As another year comes to a close we look back at all the wonderful things that we have achieved in the last 12 months and look forward to the New Year and new beginnings. We here at CityPages Magazine are excited to share our Third anniversary Issue with our faithful readers and bring you the best that the magazine has to offer with our exciting editorials. I hope that you liked our new look and feel of the magazine. Please do send me your feedback. Our entire team is very excited to see your reaction. There is plenty of new and interesting sections added up in the magazine. Some are introduced in this issue and some will follow from the next issue onwards. I am personally very excited about our recent collaboration with Iszonica Modeling School which gives a great opportunity for the local talent to showcase their work. We completed our first collaboration this month and the result is right here. Please flip to page 47 and see our first fashion photoshoot. The InnerVIEW with Abdalla AlMuzaini is another interesting addition to our unique content and I am sure you will enjoy it. We had great time at the Marina FM Studio where we met DJ X. I am most excited about our 3rd Anniversary Cover. It is the result of a very long thought process and I am glad and thankful to the amazing, the one and only Chef Adlah AlSharhan who accepted my request and gave us some brilliant shots to bring out this cover for you. Please don't miss reading her interview in the Living Room with Kinda this month. Our team member Hind AlJasser is really brave. She took us in this cold weather to meet the Kuwait National Ice Hockey team and it was a real pleasure meeting them and seeing them practicing the game and we really wish them a good luck for their upcoming tournament. Welcome to the anniversary issue of CityPages, we are three years old this month! Whenever the word 'anniversay' is mentioned, there are various implications that come along with that milestone, such as survival, success, determination and last but not least hard work. I am pleased to say that the CityPages team is not short on any of those and the one thing that drives us is love for what we are accomplishing here. Celebrating this month by gracing our special issue is my dear friend from way back when, Adla Al Sharhan who just happens to be Kuwait's trailblazing celebrity Chef. She sat down with me in the Living Room Lounge to tell me more about what she's got in the pipeline, and it is quite exciting if I do say so my self. We were honored to have had the chance to discuss all things culinary with her. In light of this special celebatory issue my personal message to all our readers is to keep your eyes open for golden opportunites to achieve your dream and when you see them seize them, without thinking twice or too long for they may pass you by just as quickly as they presented themselves. Miro Minasian always showed love and passion to music as a child. He would always be playing the music loud whether at home or in the car. This passion of his turned into a profession at the age of six when he got his first music keyboard. At the age of 16, Miro got a professional music keyboard labeled "X" where he produced his first mix on. Not too long after that, Miro started DJ-ing at gigs at schools and carnivals using a regular PC and was named as DJ X. Today DJ X is one of the famous and best DJ's in Kuwait playing at Marina FM Studio 88.8 as a DJ and a music producer using the most advanced and professional equipments. Let us find out how attached and obsessed DJ X really is with music!

Scenario: Many people claimed and were expecting the world to end in the year 2012. It is now confirmed, knowing that tomorrow was the end of the world, and people are running for their lives in the streets. Tell us how would you handle this reality and how would you spend the last day if tomorrow was to never come?
"Music is used to heal people in times of sickness and worries and panic. If it was the end of the world, I wouldn’t think of doing anything else but playing music till the music stops. Many people are familiar with the phrase "Party like there is no tomorrow," well I guess this would definitely be applied here! I would throw the biggest party in the world because I want people to have the best time of their lives before time comes to an end. My music will unite all nationalities, cultures, and religions to bond every human-being together to ease the moment of truth. I would want to leave behind hope to the people; as if there was a tomorrow. I believe no one should ever give up and should fight to their last breathe and pursue the things they love. I hope people would remember me as DJ X who pursued the love of music and partied the night away as if there was no tomorrow 'literally!'" January 2013

Five top tips to starting a successful business As LinkedIn is a business that started in a living room, much like Virgin began in a basement, I thought my first blog on the site should be about how to simply start a successful business. Here are five top tips I’ve picked up over the years.
1. Listen more than you talk We have two ears and one mouth, using them in proportion is not a bad idea! To be a good leader you have to be a great listener. Brilliant ideas can spring from the most unlikely places, so you should always keep your ears open for some shrewd advice. This can mean following online comments as closely as board meeting notes, or asking the frontline staff for their opinions as often as the CEOs. Get out there, listen to people, draw people out and learn from them.
2. Keep it simple You have to do something radically different to stand out in business. But nobody ever said different has to be complex. There are thousands of simple business solutions to problems out there, just waiting to be solved by the next big thing in
business. Maintain a focus upon innovation, but don’t try to reinvent the wheel. A simple change for the better is far more effective than five complicated changes for the worse.
3. Take pride in your work Last week I enjoyed my favourite night of the year, the Virgin Stars of the Year Awards, where we celebrated some of those people who have gone the extra mile for us around the Virgin world. With so many different companies, nationalities and personalities represented
under one roof, it was interesting to see what qualities they all have in common. One was pride in their work, and in the company they represent. Remember your staff are your biggest brand advocates, and focusing on helping them take pride will shine through in how they treat your customers.
4. Have fun, success will follow If you aren’t having fun, you are doing it wrong. If you feel like getting up in the morning to work on your business is a chore, then it's time to try something else. If you are having a good time, there is a far greater chance a positive, innovative atmosphere will be nurtured and your business will fluorish. A smile and a joke can go a long way, so be quick to see the lighter side of life.
5. Rip it up and start again If you are an entrepreneur and your first venture isn’t a success, welcome to the club! Every successful businessperson has experienced a few failures along the way – the important thing is how you learn from them. Don’t allow yourself to get disheartened by a setback or two, instead dust yourself off and work out what went wrong. Then you can find the positives, analyse where you can improve, rip it up and start again.

"Do not hang your hat where your hands can not reach it". You need to take into consideration the state of the economy and the careers available to you. Step 3: Seek additional help. Why? Because many people in the past have had good career changing ideas but they never got any where trying to accomplish the career they wonted or to make the transition. There are a lot of Institutes available to freely assist in this area. Find the best ones that suits you. Step 4: Set a deadline. In almost every thing deadlines are vitally important, you must set a time limit on the accomplishment of this new career of yours. By doing this you will save yourself from the pain and frustration that comes from being stuck year-in and year-out reminding yourself of what you need to do but still not doing it. The choice is yours to make, the ball is in your court, I have given you every thing you need to know in a simple yet effective and efficient manner. A Blank Slate.. A New Year! Welcome to our first article of the year, which begins by asking: “How was your last year?” I am guessing it was filled with highs and lows, wins and losses, some laughter and probably some tears, which is really great and not at all a bad thing. Oliver Wendell Holmes sums it up beautifully saying: “laughter and tears are meant to turn the wheels of the same machinery of sensibility; one is wind-power, and the other water-power; that is all” We can look at life like a painting - wouldn't it be boring if it was just one happy color? I don’t know anyone whose life is like that, but it seems that is what many of us strive for. We need different colors, tones and hues to make life interesting: yellow, red, purple, dark, light, sunny and shade. Now that sounds like a picture I would enjoy looking at. My last year was unusual and filled with unexpected events – both pleasant and challenging. I am thankful for the year that was, I will take what was positive and let go of the negative.If I don’t let go of the negative, I am assuming a burden I need not carry, like the young monk… Two monks were on a journey when they came to a river where a beautifully dressed woman was standing.

Signs that You Married the Wrong Person NICOLE WELLS The problem in many marriages is that couples sometimes fail to see the wrongness in the marriage. They refuse to accept the truth that they married the wrong person and they become defensive because they want to protect themselves from the shame and ridicule expressed by their friends and loved ones who know the truth. Marrying the wrong person puts one in an unstable situation. Before you reach the critical stage of your marriage, you must look for signs if you married the wrong person so that you can at least do something before it is too late. How would you know that you married the wrong person?
Incompatibility
You are opposites
Marriage is not only about commitment and responsibility. Couples must also be compatible in order for the marriage to work. Some couples marry just for the sake of marrying and end up being married to the wrong person. If you are not compatible with your partner, then you married the wrong person. You can make the marriage work only if you do not mind even if you and your partner are not compatible. Even then, there are always disadvantages of couples who are not compatible.
They say that opposites attract each other but when it comes to marriage; opposites don’t match which means that your marriage is wrong because you married the wrong person. Imagine if you love pets while your partner hates animals. You love chocolates while your partner loves fresh vegetable salad. These are simple things that could be compromised but when it comes to more serious things like your friends and your family, things would be different. If he hates your friends and your family; something is wrong and you could say that you married the wrong person.
No spark between you and your partner Partners must feel a strong attachment to each other. Without that spark between you and your partner, it means that your relationship will be boring. It means that you are married to the wrong person. If you kiss your partner and you feel nothing then you know that you married the wrong person. This is a bad sign because you know that things won’t work unless you try very hard. Unless it’s all right for you if your marriage is not exciting; there will be no problems at all.

It will be very hard to force someone to change for the sake of the relationship. If you married the wrong person, it could mean endurance and sacrifice or separation. What then should you do if you married the wrong person. 1. Talk about the problem with your partner. 2. Learn to accept flaws and adjust to situations. 3. Be open-minded. 4. Try your best to solve the problem. 5. Talk about the problem as it happens. Let's face it. There is no perfect marriage just as there are no perfect couples so when your marriage seems in trouble; act immediately before it's too late.

Seasonal changes greatly affect our skin. During summer time, heat penetrates and causes burns and pigmentation that most of us experience not knowingly. Our skin serves as a protective barrier from the outside world of our body; therefore we need to take extra care of it. Now that winter season is starting, we have to give more attentionto our skin condition as well. Most often than not, dry skin can be prevented by using moisturizers, lotion or any product for normal dry skin that you avail from any local store or pharmacy. Although not all cases of dryness will be resolved by normal dry skin treatments. In that case, if you have underlying skin problems or health problems, it is better to consult a medical practitioner about your skin dryness. Home remedies can also be done for normal skin dryness. Below are some ways you can do to help prevent your skin to dry specially this winter season.

1. Use Moisturizer
Regular moisturizers you have been using during summer may have work well, but during winter time you may need a moisturizer that contains glycerine, sorbitol or alpha-hydroxy acids that will help attract moisture to your skin. Products that is thick like petroleum jelly, ointments or oil-based are good to retain the moisture in the skin. But choose the oils that will not clog the pores like avocado oil, mineral oil, primrose oil or almond oils, stay away from shea butter or oil and vegetable oils. Use moisturizer at least twice a day (morning and night) or more. For many people, their skin tends to absorb moisturizer fast and needs to reapply more frequently throughout the day. For people having extra dryness of the skin, choose products that contain lactic acid or urea.
2. Don’t forget to put on sunscreen
Yes, even during winter season you still need sunscreen or sunblock. The sun rays can still penetrate light clouds, snow and fog. Exposure to sun will lead to skin problems like moles, wrinkles, and pigmentation and skin cancers. Even when the weather is cold, sun can still damage your skin. Make sure to apply sunscreen or sunblock 30 minutes before going out into the sun onto your face and hands (if exposed) and reapply every three hours if you linger outside under the sun for long period of time. Choose a sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 or more with UVA and UVB protection.
3. Avoid long and hot showers or baths
When winter strikes, burning-hot baths gives a better feeling after coming from the cold outdoors and soothe sore muscles. But the intense heat from the hot water breaks down the natural oil that serves as barrier of the skin, causing it to dry more, which happens less with warm or cold water. Short Warm shower or baths are better at this time. Limit your shower time to 5 minutes a day. Adding some oatmeal or baking soda to lukewarm water during shower or baths will help relieve itchy feeling caused by dryness. After you shower pat dry your skin, don’t rub.
4. Mild Soaps
If you’re used to your antibacterial or deodorant soap, you may not notice it but this products are contributing harm to your skin by removing the natural oil. During the winter months, use mild soap or liquid cleanser preferably unscented or lightly scented. Keep away your deodorant soap for next summer. Minimize the amount of soap you wash your body with and consider buying liquid cleansers that contain petrolatum that help seal moisture into the skin. You may also go mild with your laundry detergents, which may irritate sensitive, chapped skin.
5. Humidify
Heating systems either centralize or portable emits hot dry air. Using humidifier can add much needed

moist to the dry air. There are inexpensive solutions you can also do. Placing plants especially with large leaves around the room will be effective in increasing moisture in the air especially after you water them. Another will be, placing bowls of water in the room where you stay most of the time, water will evaporate and add moist in the air.
6. Drink ample amount of water
Hydrating does not only concentrate on the outside of the skin with moisturizers but also inside. It may be a common misconception, but drinking plenty of water is very good for the health not only for the skin. Although there are cases that even drinking 10-12 glasses of water a day still leaves the skin dry, medical attention may be needed to know what is really causing your skin dryness.
7. Scarf, hats and gloves
Clothing can aid in protecting you from the cold and freezing wind and dry air that will give way to drying of the skin. Wear scarf, hats and gloves to protect you. Avoid wearing wool or other rough materials that can cause irritation when you have dry skin. Don’t use gloves that are wet it will irritate more the skin, develop sores, and if your hands have eczema it will make it worst.
8. Soothe those chapped lips
Our lips we must not forget, it also needs hydration same as the skin. Lips don’t have oil gland that makes it easily dry out. We tend to lick our lips when we feel it dry which is wrong, don’t lick your lips it causes them to chap quickly. Protect them by using scarfs to cover during the cold or windy weather. Make sure the place where you always stay is moist; investing in humidifier helps a lot. Exposure to sun will make chapped lips worse; use plenty of lip balm that has sunscreen SPF 15 or more and reapply as needed.
9. Shaving
When the skin is dry, shaving can cause more irritation, if you are not use to using shaving creams, it’s the best time to have one. Practice on changing the blades as often than not. Always shave in the direction where the hair grows.
10. Slow down on the peels
When your facial skin is unusually dry, avoid those harsh peelings, mask, astringents or alcohol based toners that removes the normal oil of the skin. Better yet, avail for mild foaming cleanser or cleansing milk, toners with no alcohol content, and mask that gives hydration deeply into the skin, not the clay-based that will take the moistureout. Use these products less than the normal usage you do.
11. Don’t forget your feet
Icy, minty foot products are best for summer season, but not advisable during the winter. Our feet, especially when they are always exposed needs better caring. Lotions with petroleum jelly or glycerine is best
for the skin of your foot. Exfoliate once in a while to get rid of the dead skin and to help the lotion to be absorbed faster and deeper. Avoid using wet socks or shoes that may cause irritation, sores, or even make your eczema flare up if you have one on your foot.
12. Consult a Dermatologist
Not all over-the-counter products will soothe your dry skin. Some cases of dry skin need medical attention. Going to the local drugstore and asking a salesperson is not enough to give you advice. When you notice that the products you have bought don’t give the result you needed, it is the best time to see a dermatologist. Such specialist can assess and evaluate the skin problem you are having, plan the treatment you need to undergo and give you a detailed advice on how you will use the products you need. But the common misconception is expensive products are better than inexpensive ones, which is not.Most of the time, the extra price you pay is for packaging and marketing. The important thing in selecting and buying products you use is how it will respond to your skin, will it give the result you wanted and will you be comfortable using it, not by the money you paid for it. Aside from the weather, the products we use and the way we care for our skin, dryness can also be caused by bodily or hormonal changes, if you have a medical condition such as hypothyroidism, diabetes, eating disorder (causing malnutrition), other diseases and treatments is also a contributing factor. Other include: people of age over 64 have greater percentage of having dry skin. It is also important to know if you have family history of dry skin. Though these are the case, most people who have dry skin are perfectly healthy. Dryness of skin shouldn’t be left unnoticed for it can be a source of another skin problem. Dermatitis (Atopic Eczema) can result to untended drying of the skin manifested by swelling, redness and itchiness of the affected area. Cracked skin can be infected and will require more extensive treatment. When will you need an expert for your drying skin? Rule of thumb by experts, Try at home dry skin remedies like using lotions or moisturizers, humidifier, mild soaps or all the tips that was mentioned above for two weeks. But if still after doing so it hasn’t helped your drying skin, it is time to schedule an appointment. If specific signs and symptoms appear like abrupt or unexpected drying or itchiness of the skin, severe dryness that the skin cracked, swell, red, or bleeding, and when you have other medical conditions like poor blood circulation or diabetes it is also best to consult with an expert. Remember dryness of the skin may be as normal at it looks, but do not ignore to not suffer the consequence. Which is true for everyone, young or old, but especially for people who have chronic health conditions like diabetes. So if you are having concerns with your dry skin, schedule appointment with your doctor or a dermatologist. I am old, can I have braces treatment ? A common question the orthodontist (braces doctor) gets asked is: I am over 30 years old, can I have braces treatment? Adults form great proportion of patients attending for orthodontic treatment, recent research shows that adults (defined as those above the age of 18 years) make up approximately 22% in the USA and it would seem that this trend is being followed here in Kuwait. One explanation for this rise in adults seeking braces treatment, is that they are becoming increasingly conscious of the appearance of their teeth. There is pressure from the modern society on individuals to improve their shape and certainly the alignment of their teeth and their smile.
Although orthodontic (braces) treatment can be delivered to adults, there are some factors and facts that the potential patient needs to consider and be aware of. On average, most of the growth is completed by the age of 16 in females and 18 in males. Jaw growth is seen as an essential adjunct to orthodontic treatment and will facilitate dramatically the progress of treatment. In adults, whom are lacking growth, the treatment duration may be longer than treatment in adolescents. Periodontal disease (gum problems) and dental fillings/crowns/implants are more likely to be present in adults than in adolescents. That may add to the complexity of treatment. However, proving that the health of the teeth and their surrounding tissue is established and there is no “active” disease, it is still possible to proceed with the treatment. On the other hand, adults are more likely to comply with the instructions of the doctor since they made the decision to have the treatment and were not forced into braces. This is not the case in some of our adolescent patients because of the fact that their parents “wanted” them to have braces against their will. Finally, any adult seeking braces treatment should be aware of the new developments in more “Aesthetic” braces options than having the traditional “train-track” metal braces. The clear or ceramic brackets is one option where the braces parts will move teeth in the same way as the train-track braces but they are not showing clearly and are almost invisible. In addition, people may choose to have the” Lingual” or tongue side braces (Fig.1) i.e. braces components are placed on the teeth from the inside or the tongue side. That way they are completely invisible. Lastly, if the setup of the teeth is not too bad and only small amount of correction is required, a clear or invisible aligners can be used (Fig.2). The idea of this option is that people wear clear gum-shield type aligners which are pre-programmed in the dental laboratory and will move the teeth incrementally to achieve the perfect smile.

What are some of the most common dermatology problems that you face on a regular basis from patients? In Kuwait the most common medical problems are the acne, dry and sensitive skin and pigmentation.
Since now its winter and we are experiencing very cold weather this year, what advice would you give to our readers to protect their skin in this weather? During winter the most common problem is the dry skin and the patient should apply hydrating creams frequently and use good facial wash which suits the skin. Also apply sun block every 2 hours in order to avoid the pigmentation.
Now can you explain more about the “iSolaz Acne Treatment� that you have at your clinic? How does it work? It is a machine for acne treatment which treat at the same time the red papules and black heads. The machine applies vacuum on the black heads to extract the sebum out and then applies alight in order to kill the bacteria and remove the red papules.
How does is feel during the treatment? There is no pain during the session and the patient should use sun block and avoid the tan.
How many sessions are required? The patient needs between 6-8 session , 1 session every 3 weeks
Why would you suggest Isolaz Acne therapy to your patients? We suggest this treatment for the patient who failed to get result on the regular treatments for acne or if the patient has any contraindication with these treatment.
Are the results permanent? The result is permanent in the same papules but the acne will come back if the patient stop applying creams.

Dining out must have been one of them, whether you are cooking at home or have your cook there must be some special days or events where you dine out with family or friends, which is great with all the available options and the wide variety of restaurant’s styles and cafes. But always remember to make your smart choices, this is to maintain your health and affect your surrenders, so let's start now! This month, I will be highlighting your options for Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner and I will help you make smart choices in choosing what to have during these meals and without the need to have the sense of fullness or sacrificing your health. so let's make sure we remember those tips: Breakfast:
restrict the portion size, 1-2 tsp is enough.
Eggs - have them boiled, scrambled or omelets and avoid too much of the yolk, choose the egg whites to reduce cholesterol & ask for them to be cooked with vegetable oil.
Nuts - Include some roasted unsalted nuts somewhere; hazelnuts, almonds and walnuts are great options but restrict the portion to the very limit.
Meats - Avoid having high fat processed meats such as bacon, sausages and Marta Della instead be smart and choose lean smoked turkey slices. Dairy Products-Handle dairy products with care, choose skimmed or low fat milk products such as milk yogurts cheeses etc. Always remember to ask for lactose free or ask the waiter/waitress for any products that may contain milk if you have any intolerances or allergies or any intolerances with milk protein, most common is casein. Some foods that may contain milk include: waffles, pancakes, crepes, bagels, cakes, some breads or toasts, ice creams, chocolates, and all dairy products. Beverages - If you’re not eager to coffee choose fresh juices to boost your freshness of the day. Carbs - Choose whole grain products such as brown bread and whole-wheat cereals. Fruits - Include fruits somewhere either some fresh strawberries on top of your waffles or bananas on your crepe or kiwi fruit pineapples and apples or simply choose a fruit salad that nourishes you with its vitamins and minerals. Lunch & Dinner 1.Look for steamed, broiled, baked, grilled, poached or roasted dishes. In this way you will avoid excess saturated oils that are present in fried dishes that may affect your cholesterol. 2. Always ask for sauces or salad dressings to be on the side, and choose light Italian dressings or a light mix of lemon, balsamic vinegar and olive oil for salads. Much of the extra calories come hidden in creamy sauces or salad dressings and may interfere with weight managements. 3. Skip the soda. They're full of sugar and empty calories. A large soda can run over 300 calories and 80 grams of sugar an approximate average of 2-3 days worth for someone trying to lose weight 4. Avoid foods high in salt and most importantly if you see the salt shaker on the table don’t go directly shaking it on your dishes before even tasting if the food needs more salt or not. Extra salt raises your blood pressure and while you’re enjoying an outdoor meal I want you to have a stable calm pressure ;) 5. Always ask the waiter/waitress to ask the cook to trim fat off meat and skin off poultry, choose lean
meats and grilled burgers and avoid fried & processed meats. 6. Some restaurants might serve you a plate that satisfies a whole group, rather than 1 person, so be smart and stick to serving sizes that suits you and your body needs. More food on the plate is does not mean you have to finish the whole plate. 7. When it comes to desserts …… Try fruit sherbet or nonfat frozen yogurt or chose dark chocolates & reduce/avoid extra caramel toppings. Be precise about the quantity, eat slowly and enjoy every spoon, in order to stimulate your hormones to signal your brains that you will almost reach satiety. 8. Order your sandwich with reduced sauces. Mayonnaise and other fat-filled sauces contribute a lot of extra calories and saturated fat. More over choose whole grain or whole wheat bread options if possible not only because of their nutritional benefits but also because they give a longer duration of the fullness & satiety feeling. Before the end, I’d like to share with you my personal preference when it comes to choosing restaurants, chose French cuisines they always have a small sensible portion size & well presented food dishes. DENGUE FEVER SYMPTOMS:
Dengue is the most common mosquito-borne viral disease of humans that in recent years has become a major international public health concern. Dengue goes by other names, including "breakbone" or "dandy fever." Victims of dengue often have contortions due to the intense joint and muscle pain, hence the name breakbone fever. Slaves in the West Indies who contracted dengue were said to have dandy fever because of their postures and gait. Severe dengue (previously known as Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever) was first recognized in the 1950s during dengue epidemics in the Philippines and Thailand. Today, severe dengue affects most Asian and Latin American countries and has become a leading cause of hospitalization and death among children in these regions.
Many people, especially children and teens, may experience no signs or symptoms during a mild case of dengue fever. When symptoms do occur, they usually begin four to 10 days after the person is bitten by an infected mosquito. Signs and symptoms of dengue fever most commonly include:
doctor may recommend that you drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration from vomiting and high fever. Acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) can alleviate pain and reduce fever. Avoid pain relievers that can increase bleeding complications — such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve, others). If you have severe dengue fever, you may need:
• Fever, up to 106 F (41 C) • Headaches
• Supportive care in a hospital
• Muscle, bone and joint pain
• Intravenous (IV) fluid and electrolyte replacement
• Pain behind your eyes
• Blood pressure monitoring
You might also experience:
• Transfusion to replace blood loss
• Widespread rash • Nausea and vomiting • Minor bleeding from your gums or nose • The presence (the "dengue triad") of fever, rash, and headache (and other pains) is particularly characteristic of dengue fever. Most people recover within a week or so. In some cases, however, symptoms worsen and can become life-threatening. Blood vessels often become damaged and leaky, and the number of clot-forming cells in your bloodstream falls. This can cause: • Bleeding from the nose and mouth • Severe abdominal pain • Persistent vomiting • Bleeding under the skin, which may look like bruising • Problems with your lungs, liver and heart
TREATMENT: No specific treatment for dengue fever exists. Your
PREVENTION: A dengue fever vaccine is in development, but isn't generally available. If you're living or traveling in an area where dengue fever is known to be, the best way to avoid dengue fever is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes that carry the disease. If you are living or traveling in tropical areas where dengue fever is common, these tips may help reduce your risk of mosquito bites: • Stay in air-conditioned or well-screened housing. It's particularly important to keep mosquitoes out at night. • Reschedule outdoor activities. Avoid being outdoors at dawn, dusk and early evening, when more mosquitoes are out. • Wear protective clothing. When you go into mosquito-infe sted areas, wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, socks and shoes. • Use mosquito repellent. It can be applied to your clothing, shoes, camping gear and bed netting. For your skin, use a repellent containing at least a 10 percent concentration of DEET. • Reduce mosquito habitat. The mosquitoes that carry the dengue virus typically live in and around houses, breeding in standing water that can collect in such things as used automobile tires. Reduce the breeding habitat to lower mosquito populations. January 2013

Storage Foods are processed carbohydrates, alcohols and fats/oils. When consumed in caloric excess over the daily requirement (about 1,600 calories per day for women and 1,800 calories per day for men) they will result in the creation of body fat.

There can be no weight gain unless a person chooses to eat an excess of storage food. Having said that, science based twin studies reveal that 80% of identical twins born to parents who are obese will become obese even if raised in non-obese families. Notice that the number is 80%. That is very high, but not 100%. The difference between 80 and 100% is personal choice. Here is where choice enters. Some twins with the genetic predisposition to be fat simply chose not to eat storage foods in sufficient quantity to become obese. All processed carbohydrates, all alcohols and all oils/ fats are storagefoods. 98% of alcohol, 80 to 90% of processed carbohydrates and 95% of fats, once ingested, are available to be stored as excess body fat. Why not 100%? Because, the body expends energy (calories) in the process of absorbing and metabolizing food calories.
Let’s review again. What were the examples of processed carbohydrates given earlier? Fats Vs. Oils
Definition #15 Non-Storage foods are proteins and unprocessed carbohydrates. So rarely are they stored as fats that one can say with confidence that protein and unprocessed carbohydrate are not a cause of obesity. In fact, one could literally starve eating only very low fat meat. The U.S. Plains Indians often did! And one’s teeth would wear out before one could become obese eating raw vegetables! Definition #16 Starches are merely individual sugar molecules, bound end to end on branched chains like so many links in a chain or pearls on a string. Digestion breaks the links allowing the sugars to be absorbed directly into the blood stream. When sugar accumulates in the blood stream insulin is secreted allowing the cells to take up the sugar to be used as fuel. Insulin also signals for excess sugar to be converted into triglycerides and stored within adipose tissue (fat cells) around the body. Definition #17 Science Based Evidence means published peer reviewed randomized controlled double blind cross over studies of sufficient length and involving sufficient numbers to convince competent readers as to the validity of the conclusions indicated by the evidence. Whew! A long but necessary definition, because science-based evidence is the Gold Standard of science. There are other kinds of evidence of course, but only the Gold Standard is sufficiently free from bias to be considered a firm basis for forming new and reinforcing
The biochemical definition of fats is very complicated and beyond the scope of this article. Triglycerides,are the main form of fatty energy storage in humans and gram for gram contain almost three times the energy of pure sugar. Fatsare generally saturated and are solid at room temperatures, and oils are usually unsaturated and liquid at room temperatures. So using this definition we may consider solid fats as saturated and liquid oils as unsaturated. The major exception to this rule is the tropical oils, coconut, palm and palm kernel oils which contain major amounts of saturated oil! Coconut is 49% saturated, palm is 81 % saturated, and palm kernel is 86 % saturated! These oils are inexpensive, taste good and are used extensively in fast food restaurants. All oils, whether saturated or unsaturated, contain almost three times the calorie of pure sugar. Definition # 19 Ketones or ketone bodies are, for all practical purposes, markers of fat burning in the body. In other words, one cannot burn fat without producing ketones. Some ketones are excreted in the breath (that is why dieters have bad breath) and a smaller amount is excreted in the urine. In uncontrolled diabetics the lack of insulin prevents sugar from entering the cells and forces the body cells to burn only fat and protein (muscle) and in the process producing very large amounts of ketones. In diabetics, untreated ketosis can turn into diabetic keto-acidosis, a potentially fatal condition. This is not a problem in the normal dieter whose body produces ample insulin. In the normal dieter the ingestion of a small amount of unprocessed carbohydrate will easily keep the amount of ketones produced under control. During dieting for weight loss the production of ketones means one is actually burning fat. Ketone
{Health/Wellness} breath means saying bye, bye to fat. Said another way, to lose weight is to create ketones. One cannot burn fat without creating ketones; therefore ketones are the good guys in the world of dieting for weight loss. Jean Ann was a 34-year-old married school principle with two children ages 10 and 8 years that presented to my office complaining of weight problems and cyclic depression since her first pregnancy.

Her gynecologist explained that many women experience carbohydrate cravings just prior to and during monthly menses, and had offered to put her on Prozac® for her depression and premenstrual symptoms. But, Jean had refused remembering that many of her friends had been on antidepressants and gained even more weight. None of her physicians ever asked her about binge eating or purging behavior. I explained the dangers of binging and purging, specifically that vomiting could cause:

Jean Ann’s BMI = 24.62 and from our table we see that her BMI falls within the upper range of normal. She is technically neither overweight nor obese. Jean’s weight history was remarkable only for its familiarity. She had maintained a weight of 47 kg or104 lbs. plus or minus a pound or two until her first pregnancy where she gained 23 kg or 50 lbs. She was able to lose down to 64 kg or 140 lbs. when she became pregnant with her second child and thence gained another 14 k or 30 lbs. Thereafter she had dieted constantly and her weight had fluctuated between her present 63 kg or 139 lbs. and 73 kg or 160 lbs. Jean reported that her best success was with the Atkins® weight loss diet where she typically was able to lose 4.5 kg or 10 to 7 kg or 15 lbs. the first week. However, thereafter she found that each pound became more and more difficult. She usually ended the diet after two to three weeks with a binge and purge cycle (eating a huge meal and then intentionally vomiting). Her problem foods were reported as processed carbohydrates, especially just prior to and during her monthly periods when she would become depressed and often binge on bread, bagels, cookies, donuts and chocolate. She admitted vomiting purposely after these binging episodes. She also admitted frequent laxative use for weight control. Jean Ann had reported her weight problem and carbohydrate cravings to her gynecologist and her primary care physician, but neither had offered advice beyond a suggestion to join Weight Watchers. Her primary care doctor had told her that women often gain weight with age and that
She was also told that frequent laxative use could lead to dependence, and in rare cases electrolyte abnormalities leading to serious illness or even death. We discussed her frustration with her weight, her intense dysphoria (feelings of anxiety, depression, or unease) surrounding the issue of her inability to maintain what she thought of as her ideal weight. She shared with me her feelings of being out of control and then the shame and guilt she experienced after each binging episode. I explained the science-based evidence that proves the role of brain hormones in weight gain, hunger, carbohydrate cravings, fat deposition, energy balance and mood. I offered that, as I saw it, she was trying to do the impossible by attempting to use will power to will her gut, fat cells, female and brain hormones to come under control.

Over the subsequent months the New Science of Weight Control taught Jean Ann the difference between stumbling along in the dark and following a path illuminated by science-based evidence. She began to understand the New Science of Weight Control philosophy and she began to regain a sense of self control and psychological balance. Once Jean Ann understood the role that female hormones play during menses, amplifying her monthly bouts of anxiety, depression, carbohydrate cravings and water retention, she was ready to participate with us in designing a plan to deal with her problem. That done she became eager to put her plan into effect. Following the plan allowed Jean Ann to move her weight downward within a comfort zone born of science-based knowledge. Her success gave her a strong sense of personal empowerment that allowed her to banish the need for maladaptive binging and purging behavior. After six months her weight stabilized at 54 kg or 118 lbs. (BMI 20.9), a weight she is now happy with. But more importantly, though she still experiences PMS, depression and the cascade of negative emotions that used to dominate her life each month during her menstrual cycle, and often stimulated a compulsion toward maladaptive compensatory behavior, she is now able to use her new science-based tools to push the right hormone buttons and maintain her equilibrium. Best of all, with her new sense of self-empowerment, she is able to cognitively deal with her life stressors and maintain control without succumbing to maladaptive behavior. She no longer finds purging tobe a realistic method of dealing with her problems. She understands her problem and has a science-based adaptive plan that works!
Is Jean Ann a success? Absolutely! Jean Ann has been an adherent of the New Science of Weight Control® for more than 10 years now. She has experienced weight excursions and even occasional exacerbations of her old habit of inappropriate behavior, yet each time period of maladaptive behavior has been of shorter duration and each has ended with her return to the program for what she has begun to call her periodic tune up. Jean Ann’s success is not an exception. She represents the overwhelming majority of the New Science of Weight Control proponents and adherents who as a group average over 15 years working the program. Once personally empowered by sciencebased evidence, adequate support, individual experience and resultant health she has determined through personal experience that the end result is worth the daily commitment, one day at a time for the rest of her life. Mad Woman and Kardashimania There is probably not a single adult person or infant in Kuwait that doesn’t know which celebrity visited the country at the end of November – yes of course you know whom I am talking about, right? I assume that I was one of the few (or maybe even the only one!) not wanting to keep up with the all-around celebrity who gets too much media attention for having done nothing much in her life except looking good (I have to give her that), and…Hmm.. Looking good? Oh, yes, and having had a turbo marriage and divorce within few months a short while ago! Whatever her accomplishments, this celebrity doll decided to have a Middle East tour and bless Kuwait with her presence for a day or two. Nothing could be further from the truth as to think that I would have wanted to be anywhere near the locations where thousands of fans waited for their
goddess to show up and sell them milkshakes, cloth collections and sweet smiles. None of the items was on my list of favorite things and I therefore decided to attend another, even though less exciting, but meaningful event Friday night that was dedicated for a charity cause in Kuwait. Once I arrived at the hotel where the event took place, and made my way through the crowd of people from the reception to the ball room bad news was the first thing that embraced me at the nicely decorated event room – Kim Kardashian supposedly stayed in this hotel that night!! Looking at happy faces, that were beaming of gratitude by the news, I realized that I was a minority even there, among reasonable adults and their kids that wanted to do something good and give back to the society; they all were under the spell of Kardashimania! My night was ruined. I decided to discreetly leave the hotel. Sneaking from the ball room to the reception I was welcomed by throngs of excited youngsters holding their smart phones and cameras ready for a quick photo shoot and looking behind me with desperate expectation in their eyes. While elbowing my way through the impatient herd of fans I heard sudden screaming and squeaking behind me; before I could even blink the wave of people, and me trapped within, pushed away from the reception and moved towards the ball room. You must be kidding me!!, I thought. While trying to fight my way out of the yelling crowd I got stuck next to a teen who’s vocal cords must have been out of steel and as a proof of that she screeched directly into my left ear leaving me deaf for the rest of the night. I gave up. Grasping for air while being squeezed between crying, caterwauling, eye-rolling fans I finally heard the reason for this collective seizure – the beloved goddess was in the event facilities next to the reception! I shuffled towards

my event room thinking that since I was back at that door again I better get in there and enjoy the charity show or I would get killed by the enamored bundle of cheering teens. The security guy, after noticing me desperately waving my torn up ticket for the show, pulled me out of fainting, already passed out, or at the top of their lungs screaming swarm and opened the door to the ball room. I was greeted by astonished eyes and impatient questions: did you see her?? We heard that she is outside!!! Has everybody lost their mind I wondered while cynically replying back: Yes she is out there!! Even before the sentence escaped my mouth I was pinned to the door, this time from inside of the event room, and bodies pressed against me in an effort to get through me. I couldn’t believe this was happening to me!! You can’t get out, there are teens gone crazy behind this door that want to come in – do you hear me??, I yelled… About an hour later, when hotel security finally managed to dissolve the fan club both sides of the door I felt like I had been smacked around all night and flattened from my face to my toes. Still deaf and tired to my bones I left the hotel thinking, that even though I didn’t see the reality TV star every cell in my body had experienced what it means to be a devoted fan of hers in Kuwait!

Where did that come from…? Cue Michael Jackson’s hit song “Wanna Be Starting Something.” Lo and behold, it is 2013. Fortunately for you and me, the Mayan’s were kinda off about the world ending in 2012. In terms of your health and well being, what’s changed? On the eve of the New Year, you like me, were probably up to the eye-balls with resolutions that at one point, seemed solid, unbreakable and achievable. February’s around the corner and like Cinderella, has the clock gone past midnight and these once-were-warrior likeaspirations turned well, into pumpkin pie? Michelle Pfeiffer was once quoted saying, “I’m afraid of what I am, what I’m not, what I might become, what I might never become.”
One of the most challenging things about a fitness resolution is starting it, simply because you’re about to embark on a journey that at times, may see you questioning it in the first place. When you start a fitness resolution, ask yourself why, what is the purpose? My personal training clients would at times tell me that they’re doing it for aesthetic reasons. While I can understand you wanting to look fit for the beach (go summertime!), it’s important to build your fitness goals on a solid foundation as from a solid foundation will you achieve solid results. For example, taking up exercise because you want to feel fit and healthy. It doesn’t help that Kuwait’s been tagged as one of the top 10 countries with a percentage of the adult population with a BMI (Body Mass Index: weight to height ratio) of over 30. 29.9% of the females here have a BMI of 30+ compared to 27.5% of their male counterparts. That’s big news… and big people, people. Not wanting to be a part of this glorious statistic, you suddenly find yourself doing 45 minutes of cardiovascular exercise (i.e. a light jog along the beach front) 3 times a week. Now that you’re exercising, you may as well change your nutrition as why still eat all that silly sugary stuff when you’re taking exercise seriously? So you cut out the junk food and the soda pops and opt instead for a diet consisting of fresh vegetables, fruit, lean meat, lots of water and a sensible amount of brown rice.
If you keep up with this schedule of eating right and frequent exercise, there is no doubt that you will feel fit and healthy and as a side bonus, the pounds will fall off. But how long should you keep doing this eating right and exercising schedule for? Well until it becomes secondnature. In a 2009 psychological study conducted by the University College of London, Phillipa Lally et al recruited 96 people who were interested in forming a new habit. These participants could either eat a piece of fruit with lunch or go for a daily 15 minute run. Lally and her colleagues discovered that it was only after the 66 day mark did their chosen activity become habitual. In fitness, if you worked out 3-4 times a week and ate sensibly, you may well start seeing results after the 90 day mark. Hang on Resh, that sounds like a lot of work, keeping it up for 3 months and more. It is but like I said, your fitness resolution has to come from somewhere solid. Moreover nothing will ever eventuate if you don’t stop eating that pumpkin pie and start working your way to achieving your once-were-warrior like-fitness-aspiration, right?

Adlah Al Sharhan is Kuwait's trailblazing Chef, a pioneer and so passionate about about food that she actually needs to be cooking and creating at "all times". Its quite safe to say that she is like a fish out of water when not doing what she loves most. She lives, breaths and sleeps food. A celebrity in her own right Adlah has twenty-three thousand followers on Instagram.
Adlah knew that she wanted to become a Chef and hoped to study Culinary Art, but instead took the smart route, studied Organic Chemistry and Human Resources to please her father and to have something to fall back on. Training and and kitchen outfitting requirements are also part of the services offered. They have a dedicated space with a spectacular view on the 11th floor of West End Tower where they go

هل هناك فرق خليجية اوعربية اخرى ؟ نعم يوجد هناك الفريق اإلماراتي و القطري و الذى يعتبر احدثالفرق اخلليجية و لكن ميتاز الفريق الكويتي عنهم بآن جميع الالعبني من اجلنسيه الكويتيه .

ما ابرز املشاكل و املصاعب التيتواجهون هاعلى ارض الواقع في ممارسة اللعبة ؟ ابرز املشاكلعدم توفر املكاناملناسب للتدزيب ,سوىصالة تزلج و حيدة تتسع ملكان اللعبة و جمهورها و هي تابعة لشركة املشروعاتالسياحية كما انصغر املساحة اضطرتنا الى االمتناع عن قبول املزيد من الشباب فيصفوف الفريق وذلك لعدم توفر املكان اخلاص بنا ملمارسة تدريباتنا باستمرار و فيأيوقت مناسب لنا ،حيث ننتظر حلني اغالق الصاله و اخالء روادها من ثم استخدام الصاله للتدريب.

How Your Phone Changed Photography, Forever The first photograph was taken in 1826, but it took nearly 75 years before Kodak made theBrownie, and photography became possible for ordinary people. The next 30 to 60 years saw photography become progressively more accessible, with the first electric flash, first commercially successful 35mm film, the Polaroid camera, and the Kodak Instamatic, which sold 50 million units in seven years. (The iPhone, by the way, sold as many in just two and a half.) Every Christmas party, every birthday, every high school graduation was peppered with fathers wielding flash bulbs. Yet the changes we've experienced in just the past 20 years have represented revolution, not evolution. Both Photoshop and the digital point and shoot came to be in the early 1990s, but it was their more pocketable grandchildren—the camera phone and photo-editing apps—that have changed everything. Suddenly, making dramatic improvements to a photograph hastily taken was not only possible, it was free and mindbogglingly easy. And taking 100 more photos cost nothing, so cameras weren't just for birthdays and graduations anymore, they were for the everyday. Often, multiple times a day. And most important of all, cameras not only started to fit our pockets, but they were likely already in them-for most of us carried a cell phone, and nearly every phone now contained a camera. All of a sudden, our relationship to this thing changed dramatically. No longer an art form, and no longer a way to document life events, the photograph became a way to communicate and share experiences. Twenty years ago we took a photograph, had it printed, and kept it safe in an album we brought out once a year. Now we snap a photo, or more likely a dozen, share them online on the spot, and forget about them just as quickly. Opportunities for photography are as common as a phone call, sometimes more so. In fact, I've now taken a hundred times more photos with my iPhone than I have taken phone calls. And I upgraded my last phone to improve my camera quality-not my phone quality. Being a photographer-someone who shoots to create art or communicate an idea, whether lofi or in double-digit megapixels-once required thousands of dollars of equipment and pounds of lenses and add-ons. Sammy; A Very Special Dog In the spring of 2005, far out in the barren desert of Kuwait, a small dog was struggling to survive in the worst conditions imaginable. Seemingly endless sandstorms and 50 degree heat are by no means unusual. This dog was no ordinary dog. Quite to the contrary, this dog was singularly extra -ordinary. Both in her personality and in her genetic makeup, this dainty canine was utterly amazing. No one knew this beautiful animal was about to be tested in every possible way, or that she was about to single-handedly prove herself and her breed to be truly worthy of notice. This is the story of Sammy, the dog that changed the face of animal welfare in Kuwait forever. Originally published in 2008 survive? As if to answer me, Sammy came to my building the following week, together with her two timid companions. I gave her the joyful greeting of belly rubbing and high-pitched fanfare that had proved so successful before. She was just as happy to receive it this time. I put out dog food for her and her compatriots, but, as if to confirm my longheld belief that dog food is not food at all, all three of these wild dogs spurned my offering. Ironically, whatever these animals were living on in the desert was better than what man has determined is fit for dog. Their visit was short, and I was surprised to see them head off in the opposite direction from where they had come. Apparently these dogs considered the entire base their territory.
In the beginning of 2005, Ayeshah Al-Humaidhi , along with several other volunteers, was struggling to build the first animal shelter in the country. After years of dreaming and months of tedious work finding land, designing buildings, and raising funds, construction began in May of 2005. This project, which had begun with a vision, was about to culminate with a state-of-the-art animal sheltering facility. This is where Sammy comes into the story. When I first met Sammy, she was hiding in some tall grass in an abandoned quarter of Ahmed Al-Jaber Air Base. This base is a remote military outpost in the western desert of Kuwait. My first impression of Sammy was of a timid but friendly dog with a desire to be amenable but a hard-learned lack of trust in people. I quickly reassured her by kneeling down, and speaking to her in my highest falsetto, the voice calculated by animal lovers everywhere to be the most inviting a human can use. A short distance away stood her fellows; a burly, gnarly old male, and a young, lithe female with a mottled coat. Both were much more wary of my arrival. approached Sammy cautiously, and proceeded to introduce myself. She responded by rolling onto her back and inviting me to rub her belly, a past time that remains her favorite to this day. Needless to say, I couldn’t comprehend how such a docile, healthy, and beautiful animal could be abandoned, neglected, or even born in such a place. I was shocked to find such a friendly animal in such a forgotten area. Ahmed Al-Jaber Air Base is in no way an oasis in the desert. The base is a shell of its former self, having been bombed extensively in the first gulf war and used to this day without much in the way of repairs. The base sits far in the western desert, beyond the Burgan Oil Fields, isolated, and foreboding. It is not a place for the sentimental or the faint of heart. It takes fortitude to live in such a place, and over the course of the next few weeks and months, I was to find that Sammy had fortitude, and then some. After my first encounter with this mysterious desert dog, I guess you could say I was enchanted. I had so many questions. How had she come to be here? Why was she so friendly? How did she
After Sammy and her gang figured out where to find me, their visits became more frequent. Her friends, now named Rex and Sylvester, were beginning to allow me to feed them and eventually to touch them, though not in the happy mannered way that Sammy seemed to enjoy it. They began to stay for longer periods too. I would stand in the field beside my office and watch them play, eat, sleep, and hunt. Watching them hunt was amazing. Besides the Wolf, most people have no concept of a dog that actually hunts for its food. There are hunting breeds, sure, but they are mostly used to find or retrieve prey. These dogs were actually hunting, capturing, and eating Kangaroo Mice, lizards, insects, and birds. Their agility is unfathomable to the layperson, and unseen even among many dog owners. About two months after we first met, Sammy came to visit, and she didn’t leave again. Instead, she burrowed under a shed and proceeded to deliver eleven puppies. I can’t say that I was entirely surprised. She had been putting on weight for a while, but I was amazed, and in many ways honored that she felt safe enough with me to deliver her young nearby. It is a testament to the relationship between man and dog that even a wild dog can trust a human with their most valued possessions, indeed with their very survival. At that time in my life, I was flattered, shocked, and completely at a loss of what to do. There is obviously nothing

their situation. They were being kept in a very large space, and they managed to get into trouble in every possible way. Whether it was digging out and scaring me to death, or figuring out how to get into the dog food, they were always set on some adventure. There was never a time when at least two puppies weren't wrestling around and creating their own brand of chaos. We did the best we could with what we had. Then, suddenly, we were discovered. Abandoned building or no, it still belonged to the Kuwaiti Air Force, and I was given 48 hours to vacate. I panicked. I didn’t know how I was supposed to safely move 16 dogs in 48 hours or where to for that matter. In desperation, I sought the only resource I knew of: Ayeshah Al-Humaidhi, founder of the very newly formed Kuwait Society for the Protection of Animals and Their Habitat (K’S PATH). With the shelter still several weeks from even partial completion, in 24 hours I built a fence, and by the end of the next day, all 17 dogs were safely removed from their desert inferno and dispersed between Ayeshah’s house and the temporary shelter. Sammy went to live with Ayeshah and the smallest pups, while the remainder went to the temporary shelter with a surrogate father. more miraculous than the birth of a new life, especially eleven new lives, but in the desert, new lives are always in jeopardy. The desert embodies the phrase ‘survival of the fittest.’ Of eleven puppies, it is unlikely more than one, two at the most, would survive to adulthood. As if that wasn’t enough, starvation, dehydration, and heat exhaustion are some of the most painful ways to die. I had to do something, and in 2005, options for stray dogs were pretty limited in Kuwait. So I came up with a completely haphazard plan, and as soon as the puppies became mobile, I loaded them up with Sammy and took them to an abandoned building on the far side of the base. I constructed fencing out of every piece of scrap fence and wire I could find. I soon had a habitat in which these dogs could survive the summer, and I started buying puppy food in bulk. As if all of that weren’t enough, the ever-reclusive Sylvester, whom I hadn’t seen in over a month, turned out to be nursing a litter of five puppies elsewhere on base. By now I had set a precedent I couldn’t walk away from, so Sylvester and her five puppies were brought into my habitat, bringing my total number of dogs to 18. Of course, tragedy struck again eventually. Rex, our beloved wild dog, was struck by a car and killed. Shortly thereafter, Sylvester was mysteriously injured, and died shortly thereafter, leaving behind Sammy to nurse 16 puppies, the oldest of which were now about five-weeks. Fortunately for us, even amidst the hardest times, there were also periods of immense joy. Puppies are insufferable, incorrigible, and dauntlessly bound to have fun, regardless of
Sammy was in heaven. Instead of collecting lizards and putting them on her dirt bed, she was now collecting plush dog toys and putting them on her new soft bed, all the while making sure that her puppies had the best toys in the house. Sammy, at the age of roughly 10 months, having mothered 11 puppies and raised 16 puppies in the dead of summer, was now retired. Four months later, Sammy boarded a plane bound for Vermont, USA, to start a new and worry free chapter of her life. She now lives with two school teachers, Ray, and Jennifer and their sons Thomas and Sam. If you ask them, Sammy (now Jazzy) is the greatest dog on earth. She takes walks along the Connecticut River no less than twice per day, has at least three beds of her own, and has an ever-growing collection of soft dog toys. She doesn’t have to hunt for her food any more, it arrives twice daily in a bowl on the floor, and she doesn’t have to fight for survival, just for a place on the couch next to Ray and Jennifer. Sammy changed Kuwait because she was the first. She started the K’S PATH shelter. When the shelter was on the verge of opening, she forced it to open sooner. Her puppies were the very first shelter residents when, less than 1/3 constructed, we started housing dogs there. Her transport and subsequent adoption in Vermont was a first for K’S PATH, and it set a precedent. One of her sons now lives in Texas. One of her daughters lives in Oregon. Most importantly to me, Sammy introduced me to Ayeshah, who is now my wife. Together with a dedicated staff of volunteers and employees, we run K’S PATH. No matter how big we get, and no matter how many animals we help, we will never forget Sammy, the dog that started it all. In fact, I’m writing this in Vermont, and I’ve just been to see Sammy (Jazzy). She says hello.

BOOK CLUB Twilight I’m sure most of you heard about the famous Saga of Twilight or have seen it in the cinema or on TV. As it came to an end in the theatres this past November, I decided to start the New Year with all of you lovely readers with the greatest love story of our model times; the story of Edward and Bella, today’s Romeo and Juliet with a twist. The story of Twilight begins in a small town in Washington State called Forks; its population doesn’t exceed a few thousand people. Bella moved in town with her father who is the Chief of police when she decided she needed to give her mother and her new husband some space to travel around the country because of his career in sports, guiltless. As she is not a people person she hopes that her moving in a new town and a new school will not catch other’s attention. As much as she wanted that to happen, no secrets can stay safe in Forks, without realizing it she becomes the center of attention at the local high school, gaining everyone interest and likes, except for one, Edward Cullen. She expected her time in Forks to be as boring as the town itself until she met him. It bothered her so much that he didn’t like her, or so she thought. Edward’sbizarre behavior towards Bella, as well as his charm makes her fall for him unconsciously. What she doesn’t know is that Edward is a one hundred and nine year old vampire who lusted for her blood and can easily kill her. On the other hand, Edward is a vampire who can read people’s minds except for Bella’s, which intrigued him, drove him crazy to try and figure her out. The Death of Bees
White Dog Fell from the Sky
Scottish author Lisa O'Donnell's debut novel, The Death of Bees, received a positive reception when it was released in the U.K. in March 2012. This darkly funny though sometimes obscene novel tells the story of two girls with bad parents who decide not to tell anyone when those parents die. The girls befriend a gay neighbor who is also an outcast, but who wants to help them. Told from alternating viewpoints, the story moves quickly, but it is no fairy tale.
This novel has been compared to Abraham Verghese's Cutting for Stoneand the location -- Botswana -reminds us of the fabulous No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. This is a story of a man forced to flee South Africa in 1976 after he witnesses a murder by a South African authority. He was a medical student, but takes a job as a gardener in Botswana. When he goes missing, the woman he works for sets out to find him.

The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier is historical fiction about a Quaker woman who moves to Ohio from England and befriends some other women who are helping with the Underground Railroad. Chevalier charmed readers with The Girl with the Pearl Earring and other historical fiction novels with real characters, such as Burning Bright. This is her first novel about American history.
George Saunders' collection of short stories, Tenth of December, combine humor and depth, insight and feeling. The characters are varied, but the cross section provides a look at contemporary lives and pushes readers to ask big questions.

Convertible Furniture Convertible furniture is a portable alternative to traditional furniture. It is also known as collapsible, transformable, foldable and compact furniture. Due to the lack of space and storage in some houses, many prefer to use such furniture. It can be folded into a fraction of its original size or convert into completely new objects. Designers nowadays are using different materials like plywood sheets and metal to create sustainable, collapsible furniture. History Foldable furniture has been with us for over two millenniums. Ancient Greek vases dating back to the sixth century B.C., had paintings of foldable chairs. Nomads also carried furniture with the same concept on their backs. They used lightweight designs and materials that can easily be disassembled such as beds and kitchen stools. Designing small houses later on became crucial in Japanese architecture. Rooms were not designated to a specific function. Instead, portable furniture was used to convert spaces.
Designs Convertible furniture takes many shapes and forms. One example of foldable furniture is Flexible Love. Flexible Love is a very adaptable chair (see Figure 1), which is designed by a Taiwanese designer, Chishen Shiu. It is made completely of recycled paper and wood, which makes it environmentally friendly. Its creative design stretches to seat more than one person. It comes in 3 sizes that seat eight people, sixteen people, or twenty people.

Another form of convertible furniture is Doc, a sofa bed designed by Bonbon Trading, which folds out into a bunk bed for two (see Figure 2). “All covers are fully removable and washable” according to Bonbon, and it also provides a safe ladder and a protection barrier. Bibliochaise, also known as Chair Library, is another smart piece of furniture, which has a dual function. It is by Italian designer business Nobody & Co. The chair has shelves to store up to 5 meters of books and keep them at arms reach. It comes in black or white with cotton or leather cushions in a variety of colors. (see Figure 3) The Fletcher Capstan Table shown in Figure 4 is a wooden table designed by David Fletcher. It can expand while preserving its original circular form either electrically or manually. The best aspect of this table is that it “doubles its seating capacity, from six to twelve, at the push of a button 90 Degree furniture, by Dutch designer Louwrien Kaptein, is another lightweight unit created to serve artists. It consists of four room dividers, each with a different function. sitting and sleeping, a kitchen unit and a storage unit. The closed panels open in a 90 degrees angle. Each unit is both a room divider and a functional piece of furniture. The interior is easy to move and usable in any space, preferable close to a toilet and bathroom.

Another unique piece of furniture is the Ecobank, by designer Marius Goetze. This convertible furniture is made of plywood. It has a fixed structure which can be flipped into 3 different positions, serving as a desk, table, and a podium. (see Figure 6)

The elderly, disabled people, and young children may have a problem trying to assemble the piece or convert it. Not only that, but some furniture pieces might be dangerous around children.
Advantages of Convertible Furniture There are many advantages gained from using convertible furniture. Some designs are very compact hence they utilize space efficiently. Having a convertible object, which can be used for many functions like the Marius Goetze Desk saves space by providing 3 objects using the same piece of furniture.
Exploiting Convertible Furniture Transformable furniture can be utilized in many places. For instance, it can be used in dwellings to provide extra furniture (e.g. beds, sofas, and shelves) or to offer more storage. It can also be used as multifunctional objects to aid students or instructors in academic institutions. Another place to use such furniture is at commercial offices, where companies are constantly trying to cut down on furniture expenses. This method is also applied in airplanes, where more than one function is integrated within 1 seat. Airplane kitchens also use these types of furnishings for storage.
Also, convertible furniture is flexible, and its simple design makes it relatively easy to use. It adapts to serve
Convertible Furniture in Kuwait It was observed that convertible furniture is mostly used in countries other than Kuwait like Japan. Hence, people living in Kuwait were asked about their opinion regarding this furniture and if they would consider buying it. Most of the people were only familiar with the traditional sofa bed. As soon as other designs were demonstrated, they started showing more interest in transformable furniture. However, they all agreed on the fact that they would not use it in their homes here in Kuwait unless they had very little space. Some mentioned that it was a very good idea to utilize it in their beach houses, farm houses, waiting rooms, and in guest rooms.

For example, convertible cribs can later be used as toddler beds then full size beds. Every one of us wishes to save the life of our environment. Choosing eco-friendly furniture is one step towards that dream. Many designers use recycled materials or organic products as a contribution to saving our planet. One of the best things about transformable furniture, is the fact that it is considered as a cost-effective choice. It can save a lot of money; instead of buying many furniture pieces, one can choose an object, which converts to serve more than one need.

Disadvantages of Convertible Furniture Although convertible furniture has many great advantages, it has a few drawbacks. The fact that it is smartly designed might be an obstacle when the furniture piece gets broken. The user might find difficulties looking for a carpenter since they are unfamiliar with such designs. Another negative aspect of these furnishings is that they might not blend well
One elderly lady was more worried about her grandchildren than providing extra space. She was concerned whether the furniture would be a threat to their wellness or not, and if they would ruin her furniture whenever they came to visit. Men, on the other hand, were more concerned about the price, maintenance, and quality. In general, they would use this furniture if its price was reasonable and if there were spare parts available. It was also preferred if the piece was repairable at home. Another issue they had on mind was whether this furniture is available in Kuwait or it had to be imported from other countries. In conclusion, it was observed that most of the people in Kuwait were interested in such furniture because of its uniqueness, unlike people in native countries were convertible furniture is essential to save space. Alina Tacu The Romanian Author Living in Kuwait. Alina Tacu has written a book about Kuwait and it is very likely that she is the first Romanian-born writer who captures, in her book, “Kuwait, a Romanian writer greets you at your home”:insights of an expat into the Middle East, the Kuwaiti reality “at its home.” The description is pictorial, poetic, from which we can understand that, due to some blessed circumstances, as well as to some moral and ethical factors deeply implemented into the Arab conscience, each native can be a part of Allah’s kingdom. CityPages had the honor of meeting Alina recently and have an exclusive interview where she discussed the process of writing the book and what inspired her.
Please introduce yourself to our readers? I am, so to say, a multiple personality. When I was a kid I wanted to become an Egyptologist. Unfortunately, this was not a dream to come true in a communist Romania where I was born. My mother is Romanian and my father is Greek. I lived all over the world but most importantly, each place gave me a new experience. My early years were spent in a Music school where I studied cello and piano. Then I studied languages: English, French, Italian and Latin. I speak them fluently, along with Romanian. I also speak a little Slovak since I spent three years in Slovakia being the personal tutor of the Secretary of the state. I have a Master degree in American literature and another Master in Journalism issued by the University of Illinois. I am an international Debate judge and I actually released Karl Popper Debate program in Romania. I worked for the Soros Foundation then I taught seminars at Al. I. Cuza University in Iasi, my home city. I am proud to be the niece of the only Romanian Noble Prize laureate George Emil Palade, my grand-uncle by father. I am also proud to be the daughter of a national hero, my father, Alexandru Tacu who was a great contributor to bringing democracy in Romania after being held in communist prisons for years. I published five books, the first four in Romanian, poetry and essays.
When and how did you come to Kuwait? As Americans would say to take a break and think: “This is a good question”. I got a phone call from a recruiting agency offering me a position as a teacher in Kuwait. I did not know much about this country but I had always been fascinated by the Orient with my addicted reading of The Arabian Nights. So I decided to go to the interview in pursue of a change, something www.citypageskuwait.com
new. And I was going to be close to Egypt. I visited the country twice but just to have an encounter with the shadows of pharaohs and the ineffable smile of the Sphinx.
What was your first experience in Kuwait and how has it changed gradually? When I landed in Kuwait the first impression I had when I got out the airport was that I stuck my head in a heated oven. Then, walking through the parking lot I thought I was visiting a luxury car show room. It was 3 o’clock in the morning. When trying to get some sleep a loud alarm woke me up. It was the morning prayer. I knew about the call from my readings but it was really bizarre to hear the muezzins chanting. The culture shock was tremendous: the mélange between obsolete but paradoxically still modern way of clothing: dishdasha and abaia and the mundane blue jeans, the dust , the way you had to talk to people, no eye contact, no touching. This was so different from the way I was raised. I am basically Greek and Greeks are very open and love to pat, touch and hug. During the first months I was confused and trying to work my way. In December 2007 I was saying to myself that as soon as the school year is finished I will just leave. In March I was already sure I would come back. And there is this mesmerizing wish to come back…so here I am, the sixth year in Kuwait.
When and how did you get the idea of writing a book on Kuwait? When I left home I was writing as a freelancer for two daily newspapers in Romania. They asked me not to cease and to become a “correspondent” better said, an “observer” of the Arab world. And this is because the perception of European people about the Middle East is limited to “terrorism”, “suicidal
bombs”, “fundamentalism” a way of seeing things in black and white only. When I got here and started to meet people and see places, I realized that Kuwait is a work in process and the society is so mixed that you may call this country a “melting pot” as America is called. Then I really started to observe – a totally different culture. Probably the difference made it interesting. I gradually learnt how to talk and look at people, how to restrain my impulse of being too expansive and after a while everything made sense. This is when I started to write about Kuwait for the two newspapers in Romania. I did not write articles, I wrote literature. And people loved it.
How long did it take to complete the book? All the correspondence I wrote in my first two years of staying in Kuwait became the book. I released it in Romania in 2009 and it became a best-seller because people were curious to read about something else than the things mentioned above. The book tells about people, religion, places, customs, weddings, politics and even infrastructure. I admit that my perception changed as I started to feel that I belong but I would not modify a thing in the text. And this is because it writes about “fresh” feelings and a brand new experience.

Who had helped you in the process of gathering the information and completing the book? Everything I wrote in the book is based on talking to people around. I had a good friend who introduced me to a famous lawyer who gave me precious information about public things. Then, I had my colleagues in school. They were Arabic teachers coming from all Middle East so I got information from different Arabic sides. And there is, of course, my own view on things.I like to believe that I tried my best to make an objective observation.
Did you face any obstacles or problems during the process? There was a problem of adjustment. Before I came to Kuwait I did some research on the Internet about the country. I made up an idea about past history of pearl fishing and living in tents. But in the beginning the impact was by far not I expected to be. It was a challenge to change my habits because of a major behavioral switch. After a while I met Kuwaiti people and I found out they were good and hospitable. That was the moment when I realized that the famous image of the Middle East was wrong. Here I found warm people, persons you would like to talk to, socialize and exchange moments of culture. I am very honest both in what I am saying here and I wrote in the book. Kuwait is a crossroad of civilizations and a good place to share a new world.

Where is the book available to buy? The book was published in limited edition and was given for free to royalty, ambassadors and diplomats. Hopefully it will be published here too and will be released on the market.
What are your future plans? Right now I am writing a travelogue. Being in the Middle East gave me a huge opportunity to travel. I have been to Dubai, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Oman, Abu Dhabi. I feel that all the beautiful experiences I had

Circumscribed Criticism Ameena Abdalrazzag kneeled on the ground of a prison cell, her knees ached from the prolonged posture, her tears washed both sins and dust away, and her palms pressed on the concrete floor. She strove to think of God although her rampant thoughts clobbered her mind. When she remembered that she faced execution, a whimper escaped her throat. She ignored the women who shared her dingy confinement and recited all the Koranic verses she recollected. Ameena would have dazzled anyone who met her before her incarceration. Her large Arabian eyes, symmetrical nose, and her luscious lips served to bolster her confidence. She coupled beauty with intellect and passion with mission. She left high school with the highest grades. Even the Crown Prince was proud. After graduating from The College of Social Sciences at Kuwait University with a perfect 4.0 GPA, both the Prince and his people called her an intelligent robin. But after becoming the leading figure of The Kuwaiti Women’s Cultural and Social Society, the Prince mentioned her no more and a rift divided the people. She was called “The Female Messiah” by her fans; “The Female Anti-Christ” by her critics. Her article, “Anything He Can Do I Can Do Better,” roused a large portion of the female community to claim parliamentary positions. It catalyzed the Blue Revolution of March 08, 2005, where thousands of Kuwaiti women dressed in blue, held signs, and protested in front of the Parliament. The chorus of women echoed her phrases in unison: “Half a democracy is not a democracy,” and “Give women their rights—right now!” “I promise,” she had said to a pudgy CNN reporter, “to fight for my sisters until my last breath.” “But what if women gain complete rights in every sector and domain in the country? What will you do then?” “When equilibrium becomes the country's creed, I will focus my attention on abused women in other parts of the world.” She wrote consistently of strong female protagonists. Some critics argued that she changed nothing by writing about women characters who already occupied social and political positions already bestowed by the current system. She responded in an LBC interview, where she publicized her latest short story collection The Time of Month: “It functions as a reminder that women are not just fighting for positions they have not held, but that they are also fighting to maintain their grasp on advances they made over the long journey. You see, female principals bear immense responsibilities, but still, people tend to forget that, www.citypageskuwait.com
because the mainstream media is projecting the notion that women who enter the parliament will only talk of clothes and makeup.” Government sectors despised her. They regarded her as a Westernized elitist sent to disrupt the tranquility of tradition. But while a handful of skirmishes occurred between Ameena and the government, she still enjoyed a growing public success. This made her forget that it wasn't her power which kept harm at bay. She demonstrated her folly in “We Were All Formed Female First,” an article which detailed an extravagant revolutionary procedure that would replace all influential positions in the country with female candidates. “Aha!” said a government official with a sleazy smile. “The slip we've been awaiting! Now we can bury her once and for all!” In less than half an hour since her article had been published, a handsome Kuwaiti man in a crispy clean dishdasha, who introduced himself as Adnan Al-Dikhil from The Secret Service, handcuffed Ameena and dragged her out of her father's house. Ameena’s public scandal tipped the country into a turbulent uproar. When she stopped reciting Koranic verses Ameena begged Allah for forgiveness and total redemption. “I will never participate in politics again,” she croaked. “I will even marry and fulfill half of my religion if you forgive me!” As if by divine intervention a female officer called her name. She lifted her once beautiful, now red and swollen, face off the concrete floor. “You're free” she said coldly and unlocked the cell. Ameena scurried out of the prison gate where her cousin was waiting. Khaled Abdalrazzag avoided her gaze; he grabbed her wrist and shoved her into his car. As most Kuwaitis who complain about their government amongst family and friends, he was a patriot at heart; the kind that blamed the government, the parliament, and the people, but never the monarchy or the constitution. They drove in silence and walked in silence until they were deep within her father’s assembly hall—where twenty-nine family members had gathered. “I hope you learned to keep your mouth shut about things you didn’t understand!” he finally erupted. “Khaled, please, ease up on your cousin,” pleaded her mother. “She brought it upon herself!” “God knows that no one's more disappointed than myself, but I am still your uncle, so please, at least
restrain yourself in my presence.” All her mother’s seven sisters and two brothers as well as her father’s six brothers and five sisters were present in the large hall, in addition to some of their elder offspring. She had shamed them all. Khaled was right; she was the cause. Nobody had forced her to publish the article. In fact, everybody in the newspaper had urged her against its publication. She remembered feeling smug and invincible. It was her newspaper: Sayidat Al Mustaqbal – “Women/ Leaders of the Future.” She could publish whatever she wanted. She learned amidst random familial interjections of her costly liberation. Numerous members of the social elite, including The Kuwaiti Women's Cultural and Social Society, the government, the parliament, some sheikhs and influential citizens, who had lobbied for her freedom, did so because they neither wanted the West nor Arab leaders to interfere in their affairs. They feared that the result of any interference would lead to a generalization of Ameena’s story as “a moral” which would be used to explain the outcome of women with power. Strings were pulled, fines were paid, and an unequivocal promise made: that she will never write about politics, religion, or gender again. In spite of that, she was urged to continue writing—either in praise of current affairs or, simply, to entertain the masses and allow them a leeway from political quarrels. Because of the genuine promise she had made to God in prison, she agreed wholeheartedly. The rest of the week was devoted to planning something that would honor the generosity of the Kuwaiti people. “Poems,” she thought, “or Ramadan shows.” When she saw her favorite pen, she recoiled. “I won't use this,” she decided. “It's a rebel pen. It is the pen that ruined my life.” With a bland ballpoint she wrote a notice before her poems: “I will write to honor the country that has been charitable, and the munificent Prince who treated me as a father would a naughty child: slapped my wrists, delivered his lesson, and trusted me enough to learn from my mistake. I am embarking on a new beginning; a path direct and comfortable. A path subdued, bursting with obedience. For these reasons, I reject my favorite pen, which is now lying uselessly in my drawers. I will never discard it for its purpose is to remind me that I have made a promise—a promise I aspire to maintain no matter the consequences.” The scandal destroyed Ameena's reputation as a writer. Readers either discarded her poems or mocked them. They couldn’t understand how she had been so driven and how swiftly she compromised
{Entertainment/Book Releases} her beliefs. They never realized that fear was a powerful force whose intensity turned atheists into believers. There was only one person who not only sought her poems, but who was besotted with the idea of the female rebel. This man was a critic; the type of critic that sees pink elephants in a poem about the ocean, devil worshipping in hymns, or intercourse in nursery rhymes. They tread the world of academia like the plague, constantly growing in numbers, difficult to locate but harder to impede. This foolish critic saw deceit and disguise in Ameena's disclaimer. His opinion strengthened after reading her poems. “How clever!” he remarked with glee, “what a naughty little devil! She's got some spunk that one. To say that she hates the government even after forgiving her, hoo hoo hoo, I like her backbone!” He gathered everything she ever published and commenced to pen: “In Defense Of The Craftiest Feminist In Kuwait.” The day that his article covered the stands of stationary stores and grocery shops, everybody devoured Ameena's writings again. Her cousin, Khaled, who had married her after her liberation to keep gossipmongers at bay, stormed into his father’s house. He found her at her desk in their apartment wing. She flashed him a loving smile as a new bride would bestow her groom. Ever since the day at the police station she had viewed him as her protector. Khaled did not detest her. Her striking beauty made that difficult. The problem was that he never completely trusted her. He questioned the sincerity of her submission. Khaled crossed the room and yanked her hair then cast her onto the ground. “You lowlife!” He yelled as he kicked her thigh. “I thought you learned your lesson! Your tears deceived us all!” His heel found her jaw and she screamed. The female sound of injustice pierced concrete but not his heart. “Khaled! Praise the Prophet!” cried his mother, prying her son away from her daughter-in-law and niece. “In the name of the Almighty, my child, what is going on?” “Seen this?” he shoved the critique in his mother's face. “She's been lying!” Whilst wreathing on the floor, Ameena managed to ask her husband what frustrated him. “As if you didn’t know?” he replied mockingly. “I really don't.” His mother scanned the article and then looked at Ameena, pain coating her face. “I can't believe you wrote this after everything we did for you! I gave you my son for crying out loud! The most important thing I own!” Ameena was perplexed and she ached everywhere. She had no time to ruminate her past behavior as The Secret Service pounced upon her. Adnan Al-Dikhil cooed, “My pretty intelligent robin, we meet again, but this time, I shall clip your wings for sure.” She was definitely a traitor now. No one in the country wanted to associate themselves with her. “She's not one of us,” said a member of The Kuwaiti Women's Cultural and Social Society. “She's not a Kuwaiti!” said the choleric members of the parliament. The papers drew her genealogical tree and attributed her behavior to her Northern ancestors. “Just as we thought. No pure-bred Kuwaiti would say things like that,” they announced. Ameena’s story developed into a moral of racial defects rather than of gender inequality. Ameena had been in jail since Saturday 24th of July, 2009. She passed away when she heard the news of the first Karamat Watan march, the anti-governmental rally where a hundred thousand Kuwaitis took to the streets in protest against governmental policies and corruption. She died without knowing her crime, without knowing how she ended up on the front page of every paper as a traitor to national security, while anti-government protestors grace the pages of newspapers as upholders of the nation’s dignity. Most importantly, Ameena died without knowing that, when the anserine critic read too deeply into her disclaimer, he had set the motion for her demise. He over-thought, over-read, and-over wrote: “If the pen she used to shape her adult life,” he conjectured, “was safe inside her desk, only metaphorically and not literally broken, then it must mean that her rebellious streak is hidden inside the walls of her heart only to be reborn again! She also mentioned a promise that she would honor no matter the consequences. What was the promise? It was the one she promised the CNN reporter. How else could she speak of consequences if she was opting to abide by the status quo? Her life after the amnesty was dull and obedient. Surely there are no consequences in such a life. With that in mind, when one rereads the poems about the generosity of the monarchy, one comprehends their satirical value. She was merely abiding her time until she exposed the folly of false kings and idols. Ameena Abdalrazzag is truly the craftiest feminist that Kuwait has ever known!” May she rest in peace.

The CityPages Team goes to The Meat Co. The Meat Co. Kuwait was opened in January 2010 and it was their 15th trendsetting Store . This month CityPages Team decided to choose The Meat Co. as their destination for their monthly food tasting venture. Located within “The Gardens” zone at the new 360 Mall, its design and décor takes inspiration from its surroundings. Dressed in a smouldering yet bold colour palette of copper, chocolate, magenta and red, the new Meat Co. Kuwait immerses diners in the rich vivacity of its African heritage. At The Meat Co. Kuwait, form is juxtaposed with function. Walls that resemble rustic wooden blocks subliminally reference chopping blocks and the restaurants main attraction for which it is world renowned: Steaks, so good, “you’ll leave home for them”. The energetic open plan kitchen dominates the red and chocolate brown-accented space and creates a sense of theatre, drawing diners in as active participants from the comfort of their sleek bench seating. The custom designed furnishings with audacious amber lighting create the perfect excuse for gathering together and participating in a collective culinary event. Dezmond the floor manager was a great help. He took the time off and actually helped us make the best choices for the evening. Dezmond helped us select a variety of starters. We ordered Borewors which is a grilled traditional African sausage served with their pap and chakalala sauce. We also had the Salt and Pepper Calamari which is served with their special home-made tartar sauce. We also had Red Chilli Prawns. For the salad, we ordered the Rocket, Apple & Wallnut Salad which had fresh rocket leaves drizzled with balsamic dressing. We also tried the Smoked Salmon Salad which had avocado, mixed lettuce, Spanish onions and capers tossed with caramelized lemon and dill oil. www.citypageskuwait.com

For our main course, our team selected the Marinated Chicken Skewer a Prawn Skewer and a beef skewer. Aisha was fond of ribs and ordered Barbeque Beef Ribs which were braised a special BBQ marinade and flame grilled. The food was delicious beyond our imagination and it was evident from the empty plates. We were all dessert lover, so we again ordered a couple of them. We ordered the Traditional South African Malva Pudding on the suggestion of Desmond. It is a home-made apricot pudding smothered with caramel sauce served with crème anglaise and garnished with an apricot coulis. January 2013

{Food/Review} We ordered the Apple Crumble which is made by slowly cooking apples with cinnamon and raisins and served with vanilla ice-cream. And we also tried the Chocolate & Nut Pudding which is a chocolate steamed pudding with crushed pistachios and cashews, served with strawberry coulis, vanilla ice-cream and chocolate sauce. At the end the team at The Meat Co. gave quite an amazing performance by singing a Zulu song and beating on the African drums with full energy. The whole place seemed to be in a celebration and we felt special and joined them by standing along with them and singing to their tunes.

What’s the Origin and Point Of Neckties? The neckties appear to be a useless piece of clothing, a simple piece of fabric that hang from your neck and sometimes can be really annoying, but as many articles of clothing, neckties have a historic origin. The earliest mention of neckties was with the Chinese, it was discovered that in the grave of China’s first emperor Shih Huang Ti, the emperor and his army wore neckties. Neckties also appeared in the Roman times. After his victory the Roman Empire he ordered to erect a marble column to feature all the soldiers that fought with him, some of them appear to be wearing neckties, actually for an unusual purpose that it to absorb sweat. The use of neckties as we know it today started in the Croatian marines that used to wear these ties as a statement of fashion, but it didn’t become famous until the French Revolution in 1789 where the word “cravat” appeared, this word actually meant Croatian. As time passed, after King Charles returned from exile and regained the throne with the English Revolution, he brought what was considered as a French fashion statement back with him to England and from there as England became more and more powerful that neckties spread all over the world. In conclusion, although it is considered a very annoying piece of clothing by many people we gain more respect to the necktie when we know it’s very interesting history.

Through the ten installations, Hermès objects such as a pair of Driver gloves, a Double sens bag or the Silkydaily diaries come alive with wit and humour revealing their surprising uses. Through French artist Nicolas Tourte’s reinterpretation, photography, sculpture and drawing are given a new twist thanks to information technology and video. With a touch of mischief, he invites us to take a step back and look at humanity in motion, as in his Silkydaily vehicles or the bathers in the “Piscine de Robinson”. Then we surprise a man struggling with a thread on an Etrivière bracelet and a woman who looks tiny next to a giant bracelet, creating a miseen-abyme of the visitor in relation to the exhibits that mark out the space. The artist literally gives life to the objects placing them inside old furniture, in unexpected places or in a whirl of precious leathers and recycled materials: a river escapes from compact Copernic wallets, a tropical breeze makes Kelly wallets perspire and Sésame key rings constitute little islands among pebbles.
