our new Trail Ambassadors program which you can find more about by going to our website.
COMMUNITY COMMITTEE The primary initiative of the Community Committee is participation in Plant a Row (PAR) for the Hungry. PAR is rooted in the gardeners’ tradition of sharing bountiful harvest with others. The plan is simple – we ask you to plant an additional row of vegetables, fruits, or herbs in your garden and deliver the harvest to one of our drop-off sites, and the donated produce will be delivered to local food pantries. Through PAR, citizens are able to truly be a part of their community and help those in need. In the last five years, well over two tons of fresh produce has been donated to local food pantries. Much of this produce came from the PAR committee garden. The committee is always looking for active members to help plan, plant, and maintain the gardens, as well as promote the initiative throughout the community. Get involved in this wonderful program by joining the committee or simply by planting an extra row in your own garden! Grand Guide

WESTFIELD IN BLOOM, CONT. FLORAL COMMITTEE WIB’s inaugural committee, generously sponsored by Heartland Growers, organizes and participates in beautification projects such as planting the downtown planter boxes, Community Plant Day, the Floral Display Competition and more! A predominant color is selected each year to help provide unity throughout the community. The Floral Committee is pleased to announce that the 2015 color is ORANGE! This color is utilized in the hanging baskets and planter’s downtown, in the garden beds in the parks, and residents are encouraged to feature it in their own gardens. Begin planning your gardens today, and join us for our next meeting to get involved in the 2015 initiatives.

The circuit begins with a spark – that serendipitous, charge-filled connection between people – which activates public space, fosters conversations and elevates culture. It completes a continuous loop that connects the citizens of Westfield. That circuit is formed in The Junction that links four key trails: Asa Bales, Natalie Wheeler, Anna Kendall, and the Midland Trace.

PARKS & RECREATION
The Junction is where iconic architecture, extraordinary gathering spaces, events, and multiple trails join to form Westfield’s park for all seasons.
As you know, we start with an idea. That idea grows and planning begins. Then excitement builds and concepts are created. The momentum is sparked and those concepts become designs. The community supports the project and so funding is made available. Then the project is built. So many steps to be taken before we will see the final results. Each step is important, takes time and cannot be left out. Every time you are enjoying an amenity or facility in the Westfield remember all that it takes to make it possible. There are so many projects at different stages of planning going on all around town. It is exciting times. The future is exciting and we are glad to be able to bring quality facilities to our community. We appreciate your continued support.
Westfield is all about Trails.
The Westfield City Council approved a revision to the Special Event Policy allowing the Park Department to make available the Main Street Facility for rent. Consisting of three rooms, this space will be perfect for your next special event. Contact Emily Clark in the parks administrative office for details. Grand Junction’s development and exposure is something we are very proud to say is part of Westfield’s future. We hope you have been seeing and hearing about it. A year long process to develop a strategic plan for the downtown area including and surrounding Grand Junction, known as the Cultural Collaborative, has completed the Strategic Plan . This all volunteer lead effort will help enhance and foster the downtown (Grand Junction) stakeholder’s cooperation to maximize Grand Junction’s potential as a destination. The Junction will be the centerpiece of Grand Junction. The ten acre park will include beautiful architecture, fountains, green space, enhanced waterways, plaza, ice skating, and an entertainment venue. However the best thing of all is it will create a gathering space, a location where connections are made. Land Collective, HWKN and the rest of the design team have assembled to create a masterpiece. The Westfield Parks and Recreation Department is
already developing events and programs for this beautiful park. For updated information on the final plans and construction dates please visit the park website often. Note the new graphics that share images of the park. Please share your support for this wonderful downtown amenity.
We will continue to identify priorities for making connections. The Monon Trail north of State Road 32 is in several different stages. At this time, the crossing of the trail on State Road 32 will take place using the traffic light at Wheeler Road and State Road 32. Future plans will include a pedestrian bridge over the highway. With the US31 project, INDOT will be building the Monon Trail on the west side of the new Wheeler Road, which will continue to 186th Street. North of 186th, Phase 6 will return to the old railroad corridor and continue to include a trailhead at Monon Elementary School. The trailhead will have paved parking, benches, drinking fountain and restrooms. Phase 7 is from the Monon Elementary School to 216th Street. When Phase 7 is completed Westfield will have built the entire length of the Monon Trail through Washington Township. All 8 miles! Hamilton County Parks will continue the project and the connection to Sheridan.
Site Plan. The Junction is a collaboration between The City of Westfield and LAND COLLECTIVE, Hollwich Kushner Architects, Bruce Mau Design, Tillett Lighting Design, STANTEC, Flatland Resources, ETM Associates, Wilson Consulting, RTM, KJWW, FRP, and LED.

Winter/Spring 2015
In 2014 we were able to re-stone the shoulders of the Monon Trail from 146th Street to 161st Street, and pave the stoned section of the Monon Trail from 161st Street up to and including the trail section in Quaker Park. We know this has been a highly anticipated project. We are so glad to have it completed. continued, page 22 21

As we mentioned earlier, The Junction plans are being finalized. In order to be able to build in this area the City needs to create Regional Detention. Not only will regional detention help with storm water storage for the park but also provide storage for new development in downtown. The Anna Kendall Creek, which will run through Grand Junction, will be accompanied by the Anna Kendall Trail and extend southward from the park. A section of the trail has already been built with the Union Street Flats development and will connect to 161st Street upon completion.

Land is being acquired to extend the Midland Trace Trail from Gunther to Gray Road along the east side of the road. Our goal is to complete this phase in 2015. Noblesville has plans underway that will start at Gray Road and move east. Other sections of the Midland Trace Trail on the west side are being developed. Westfield Parks and Recreation will be working on land acquisition from Quaker Park over to Austrian Pine Way to make that connection. Other sections of the trail will be completed with new development from Springmill Road over to Ditch.

the Monon Trail to Asa Bales Park. These three trail connections, along with all of the sidewalks, will be included at the US 31 interchanges. They will make Westfield more connected than ever before. Three new Connecting Trails were completed in 2014. The trail section on the east side of Carey Road south of 169th Street was constructed in 2014 and will provide connections with new development from 146th Street to the Midland Trace Trail. Along 156th Street from Oak Ridge to Springmill Road gaps in the connecting trail along the north side of the road was paved in the fall. In addition a sidewalk connection was made for the internal sidewalk in Springmill Ponds to Oak Ridge Road. These two connections and future roundabouts will provide connections for many of the western subdivisions to the Monon Trail. The third connection was paved on the north side of 161st Street.
