Dear Readers… “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”
—T. S. Eliot I start with this quote as few years ago when we started CityPages we certainly didn't know how far we would go. But with this 44th issue I am certainly sure that we have a long way to go and I am extremely excited that we are just 6 issues away from our 50th issue. Our team is already preparing and planning a special issue for you. You suggestions are always welcome. While working on this issue, I once again realized that we at CityPages never rest. Our team works 12 months a year to make sure that you don't have to miss your favourite magazine. So, I would like to thank my entire team for their dedication and for hard work during the Ramadan to produce this special Back-to-School issue for you.

I would like to introduce you to our new team member Sarah AlHajji who has joined us all the way from the United Kingdom and introduced to us a new segment "YUMGALORE". Eid Greetings Dear Readers,
Dear Readers Happy Eid! It has been quite hard summer as usual in Kuwait with mercury touching maximum every now and then. I hope now the travelling season is over and people are back to Kuwait trying to cope up with their routine. They are starting the life where they left before routine. That is the reason at CityPages we are having a special issue with reference to ‘Back to Life’. Eid of course is also the prominent feature of this month which people will be celebrating across the globe. Play time is over for kids and now it is the time to get the bags ready for school. It is quite hard for the young ones to get back on track after such a leisure period but they have to…. We have plenty of special features in this issue with reference to the theme of the magazine. You will enjoy reading the interview of the Think Tank‘s Abdulaziz Al Rushaid and Mubarak Dawoud who highlight the new training courses taught at their institute. Plenty of other features are there to quench your reading thirst. As a family magazine we always have something for everyone and same tradition has been maintained in this issue as well. Just pick up your copy from anywhere around the town and see what special is there for you. I assure you that after reading the issue you will not be disappointed. Your feedback is always valued for us so don’t hesitate to send us your feedback about the issue. Stay Tuned for our next issue which will bring for you many surprises.
Abeer M. Alabduljalil
It’s that time of the year when we are soon due back to our routines, and this may be much needed for some, after a hectic summer of holidays and the Holy Month of Ramadan taking place back to back. I for one am writing this on the eve of my annual mini trip to a Greek Isle to soak up the Sun, dig my toes in the Sand, swim in the cold Sea and stare out onto a horizon that features a beautiful sunset every day. I am told that the entire country will also be there, which can be a bit of a damper when one is trying to get away from it all, but who can blame anyone for wanting to escape the heat and the monotony of life. This month’s CityPages features a few changes to the layout, can you spot them? We are always evolving and recognize that small changes are a great way to stay fresh. That’s why we are also featuring a new Blogger of the Month Zori Ashkanani and PR person of the month Talal Al Othman who heads up the function for Hamra Tower, for these are the movers and shakers nowadays. My person of interest for the Living Room Lounge is with Maha Al Otaibi, a fantastically determined Kuwaiti woman who has inspired me all over again. When reading her story about how she established her Madly Yours make up line, you will find that she is an original trailblazer, and I must say I am so very glad to have met her. Stay tuned for more about her in future, as I’m positive she’s not going to stop. Finally, stay tuned for next month’s big Fashion issue we are working hard on as we speak, but then again, when are we not working hard?
Have a wonderful August!

THE SECRET VICTIM IN ALL OF US Have you ever been in the presence of a person who likes to play “victim”? It’s painful, isn’t it? Some so-called victims are easy to spot. “Woe is me” is their mantra as they mope around, whining about what life has done to them, and being devoted to their sad state. But, there is a whole other category of people who act in ways that are far more subtle and difficult to recognize. The problem is that the undercurrent of complaint and misery that is generated by these “undercover” victims creates stress and exhaustion not only for them but for those who are around them, too. Taking on a false sense of victimhood has become pervasive, which is destructive to society. Some people play that role daily. But, mentally almost all of us fall into the trap of feeling like a victim at least now and then. The good news is that we can all overcome that sense of victimhood and regain some sense of control over our own lives.
What is Victimhood? At the root of victimhood is an internal power struggle where the victim sees what he perceives as problems in the world around him (including family, work and even global environment). However this person believes he is helpless and that whatever the situation is, it is beyond his power to change things. Another sign to pinpoint a victim? COMPLAINING! Victims do it a LOT and their constant chatter is usually along the line of “what is wrong with other people?” “Everyone else is the problem” The ‘only ifs’ are always focused on others and victims believe they are just reporting the crimes of their boss, mother, husband, kids, the school system and the world and how these people and institutions have all wrongly impacted them. This focus on other people makes it hard for victims to look at their own behavior to see it for what it is — their complaints. Also, they adamantly deny they are acting as a victim. On the flip side, victimhood also provides a subtle reward to the complainer. As victims observe others’ failings and how hurtful they are, they set themselves up as martyrs, secure in the knowledge that, although they are the wounded party, they are right — and the feeling of being right is very powerful. Victims feel heroic for putting up with the bad behavior of people around them and being the good guy in the story. Acting as a victim also places people outside the situation — peering in and observing the “poor behavior” of others. By declaring themselves to be outside observers, victims assign power to others. Victims may sigh that they are helpless to change a situation — be it a dominating spouse, a difficult job, a community they dislike,

P.S. As always, I would love to hear back from you so please feel free to drop me a line on my email: zahrataqi@ gmail.com or find me on FB: http://www.facebook.com/ MilestonesCoaching or twitter: @MilestonesCoach
etc. — but in truth this belief allows them to squirm out of action to change the situation. They blame their spouse or boss or whoever is in the wrong… and then become a martyr, perceiving that they can’t change the situation. This, in turn, spares victims the pain of giving up the goodies, be it, for example, the comfort of marriage (even if it is painful), the security of a pay check (even if they hate the job) or the relief of not moving. The sad reality is that victims are so busy shining their haloes and feeling superior to the “wrong-doers” that few victims are really interested in changing their behavior. But victimhood, whether occasional or chronic, is a passive way of coping. Victims waste energy on complaining instead of putting the energy into action where it can serve a useful purpose. Complaining is an attempt to be dominating because the victims do not help or do anything to change the situation, they simply watch and comment about it. But ultimately this is fruitless because human happiness is connected to productivity and to making a difference. When we have the ability to fix things that are not working for us, to solve our own problems, it makes us feel good! So is there a flip side to all of this doom? YES!! Fortunately, there is a path that leads out of victimhood! Finally a light at the end of a gloomy tunnel.
GETTING PAST VICTIMHOOD 1. Listen to your complaints. Victims’ sighs and complaints cover up a basic feeling — fear. This is what often lies under the behavior. Complaints often
center on something or someone that truly does make victims unhappy, but they are too frightened to take action, even by just speaking up. Instead, they hide behind their whining words. And so the first step away from being a victim is to listen carefully to the content of your complaints and look for recurring themes and what you avoid saying or doing. 2. Locate the fear behind the complaints. The easy rationale for complaining is that it is merely reporting, just observing how it is. But life is not the weather and chronic complaints have an emotional basis. That is where you will discover the fear. Let’s say you are upset about the “ridiculous” rules your company has for its employees or perhaps the way your spouse is behaving, and you regularly regale your friends about how you put up with all this unfairness. The logical action is to quit talking about it and speak up and/or move on. But, action always involves risk because there is no way to predict its consequences. For example, giving up a job or a marriage is scary territory with lots of risk. However, if you go to the heart of the matter and identify your fear, you empower yourself to make a choice. You know how you feel and what you fear, and now you are in a position to decide what you want to do with this. Will you take the risk of discussing your feelings with your boss or spouse? Will you even decide to walk away? Will the pain of change be greater or less than the pain of staying in the situation? While action in the form of communication and/or physical change is the most productive path, you may choose to stay in the current situation, realizing that the pain of change would be too great. By choosing not to change, you are acting on real feelings, which makes you no longer a victim in the situation. Making a decision from a place of honesty — whatever the decision — is a big step forward because it negates the victims’ belief that they have no choice in the matter. Once you take this step, you begin to see that you have the power to choose and that there are always two paths. You can either stay in a situation or leave it, it is as simple as that! 3. Give up complaining. This is probably one of the most relentless traits of victimhood. This occurs not only on an individual basis, but has become pervasive in the media and among politicians, which makes those who watch the news “victims of their victimhood.” Refusing to complain is a major shift but extremely freeing because it shuts the valve to the emotional release found in victimhood. Instead of voicing a complaint, look inward to determine why this bothers you — and what you can do about it. Usually the actions called for change are generally simple and obvious, but starting anything and taking the plunge or that first step is always a brave act. Instead of whining that you have no friends, make a plan about how to meet new people. Rather than moan that your job is taking you nowhere, decide what you want to do and start the process of educating yourself for it. The first step you take toward a more productive, victim-free life will lead to the next step… and the next… until one day sooner than you may think, you are there, no longer a victim, but a responsible individual who takes life by the reins. Enjoy that feeling and revel in it, you have certainly earned it! August 2013

How To Read Faster, The Effective Way
There are two methods to improve our reading technique :-
1. The Guide Method Place a guide (pen, pencil or finger) underneath the first word of a line and move it smoothly across the page from the beginning to the end of that line as you read the words simultaneously, synchronizing with the movement of the guide. Repeat the process for each line. And slowly increase the speed of the guide, a little faster than is comfortable, as you get used to this form of reading. Your eyes get trained to read faster and helps to get rid of the habit of speaking to yourself. The ability to read quickly allows you to choose how fast or slow you want to read.
2. The Selective Reading Method When you have a lot of material to read, it is essential that you skip a major chunk of the paragraphs and concentrate on the important parts. If the material
18
citypageskuwait.com
you are reading is on a familiar subject it is that much more easy to use this technique. The basic steps in this type of reading is to read the first sentence of the paragraph, skim the rest of the paragraph for key words and read the last sentence of the paragraph. Aim to improve your ability to focus your attention voluntarily and to focus your attention fully even in situations where it was difficult to concentrate. The more interested you are in what you are doing, the easier it is to concentrate.
Other Reading Techniques: Interacting with the text is a great way to retain in memory most of what you read. lMake notes as you read each paragraph or after each section. lInclude your thoughts, ideas and cross-references. The more you include your own ideas, the more reliable your long term memory is likely to be. lHighlight
key words that carry message.
lDecide whether you agree or disagree with the author's assumptions. lHighlight what you do understand, underline what you don't understand, then highlight it when you understand it. lTo ensure peak concentration, take breaks often. The ideal break period is approximately 5 minutes for every 30 minutes if you are only reading. If you are reading a number of different texts and taking notes you could stretch your reading time to between 45 minutes and one hour before you take a 5 or 10 minutes break. lTo cope with external noise, wear earphones with appropriate music, ideally without words and not too loud. Baroque music is best for maximum concentration with approximately 55 to 60 beats per minute. lMake sure it is not too melancholy and only play music you enjoy. Mozart, Vivaldi and some of Beethoven's work are also good for concentration.

Many mothers wonder, can I continue to breastfeed and fast during the month of Ramadan? What about if I’m pregnant, will fasting be safe for me and my baby?
One mother told us, “I fast but then I get tired with fasting, so I resort to feeding my baby formula.” Another mom said, “I couldn’t breastfeed any of my 3 daughters after fasting during Ramadan. My milk supply had dwindled with fasting, and I had to switch to formula.” This needn’t be the case for you. There are allowances made for breastfeeding and pregnant mothers. No mom should feel she has to switch to formula if she doesn’t want to or put herself or her baby at risk in order to feel she is fulfilling her religious requirements. “Islam is a religion of mercy, wellbeing, and welfare” says Heba Al Ali, Founder of the Breastfeeding Support Club and Co-Founder of BirthKuwait. “Legislation has come from scientists and Islamic scholars indicating that breastfeeding or pregnant mothers-similar to those who are diabetic or sick or traveling-- have all been exempted from fasting.”
TIPS FOR PREGNANT AND NURSING MOMS DURING RAMADAN
What should you consider as you decide whether or not to take an exemption from fasting? If you are pregnant, you should consider the over-all well being of yourself and your baby, the length of days during Ramadan, and the stage of your pregnancy. Always consult with your doctor as you decide whether or not you are well enough to fast. If the days are longer, you will be at increased risk for dehydration, but if the days are shorter, fasting might be more of a realistic option. In addition, consider what trimester of your pregnancy you are in. Research has shown that babies born to mothers who fasted during the first trimester of their pregnancy are more at risk for low-birth weight and mental disabilities in adulthood. If the days are shorter, you are healthy, and you are past your first trimester of pregnancy, talk to your OB to see if fasting is a realistic option for you and your baby. If you are breastfeeding, you should also consider your over-all well-being, the age of your baby, and the length of days during Ramadan. Again, if the days are short, you are less likely to become dehydrated, and your body will remain healthy enough to maintain your milk supply. “Fasting for periods exceeding 15 hours, especially on consecutive days, affects the mother’s ability to breastfeed,” cautions Heba. “She becomes strained and no longer strong enough to breastfeed on demand. She may decide to supplement with formula, but the decreased suckling on the breast will decrease her overall milk production. In addition, even though one of the benefits of fasting is that the toxins break down and are expelled from the body through fluids (including mother’s milk), fasting inhibits the production of milk especially if the breastfeeding woman does not remain properly hydrated.” Dr. Alia Abdeen, Neonatologist in Sabah Maternity Hospital & Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) recommends “Considering that this year Ramadan happens to be in the Summer and breastfeeding mothers would be fasting more than 15 hours in this scorching heat, mothers should avail themselves of this exemption and not fast if her baby is breastfeeding exclusively. However, if her baby is older than 6 months and she has successfully introduced solids, she can opt to fast.” “To sustain herself,” Dr. Alia recommends, “moms should reduce their activity, drink plenty of fluids in the evenings, sleep as early as possible, and break their fast with complex carbohydrates to avoid sugar crashes and light headedness.” If you are pregnant or breastfeeding during this Ramadan, take care to fast responsibly by considering your circumstances, consulting with your doctor, and honouring this special time in your and your baby’s life.

What is Sciatica? The term sciatica refers to a pain that is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve.
SCIATICA HAVE YOU EVER HEARD THIS TERM? You may have heard the term sciatica from someone who experiences it. Today in this article I want to draw your attention towards this problem and help you understand what actually sciatica is?
The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It runs from the back of your pelvis, through your buttocks, and all the way down both legs, ending at your feet. When something compresses or irritates the sciatic nerve, it can cause a pain that radiates out from your lower back and travels down your leg to your calf. Sciatic pain can range from being mild to very painful. Some people also experience numbness, tingling or muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot. You may have pain in one part of your leg and numbness in another.
Causes Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes pinched, usually by a herniated disc in your spine or by an overgrowth of bone (bone spur) on your vertebrae. More rarely, the nerve can be compressed by a tumor or damaged by a disease such as diabetes.
Complications Although most people recover fully from sciatica, often without any specific treatment, sciatica can potentially cause permanent nerve damage. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience: • Loss of feeling in the affected leg
24
citypageskuwait.com
HEALTH
• Weakness in the affected leg • Loss of bowel or bladder function
Treatment Most cases of short-term (known as acute) sciatica responds well to self-care measures. You'll heal more quickly if you continue with your usual activities but avoid what may have triggered the pain in the first place. Although resting for a day or so may provide some relief, prolonged inactivity will make your signs and symptoms worse. Other self-care treatments that may be helpful include: Cold packs - Initially, you may get relief from a cold pack placed on the painful area for up 20 minutes several times a day. You can use an ice pack or a package of frozen peas wrapped in a clean towel. Hot packs - After two to three days, apply heat to the areas that hurt. You can use hot packs, a heat lamp or a heating pad on the lowest setting. If you continue to have pain, try alternating warm and cold packs. Exercises - Stretching exercises for your low back can help you feel better and may help relieve nerve root compression. Avoid jerking, bouncing or twisting during the stretch and try to hold the stretch at least 30 seconds. Over-the-counter medications - Pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Brufen) and naproxen (Aleve) are sometimes helpful for sciatica. For persistent sciatica (known as chronic), you may be advised to try Surgery — This option is usually reserved for times when the compressed nerve causes
significant weakness, bowel or bladder incontinence or when you have pain that progressively worsens or doesn't improve with other therapies. Surgeons can remove the bone spur or the portion of the herniated disc that's pressing on the pinched nerve.
When to see a doctor? Mild sciatica usually goes away given time and patience. Visit your doctor if self-care measures fail to ease your symptoms or if your pain lasts longer than a week, is severe or becomes progressively worse. Get immediate medical care if: • You experience sudden, severe pain in your low back or leg and numbness or muscle weakness in your leg • The pain follows a violent injury, such as a traffic accident • You have trouble controlling your bowels or bladder
seat with good lower back support, arm rests and a swivel base. Consider placing a pillow or rolled towel in the small of your back to maintain its normal curve. Keep your knees and hips level. Practice proper lifting techniques - If you stand for long periods, rest one foot on a stool or small box from time to time. When you lift something heavy, let your lower extremities do the work. Move straight up and down. Keep your back straight and bend only at the knees. Hold the load close to your body. Avoid lifting and twisting simultaneously.

Prevention It's not always possible to prevent sciatica, and the condition may recur. The following suggestions can play a key role in protecting your back: Exercise regularly - This is the most important thing you can do for your overall health as well as for your back. Pay special attention to your core muscles — the muscles in your abdomen and lower back that are essential for proper posture and alignment. Ask your doctor to recommend specific activities.

Buffalo horn eyewear combines the exclusivity of a natural material and expert craftsmanship, as well as resonating luxury, individuality and comfort. These frames are not mass produced in an automated manufacturing process, but are carefully handcrafted by highly qualified artisans. Buffalo horn is so unique that no two frames will ever be the same. The horn of the Asian water buffalo is predominately used in the production of buffalo horn frames. The material is a byproduct, meaning that the water buffalo are never killed nor harmed to harvest their horns. A water buffalo’s horns can grow up to 2 meters in length. However, due to the high quality standards demanded in the manufacturing of horn frames, no more than 20% of all harvested horn can be used. The horns of animals living in the wild are not used in the manufacturing process since these always show signs of damage, such as cracking and marring resulting from the daily roughness of free ranging life. Therefore, only the horns of domesticated water buffalo are used for this purpose.
pale transparent to white, different shades of brown and anthracite to black. These color variations make each horn a unique piece fashioned by nature. As a natural material, buffalo horn has extraordinary characteristics for the wearer. It feels pleasant on the skin and is ideal for allergy suffers as it is free from nickel components. Although the horn is finely polished, it takes on a slightly matte surface after a short time of coming into contact with the skin. This change is not a quality defect, but actually increases the comfort in wearing. The matte and somewhat rougher surface helps stop the frame from slipping, even with heavy lenses. Natural horn frames require special care and treatment as the material can react to various environmental factors. Extreme heat, too much moisture and aggressive cleaning products should be avoided. An ultrasonic cleaning device should never be used to clean a buffalo horn frame. Instead, a specially developed cream can be applied to the frame to retain its shine and beauty.
Horn is a more difficult material to work with than widespread spectacle frame materials like metal or acetate. It requires high temperatures and precise handling Natural buffalo horn frames are a statement of luxury, in a high end yet modest to flatten this naturally curved material. Once flattened and cut into tiles, the frame manner. These classic frames are not just a fashion trend, but an investment for all shape is carefully cut out with special steel knives. The individual frame pieces are connoisseurs of high quality spectacles. then meticulously treated and polished before being mounted together to create the spectacle frame. The production of a buffalo horn frame is a gradual process and it can take several weeks to perfect a single pair of glasses. As a traditional artistic handicraft, it takes years of experience, a high degree of specialization and perfect attention to detail. For this reason, buffalo horn eyewear is only produced in limited quantities. Each horn has its own unique shade and color structure. The color is influenced by the age of the horn; the older the horn, the darker the color. Colors can range from August 2013

HYDRATION
Just because your coffee has water in it doesn’t mean you’re hydrated!!!
If I had a nickel for every time I heard someone say, I’m not dehydrated because I’m not thirsty I would be a very rich person! The story of hydration is one that seems to be resisted by all; water is not evil. Living in such a hot climate, and where summer seems to be the longest season of the year, I felt it fitting to tackle the topic of hydration first. An interesting fact I discovered through my research; did you know that as humans we roughly loose 450 ml of water a day just by breathing? What’s worse is that it goes up to 1 Litre of water in hot climates or when exercising. Meaning that we are in the 1 Litre range living here in Kuwait. The human body is composed of 75% water; and the chief function of this water is to maintain a stable environment inside and around our cells. As a result of this stable environment, our cells will be able to acquire sufficient nutrients and will be able to help in eliminating waste cells. So the next question would be, how much water is enough water to get me through the day? Paul Chek calculates water intake by taking the person’s weight in kg and multiplies that by 0.033 resulting in the number of liters to drink per day (60 kg x 0.033=
28
citypageskuwait.com
1.98 l per day). We as humans are not designed to be drinking energy drinks or juices out of a juice box, nothing replaces water, in fact with sodas and juices (packaged) what we get is potential for tooth decay, sugar addiction, caffeine addiction, insulin resistance, increase chance of kidney stones, insomnia and even nervousness! So why bother with all of that when water does that job minus all the potential problems you could have? Now the question will arise regarding
herbal teas, as long as the herbal tea does NOT contain any form of caffeine, then you are fine; but for every cup of caffeinated drink (coffee, tea, soda) you have, you need to make sure you have the equivalent in water to counter act the effects of the caffeine. Finally I would like to also touch on the fact that drinking room temperature water is much more beneficial than drinking cold water. The reason behind this is a simple test, if you drink a glass of ice cold water and jump around, you can most likely hear the water sloshing around in your stomach, whereas drinking room temperature water allows the water to assimilate in the body right away. And remember, just because you’re not thirsty doesn’t mean you don’t need to drink water!

Gym Etiquette 101 McEnroe tantrums, XY chromosomes and common sense to boot!
Throughout my somewhat adventurous journey in fitness, I’ve been fortunate enough to achieve a couple of career accolades or two that warrants my 15 minutes of fame at the dinner table when out and about with friends.
…
My first shy contact with fitness (and an accolade, you could say), was when I initially lost 20+kgs. Or my first foray into martial arts and muay thai. Competing in London. One could even say that a milestone in my career was when I first moved to Kuwait, as I’ve long had aspirations to work in the Middle East and had been fortunate enough to be taken notice and headhunted by my current GM, Yves Preissler.
In the February 2013 issue of CityPages, I had pointed out several gym do’s and don’ts prompting you, a gym-user, to ponder on whether you were committing these serious gym-offences at your local fitness establishment.
Whatever it may be, it is suffice to say that I have been blessed with many opportunities in fitness.
An article published in The Telegraph Online (www.telegraph.co.uk) states that research has proven that men tend to become hopeless show-offs in front of attractive women. Professor Bill von Hippel who led the study conducted by the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, stated that such ‘peacocking’ behavior was aimed at impressing a potential mate- an evolutionary reason I’m sure.
One of my more “amusing” accolades would probably have to be losing my temper and throwing a 20kg dumb bell and walking out of the free weights area in a not-soamused-state a couple months back. Now before you go “Oh, she threw a McEnroe (John McEnroe, pro American tennis player with 7 Grand Slam single tennis titles and was infamous for throwing tantrums on-court),” I had a good, if not GREAT reason to show how vexed I was at the gym. Long story short, I was about to do a one-arm dumb bell row when a male gym patron sitting in the bench next to me, decided that he had not finished his set of dumb bell pullovers and as such, kicked my bench to allow more room for him to do his set. Interestingly, I was on it and was just about to start on my set and had I not gotten up in time, he could have seriously injured me.
30
citypageskuwait.com
Hence my rage and dumb bell throwing.
Well here’s my follow up to it: Having an XY chromosome doesn’t officially make you a certified personal trainer.
However here, in Kuwait, at the gym, nothing annoys female patrons more than a know-it-all telling everyone how they should be training. If you’ve had positive results with your training method, that’s great…. For you. What may work for you, may not work for others and one could even put someone at risk if the advice given is hazardous. If gym-goers wanted advice, they would seek it from an appropriate source; their local gym instructors and personal trainers. Capisce? First come, first served.

You hear this all the time at your standard buffet-restaurant. Wanting that serving of mahalbia but you got there too late? Sorry buddy, you should’ve come earlier or wait for the next lot to be made. The same can be said with training at your gym. If that piece of equipment is occupied, that bench is taken, or even that spot where you’d like to stand and curl in has someone, wait your turn. Even better, ask the current user for permission on whether you can “work-in” with them, ie. they complete a set and then you do yours while they rest and so forth. The gym is usually a place where gym-goers go to de-stress, unwind and load up on endorphins. Now imagine a fitness environment where it’s a constant struggle to ensure your dumb bells aren’t taken, having to argue your way on why you had that bench in the first place and jostling for floor space to do your walking lunges, doesn’t seem like a positive and fun environment now to de-stress does it? A little bit of common sense, goes a long way. In this day and age, you’re not going to solely meet your standard ‘meathead’ at the gym. A lot of business entrepreneurs, business men and individuals of various backgrounds and professions work out. Why? Because exercise provides a myriad of benefits. #hello. Now imagine this, there you are at your favourite gym. It’s peak hour meaning aside from the above individuals at the place, your friends are also at the gym. There’s a great vibe going on. Some catchy tune is playing. Regardless of your busy surroundings, you’re talking loudly and over at your gym posse who are on the other side of the floor, ie. you’re yelling. You then saunter over to the dumb bell rack and decide to do a dumb bell row on the rack itself regardless of the fact that there are 4 gym benches available to use. Why? Cause you’re too lazy to carry that weight over to the bench and would rather hold everyone up from the weight rack. If what I’ve just described sounds like someone you know, then unfortunately that individual is not being gym-courteous nor are they displaying any signs of common sense. Hence at my gym, if that were to occur, don’t be surprised if you get a 20kg dumb bell chucked at you sometime soon. #justsaying

INTERVIEW
The principle goal of education is to create men who are capable of doing new things, not simply of repeating what other generations have done - men who are creative, inventive and discoverers. This is what Mr. Abdulaziz Al Rushaid and Mr.Mubarak Dawoud are doing in their institute Think Tank.
t e e M k n i Th Please introduce yourselves to our readers? My name is Mubarak Dawoud and I am Think Tank's Deputy Managing Director, and this is Abdulaziz Al Rushaid the Managing Director of the institute.
Abdulaziz Al Rushaid Managing Director
What was the idea behind establishing ThinkTank Institute? Mr. Al Rushaid's passion for knowledge ignited the need of transferring Think Tank Institute from papers to the real world. As he wanted to share his knowledge of what’s cool (the latest technology) and what matters (skills needed in the market). When was ThinkTank officially opened

to students? Think tank started in May 2012, but wasn’t officially open for the public, we were doing extensive market research to provide the perfect mix. Solving all problems that we as a team had, when we were students, teachers, and managers, with other providers. It helped us molding the current strategy, and inspired our rock solid teaching philosophy. Now, 12 months later we are officially open for public, individuals, SMEs and corporations. How was the initial response from the market? Unfortunately it wasn’t as expected at the beginning, due to the fact that we were introducing new teaching methods, and as all new things in the market face August 2013

INTERVIEW
resistance at their start. Most of our friends and financial analysts suggested that we should bail out, But Mr. Al Rushaid saw it as an opportunity, to provide what the market lacks. Apprentice’s response when first contacted was skeptical, but their response from day one is highly positive and their excitement increases as they progress in their courses. What different roles both of you play in the institute? Our roles are simple and easy, he provides the vision and I execute. Our friendly working environment, makes everyone work on what they love which is their specialty, you’d see Mr. Al Rushaid researching the Internet for the latest technologies out there, which he forwards to me to make them happen. Making them happen, translated in a weekly update meeting between us and our training directors deciding how to transform what’s cool (the latest technology) into what matters (skills sought after in the market). Do you both teach as well? what? We would love to teach, but we are busy planning, researching, following up, updating etc., and teaching needs a dedicated individual. Our Instructors surrounded by supportive ambiance, to ensure they excel in providing the best they could and more. But if we did, Mr. Al Rushaid would be teaching the latest programming language, and I would be teaching designing (packaging and printing) and how to monetize skills learned at Think Tank.. What is the typical duration of your courses Most of our courses are almost a month long, yet the more complex the material is the longer it gets. We have one day courses, three weeks, and up to 26 weeks Diplomas. What are the courses being offered at ThinkTank? We provide courses in designing and programming, for now, on different levels; Fundamental Courses, ProCourses, and iDiplomas. You will notice all my answers, and examples are all of designing applications; well I’m a designer I’ll explain what I know :)... I’m sure Mr. Al Rushaid would answer the same question in the same way, only with Coding and problem solving examples. Fundamental Courses are basically courses focusing on, how to use your Mac and your iDevice professionally, to maximize the user experience. They also awaken the Pro User in our apprentices, putting them on the right track when starting a designing and/ or coding career. Instead of asking our apprentices to enroll in lengthy expensive diplomas, we require them to pass one or both of our fundamental courses (Digital Artist, and/or Coding for non coders). The last session of the Digital Artist and Coding for non coders courses are like a career day; our instructors lay down the potential of each career (designing and coding). For example, Digital Artist Course last day will explain the different tracks that we provide, where there is a market need, of which apprentices can monetize their skills, i.e. Print and Packing, Publishing, Art, Video Authoring, Animation, and Web Designing. ProCourses, are our advanced courses, they require fundamental and intermediate knowledge
34
citypageskuwait.com
to be able to apprehend the material. ProCourses require fundamental courses as a pre-requisite; the intermediate part is what apprentices gain by achieving the program. Some might see it as sales or marketing scam; on the contrary, skills gained in fundamental courses are only the beginning, their will of completion and achievement is the continuum that we rely on. Some of our apprentices thought they have learned it all, when we explain the benefits at the end of each session, you can see the flare in their eyes craving more knowledge. ProCourses are the ACE programs for adobe, and advanced programming courses, unfortunately books and author’s YouTube channels are not enough; our classes are the kick start, however experiencing the application and solving common problems that can be achieved only by actual application usage, which is what we do in our classes; only then apprentices would be able to pass the ACE (Adobe Certified Expert) pro-metric test. iDiploma program, is simply our Fundamental and/or ProCourse, systemized for PAAET (Public Authority for Applied Education and Training) certification. We also provide customized courses for groups, diwaniyas, families and even for close friends; where we customize un-compromised material, based on their preferred times and dates. Can you virtually walk us through the institute? Getting out of the elevator, you will see a daring sign that says “Jump out if you dare”, daring passing by public, visitors, and apprentices (sometimes our own instructors) if they are up to challenge their comfort zones with our workshops? Going further inside, you will be welcomed by a smile from our office manager Miss. Al Amira, right next to my office which I call “iStudio” where me and Mr. Al Rushaid cook, design, and code new ideas. There are 2 labs of Mr. Hani and Eng. Mohammed Den which we call “iNnovation” (dedicated designing lab); and Eng. Abdallah's Playground which we call “iCreativity”(dedicated coding lab). Those 2 labs had a kind of competition going between them. Competing on who is best, that’s why we had to separate them with our operations room that we called “iBee Hive”. Busy minds have got to rest our “iDiwaniya” where we host our designers diwaniya, and of course a help-your-self mini cafe to recharge their powers. The most important room of our humble institute is “iPrayer” room; ultimately it’s the place where we get our blessings and fuel to survive. Finally, when leaving Think Tank a big witty sign designed by yours truly, saying “apologies if we over WOWed you” giving our visitors and apprentices a warm “see you later!” Consider this as an open invitation, just pass by have a cup of coffee or tea, all you have to pay is a smile! Which one of your courses is the “Hot Selling course”? Answering this question could cause turbulence, as we continuously argue if coding courses are more successful than designing ones, since I'm answering this question, I have to say that our designing courses, especially digital artist. Simply because, I'm a designer! And apprentices were able to see the difference from day one. I’m sure Mr. Al Rushaid would argue and say Coding for non coders is the best and hot selling one, for exactly the same reasons. What different and unique ThinkTank
Offers as compared to other institutes? I’m not going to say discounts, because we surely give a lot of them, yet you have to earn those discounts. we really don't care how much we are making, What I believe is making us stand out and same is Mr. Al Rushaid’s vision, we provide and give information more than our brochures, or sales pitches promise. Our instructors literally give their hearts out, most of the time I find myself walking into class forcing both apprentices and instructors for breaks, apprentices just keep asking for more, and more they get. What are your future plans with reference to new programs and expansion? Our first 18 months strategy (about to finish) focus was to give only designing and coding course, there are a lot more ideas and plans to come, for example UX courses, Business courses, Blogging Courses, and much much more, did I mention robots!? Oops! Sorry Abdulaziz! What kind of students can benefit more from ThinkTank institute? Our courses are best designed for Pro coders who want to know few topics of designing world to complete half finished projects; or to gain competitive skills to thrive in the market. Also for young entrepreneurs who want to start a designing career, or even young artists who are looking for the right tools to boost up his/her non-electronic-artistic skills. Your message for the young people desperately seeking quality training? Quality training is everywhere, no place on earth can help you gain quality training unless you decide to, best instructor is yourself. Books, tutorials, and even institutes like ours are merely tools for speeding up the learning process. Find you passion, if you don’t know what it is; let us help you to learn what matters. Your message for CityPages Magazine? Out of all magazines in CityPages category, CityPages is the best there, Masha’Allah, attentive to details, show casing Kuwait goodness, and up for the challenges, keep up the great work!

INTERVIEW
Madly Yours
Maha Al Otaibi is a driven self-made Kuwaiti business woman who turned Madly Yours her small make-up line into a thriving business here in Kuwait. Her story is inspiring because she did not take the easy route to success, but rather singlehandedly worked her way up to where she is today. August 2013
37
INTERVIEW
Her story began as soon as she graduated from high school and boarded a plane to New York with just a small duffel bag, initially with a dream to make it in the US as an artist. She worked and earned her living just like the next person, and eventually got a break working as a wall décor artist/specialist, painting special wallpaper for retail shops, and big projects. Her creativity matured in ways she didn’t expect and she realized that her talents weren’t limited to simply drawing and painting. With time she evolved to produce décor accessories items using glass, and embellishment – and eventually her line took off with such a furor that she found herself receiving orders from large brand names that needed to outfit their retail spaces up and down New York City. Her brand grew and eventually she started selling her own line of home accessories via Saks Fifth Avenue. Her name became well-recognized among the design

circle in New York, and she opened a shop selling her items in a much coveted location of Upper East Side. Maha returned to Kuwait for familial reasons, and although she still keeps her home-base in the US, and decided to start her own make-up line after coming across colorful minerals and discovering their versatility. She started from home, after experimenting with mixing pigment and formulas, while at the same time learning everything there is to know about the benefits of mineral make-up. She eventually found a producer in the US and started developing her line of mineral make-up which also incorporates vegan ingredients. She fought hard to obtain a concession stand at Al Rouda CoOp, where all the international brand name cosmetics are stocked, and where a large number of the Kuwaiti women shopped for their make-up.

& Maha Al-Otaibi
This did not come easy, for she had to be persistent with the Co-Op’s management, and claims it took her a year to eventually convince them to set up the concession stand, with of course sharing of the profits. Years later, Maha’s built a loyal following due to the purity of the product, which is non-comedogenic and naturally offers high sun protection, hence perfect for Kuwait’s climate. Her customers found that complexions benefitted greatly in spite of regular use, and so they eventually started coming back. She is current and continues to introduce new items to her line. Today, Madly Yours is extensive and takes into consideration the latest colors and trends, something that not all mineral make up lines offer. Using her persistence, Maha recently launched her line at Harvey Nichols Kuwait, alongside exclusive and high end cosmetics lines, marking a great
moment for her making it the first Kuwaiti make-up line to receive product placement within a very exclusive high end International department store. Her advice is implied; whatever you envision can become a reality provided you work towards it with determination and passion. Her story is a lesson to anyone who thinks they can’t achieve something, because Maha has, as she’s proved time and time again. Her self-reliance and persistence are admirable and we at CityPages left the interview very inspired indeed.

ART
ARTronauts completeS a year We the ARTronauts are a group of students from different Universities in Kuwait and from outside of Kuwait, art enthusiasts that share the same passion, brought together by Lecturer and Artist Roma Soni to exhibit on Earth Day the 22nd of April 2012 at REUSE 5.0. Jointly we work with a range of media ranging from egg cartons to used paint drums to broken toys to used plastic bags from the beach and the stores to trashed broken cars to bits of fabric to produce art based on social design. We generate contemporary 21st century art that conveys a significant message to the society. Today in a year’s time, our group has grown from 10 to 20 members and brings in diversity from 10 different nationalities. The 10 core members study, work and live in Kuwait all year, the others travel for their education and yet are part of the exhibits. We have exhibited at 12 events in the course of a year. Bashayer Al-Shammari’s pixelated portrait of the late Michael Jackson was created with used egg cartons. Bashayer shares her thoughts: "Art is a way to communicate with society by translating the issues, emotions, and feelings to visuals through the elements of design such as colors and shapes." The vibrant sofa produced out of the entire backseat of a car by member Dhari Al-Qabandi received its fair share of admirers. “On our visit to the junkyard to collect materials, we saw the piles of broken cars dumped in the middle of nowhere. So I came up with an idea to reuse one of them and transform it into something aesthetic, artistic and practical”. Hand in hand with her recycled mannequin, Alia Al-Qabandi describes how her ‘infin-ite’ recycled movable lamp works: “It can be separated into two lamps, a top and a bottom. I used low voltage cylinder tube lights to save energy, and by diving into two, we can save energy and use them into two different areas”. Sneha Soni’s ‘Floral Fantasy’ a free butterfly created with recycled pieces of fabric simulating nature, attracted many enthusiasts. In a matter of days, ARTronaut Dhari shared his ‘Car couch’ and Lamia her ingenious newspaper sofa and her effective newspaper flowers bookshelf in the Interior decoration exhibition at the 360 mall. They proved to every bystander and designer that Interiors

could be designed ingeniously by reusing and recycling simple materials. In May 2012 ARTronauts showcased their creations at 360 mall in partnership with Sanaya club for the Special Needs children. Amongst their admirers was Her Highness Sheikha Amthal Al Sabah who spoke a few words of wisdom to Jena Al-Awadhi. Jena, “She loved that I used old and broken toys for an art piece and even suggested I use CDs, batteries and disposable cellphones which are all very harmful to the environment once discarded”. Jena shares, “I was inspired by Confucius’s quote, ‘Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.’ I decided to recycle, paint and arrange broken toys to create art’. Unsa Khalid’s effervescent, kaleidoscopic mandala made with a
plastic tabletop and colorful plastic bags was nothing short of creative. Unsa, ‘its not the plastic shopping bags which are harmful its actually us who cause harm to the environment. In my project I have tried to show people that these plastic bags could make art if you think out of the box and recreate with them.’ On World Environment Day, at the Scientific Centre on the 7th of June, Alaa Khalifa displayed her recent work, a seat made with an oil barrel, a table made with paint cans and reused plexiglass, and a creative light fixture with orange traffic cones. Alaa’s pieces were definitely head turners. Her furniture designs had an environment-friendly feel in bright appealing colors. She mentions, ‘art is not only something you see displayed in a gallery. In fact, we are all surrounded

ENTERTAINMENT INTERVIEW
Blog Name: Q80 High Street Started from: December 2011 Category: Fashion & beauty
Blog: www.q80highstreet.com E-Mail: q80highstreet@gmail.com Instagram & Twitter: : @q80highstreet
Please introduce yourself and let our readers know a little bit about where you’re from and say a few words about how you got started in the online world. -Fatemah: A Kuwaiti PhD student in linguistics at the University of Manchester in the UK. I started blogging during my masters degree in London, where I passed by the famous Oxford Street on a daily basis on my way to college. It gave me the opportunity to explore the world of high street fashion and be up to date with fashion trends. -Tina: My name is Tasneem but everyone calls me Tina. I'm a German born Kuwaiti obsessed with fashion, fast cars & cats. I started blogging when my cousin Fatemah asked for my help with the blog , because she is busy with her studies. What do you find most challenging about blogging? -Fatemah: Being unique is the biggest challenge. -Tina: Blogging isn't easy, there are many fashion blogs out there so we aim to be the best by pleasing all our followers through interacting with them. Is there a special meaning behind the name of your blog? Q80 refers to Kuwaiti & High Street is a British term that refers to affordable retail stores located on one street. Most Kuwaiti fashion blogs focus on high end designers but we wanted to be unique so we decided on focusing on high street brands more. Our aim is to teach our audience how to mix between high street pieces and high end ones since being stylish does not require spending a fortune. Our inspiration is the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton who was titled the queen of high street. Are you a part time blogger or a full time blogger? Part-time bloggers How much time do you spend on your blog daily and weekly? Around two hours daily on posts; however, blogging is not all about posting. You need to attend events

& exhibitions, visit stores, meet up with designers, surf the internet & read magazines which are all time consuming. In your view, why do most bloggers fail? Fatemah: Because the audience is bored of repetition. Many bloggers post the same topics because they are all invited to the same events. A successful blogger should be creative enough to make his/her post unique & attractive. Tina: Blogging needs patience , especially when there are hundreds of blogs all competing to be on top. A lot of new bloggers give up after few months, many of them unable to reconcile between their social life and blogging. What is the biggest blogging mistake you have done? Unfortunately, we were taken advantage of by some people in the blogging world. We learned from our mistakes. It made us stronger. So trusting them was the biggest mistake. What methods do you use to make money from your blog? The best way to drive traffic is to have a variety of creative topics. For example, our latest page 'The Bag Review' is a huge success because no Kuwaiti fashion blogger review a bag in the same way we do. It helps people in choosing wisely. What methods do you use to drive traffic to your blog? Be a creative writer, write about current issues, use hashtags, and just be myself. I also like to create relationships with people and organizations with good will and causes, and together we can put the word out and spread awareness Can you please give few blogging tips for our readers to build a better blog? Be creative, patient & respect the views of your followers. Jealousy is your biggest enemy. Your message for our magazine? We would like to thank City Pages magazine for choosing us as Blogger of the Month as it is one of the leading magazines in its field. We are also very pleased that the magazine is available online enabling people from all around the world to enjoy it, especially Kuwaitis who are studying or living abroad. And our message to the readers is to never be afraid of trying new trends and mixing prints & colours. Experiencing different things lead you to discovering your own unique style.

Cool New Gadgets To Add To Your Wishlist A dozen great ideas in gear, including a programmable flashlight, a customizable robot toy, and socks that'll last a lifetime
Tech21 Impact Shield
Gerber Daily Carry Hook Knife
KEEN Olympus Socks
The Impact Shield is the toughest screen protector available. As thin as a sticker, it’s composed of three layers: The hard top layer disperses blows, the middle one prevents cracks with a material used in bulletproof glass, and the soft base absorbs energy. The shield reduces impact forces by 80 percent.
The GDC Hook Knife is one of the safest keychain blades made. To release the blade from the sheath, a user slips his index finger through the aluminum ring handle and braces his thumb on the grip. The two-inch stainlesssteel knife is sharp enough to cut through a seat belt.
Olympus socks are guaranteed to last for life. Designers at KEEN reinforced the toes and heels with Dyneema, a fiber 15 times stronger than steel that’s also used in cut-resistant gloves. The result is a sock that won’t get holes. Now, if they could just figure out how to keep it from getting lost in the dryer.
The SPRiZZi Carbonation Machine
Mission EnduraCool Instant Cooling Towel
HexBright Flex The Flex is the first programmable flashlight. Complete with a microprocessor, the six-inch aluminum light plugs into a computer via USB. Once connected, users can program it with open-source codes: for example, a mode that switches the light on or off depending on its orientation.

The SPRiZZi carbonation machine makes soda in one step. A user pops a two-ounce flavor pod into the cartridge. Inside, carbon dioxide from a replaceable canister mixes with chilled water and the flavor. Each pod costs about 35 cents; the life cycle of the CO2 canister is 100 pods.
The EnduraCool towel retains its chill even in the hottest sun. A user first soaks the 27-by-55-inch towel and wrings it out. As air flows around the special hollow fibers, the water inside evaporates, bringing any remaining droplets to 30 degrees below body temperature.
TECHNOLOGY
Acoustic-Electric Pegasus Guitar The acoustic-electric Pegasus guitar cuts down on screechy feedback. Instead of a sound hole, it has two 18-inch-long slits. As a result, the strings and body vibrate less with the sound the speakers emit when the guitar is plugged in.
WowWee RoboMe The foot-tall RoboMe is a customizable iPhone-based robot toy. Through its app, a user chooses eye shapes, facial-hair styles, and accents. And because RoboMe has voice-recognition software and an infrared sensor, it can learn vocal commands and avoid obstacles.
Toshiba Kirabook Laptop
3M Paint Defender The touchscreen on the Kirabook laptop won’t wobble when it’s pressed. To increase stability, engineers switched the typical two-millimeter-wide hinge to a five-millimeter-wide one. The larger hinge means a user can poke the screen without bracing it with the other hand.
FocusTwist iOS APP
Kwikset Kevo Lock
With the FocusTwist iOS app, photographers can refocus an image after shooting it. First, over the course of about two seconds, the phone camera takes dozens of pictures with different focal points. Then users tap the area they’d like to focus on.
Keys aren’t necessary with the Kwikset Kevo lock. Over Bluetooth, a user pairs the battery-powered dead bolt with a smartphone running the UniKey app. The lock opens with a touch, but only when the phone is nearby.
The 3M Paint Defender keeps car paint looking new. The polyurethane-based coating sprays on as a liquid and dries into an invisible film in approximately three hours. The coating lasts about a year—longer than other sprays—at which point it can be peeled off and reapplied.

S ’ E L P O PE ON PERS What is your current job title? PR and Specialty Leasing Executive at Al Hamra Real Estate Company. What is a day at work like for you? Work is never predictable for me as my tasks vary depending on upcoming events and branding requirements at Al Hamra Tower. Specifically, I work on managing these events with all the related marketing activities and conducting team meetings for future projects. My work is not limited to the office since most of the events we plan require personal attendance and supervision, which often happens outside working hours.. Please tell us about your education? I graduated from the American School of Kuwait in 2002 and furthered my studies at the Lebanese American University with a double major in Marketing and Management. Can you tell us a little about your career path? I started my career at Zain’s Marketing and Communications Department where I worked for four years before moving to Al Hamra Real Estate Company. What do you enjoy most about working in the PR field? The creativity is definitely my favorite aspect in this field. We constantly thrive to shape the company’s image by generating positive publicity and strengthening the brand. What are your PR strengths? My strengths are drawn from my previous work experience, both good and bad, which has taught me a lot about the industry and how it works. What qualities make you the People’s Person? Strong communication skills. A successful PR person has to have these skills whether it’s virally, in person or on the phone. Give us an example of when you thought outside of the box. How did it help your employer? Earlier this year we wanted to have a special event at Al Hamra Tower that promoted both the new James Bond Skyfall movie and the tower itself. The result was an event that was first of its kind in Kuwait. We took the movie title “Skyfall” to the next level by inviting base jumping champion Chris McDougall to free fall off the top of the Tower for crowds of people

PEOPLOEN’S PERS
What do you do to de-stress and stay motivated? Spending time with family and friends definitely gives me the motivation that I need to stay focused. How do you respond to criticism? Constructive criticism is always welcome because it helps people grow as individuals. Along the way, have there been any individuals who particularly impressed and inspired you? I’m always inspired by hard workers; people who never give in and always seek to progress. Luckily, I have met several people during my career that have given me such inspiration. How does social media fit into your work? Nowadays, social media has become an essential part of PR because it has a tremendous reach, making it one of the most effective forms of communication. How you organize, plan, and prioritize your work? We always prioritize our events and projects based on the size the event as well as the launch date. What advice would you give to PR students, and those who are soon to graduate? I would tell them to look forward to an amazing career and try to establish strong connections and networking skills, which will definitely be a great help in their future careers.
What work have you done recently, which makes you really proud? Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) events are the ones that make me the proudest because we can’t forget to give back to the society and environment that we are lucky enough to be a part of. CSR initiatives are one of the most important activities in any company. Your message for our magazine? I admire your magazine for promoting cultural awareness and supporting local talents and initiatives. I’m sure you will continue to do so and wish you all the best.

Plate of the month The dish is so simple and easy to make. Ingredients: • Bunch of parsley • 2 lemons
Passionate about healthy cuisine and creating delicious pastries.
• 4 medium sized potatoes • 1 egg • 1/2 cup chestnut flour • large egg plants • 3 red onions • 2 red peppers • Tomato paste • Goats cheese • Seasoning: salt, pepper, cumin, cinnamon,
Topic of the Month Being a Kuwaiti and living in Kuwait, I have been exposed to the adverse effects of unhealthy eating habits. From young childern suffereing from obesity and diabeties, to the older generations struggling with blood pressure and heart disease, health problems are seemingly increasing with time. There are many causes to blame for these problems, but my goal is to tackle the cause that I'm most passionate about: the enmity of healthy food. Often, healthy food is deemed to be unappetizing and bland leaving it impossibly hard for some to eat a rainbow of fruit and vegetables. When someone mentions "healthy" food many people automatically assume "diet" food. Diet food is not always equivalent to healthy food and healthy food is not to be confused with diet food (although one could have healthy diet food through portioning and control.. but this topic can be further disected in another article). When someone says the words "healthy food", what image appears in your mind? Maybe a salad with ginormous chunks of lettuce (rabbit food)? Or perhaps a bouquet of fruit and vegetables proped inside a woven basket? I would love to know what each reader imagined.. it would give insite into the steryotype and reputation of healthy food in Kuwait. But whatever it is you pictured, whether it was the bowl of rabbit food or granny's freshly picked fruit and vegetables, I want to tell you that healthy food is much much more than that. Nutritious food can be delicious, filling, and most importantly satisfying to leave you wanting more. People who are afraid of healthier foods will immedieatly reject a big bowl of chopped up vegetables. Therefore, one must be creative enough to manipulate the healthy ingredient, enhancing the features most loved (color and freshness) and disgusing its flaws (undesired taste and texture). To put it bluntly, healthy food should not be undesired.

• Olive oil The bottom layer of the dish is the parsley salad. For the parsley salad, pick parsley and zest and segment a lemon. For the dressing drizzle olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. For the next layer, the potato “cake”, bake 4 medium sized potatoes in an oven @ 200 degrees c until cooked (about 45 minutes). While hot, peel the potatoes and place in a bowl; add seasoning (salt and pepper), 1/2 cup of chestnut flour, and 1 egg. Form into 1 cm thick disks and bake in a 200 degrees c oven until golden (20-25 min). For the star of this dish, the eggplant mix, place 2 large eggplants and 2 red peppers, sliced in half into a 200 degrees c oven (with the potatoes above to save time) and sprinkle with salt, pepper, and olive oil. Bake eggplant until cooked through and peppers until they are roasted and shriveled away from their skin. Meanwhile, sweat the onions for 30 minutes on the stovetop until slightly caramelized and brown; add the sugar, salt and pepper to help speed up the cooking. Add tomato paste to the onions, and cook out. Remove from the oven and scrape the inside of the eggplant, and discard the skin. Deseed the red peppers and peel them, saving only the flesh. Mix the peppers and eggplant with the onions, season with salt, pepper, cumin, and cinnamon. Lastly, slice some goat cheese and brûlée the top with a blowtorch. Nutritional Facts: Parsley: Rich in vitamin-K and promotes healthy kidney function and skin due to the high content of anti oxidants. Lemon: Great natural source of acid and antibacterial helps aid with digestion. Potato Cake: This cake is gluten free, good source of carbohydrates. Eggplant: Eggplant is high in fiber, fat free, and a great source of potassium. Onions: Onion helps to boost immunity; studies show that onion is a food that can benefit the heart. Goats Cheese-> Lower fat and calories but higher protein and calcium than cows cheese. This cheese also contains probiotics.

Tips & Tricks Let us look at a few hated vegetables, and I will show you a few ways to transform them:
Lettuce 99% of the time lettuce is served in its raw form, chopped into large, pieces leaving it inedible to some people.
Ways to transform: Grill lettuce in a pan with olive oil, salt, pepper and sumac, till edges begin to slightly caramelize. Use this to top sandwiches to add sweetness. Fill the lettuce leaves by first boiling in water for a few seconds then refresh in ice water. Then line cupcake moulds with the leaves and fill with desired
fillling to make a parcel ie.(ground beef or vegetables).
Root Vegetables: carrots and beets Salad that even vegetable haters will love:
Shred the lettucce to make an interesting addition to your salad, or as garnish inyour dishes (just be sure to toss in salt, pepper, and olive oil to make it edible).
n Finely julliene or grate the 2 carrots, 2 beets, and 1 apple.
Blend the lettuce to make a soup by blanching and

refreshing the leaves in ice water then blending with some sauteed onions, water, and yogurt (or sscream if you want to indulge). For crunch texture, add pomegranate seeds, pumpkin seeds, or freshly baked root vegetable chips.

Brussels Sprouts:
Brussle Sprouts are mostly hated for their very bitter taste. The sweetness of the natural honey in this recipe counterbalances its bitterness.
Sweet and spicy glazed brussle sprouts:
3 tablespoons olive oil
1. 2 cups brussle sprouts
Preheat the oven to 160°c.
1-2 red chillis (or more if you like it spicy)
2. Quarter the brussle sprouts and trim the bottom white bit.
Âź cup of roasted and chopped hazelnuts
3.
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
4. Place brussle sprouts and chilli in a baking dish and pour liquor over.
Cooking marinade: Âź cup low sodium soy sauce
5.
Ask The Chefs
Finely chop the chilli.
Place in the oven until golden and caramelized.
6. Serve with hazelnuts and sesame seeds sprinkled over top.
1/3 cup honey 2 teaspoons tamarind paste
How can I get a perfect poached egg? 1) Make sure your eggs are as fresh as possible. When eggs are fresh the white of the egg stays better intact making it less likely for your egg to break during poaching. 2) Use a very large pot to poach. Fill the pot with water and for every litre of water add 50ml of white vingear to the pot. 3) Bring the water and vinegar to a boil, then lower the heat. When you drop your egg inside you do not want the water to be boiling, you want it at a light simmer. 4) Break the egg into a small cup or bowl. Make a vortex or mini tornado inside the pot of simmering water + vinegar using a whisk. Once the mini tornado is formed, wait for it to slightly settle down then drop the egg in gently, but quickly. 5) Cook until your egg reaches your desired doneness. You can tell how much your egg is cooked by feeling it. The softer, the less done it is, the harder, the more cooked it is. August 2013

vs Hollywood Broadway /is a street in the U.S. state of New York. Perhaps best known for the portion that runs through the borough of Manhattan in New York City, it actually runs 15 mi (24 km) through Manhattan and The Bronx, exiting north from the city to run an additional 18 mi (29 km) through the municipalities of Yonkers, Hastings-On-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, Tarrytown and terminating north of Sleepy Hollow in Westchester County It is the oldest north–south main thoroughfare in New York City, dating to the first New Amsterdam settlement. The name Broadway is the English literal translation of the Dutch name, Breede weg. Broadway is known worldwide as the heart of the American theatre industry. So today I would love to put the spotlight on the broadway plays that transformed into movies.

Fame in the Adriatic “All yield obedience to others.” Chapter Six
Antonio Ziani, the planet of human flesh, the politician who grew up with my father, my mother’s ticket out of—what did Signora Barberino call it?—this “dunginfested village,” chokes on a fit of coughs. And my mother? Let’s just say her expression tells me that when we get home the cane will do a whole lot more than kiss my skin. Although a part of me feels guilty for embarrassing her, the feeling is really so small and so insignificant that I bury it beneath my newfound realization that I don’t need society to realize my dream. Why? Because it is society itself that prohibits me from achieving it in the first place! So, there it is. A ripple of nerves in the pit of my stomach, a warm bubbling of sorts, assures me that Giuseppe had it right all along. Why play by their rules? Why sacrifice? Why hang our heads in shame for not fitting when we could just as easily laugh, walk around in slippers, and make spontaneous long-term decisions with utter disregard to social expectations? And if Caterina is right, and Giuseppe is only lashing out against society because he is hated by it first, well then so am I! Society doesn’t love me. It calls me a woman, a spinster, the daughter of a dead father, a sister to no brother, and an anomaly simply for coveting knowledge. “Maria! Apologize to Uncle Ziani.” I roll my eyes. “This insolent girl needs a man to yield her obedience!” cries Ziani. “I’m sorry,” I say and turn around. Before I can escape, I get knocked down, landing flat on my bottom. My bonnet slips off and rolls on the ground. My ribbon unravels, and my mane escapes and blows in various directions, making me feel like Medusa. “Awfully sorry,” says Vittoria, with total condescension. “Are you certain?” I snap back. “Because it felt like you did it on purpose!” She smiles. Her face so flawless. Where’s Caterina when you need her? I try to get up, but Vittoria steps on my hand and walks away. “You dog! You filthy, wretched—”

But my mother will have none of it. She pulls me up, covering my mouth, then she rotates me so I can face my father’s classmate, my husband-to-be. I keep twisting to growl back at Vittoria. Mother says, “Forgive her, Signore, Maria’s nerves are a little agitated from the earlier disruption. She doesn’t know how she got caught in the middle of a nobles’ quarrel, so”—she pulls me and slides her hand over my mouth—“one more chance, please, she will be more than happy to receive you for dinner tonight. Oh, and you can get to sample her exceptional cooking!” My mother must be desperate if she’s lying about my cooking. When I turn around for the last time, I see Vittoria smirking at me as she makes her way toward Luciano de’Pellegrino! No. No. No. This day can’t get any worse, and before you judge me, I know he’s crazy, all right? But he’s my madman! He was looking at me during the sermon! He was asking me what I thought! And for three whole hours he was proposing to me! Granted it was all in my imagination, but my imagination matters! I am so filled with rage that I walk away. Mother calling behind me? So what! People blocking the street? So what! Actually, no wait! I take that back! Out on the street I am bombarded by people, knocked this way and that, and the smell of their armpit hair and body sweat floods my nostrils. What the dickens is going on outside? I call for help, for anyone to stop shoving and pressing against me, for anyone to stop yelling and attend me, but like a poor, indefensible insect under the giant sole of a soldier’s boot, I am squashed, and when I fall on the ground, I am trampled down. The cane is nothing in comparison. Nothing! “Giuseppe!” I don’t know why I scream his name, but I do, and I do it in such a way as though my whole life depended on it. I hear my name in the distance when I slide on the floor. Two masculine arms drag me. They haul me over a shoulder, and my chin bangs against my abductor’s back. I kick and shriek! No! This cannot be happening! “For the love of Mary, Maria, quit moving!” The voice sounds familiar so I obey. When I realize that it is one of the twins, one of Caterina’s brothers, that he wasn’t abducting me, and that I must’ve made a giant fool of myself running out of Church, I decide to fake fainting to save face, so I throw my arms down and let my whole body go limp as I utter a breathy “Oh!” and stop moving. Now I am not a foolish child who ran away from her suitor; I am a damsel in distress in need of male assistance. “Egad!” the twin—for I do not yet know which one it is—swings me around, bumping me into a group of men by accident, and since I am playacting, I bite my tongue to prevent myself from vocalizing the pain. “Alfonso! Caterina! Here! I found her, but she’s fainted!” He wades through the crowd until he reaches his cohorts. Caterina mumbles, “Typical, typical,” for some time until I feel us stopping. One of the men in my party raps on a wooden door, and I hear Alfonso introducing himself—“This is Alfonso Gardenidis. I ask of you to let us in until the commotion dies down on the streets!”—then the door unlocks, and we enter. I am so curious to find out where we are. When I hear Arabic spoken, I deduce that we are in the Ottomans’ house. I am laid down on a spongy couch. My performance is so convincing! Lo Spasimo del Virgine! I am so pure, so innocent, swooning like the Virgin herself at the Passion. Hafza bint Yazid asks about my health, and she bids her children to hurry into the kitchen where they get me wet towels, a jug of water, and … onions! I scrunch my face in disgust. “Oh good! She’s waking.” The first thing I see when I open my eyes is the tip of Ricardo’s nose. “Maria? Maria, are you all right?” I close my eyes again. How can I say, without being rude to the young man who saved my life, your breath stinks? So I moan a little. “Oh, oh, my poor hare.” No. No. No. Wrong move. I push him back a little and attempt to rise.
LITERATURE
When I sit up, I realize that my head is actually woozy, and my vision blurs for a moment. Hafza bint Yazid sets her table for us with the help of her children. I recognize some of their faces as part of the train of children that greeted me and Giussepe in the morning. Only four are present from the total of six, three boys from the ages of seven to thirteen, and a nine-year-old girl who was not among the morning’s train. The small living room is overflowing with carpetweaving paraphernalia. There are yarns everywhere, wool, images of designs stacked against the walls and couches, and the pulleys themselves with the string half strewn. The Ottomans are weavers, who make carpets for city nobles as well as foreign merchants who dock in our harbor. Caterina, glued to the window, chews on a dry piece of bread as she stares at the swarm of people who block the street. She asks, “What happened?” to no one in particular and receives no response. She doesn’t turn around to ask. The sunlight, pouring through the glass, bathes Caterina’s body and draws a sort of halo around her. I pop an olive in my mouth and smile. I am the swooning Virgin, and she is a glowing saint, some blessed pair we make. Ricardo attempts to feed me with his fingers. I appreciate his attentiveness. I really do, but I can see spots of dirt on his fingers, which kills my appetite. I thank him and Hafza bint Yazid and join Caterina by the windowsill. Marco, the other twin, and Alfonso, sit on the couches with Hafza bint Yazid’s children, where they are joined by pitiful Ricardo, who shares with them the Ottoman grub: feta cheese, bread, olives, tomato cubes, cucumber slices, and two baked cods marinated in lemon and olive oil, sprinkled with grated kefalotiri cheese. It doesn’t seem to worry the boys at all that they are probably eating the Ottoman family’s dinner, especially Alfonso, whose father, Agostino Gardenidis, owns twenty-three merchant ships. Alfonso eats with a ravenous delight, dipping his fingers into cod, tearing pieces out of it, mixing them with cheese and tomato cubes, stuffing them in his mouth, and then following them with an olive and two or more cucumber slices. He spits the olive seed while his mouth is still full, then gulps down some fresh water to help him chew and swallow. The commotion still rages outside. From the comfort of the windowpane, I can now see without getting trampled down. It certainly looks as though everyone from port has gathered onto the path that leads up to the village. Most of them weren’t present during service which leads me to assume that everyone at Church is still waiting on the terrace for the streets to clear. Men and women are shouting. Their voices are loud with fear. Caterina looks at me. “It isn’t Martin Luther? Please tell me the Protestant revolution hasn’t come to Corfu. We’re struggling with Catholicism as it is.” Hafza bint Yazid’s nine-year-old girl, who materializes between me and my fifteenyear-old friend says, “No. It’s the wild mare.” Her mother tells her to quiet down and to run along to her room. “Why? What’s the wild mare?” I ask, intrigued. The thirteen-year-old Ottoman grabs his little sister by the ear and pulls her up the creaking steps to their bedroom. The other boys cheer him on, suggesting the use of objects to discipline her or they would interfere themselves. Hafza bint Yazid clears the table in silence. But thankfully, the “wild mare” phrase does not pass by Alfonso, who sucks on his index and middle fingers, then licks the back of his hand and gets up. Hafza bint Yazid offers him one of the wet towels she used to treat my swoon, and he rubs his hands with it before tossing it on the table—that she had just cleaned—and peers through our window. His breath smells like fish and vegetables. “The wild mare, huh?” Caterina’s face is love struck. Oblivious to the rancidity of his mouth, she asks, “What wild mare?” Alfonso turns to the Ottoman kids, his voice thick with authority, his back straight. “What happened to the slave?” The boys toss one another side glances. Their mother stops moving as if petrified. “It’s all right, you can tell me. I won’t say anything.” The boys look to their mother for confirmation before gushing out all the details, like they were in the middle of the narration when we came in, forcing them to stop and keep the story to themselves. The two boys talk at once, completing each

Acting Up The title of this month’s very interesting book, might not strike any kind of interest in most regular readers, but to know that it was called Pride, Prejudice & Jasmin Field (2001), strikes all kinds of feelings of everyone who knew about Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth love story. However, to sort of set a different feel to it, it was renamed and republished under Acting Up (2003) by author Melissa Nathan, one of my favorite English writers. The story takes place in England in recent times, talks about the very smart and funny Jasmin Field; an up and coming journalist/ theatre actress. She comes from a family where she has two other sisters, one a very well-known actress and the other one the picture perfect happily married woman and mother. Jazz or Jasmin started her journalism career by writing a column from one of London’s most famous magazines about the flawless life of her family, in particular her married sister, who seems to have it all together, her marriage, her motherhood. For fun she goes along with her actress sister and her roommate to a Pride & Prejudice, Jazz told herself she was doing it for the “research” because all of London’s famous people will be attending that play but, was that really the reason? To her surprise, she gets casted along with her roommate and her sister in the play, by the infamous Harry Noble; a young, talented heartthrob, very successful actor who made into Hollywood recently and even won an Oscar. Harry was directing this play which was scheduled to be performed only one night for the benefit of Cancer patients. When Harry met Jazz, it was hate at first sight; little did they know what life really held for them and that there is only a fine line between love and hate. After Jazz gets casted for the role of Elizabeth, her life starts to get pulled into different directions, by different forces, some from her own doing, others not. The lovely author recaptures the

Author Melissa Nathan was a talented writer in the early 2000s but before that, much like our Jasmin Field, she was a journalist and a keen actress, she was diagnosed with Cancer after her first novel, but she refused to give in to the illness and she continued writing until she passed away, leaving behind her five very great novels, titles including The Nanny (2001) and Persuading Annie (2004). This novel is going to make you laugh, it’s going to make you cry, and you will experience all sorts of emotions, all in only a few hundred pages.

The funeral of Charles Henry Topping on Manhattan’s Upper East Side would have been a minor affair (his two-hundred-word obit in The New York Times notwithstanding) but for the presence of one particular mourner: the notoriously reclusive author A. N. Dyer, whose novel Ampersand stands as a classic of American teenage angst.
The complex, deeply binding relationship between mothers and daughters is brought vividly to life in Katie Hafner’s remarkable memoir, an exploration of the year she and her mother, Helen, spent working through, and triumphing over, a lifetime of unresolved emotions. Dreaming of a “year in Provence” with her mother, Katie urges Helen to move to San Francisco to live with her and Zoë, Katie’s teenage daughter.
The Hundred Dresses
After Her
The dress is the last bit of femininity in our closets; it's the only item of clothing which (most) men and women don't share. Wearing a dress is a powerful way for women to express themselves--and every style conveys a different message. Inspired by the Eleanor Estes' children's classic The Hundred Dresses, Erin McKean's classic-to-be by the same title, with chic illustrations by Donna Mehalko, is a definitive look at the dresses, vintage and modern, that make an inarguable statement about the woman who wears them.
Joyce Maynard brings a thriller with complex comingof-age relationships to readers in After Her. After Her is the story of two sisters whose father is a well known detective who loves women. When he fails to find out who is committing a string of murders, his daughter tries to lure the killer to herself in order to help her father.
The People in the Trees
Archangel
This debut novel is about a scientist who finds the secret to longevity on a Micronesian island. There is a dark side to his discovery, though, that he doesn't find out until too late. He returns to the island several times and adopts many children from there who he is later accused of abusing.
Archangel is a collection of short stories from National Book Awardwinner Andrea Barrett. Barrett moves over time and scientific discovery in five fact-filled short stories about science and characters involved in the passion and politics surrounding progress.
The Glass Ocean
The Good Lord Bird
The Glass Ocean is a debut novel that takes place in Victorian England. This is a story of love and art, narrated by a woman about her parents.
James McBride, author of Song Yet Sung, returns with a novel about a boy named Henry who was born a slave in Kansas in 1857. When abolitionist John Brown comes to town and gets in a violent fight with Henry's master, Henry flees with him. Brown, however, believes Henry is a girl since he has disguised himself.

Love that never stops growing
Nadia Al-hassan is a student in Ireland, studying Journalism. She is passionate about writing stories and poetry. Nadia loves helping people with her stories. She believes that words are so beautiful and powerful.
Love grows. As I sat in the café, in a hospital, watching people pass me by, I went deep in thought, love was such a beautiful thing and it came in many forms. This old woman pushing a man in a wheelchair came to sit next to me, her husband was a very ill man and incapable of looking after himself. His wife started to feed him with her own hands, doing everything she could to help him. He looked up at her with a smile on his face and you could see the love that he had for her in his eyes, my heart grew with hope that love was truly out there for everybody. She was an old woman, in her seventies but her age didn’t stop her from helping her husband, she pushed him everywhere in the wheelchair, she fed him, she clothed him and she never let him out of her sight. He grabbed her hand and squeezed it tightly and for a few minutes they sat in silence while they just watched each other. She turned to me and gave me a warm smile, I felt really bad for just staring at them but I couldn’t help it, they were such a beautiful couple. “Hi, my name is Nora,’ she said as she put her hand out to greet me. We started to chat and she told me all about her husband’s illness that left him paralyzed from his waist down and he could no longer talk. “At first it was hard, I didn’t know how I was going to look after him all on my own and it broke my heart seeing him in so much pain, I was scared, I thought I would lose him. But he was always a fighter and my love for him kept growing, it never stopped and it never will.” She turned to her husband and planted a kiss on his cheek. The love they had was something so special and after 50 years, their love was still going strong for each other. “Do you ever miss how he was before he got sick, when he could walk and talk?” I asked quite shyly, aware that perhaps the question was too personal. She laughed and shook her head. “He is still the same man that I fell in love with, I don’t need to hear him talk to know what he is thinking, after all these years of being with him, I know him very well. I know he loves me without him telling me, he shows me it. He protected me throughout all these years, bought food to the table and worked hard to bring money home for me and our children. Now it is my turn to look after him, he means the world to me.” A single tear fell from my eye, I ached for a love like that. It was time for them to leave so we said our goodbyes and as they were about to go, her husband put his hands out to hug his wife. She let out a giggle and blushed, it was as if she was a teenager all over again. She then pushed him in the wheelchair while waving me goodbye. A love so beautiful and never stops growing is truly something everybody should have and I went home that day with a smile on my face. August 2013

You couldn’t have possibly missed the sky blue caged bootie type sandals that styled few of the enchanted garments at Zuhair Murad Haute Couture Autumn 2013. A contemporary twist added with care to a spectacle of glamour.
Inspired by kinetic art, Karl Lagerfeld’s collection for Chanel was accessorized with a beautiful display of low heeled boots. Amongst them, delicate pairs of silver booties hitting the ankle, were made out of embroidered translucent tulle.

VERBENA(S) BY L’OCCITANE, PERFUMER IN PROVENCE

REMY MARGIELA, a producer of fragrant plants, has given these plants the very best of his terroir –HIS LAND. They grow in a protected plot at the heart of an organically farmed estate, where the soil is rich. The plants are watered and attended to daily to prevent competition from the wild grasses. Tips for looking your best “Beauty comes from within” we all know that but we got to admit that it isn’t the first thing people notice, personality does make a person look beautiful but it’s always great to look healthy and pretty too! & Skin is one of the most important things that we must take care of to look healthy & beautiful specially in summer since it gets so hot in Kuwait which dries out the skin so badly (literary you can cook eggs in this 50 degrees we got) I mean can you imagine what it does to your skin?! specially that almost all of us girls or guys we love tanning in summer which is another reason to try to protect our skins even more! Have you ever felt like your skin is suddenly so dry or oily, sudden appearance of dark spots or dark eye circle and a strange appearance of pimples and when it happens what do you do? Well most of the people I know always jumps into the conclusion that the skincare product they are using is the reason, but it isn’t always the problem, the real reason is that we must eat healthy and have a healthy life style to nurture our skin from the inside first then add all the other skincare products, skin is a reflection of your health and life style. So here are some tips of how to do that and if you do keep on doing them you will see a difference within 2 to 3 weeks. What to eat? Whole grains: contains Rutin & B vitamins, helps clear and moisturize skin. Nuts: contained Vitamin E, keeps skin young

exfoliate and use the right moisturizer for your skin every night! Some girls skip this part which is really important! WEAR SUNSCREEN! It’ll prevent skin damage and
early wrinkles; especially with our strong sun we shouldn’t skip this part! EXERCISE! It won’t only burn calories but it’ll help
deliver oxygen and nutrients to your skin.

Summer Skin We all know how badly our skin gets effected by sun rays.
by:
Most of our customers like to make tan specially in summer season. The weather in Kuwait is very hot to avoid any kind of burns we advice only to expose to the direct sun in the morning hours between 8am to 11:30am and from 4pm to 7pm. Exposition for 20 minutes to the sun rays is enough to obtain a natural tan without skin burns. The phenomena of the Melanogenease need 20 minutes to provoke the skin tan (bronzing). Long duration provoke redness which stays for 3 to 4 days caused by infrared rays. We can apply a sun protection product starting from SPF (Sun Protection Factors) 18 up to sun block for face over SPF 30. We should repeat the application every 2 hours or after shower.

men’s textured front hairstyle As far as men’s hairstyle trends go, things don’t move all that fast. Short sides and longer on top has been in for a while now, with men’s hair steering clear of anything too spiked or heavy on product and leaning towards more natural yet textured styles. For spring 2014, Z Zegna’s runway show gave us one such textured look that borders modern and classic, with a pulledforwards wave and short sides. We couldn’t help but love this men’s hairstyle, which is why we want to show you how to recreate this look.
90
citypageskuwait.com
Before anything else you need to have a haircut that’s similar to that of the models in the Z Zegna show. A short trip to your hairstylist will do the trick. Just keep in mind that the sides should be short (your stylist can do this by using scissors over a comb or with a clipper guard in number 2 or 3) with the top section in a longer, disconnected length. Once you have the right haircut, it’ll be easier for you to style your hair.
1.
Start off by applying sea salt spray onto your hair then dry it off. This will give your hair the texture it needs.
2.
At the front hair line, take a horizontal section and spray it with a workable hairspray (something not too sticky or shiny will do). This will hold your hair style.
BEAUTY
3.
Using straightening irons straighten first section you just sprayed with hairspray down.
4.
Take the next horizontal section but this time straighten it upward. Continue alternating like this to each horizontal section that follows.
Variations: afro hair.
For curly or afro styling, do the same steps but skip the straightening iron. Just slightly comb each section of your hair. Be careful not to overdo is so your hair doesn’t frizz too much. Texture can do wonders for you especially when it comes to your hairstyle. Gone are the days when men had a standard haircut, today, guys are free to try out different styles. As daunting a task it may seem, it has it benefits, after all, who doesn’t want to look good?
5.
Once you reach the crown and finished straightening technique, take a matte wax or clay to put fix your hairstyle into place. Rub it through your hands to warm it up and make pliable. Make your hands (with the wax) go through your hair and work it from left to right. To get the height in the top sections, use your finger tips to pull your hair upward.

Shelby Mustang GT500 Super Venom
A new embodiment of the word evil in cars has been released, and this time, in the form of a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 created by Anderson Germany. We’ve seen other cars from Anderson Germany such as this Bentley Continental GT that was revealed back in March. The German tuning shop has labeled their modified GT500 as the Super Venom Edition and has changed the looks of the exterior. One of the main design modifications that Anderson Germany has made to the car is that they’ve given it a new body kit. This body kit adds some new tailpipes, a new spoiler, and some vents and scoops on the sides. Anderson Germany has also repainted the car using opaque black paint with red stripes and also added several red cobra badges. The same black and red color scheme has been brought to the interior of the car. Black makes up the main color of the interior while red is saved for the stitching, piping, and for the stripes that travel along the seats and doors. Carbon fibre trim has also been added to replace the car’s standard trim appearing on places such as the dashboard and the seats.

The interior incorporates a tailor-made two tone leather cabin featuring diamond pattern stitched black and white leather on the seats, door trim, steering wheel and dashboard. Additionally, Anderson Germany fitted a selection of new carbon fiber inserts such as those on the door trims as well as the centre console. Moving to the performance realm, the Special Grey Stone Edition by Anderson Germany includes a controllable exhaust system with sports catalytic converters, a tuned ECU, free-flow air filters and larger pulleys. All of these engine changes culminate in an insane 670hp, a 49hp increase from stock, as well as 780lb-ft of torque! Consequently, the Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG Special Grey Stone Edition by Anderson Germany should be capable of hitting 62mph in around 4 seconds and a top speed nearing or surpassing 190mph!

adidas continues the BOOST™ revolution Since its introduction to the world at a global launch event in New York City early in 2013, the Energy Boost running shoe has revolutionised the running world. Featuring the groundbreaking cushioning technology BOOST™, which provides the highest energy return in the running industry, it has set a new benchmark for adidas running footwear, was honoured with the Runner’s World 2013 Best Debut award and, in its first appearance at a global marathon, BOOST™ took home the crown in Tokyo. And this was just the beginning. Now, BOOST™ is being rolled out to more adidas running products and colours. In addition to the Energy Boost franchise, which will come in four colourways for both men and women, BOOST™ cushioning is now also available in adistar and adizero running footwear. In fact, BOOST™ foam will replace the common EVA material in all adidas running performance shoes by 2015. The key to the BOOST™ innovation lies in thousands of small energy capsules which make up the footwear’s distinctive midsole. With their unique cell structure, these capsules store and unleash energy more efficiently in every stride. As a result, BOOST™ at last combines the previously contradicting performance benefits of soft cushioning and responsiveness to give runners a running experience unlike any other. The revolutionary cushioning material also maintains its performance in almost any conditions, at unparalleled levels and over hundreds of kilometres.

Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin: a vision of the future with the AMVOX7 Chronograph The eighth anniversary of the partnership concluded between Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin is being celebrated with the presentation of the AMVOX7, the first vertical-trigger chronograph equipped with a radial power-reserve display. Developed by the Manufacture from the Vallée de Joux, the AMVOX line has for almost a decade been appealing as much to devotees of fine watchmaking as to motor sports fans. The AMVOX7 Chronograph displays the signature characteristics of an iconic collection within a new case featuring an even more ergonomic shape, and testifies to the avant-garde spirit of an alliance entirely dedicated to aesthetic and technical innovation, inspired by the prestigious British car maker. Before inviting closer inspection, the AMVOX7 Chronograph immediately draws the gaze to the motif adorning its dial and featuring the pattern of the radiator grille of the Vanquish, the brand-new model unveiled by Aston Martin last June. Nonetheless, this obvious similarity served as a background canvas against which to undertake formal research entirely in tune with the technical characteristics of the watch. The Jaeger-LeCoultre watchmakers and artisans have devoted particular care to creating refined decorations. The diversity of the finishes enhancing the various surfaces lends remarkable visual depth to a black dial with anthracite grey counters featuring red and white accents ensuring optimal readability. A new function makes its entry into the AMVOX line: the radial power-reserve display. On the AMVOX7 Chronograph, this indication appears through two apertures in the upper part of the inner bezel ring, on either side of the black dial.

For the Spring/Summer season, what’s polished and feminine will remain timeless classics. REGULARS
Horoscopes There's a reason they call August the hottest month! Your creativity peaks as a Leo New Moon illuminates your life on August 6 and helps fan the flames of stagnant projects and stale personal relationships. The theme of the Aquarius Full Moon on August 20 is finding a balance between doing things for yourself and for others. The blazing Virgo Sun on August 22 ignites a fire under you to organize your space and analyze others. The temperature skyrockets when scorching Mars enters sizzling Leo on August 27. This fiery combo ensures that you'll spend the rest of the month trying to cool things down.
ARIES
LEO
(March 21 - April 19)
(July 23 - August 22)
There will be tension and confrontations in your home or when you deal with your family this month. Tempers will flare if you're insensitive or overbearing. Avoid the tendency to be bossy and the need to have your own way. On a lighter note, you will have fun with a romantic admirer or your partner. Be charming and flirtatious if there is someone you like. Creativity will be heightened with the Sun and a New Moon in Leo. Co-workers may give you constructive criticism, but you might not be receptive. Experiment and try new things all month.
TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)
This would be an excellent time to plan a family reunion or barbeque with your friends and neighbors. You might get involved in a community event or potluck. The emphasis will be on keeping things warm, inviting, and comfortable. You don't have to serve anything fancy. Comfort food and good conversation will go a long way. You may act like a mother hen, making sure that everyone is relaxed and their needs are met. You'll continue to feel internally anxious and unsettled due to Uranus transiting in Aries. Your love life will be a source of pleasure.
Venus will be in your sign until the middle of the month. If you're involved in art or craft projects, this placement will give you an eye for detail and the patience to work painstakingly. Others will find you charming and attractive. Personal relationships will make you feel good. Saturn will be in your money sector and help you get on top of any outstanding money issues. Getting organized will be your key to success. Career matters will be important. You'll put a lot of energy into getting ahead. You might be shy about promoting yourself, however.
GEMINI
LIBRA (September 23 - October 22)
This might not be an easy month for you. There will be plenty of change. Your ruler Venus will be in the sign of Virgo and your sector of the unconscious. You will take time to reevaluate some of your relationships. Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter will be in Cancer and your career sector and bring the urge to be proactive and promote yourself. However, you might be shy and humble. The spotlight could be uncomfortable. Uranus and Pluto will be opposite and square to your sign, respectively, and will bring chaos in your relationship to your family or partner.
Venus will be at the top of your chart in Virgo this month. You'll deal with routine career tasks and gather information and facts by talking to others. This would be a good time to network, but you might feel a bit awkward doing this. The Sun and a New Moon in Leo will bring a desire to communicate to others, and you'll be very confident and persuasive. You'll have a strong interest in developing your intuitive abilities this month, and you may have visions or strong impressions about others. Read about how to develop your psychic abilities and try the exercises.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19)
Life will seem stressful and chaotic with several planets in Cardinal Signs. Pluto in your sign will be in square to Uranus and opposite transiting Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter. Expect to have power struggles and tension with your partner, family members, and other people in your life or that you come across. Communication and an open mind are the keys to maintaining good relations and avoiding arguments. Venus in Virgo transiting in your work sector will help you create teamwork and encourage others to have a strong work ethic. You'll encourage others to develop their talents, and you may serve as a mentor.
AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18)
A Full Moon in your sign on August 20 will bring the feeling that you're in crisis. There will be unwanted changes and a sense of being out of control and irritable for a few days. This will only be temporary, but it will be disruptive. Neptune in your money sector will mean that you'll be disorganized and find it hard to keep track of financial matters. Try to create a system and you'll cope better. Several planets will move through your work sector in Cancer. This influence will help you better understand your co-workers and be sensitive to their needs.
CANCER
SCORPIO
PISCES
(June 21 - July 22)
(October 23 - November 21)
(March 21 - April 19)
You'll feel strong and knowledgeable this month, with a clear plan for the future. Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter will move through your sign, bringing a proactive and thoughtful approach. You will take action after you've gathered information and have had a chance to think things through. Take calculated risks. Watch your spending this month with the Sun in Leo. You'll be generous to a fault and have expensive tastes. Now more than ever you will need to maintain balance in your relationships. If you have a partner, make sure he or she understands your need for independence and your own activities. citypageskuwait.com
VIRGO (March 21 - April 19)
(May 21 - June 20)
With Mercury, Jupiter, and Mars in Cancer and your money sector this month, pay special attention to your finances. This placement will bring the need to feel more secure. You might decide to invest more for your retirement. Make decisions that you're comfortable with that work in the long term. A party or get-together with relatives or neighbors could be fun and entertaining. Venus in Virgo may bring minor stress regarding decisions about decorating your home. You could be overly concerned with small details, find it hard to make decisions, and fail to see the big picture.
116
The Sun in your sign this month will bring you confidence and charm. Others will respond to your warmth and affection, but try to be sincere. A New Moon in Leo on August 6 will help you build on your strengths and talents for about a month. Venus in Virgo will help you take control of your finances, and you'll seek advice. With Saturn in Scorpio and your sector of family and home, you will have pressing responsibilities that could feel overwhelming. Sacrifices will be made and you will need to be patient in order to cope.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)
Saturn will be in your sign this month and for some time to come. This planet has been causing personal challenges and a sense of restriction and duty. Sacrifices have been made with no expectation of thanks or recognition. Three planets in Cancer will bring the urge for travel, new experiences, and more education. You'll communicate with empathy and sensitivity. A New Moon in Leo on August 6 will help you use charm and persuasiveness to actively promote yourself for the next few weeks. Venus in Virgo brings the tendency to analyze things in detail when conversing with your friends and associates.
You will be sensitive and intuitive again this month, but you might feel overwhelmed by life. Try to regularly find some peace and quiet. This will help bring you balance and calm. Planets transiting in the sign of Cancer and your romance sector will help you be proactive when showing your feelings and asking for what you want. You'll have to feel secure with the other person first, however. You will be charming and warm at work, and others will be willing to help you because of this. You'll be a great motivator and coach to other staff as the month goes on.
