The Team! #64

APRIL 2015 Kinda Al Faris Executive Editor

Dear Readers, It feels like such a long time since I last wrote my monthly letter. I've been working on a summit that will be taking place in May. It feels like it's taking forever and boy have I been tired.

ON THE COVER: MEGHAN TRAINOR

COVER DESIGN: Ali N. Aziz Instagram & Twitter: @wpapart

This month has been a rather strange and hectic one, filled with challenges and surprises, and although I love a little bit of both admittedly, I have worn myself out trying to bridge the gaps between the excitement and much needed serenity. So, in order to catch up I've had to defer this months column to next month, but I have a pleasant surprise in store for then. I want to apologize for spelling Fabrice's last name wrong in last months issue (the correct spelling is Mareau).

TOP SECRETS TO HAPPY MARRIAGES The wedding industry is seeing the biggest boom worldwide and what does this tell you? There are huge numbers of people around the globe wanting to tie the knot, get married and commit to each other. The flip side to this is the growing divorce rate with more and more couples separating and ending their marriages. Zahra Taqi Zahra is a Certified Professional Coach and the President of Milestones Coaching. She would love to hear back from you. So please feel free to drop her a line on her email: zahrataqi@gmail. com or find her on FB: http://www. facebook.com/MilestonesCoaching or twitter: @MilestonesCoach

In life, there are couples who radiate happiness or who seem to have a special connection between them. Looking at these couples, you probably wonder: “What do they have that my partner and I don’t?” I will share a few secrets with you today that will allow you and your partner to be one of those couples; successful, happy and well adjusted.

Top Secrets: 1.Successful couples are in their marriages for the long haul; their relationship is not temporary and is not a phase in their lives. Successful couples understand they are together in this marriage for a lifetime, meaning that divorce is not an option. Working with the intention that this is for better or for worse “till death do you part” so to speak, you will both do everything in your power to make it work. 2.Successful couples know that a crisis is just that: a crisis. It is not the end to their life together but it is the perfect opportunity for growth. A crisis teaches you a lot about your partner and also about yourself, so treat it as a teaching opportunity and not as your doom. 3.Successful couples enjoy each other’s company; they are friends before they are lovers. A happy marriage is not only about passion but also about companionship and successful couples understand this important point. These couples enjoy time together and look forward to connecting with each other. Take a walk with your partner, connect at the end of your day, go out for a date or schedule a mini vacation; do whatever works for you but make sure that you connect with each other. 4.Successful couples fight fairly. When you live with

citypageskuwait.com

someone every day and share your whole life with them, there are bound to be misunderstandings and conflicts (which are healthy and normal). The way you fight is what is important and not the fact that you are fighting. Successful couples do not use namecalling and they always understand that their spouses are their partners and not their adversaries. 5.Successful couples seek and offer forgiveness. They may not forgive and forget, but they do forgive and let it go. When they have done something wrong or hurtful, they offer an apology. When they are the wronged party, they accept the gift of an apology. Successful couples travel the pathway toward forgiving, which is outlined by author Clarissa Pinkola Estes, who cites these four stages for arrival at complete forgiveness: a.Forgo: Take a break from thinking about the person or event for a while. b.Forebear: Abstain from punishing, neither thinking about it nor acting on (the offense) in small or large ways. Give a bit of grace to the situation. c.Forget: Refuse to dwell; let go and loosen one's hold, particularly on memory. To forget is an active, not passive, endeavor. d.Forgive: Make a conscious decision to cease to harbor resentment, which includes forgiving a debt and giving up one's resolve to retaliate. Just like everything you do successfully in life, marriage will require a great effort, lots of hard work and continuous learning. It will also require a great deal of commitment to one another and to your relationship together but when you do it all with love then it will bloom and you will reap the benefits of your hard work. . “All things need watching, working at, caring for, and marriage is no exception. Marriage is not something to be indifferently treated or abused, or something that simply takes care of itself. Nothing neglected will remain as it was or is, or will fail to deteriorate. All things need attention, care and concern, and especially so in this most sensitive of all relationships of life.” -Richard L. Evans

CELEBRATING

ST. GEORGE

Gill Sherry Gill is a qualified insurance broker, working in the insurance sector in the UK for almost 30 years. Now a blogger and creative writer, she has joined CityPages as our Group Editor. Readers can look forward to Gill’s regular and varied contribution to the magazine.

St. George is the patron saint of England so myself and my fellow countrymen will be celebrating St. George’s Day on April 23rd. And what better day to remember those things which are so typically English? The “Sunday roast” for example, is our national dish. But surprisingly, many English traditions are also enjoyed here in Kuwait. The Sunday Roast – Traditionally, this consists of roast beef, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and gravy. It is enjoyed by the whole family on a Sunday afternoon. Sometimes, lamb or chicken is served instead of beef and mashed potatoes may be added. A Saturday equivalent is available at Café Society, The Levels, Mahboula. Afternoon Tea – The original (and arguably the best) Afternoon Tea is served at The Ritz Hotel in London. Their selection of sandwiches, scones, pastries and cakes will satisfy even the healthiest of appetites. This concept has been replicated by hotels the world over and is available in a number of establishments here in Kuwait. But afternoon tea doesn’t have to come with a mountain of sandwiches and cakes. For a simple cup of tea and a cake of your choice, head down to Flower Latte Café’ at SOMU Square, Souq Al-Mubarakiya. Your tea will be served in an adorable mismatch of delicate china with paper doilies and quaint silver spoons. English Breakfast – Not everyone likes a heavy

citypageskuwait.com

meal first thing in the morning but for some, only a full English breakfast will do. A variety of cooked breakfasts can be found across Kuwait from a simple Egg Muffin in a budget burger chain to deluxe Eggs Benedict in a top class hotel. The seaside – You can’t beat a family day out at the beach. My childhood memories are full of sandcastles, donkey rides and ice cream by the sea. Old fashioned seaside towns in England are still as popular as ever. Millions of tourists visit Blackpool each year to enjoy the promenade, pleasure beach and sugary sticks of rock. Picnics on the beach are just as popular in Kuwait where, unlike England, sunshine is guaranteed! Cricket – Nothing is more English than a game of cricket on the village green. This scene is depicted in many films and television series and is instantly recognizable as being set in England. Cricket is one thing you will always see enjoyed in Kuwait. Football – Soccer is a huge pastime in England. Whether playing it or watching it, millions enjoy this famous sport. The English Premier League is one of the best in the world and is home to Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea (and my personal favourite Tottenham Hotspur!). These clubs have shirts for sale in most Kuwaiti sports shops and the matches are screened live on TV. It is also played by hundreds across the country including, of course, the Kuwait National team. Let’s do something English on the 23rd - Happy St. George’s Day everyone!

HOW WELL DO YOU

SLEEP?

Paul Tunbridge A professional Facilities Manager from England, and with work experience across mainland Europe before arriving in Kuwait in 2007 Paul's interests include architecture and gardening as well as creative writing and the arts in general.

I’d never really given much thought to my sleep patterns until some years ago, when I was gently told how much (and how loudly) I snored. I guess the words ‘until you stop snoring I shall be sleeping in another room’ were enough to prompt me to visit my doctor and seek help. A night spent in the local hospital, wired up with about 30 electrodes to some sort of box that recorded my breathing and sleeping patterns, revealed that my own sleep was disturbed by the volume of my snoring and inconsistency of breath intake (or something along those lines). A few weeks later I emerged from surgery in which an obstruction was removed from my throat. After a week of intensive ice cream diet therapy, I was back to normal and talking again and realized that the snoring had subsided and I was sleeping relatively undisturbed. In retrospect, I wonder if the medical action wasn’t perhaps a little extreme and unnecessary although it clearly assisted in decreasing my levels of snoring. But I have since discovered other ways to improve my chances of a good night’s sleep which I’m happy to citypageskuwait.com

pass on to others. I have a tendency to eat my main daily meal far too late into the evening. This leaves no time to burn off the calories after eating and is surely bad for my diet and the ability to lose the padding around my six-pack. But worse than that, I tend to snack between dinner and going to bed. I know the theory but struggle with the execution! I’m sure you know what I mean but let me highlight some of the Worst Snacks You Might Be Tempted to Eat Before Going to Bed. Cakes and Cookies Eating cakes and cookies late at night spikes your sugar, creating an intense hunger in the morning. Chocolate chip cookies are another late night no-no because they are loaded with fat, calories and sugar. The sugar and caffeine from the chocolate will make you feel hyper making it that much harder to get a good night’s sleep. Chocolate Chocolate anything!! As much as I love it, there is caffeine in chocolate (even the good kind - dark

chocolate 70% cacao or more). If you are sensitive to caffeine, this can disrupt your sleep. Gelato or Sorbet Marketing for gelato and sorbet is so innocent, encouraging you to choose them instead of a tub of ice cream, when in fact you’re getting comparably more fat content and the same quantity of sugar. This isn’t good, because you and I are usually in denial about the fact that these ice cream alternatives are just as unhealthy. Hazelnut Spread Nothing sparks weight gain like high fat with high sugar and hazelnut spreads have a two tablespoons serving size equal to (if not higher than, depending on the brand) half a cup of ice cream! Ice Cream The amount of sugar in ice cream will spike insulin levels and your treat will be saved as fat instead of being burned off during the day. Dairy leaves you clogged and congested and having ice cream before going to bed only doubles the effects because the mucus has time to accumulate all night. Pasta Eating carbs at night wreaks havoc on insulin levels when we sleep. More importantly, insulin interferes with the release of human growth hormone (HGH). When we don't get enough HGH, we're slow to develop muscle

and we begin to show signs of ageing much faster! Pretzels and Chips These are salt-laden refined snacks, so having them at night results in bloating and puffiness in the morning. The sodium makes the body retain water resulting in swelling in the face and abdomen and other extremities.

So What Is The Secret to Sweet Dreams? Dreams - they can either leave you feeling happy or discontented, especially when you realise what you thought was real was actually all in your head. When you have a good dream you immediately feel more uplifted in the morning and good dreams can actually increase your productivity as well. But how should you go about making sure your visions are positive? The first tip is to train your stomach and brain in the lead up to bed time. If your tummy is full and your mind relaxed, the more of a deep sleep you'll get. Let me recap what I’ve just written, but in summary form: I recommend you should limit your caffeine consumption or any sugary foods which will stimulate your senses. Drinking coffee even six hours before you go to sleep can affect your snooze patterns and, as a result, may even lead to nightmares. There are also links to spicy foods and products high in fat causing bad dreams. If you eat late at night your body is still

working to digest and process the food, such that it can't fully shut down into sleeping and dreaming mode. So eat well and you'll hopefully have some pleasant thoughts during shut-eye. Having space around you is also something which will contribute to you having pleasant dreams. Small things such as lighting a candle and keeping your room clear of clutter, or even adding a bunch of flowers to your windowsill can make a world of difference – but make sure you blow the candle out before you go to sleep! Also, something as simple as noting down your thoughts before bed can help unload any negativity so you don't take them to sleep with you. If you’ve had a bad day, allowed things to bother you and didn’t manage your stress well, your dreams that night may reflect it. Suppressing unwanted emotions and thoughts can increase similar activity in your dreams, causing them to be full of stress. Why not get all your thoughts and worries out of your psyche and onto paper? Before you close your journal, write down what you would like to accomplish tomorrow and if you have a request for your dreaming mind, write that down too. It can be anything from Brad Pitt to getting along better with your mother-in-law! Lastly, apps which lead you into a deep slumber could also be beneficial. Try experimenting with several methods and see which comes out best. You'll be having sweet dreams in no time!

PETROL HEADS

Peregrine Spode

Dentally challenged. Still single.

Hello everybody. I’m back with you again. I’ve heard a very distressing rumor that some people, who shall of course be nameless, but His Excellency the Editor-in-Chief knows who you are, have been making rather nasty references to me as being a little bit like Mr Bean. Apart from the absurdity of such an allegation, I want to make it transparently and abundantly clear that the gentleman and I have absolutely nothing at all in common. He certainly doesn’t get his clothes from the 360, that’s for sure. I’m not going to go into details, but it should be clear that if a man drives around in a 1970’s Mini with citypageskuwait.com

its transversely mounted 0.848 litre engine generating 34 brake horse power and with front wheel drive, he’s hardly a force to be reckoned with and he’s certainly no petrolhead. I myself, on the other hand, have been known to get behind the wheel of something a little bit more muscular. Exotic, even. No, not a Fiat or a Toyota, admirable as they doubtless are, but…well, I might tell you later because old Perry rather fancies himself as a master of the racetrack, a sort of dentally challenged Lewis Hamilton. It’s rather ironic that the alter ego of Mr Bean, Rowan Atkinson – whom I once saw in standup in London years ago and certainly long before Mr Bean – is a bit of a petrol-head

himself. In January of this year, the following advertisement appeared: For sale: one beautiful, plum-colored McLaren F1. One owner. Mostly just driven to the shops (yeah, right! Ed). Nearly destroyed only twice, but repaired to perfect condition by the factory. 66,000km, more or less. Not included: the adoration and love afforded to its original owner, Rowan Atkinson, by the world automotive community. And it's up for a fire-sale price, too, just £8,000,000, or a whisker under twelve million US dollars at current exchange rates.

planet who haven’t seen at least one episode. Apart from people driving insanely quickly in improbable locations, part of the fun is to get celebrities to drive around an old airfield circuit in a “reasonably priced small car”, in his case, the Kia Cee’d. He did a blistering time, only to be beaten by Matt LeBlanc, formerly of ‘Friends’, later in the series. Helped, one supposes, by the fact that Rowan has done a bit of racing in his time – his spectacular crash at Goodwood last September wasn’t his fault. Perhaps Mr Bean and I do have something in common. Ice cool nerves, calm under pressure, that sort of thing. Except, of course when visiting the Dentist, which for old Perry might as well be the Seventh Circle of Hell.

Which is about the same as a quite respectably acred property in the Hamptons would set you back. Yes, it's true. Rowan Atkinson is selling the McLaren. He's had it since it was new in 1997 and in that time he's put in a staggering amount of daily driving for a supercar, but he's also had his share of wee mishaps in it. First, there was the time he rather carelessly drove into the back of a Rover in 1999, and then in 2011 when he lost control in the wet and wrapped it around a tree, leaving the car in flames, the rear engine twenty metres away and he with a broken shoulder. Now, we won’t ask how fast he might have been going at the time, but the total cost of the repair was a smooth 1.4 million dollars paid out by his insurance company, on record as being the most expensive automotive claim in history. The car, or what was left of it, had to spend a whole year in the repair shop. His subsequent premiums are larger than most people’s salaries. But while we can all sit here and snigger because he smashed it up, something we super-amazing drivers would definitely never ever do, the real heart of the matter is that Mr Atkinson, or Bean, drove the F1 how, as he put it, it should be driven. That is to say, apparently, he drove it everywhere, from the cinema to the supermarket. It was never a trailer queen, only being trotted out for the occasional Concours d'Elegance. It was perfection, and as such, its perfection was meant to be enjoyed on a regular basis. And that was the best part of it, as he told a London newspaper: "What I enjoyed most about it when I first drove it was how lovely it was to drive slowly. Or, at normal road speeds, I suppose, (Ed). Of course, I've gone to a track and done 320km/h in it, but for me it was always the vision of its designer Gordon Murray that made the F1 unique.”

"Look at a modern supercar of comparable performance and it will be vast, heavy and offer little or no space for your luggage. By comparison, the F1 is tiny, yet it will seat three, store enough for you all to go on holiday and still finds space for a proper, normally aspirated 6.1-litre V12 engine. And it weighs the same as a shopping car. Nothing has ever been designed before or since with such imagination and clarity of thought." On the whole, you get the impression that he quite liked the vehicle. And sure, he paid well over six hundred thousand pounds for it when it was new, but now that which was once merely extraordinarily expensive has now become astronomically so, it's time for him to move on: "It was never bought as an investment," he says. "I bought it for the quality of the thinking that went into its design, and now it has become a thing of value, it is time for it to be enjoyed by someone else.” Now, before you all start salivating and reaching for the check book, screaming at me, personally, to just get to the point already and tell you all about where it is and who's doing the brokering and all that, because you want to buy it… Well, it might still be out there; the Internet’s a marvellously comprehensive source of information, but, do be advised. V12’s generate rather a lot of heat and if you’ve paid all that money for it, the last thing you need is for it to burst into flames somewhere on the Fifth Ring because the engine got a bit too warm. As Mr Bean’s alter ego, the remarkably urbane Oxford graduate once appeared on ‘Top Gear’. There can’t be very many people on the

As we speak, of course, the iconic TV series is teetering on the cusp of possible change. When you read this, it’ll be old news, but it’s been fun to follow events in real time. Just to remind you, on or about Saint Patrick’s Day, the flamboyant Jeremy Clarkson is scheduled to be carpeted by the BBC for allegedly making a racist remark to a young Irish producer, following up with ‘a bit of pushing and shoving’ to the discomfiture of co-presenters and members of the public in an upmarket hotel in the North of England. All because, apparently, the chef had gone home and there wasn’t any hot food. In a characteristic fit of political rectitude, the BBC pulled the Sunday programme and replaced the top-rated show with a repeat of a programme about the Red Arrows, an aerobatics team, presumably in the hope of soothing the petrol-heads with another kind of big, fast machine. Viewing figures plummeted by almost 75%. Which only goes to show, of course, that we love fantasising about outrageously expensive and obscenely powerful cars that most of us haven’t the wraith of a chance of ever sitting in, much less owning one and driving around in it to the appreciatively open-mouthed envy of the public. But, I keep forgetting. This is Kuwait and there are more Ferraris and high-end Porsches per kilometre of road than almost anywhere else on the planet. When a young relative briefly visited me I had to carry a handkerchief in order to wipe the drool from his permanently open mouth. All of which brings me to my final remarks. No doubt you will be holding your breath by now. What does Spode drive? Is it something whisper-quiet, urbane and sophisticated, with paddle shift and Connolly leather? Well, no. Is it a beast of an off-roader with exhausts the size of basketballs, get-the-hell-outta-my-way tires, finished in canary yellow? Not exactly. Perhaps it’s a kit car – a replica 1956 Porsche 356 A Speedster cabriolet with a traditional 2.1 litre air cooled engine, high performance suspension and authentic badging. D’you know – I’m not going to tell you. A chap has to have a few secrets, after all. See you next time. April, 2015

THE IRANIAN MARKET

A Hidden Gem Gill Sherry

As we all know, Kuwait is not short of places to shop. Whether you want food, clothes, jewellery or furniture, the choice of shops is endless. But there are alternatives to the big chain stores. The so called ‘Friday Market’ for example, is a firm favourite with both locals and ex-pats alike. Here, you can buy anything from a mirror to a mattress and from a waste bin to a wardrobe. Despite its misleading title, the market is also open on a Saturday and continues to attract hundreds of shoppers searching for a bargain. You can even have your items delivered to your home the same day. Most people in Kuwait are aware of the Friday Market. Even if they haven’t shopped there (or admitted to having shopped there!) they certainly know where to find it. But can the same be said of the Iranian market? I had lived in Kuwait for almost a year before I learned of its existence and couldn’t believe I had missed the opportunity to browse through its treasures on so many citypageskuwait.com

occasions. Again, the choice of items is vast but the best thing about these goods is their individuality. The Iranian market is full of unique furniture and furnishings just waiting to be found. Of course there are some duplicated items but if you know what you’re looking for, chances are you’ll find it. After browsing, bartering and eventually buying, I found myself reluctant to leave this charming market place. But my disappointment was short lived as I stumbled across another alleyway enticing me through to yet more undiscovered riches. The place was magical; full of vibrant colours, sparkling fabrics and gracious vendors. I feasted on the spectacle and wished, not for the first time, I’d discovered it sooner.

One lady who has taken advantage of this treasure trove on more than one occasion is Debra Preece. Debra moved to Kuwait from the UK three years ago. Determined her home should be befitting of her surroundings, she avoided the more obvious stores and went off in search of something different. Debra wanted her home to open its doors and embrace its visitors with a typical Kuwaiti welcome. She didn’t just want comfort; she wanted colour, warmth and style. But how could she achieve the opulence she craved without the princely price tag? Debra’s search took her to the Iranian market where she scoured the stalls for authentic items in keeping with her Middle Eastern home; and she wasn’t disappointed. With an eye for detail and the ability to barter, she was able to purchase an assemblage of goods to achieve the look she desired. The result is stunning; a beautiful home that’s as stylish as it is homely. With her natural flare for interior design, she has created

an exquisite living space full of Arabian charm. Debra is modestly proud of her home (and rightly so) but she is also praiseful of the Iranian Market and has no qualms recommending it to others. “It’s not about buying cheap goods” she says, “it’s about finding quality items at a reasonable price. Why spend a fortune when you don’t need to?” Her favourite market purchases include tables, chairs, beds, dressers, light fittings and sofas, plus a beautiful Chaise Longue perfect for relaxing with a good book. Her eye for a bargain also extends to clothes, finding genuine labels away from the malls - so it’s not just her home that looks good! April, 2015

THE JOY OF YOGA Celebrities who practice what they preach

Fred Allen When Jennifer Aniston gifted Oprah Winfrey a yoga mat in 2011 in front of millions of TV viewers, it signalled the growing fascination for the esoteric Indian discipline that harmonises mind, body and breath. Not only have yoga classes become the hottest fitness trend since pilates, but Madonna, Sting, Matthew McConaughey, Gisele B端ndchen and other celebrities have helped turn what used to be a cultish pursuit into a mainstream mind-body regimen, now followed by millions of people around the world. Adam Levine, the Maroon 5 frontman and judge on The Voice (equally famous for his handsome features and perfectly sculpted body) evinces an almost religious fervour when it comes to yoga. At every concert he plays, a backstage room is reserved for him with the sign "Yoga" posted on the door where he spends a half hour indulging in his "private obsession" before taking the stage. Levine explains that Yoga "anchors" him and "frees" his mind and body.

citypageskuwait.com

"I have a hard time sitting still," Levine says. " Yoga has given me the ability to be more focused and make better decisions that come from a clear place." "It calms and focuses me...There's nothing to win in yoga. You just do what you can do, one day to the next...It's made me more successful. I love it and don't know what I'd do without it." Though the public perception of yoga is that of people twisting their bodies like pretzels and striking odd poses, those who engage in the discipline will argue that its benefits go far beyond mere physical elements. Yoga, derived from the Sanskrit word "yuj," which means to unite or integrate, is a 5000 year old Indian spiritual and physical practice that seeks to harmonise mind, body and breath. Its most ardent disciples speak of the meditative and spiritual "high" that often accompanies the ritual body positions and extensions. Levine is hardly a lone apostle. Celebrity yoga

practitioners are true believers in the calming and healing effects that daily sessions afford them. The crushing burden of fame and constant media scrutiny has long wreaked havoc in the private lives of movie stars and pop artists who often seek relief in drug and alcohol abuse. It's against this backdrop that yoga is seen as welcome relief to that chaos by providing a form of inner peace that is otherwise so elusive. Robert Downey Jr. credits yoga as well as the martial arts for helping him slay the demons of heroin addiction and having "healed my spirit." Similarly, Colin Farrell turned to yoga after a decade-long alcohol and cocaine bender and found "this strange sense of calm after spending so much time running in different directions and not knowing why." Aside from the spiritual benefits, yoga addresses basic physical issues of flexibility, muscular tone, and body sculpting. In addition, actress Michelle Williams as well as supermodel Michelle Williams have both been outspoken about the benefits of yoga for expectant mothers and how it helps the body recover its former shape. Celebrities also appreciate the fact that they can do yoga in hotel rooms or in their trailers while working on films or in the midst of lengthy concert tours. Madonna has even taken to doing yoga in the aisle of airplanes - not that the average person would be so easily indulged by flight crews. Accordingly, we have selected some top celebrity devotees of the ancient art and sought to uncover how and why yoga has become an essential part of their lives.

1.GISELE BÜNDCHEN (Anusara and prenatal yoga) Perhaps it's unfair to cite a 5'11" Brazilian supermodel as an ideal yoga practioner, but Gisele Bündchen would tell you that she didn't

retain her perfect figure by lying on the beach. Before and after the births of each of her two children, Benjamin and Vivian, Bündchen relied on yoga to maintain her flexibility and help restore her slender frame back to Voguelike perfection. Yoga is part of her way of maintaining an extraordinary body that helps her earn a reported $47 million per year from a variety of endorsement campaigns including that for Chanel No 5 fragrance. She does a minimum of three yoga sessions per week and has often been photographed in parks or seen in instagrammed selfies where she strikes a variety of yoga positions. "I enjoy yoga... but I don't do Asanas (yoga poses) all the time" Bündchen said. "Sometimes I just do mantras because yoga for me is a philosophy, it's another tool to help you go inward, because my whole mission in life is to keep going inward. The world always takes you out here and my focus, whatever it is I'm doing, is to have tools to bring me back inward." "I try to do at least 15 minutes of yoga three or four times a week. I also like to do Kung Fu, Pilates, surfing, and go horseback riding, but yoga has a meditative and calming aspect that is very unique. You enter your own little world when you're really into it, and afterwards you feel very refreshed."

2.MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY (Bikram yoga) In an interview with GQ magazine, the 44-year-old said: "I am vain. I think vanity is a good thing. It’s done more good things for me than it has not." McConaughey grew up in Texas where 35 Celsius days are often the norm in the summer and temperatures can soar even higher. That's one of the reasons that drew him to Bikram yoga which is generally practiced indoors in rooms where the temperature is 35 C or higher and where sessions last 90 minutes. Developed in the early '70s by Bikram Choudhury, Bikram yoga is defined by the specific 26 poses or postures which are intended to tone muscles, stretch the skeleton, and create the special kind of "high" that its practitioners cite as one of the added benefits of this discipline. McConaughey, however, prefers to practice yoga - bikram and other forms - outdoors whenever possible. Explained the Oscar-winning actor: "Yoga gives me a feeling of flexibility as well as strength - it adds to the feeling of well-being I get from running and doing crunches and push-ups. It's also gives you great muscle tone that you don't get from other kinds of exercise and where you feel like you're floating in your own private space." "(Yoga and other forms of physical training) have always been a lifestyle. Then it became something that was like, ‘Hey, it’s also good for my job.’ I’m not a professional athlete, but I have a job where I like to look good and be as healthy as possible."

point where at age 46 she has the kind of body most women in their early 30s - or any age, for that matter - would envy. She even says that her exquisite legs are the result of years of dedicated yoga practice: "I always hated my legs - that was always my 'ugh', my legs. That's why I credit Mandy for having sculpted them with yoga."

4. STING (Vinyasa flow yoga)

3.JENNIFER ANISTON (Hatha yoga) Long known for her fabulous figure, Jennifer Aniston was introduced to yoga twenty years ago by renown yoga instructor Mandy Ingber who is also one of her closest friends. Aniston does a minimum of 5 yoga sessions per week and follows a programme outlined by Ingber in her 2013 book, "Yogalosophy: 28 Days to the Ultimate Mind-Body Makeover." "Mandy introduced me to yoga... It completely changed my life." said Aniston. "Yoga kind of helps you prepare for everything. It's like meditation. It sort of just allows anything that's coming at you at the end of the day to be kind of doable." "Yoga strengthens my muscles and gives me a great sense of peace and calm. It also improves my breathing and centres me. I usually follow yoga with about 40 minutes of cardio – hiking, running or at the gym." When she starred in the film "We're the Millers" Aniston relied on Ingwer's yoga and fitness programme to help her look the part "I've never had a better body than when I prepared for that film" Aniston admitted. She credits yoga for the kind of mental discipline that enabled her to quit smoking as well as having taught her how to stay calm during difficult personal crises such as her divorce from Brad Pitt. She also cites yoga as giving her "a better feeling of balance - when you're worried that your world is falling apart, yoga helps clear away that kind of anxiety." Aniston also credits her yoga for having enabled her to develop and maintain her finely toned physique to the

citypageskuwait.com

Sting has long been one of yoga's greatest advocates. In his particular case, yoga has helped bring him closer to his wife, Trudie Styler, with whom he has spent over three decades. Sting enjoys practicing yoga together with Styler, and these sessions have created an added level of closeness and shared spiritual awareness. Said Sting: "Marriages often fail because once people sign the contract, they say, 'That's it.' A relationship is a living, breathing organism. It needs to be nourished. It also needs to evolve, to be adjusted; you need compromise and flexibility." "Yoga helps add to your level of physical intimacy that.... grows as you get to know someone better. And it takes years to get to know someone, really. But you're rewarded for your diligence." During his 2010 Symphonicities tour which was an orchestral reworking of his solo as well as Police songs, Sting would spend 40 minutes leading the string section of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra which accompanied him on the tour in yoga sessions which included chants and meditations. "Yoga has enriched my life by allowing me to improve physically; which is very inspiring, especially as you get older. I tour an awful lot, and being on the road is not always easy... Yoga is a great way to offset the downsides of touring by bringing much-needed peace and sanity into what can be a hectic life. Like music, yoga is a journey -- one that is long enough so you keep developing, and keep learning. I don't see an end to it." The 62 year-old Sting believes that yoga allows him to "do the job of a 25-year-old. I perform on stage in much the same way I did when I was in my 20s or teens, and I’m doing it just as efficiently. And I put that down to yoga. Two decades of yoga has given me two extra decades of this career. I wouldn’t be able to do it if I was out of shape."

5. MICHELLE WILLIAMS (Ashtanga yoga)

Michelle Williams, star of such films as "Brokeback Mountain," "Blue Valentine," and "My Week with Marilyn," is a strong believer in the healing power of yoga. She feels that yoga was vital to helping her deal with the death of her ex-boyfriend, (actor Heath Ledger and father to their daughter Matilda) who died of an accidental overdose in January, 2008. The 34-year-old Williams was so grateful for the benefits of yoga that she was inspired to cofound The Yoga for Single Moms Project which launched in 2011 Boston, Massachusetts. Declared Williams: "Yoga gave me relief like nothing else; it made be a better person and a better mother. I could come back to my daughter anew. And then I started to think about how expensive it is to get a babysitter to take a yoga class, which makes it out of reach for so many women." "The idea behind the program is that if you can clear the time, we do the rest. It provides childcare while the mum is in the yoga class, and it's all free." Williams is also adamant about how her yoga practice energises her so that she can enjoy a better relationship with her 9 year-old daughter, Matilda. "I love yoga for how it relaxes me and gives me more energy so that I can be happier and more available to my daughter. Even after being on the set all day I like coming home and spending time with her, cooking dinner and being very involved in her life."

6. MADONNA (Ashtanga yoga)

Madonna has long been one of the leading

Said Madonna: "I started doing yoga again, which I haven't done in years and years and years. I'm so used to exercising with music playing very loud, and when you do yoga, you're just listening to your breath." Her new-found embrace of Ashtanga yoga is even reflected in her recent music. Madonna recited the opening Ashtanga chant on her Ray-of-Light album and even played an Ashtanga teacher in the movie The Next Best Thing. The mother of four now combines yoga with her almost daily cardio-driven workout sessions and at age 56 she has the toned body of a twenty-something athlete. Added Madonna: "There is no easy way. If you want to know how I look like I do, it's diet and exercise and constantly being careful."

7. ROBERT DOWNEY JR. (Ashtanga and other forms of yoga) Together with his devotion to Wing Chun Kung Fu, a Chinese martial art form whose most famous advocate was Bruce Lee, Robert Downey Jr. has found yoga to be most effective as a mind mastering technique. "All the battles are in your head," Downey Jr. explained. "When you are able to master those contradictory impulses, then you're no longer going to fear those demons that want to drag you back to hell." "Yoga is a kind of meditation for me, you get this strange sense of calmness even when you're putting your body through some very difficult and testing trials." A few years ago Downey Jr. even appeared on the cover of Men's Health magazine going through a pose with his personal yoga instructor, Vinnie Marino. Marino is part of what has come to be called Team Downey, a large coterie that includes yogis, massage therapists, martial-arts instructors, and his

beloved wife Susan, a major Hollywood film producer who has brought him happiness as well as two young children. Said Downey: "She has been responsible for giving me a foundation to lead a good life and to be able to enjoy everything that comes with being a husband and father.... I know when I'm not doing enough and I also know when I'm stressing myself out trying to do more than I'm really capable of doing. When Susan sees I'm in that kind of state, she just kind of looks at me and says, "You know, why don't you go to the gym or something?" Yoga is often what RDJr turns to when he feels stressed: "It's different from doing martial arts - you're seeking peace of mind and trying to find harmony between mind and body. You don't necessarily get that with other types of training." Downey Jr.'s favourite positions are the warrior, bow, and lotus poses and he is fond of speaking about "the incredible tension you feel when you push your body to the limit and then it gradually becomes natural and relaxing." Having overcome his terrible addictions to heroin and other drugs, RDJr has been clean and living healthily for well over a decade and he has no desire ever to return to those dark days. Said Downey Jr: "Job one is get out of that cave. A lot of people do get out but don’t change. So the thing is to get out and recognize the significance of that aggressive denial of your fate..." "Who would have ever expected me to be settled down, make big Hollywood blockbusters, married with two young children, and living this happily?"

celebrity workout fanatics. For three decades, she has maintained a supremely toned and trained body that is the result of intense, two-hour workout sessions that she often follows five days a week. She has famously declared: "Yoga is a metaphor for life. You have to take it really slowly. You can’t rush. You can’t skip the next position. You find yourself in very humiliating situations, but you can’t judge yourself. You just have to breathe, and let go. It is a workout for your mind, your body and your soul." Two years ago, the pop icon started doing yoga again and touts the calming and meditative benefits of 30-minute sessions. April, 2015

I DON'T KNOW YOU; YOU DON'T KNOW ME;

LET'S STRIKE UP A CONVERSATION!

Paul Tunbridge A professional Facilities Manager from England, and with work experience across mainland Europe before arriving in Kuwait in 2007 Paul's interests include architecture and gardening as well as creative writing and the arts in general.

My mother, for as long as I can remember, has had an amazing capacity for talking to people – to anyone, about anything, and for any given amount of time. I guess she could be described as a natural flirt, and in some ways I think that may have rubbed off on to me. But in truth, she simply likes to be friendly and sociable and has so many interesting stories that others never tire of hearing! In my school days it used to be a family joke that it would take mum a whole day to do the weekly shop, because she kept stopping to chat to friends she met on the way – she is now 90 years old and very little has changed in that regard (except that she has collected a lot more friends!). Do you know someone who can just start a conversation with anybody, anywhere, any time? With no freezing up, no nervous stammering, no opening their mouth and saying completely the wrong thing...? In these days of Online Dating, it has become easier to meet others and chat to them in a safe and distant environment and I had expected that the days of cheesy chat-up lines had long passed. But I was wrong. Whilst not appropriate in Kuwait society, according to a recent survey carried out in the UK, the art of the chat-up line is not yet dead. The survey findings suggested that women like a guy with a good sense of humour; and a good chat-up line can be a great way of displaying this trait. Researchers also revealed the chat-up lines men rely on to get the attention of the girl. ‘Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?’ came out on top. Second place went to ‘Apart from

citypageskuwait.com

being beautiful, what do you do for a living?’ followed by ‘Shall we talk or continue flirting from a distance? ’Other classic lines to feature in the poll include, ‘Did it hurt when you fell out of heaven?’ and ‘I seem to have lost my number, can I have yours instead?’ The truth is though, that even in a society where such bold yet lighthearted approaches are acceptable, it takes a brave and confident guy to consider opening a conversation in such a way; and herein lies a clue. Making conversation with close friends and family is easy. But what about at dinner parties, on first dates, or at new jobs, when you barely know the person you're speaking to? I used to find those situations difficult, until I looked closer to home for some inspiration. Think about this …A relaxed brain is a creative brain. So when you're not feeling nervous, making small talk is so much easier and spontaneous. When you relax, your words flow more easily and you stop worrying so much about what other people think of you. Think about a work situation. If you know the subject about which you are talking, that knowledge will give you confidence, and if you have confidence in the subject you will be more relaxed talking about it. Like everything, starting and maintaining conversation is a habit that gets better and better with practice. So it turns out that being good at starting a conversation is just a 'virtuous circle'. The more you relax, the more practice you get; and the more practice you get the easier it becomes.

MILs FACT SHEET

SURVIVE YOUR MOTHER IN LAW Mothers- in-Law!! Where do I start? I will start by putting ‘good’ Mothers-in-Law aside (this is a closed club where members are the wives mothers only). Now off to the other types of MILs with their fixed personalities and attitudes towards ‘the-girl-who-took-my-son-away-from-me’ in- law’. Here are the 3 main types of MILs from my point of view.

The Silent Meddler

The truth is, she doesn’t and never will have the intention to teach you anything or to make you look better. On the contrary, it makes her day when you fail, when you look bad, when you simply prove to everyone that you can never be as good as her.

Just like kids no longer enjoy playing outdoors and just like 55 kg is no longer perceived as a perfect weight. MILs no longer meddle out loud.

The Molder The exact opposite of the “MIL on a Mission”. This Molder manages you like a little project until you are in the most appropriate shape. She will treat you like a baby, teach you how to walk right (her way), talk right (her way), dress right (her way), cook right (her way), clean right (her way), bring up your children right (herrr waaay)… you see where I am going with that.

Sherihan A. Hassabo Sherihan A. Hassabo is a passionate writer who started expressing her opinion about controversial subjects when she was 14. When she is not directing events, she likes to investigate the interesting relationships' controversy in our Eastern society. Every month, and from real life experience; Sherihan will share a story, an idea, opinion, or a simple advice for men and women to live happily ever after.

We all learn from our mistakes and MILs learned not to speak their minds out loud because it simply backfires. Do they stop meddling all together? Of course not; they wouldn’t survive such trauma. Nowadays, they just meddle ‘silently’. The silent meddler is a keen observer of what you do and what you say without ever commenting. Just like a hawk, she would watch you from a far distance then decide when to fly down to the ground and attack! Apparently, the former ‘Meddlers’ have realized that they are super see-though. They then came up with a plan to meddle as much as they want but in the right time and of course ‘unintentionally’… or so they make it seem!

The one on a Mission This MIL has only one mission to accomplish; and this is to win the battle against you and regain her “A” role in her son’s life. How? She would do anything just to call her mission “accomplished”. The Mission: Prove superiority Mission Starts: On day of the engagement Mission ends: Only when fully completed Tools: Constant demeaning of the enemy (the wife) This MIL is on a mission to prove to her son that no-one can ever replace her in his life. She starts off with simple things like: “I taught her how to make you your favorite dish so I don’t know why you still want to eat it from my hands” citypageskuwait.com

For her, this is the only way you can ever get her blessing and be declared worthy of her son.

With these different types and the many others derived from them, the reason mothers-in-law are mostly mean to the daughters-in-law will forever remain the same. Any mother-in-law is originally a mother who raises her son for years, taking care of his each and every need. The fact that one day he steps away, asks another woman when he is hungry or when he is looking for clean socks, simply makes the MIL feel useless. It is not a justification for all their later doings, but at least when we think of the reason, we know where it all began. There are millions of guides to tease MILs but I wouldn’t say there is a guide to deal with each type of MIL. Howerver, the one rule to deal with all types is: Keep her in the picture. Make her feel needed. Make her feel involved. Don’t make her feel that her role has ended.. And always ask yourself: Would I stand this feeling?

WET BOBS AND LAUGHTER

John McArthur John MacArthur was born in England, but has Celtic ancestry, so loves to sing. Abandoning his choral training, he sings songs of love and loss, owning several antique acoustic guitars. He has degrees in physics, chemistry and mathematics, has studied theology and business management, so, in fine nomadic tradition, he can call several universities home. After seven years in Kuwait, he 'retired' and laughs at himself every morning, commuting between his Paris island home and country house in rural France where he lives with his wife, a food writer and stylist, and, perhaps soon, a dog, should he be allowed one. Much to her dismay, he is thinking of taking up the mandolin. He has written for various publications worldwide on whatever happens to catch his imagination.

Ladies, listen up. There's a new hair trend. It has a very uncool name but, apparently, it's a very hot look. And it’s everywhere. At the Vanity Fair party after this year's Oscars, actress Malin Akerman showed up on the red carpet looking as if she’d plunged her blonde locks in a bucket of water. At the Bulgari party, Camilla Belle paired her black and white Prabal Gurung dress with glistening shoulder-length hair. It’s called the “wob,” or wetbob, and it was perfected by Beyoncé during her slick performance of “Drunk in Love” at this year's Grammy Awards. Then, Miley Cyrus - who else - appeared sultrily blonde and bedraggled on the March cover of W magazine. And the aptly named model Arizona Muse has perfected the wob for editorial spreads in international editions of Vogue. Which is all very exciting if you're a twentysomething girl-about-town who absolutely must follow the latest trend in hair care. Nineteen British Prime Ministers including the present one were educated at Eton College. In the vernacular of the school, a wet-bob is a boy who goes in for boating,

citypageskuwait.com

but a dry-bob is one who opts for cricket and other sports where drowning is not part of the adventure. For a sport which the College once banned as being too dangerous on the crowded Thames waterway, Eton wet-bobs have provided more than their fair share of Boat Race competitors, including Olympians like Matthew Pinsent, Ed Coode and Andrew Lindsay, a three-time Oxford Blue. One of London's oldest sporting events, first raced in 1829, The Boat Race is a feature of April's cultural and sporting landscape as England's two elite universities take to the water in a race on the flood tide. It’s always bitterly fought and highly partisan, racing between Putney Bridge and Mortlake, just short of Chiswick Bridge in the south west of the city, a distance just shy of seven kilometres. Thousands line the Thames each year to see Oxford Dark Blues battle against the Light Blue of Cambridge, who are currently in the lead, beating the Dark Blues only three more times since the race began. Eight huge men with Popeye forearms and perfectly sculpted bodies, plus a tiny cox to steer the boat, battle the often unpredictable wavelets and curves of Old Father Thames, which has seen more than one spectacular capsize in the history of the famous race. Interestingly,

David Cameron, a self-confessed dry-bob was once persuaded to cox for an Eton regatta, but he does seem to have rather outgrown the role in recent times, physically as well as metaphorically. Also Stephen Hawking, before his incapacity from ALS, coxed an Oxford team. For spectators, it's a lot of fun and still a free show from the many bridges - there's a great view - and some great watering holes around Furnivall Gardens on the north side of the Thames near Hammersmith Bridge. The race passes under the bridge just before the halfway point and crowds gather on it to get a good view of the halfway positions. Passing under the bridge, the coxes line the boats up with a particular lamppost that shows the deepest part of the river and therefore the fastest line. Hammersmith Bridge has suffered from structural problems for many years and has occasionally been closed to cars in the past, but its Grade II listed status ensures that its unique character will be preserved. Roman legions broke step when crossing bridges, so excessive jumping up and down with excitement is probably not a good idea as the old structure might very well be compromised by too much enthusiastic shifting of mass. Alternatively, people often congregate near the start at Putney Bridge where giant screens on both banks allow spectators to follow the action as the teams make their way around the first bend. Those lucky enough to have a view from nearby Putney Wharf Towers, where a small apartment can rent for over four thousand pounds a month, need only sit on their terrace and see almost everything. Nearby, at Bishop's Park- traditionally the summer home of the Bishop of London - behind the South Stand at Craven Cottage, (Fulham's football ground) there's usually fine food stalls, family attractions and the ubiquitous 'beer tent', while the banks of the river around Barnes are another popular spot. This year's Boat Race is a late starter at six in the evening; the reserve crew race "Isis v Goldie" is before the main event but the fun begins much earlier to stoke the excitement when the riverbank events will begin just after noon at Bishop's Park and Furnivall Gardens. Having fun in April is a very old custom indeed. The tradition of setting aside a day for the playing of harmless pranks upon one's neighbour is recognized everywhere, even before we called it by its modern name of April

initially a civil servant, before becoming a theologian and probably looked down on all kinds of merriment with a suitably austere, Aristotelian displeasure; however, he was sufficiently moved to write at length about it, usually disparagingly. He suggested that among the former or private hilaria, it might have been the day on which a person married, or on which a son was born; among the latter, those days of public rejoicings appointed by a new emperor where everybody had to be happy - or appear to be so - by law. Such days were devoted to general rejoicings and public sacrifices, and no one was allowed to show any symptoms of grief or sorrow. But the Romans also celebrated hilaria on the first day after the vernal equinox, or the first day of the year that was longer than the night. The winter with its gloom had died, and the first day of a better season was spent in rejoicings. Sounds quite a familiar idea? All kinds of games and amusements were allowed on this day; masquerades were the most prominent among them, and everyone might, in his disguise, imitate whomsoever he liked, and even magistrates, the guardians of public morality, were ridiculed by imitation.

Fools' Day, which, of course, is the first day of the month. It's always fun to remember one's schoolday past - I happen to have had a rich grounding in English literature so the following is familiar, although I did have to look up one or two details. In Chaucer's 1392 Canterbury Tales the 'Nun's Priests Tale' is set 'syn March bigan thritty dayes and two' Modern scholars believe that there is a copying error in the extant manuscripts and that Chaucer actually wrote syn March was gon. Thus the passage originally meant thirty-two days after March, or 2 May, which happened to be the anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia, which took place in 1381. Readers apparently misunderstood this line to mean "32 March", or 1 April. In Chaucer's tale, the vain cock Chauntecleer is tricked, or fooled, by a fox, perhaps an early reference to April Fools' Day. Precursors of April Fools' Day include the Roman festivals of Hilaria - we get the word 'hilarity' from it - the Holi festival from India, and the Medieval Feast of Fools, where the great and the good exchange places with the poor. Quasimodo, the grotesquely ugly Hunchback of Notre Dame was crowned King of Fools and was rescued by Esmeralda from the jeering and mockery of the crowds. In Roman times, "Hilaria" was a name given to any day or season of rejoicing. The hilaria were, according to Maximus the Confessor, either private or public. Maximus was

You might be asking yourselves - did he go to Eton? No, he didn't. He went to another ancient establishment founded by the grocer to Elizabeth the First and formative years were spent at the place where the football played by men with odd-shaped balls was invented. We had our own language and vernacular too. We were made to sing, or, as we called it "the House Shout"- ghastly as it might sound - in Latin. Imagine a hundred or so young male voices, untrained and, indeed, untrainable, bawling out the following: all ten stanzas. Mercifully, I'll only subject you to the first of them. Classical scholars will immediately recognise that I have taken a few serious liberties with the translation... "Gaudeamus igitur Iuvenes dum sumus. Gaudeamus igitur Iuvenes dum sumus. Post iucundam iuventutem. Post molestam senectutem. Nos habebit humus Nos habebit humus." Translated thus... "While we're young, let's therefore all rejoice, Singing out in gleeful tones; After the delights of youthful frolic, Then old age - so melancholic, Earth will cover our bones." We no longer use legislation as an excuse for "making merry". But, let's not forget that it's April and whether we're commanded to or not, it's the season for having rather a good time. Enjoy yourselves. April, 2015

When you have one of those days where everything is on high alert or you’re just feeling under the weather, color is here to help you. I am more careful with my colors on challenging days. These are my tricks to brace through a challenging day at work, home or even just a small argument with a friend or a family member.

2.Add a touch of Baby Blue

1.Choose your base: Black or White

3.You can Always Grey it out

Black is great when we are protecting. If you are the kind who chooses fight instead of flight black can give you wisdom and calm your aggression because black absorbs energy. If you are the flight instead of fight kind STAY AWAY from black and go for the opposite side of the spectrum with white. White reflects all light so if you are the sensitive type this color will protect you beautifully, making you less sensitive and less prone to others negativity.

Baby blue is the color of expression. Most of us feel stressed or sensitive because of our inability to express our feelings well during heated arguments or challenging times. Baby blue will help you achieve clear, gentle communication whilst also lowering your blood pressure. You are ready to win the vocal challenge with this blue.

If you are facing conflict or challenge, Heather Grey is your color. Grey is a neutralizing color that helps you balance the black or white of any situation and find a middle way that keeps everyone happy. It helps you create harmonious solutions so is best to wear when arguing with your partner or a family member! These are my tips for beating any challenging day no matter what! The Spa and Wellness industry is developing and growing rapidly. Many people are taking care of their health and wellbeing, paying attention to nutritional food and striving for a healthier lifestyle. In the past, many hotels and spas offered wellness packages but with no concern for the health of each individual guest or any evidence of precautionary measures. Today however, spas are offering a wide range of wellness treatments, tailor made for each client. Originally, the word ‘spa’ came from Latin phrases such as Solus per Aqua and Sanitas per Aquam, meaning health through water. This is why the use of water remains an important part of many spa treatments. There are now a wide range of wellness treatments available which focus on a guest’s individual needs and requirements: •Anti-aging therapy •Physiotherapy •Cosmetic and beauty treatments •Kneipp facilities, whirl pool & hot tubs •Sauna and steam baths •Experience shower •Reflexology

citypageskuwait.com

•Fitness and weight loss programs •Detox Programs •Lymph drainage treatments •Massages, body treatments •Hand and foot baths It is important to find time to maintain a high level of health and fitness and this includes relaxation. Keeping fit isn’t just about lifting weights or running on a treadmill; it’s about treating yourself and allowing your mind and body to feel good. Many people visit a spa not just for luxury but for wellness and peace of mind. At Six Senses Spa, we offer a wide range of holistic, wellness, rejuvenation and beauty treatments, all administered under the guidance of expert therapists. Whilst being part of the local fabric and culture, Six Senses Spa is also very much in tune with the wider world. I am proud to help them achieve their goals and to help them look and feel better about themselves.

Meghan Trainor Dreams in life are to get Grammys

Meghan Trainor from Nantucket, Massachusetts, released her inescapable debut single All About That Bass last summer. She chats about hits, heritage, and a penguin called Paddles.

YOU SIGNED YOUR RECORD DEAL JUST UNDER A YEAR AGO. SINCE THEN YOU'VE GONE FROM BEING UNKNOWN TO GRAMMY NOMINATED. Yes. Grammy nominated... that's me.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE FINDING OUT YOU WERE NOMINATED FOR TWO GRAMMYS? Epic. A person who makes music only dreams... Dreams in life are to get Grammys. I've done that and I'm just 21. To win it is a whole other game but just to be nominated, for the rest of my life, I'll be introduced as 'Grammy nominated Meghan Trainor'.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY YOUR HIGHLIGHT WAS OVER THE PAST YEAR? I just had a new one. My birthday was everything. I had an arena of 20,000 people sing Happy Birthday to me 'cause of Nick Jonas. I also just did Jimmy Fallon's chat show in the US and performed on it. Afterwards, Jimmy came to talk to me and my parents about how he just loved my album and wants to play it and I remember I was acting so cool, but once he turned around I was like, OH MY GOD! citypageskuwait.com

I used to be a total tomboy. I had two brothers and my mom never wore make-up so I learned nothing. She is 46, with a babyface, and still looks younger than me

Andy Welch / Press Association / The Interview People April, 2015

The preppy look was a big deal in Nantucket where I grew up. I never embraced it. I was always the girl dressed top-to-toe in black leather surrounded by people in white trousers.

BEYONCE SAYS SHE'S A FAN OF YOUR MUSIC Yeah, that was huge for me. And Michael Buble did a cover of All About That Bass on Instagram. I'm obsessed with him. One of my goals in life was to make sure Michael Buble knew I existed and then he sang my song.

DID YOU KNOW ALL ABOUT THAT BASS WAS GOING TO BE A HIT WHEN YOU WERE WRITING IT? As a songwriter, I went to my favourite songwriters and they said, 'How do you know you had a hit?' and I said, 'It's the ones you never guess, it's ones you never know'. With that song, I thought it was a cool song, whatever, but I didn't think anyone was gonna hear it. No other pop star could sing it 'cause they're all size zero and no one can rap and sing, so I had to sing it. And what you hear today is what the demo is. No autotune, no nothing, it's as it was when I walked out of the studio after recording it.

HAVE YOU HEARD IT WHILE YOU'RE OUT AND ABOUT? Yeah, it's weird. I remember the only time that I got really weirded out was when I was home on my island and I went to a sushi place. I walked in and Lips Are Movin' was playing and five minutes later All About That Bass played, and then Lips played again. I thought 'Damn I'm famous. Like, it's real'.

YOU'VE GOT A DUET WITH JOHN LEGEND ON YOUR ALBUM? Yeah and I produced it. I was very proud of myself. My management company manages him so I sent them the song with just my vocals on it and they played it for him without telling me and he said he would love to be a part of it.

YOU'RE COMING TO EUROPE TO TOUR. DO YOU LIKE IT HERE? Yes. I know my heritage. I'm Scottish. I'm Scottish and Polish. So I'm excited to go there, then I can say, 'I'm one of you'.

DO YOU BRING ANY HOME COMFORTS WITH YOU ON THE ROAD? I have a stuffed animal named Paddles that I got recently. It's a penguin. He's kinda famous on Instagram. I bring him everywhere. He's great. Also, my mum's jewellery, 'cause my mum can never come with me, but I love looking at them to remind me of her. citypageskuwait.com

I watched Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby five times, just for the beauty. Back in the 1920s they worked so hard to look that good, so when I take two hours to do my hair, I don’t feel as bad.

Frank Sinatra was my biggest style icon growing up. It’s weird that it was a dude, but I love how he always looked so dapper.

DIABETIC DETAILS & THE EYE

Natalie Rose Choonoo Natalie is an optometrist and contact lens specialist at International Optique. She has a Bachelor of Optometry from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal South Africa. For more information contact International Optique. Tel: 25714007 – 97234753, www. intoptic.com – info@intoptic.com, Instagram: @intoptique

Perhaps you have not been feeling ‘yourself’ lately - you have noticed unusual blurred vision which seems to vary during the day. Your spectacles/ contact lenses do not seem to be as clear as the previous day. Then there is the loss of weight even though your eating patterns have not changed. Likewise you are constantly thirsty, making you urinate frequently. As well, you have noticed wounds which don't heal as easily and a susceptibility to infections. Unfortunately, the above symptoms can be initial indicators of diabetes. According to a study by the Dasman Diabetic Institute in 2014, Kuwait is globally ranked as 9th, for the number of people between the ages of 2070 suffering from diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic disease which is characterized by high glucose levels (commonly known as ‘sukkar’ in Arabic). Diabetes can be summarized into three categories: •Type 1 (insulin dependent): This is an early onset of diabetes. It is the failure of the body's pancreas to produce insulin. This type of diabetes is genetic in origin. •Type 2 (non-insulin dependent): When the body is unable to utilize the insulin which the pancreas produces to manage blood sugar levels. It is also referred to as insulin resistance. An unhealthy lifestyle is the main contributory factor to this type of diabetes. •Gestational diabetes: Develops during pregnancy in the third trimester. This does not mean that you had diabetes prior to conception or will have it after delivery. One of the most common complications of diabetes is found within the eyes. It is actually one of the leading causes of blindness in the modern world today. These are the symptoms that you could experience: •Sudden changes in spectacle/contact lens prescriptions in a 3-6 month period of time. •Fluctuating vision i.e. seeing well one day but not the following day. The vision could change according to the time of day, hunger levels, ill health etc. •Double vision unrelated to any head injuries or neurological problems. •Difficulty with contrast of blue/yellow colors.

citypageskuwait.com

•Eye floaters (black spots which may appear as hairs in your field of view). •Near vision problems unrelated to age. The following are signs which are diagnosed by your ophthalmologist as perhaps a possibility of diabetic disease: early onset of cataract (a clouding of the lens of the eye), glaucoma (high pressure in the eye) and most importantly, diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy can be described as long term visual damage to the retina. The retina is a layer of cells that line the back of the eye ball in humans and animals. Its role is to sense light that enters the eye and to send that information to the brain. The retina is the origin of the optic nerve. This is a very important link in the visual pathway to sight. In diabetic retinopathy, the retina may swell and the formation of yellow unwanted deposits may occur. Leakage of blood vessels is also a common occurrence. When that happens there is always a possibility that these blood vessels can leak into the vitreous i.e. the jelly structure of the eye. That occurrence could lead to blindness. The most significant advice I can give to you if you are experiencing diabetic like symptoms as noted in the opening paragraph, is to make sure your condition is correctly diagnosed by a medical doctor. However, to our pre-existing diabetics here are a few ‘pearls of wisdom’ which need to be emphasized. •Be sure to take your medication as only recommended by your medical doctor. •Keep track of your own blood sugar levels and also monitor your blood pressure. •Do not smoke (this decreases the oxygen to the retina's blood supply & therefore changes the blood vessels). •Consult with an ophthalmologist for regular eye exams. The doctor will then advise you on how often your visits should be, depending on the severity of your diabetes. Remember, whether you are diabetic or not, maintain a healthy and balanced diet, including regular exercise. This will ensure your body is in good health and most importantly for me, that your vision and its well being are maintained!

WHAT IS IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS)?

Dr. Nazia Nausheen Dr. Nazia Nausheen is a certified medical doctor. She also holds a Masters Degree in Business, Specializing in Sales and Marketing. Readers should look forward to her regular articles on women health and other general health related issues.

Look around. Are the people around you (or maybe even you yourself) suffering in silence? Might someone you know or love be living with a chronic illness and not telling you for fear or embarrassment or lack of awareness associated with their symptoms? We all must unite to shine a light on this chronic disorder and help those suffering break their silence by educating ourselves.

What is IBS?

IBS is a disorder of the colon, also called the large intestine, although other parts of the intestinal tract -even up to the stomach - can be affected. When IBS occurs, the colon does not contract normally. Instead, it seems to contract in a disorganized, even violent manner. The contractions may be terribly exaggerated and last for prolonged periods of time. One area of the colon may contract with no regard to another. At other times, there may be little bowel activity at all. While certainly painful and sometimes embarrassing, IBS is not a disease; nor is it contagious or cancercausing. It is a functioning issue and usually presents before age 40 – sometimes as early as one’s teens.

What are the symptoms?

The most common symptoms of IBS are: •Abdominal pain •Diarrhea •Constipation •Bloating Some patients also produce large amounts of mucus in citypageskuwait.com

the stools, but this is not abnormal.

What are the causes? Certain foods including coffee, spices, some raw fruits/ vegetables and even milk can cause malfunction. In addition, infections, illnesses, weather changes and the premenstrual cycle in women can be associated with flare-ups. Perhaps the most interesting causes of symptoms, however, are not in the colon at all. They are in the brain. By far, the most common factor associated with symptoms of IBS is the interaction between the brain and colon. Virtually everyone has had some alteration in bowel function when under intense stress or in conflict. However, people with IBS seem to have an overly sensitive bowel and perhaps an overabundance of nerve impulses flowing.

Treatment options When specific foods are one’s trigger, complete avoidance is the simplest method to keep symptoms at bay. However, in most cases, patients need a complete diet overhaul – and sometimes medications – to ensure long periods of little to no pain or discomfort. A diet high in roughage and bran is usually recommended. In recent years, the addition of prebiotics, which are a recently discovered form of soluble plant fibers, into one’s prescribed diet is also gaining popularity. These specially formulated soluble fibers stimulate the growth of good bacteria in the colon, producing a litany of health benefits. Exercise is also helpful. During exercise, the bowel will typically become quieter. If one exercises regularly, the bowel may relax even during non-exercise periods.

Need inspiration to lose weight? Lacking enthusiasm to kick-start your diet? Follow Sondos and Bader on their weight-loss challenge and join them in their quest for a healthier lifestyle. It’s been three months since the start of the year when many pledged a resolution that we’ve all heard again and again: “I want to lose weight’. It’s not something new; some have stopped trying, others may be well on their way but one thing is for sure, until they reach their goal they’ll remain in their cocoons. That’s where Sondos and Bader are different. This recently married couple who live in Kuwait, have both made their fair share of New Year resolutions. Some they’ve kept, others they haven’t. So this time they decided to document their journey over the months on their YouTube Channel “In It 2 Win it”. Sondos has been motivating people on her Instagram account, Loss_it (not a typo - there is a reason why it’s loss and not lose) which gave birth to the idea of showing people what they can achieve if they really want to. Not only that but to help shape a healthier Kuwait. Bader and Sondos are going head to head with each other to see who can lose the most amount of body weight, percentage wise of course, in a period of 4 months and to document this journey to help inspire and motivate others. Under the directorship of Yousef Al Manea, the series will contain 12 episodes, each showing a different take on the changes they’ve made to their living style as well as how they look. In this edition we’ll take you right to the beginning to the first episode which is called, well, the beginning. In the first episode, Bader and Sondos introduce citypageskuwait.com

themselves and talk about their injuries and past weight loss experiences. They state the changes they’ve made to their food, their surroundings and how they built a home gym for themselves. The show ends with them going to the airport, not to travel but to weigh themselves in front of everyone as a way of showing that they are not afraid to admit they are overweight and that they are comfortable with themselves. More is to come on their journey. To see their episodes follow them on Instagram (loss_it) and YouTube (in it 2 win it).

BREASTFEEDING Are you pregnant? Have you heard about breastfeeding and would like to know how it can be successfully established? The key to success in breastfeeding is knowledge and support. This article presents the basic information any pregnant woman or mother needs to know about breastfeeding and how to start out right.

Initiating breastfeeding: Breastfeeding should be initiated within the first hour after the baby is born. Skin-to-skin contact between a mother and a child is strongly recommended, as it helps to regulate the baby’s heart rate and temperature and stimulates the release of oxytocin, which counteracts the stress of delivery. The smell of a mother’s newborn will also help stimulate the release of prolactin, the milk producing hormone. Most newborns will rotate their mouth and naturally look for the nipple as their suckling instinct is at its peak right after birth. If this does not happen, the mother can gently guide her newborn to the nipple. Contrary to the popular belief that mothers don’t have milk until three days postpartum, milk is produced during pregnancy, and is available for the baby right after birth. Shahad AlFadhel Shahad holds an MA in Applied Linguistics. She is an instructor at the Language Centre in PAAET and is also the pperational manager at BirthKuwait. She is passionate about breastfeeding, prenatal and postnatal care and a mother of two angels.

BirthKuwait is a non-profit organization operating as part of The Voluntary Health Association. For more information, visit their website: www.birthkuwait.com or Instagram: @birthkuwait

Colostrum is the yellowish thick milk that is produced for the first three to four days after birth. This highly nutritious milk is extremely important for the newborn’s health and wellbeing as it jump-starts the baby’s immune and digestive systems. It is worth pointing out that a newborn only needs about a small tablespoon of colostrum per feed (2-10ml). This amount gradually increases as the baby grows. Many mothers assume they are not producing enough milk, when actually their bodies are producing the exact right amount for their bundles of joy. When the nipple is correctly placed inside a newborn’s mouth, a correct latch-on is achieved. To achieve this, sit in a quiet place, get comfortable and follow these steps; • Determine which breast you’ll be feeding from and hold your baby using your arm on the opposite side of your body. • Lay your baby on his side, with the front of his body facing you; his head, shoulders and hips should be in a straight line and his mouth should be level with your nipple, but the nipple should be pointed towards the baby’s nose. You want the baby to come to your breast, rather than leaning over to bring your breast to him. • Using the hand on the same side as the chosen

breast, place your fingers under your breast, your thumb along the side, and lift it up and forward (much like the effect of a push-up bra). With your opposite arm, pull your baby close to you, tilt his head back slightly and tickle his lips with your nipple until he opens his mouth wide. • Help your baby get as much of your breast as possible into his mouth by placing his lower jaw on first, well below the nipple. • Tilt his head forward by placing his upper jaw deeply onto your breast; the goal is to get your nipple as far back into his mouth as possible. Make sure he takes the entire nipple and as much of the areola as he can into his mouth. • You can keep your fingers under your breast to help your baby stay latched-on correctly. Moreover, it is advised that a mother sits properly with a straight, well supported back to help her feel comfortable during breastfeeding. This is important because it can prevent common problems, such as back or shoulder pain. If a mother is comfortable, she tends to be less stressed and more relaxed. This usually reflects on her milk production and helps maintain a good milk flow. A breastfeeding pillow or extra pillows under her arm can also help. Research shows that a relaxed and comfortable mother produces more milk, so do not underestimate the importance of being in a quiet, comfortable place and position.

Feeding on demand:

Feeding on demand means breastfeeding whenever the baby demands to be fed. Feeding on demand is highly recommended because it helps increase milk supply and will satisfy the baby (i.e. during growth spurts, where babies demand more milk). In the early weeks, while the mother’s milk supply is being established, it is crucial that the baby feeds at least every 2-3 hours. If your baby is sleepy and not feeding that often, the recommendation is to wake them to ensure they get enough milk and that you maintain a good milk supply.

How to make sure that baby is getting enough milk: There are signs to pay attention to, to help you determine if the baby is getting enough milk. The two most important are the number of wet diapers, and weight gain. Beginning at 1 week your baby should have 6-8 heavy wet diapers every 24 hours, and should gain between 155 and 240g per week. You should also listen for the sounds of swallowing during feeds and the breast should feel empty after each feed. Make sure you empty one breast before switching the baby to the other, to ensure they take the fattier hind milk that comes at the end of a feed.

after each feed. The best approach to prevent and heal sore or cracked nipples is to apply a few drops of your breast milk on the nipples at the end of every feed and allow them to air-dry. Nipple creams, especially the ones made out of natural and organic ingredients, can also be helpful (kindly note that some nipple creams require washing with a cloth before breastfeeding). Nipple shields can also aid to temporarily protect nipples if they are sore or bleeding. If you are feeling engorged a warm compress applied on the breasts before a feed can offer comfort and help to relieve the pain quickly. Having the right bra is also very important. Your bra should be comfortable and easily unhooked for practicality. That is why some mothers prefer to purchase bras designed specifically for breastfeeding, while others use regular ones. What is important is that the bra not be tight because it can restrict the flow of milk and cause clogged milk ducts and possibly lead to mastitis (infection in the breast).

How to increase milk supply:

Nothing increases milk supply as much as frequent breastfeeding. It truly is a supply and demand process, the more the baby feeds, the more milk is produced. The baby’s suckling sends a message to the brain to increase the supply and can normally take a couple of days to take full effect. However, there are a few others things that can be done to help

increase milk supply. To mimic the effect of your baby suckling you can pump for a few minutes after feeds. This pumping will not be to collect milk, so don’t worry if no milk is released. It is instead to stimulate additional milk production. You are basically signaling your body that more milk is needed. A healthy lifestyle and diet is also extremely beneficial to both mothers and babies. Fresh and ideally organic food is best. A breastfeeding mother’s diet should include a variety of proteins, vegetables, fruit, whole grains and hydrating liquids, such as water, soup and smoothies. There are some types of food that have been linked to increase milk supply, such as dates, fish, sesame or tahini, oats, green leafy vegetables and food with ‘good fat’, such as avocado, almonds and other nuts, organic virgin coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil. Additionally, some herbal supplements can be taken daily with main meals to increase milk supply, which usually contain fenugreek. Herbal teas, such as chamomile can also help.

How to Get Support

Birth Kuwait recently established a dedicated Breastfeeding Support Program. Through this program we offer a free hotline where mothers can reach trained breastfeeding counselors who can answer any questions they might have. The Breastfeeding Support Program also has an Instagram account dedicated to increasing awareness and spreading knowledge about breastfeeding.

Practical tips on looking after breasts: It is advised that a correct latch is established early to prevent some of the most common breastfeeding problems, such as sore or cracked nipples, clogged ducts or engorged breasts. Ask for help from a breastfeeding counselor at the hospital to ensure that the latch is correct as early as possible. Mothers should ensure that they are feeding their baby often and that her breasts are emptied

This month, I took inspiration from a colleague and friend who is Bulgarian. One day we were having a conversation about yoghurt and funny enough, I remembered having the most amazing Stuffed Peppers served with Bulgarian Yoghurt… what a fantastic dish! Bulgarian cuisine is representative of the cuisine of Southeastern Europe. It shares characteristics with other Balkan cuisines. Bulgarian cooking traditions are diverse thanks to geographical factors such as climatic conditions perfect for a variety of vegetables, herbs and fruit. The consumption of yoghurt is traditionally higher amongst Bulgarians than the rest of Europe…fun fact!!! PALNENI CHUSHKI (MINCED MEAT AND RICE STUFFED PEPPERS)

MILK BANITSA

INGREDIENTS:

•4 large peppers (also known as capsicum) •500g minced lamb or beef •200g cooked rice (use quinoa as a healthier alternative) •1 onion – finely chopped •2 garlic cloves – minced •1tsp of dried oreganum •1tsp of ground cumin •1tsp of paprika •Olive oil (as much as is needed) •Parsley •Salt to taste

peppers on a baking dish coated with olive oil and salt and cook until they soften. The skins will go black, which gives a wonderful flavor!! Cook for 5-7 minutes until they are soft. Leave them to cool as you will need to handle them before stuffing. 2.To prepare the meat mix, sauté the onion and garlic on a medium heat (I like to add a couple of fresh chilies as I like it with a bit of heat). 3.Once browned, add your mince and fry until cooked (5-10 mins). 4.Add your herbs and seasoning to the mince. 5.Taste and add more seasoning if required. Once ready, mix in your rice or quinoa and top with parsley. 6.Mix with olive oil to set the flavors and leave for a few minutes to settle before spooning the mix into your peppers. 7.Once ready, place back onto the baking tray and cook for a further 20 mins. You can top with cheese if you wish! 8.Serve with natural Bulgarian or any other double cream yoghurt or simply with a small salad!

•400g flour •9 eggs •¾ cup milk •¾ cup sugar •½ cup semolina •1 tsp sunflower oil •1 tsp vinegar •1 cup water •180g butter

METHOD: 1.Prepare a medium-hard dough from the flour, 1 egg, oil, vinegar and water and roll into sheets (500g of ready pastry sheets may also be used).

2.Place the sheets in a tray, basting each with melted butter.

3.Bring the milk to the boil, add the sugar, remaining butter and semolina, stirring constantly. Cool, then add the beaten eggs.

4.Mix well and pour over the pastry sheets. 5.Bake in a moderate oven for 25-30 minutes. 6.Serve into pieces and sprinkle with icing sugar.

COUPLES 2015

Dr. Joanne Hands and Saud Al Tawash Meet Dr. Joanne Hands and Saud Al Tawash - a Power Couple with a very impressive resume! Dr. Joanna, as well as being bi-lingual (English & Spanish) is an experienced psychologist and therapist with particular knowledge of mental health issues. She is also the founder and clinical director of the Kuwait Counseling Center which offers psychological and nutritional services as well as speech and occupational therapy to children, adolescents, and adults and is President of the Middle Eastern Psychological Association. Saud was just 20 years old when he set up his first company, Gulf Telecom. He remains the CEO of this Satellite and Radio communication service provider which serves clients in the Air, Land and Sea and in Remote and Hazardous areas. He also founded ShipDirectInc and ArmorCorp and is a Board Member of Liberty Petroleum Corporation. This year, Saud and his team will be launching the largest online store in the MENA region but he still finds time to be an active sponsor of many local and global NGO’s and Sport organizations. citypageskuwait.com

As a professional, what are the qualities you admire in your spouse? Dr. Joanne: What I admire the most about my husband is his never-ended passion for knowledge. He is an energetic person who can talk with full knowledge about almost any topic in any field. Sometimes I test him and he really shocks me. Saud: My wife is an excellent listener regardless of how long the conversation is. She has an amazing talent for listening and helping individuals and couples with their lives. I often bring her to business dinners and she is naturally gifted about analyzing a guest’s personality type. It is a scary thing that she is always correct about the person’s motives.

Please tell us about your academic backgrounds: Dr. Joanne: I am a Psychologist with a License as a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Professional Counselor (LPC) from the USA. In addition, I am a Certified Counselor by the American National Board of Certified Counselors (NCC) as well as Certified in Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality inventory. I graduated with a PhD in Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, USA, earned my Master’s in Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Loyola University, New Orleans, USA and my Professional Psychology degree from The Rafael Urdaneta University in Venezuela. I have over 19 years of experience working with individuals in private practice as well as in educational and corporate settings. Saud: I started my college education at age 16 in the US and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Management and Aviation from Tulane University, New Orleans USA. I have completed executive and post graduate programs in the field of Aerospace, Telecom and Management from many universities and defense entities. I have several patents filed for the Aeronet and lately the Instalab. I still conduct Research and Development with my team and collaborate with many universities and technical institutes. How and where did the two of you meet? We met in New Orleans, Louisiana while we were both pursuing our education. citypageskuwait.com

Where do you concur and where do you differ from each other? Dr. Joanne: I think we both share a particular passion for helping others; we both like to serve and to share our knowledge and skills. We normally talk about our charity projects. As for where do we differ, I would probably say that Saud always thinks about the “tomorrow” where I am more concerned about the “today” which is a good balance to have in the family. Saud: I am a risk taker and she is not. We do concur on one thing for sure, the safety for our family and community. We take that matter very seriously and will do anything to preserve our family. When it comes to safety, there is no second chance! How do you handle a work-life balance and challenges in a dynamic work environment? Dr. Joanne: I have to admit that it is not easy. I don’t always apply to myself what I tell my clients to do, but I try my best to have my “mental health day” which consist on seeing clients only four days a week and leaving three days of the week for personal use. I also think I have a lot in common with fish because I can be in the water all day without any problem, so I normally go to the beach during the weekends when the weather permits it. Saud: After 10 years of marriage and maintaining almost a 70 plus hours a week schedule, I could say it’s all about planning ahead and having an alternative solution so tasks don’t pile up. My dear friend and mentor Dr. Pulitzer gave me advice on my wedding day about a work-life balance and his advice was, if you want to be happily married always end the conversation with your spouse with a “Yes Dear”. It works for me! Also, never break a promise with your family and be reasonable. When do you spend time with each other? How do you unwind? We spend all weekends together, it is actually hard for us to attend separate commitments during weekends because

that is the only time we spend together and don’t like to sacrifice it. We take our kids out for activities or simply stay by the beach and relax. We both love watching movies and we do that on weekly basis. What is the best gift you received from each other? Dr. Joanne: To me the best gift from Saud has been his friendship, it is something priceless and something I will not change for anything in the world. Saud: Our Children. They are my life! Any memorable holidays? Hahaha, we have many but we can probably say a special one is Feb. 4th which is our wedding anniversary and a day we won’t forget. One would imagine that both of you probably discuss business issues a lot at home too. Does that happen? YES! Every single day. How are household responsibilities divided? Who is the boss at home? Dr. Joanne: Well of course ME!  House responsibilities are divided clearly, I am responsible for daily house matters (groceries, laundry, etc.) and Saud is responsible for bigger matters (car, house maintenance, etc.) As for the kids’ school related matters, I oversee their English homework and Saud does all the Arabic related ones. How do you manage your time together? Do you have any time left over for your marriage at all? Yes of course, we normally spend time together after kids go to sleep, sometimes in the house and sometimes out. We create regular “dating nights” where we just plan to go to a restaurant we have never tried or simply go for an ice cream and drive around. What have been your most challenging moments in life? Dr. Joanne: I think I have had many but one of the most challenging ones was moving to Kuwait, to a new culture, not knowing the language, not knowing anyone, and far away from my family. Fortunately I had my husband and my in-laws to take me by their hand and provide me the emotional support I needed, the rest was on me, to learn how to adjust and integrate. Now I can feel happy to call Kuwait “Home”. Saud: I have many and it’s what keeps me going. One challenge that I will always remember is when my company Gulf Telecom entered Iraq in March 2003 as the first international telecom service provider and establishing the

first voice and data links for the Airports, Ports and Military bases. The company crossed into Iraq with the US marines and British Army and from day 1 faced many challenges in logistics and security which were all eventually taken care of. How do you motivate each other during tough times at work? Dr. Joanne: Tough times are always there, without them it will not be fun. We normally deal with those times by spoiling each other and cooking our favorite dishes, or playing a board game relaxes us; it helps us laugh and get distracted. Saud: My wife is a great motivational speaker and at times I think she motivates me, like how Tony Robbins motivates his audience. We both enjoy cooking and its very therapeutic during the tough times. Usually I prepare our favorite cut of meat the “Chateaubriand” which is the center piece of the tenderloin. Who’s your inspiration professionally? Dr. Joanne: I would probably say Mother Teresa. She said "Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love." And I completely agree with it. She was a fighter whose main goal was to help those who didn’t have anyone to help them. Saud: Without a doubt my father. He mentored me through my career and shares many of his experiences. He is a successful international businessman. My favorite line from my father is “Whatever you do, always focus on being number 1”. What have you learnt from each other? To be persistent and to never give up on what we really want. It may take some time but with determination it will always come. Do you have any common interests or hobbies? Saud: Yes, we both like cars - in different ways but we both enjoy car related activities. I used to race cars and Joanne loved being my co-pilot. We also like watching movies and we both enjoy deep sea fishing and chilling on the beach. Tell us about your children. How have they changed your life? They have changed our way of seeing things and the things we wish for. We used to be a little more adventurous in life but now we are more cautious with what we do. They have been a blessing for us! How do you feel being selected one of the CityPages Power Couples? I feel somehow special and I hope people enjoy knowing more about us and wishing us well ;-) April, 2015

think we differ in the way we approach our goals. R: We are similar in so many ways and different in many others. We have the same taste in architecture, furniture, food and the things we want for the children. We both come from finance majors. I would say we differ in that I'm all about details and he's all about the big picture. Oh, and I love books but Abdulla is allergic to them! How do you handle a work-life balance and challenges in a dynamic work environment? A: Generally, I never take work home. My work ends when I'm out of the office (I do check my emails regularly though!) I give myself free time to see friends and have "my time". I think it's super important for individuals to take some time off in order to re-energize. R: I'm grateful to have flexible working hours. I do most of my work from home, online or out of office meetings. Much of my heavy work (vitrine set-ups, weddings and events) are done overnight, so I have plenty of time during the day for our kids. I get Sunday nights off for "me time". That's been very important for my sanity!

Please tell us about your academic backgrounds. A: I've graduated with a bachelor’s degree in finance. R: After hip-hopping from dentistry to architecture, I graduated with a BS in finance and recently completed my MBA with a concentration in marketing and entrepreneurship. How and where did the two of you meet? A: Long story, but it was on an airplane six years before our marriage. R: Hmmm; long story short - on a British Airways flight. I was heading back to LA, he was flying to Copenhagen. We married 6 years after that. As a professional, what are the qualities you admire in your spouse? A: Perfectionist, goal hunter and multi-tasking. R: His wisdom, long-term vision, negotiation skills and huge ambition. I love that he takes a step towards making our dreams come true rather than sitting back and waiting for things to happen. Where do you concur and where do you differ from each other? A: We are both Finance specialists and family oriented. I citypageskuwait.com

When do you spend time with each other? How do you unwind? A: Usually, family-time is when we tend to spend most of our time together. However, we still have Wednesday's as our "date night. R: Unfortunately, we don't get to see each other as often as I would want to. Friday is family day for us so we make ourselves available for that, no matter what. We unwind by staying in and watching an episode of our favorite series. And we have a "date night" every week. We try to keep our discussion as far as possible from being work-related too. What is the best gift you received from each other? A: Faye, Zaina and Abdulmohsen are the best gifts I got from Reem. R: His heart and the kids for sure. Not that I haven’t enjoyed surprise birthdays in Dubai! Any memorable holidays? A: I think we had a splendid honeymoon. We visited eleven cities. We still talk about it once in a while. R: Our honeymoon has to be at the top of this list. Our prehoneymoon trip was also memorable. One would imagine that both of you probably discuss business issues a lot at home too. Does that happen? A: For sure we do. We listen to each other's opinions regarding issues that might arise. However, we also don't let that be our main discussion.

R: A lot. We make an effort not to let it take over though. How are household responsibilities divided? Who is the boss at home? A: She is. R: He is! Well, we help each other as much as possible. How do you manage your time together? Do you have any time left over for your marriage at all? A: We tend to rotate in terms of babysitting in order for us to manage our responsibilities. However we still have our "date night" on Wednesdays. We would usually go out to dinner or to the movies and we limit our discussions regarding work. R: We do. I believe that when something is important to you, you'll find a way to make time for it. We have our date night and we celebrate special occasions and keep the communication flowing. What have been your most challenging moments in life? A: Every day is a new challenge for me. It's quite hard to tell, especially when I am managing four different roles and still have to be there for my family. R: Hmm. My miscarriages before having Faye have been quite tough on me. Life is challenging every day in different aspects. It’s about believing, not giving up, staying focused and celebrating the small triumphs. How do you motivate each other during tough times at work? A: Rather than becoming preoccupied with thoughts about the ultimate end-game, we focus instead on the incremental success found on the path of fulfillment. We also tend to be kind to one another. R: It’s only normal to have some hiccups along the way. We focus on the next milestone and remind each other why we started and that tough times will pass. Words of encouragement and a hug go a long way too!

R: Excellent negotiation skills, promptness (still learning that one!) and most importantly, how he goes out of his way to help others (something I'd definitely like my kids to learn from him). Do you have any common interests or hobbies? A: Traveling. Unfortunately, we lack the time for that. R: Traveling! And we are both undercover food critiques. Tell us about your children. How have they changed your life? A: They actually make you see the world from a different perspective. All the questions they ask make you reconsider your knowledge about things you thought you knew. They are masters in showing us how simple life can be and how you can be happy. They taught me how to easily make friends, how to dream big and how not to be scared from failure. R: We're blessed; we have the kindest and smartest kids. They show me how to be happy and appreciative at the darkest of times. I take so much pride in calling them mine. That is besides sucking up all my time, energy and sleep of course! How do you feel being selected as one of the CityPages Power Couples? A: I am thankful to you and feel honored to be a part of this issue. Just remember, "Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time" Thomas A. Edison. R: Very honored indeed. Thank you.

Who’s your inspiration professionally? A: H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Vice President of UAE and the Emir of Dubai. R: That's a difficult one. I'm honestly inspired by so many people in different aspects. My father has been one of the first inspirations in my life. My mother has been the one to trigger the artistic part of my career. I also find inspiration from within. I look at what I've achieved so far and that gives me a push to outperform myself. What have you learnt from each other? A: Positive thinking, consistency and being kind. April, 2015

Sicily

Sicily's varied landscape makes a dramatic first impression. Fly into Catania and the smoking hulk of Etna greets you; arrive in Palermo and it'll be the sparkling mountain-fringed Golfo di Castellammare. This juxtaposition of sea, volcano and mountain scenery makes a stunning backdrop for outdoors activities. Sicily and its dozen-plus offshore islands offer enough swimming, diving, hiking and climbing to build an entire vacation around.

Where to Stay

Hotel Carmine

This lovely hotel in a 16th-century monastery has elegant rooms (especially numbers 7 and 30), with original blue-and-gold majolica tiles, stone walls, antique furniture and lofty beamed ceilings. Enjoy your cornflakes in the baronialstyle breakfast room with its historic frescoes and over-the-top chandelier, or sip your drink by the roaring fireplace in winter. Modern perks include a rooftop solarium.

Hotel Garibaldi

Hotel Garibaldi is set on the seafront of the characteristic fishing town of Milazzo, overlooking the Eolian Islands. It features elegant guest rooms and spectacular views. This charming hotel is tastefully furnished with Sicilian-style pieces and offers a comfortable stay in a great location.

Things to do Valley of the Temples Hotel Giardino Sul Mare

This family-run hotel's top attraction is its superb seaside location, a few blocks south of Marina Corta. The pool terrace on the cliff edge is fabulous, but if you prefer to swim in the sea there's also direct access to a rocky platform below. Most rooms have terraces and high ceilings; they're a bit tired and bland otherwise.

Sicily's most enthralling archaeological site, the Parco Valle dei Templi encompasses the ruins of the ancient city of Akragas. The highlight is the stunning Tempio della Concordia , one of the bestpreserved Greek temples in existence and one of a series built on a ridge to act as beacons for homecoming sailors. The 1300-hectare park, three kilometres south of Agrigento, is split into an eastern zone, with the most spectacular temples, and, over the road, the western sector.

Villa Romana del Casale

The Unesco-listed Villa Romana del Casale is central Sicily's biggest attraction, having reopened after years of reconstruction. It is decorated with the finest Roman floor mosaics in existence. The mosaics cover almost the entire floor of the villa and are considered unique for their natural, narrative style, the range of their subject matter and variety of colour.

Where to Dine

Santandrea, Palermo

La Piazzetta del Museo

Cappella Palatina Hotel La Piazza

Draped in bougainvillea and situated on the eastern side of the island, La Piazza offers exclusive and tranquil accommodation. Cool and elegant rooms, all with spectacular views of Caletta Bay, are full of rattan furnishings. There's also a gorgeous swimming pool terrace and an excellent restaurant.

citypageskuwait.com

This priceless jewel of a chapel, designed by Roger II in 1130, is Palermo's top tourist attraction. On the mid-level of Palazzo dei Normanni's three-tiered loggia, it glitters with stunning gold mosaics, its aesthetic harmony further enhanced by the inlaid marble floors and wooden muqarnas ceiling, a masterpiece of Arabic-style honeycomb carving that reflects Norman Sicily's cultural complexity.

Bon voyage!

HORSES, HATS AND LOVE HEARTS

AT THE DUBAI WORLD CUP

The Dubai World cup is the world’s richest horse race. But it’s not just about horses; it’s about hats, heels and handbags. This famous event was everything I expected it to be – a sun soaked scene of sophistication and glamour, full of beautiful fillies of both the two and four legged variety. The pristine Emirati dishdashas were a majestic contrast to the fashion conscious females whose towering heels and flamboyant hats threatened to outshine even the brightest of jockey’s silks. All looked equally at home in the parade ring. But the gentlemen were not to be out-shone. In addition to the Best Dressed Lady, Most Elegant Lady, Best Hat and Most Creative Hat, there was also an award for Best Dressed Man and Best Dressed Couple – and the prizes were certainly worth making an effort for. In fact, even the horses were judged prior to each race, with the cash prize going to the groom of the Best Turned Out Horse. The excitement was tangible and the tension grew with each race as the expectant crowd looked forward to the all important 20th Dubai World Cup. Nine horses, race number nine at nine o’clock. It was tempting to assume that horse number nine would win. It was however Prince Bishop, wearing a winning number one, who citypageskuwait.com

romped home first, securing H.E.Sh. Hamdan Bin Mohd Al Maktoum another famous victory. After the pomp and ceremony of the prize giving, we were treated to a dazzling dance display by hundreds of Emirati school children, their national flag waving proudly with each routine. A laser show then pierced the skies before a thundering firework finale to rival any big city New Years Eve display. But the firm favourite was yet to appear and as she was driven track-side in a sleek 4x4, Kylie Minogue addressed the crowd through the open roof, promising them a performance to remember. And she didn’t renegue on that promise. Once on stage the ageless Aussie pop princess treated us to a string of hits, old and new, as well as a poignant rendition of ‘Need You Tonight’ – a touching tribute to the late INXS star Michael Hutchence. Her stamina rivaled any I’d seen on the course that day and her chic stage outfits were the envy of many, including a racy-red pantsuit, a sequined mini dress with thigh-high boots and a savvy black jump-suit with pill-box hat. Her ninety minute set ended all too soon and as the audience were showered with love heart confetti, it was safe to say she’d won a few hearts of her own.

THE WORLD NEEDS

HEARTS

Nadia AlHassan Nadia Al-Hassan is a student in Ireland, studying Journalism. She is passionate about writing stories and poetry. Nadia loves helping people with her stories. She believes that words are beautiful and powerful.

“I wish the world had more hearts,” said Lulwa to her husband, Ahmed. Ahmed looked at his wife as tears rolled down her face and asked “What do you mean dear?” She turned away to look out at the beautiful scenery and watched the sun set. “Humanity” she whispered to Ahmed. Again, Ahmed looked at her with confusion on his face; he wasn’t too sure what she was talking about. He put his arms around her and gave her a tight hug.

“Lulwa, stand up” Ahmed said as he got up and put his hand out to help her. She stood up and he told her to put her foot forward to take a single step. She did. “All it takes is one step to make a change. It may be a small change but these steps all add up. You are making a change and you will be able to help, all it takes is one step at a time and a single person to make a huge difference in this world” he said to her with a huge smile on his face and love in his eyes.

“I just think that the world needs more people with good hearts, there is very little humanity left in this world and it hurts me” she said.

“You think so, Ahmed?” she asked.

Ahmed gave a little smile. He knew how passionate his wife was about wanting to save the world and helping everyone.

The world is a beautiful place and although a lot is happening, there are still people in this world with hearts who can make a huge difference in so many people’s lives and help make this world a better place to live in. One small step can make the biggest difference in the world. Smile at a friend, help an elderly person cross the world, listen to someone who is going through a hard time, feed a poor person, give money to a homeless man, play with a child and make them laugh. Give your mother a big hug and tell her how much you love her, visit sick people in hospital and brighten up their day, volunteer and help raise money for the children affected by war.

“You are right Lulwa, there is very little humanity left but it is still there. It’s people just like you who still exist that are restoring faith into the lives of everyone and putting humanity back into this world. That is something to smile about” he said as he took hold of her hand and squeezed it gently while kissing her forehead. “Oh but Ahmed, there is so much going on in the world. Children are being hurt, people are going hungry, men are getting angry at each other and going to war while innocent people are going through so much pain and are suffering. The world doesn’t need more people with power; the world needs more people with loving, caring and kind hearts. A world where everybody gets along with each other” she said with such hurt in her citypageskuwait.com

voice.

“I know so, sweetheart,” he replied.

Small changes make big differences and this then leads to more doors being opened for even bigger changes to take place. The world needs more people with hearts like each and every one of you reading this. Let’s all make a good change in this world.

Writing is More Than Style or Grammar Identity is a peculiar thing. It functions, it operates, it generates a material force in spite of its mythic origins. As humans, we cannot help but create narratives about the world, about ourselves. Whether true or false, narratives about the self and its place in the world, its duty, its “destiny,” carry with them a productive energy. Simply put, our narratives allow us to face the immensity and chaos of our cosmos, and to endure our inability to understand our world. Our narratives allow us to comfort ourselves and others. Identity, then, is not about accuracy. It’s about force. It doesn’t just tell us something about ourselves. It moves us. We do not simply invent identities, we embody them, and when we do, we draw upon their source.

Nada Faris Nada Faris is a Kuwaiti who writes poetry, articles, and fiction in English. Her latest book, Before Young Adult Fiction, is a collection of short, award-winning articles, poems, and short stories that shaped her writing voice. In addition to our capacity to create stories, humans are also social creatures. We evolve in social settings, imitating our elders in behavior, language and taste. At some point, we desire to break free from our ancestors, to confront the world, to face the balagan of our existence. We break free when we realize that the very narratives that used to serve as solace, now act as anchors, weighing us down, immobilizing, preventing us from exploring hidden legends lurking underneath our human skin. As an Anglowaiti writer, I would like to focus this article on Kuwaiti identity from an Anglowaiti perspective. Today, it seems that everywhere one turns the debate about our national identity rages on two poles. Either we eschew the present and shun modernity with its Western influences (from culture, to commodities, to travel) in order to dedicate our lives to the very timeconsuming task of recreating the past in the present. Or else we reject the past itself, disavow its influences on our personal and collective identities, and dwell in the commercial, secular present, amidst our garments and gadgets, paying taxes like Westerners, freed from familial and tribal connections. Our battle for national identity is waged in binaries. We view the past as a concrete edifice on which we stand today, or as the source of all our grudges: economic inequalities, bureaucratic stagnation, and xenophobia. Herein lies the deadlock: we either return to our roots or we sever them from ourselves for good. Our historical identity (today, we call it our national identity, before it was tribal, or religious, or imperial) is also a mythic construct with productive power. Historical identity is based on our social past and on our collective memory of that past. And as with all other forms of identification (gender, class, race, disability, sexuality, talent, vocation, interest, sect, ethnicity, etc.), historical identity is vital to our stability as a nation, because it too does something. Casting our historical identity aside, like throwing the baby with the bathwater, is detrimental to our wellbeing. National identity contains mythic features, true, but it also unlocks incredible potential for solidarity, resistance, and generosity. This potential became manifest during the Iraqi invasion in 1990,

citypageskuwait.com

when Kuwaitis suddenly prioritized their national allegiance to the country above others. The way for an Anglowaiti writer to begin approaching the subject, then, is to understand that historical identity, while merely a categorical label, is important on social and political levels. Second, that the past contains seeds of powerful potential for the betterment of society. In sifting through the past, our duty as Anglowaiti writers is to gather these seeds and to cultivate them in the present, to nurture the hidden legends that will ensure a more inclusive, secure, and productive future for our nation. Third, that accompanying these seeds are a series of misfortunes and shameful blunders. The past is not the site of eternal glory. It is, rather, a chain of choices, some good and others disastrous. Unlike traditional writers who sound only the praises of the past, the task of the Anglowaiti writer is to conduct serious, critical, and objective analyses of our previous mistakes. These ought to be highlighted. They ought to be displayed and discussed in the Anglowaiti text. In other words, the Anglowaiti writer should view the national narrative via pragmatic goggles, not idealistic lenses, to build on the kernels of positivity, while locating the root of our serious errors, in order to help discover solutions or simply to avoid repeating our mistakes in the future. To break the deadlock, we must think beyond binaries. Our identity is indeed a result of the past. This does not make it stable. Rather, our identity flows in fluidity, always ready for new transformations. The choice for us should not be about reliving our norms, or adopting a vague identity, because the world is still full of borders, sanctions and legal constraints – and instead of pretending that they do not exist, our job is to change them, to mend them, to render them more inclusive. In the introduction to my book, The Elephant in the Room: Stories and Articles from Anglophone Kuwait, I say “The aim of my work (and my whole Anglowaiti movement, really) is to establish a serious mindset that recognizes Kuwait as a democratic, Arab sovereign state that appreciates diversity, advocates hard work (not wasta), and offers a safe haven for anyone (Kuwaiti and non-Kuwaiti) to work and live with respect.” I write this because there is no Us and Them in a country. There is only us; all of us living in close proximity to one another, working for our livelihoods, for our families, enjoying public and private resources, and contributing to the nation’s history, to its security, and to its lustrous legacy. Our art should aspire to generate (even if it does not reflect on the surface) an identity based on cooperation, respect, responsibility, hard work and strength. Or else, as Slavoj Zizek might say, we set the stage for another post-Yogoslave experience “where ethnic cleansing was prepared for by the poets’ dangerous dreams,” or we enable the emergence of another Hassan Ngeze who “systematically spread anti-Tutsi hatred and called for their genocide.” Anglowaiti literature is art with a social function. As such, use it to fashion a better future.

From the New York Times bestselling, award-winning author of The Dive From Clausen's Pier, a sweeping, masterful new novel that explores the secrets and desires, the remnant wounds and saving graces of one California family, over the course of five decades.

In 2013, the New York Times published an obituary for Yvonne Brill. It began: “She made a mean beef stroganoff, followed her husband from job to job, and took eight years off from work to raise three children.” It wasn’t until the second paragraph that readers discovered why the Times had devoted several hundred words to her life: Brill was a brilliant rocket scientist who invented a propulsion system to keep communications satellites in orbit, and had recently been awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. Among the questions the obituary—and consequent outcry—prompted were, Who are the role models for today’s female scientists, and where can we find the stories that cast them in their true light?

ALEPH

I’m sure you can all tell by now that Paulo Coelho is one of my favorite authors, if not my ultimate favorite. There is something about his writing style, as well as the topics he covers that really gets to me. This month I was struggling to cope with some of my fears so a friend suggested that I skip my OCD habits when it comes to reading my books and start with Aleph (2010). He thought it would be beneficial and I kid you not, it did help the situation. Paulo Coelho was born in Brazil and has become one of the most widely read and loved authors in the world. Especially renowned for The Alchemist (1988) and Eleven Minutes (2003), he has sold more than 130 million books worldwide. His books have been translated into 72 languages and have been published in 150 countries. He is also the recipient of many prestigious awards; amongst them the Crystal Award by the world Economic Forum and France's Legion

d'Honneur. Paulo Coelho was inducted into the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 2002 and in 2007 he was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace. Aleph (2010) is a story of human souls and their entanglement through each new birth journey. Many people believe in reincarnation of the soul. This book is the story of the recreation of Paulo Coelho's soul. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this phenomenon, the meaning is defined as follows:-

1.The belief that the soul, upon death of the body, comes back to earth in another body or form. 2. Rebirth of the soul in a new body. 3. A new incarnation or embodiment, as of a person. Aleph (2010) is an encounter with our fears and our shortcomings; a search for love and forgiveness and the courage to confront the inevitable challenges of life. It reminds us how each end gives us the opportunity of rebirth. April, 2015

ALI N. AZIZ

FOLLOWING HIS ARTISTIC DREAM Ali N. Aziz is not your typical artist. The Saudi-born Syrian began his career in medicine but soon realized he was destined to follow his artistic dream. Leaving his medical career behind, he swapped his scalpel for a stencil and concentrated instead on website design. He is currently the senior web and graphic designer for the Riyadh based Saudi Post. His passion however, is WPAP Art. This distinctive form of art was developed in the early nineties in Indonesia and combines straight lines with sharp, vibrant and contrasting colours. Ali has been studying WPAP Art for the last three years and hopes to become the first person in the Middle East to master the technique. Judging by his striking image of Meghan Trainor on our front cover, it seems he is well on the way. We look forward to seeing more of Ali N. Aziz, and his art, in the future.

citypageskuwait.com

Please tell us a little bit about yourself - who are you, where do you come from and where are you going? I'm Ali N. Aziz from Syria, although I was born and still live in Saudi Arabia. I am in love with WPAP ART. I started to study this art three years ago. I am looking forward to being the first person to master this art in the Middle East. Tell us about your education. I graduated as a Medical laboratory assistant from Aleppo University, but I also have a Diploma in website design and content. This year I start studying for my ADOBE exams. I am a qualified ACA Adobe Certified Associate in Adobe Illustrator CC and soon hope to gain ACE as an Adobe Certified Expert. You started in the medical field but why did you change to graphic and website design field? I was trying to find myself in this field but couldn't continue and stopped one year after graduating. I started designing back in 2003. Since that year I have changed a lot of things in my life until eventually I got caught up in the arts. Tell us about experiences.

your

work

I have worked in many companies in Saudi Arabia since 2005. I started my career with Saudi Post as a web designer and I still work for them today. I have done lots of things but still crave the opportunity to be more creative and to create a new art. Between web and graphic designing, which one do you prefer most and why? Seriously, I love web designing and spend lots of time trying to achieve the best design. It makes me happy when I try to make something no-one has done before; something unique. Where do you look for inspiration in your day-to-day work? Usually on websites like Behance, but the most important thing to inspire me is what I read in books. Real life events are inspiring too.

What do you do when you’re not working? I try my best to spend my leisure time with my family and friends. How do you keep yourself updated with new technologies in web development? Nowadays, the internet is a necessity. I use the internet maybe more than I use my lungs to breathe! I always try to follow up with twitter, Facebook and other websites that specialize in designing and arts. Tell us about any success stories and about awards that you have received. In the last eight years I have designed three interfaces, the most recent of which was awarded the Middle East Award of Excellence in Dubai (Award of Best Portal in e-Commerce). During these years of experience I have realized that I enjoy working with a professional mix of different nationalities. What are some of your hobbies? I love to travel and sometimes I like to play Handball and to swim. Which do you prefer, Mac or PC? I use both operation systems. What is your favorite software? I LOVE ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR. What is your message for us at CityPages magazine? Firstly I would like to thank CityPages Magazine for the lovely interview. Also I would like to thank Mr.Jameel Arif for his kind words. Finally, I hope my art inspires all of the designers in Kuwait. You can follow me at Instagram and Twitter / wpapart

MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK

It’s not every day you get to meet a famous fashion icon; particularly one as mysterious as Nahar from Saudi Arabia. So I was thrilled to be able to meet this Fashionisto and have the opportunity to get to know the man behind the mask a little better. The interview is arranged by Maali Al-Oudah, founder of the luxury fur line MaliMo and a keen designer herself. We meet in the beautiful surroundings of Becarre; a fitting setting for this image conscious individual. Not surprisingly, he attracts a lot of attention. But despite his obvious fame, Nahar is humble and courteous. It is a pleasure to meet this genteel character and to be able to hear the story of his climb to success. Against the odds, Nahar followed his dream and made a name for himself in fashion. He has worked with names such as Harvey Nichols and H&M but insists “It’s not about brand, it’s about style”. Born in Riyadh, the fourth of six children, he has steadfastly refused to reveal his identity to the public since the introduction of his mask in 2007.

citypageskuwait.com

April, 2015

You’ve worked with children in the Harvey Nichols ‘Mini Chic’ campaign. How did the kids react to your mask – were they not frightened? No, they loved it! The kids saw the mask as a kind of cartoon character. We had so much fun. What does your family think of your fame? At first, I think they were worried I wouldn’t be accepted. It was 2007 and fashion was a difficult career choice, particularly for a male. I did it without seeking permission. I was young and for the community, it was a shocking thing. Now, they are very proud. They support me so much. It was a good result. Do you help them with their clothing choices?

What is your favourite item of clothing? The white shirt – every woman and man should have one. Which city do you think leads the way in fashion? London. The street style is very inspiring. I love the simplicity and seeing the different styles and colours. Other places are too focused on looking for high end brands. London is so different. Who inspires you? I admire Victoria Beckham, not necessarily for her style but because she knew what she wanted. She knew that one day she would be a fashion icon. She followed her dream.

Yes, all the time!

What advice would you give someone wanting a career in fashion?

Do you have comfortable clothes to relax in or are you always dressed up?

Follow your dream and don’t let anyone bring you down. Trust yourself.

Yes, it’s important to be comfortable otherwise it doesn’t feel right.

Tells us what’s next for Nahar. I’d rather not talk about it - it’s a secret!

Prior to your fashion fame, you were a model and actor. How much do you think that contributed to your current success? I don’t think of myself as a model or an actor, I consider myself more of a character; a character representing a concept. Early in my career though, I represented Harvey Nichols which included being a model. Do you still feel as though you’re acting when you wear your mask – are you playing a role? Sometimes. People think I’m mysterious but I think every artist should choose a different character to portray. Masks are often considered Top: Raoul and worn by those with sinister something to hide. How would you Trouser: By Malene Birger respond to that theory? People think I am hiding myself but I’m not hiding. Too many people are judged by the way they look. It doesn’t matter how handsome you are, it’s about what you wear and how you present yourself to the world. citypageskuwait.com

SCENT AND PERSONALITY In this era, perfumes and colognes are used daily by both men and women to enhance their self-esteem and personality. The Egyptians were first to understand the power of the sense of smell and perfected the whole concept of scent, despite others also exploring the phenomenon. Perfumes are believed to have been used in very early religious rituals and are likely to be much older than records would suggest. Basically, fragrances consist of a head note, a heart note and a base note. The head note is immediately noticeable once the fragrance begins to spread as the molecules evaporate very quickly. As the head note is the first to be sensed, it shapes the initial impression you have of the fragrance. Popular examples are citrus, light fruits or ginger. The heart note of a fragrance is first perceived in the hours after the head note has evaporated and represents the individual character of the fragrance. Popular head notes are rose and jasmine. The base note lingers for the longest amount of time allowing the fragrance to fade away softly and pleasantly. Common examples of base notes are vanilla, musk and sandalwood.

A fragrance is a mixture of chemicals and essential oils. Because the evaporation rate of the different oils will vary, the perfume may smell different as time goes by. A perfume is not just one fragrance, but a mixture of several scents from either natural or synthetic sources, combined through the art of a creative perfumer. There are a variety of methods of manufacturing fragrances. Two of the most important steps include:

ASAMA Perfumes The creative method gave ASAMA Perfumes the time and the opportunity to craft fragrances while working with the highest quality ingredients in a bottle and using Arabic and Western scents as a unique concept point for the fragrances. They welcome your comments at PR@ ASAMAPerfumes.com Follow them on Instagram and Twitter: @ASAMAPerfumes

1.Maceration: Raw materials are submerged in a solvent which dissolves the desired aromatic compounds. The process can take from hours to months. This technique is used to extract odorants that would otherwise be damaged by heat. 2.Enfleurage: Flowers are pressed into a layer of odorless oil. The oil will soak up the scent from the flowers resulting in a floral essence. Perfumes can be used for different purposes. It is important to be honest and ask yourself what you want your scent to achieve. Do you need it to reflect who you are as a person? Do you want it to lighten your mood? Maybe you need a new perfume to help you become more attractive to others. Understanding what you want from your scent is the first step to choosing the right one for you. April, 2015

The ‘It- model’ Karlie Kloss sure managed to keep it classy and elegant with this dress at the Brit Awards. The rule says not to wear white to weddings unless you’re the bride but this one is so simple surely the bride wouldn’t mind….

TRANSLUCENT SEMBLANCE You are one fascinating lady and you are not scared to show it. Being the wedding guest who catches the ladies’ eyes won’t bother your secure soul. So why not try a daring yet stylish sheer gown?!

The beautiful Katy Perry rocked a fully fringed, beaded yet sheer dress at the Grammys, combined with tonal sandals. The key to her look is not looking dull, hence the super bright colored hair!

After winning the title of Olympic champions at the 2014 Winter Games, Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov have managed to win the hearts of the artisans at Zenith. The Russian figure skating duo met with them at the manufacture in Le Locle. The two ambassadors caused great excitement amongst the children at the local ice skating clubs, and then on the ice at the La Réserve hotel's "Winter Lodge", where a festive, sophisticated atmosphere was enjoyed until late in the evening. It was on the values of accuracy and reliability, and the subtly different approach peculiar to haute horlogerie that the Zenith brand was founded 150 years ago. It was through a bold, performance-focused approach to figure skating that Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov managed to achieve the same level of expertise that the manufacture's artisans have been pursuing since 1865. The collaboration between Zenith and the Russian skating champions is evidence of this. Both share the same vision for their daily goals: relishing a challenge, adventure and surpassing themselves. TWO WORLDS; ONE MEETING The two ambassadors for Zenith also greatly enjoyed their visit to the manufacture in Le Locle, home of the finest traditional craftsmanship, where the artisans create the most exceptional timepieces. Here, the pair discovered a pioneering spirit instilled by the brand's founder, which has made it one of the top three watch manufactures to be active internationally since the beginning of the 20th century. Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov then met the local Figure Skating clubs based in La Chaux-de-Fonds and Neuchâtel. To their delight, twenty children were able to have their photos taken with the Olympic champions and share their passion for skating, since no-one has a better insight into what it takes to reach the very highest level of the sport.

FROM THE PRESS Is Your Child Getting Enough Vitamin D? adidas reveals new signature boots for Leo Messi that pay homage to star’s hometown

2015 so far has belonged to Leo Messi. No player in any major league has scored more than the Argentinian. Leo has been directly involved in 24 La Liga goals this year; no other TEAM has scored more. For club and country in 2015, Messi has played 17 times, scored 20 goals and grabbed 11 assists. His most recent hat-trick made him the all-time leader in La Liga hat-tricks, at just 27. Now, adidas has unveiled the new boots that will be worn by the world’s best player. The new Pibe de Barr10, inspired by the Barrio of Las Heras, Rosario, where Messi learned to play the game. Las Heras was where Leo Messi first began his journey to becoming the greatest player on earth. The streets and pitches of the Barrio are where he first shaped his game. The new Pibe de Barr10 were designed in collaboration with Rosario-born graphic artist Ignacio Valenti in a style that pays tribute to Messi’s childhood. Fusing urban-inspired raw brush strokes with polished sleekness on the synthetic hybrid touch upper, the Pibe de Barr10 embodies Leo Messi’s footballing style; beautiful, yet dangerous. Speaking about his new signature boots, Leo Messi said: “I did leave Rosario when I was young, but I still have my people, my neighborhood, and my favorite spots. Pibe de Barr10 have a lot to do with my life, my childhood and a lot to do with me.” The boot has been created as part of the #therewillbehaters series that celebrates the “hate” at the heart of football. There were some that never believed Leo Messi would leave Rosario, but he has gone on to break records and win trophies. You don’t get to be the best in the world by listening to the doubters. Messi wears the Pibe de Barr10 and there’s nothing the haters can do to stop him.

New Look’s launches its Spring Summer 2015 collection which features this season’s most covetable key pieces and trends for men and women. For women sport references dominate the Le Sportif story. Stripes are key as well as sports tipping, binding and colour blocking. Jumpers are tied around the waist and slogan print ribs and sweats provide an effortless vibe to this cool and casual story. In the Nu Luxe trend, contrasting boyish shapes and monochrome slogans meet blush pink shades and A-line silhouettes. This season’s sports obsession is set to have an overly feminine feel. Eclectic prints and kaleidoscopic colours lend themselves to contrasting silhouettes and utility shapes for a vivid interpretation of an international sports theme, in the Global Sports collection. Blue is the colour to know as both cobalt and pastel hues dominate the Into the Blue collection. Tiled prints and classic denim are punctuated with a dash of white and earthy rust tones for a gentle retro feel. Footwear and accessories are as strong as ever this season, with a real focus on fringing, tassels, metallic and snake print. White filters through the whole collection and complements delicate necklaces and body chains. Chokers and bum bags make a comeback while flatform and ghillies really make a statement.

V-KOOL™ women’s racing team secured their place among the top 5 Go Karting teams at the recently held GulfRun’s 12-Hour Endurance race at the SIRBB Circuit here in Kuwait City. While the rules of engagement changed from the previous 24-Hour endurance race held in December 2014 where the racing team debuted, the women showed that no matter what time or day, they were going to give their fellow teams (all men) a run for their money. Each Go Karting vehicle was allowed to stop only to refuel during which time a change of team member was allowed. Now imagine being on the race track for almost 2 hours (until the fuel tank would be empty) pushing every cell of your body to stay focused and alert while navigating the turns and ensuring that you’re complying with all the racing rules. Well with encouragement & consistent guidance from their passionate team manager – Mr. Mubarak Al Rumaidhi, the 3-member team of Sara Al Shaban, Fatima Abdulkareem & Dalal Al Jassem started off the race on a good combination of speed and lap timings that saw them complete the last 400 odd laps out of the 956 laps at the fifth place. Now that’s what we call sheer grit! Exhausted and thrilled after having raced for almost 6 hours, Sara Al Shaban (Miss Gulf Run 2014) remarked that she was extremely happy to have been part of this amazing race and thanked V-KOOL™ Kuwait for their support and recognition to represent passionate women racers. What was more inspiring was the commitment of the team to take on more of such races.

ARIES (March 21 - April 19)

Listen, learn, and maybe find some new love. Surprise yourself - and others - at the April 18 New Moon. They will be working overtime to surprise you. Keep it playful and no feelings will be hurt. Sometimes an old trick can still work. The last week of the month is calmer and very productive, with more casual fun. Starting April 29, progress may come in small steps, but it will be steady.

Get mentally organized and make some big, bold plans during the April 4 Full Moon. What is it that you really want to do and where do you really want to go? Don't do it now, but make plans and you will soon. The big, broad world and a million people may be screaming for your attention at the New Moon of April 18. It's flattering perhaps, but no reason to overreact. Avoid being drawn into someone else's hysteria and missing a lucky chance that's meant just for you. The weekend of April 25 is a lucky, lovely time. Relax and enjoy.

April 29 and April 30 are prime days to get informed and show off your smarts.

(November 22 - December 21)

They could be dealing with shortlived problems that seem important. Make big changes around the house at the New Moon of April 18. Not everyone will like everything, but go ahead and please yourself. You may even want to revive something that you used to dislike. That was then, this is now. Enjoy some peace and quiet and the company of agreeable people on April 29 and April 30.
