Westfield’s Hospitality Coordinator Rhonda Daly helps us get in shape after the holidays.

LETTER FROM THE MAYOR Welcome, everyone, to a new year in Westfield! I hope the holiday season treated you well and that you are ready to hit the ground running in 2015. This year we have a lot of great things coming down the pike. We will see the Grand Junction project begin to take shape in our downtown as we begin the first phase of this important project. We will also see more private development occur at Grand Park, as the two indoor facilities, a hotel and Grand Park Village begin construction. It will all be an exciting next step for Westfield’s growth.

Speaking of construction, congrats to Westfield resident Joe Dewing! Joe was a winner in Black and Decker’s Big Finish contest, and his project was featured on a billboard in Times Square in New York City! Way to represent Westfield in the Big Apple, Joe! (It may not be Times Square, but we’ve also featured Joe’s billboard here in Your City Matters. Just look up in the left-hand corner of this page.) As we begin a new year, I’d like to take a moment to remind all of you that a great way to stay apprised of what is going on in the city is to follow us on Facebook (facebook.com/CityofWestfield), Twitter (@CityofWestfield) and through our city app (available for iTunes and Google Play). We also invite you to follow our hospitality coordinator on Twitter @wstfldwelcome. You can also stay up-to-date on snow removal, road projects and economic development projects by visiting our website (www.westfield. in.gov) and utilizing our interactive maps. Tabs to the maps are found on the home page.

UPDATES GET FIT WITH RHONDA! If you’re like me, you may have put on a few extra pounds this holiday season. With so many family gatherings, festive feasts at work and Christmas cookies laying around everywhere you look, it’s not too difficult to put a little strain on your belt buckle. So what’s a girl to do? Well, it’s a new year and that means it’s time to get back in shape. And what better way than to take advantage of Westfield’s very own nutrition and fitness providers?! I set out to explore a few of the places Westfield has to offer that could help us get healthy. My Father’s Garden is a great local business right downtown Westfield. I stopped in to talk to Betsy, who told me that in addition to all of the great vitamins, healthy foods and lovely bath soap, visitors to the shop could also schedule a massage or take a nice relaxing break in the infrared sauna!

HOT EATS, COOL TREATS! Once home to the world’s largest Dairy Queen, now Westfield is excited to welcome a new and fresh DQ! The popular fast food chain is mixing up blizzards and flipping burgers to crowds every night. Dairy Queen offers a number of sweet treats as well as a variety of affordable meals. The restaurant is located off of State Road 32 on Wheeler Road.

“Some people can’t handle a steam sauna,” Betsy explained as she showed me the sauna. “So, this is an alternative that can give them the same experience in terms of a resting cardio workout.”

I heard the words “resting” and “workout” and was immediately sold. Where do I sign up? I decided to take a quick trip to T3 Cycling and Triathlon, another Westfield fitness destination. T3 recently moved to Westfield from their 86th Street location. They’ve got a great selection of bikes for virtually any need: road bikes, triathlon, mountain bikes, etc. I of course went right for a cute little threespeed emblazoned in my precious Butler blue. Who needs to spend a fortune on wheels when this little cruiser will get me around Westfield just fine?! Afterward, I popped next door to get a snack at the Fresh Market. With so much fresh fruit and veggies, it’s easy to keep your belly full but still maintain a balanced, healthy diet. And with gyms like Anytime Fitness, LA Fitness and pilates workouts, there’s no excuse why I can’t keep moving when I need to burn some calories. What have I missed? Let me know if your business can contribute to Westfield’s health by emailing me at rdaly@westfield.in.gov. And be sure to like Westfield Welcome on Facebook and Twitter (@wstfldwelcome)! There’s no time like the present, so let’s get out there and get healthy!

COMING SOON: ALDI! The grocery store that prides itself on high quality at impossibly low prices is coming soon to Westfield. Aldi will be opening its doors February 6th in the Greyhound Plaza shopping center on the West side of US 31 near 146th Street. The company says customers can save up to 50% on their grocery bill compared to other supermarkets. Aldi also focuses on being friendly to the environment by encouraging their customers to bring their own bags or buy reusable bags at check out. Please stop by in February and enjoy a unique shopping experience.

DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHT:

PUBLIC WORKS

Westfield’s Public Works department is unveiling a new interactive map designed to help residents track snow plowing as winter weather comes once again to town. This winter, residents can log onto Westfield’s home page and track snow and ice removal during winter weather events via an interactive map. “Our interactive maps are one of the most powerful tools at our disposal to deliver information,” said Public Works Director Ken Alexander. “By creating processes within our snow removal team, we have effectively created real-time information to share with our residents.” To view the snow removal map, simply visit www.westfield.in.gov. From the home page, click on the tab labeled “Snow Removal.” You will be redirected to an interactive map that will allow you to keep track of the city’s snow plowing efforts during winter weather events.

GRAND PARK UPDATE The City of Westfield received a 2014 Awards of Excellence Award from the Indiana Park and RecreationAssociation (IPRA) for Grand Park. “Weare thrilled to receive this recognition for Grand Park,” Mayor Andy Cook said.“The impact the park is bringing to Westfield and the surrounding communitiesis already being felt. We are excited about what we’ve been able to accomplishand what the future holds for Grand Park.” Each year, IPRA Awards of Excellence are presented to individuals and agencies across Indiana to honor their efforts - both personally and professionally in the field of Parks and Recreation. Winners are evaluated by their peers in the industry based upon a scoring system for quality of the project, impact on the community, creative solutions as well as other criteria. IPRA will present the award publicly at a special awards banquet at the IPRA State Conference in Michigan City on January 15, 2015.
