Imagine a glass full of water scooped up from a puddle in a field. If you are looking at that glass what you will see is this: mud swirling around, full of activity and messiness, rather like our daily lives! Now imagine putting that glass of water down and letting it sit for a while, what will happen now? It will clear itself out! The stillness will allow all that dirt to settle down to the bottom of the glass and all you will be able to see is the clear water on top! Now imagine our busy lives as the mud swirling in that cup, and what happens once we sit still? You got it! All that hustle and bustle of our every day life settles down and you are able to see more clearly, just like that cup of water.

In this moment of stillness we allow our brains to adapt to life and to handle all the things we want to do and help us reach the heights we aspire to. So next time you find your self frantically preparing your habitual to-do list, take a minute to pause, take 5-10 breaths, before you go on again.

Being productive is more than constantly working and doing. One thing that many people overlook or forget is that we also need to relax and be still to be productive. In fact, to be the most productive we need to take a few minutes to pause, be still and allow our thoughts to clear out. We need to reflect on where we are and where we want to go and how to get there, but if we do not stop to do all of that then we cannot move to the next level.

-Take some time between your tasks and appointments; -Pause at the breaks between your personal life and work life; -Have a short break when you get your cup of coffee or tea; -Try meditating or try my all personal favorite, Yoga!

What to wear today? Our brains are constantly buzzing with so many thoughts, we get distracted, we loose focus and life is constantly just happening around us. As the single largest preventable cause of illness and premature death, the reasons to quit smoking are countless. Cigarette smoking is responsible for several diseases, such as cancer, long-term respiratory disease and heart disease. But exposure to tobacco has a significant effect on our eyes and vision too.

A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens which causes blurred and decreased vision. Although it often develops as part of the eye’s natural ageing process, smoking doubles the risk factor of cataract development. The risk and severity of cataracts increases the more you smoke. If left untreated, cataracts can eventually lead to complete vision loss. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula, the central area of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. AMD leads to the formation of scotomas, so-called “blind spots”, which severely impair central vision. Although peripheral vision is not affected by AMD, the loss of central vision can hinder daily activities such as reading and driving. Smokers are three times more likely to develop age-related macular degeneration in comparison to non-smokers. Smoking can raise your chances of getting diabetes. It also makes managing diabetes more difficult for those who already have it. Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication associated with diabetes in which the blood vessels that supply the retina are damaged by high blood sugar levels. The damaged blood vessels leak fluid or blood and cause scar tissue growth. As a result the images the retina sends to the brain become distorted. Since tobacco also damages blood vessels, the development of this condition can increase by smoking. People suffering from Dry Eye Syndrome have insufficient amounts of tear film,

which is needed to keep the eyes lubricated and healthy. This lack of tears can lead to eye irritation, scratchy eyes and a burning sensation of the eyes. Tobacco smoke is a known eye irritant that worsens Dry Eye Syndrome, particularly for contact lens wearers. Even second-hand smokers often complain of eye irritation when exposed to cigarette smoke. Smoking during pregnancy, including passive smoking, can potentially harm the unborn child as dangerous toxins are transmitted to the placenta. Children born to women who smoke during pregnancy are more prone to fetal and infant eye disorders such as strabismus (squinting) and underdevelopment of the optic nerve. Premature birth is another common side effect and premature babies are at risk for retinopathy of prematurity, a potentially blinding disease. Nearly every organ in our body is in some way harmed by smoking. Even passive smoking causes the same diseases as active smoking, although at a reduced risk. Unfortunately, public awareness about the risk of eye diseases associated with smoking is relatively low. It’s never too late to quit smoking. Quitting at any age can reduce the risk of many threatening health conditions. Healthy habits ultimately lead to healthy eyes. December 2013

Naughty or Nice?

Let’s Check Twice! Are you struggling to help your little ones get off the naughty list? Wishing for better-behaved children this New Year? Well, wishing won’t make it so, but maybe a few parenting tips will help! This month, BirthKuwait met with Positive Parenting Educator, Dina Khalifa, and asked her how to help us with some of our parenting woes. BirthKuwait: How can we get our children to behave? Dina Khalifa: For many of us, misbehavior is something we cannot digest easily, especially when it comes from our own children. We feel challenged, defied and sometimes maybe even defeated. For years, we have been brought up to believe that it is not acceptable socially to misbehave; to keep in mind what people think of us and to act accordingly. And when we were attacked with questions to why have we done that, most of the time we had no answer; except “Sorry.” And the result could have created individuals struggling with their own self-worth or self-esteem. How many of us ever paused to think why children misbehave in the first place? What is it inviting? What are children trying to tell those around them? I personally

never asked myself these questions until I came across a statement that invited me to stop and think? “A misbehaving child is a discouraged child.” BirthKuwait: Many of us were brought up to believe that misbehavior was a personality trait, that those children were simply stubborn and wouldn’t listen. So you are saying this isn’t the case? Dina Khalifa: No, misbehavior is not a character trait. The fact is, “misbehavior” is the result of a child’s lack of effective communication skills or knowledge of appropriate behavior. This is what we mean when we say that a child is just acting their age. For us to empower our children with good behavior skills, we need to involve them respectfully in matters that will enable them to be responsible decision makers. The more we react to our children as young ones who seem incapable of handling new challenges, the more we actually are to robbing them of opportunities for independency. BirthKuwait: So how do we do that? How do we teach our children to be responsible decision makers? Dina Khalifa: First you have to examine your own motives and behavior as a parent. The better we understand our behavior as well as children’s the more

Rudolf Dreikurs, a child psychiatrist who believed that “A misbehaving child is a discouraged child”, discovered four common traits children adopt when they feel discouraged; referred to as “Mistaken Goals” based on mistaken beliefs about how to achieve belonging and significance. 1. Undue Attention: “I belong only when I have your attention.” 2. Misguided Power: “I belong only when I’m the boss.” 3. Revenge: “I don’t belong but at least I can hurt back.” 4. Assumed Inadequacy: “It is impossible to belong. I give up.” When we choose to rethink things, and try to understand why the misbehavior is happening, we will have better luck connecting with our children. We will become better listeners to their needs and help them feel and achieve significance and belonging. BirthKuwait: Perhaps examining all of these frameworks would be beyond the scope of this article. However, would you share with us one of the most common obstacles to effective positive parenting? Dina Khalifa: Sure. One of the most annoying obstacles that parents may experience when handling misbehavior is Social Pressure. You may be tempted to use punishment as a quick solution to misbehavior just to satisfy the needs of those observing you. I have recently come to terms with handling a misbehavior and social pressure; I simply ignore all those comments being thrown at me. I simply deal with the misbehavior according to my own definition of what my child is trying to tell me. And what we could learn from it. BirthKuwait: Any more tips for struggling parents? Dina Khalifa: Yes. Remember that making amends is one of the best ways to help turn misbehavior into a motivation. Helping children understand that when we make mistakes, we are opening windows for learning. We can start over. And the more mistakes we make, the more opportunities we experience in learning. We all want to feel significant and achieve a sense of belonging in the circle that we are in, whether in our homes, school, or with relatives, friends, colleagues or even our spouses. Children do too. They want to belong, they want to feel significant, and so, we have to break the code. Teach your children to know the value of their own self-worth, to understand their responsibility towards themselves and those around them. And to know that respect is the key to achieving all. “You belong, when you work on becoming an effective contributor to your family and those around you.” December 2013

Fluids Keeping a sick kid hydrated is a constant battle. Kids who often don't eat well when they're sick must be kept well hydrated. If they aren't touching water, try Pedialyte, juice, and even sports drinks.

Some cold and flu remedies for your kids Honey With natural anti-bacterial properties andimmune boosters, honey is nature's medicine. But thankfully, to kids, honey is also nature's candy â&#x20AC;&#x201D; more like a treat than a treatment. For most kids, it's not a stretch to get them to take a spoonful. Honey can, of course, also help sooth a cough or an irritated throat. Honey, however, is only recommended for kids over one year of age. Pain-relievers Paediatricians are leery about giving cough and cold medications to children. In fact, health authorities in many countires recommend that children under six should not use over-the-counter cough and cold medication at all. Experts suggest they werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t working as well in children less than 6 years old as they do in adults. Talk to your pharmacist about these products, and other helpful options for your kids. Anti-inflammatories Similar to pain-relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs can help ease some of the symptoms of a cold or flu, from headaches to fevers. A child who isn't in pain is a lot more likely to cooperate in other efforts to treat their illness. If a child feels better after having [ibuprofen] and that's helping them eat or drink or sleep better, that's a reasonable thing to do. However, pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs shouldn't be a parent's first response. "Low grade fevers aren't harmful,". Parents often worry about temperature and think it can cause seizures and brain damage but we know that fever is part of the way our body responds to infection. But if your child is particularly uncomfortable with a fever, then it's worth trying. Like pain-relievers, anti-inflammatory drugs also come in flavoured chewable and liquid forms. Warm Baths While it won't cure them, a warm bath is a calming way to help soothe a child's aches and pains before bed. Rest There's no question about it: getting sick can wear your little one out. It takes a

Saline Nasal Drops/Sprays If your baby or toddler is having trouble breastfeeding because of a stuffed nose, try using saline nose drops or a saline nose spray to help break down the mucus. This, of course, isn't something they'll be too happy about at first but their attitude is bound to change as soon as they start to feel the results. Lightweight Clothes Managing your child's temperature is especially important when they have the flu. Make sure they're dressed in lightweight clothes that allow their bodies to breathe.

When ceramic veneers are recommended?

Ceramic veneers are mainly recommended to create beautiful attractive smiles by means of straightening teeth with minor mal-alignments, to mask dark discolored root-canal treated teeth, to close spaces between teeth, to make smaller teeth look larger or larger teeth look smaller, as well as they are ideal to repair chipped or worn out teeth. In many cases veneers can be an excellent alternative to the braces.

What does getting Ceramic veneer involve?

The technique is simple. Two visits are usually needed. In the first one, teeth are minimally prepared to receive the thin veneer shells, then accurate measurements of the teeth are done. To insure optimum aesthetic outcome and harmony of the new smile, a precise chair-side 3D shade (color) selection is done. At this stage, patients can state their preferences concerning tooth color, shape and overall smile design. In the second visit, veneers are cemented. In order to insure long term success, special instructions are given to the patient which include proper brushing and flossing techniques. Patients are scheduled for follow ups on regular basis.

Sometimes a break-up with your gym will benefit your body better

And this Christmas, will be, a very special Christmas for me… It’s the last month of 2013 and with the New Year looming by, most of my Kuwaiti clients will be out and about from the country, most probably celebrating the festivities in good ol Londontown (call it a hunch if you will). My piece of advice to them? Take the week off from training. Yes, you heard right. I advocate that my clients take a week or 2 off from training simply to recharge themselves- mentally, spiritually and physically. Look we’re not machines. If you’ve been training steadily throughout the year with hardly any rest in between, your body at some point will tell you it has had enough. As a trainer, I myself at times may be a tad stubborn to heed my own advice cause psychologically, I feel the need to train when simply a short rest period would benefit me better than hitting the gym. Here are some indicators that a rest period may be needed: n

When training feels like a chore rather than an activity you’re looking forward to

You’ve hit a plateau in reaching your fitness goals no matter how hard you train

You’re suddenly besieged with injuries even when executing the simplest exercise

You’re moody, irritable and/or angry at the thought of having to train

You’re tired from start to finish of your workout

You don’t complete your workout, cutting out some exercises in order to flee from training

Getting emotional at the thought of achieving your fitness goal and worse, binge eating in your emotional state

Good ol Arnie (Schwarzenegger that is) once professed, “Bodybuilding is much like any other sport. To be successful, you must dedicate yourself 100% to your training, diet and mental approach.” If you have said yes to any of the indicators above; then really, you’re not giving 100% towards achieving your goals, are you? Perhaps one of the biggest benefits of having time off from the gym is recharging your immune system. A suppressed immune system is one of the major side effects of overtraining. So if you’re constantly hitting the gym and are constantly sick, then yes, it’s time to take a break from training.

Besides having a week off from the gym won’t subject your physique to muscle atrophy. Your body will recharge, repair and recover itself. You should however still maintain your healthy nutritional habits in your time off. Self-help author Stephen Richards states, “Before aligning the mind, body and soul… first one has to straighten their mind out.” Perhaps the biggest benefit of having a time-out from training is recharging your mental willpower. Training 3-4 times a week, 52 weeks a year, can be horribly draining. One needs to look forward to their training sessions. You need to put 150% in when you’re at the gym. If you’re mentally drained, how can you kill it in your workouts if there’s no mind-body connection? Your training facility should be your safe haven where after a hard day’s work, you can emotionally vent via your workouts. The last thing you want to do is be mentally burnt-out and frustrated at the gym. Because instead of positive changes, your gym experience then becomes a negative one.

Eating…. Not to say that this is a guide to the best restaurants or a food guide of Kuwait, by no means do I consider myself an expert in cuisine in Kuwait; however I do find that when I discuss nutrition with people I slowly start to watch their eyes glaze over, from boredom that is! It has become interesting watching people and their eating habits here in Kuwait. You see the young teenage kids hanging out at your local fast food eatery, while your college kids heading to the latest trendy burger/sushi spot, and the older crowd less of a going out for a meal type and more let’s meet for a coffee type of gathering. So what do you do if you’ve got a food allergy or a food intolerance? Simple, you work around the system. Being gluten intolerant, it’s been very difficult adjusting to my new dietary requirements. Gluten, a protein found in most wheat products such as barley, rye, durum, spelt, eikorn, faro, graham, kamut and semolina is more common than we may think. After several months of educating myself on what is required of me to remove this protein from my diet, like everyone else I started to get bored with eating at home and wanted more options. My sweet tooth kicked in and started to make me crave having that sweet piece of cheesecake that I’ve been dreaming of,

but I knew that there would be a consequence to that action, a consequence I’m not willing to accept, so naturally I opted out. That in turn pushed me to venture out and experiment how willing restaurants and chefs are to accommodate my intolerance, and if in fact they had any clue what I was talking about to begin with. And so the journey began. At first, I found that there was much difficulty explaining to the waiters what I was asking, i.e does the soup contain flour? Can I have that tabouleh without the burghul? In some instances I was pleasantly surprised, while in others I was utterly disappointed in what the response was. Two years later, I found that now restaurant owners are more concerned with their client’s health and have spent more time educating their team on how to be more accommodating to people with food intolerances. So when out and about having a healthy meal in Kuwait is now a possibility and not such a far fetched idea! Seeing the emergence of more and more healthy options for going out, its great to see that their numbers have increased only making it more evident that people have decided to take their health into their own hands. I won’t bore you with the details of cholesterol, saturated fats and good quality protein, I can see that your eyes are glazing over already!

State of the Animals 2013

At the beginning of every month, my wife and colleague Ayeshah Al-Humaidhi and I start discussing what subject to write about for our CityPages spread. For December, we decided that 11 months of searching for a topic is quite enough, so for that, and a few other reasons, we have decided to start an annual ‘State of the Animals’ review. Every December, for as long as we write for CityPages, we will conduct this review to give you, our readers, a brief update on the various categories of animals in Kuwait. This will mean good news and bad, but for better or worse, here is your year in review.

Companion Animals

2013 for companion animals in Kuwait has been much the same as the previous couple of years. We continue to see an increase in dog, cat, and bird ownership. Importation of purebred dogs from Eastern European countries continues to rise and in general, purebred animals in Kuwait continue to suffer from a variety of congenital defects stemming from poor genetic diversity. Veterinary care has not seen much change this year and K’S PATH still recommends Royal Animal Hospital as offering the highest and most trustworthy standard of care. Pet services have continued to expand with new grooming, boarding, training, and day care options. Availability and selection of toys, treats, and other accessories continues to improve. K’S PATH Shelter

At our shelter in Wafra this year, as in every year prior, we have seen a steady increase in the number of animals surrendered. Cat adoptions have crept steadily upward while dog adoptions have remained relatively low. We have seen a slight increase in the number of rabbits surrendered and more or less steady numbers of turtles and tortoise.

This year we were able to raise enough money to finally build a permanent stable building for our horses and donkeys. We expect the building to be operational by the beginning of January, 2014.

Animal Control

Our animal control program has seen major set backs this year. Our contract with Saudi Arabian Chevron ended in October and was not renewed with no reason given. This means a year worth of work will be undone within a few months. Additionally, 50% of our contract with Kuwait Oil Company was taken back after our agreed upon method of cat control was rejected for taking too long to resolve the over population problem. That leaves us with only one person and one vehicle to handle all dog and wildlife complaints on 72% of Kuwait’s landmass. We are quickly getting overwhelmed. What began as an effort to design and implement animal control in Kuwait has unraveled this year, and we are not likely to continue this program beyond our current commitment to KOC. Meanwhile, in response to two feral dog attacks upon children this year, the Public Authority for Agriculture and Fish Resources (PAAFR) has commissioned two new programs to control stray dogs. The first is a contract for animal control.

Unfortunately, that program’s budget is less than 30 thousand KD for one year and, by the time the contract had been sent to tender was primarily a labor contract for 9 laborers and several used trucks. The efficacy of the program is questionable, but we hope it might be a first step to a larger, humane dog control program. PAAFR’s other new program was to release land for animal sheltering. The land in question is located in Kebd and cannot have a built area of more than 20% meaning that the dogs must be kept outdoors. PAAFR will not provide any funding at all including for the building itself, and any companies that bid must conduct animal control on their own with no funding and must euthanize ALL dogs within 10 days of capture. Dogs may not be relocated from the shelter site to any other place. These requirements do not coincide with effective sheltering programs around the world, so the purpose of this program and its rigid, inhumane terms is highly questionable.

Native Wildlife

The Abdaliya Nature Preserve in KOC’s Western operations area has been nearly doubled this year, but that project, like the other preserves in Kuwait, continues to be underfunded. Poaching and illegal grazing inside the preserve was a major issue until an anti-vehicle fence could be installed running the entire 20k fence line. Winter camping, severe overgrazing, and poaching continue to be reasons for dire concern in all unprotected areas of Kuwait. Overgrazing is the primary cause of desertification in Kuwait and will continue to contribute to the increasingly severe sand storms we endure throughout the summer. Poaching, particularly of birds, remains prolific throughout much of the Middle East. Experts say migratory routes are changing as a result of massive poaching because birds will begin finding new places to rest during migration. It is still quite common to see several hunters driving around the desert with shotguns shooting quite literally every creature that moves. I have personally observed this practice both in the desert and in densely populated residential neighborhoods. K’S PATH receives several shot eagles per year.

Illegal Wildlife

The trade in illegal wildlife in Kuwait continues, as it does around the world. Globally, the illegal trade in animals and their derived products is a multi-billion dollar industry, third only to drugs and guns. Several months ago the discovery of a lion on the loose in a residential neighborhood resulted in a declaration by authorities that illegal wildlife would be confiscated. It is as of yet unclear if authorities have taken any action, but there are still regular sightings in Kuwait of lions, cheetahs, and baboons, as well as a wide assortment of other animals, in possession as pets. The

K’S PATH sanctuary receives at least two baboons per year, and we would like to remind the public that wildlife is illegal to buy, sell, or own in Kuwait. Kuwait is also a signatory to the CITIES convention and as such is required to provide adequate protections, enforcements, and regulation of wild animals and their products. No such mechanisms are adequately in place at this time.

Farm Animals

Farm animals, as always, are one of the largest bodies of animals in Kuwait (insects and fish both being larger). However, very little is being done in the country to ensure proper standards for health and welfare. Sheep and goats living in desert herds have a very high mortality due to inadequate veterinary care and ingestion of plastics. Chickens live primarily in battery cages for egg layers and in intensive, large group confinement for meat. Natureland eggs are the most notable exception and consumers may find other egg products with labels that are free-range, cagefree or humane, though a label does not necessarily guarantee humane living conditions. Some consumers may have access to eggs produced on private farms that are free range. However, the majority of chickens live in near-total misery in Kuwait, as they do in most countries. Kuwait continues to be one of the largest importers of live animals in the world, taking the form of nearly one million sheep from Western Australia. Sheep coming from pastureland in Western Australia must undergo tremendous suffering including long-distance transport by truck, inadequate veterinary care, up to 5 weeks on a congested ship, long periods in extreme heat, exposure to disease, rough handling, and horrific slaughter practices. None of these elements meet Halal standards or minimum humane standards. Several undercover investigations conducted by the non-profit Animals Australia in the last few years have resulted in tremendous pressure upon Australian authorities to improve standards in the trade. The result of their efforts so far has been to make observing the market much more difficult while in reality changing very little. Our own investigations this year have shown that Australian sheep are still available for sale to individual owners—a key violation of trade agreements. At K’S PATH we recommend a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. For those that are looking for an ethical source of meat, we recommend meats from New Zealand that is exported chilled or frozen. This is your state of the animals for 2013. Kuwait faces tremendous challenges for animals, but K’S PATH is here working hard every day. While the outlook seems bleak on the surface, we who are on the frontlines fighting animal cruelty issues do see progress, albeit slow progress. 5 Tips For Starting Your Projects When you're starting a new project, it can be a confusing time. Everyone is trying to set priorities and get the work moving. It doesn't have to be hard if you follow these...

Tip 1: Develop the Project Charter

The Project Charter is a document that includes high level information about the project including key milestones, an overview of the budget and of course, the aims and objectives of the project. You will be key in preparing the document, but it should be owned by the project sponsor who takes responsibility for the project overall. Oh, and if you haven't already, make the time to meet your project sponsor! Ideally you should work on the Charter together so that you have a common understanding of what is to be done.

Tip 2: Identify Stakeholders

Who is going to be involved on your project? The project initiation phase is the perfect time to identify everyone who will have an input to your project or who can influence the work. The Charter gives you a starting point as it will help you see which areas of the business are going to be affected by the new project. You can also talk to your project sponsor to make sure that you don't miss anyone out.

Tip 4: Check the Business Benefits

Why is this project being done? It's important to understand the benefits and the rationale behind doing this project. Talk to your project sponsor if you aren't sure. Understanding the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;why' will help you explain it to the other team members. You'll find that the team is more motivated if they understand why they are working on something and how it contributes to the business strategy and plans overall. If you can share a common understanding of the project's objectives this is a major step towards getting everyone on board.

Tip 5: Get started!

The next thing you need to do is to get some team members to work with! Think about the skills you will need in order to be able to complete the different project tasks. Most projects need a variety of different skills from subject matter experts. Then match these requirements to the skills of the available individuals and put together your team.

Now the preparation work is complete, you can get started working with your team and putting together your project schedule. Create a list of all the tasks that need to be done (with input from your team) and then add dates and milestones to form your schedule. You can then allocate tasks to the people who will be doing the work and instruct everyone to get started! Remember to set up your processes for monitoring and controlling the project work too so that you can keep on top of project status at any time.

If you don't know how to start selecting suitable candidates you can ask other project managers or line managers for their advice about who would be able to contribute to the project.

Starting a new project can be a hectic time. However, it doesn't have to be difficult. If you are clear about the roles and responsibilities of the project manager during this time, you can start your project off perfectly.

Feeling Homesick When we go to school, we are taught how to read, and write. When we fall and get injured, we go to the doctor to get healed. When we want to relax, we usually go to the spa or take a nap. Its funny how every feeling we go through or stage in life there is a solution, but what about when you miss your family? How do you deal with that? Life doesn’t give us an instruction book on how to stop missing your family. There are no steps or rules when it comes to family. As a student that studies abroad, living alone has been one of the hardest decisions I have ever made in my life. As much as I wanted to pursue my goals and leave home, part of me could never adjust to the fact that I will wake up in the morning not hearing the sound of my dad telling me to pray or my mom telling me not to leave home without breakfast. Or listening to my younger siblings arguing. However, I have found ways to help make it easier.

1. Home is where the family is:

I strongly agree wherever family is this where home is, the love, the care, the strength and safety. Home is a feeling and not a building. We live in a world full of technology ! Download all the apps that you need to contact them easily. While walking to university call one of your family members, through Tango, Viber, or Skype!

2. Feel comfy:

The way I lift up my spirit is through shopping and decorating! Treat yourself every once in a while, you are not gone forever, you are here for a reason, to get a degree and to make your family proud. Go to the mall , treat yourself with a new

pair of shoes! And go to the home décor section and start getting some items for your apartment. The more comfy and cozy your place looks the more you will start adjusting to your place as yours.

3. Pray and Have Faith:

Sometimes it gets so hard I know, I have been there, and I wouldn’t call any of my family members because I don’t want them to feel bad, worried, or ruin their day. Whenever my dad visits me, we would usually have a long talk the day before he leaves, and he would always say for you to contact us you would have to use viber, tango, skype, and you would have to see if we are free and check the time difference. But Allah is always there for you, 24/7, you don’t need a specific timing. So just whatever you go through, pray and have faith. Having faith takes you to places you would never imagine.

4. Socialize:

Surround yourself with people whether they are from back home, or from your own course, get to know different cultures, by socializing you will start to develop a life here and have your own zone.

5. Occupy yourself:

Don’t fill your head with negative thoughts, and don’t remind yourself about the distance and how lonely it gets, instead develop a routine where it helps you to take your mind off of things. Go to the gym. Start a studying schedule, discover your town, travel! I hope that these points can help you somehow, or give you an idea of how you can adjust yourself December 2013

Since childhood he had interest in Art, which became easy for him to choose his career. Khuram belong to Pakistani family being resident in Kuwait since 50 years. Started early education in Kuwait and later did his graduation in Architecture from Lahore, Pakistan, and now pursuing his master’s degree in Architecture Project Management. He has a passion for Architecture and Interior which made him to do a few interior and graphic design courses.

I am French and a pure product from Paris; I was born and raised in Paris so I love to say “ I am Parisian” before saying I am French. I have 14 years’ experience in fashion and enjoying my job in Kuwait.

How long have you been working with Givenchy? It has been a year now! It feels like I joined the Kuwait team yesterday! It goes so quickly! Every day is a new adventure.

What it's like to work with Givenchy? It feels like I am on a voyage everyday with lots of surprises! I love discovering the new collections and Givenchy Kuwait is always seeking to choose every piece that Kuwait will love! I feel very lucky to be part of the Givenchy Journey. ASSAD KHAN CEO & Founder Bubbleology Ltd. As far as career changes go, leaving the equities trading floor at JP Morgan for a Taiwanese tea café is quite a drastic move. But founder Assad Khan clearly believed bubble tea – a tea-based soft drink made with chewy tapioca balls – had a bright future in the UK. So far, his instincts have been proved correct and just three months after opening Bubbleology’s first bubble tea café, in Soho, in mid-Spring of 2011, he launched a café concession in Harvey Nichols and a branch in Notting Hill the next year. Assad was in Kuwait for the launch of his first Bubbleology store in Kuwait. CityPages had the opportunity to meet with him and know more about him and his passion for bubble tea.

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO OUR READERS I’m a former Investment Banker, having spent an eight year career at JP Morgan on the Equities Trading floor, both in London and New York. I left Investment Banking in 2010 to launch Bubbleology. WHAT EXACTLY IS BUBBLE TEA? It is fruit flavoured Tea, with Tapioca balls inside, which are sucked up through a fat straw. The Tapioca is chewy, almost like a flavoured gummy bear, with the tea being fresh Jasmine or Assam. HOW DID YOU FIRST COME ACROSS BUBBLE TEA? It was in 2005 when I first went to New York as part of a JP Morgan secondment. As soon as I drank it, I knew straight away that there was an opportunity to create a Global Premium brand that consumers from across cultures could identify with. WHERE DID THE PHENOMENON BEGIN AND HOW DID IT BECOME SO BIG? The drink originated in Taiwan in the 1980’s, and quickly took hold across the country. In the late 1980’s it spread across the rest of Asia, and in the 1990’s the drink went to North America and Australia. The popularity of the drink is in it’s combined drinking and chewing, and it’s new and exciting take on Tea – we call it the Teavolution ! WHERE AND WHEN DID YOU OPEN THE FIRST BUBLEOLOGY STORE? Our first store opened in April 2011, in one of Londons most famous, trend setting destinations – Soho. Due to its location and reputation as one of the city’s most fashionable crowds, it was a choice we thought would fit the brand perfectly. HOW WAS THE RESPONSE INITIALLY? The initial response was tremendous! We sold over 8000 drinks within the first two weeks after our grand opening, attended by the Taiwanese Ambassador. We have 14 flavours, in addition to specials, hot or cold, which can be mixed with each other in any number of combinations that the consumer would like. In addition, each of these drinks can be mixed with popping boba (flavoured balls that explode in the mouth), as well as other jellies. With the different flavours and jellies, the number of potential drink combinations counts in the tens of thousands ! In terms of most popular, it really depends on the country. In Europe, the most popular flavours are taro and passion fruit. However, in Kuwait, we have found that honeydew and strawberries & cream are quite popular, in addition to passion fruit. WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE OF INTRODUCING A NEW FLAVOUR? We like to respond to what our customers want. If there is a sudden call for a certain flavor, we will try our best to eventually introduce it. Our team of Bubbleologists love to concoct new recipes! HOW WAS THE CONCEPT FOR KUWAIT'S STORE INITIATED? We wanted to give Kuwaitis the authentic cult experience of Bubbleology, and so the design, look and feel share the same Brand DNA as the original London units. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FROM THE INITIALL DISCUSSIONS TO THE OPENING OF THE STORE? About 18 months, which is longer than the norm. But this was an intentional strategy, as the initial focus

opening in Czech Rep, Slovak Rep, Switzerland, and Russia first. WAS ANY RESEARCH CONDUCTED FOR KUWAIT BEFORE THE STORE WAS OPENED? Naturally there was plenty of research into the local Kuwaiti market, but what really gave us an indication of the success of Bubbleology in Kuwait was the Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge shop. We have many Kuwaitis visit Bubbleology at Harvey Nichols, where a lot of customers asked the –“When will you open in Kuwait?” – this validated our research. HOW MANY STORES CURRENTLY OPERATE AND WHERE ALL? We currently have 35 stores open worldwide operating in seven countries, with plans to increase to 100 within 12 months. We are set to expand into multiple new territories around the Middle East and South America. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE INITIAL RESPONSE FROM KUWAIT? Baking Tips And Tricks

For The Holiday Season Hello Loyal Readers The Holiday season is just around the corner. People all over the world share festive moments with family, friends and colleagues, which basically comes down to eating lots and lots of food especially baked goods. And by baked, I don’t mean ‘healthy’. On the contrary the complete opposite. Even though baking is considered a healthy cooking technique, when our favourite cookie or cake recipe calls for butter, white sugar, heavy cream, chocolate, white flour etc., it all adds up when you stand on your bathroom scale at the end of the holiday season. I am well aware that it can be tricky celebrating the holidays without your favourite baked goods. However you can enjoy these treats by swapping unhealthy ingredients with healthier ones. These are some of the swaps I often use while baking.

1. Butter/Margarine for Apple sauce: If a recipe calls for 1 cup Butter, I replace half the amount of butter with unsweetened apple sauce. So instead of 1 cup butter I will use ½ cup butter + ½ cup Apple sauce. 1 cup butter = 1600 calories vs 1 cup Apple sauce = 100 calories. This works well for making banana bread or other cake-like recipes without having to compromising the texture or flavour. 2. Butter/Margarine for Canola oil: if a recipe calls for melted butter, you may swap it for canola oil. For every 1 cup of butter, use 10 tablespoon Oil. This swap helps cut down on salt, saturated fat and

cholesterol. I have done this when making cookies and works perfectly. 3. Butter/Margarine for Greek Yoghurt: I have previously added Greek yoghurt to a cake-like recipe. I am able to half the amount of butter that recipe calls for by swapping it with Greek yoghurt. So for instance, instead of 1 cup butter I would use 1/4 cup Greek yoghurt and 1/2 cup butter. Greek yoghurt is not only high in protein, but it lower in sodium and calories (3/4 cup of greek yoghurt has 100 calories). 4. Cream Cheese (full fat) for Cream cheese (Fat free). I use Philadelphia fat free cream cheese.

300gm full fat cream cheese = 740 calories vs. 300 calories in fat free cream cheese. 5. Full cream milk for Low fat milk / Almond milk / Soy milk. Replace the exact amount. Swap 1 cup full cream milk with 1 cup low fat milk or almond milk (unsweetened version). 6. White Sugar for artificial sweetener / maple syrup / stevia: If a recipe calls for 1 cup sugar, I go with 1/2 cup brown sugar and add zero- calorie sweeter to adjust. Or you also get the Splenda/Brown sugar blend at your supermarket which is half the calories vs. 1 cup Brown sugar. Adding a little vanilla essence or cinnamon also goes a long way to satisfy that sweet tooth minus

the calories. If you can get your hands on Authentic Maple syrup, that works well (but watch the calories). Alternatively you can also use stevia which is an all natural sweetener and is great if you want a zero calorie sweetener. 7. Unsweetened chocolate chip: I just watch my portions here, Instead of using 1 cup I use Â˝ cup. When I was living in Australia I was able to get my hands on cacao nibs which work perfectly. There are a few online stores in kuwait that supply cacao powder. 8. White flour for oatmeal flour/ whole wheat flour: If a recipe calls for 1 cup white flour, I would use 3/4 cup whole wheat flour and 1/2 cup white flour or I would use 3/4 cup oatmeal flour and 1/2 cup white flour. This helps to boost the fibre of the recipe while cutting down on the processed ingredients. Almond flour also works well on its own if you want a gluten free option. 9. Heavy Cream for evaporated milk: 1 cup heavy cream has 821 calories while evaporated milk has 338 calories. 10. Chia seeds instead of eggs: Soak 1 tablespoon chia seeds in 3 tablespoon water for 10 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 15 minutes until it forms into a gel. Use it in place of 1 egg. This not only bumps up the fibre but is also super rich in calcium and magnesium

I am a managing director of Metal Products Company. I graduated in Business marketing, I’ve worked for more than 10 years in the financial world before joining the family business. My hobbies are playing drums, composing music and playing sports. Tell us about your educational background? I Graduated High school from AIS, went to the USA to pursue my studies in business. I obtained my Bachelors degree of science in marketing from Arizona State University in the year 2000. What motivated you to move into Finance after graduating in Marketing? While I was studying at ASU one of my internship classes was working at Merrill Lynch. I really enjoyed working in the financial environment, so I tried to seek different opportunities to get into the financial world. Tell us about your work experience? After leaving the states and coming back home, I joined Kuwait Investment Authority’s (KIA) Training program, which lasted for a year and a half. It’s pretty much equivalent to taking your master in finance. At the same time I had worked as an intern with Goldman Sachs, a top leading international financial company in London UK. After finishing the program from KIA, I got the opportunity to work with one of the leading financial companies in Kuwait. You have 10 intensive years of experience in finance field in Kuwait? Yes, I have joined several financial companies for the last 10 years and I must say it was one hell of a ride. I started working in the asset management department and focused on the local stock market as a portfolio manager, and eventually moved up to a fund manager. I have experienced the best of two worlds which is the peak of the market in 2005 to 2007 and the shocking crash of 2009 which I believe we are still trying to recover from.

What made you decide to take over your family business eventually? Having a family business is a blessing and it is just one of those things that you need to eventually catch up “the train” with. It was the perfect time for me to join the business, especially having some corporate experience and knowing that the company is growing bigger. What is the main difference working for other companies and managing your own family business? The main difference is family business is your own asset and you have a huge responsibility to nourish it and to make it grow. It is a lot of hard work and tons of stress. On the other hand, working for a company is a fun environment, but you can only grow so much. What is your family business? Please tell us more about it. Metal Products Company is a manufacture located in sabhan and we produce Aluminum and Galvanized steel profiles for ceiling and partition systems. We also produce gysum and metal ceiling for commercial buildings. Our production lines are based on American and European standards. So in a nutshell all the walls and ceilings that interior designers need we got. What are your hobbies and do you get any time for them? My main hobby is playing music which I do every day and I also like to play some sports whenever I can with friends. I get to know that you like to play music? What instrument do you play? I started playing drums when I was 6 years old and after so many years, I learn to play guitar, bass, and some piano. I play with friends every week to release all the stress we get from work. The style that we play is rock n roll and boy does it sound good!

What is your favorite travel destination and why? My favorite place to travel is California, because the weather is perfect the place is stunning and my kids bug me to take them to Disneyland, universal and the whole nine yards. Who has been your greatest inspiration as a leader? I know that this might sound a little corny but my parents are my greatest inspiration. I have learned a lot from them and hopefully could pass it on to my kids. How can a qualified and charismatic impact the organization according to you?

Motivation and aspiration are one of the driven factors to push you to excel and work hard to grow a company. Also being organized and setting up goals, positively impacts the performance of the company. What are your keys to success? Dare yourself, use your will, Determination, Excellence, Vision and this should reach to success. What are your future plans for your company? My plans for the company is to continue to grow locally and internationally and be very aggressive in our sector. I also wanted to get into the food and beverages business which might happen pretty soon.

Your advise do you have the aspiring new students entering the field of marketing or business? I really recommend them to learn as much as they can from their work environment and for them to have a strong goal to accomplish. These days the work environment is just getting harder and more challenging to everyone. Also I recommend them to try to choose a job that they are interested in versus just having a job. We Are What Others Smell Has it ever come to your mind what do we really smell like after wearing our own perfume? We tend to have a certain image of our favorite essence and how it may feel like when it hits the others, especially when after it reacts with the skin. Other people may not like rich smell, claiming that it gets disturbing and sometimes allergic, and prefer something light. In other words it differs from one to another. Seriously thoughâ&#x20AC;Ś Your friends or family can tells you about your smell, knowing that your smell can be a tricky thing! For that reason we live with ourselves and our nose is very fast adapted to our own odor. So far, if other people are suggesting that you're a bid odorous, or you're simply worried that you might be, fixing it out for yourself needs some thought about your usual habits and cleanliness practices. Therefore, it is better to smell your clothes after removing them. Take a break first having a

shower or watching TV, then gather the clothes and give them a sniff, especially around anywhere you sweat profusely. If you find an odor that is unlikable, then that may be an indicator that you have a body odor problem that is leaching into your clothing. Our own odor can be augmented by the fabric of materials we wear, with non breathable clothes (manufactured with synthetics fabrics) being at the top of the list for enhancing bad odors. And stinky clothing always needs immediate wash.

Here are some good tips for a day fulfilled with beautiful smell sprouting from you: Spray the perfume(s) you like onto a clean towel that you are planning to dry yourself with n Wear your perfume on your wrists and the back of your neck, then on your clothes that you are wearing n Apply body lotion n Wear your clean clothes n Use Bakhoor (smoke perfume) on your clothes n Carry gum n

Finally, make sure about the parts of your body that most effected with moisture, like anywhere potential for skin folds (between toes, under the armsâ&#x20AC;Śetc.) can be a source of odor if bacteria gets the opportunity to increase. Osama decided to go to America where he studied gemology in one of the highly recognized university in terms of gemology GIA. He obtained 8 diplomas throughout his gemology study itinerary and he was lucky enough to immediately work for a pioneer of jewelry in the Middle-East, Mr. Robert Mouawad in Saudi Arabia. His career at Mouawad lasted for around 5 years during which he learned that passion and ambition are the only ways to succeed in the world of jewelry. He moved after that to Qatar and then to Dubai where he had the chance to work in one of the biggest companies of jewelry and watches --Swatch Group International. Osama was appointed as the Regional Brand Manager for MENA and India region of a unique brand called Leon Hatot, an exclusive diamond brand that made a lot of success. He moved to Kuwait a couple of years ago, where he was once again lucky to work with Kallista Holding Company which is in fact one of the biggest Joailliers in Kuwait and practically amongst few jewelers that have their own factory and make their own designs. DECEMBER BIRTHSTONE IS TURQUOISE Hello Friends! Happy December! Here is a fun little snack of knowledge for you! Especially for your friends with a December Birthday, or a loved one born in December… Turquoise is the accepted birthstone for December and is the accepted anniversary gemstone for the 11th year of marriage. Colors in Turquoise range from sky blue (most desirable color) to blue green and apple green. The name means “Turkish stone” because the trade route that brought it to Europe used to come via Turkey. The best qualities are found in northeast Iran (Persian turquoise). However, the United States southwest is now the world leader in production of Turquoise. Turquoise was found in Siani as early as 4,000 BC. At that time the stone was used for jewelry, amulets and in the preparation of cosmetics. During the 16th century Turquoise was used as currency by the Southwest Indians. They believed the gemstone could bring spoils to the warrior, animals to the hunter, and happiness and good fortune to all. Although large quantities of beautiful untreated Turquoise are readily available, today’s turquoise is commonly stabilized with plastic to improve its color and durability. Chalky varieties of turquoise are normally impregnated with oil or wax to enhance color. This color change may not be permanent. Care should be taken to protect it from scratches, sharp blows, hot water, and household chemicals. To clean your Turquoise jewelry, do not use a home ultrasonic machine. Because of the unique nature of June’s gemstone, Blue Zircon and Tanzanite have become recognized as additional alternatives for the December birthstone, especially for those who prefer faceted stones. Zircon occurs in a wide range of colors, but today the most popular color December’s is Blue Zircon. Most Blue Zircon comes in pastel blue shades, but some exceptional gems have a bright blue color. The other colors of Zircon are green, dark red, yellow, brown, orange, and colorless. Zircon is mainly found in Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Australia. In the middle ages, Zircon was said to aid sleep, bring prosperity, and promote honor and wisdom in its owner. Although Zircon is relatively hard and a heavy stone, extra care should be taken to protect it from scratches and sharp blows. Tanzanite is one of the rarest gemstones and found only in Tanzania. Tanzanite is a more recently discovered gem but has increased in popularity over the past few decades because of it’s beautiful blue hues and purple fire. Some of the less coveted but still beautiful varieties fall in the light violet-blue color range. Tanzanite has become associated known as a gem meant for a prestigious wearer, the perfect gift for the woman who exudes confidence and individuality.

Color, how do we love thee let me count the ways. How many of us wake up on a dreary morning and decide that if we were to throw on something bright, our day may take a turn for the best? How many have stared out onto a blue ocean or marveled at the multi colored skies at susnset and felt in awe and at peace? Well, Wala Al Muhaiteeb will agree one hundred percent, and has marvelously turned the idea of color into an almost tangible meditative and healing experience with her newly formed The Color Recipie. I interviewed her for this issue of our magazine in honor of the beautiful colors we are witnessing at the change of season taking place in Kuwait. Tell me a little bit about Wala’a Al Muhaiteeb, the person (what you want us to know and a little bit more). I’m twenty-five years old, I’m from Kuwait and I’ve been living in Qatar for seven years. I graduated from VCU-Qatar, as an interior designer who fell in love with colors form the first class at university. I was always curious about environmental psychology and color effects on us, and that curiosity grew with me as an interior designer. I’m also a yogini I’ve been practicing yoga since I was 14 and I can say that yoga is one of the major things that kept me balanced through the craziness of starting a business.

How has color affected you? Color helped me expand my self-knowledge, discover my true talents, passions and strengths. Color also helped me make peace with my weaknesses and turn obstacles to motivations.

What started your journey into the idea of color and yoga after that? My curiosity for color and my quest for a design with a meaning drove me to study color consultations and color therapy while I was living in Tokyo. When I came back from Japan ready to share my ideas I found that people here didn’t know much about it. They didn’t believe that color had any effect, or that color energies exist. So I developed The Color Experience program, which aims to introduce people to color energies and the power of color by exploring colors hands on; through Color Meditation and Color Yoga classes. I offer those classes at The Six Senses Spa at Sharq, Village and resort, Doha, Qatar.

You lived in Japan for a while, how did the Japanese culture influence you? Did living there have any bearing on what you are currently doing with the CR? The Japanese culture influenced me tremendously it made me question many things about my life, my openness to other cultures and ideas, Even though I considered myself quite open to others and other cultures at the time; Tokyo was so extreme that it shook me to my core and forced me to look deeper. The Color Recipe was born in Japan. I remember walking in Harajuku and looking at all the different colors in fashion, interiors and businesses I believe this is what triggered me to further explore colors and color effects. Why do I keep hiding with black? Why can’t I wear color? This made me realize that my fear of speaking and living my truth made me hide with black. Colors helped me come out of that shell.

Tell us a little bit about how you built your business? I started The Color Recipe from home. I didn’t go about it in the usual business planning way, to be honest that way never worked for me. I’m a person who bores easily so I began with the bigger picture of The Color Recipe, I developed a menu and put it on facebook. In the beginning people were not responding the way I wanted them to which made me ask myself how do I make people want it. This question took me back to the core values and why The Color Recipe came about which was to serve by helping people find their true potential through color. The purpose of The Color Recipe which is to design color infused programs that aim to unleash true potential by illuminating ones inner colors. That led me to creating “The Experience Color program”, which allows people to explore color energies through Color Meditation and Color Yoga classes. This program allows me to get feedback from my clients to develop ways to improve my services.

What were your challenges in doing so?

The obstacle for me was letting go of what others and I believed to be the right business model and to explore options that work for me. The Color Recipe is a new concept for this region so I had to educate people about it in order for people to see the benefits and how color can change peoples lives. Getting the idea out the door was one of the hardest things I had to do, but once it was out and people started falling in love with it I just want to give more.

Do you have any plans to expand in Kuwait? Yes. Kuwait has a great market for color, people are curious and love to explore with color.

What are your loves in life besides color? I have two dogs and they are my world outside work, with them I find my joy and remember that unconditional love is the most beautiful thing in the world. I love traveling, reading and learning new things everyday.

What countries do you like visiting and where do you want to go?

Malta is one of my favorite places to go. It's a small island with a lot to offer. I would love to visit Bali, Africa, I love traveling so put me on a plane and take me anywhere.

What is your one message to young women trying to find their way in life and in business (especially in our culture)? Be true to yourself, speak, and live your truth in life and in business don’t do what people expect you to do, do what you love doing. Focus on service and how your business is to serve and your passion to serve will take you to places you never thought you’d go. Never ever give up.

What would you do differently if you had the chance again? I believe in the process I feel that I learned from all the mistakes and the different directions that I went through and still going through. I believe that without all the ups and downs The Color Recipe wouldn’t be where it is today.

What do you find most challenging about blogging?

In your view, why do most bloggers fail?

In our opinion, the most challenging thing about blogging is keeping up with everything going on in Kuwait while having the time for our family and career.

There is no such thing as failing. There is giving up and doing something for the wrong reasons

Is there a special meaning behind the name of your blog? We just put initials of our names together along with our major and it came out quite catchy.

Are you part time blogger or a full time bloggers? We are Engineers by day and part time bloggers by night.

How much time do you spend on your blog daily and weekly? If we would add up our daily hours, I would say 5 hours a day, which is about 30 hours a week. So we do spend a fair amount of time working on the blog.

What is the biggest blogging mistake you have done? No Mistakes, We like to call them lessons. The biggest blogging lesson that we've learned is not to judge a person by his/her instagram/twitter account. There are too many #PrettyPeople both inside and out that are misjudged out there.

What methods do you use to make money from your blog? So far we're not using any methods to make money out of the blog only minor advertisements that require us to make a trip and make an entire photo shoot.

What methods do you use to drive traffic to your blog? There are no methods really, just being ourselves and doing what we love. Sarah loves everything new in the fashion world and Fatemah loves to write, put the two passions together and it gives you FENGS BLOG. We like to make everything personal, everything in the blog is our own experience, our daily life and stuff we're interested in.

Ten Christmas Movies That You Didn’t Know Were Christmas Movies

For every Santa-strewn sugarsweet family movie set at Christmas, there is an alternate film which uses the season as little more than a familiar backdrop. It’s not all about peace, love and goodwill to all mankind. Sometimes, even at Christmas, there is fighting and bullets and gritty dramatic themes. Here are ten movies set at this time of year that really have nothing to do with the holiday spirit.

10. The Shop Around The Corner Adapted from a Hungarian play, Ernst Lubitsch’s eternal romantic comedy is set in a leather goods shop in Budapest during the Great Depression, at Christmastime. The director, whose wry sense of humour and deft romantic touch came to be known as the “Lubitsch Touch”, crafts a charming story of two shop employees (James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan) who mutually despise each other while maintaining a secret pen-pal relationship, during which they fall in love. If all that sounds a bit familiar, Nora Ephron used the idea as the basis for her 1998 romantic comedy You've Got Mail, in which one of the characters owns a bookshop named The Shop Around The Corner.

9. The Long Kiss Goodnight Before Jason Bourne, there was Geena Davis. In Renny Harlin’s unfairly overlooked 1996 spy thriller, she plays a hired killer who loses her memory and forgets all about her previous life, becoming instead a sedate suburban housewife. Then, one Christmas, her past catches up with her. Davis, who has since semi-retired from acting, is a member of brains-club Mensa and a talented archer, who almost made the US archery team for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

8. Coquelicots In Philippe Blasband 2007 drama, three people find themselves spending Christmas day in a Belgian beauty parlour, through accident or design, boredom or loneliness. Her parents believe she is studying at university, but Rachel has found work as a call girl. She has come to the attention of the reptilian Fabrice, a pimp who is always on the lookout for new talent. The last of the three is Xenia, a nervous, agitated young woman who doesn’t want to talk about her past, even though she wears every painful moment of it on her face. As the rest of the world celebrates, in one way or another, these three have to face up to difficult truths about their wasted lives.

7. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Shane Black’s 2005 comedy film noir, titled after an Italian translation of a James Bond movie, stars Robert Downey Jnr. as a petty criminal who travels to LA for an unlikely acting audition at Christmastime. He doesn’t get the job, but together with Val Kilmer’s bitchy private eye and Michelle Monaghan’s party-girl, he does become embroiled in an extremely complicated murder mystery. The film might have been Black’s directorial debut but he had previous form with unexpected Christmas movies, having written the aforementioned Long Kiss Goodnight and Lethal Weapon(which ends on a scene where a family swap presents around a Christmas tree.)

6. Salvage A bare-bones exercise in claustrophobic terror set, naturally, in ordinary family homes on Christmas Eve, debut director Laurence Gough’s horror sees the residents of a quiet cul-desac plunged into a nightmare when a group of heavily armed military personnel take over their street and confine them to their homes. Is it a terrorist attack, or something worse? The seasonal setting doesn’t distract from Gough’s assured handling of his heart-shredding story, filled with genuine scares.

5. Behind Enemy Lines In John Moore’s 2001 Bosnian war film, Owen Wilson plays an American jet-fighter pilot who gets shot down over the embattled country on Christmas Day and lands in the middle of a genocidal campaign the Bosnian Serb army are conducting against the local Muslim population. Lost in a strange country and chased by the enemy soldiers, Wilson’s terrified pilot has to make his way to safety, helped by Gene Hackman’s commanding officer. Irish director Moore was almost killed in a scene where a tank bursts through a wall. Standing in the wrong place, he was pulled out of the way at the last minute by a stuntman.

4. The Ice Harvest Somewhere between a crime thriller, an indie drama and a cynical Christmas movie, Harold Ramis’ underrated 2005 noir comedy tells the story of John Cusack’s crooked lawyer, who steals millions from his gangster client on Christmas Eve and is stopped from escaping by a wintery blizzard. Director Ramis turns the seasonal locations, Christmas trees and tinsel into a nightmarish backdrop from which, it seems, there is no escape.

3. Brazil Tis the season to be paranoid. Terry Gilliam's dystopian masterpiece has an ordinary, everyday man, a cog in a massive bureaucratic machine, start to live very dangerously when he meets the woman of his dreams. The Christmas setting allows Gilliam to indulge his extravagant tastes in production design while allowing a few cutting digs at the extent to which the holiday season has fallen prey to materialism and crass commercialisation.

2. Kisses Irish writer and director Lance Daly's irresistibly charming drama has two Dublin kids run away from their suburban home at Christmas and spend a single night of wonder and terror on the streets of the inner city. Although the twinkling lights of the city at Christmastime make for a magical backdrop, Daly’s film is more concerned with ideas of character and journey than making simple, heart-warming messages about the season of goodwill.

1. Die Hard You might not realise that John McTiernan’s classic 1980s action movie is set at Christmas, what with all the bullets and explosions and Bruce Willis in a bloodsoaked vest. But it is, for no good reason other than to provide Alan Rickman’s terrorist with a convenient office party to crash - and kidnap all the guests - and wisecracking Willis with a compelling reason to want to spend some time with his estranged wife, played by Bonny Bedelia. The same teddy bear that Willis carries as a present for his young daughter makes an appearance at the start of McTiernan’s next film, The Hunt For Red October. Watch this one and it may give you a certain sense of fulfilment in its own humble way.

Mother greets me with the greatest smile, filling my heart with comfort, for it means that Elana has not exposed me. We walk side-byside, mother and I, Elana of course remains at home, then we stand in front of the Pellegrino’s door. I hold my breath, then knock. “Welcome.” Luciano’s father, the frigid iceberg from this morning, smiles as he ushers us inside. Mother thanks Signor Geovani de’Pelligrino, I merely nod. The house is decrepit. Most of the furniture is wooden. They need to buy carpets from the Ottomans and curtains too for their windows are naked without, but in true noblemen fashion, the house is littered with candle holders that occupy lit wax, illuminating the house for nighttime. The poor just sleep at night, having no use for expensive candles, but Luciano’s family—Luciano’s name means light in fact—apparently can’t handle the dark. The sun completes its descent as we enter. The smell of cooking wafts around us. “I apologize for the smell,” says Luciano’s mother, who joins her husband at the front door to greet us both. Mother and I lean in for a cheek-to-cheek but Signora Alessandra Dondolo waves us off then shakes our hands like a gentleman. “We try not to kiss like the lower classes,” she says. “It spreads maladies.” I roll my eyes and follow her through a corridor toward the dining room. Luciano is nothing at all like his mother who is pearly white with golden hair and pale grey eyes. She is, furthermore, skin and bones whereas the Pelligrino men are muscular with broad shoulders. When Luciano joins us at the table, his attire catches my attention because it resembles my father’s doublet with pink sleeves, only Luciano’s is black with pistachio colored sleeves instead. His scallop shell heirloom and the knife at his hip add upon him a sinister glint reflecting off the candlelight, not like a halo, but rather, like the fake glitter of plated gold, which catches your attention but leaves you questioning its authenticity. His mother and father, on the other hand, are wearing cloaks, the mere sight of their blue and purple with white and black cloaks draws a heat wave over my body. Nobles would do anything to stand out, even when they invite their neighbors over for dinner, even if it burns them alive. As soon as we sit—Signor Geovani on the head of the table, facing his son, mother and I on one side, facing Signora Alessandra, and Luciano to my right—the adults talk among themselves. I do not pay attention to their repartee because I feel it to be fake pretentious drivel that is primarily concerned with the concealment of

real thoughts, opinions, and desires. There are two pies on the table. I skip the appetizers and main dish and head directly to the pie, however, when I gobble a spoonful I almost retch. I had not known it was filled with lampreys! Who puts baby eels in a pie? Oh God. Tears threaten to exit my eyes as I force myself to swallow the fishy lump. Ugh. That is revolting. Yuck, yuck, yuck. Luciano almost smiles. He has been avoiding my gaze since appearing in the dining room, sitting quietly, arms below the table, eyes on his plate. His plate was filled by his mother. Signora Alessandra cut him a large chunk of the sweet and sour pork that seems to be diminishing in size even though Luciano’s arms are hidden under the table and his lips are grey and dry. I cut myself a piece and squeeze a slice of lemon over. Finally, food. Finally. I had a large breakfast before heading to Father’s grave this morning, and barely nibbled on dry bread at the Ottoman’s. This meal satiates my hunger, balancing my humors. It makes me question whether I might’ve been edgy all day for lack of nutrition! Fancy that, hating Giuseppe, Caterina, my mother, Elana, and Luciano, all because of hunger. I smile to myself and peer back at Luciano. No pork. His plate is empty. My eyebrows knot together. “Is the pork to your satisfaction?” I ask tauntingly. The adults stop talking and glance at Luciano’s empty plate. “Oh! Luciano! You ate it all. I am so happy,” his mother says. “Don’t coddle the boy, Alessandra,” his father snaps back before turning to my mother and continuing his speech about the Portuguese slave trade and its ramifications on the Venetian market. All of a sudden, their wild mare begins to whine and rattle his chains. I look at my plate as I add another chunk of sweet and sour pork with extra lemon zest. I, who have eaten in the morning, nibbled on a piece of bread at the Ottomans, hydrated my throat on more than one occasion, had been on edge all day, easily irritated and peeved; what of this poor man who has been starved, beaten, and confined since dawn without a drop of water to wet his lips? I convince myself with extreme difficulty that the slave lacks a soul. I mustn’t displace my human emotions on a soulless creature for it is contrary to Christ’s bidding. The clunking crescendos with no intermissions, coupled with the black man’s cries. “Argh! Argh!” I am unsure whether he speaks a coherent language that is foreign to my ears, or whether his words are mere animalistic calls for help. Luciano shifts in his seat. His father fixes him with his own penetrating gaze. “Don’t you dare.” His father points a fork in his son’s direction. Luciano purses his lips, leveling his gaze back at his father. My head snaps back and forth from one madman to the next, from one penetrating gaze to the next, from one Pellegrino to the next. The wild mare stops crying. The atmosphaera grows heavy with tension. Luciano then slides his chair backwards and stands. “Luca!” cries his mother. “You take one step away from the table and you will be out on the street. Haven’t you put us through enough with your disobedience?” “Father,” Luciano begins before his father interrupts him. “Sit!” Mother and I hold our breaths in unison. I would’ve sat down had my father ripped me with his gaze, especially if we had people coming over and I was intending to trick their daughter into wedlock. Luciano doesn’t. He remains standing for some time, his hands, which are turned into fists on either side of his hips, shake. I picture Luciano pulling out his onyx knife and flinging it across the table at his father. When the slave’s clanking resumes, Luciano bows down ostentatiously. The tip of his nose almost dips into the lamprey pie. “Signor Geovani, the food that your wife prepared with generous benevolence has disturbed my stomach. Would you really hold me at the table against my will, against your Christian duty toward cleanliness, and humiliate your only son in the presence of guests? And what for? To teach me obedience? You are my father, and I already apologized for my… negligence in Venice, despite the wealth and prosperity it proffered upon the family. So please, allow me to depart if only for some time as I defeca—” Luciano doesn’t get the chance to complete the word which shocked us all! Our eyes are dilated, our jaws almost dislocated, and his mother utters a breathless shriek. “Luciano! Sit down this instant you impudent good-for-nothing!” “Good-for-nothing?” Luciano answers back, his cheekiness replaced with downright discourtesy, “I was fourteen when I began to rebuild the Pellegrino fortune that you had squandered in your youth. Four years, father, is all it took to make you more money and prestige than your wildest imagination!”

Signor Geovani drops his fork and leaps to his feet. “You will shut your mouth this instant!” “Or what?” Luciano retorts, “You will chain me to a wall, starve me, beat me? How does it feel knowing your wild mare didn’t succumbed? Three days you’ve starved the man, and three times he managed to escape, twice on the ship! You can’t tame him anymore than you can tame me!” Signora Alessandra stands as well—mother and I only share sideway glances—and tries to placate her family members, who will not bend to one another like men touched by Hybris, the Greek Goddess of arrogance, instead of Jesus Christ. “Get out! Get out! I have suffered you long enough, and in this hell-hole at the end of the world no one will care that you are not under my roof!” Luciano’s smile is filthy. He looks at me before he nods to his father, his gaze sending shivers up my back. “That is all I’ve been asking for.” He leaves, and his mother totters behind him. Mother, myself, and madman senior remain on the table. He snatches the fork that he discarded out of anger, stabs his pork, rips a large chunk out of it, then stuffs it in his mouth. I nudge mother who jumps from fright, and motion to her that it’s time to leave. She concurs, but not before asking if the Pelligrinos still want me as a daughter-in-law. Ugh. * Back at home, my mother is somber. She calls Elana to massage her feet and get her ready for bed. She will narrate dinner’s events to the little slave, which in my opinion is inconsiderate, because mother will have to mention the wild mare again who frightens Elana. Inconsiderate or not, however, it is no longer one of my concerns. I grab some fruit from the pantry and then head to my chambers. I close my door and wait until the coast is clear then I light a candle. I pull out my runaway basket to make sure that everything is in place. When I pull out the silver box, I decide against taking it, and settle on leaving it behind for Mother. It’s the least I can do. I take out my father’s stationery and dip the quill in black ink. “Mrs. Botticelli” I begin then scrunch out the paper and write on a new sheet: “Dearest Mother, “I love you more than you can imagine, but life in Corfu is no longer bearable. Rest assured that I will never sully your good name. I will put all of Father’s education into good use by becoming the first Italian female to receive a university degree. I leave tonight with a sad heart at our parting. Don’t ever forget me. “Your Obedient Daughter, “Maria Leonardo Botticelli.” I blow out the candle, remove my blue dress, fold it into my basket, and then I slip into a pale pink nightgown and under the covers, where I stare out of the open window into the black blanket of the sky, waiting for first light. Oddly enough, I don’t feel anxious or afraid. My heart is filled with peace, serenity, despite our dinner at the Pellegrinos. I nibble on an apple in bed and hum Vincenzo Capirola’s “Paduana Descorda.” And wait. * My eyes almost shut. I slap my cheeks and shake my head. I light a candle every once in a while to check the clock. About an hour before first light, I wear my father’s clothes, folding the tips of my pant legs a number of times so they stay above my ankles. I wear the leather pianelles instead of my black dress shoes with white ribbons because I feel like they’ll handle the wear and tear of travel better. I tip toe out of my chambers to wash my face with water, grabbing two more apples from the pantry, stuffing them in my basket, then sneak out of my house for the last time. I walk and walk. The streets are dark and empty. I pass the Church, remembering Giuseppe strolling in the cemetery half-dressed, and Vittoria’s transformation at Church, her enviable audacity to expose her back and the way her hair poured over it like melted gold. I pass the Ottomans’ house, the street where the Pellegrinos beat their slave into oblivion, and finally reach the Well of Knowledge where my Galen rests within. I draw the bucket out and fill in my flasks, and as I drink to repletion, I recall my meetings with both Giuseppe and Luciano on this spot, then, when I am done, I trudge the paved pathway, between the holey trees where the kids did not in fact sing sings about my stains. The path is darker than the streets because the trees, whose leaves entwine in an arch, block the sliver of moonlight. I trudge slowly, humming “Paduana Descorda” under my breath. Somewhere on the pathway, I hear the faint echo of footsteps. It stops me in my tracks. I look around. It is too difficult to see in the darkness, the moon is but a crescent, its rays barely can slither between the leaves to light my path, and just when I thought that a stranger in the middle of the night was following me, it starts to drizzle. The sound of the echo increases, but because of the paved streets, it

appears from different places, causing me to swirl. I do not want to call out. I do not want to bring attention to myself and allow the fiend hiding behind the trees to locate me from my voice. I feel that I am making too much noise already by my frantic movement. When the footsteps become even louder and speed up, indicating a sprint, I start to yell, “Who goes there! Show yourself! Show yourself!” I only see him when he is on top of me covering my mouth with his hand, his deep, blue, penetrating eyes sparkling even in the dead of night. “Shhhh,” he whispers, pinning me to the ground with his muscular build. I feel him. On me. Between my parted legs. I squirm and he tightens his grip. “Don’t move, Maria,” he commands me, but I move and wriggle. His mysterious eyes betray fear. Fear! He is afraid of me! The thought gives me strength. I continue writhing on the ground, which is getting slippery as the drizzle turns into a shower. If the weather gets even worse, as August is sometimes accredited with random storms, Giuseppe and Arturo are bound to be heading back up this path to wait it out in the village. And I will have help! “Mmmm!” I mouth below his hand. “Shhh!” “Mmmhhhh!” “Maria, I beg you.” Beg me? “Mmmhhhheeeeelp!” When I finally break out of his grasp I roll away, and yell and yell because my life is depending on it, I call Giuseppe’s name and Arturo’s and take a few steps backward from the Venetian nobleman. Then I hear the growl of an angry man, a man who has been starved, beaten, and tortured for days, a man who concealed by the darkness, holding a silver knife whose handle matches the color of his skin. Luciano faces his father’s slave, who glares at him with menace, waving the silver knife in front of him. Luciano takes two steps backwards and stands in front of me, he wraps his left arm around me, pressing me against his back then mumbles, “I tried to warn you, Maria, I tried.” I don’t get the chance to justify my noncompliance for the slave charges toward us! Luciano let’s go of me and yells “Runnnnn!” I run in the direction of the port as I hear the most heart-wrenching scream behind me. I swerve and find Luciano on the ground, yelling “My eye!” repeatedly, as he rolls in the dirt. I hold my breath for it is not the only sound I hear. I also hear the footsteps of the wild mare running toward me. December 2013

The Wrong Bride This month book review is special to me, why? Because it is one of the early books I fell in love with when I started my quest in reading. Not only that, I have enjoyed those pages over and over again until I reached the magic twentieth time, and when I lost it after a while, I bought myself a new fresh copy to enjoy even more. Just recently I have enjoyed reading it for the twenty first time. The Wrong Bride (2001) is an intriguing title for a very intriguing story, written by author Sussana Carr; she

is an American author famous for writing contemporary romance novel, she has received many awards and her books got translated into different languages. The Wrong Bride is her first published novel, as she used to write novels since she was a school girl. She written known titles such as: Confessions of a "Wicked" Woman (2005), Ex, Why and Me (2006) and Secrets of a Bollywood Marriage coming out in 2014. The story talks about sexy, hunk, Australian businessman Devlin Hunter who wants to close a deal with Tracey Parks to become a CEO of her stepfather company by marrying her. Tracey has an identical twin, Jessica. Tracey asks her sister for a favor for the first time ever; that she takes her place in the rehearsal dinner one day before her wedding as she has to go away on a business trip but promises to be back in time to marry Devlin. However, Jessica isn’t sure she can pull it off as her and her twin are total opposites in personality, yet, Tracey reassures her just to act like a witch and Devlin wouldn’t know the difference. When Jess appears at the Wedding rehearsal Devlin immediately knows she is not Tracy. Not only is Devlin on to the switch, he knows where Tracy is and what she is up to. He arranges to stop her efforts to return in time for the wedding and Jessica is forced to go through with the sham marriage in order to protect her family. Will they stay together? What will happen afterwards? You have to read that book to be able to find out the exciting details about this story. Engaging and well-drawn, Devlin and Jessica ignite the story with their chemistry. THE WRONG BIDE is a sensual, sensitive and satisfying read that, at only 217 pages, author Sussana Carr has packed with enough intrigue and romance to keep the reader turning pages all the way to the end.

Throughout the story, several thoughts are reflected; daily efforts and work, how to overcome difficulties, steadfastness, courage to take risky decisions, etc.

Safe Haven was released in February 2013.

Twi-hards don't need to despair in 2013! There may not be anotherTwilight movie, but Stephenie Meyer's book, The Host, was converted into a film that was released in March 2013.

Carrie The original movie of Stephen King's debut novel, Carrie, came out in 1976 and is a classic. Carrie tells the story of a teenage girl with telekinetic powers who is an outcast with a deep need for revenge. The remake came out in October 2013.

Ender's Game Orson Scott Card's 1985 novel, Ender's Game, is finally being adapted into a movie. There are some changes to the novel -- the actor is supposed to be 12, not 6 -- but the director says he is a big fan of the book and kept much of it intact. Ender's Game stars Harrison Ford and hit theaters November 1.

Catching Fire When I saw The Hunger Games in March 2012, the thought of waiting a year and a half for another movie was almost unbearable. I think many other fans will be thrilled to see how the film adaptation of this saga continues in Catching Fire. The movie was released in November.

Don’t Be Afraid To Get On The Train

It was a cold evening, snowflakes were falling from the sky and everybody couldn’t wait to go back home and sit in front of the fireplace. It was one of those magical nights though, with Christmas lights everywhere and people strolling along the street shopping. “Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way,” a group of carol singers were playing Christmas songs and I stopped to listen while I waited for the train to come.

The third person that I approached was a man in his 50s. He had such a sad look on his face and his mind was miles away. He told me about his wife that had died a couple of months ago and he couldn’t seem to get back on his feet again, or even visit her grave yet. He said he was too heartbroken and everyday he would come to the train station so that he could go visit her grave but then he would back out. He told me his heart was in a million pieces. “I miss her,” he cried.

A lot of things were going on around me. A mother was cradling her baby and trying to keep the baby warm. A man had his arms wrapped around his wife under mistletoe and she kept giggling every time he kissed her forehead. Two teenagers were gossiping about what had happened that day in school.

I felt so sad for them, this train station was full of stories.

But what really caught my eye was four particular people, all sitting on their own. One man had his head buried in his hands and he was sobbing, but very quietly. I went to sit beside him, he still had his face hidden away and I watched, as his tears would hit the ground, one by one. We were all waiting for the train to come, but we all had a different destination to go to. This young man was there for a very long time and had no intentions of going anywhere, so why was he sitting at the train station? “Sir, what is the matter?” I asked. “What are you waiting for?” He told me about his story, how he and his wife had separated and he wanted her back but was too scared. He told me how he would sit at the train station everyday but never got on the train. “I love her,” he whispered.

The fourth person I spoke to was a man in his late 20’s. He stood there with a single suitcase and waited anxiously. “What are you waiting for?” I asked. He gave me a smile and said, “Nothing. Just for the train to come. I know life is filled with ups and downs and I know it can be a scary place to be in. But, we as human beings are strong. We must learn to face our fears, move on and live in the moment. If you want something, go and get it. If you are scared of change, don’t be. You will never know until you try. And, if you miss somebody and you are grieving, it is okay to do so. But also remember all the beautiful memories you once shared with that person, cherish it and slowly move on. Your loved ones would want the best for you. They would want you to be happy. I am waiting to get on the train and explore the adventures that await me.” He got on the train and waved goodbye. Life is full of rides and full of stories. But don’t ever be afraid to get on the train and go to where you want to be. Life is too short.

As I approached the second person, I noticed she had a worried look on her face. When I asked her what was the matter, she kept her head down. “I got an offer to work at this place, but it is so far away and I am scared. It’s been two weeks now and I still haven’t made up my mind on whether I want to go or not. Change scares me, so I come here everyday trying to see if I can get the courage to hop on the train and go. But I never do.”

Ahmed AlRashid It was almost two years ago when we first interviewed Ahmed for CityPages and if you are a regular reader of CityPages, you may also remember the amazing cover design he did for our second anniversary. Here we bring you Ahmed again when his recent collaboration with Starbucks middle east is making quite a buzz. Ahmed AlRashid is best at composing art design on objects. His name is well known for creating vibrant, attractive designs. His flicker account serves as the gallery for his artistic accomplishments, a wide range of items he has been commissioned to design for important clients. For one of the leading establishments namely Kuwait Finance House, he has designed a Hummer, calendars, Ramadan gift boxes, real estate brochures and even their advertisements. The Saudi Kuwaiti Finance House logo has sprung from his imagination as well as the banners for the Dubai International Bowling Tournament. There are other numerous other assignments he has dabbled in, and they carry his signature, innovative and modern view on design. Ahmed is originally from Kuwait and has completed his Bachelors in Management from Kuwait University. His interest began 13 years ago and since then, he has pursued his chosen vocation voraciously. Having completely invested in himself, he undertook a variety of jobs from different companies and studied fervently to hone his talents. Ahmed is an inspiration to many Kuwaiti designers, who admire his talent and drive in the quest for excellence. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A package should have looks, brains, and personality to attract, convince, and start a relationshipâ&#x20AC;?. It is what he believes is that has given him the status he has today. CityPages caught up with the graphic designer to chat about his exciting profession. Hi, for those who did not read your first interview with CityPages, please introduce yourself? I am Ahmed Al Rashid, simply an art and grapic designer. I completed my Bachelors in Management Degree from Kuwait University.

How did you get your start in logo designing? It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t something intentional. A friend of mine was in the process of starting a company. He liked one of my designs and felt that it was relevant to his company. So he asked me to develop it further for him and it took off from there.

When did you first realize that designing was inside you? Since I was a child, I was very fond of colours, and I always preferred buying colouring sets instead of toys. When I was in high school, I used to draw on every wall in the school, which made my peers wonder who was behind those drawings that were signed under a fake name. This is when I realized that I need to hone my talent.

Who inspired you to get into designing?. A number of designers in Britain.

How can you describe your unique style of designing? Simple, bold, and a strong combination of colors in different shades.

Can you recall any logos that presented a challenge? A car rental company in the UAE that had a large fleet of around 6000 cars and 20 branches, called Super Price, was in the process of rebranding. There were many companies considered for the job and I was selected. Being selected in itself was a challenge, since this company has many competitors, some of which are multinational companies, in the same field. With the grace of Allah, I managed to meet this challenge, and the company was very pleased with my work. December 2013

I usually hold a meeting with the company in the beginning to get some answers. Then, I follow that up with more questions in order to be certain of the company and its field of business. After that, I sketch what’s on my mind and select 3 or 4 options. Then I develop the options selected further on designing programs to present them to the client.

Where do you take your inspirations from? I get my inspiration from music and traveling. When I am working on a big project, I travel during the weekend to a quiet place to refresh my mind and prepare for the job.

Tell us of a project that you are proud of? I can’t pick one per se, because I feel that every project is important in its own way and has contributed to my development. Each had its own challenges that helped me grow.

I am eager to know of your collaboration with Starbucks Middle east, can you explain us more about it? Starbucks Middle East asked me to design ten paper cups in my own way to use them in an ad campaign in the Middle East and all the branches of the company. I made the designs, and I was keen to leave my print because I like the Starbucks brand. The people at Starbucks highly appreciated my work so did their customers. I would like to thank Starbucks for the collaboration, and I look forward to working with them again.

My hobbies are traveling, cycling, speed sports, and reading.

Do people copy your work? What is your message for such people? I do not know if there are people who copy my work. As they say, imitation is a sincere form of flattery. If there are any, my message to them is to not waste their time imitating me or others, but rather to work on having their own style and identity in their work.

Do you like reading books? I enjoy reading when I have the time to do so. I mostly read when I travel.

Your message for aspiring graphic designing students? My message is actually a quote that left a profound impact on me. ‘A design is not finished, until someone is using it’ - Brenda Laurel.

Your message for CityPages magazine? I would like to thank CityPages, especially Mr. Jameel, for interviewing me in this unique magazine that I always read. I wish you best of luck.

Tell us of other interesting projects that you have completed. I worked on many projects; the latest was with Level Shoe District at Dubai Mall. It was a live event where I drew on shoes from international brands for a specific number of VIP clients. It was my first time to perform in such a way. The show was great and greatly received.

Tell us of your proudest moment? I’m always proud when any of my work is recognized.

Anything in the pipeline? What can we expect next from Ahmed? I have several proposals that I am currently studying in addition to other projects that are being finalized in terms of agreement. Soon I will be working on projects and collaborations in Kuwait and abroad and I hope that you will be pleased with what you will see.

Is this your first visit to Kuwait?

Yes, this is my first visit to our partner in Kuwait

How long has this partnership been with Kuwait? We entered the Kuwait market in 1996. We met with Moath for the first time during ORGATEC which is a large furniture fair in 2004 and that was when we entered into a formal partnership and ever since then we grew and developed the Kuwait business together and today is a big step and milestone for this cooperation.

What are you celebrating today?

Today we are celebrating this new location as it is a big step forward and an investment in the market and a strong sign that we are very interested in the future and that we believe in the Kuwait market, and also for the customers and clients who are open to ours and Moath 's project, this is a very good place to come and see, and feel, and touch and understand our philosophy.

Can you briefly tell us about the brand itself?

Bene is a very old family business from Austria. It was started sometime in 1776 and it has turned into an office furniture maker in the early 19th century and it then constantly grew in the world markets. Even today our supervisory board is with the Bene family members. It has very traditional routes of this very little town Waidhofen. still manufacturing almost everything at Waidhofen.

Is the focus today still on Office furnishing?

Yes, we are an office furniture maker and focus on the modern and trend oriented community.

How often do you come up with new designs? Is it yearly? or seasonally?

There is not a real rhythm to it and don't have a fix time to bring out a new collection. We have a pretty big research and design unit that follows the trends in the market, how the office work develops and grows and tries to develop future trends and Bene is very much a trend setter in introducing new concepts. We have a constant product development and every year we bring out a lot of new furniture and adapt the existing furniture.

How many outlets do you have other than Kuwait and Austria? We have a total of 82 locations in total and if you subtract the 9 locations in Austria, we have 73 locations out of Austria and 72 without Kuwait.

Apart from Austria, which are your other big markets?

In terms of volume, the next big market is Germany and the Russian market is also very big. We are one of the two or three big companies in the UK and then its the Middle-east market which is very important for us. We have branches or partners in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and one of the bigger one is this one in Kuwait.

What is your main differentiating factor that sets you apart?

We differentiates ourselves in understanding how people work in a particular environment as there are different people doing different jobs within an organization with different work habits and routines and understanding all these and translate this into furniture and try to build the right place for everybody in the company.

Who is your ideal customer? What size of an organization?

Basically, our concepts starts for organization with 30 to 40 employees and maybe 20 is the lowest. But we focus on large customers such as BMW, Microsoft, Coca Cola, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, google, facebook and you name it.

Do you offer any customized solutions or do you only offer ready-to-use solutions?

Our standard product portfolio has over 400 Million different possible opportunities so mostly the customer's needs are always met in the existing range of products. However, we do a lot of customization depending on the needs of the customer but usually they find within our product range what they desire.

Can you name some of your prominent clients from Kuwait?

Yes, we have Wataniya telecom. We are currently doing a big project for Kuwait Social Security, we recently completed a big project in the KIPCO tower and many others.

Additional balloons can be swallowed and inflated during the treatment period depending on the response of the patient. At the end of the treatment period, the balloons are removed through a short endoscopic procedure.
