Despite the emotional turbulence of recent weeks, I hope you will enjoy this July edition of CityPages. One of the many things I love about Kuwait is its acceptance of other cultures. The huge number of ex-pats who have chosen to make Kuwait their home is evidence of the welcome this proud but humble country extends. So when something as devastating as the bomb attack on 26th June brings terror to these shores, my heart breaks for Kuwait and its people. But despite the tragic loss of life, the country came together to send a message of solidarity to those wishing to divide it, proving that regardless of race or religion, Kuwait will remain united. I am very proud of my adoptive country and feel privileged to be able to call it home. Being able to give something back is as important to me as it is satisfying, and my position at CityPages allows me to do just that. The warm welcome extended by the team when I first arrived was typical of the welcome I’ve come to expect in Kuwait and I soon felt at home amongst this group of dedicated, hard working professionals. “FATHER FIGURE?”
What does it mean to be a father? Dads approach fatherhood in a variety of ways, from overbearing to ‘wrapped around your little finger’ and everything in between. There’s no formula for the perfect father, but there are some commonalities among father figures in literature that make the concept of fatherhood a powerful one. In honor of Father’s Day last month, here are six father figures in literature. Which reminds you of your own father? King Lear, The “Prideful” Father The life of the title character in Shakespeare’s King Lear is shaped by his three daughters. When it comes time for him to step down from the throne in his old age, King Lear makes a drastic mistake. Instead of dividing his empire evenly among his three daughters, a final deceit causes him to disown Cordelia. Unfortunately, King Lear doesn’t realize that Cordelia loved him most until it’s too late. Despite this tragic choice, King Lear’s powerful love for his daughters defines his life.

Mr. Bennet, The “Protective” Father Mr. Bennet may not be the richest character in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, but what makes him a memorable father is the constant care and empathy that he shows for his daughters. Given the Bennet family’s financial situation, he feels pressure to marry his daughters off, but instead of focusing on money he keeps his children’s best interests in mind. Throughout the novel, it’s clear how much Mr. Bennet admires his daughter Lizzy; in particular, in the way he uses both his wisdom and humor to guide her through difficult life decisions. citypageskuwait.com
Bob Cratchit, The “Optimistic” Father The majority of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol focuses on the eternally grumpy Ebeneezer Scrooge and the unfortunate Tiny Tim. The unsung hero here, however, is Tiny Tim’s father, Bob Cratchit. As Scrooge’s employee, Cratchit can’t see much light at the end of the tunnel, and he is perpetually kept cold and underpaid. Instead of giving up, Cratchit makes the best of the situation and dutifully reports to work in order to take care of his beloved son. After a spiritual intervention, Scrooge makes a turn for the better and Cratchit’s persistence and steadfastness pays off.
Atticus Finch, The “Role Model” Father Despite tough times, Atticus Finch serves as a father figure to admire in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. A widower and lawyer in the Jim Crow South, Finch does his best to be his children’s moral compass. Perhaps the best example of this is the way Finch encourages his children to be who they want to be instead of what their troubled society says is right. Instead of forcing his daughter to be a girly girl, Finch encourages Jem to develop her tomboy personality. He has a challenging road in front of him, but he remains a pillar of strength throughout the novel.
Calvin’s Dad, The “Patient” Father For years, fans enjoyed Bill Watterson’s funny and sweet comic strip, Calvin and Hobbes. A calm and collected counterpoint to the mischievous Calvin, his dad proves time and time again that patience is a virtue. Throughout many story lines, Calvin’s dad answers his son’s often-obnoxious questions and deals with his many well-intentioned mishaps. Best of all, he loves Calvin through all of his trying moments and troublesome times.
The Man, The “Sacrificing” Father The Road by Cormac McCarthy is a post-apocalyptic novel that remains grim from cover to cover, but one of the shining lights throughout is The Man. This father figure doesn’t have a lot to offer his son, due to their extraordinary circumstances. Instead, he does everything he can to keep his son alive and motivated along their incredibly difficult journey through what seems like the end of the world. These father figures demonstrate a full range of parenting styles throughout centuries of literature. What unifies them is their dedication to their children and their insistence on placing their kids and their families first and foremost. Which father figure do you find most inspiring? July, 2015

GOOD LIFE When I was enjoying my teen years back in England, there was an innovative sitcom (situation comedy) produced by BBC television. Called “The Good Life”, it related the joys and miseries experienced by fictional character Tom Good and his wife Barbara when they attempted to escape modern commercial living by "becoming totally selfsufficient" in their home in Surbiton, part of London’s “stockbroker belt”.
Paul Tunbridge A professional Facilities Manager from England, and with work experience across mainland Europe before arriving in Kuwait in 2007 Paul's interests include architecture and gardening as well as creative writing and the arts in general.
No longer able to take his job seriously, Tom gave up work as a draughtsman for a company that makes plastic toys for breakfast cereal packets. Their house was paid for, so he and his wife Barbara adopted a sustainable, simple and self-sufficient lifestyle while staying in their home in The Avenue, Surbiton. They turned their front and back gardens into allotments, growing soft fruit and vegetables. They introduced a variety of livestock including chickens, a goat (Geraldine) and a cockerel (Lenin). They generated their own electricity, using methane from animal waste and attempted to make their own clothes. They sold or bartered surplus crops for essentials they could not make themselves. They cut their monetary requirements to the minimum with varying success. I recall so well their sense of achievement when their hens layed the first eggs and when they harvested their first crops of vegetables. And although the situation was extreme (and therein was the foundation of the comedy) it is nevertheless reflective of what is available to each of us. In a world in which we eat increasing amounts of fast-food and processed food products, we perhaps forget how good are the flavours and benefits of freshly grown or freshly-prepared products. And there is a great sense of pride and achievement when we grow or make something for ourselves. I used to grow my own crops of runner beans and courgettes, raspberries and strawberries, and a whole variety of culinary herbs, and everything always tasted so much better than if I had bought them from a shop! I dare say that many of you reading this have shared a similar experience and will be drooling at the memory of such fantastic home-grown flavours! So, what has encouraged me to write about this? Quite simply, I sat down in front of my laptop after breakfast and realised I had a big grin on my face because I was feeling very pleased with myself. And I was feeling pleased with myself because I had just enjoyed a really nice breakfast. And the breakfast was really nice because the bread was freshly produced from my bread-maker, after it had been exiled in the UK for almost 8 years! I had forgotten the pleasure of waking in the morning to the aroma of freshlybaked bread. My machine has a timer and a feature that keeps the bread warm after baking, so I am able to set it to be ready for when I wake. I had last used it

back in England almost 8 years ago, so it was nice to discover that it had forgiven me for leaving it behind in storage when I moved to Kuwait. Nor was it jealous that I had abandoned it in favour of bringing with me my beloved Nespresso machine (my baby that, even 8 years ago, I could not live without). And so I brought it back with me just a few weeks ago, gave it a clean and plugged it in …. and this morning was rewarded with the nicest Cinnamon & Sultana Loaf that I have tasted for such a long time. Thus, my breakfast was truly an indulgence that has given me a wonderful start to the day and inspired me to write about the pleasures of home produce, baking and cooking. Freshly brewed coffee accompanied by freshly baked bread smothered in butter and strawberry jam … my idea of paradise on a weekend morning. Would I like another? Don’t mind if I do!

هناك الكثير من األشخاص الذين يملكون رؤوس أموال ولكنهم ال يملكون المشروع المناسب للبدء فيه ، فتبدأ مرحلة البحث عن أفكار تجارية لتكوين دخ ً ال آخر ولكن العملية ليست بهذه السهولة كما تعلمون ، ويجد األغلبية أنفسهم في حيرة من أمرهم بعملية اختيار المشروع المناسب لهم ،وفي هذه المقالة سأذكر بعض الخطوات التي تساعد في توليد وبلورة األفكار التجارية: أوالً :إعمل ما تحب ،فكل مشروع محاط بالمخاطر سواء مادية أو إدارية أو قانونية ،لذلك البد عليك العمل بمجال تحبه لتتحمل ضغط العمل ولتكون قادرًا على التغلب على العقبات التي ستواجهك .إذًا الخطوة األولى هي البحث عن فكرة في مجال تحبه. ثانيًا :االسترخاء ،هل تساءلت لماذا تأتينا األفكار عند السفر أو عند قضاء إجازة بسيطة خصوصا عندما تكون لوحدك ؟ إن ذلك بسبب التحرر من الضغوط اليومية .تتطلب حياتنا اليومية الكثير من اإللتزامات والمسئوليات والتي تشغل بالك وتفكيرك طوال اليوم فيصعب التفكير بأفكار جديدة والتخطيط لها ،لذلك عند االسترخاء تتحرر من االرتباطات وتصفي ذهنك وعقلك للتفكير واإلبداع .أنا ال أقصد االسترخاء بقضاء ساعة في معهد للمساج بل تحتاج لفترة كافية للتعمق في التفكير ،وهذه أمثله على طرق االسترخاء: السفر لوحدك لفترة قصيرة ،أو العزلة لمدة يوم على July, 2015
األقل تمارس فيه الرياضة لوحدك في نادي صحي أو زيارة منتجع سياحي قد تكون مفيدة أيضًا. ثالثًا :فكر بالتكنولوجيا ،حاول إيجاد عملية روتينية في المجال الذي تختاره بحيث يمكنك صنع نظام معين (مثل برنامج على الموبايل) يمكنه أن يوفر وقت الشريحة المستهدفة ويسهل عليهم إنجاز أعمالهم. رابعًا :تقييم الفكرة ،عليك تقييم الفكرة من الناحية المادية ،هل هي مجدية ؟ هل الشريحة المستهدفة متواجدة بالشكل المطلوب ؟ فأحيان ُا يختار أحدهم فكرة بمجال يحبه ولنفرض بأن مجاله هو لعبة رياضية معينة ولكنها قليلة اإلنتشار بدولة الكويت فلو جمعنا ممارسين ومتابعين هذه اللعبة في الكويت لوجدنا بأن عددهم قليل وال يحقق الهدف المطلوب! لذلك كن حريص بأن الشريحة المستهدفة كافية لتحقيق أهدافك. خامسًا :االستشارة ،بإمكانك استشارة المختصين وأصحاب التجربة والخبرة بالمجال الذي تختاره ،وكذلك النقاش مع العمالء المحتملين سيكون مفيدًا جدًا لتحسين وتطوير الفكرة .قد يقلق البعض من مناقشة أفكارهم مع الغير خوفًا من سرقة الفكرة وتطبيقها ،لذلك ناقش الفكرة األساسية وال تناقش التفاصيل الدقيقة التي تميزك عن غيرك بحيث أنه حتى لو تم سرقة الفكرة فال يمكن تطبيقها بنفس الشكل الذي تراه في مخيلتك.

John McArthur John MacArthur was born in England, but has Celtic ancestry, so loves to sing. Abandoning his choral training, he sings songs of love and loss, owning several antique acoustic guitars. He has degrees in physics, chemistry and mathematics, has studied theology and business management, so, in fine nomadic tradition, he can call several universities home. After seven years in Kuwait, he 'retired' and laughs at himself every morning, commuting between his Paris island home and country house in rural France where he lives with his wife, a food writer and stylist, and, perhaps soon, a dog, should he be allowed one. Much to her dismay, he is thinking of taking up the mandolin. He has written for various publications worldwide on whatever happens to catch his imagination.

In a voyage of the imagination, anything is possible. Suspending disbelief, let’s just suppose that in the blink of an eye, every human being on planet Earth just vanished. In every city, on every continent, every island, beach resort, town, village, hamlet and farm all that human activity just…stopped. “How?” seems the obvious question. It doesn’t matter how, but if it helps, we might imagine a massive, instantaneous worldwide epidemic, a nanovirus of staggering perfection whose only target is us, or a thorough and complete harvesting by alien abduction. Of course this applies to you and I as well, so all there is left for us is Thought, because we don’t really exist either any more, except in our own minds. We can travel back and forth through space and time, pausing to track the seconds as if they were years, or the millennia as if they were heartbeats. We can imagine ourselves on London Bridge, or on a grassy Serengeti plain and we are there. Genes are aggressive and selfish, seeking any and every way to maintain themselves, evolving as necessary into new niches and refuges to allow them to become established. I was recently stung by a particularly aggressive wasp, which seemed unusual until I realised that it was in the process of building a nest under a chair upon which I happened to be sitting. The nest was already a few centimetres long, neatly subdivided into hexagonal but as yet vacant living spaces. We share this fragile blue-green space with perhaps just under nine million different life-forms, according to an exhaustive study undertaken four years ago; apparently
the most accurate estimate yet of life on Earth. Threequarters of them, mostly insects, inhabit the 30%, which is dry land. Species have become extinct before we’ve even heard of them. Over nine-tenths of marine species have yet to be classified. Most things stay out of our way and the ones that either can’t or don’t are confronted with speciocide, butchery or enslavement. If we leave, what will happen to them? When we’re gone, will Nature heave a sigh of relief and set about creating a new republic of insects and grass? And, how long will it take for every trace of our existence to be obliterated from the Earth, to go back to Eden when the sun was high in the heavens of the fifth day? Let us take our first voyage together, transporting ourselves to Manhattan Island as first seen by Henry Hudson’s crew on the afternoon of September 12th 1609, the virgin territory upon which, four hundred years later stands one of the most famous cities in the world. In front of us as we sail into New York harbor is a green wilderness. Its landscape is extraordinarily rich, with towering trees, salt marshes and grasslands teeming with wildlife and game - "as pleasant a land as one can tread upon" Hudson remarked. The Lenape Indians dig for clams and oysters on sandy beaches along stretches of both coasts on the narrow little island, only a little over twenty kilometres in length. More than forty brooks, streams and tributaries, over a hundred kilometres of them, criss-cross the landscape. A long, shallow lake sits underneath what is now 59th Street, north of the Plaza Hotel; it later narrows then meanders its way towards the East River. A mountain lion and deer trail runs north-east, later becoming
known as Broadway. From the air, Manhattan Island is one of the finest sights in the world, a tightly packed fortress of steel reinforced concrete and glass, seemingly impervious to the relentless march of Nature. But, the earth has a secret weapon. Once, the island’s ninety square kilometres of living roots siphoned off over a metre of annual rainfall. It won’t stop raining when we’re gone and it takes a great deal of man-hours and machinery to remove all that water which, corralled by concrete, has absolutely nowhere to go. After heavy storms, the rising underground river partially corrodes and almost fills the gridiron of subway stations, the city’s flood services sometimes only just managing to cope. If we barely stem the tide when we’re here, what will happen when we’re not? No people means no power, no power, no pumps. The first heavy rainfall after we’ve left, the subways would fill with water. Then, later, as the water sluices away the topsoil, the iron construction has no foundation and Lexington Avenue simply collapses into the ground. But, the water has barely started. Concrete is brittle and a single freeze/ thaw cycle would be enough to create huge fissures in the streets. Left unrepaired, they provide shelter for implacably pitiless invaders such as the ailanthus tree, capable of rooting in the tiniest crevices of the sidewalk. Other flora follows, quickly. The same cycles of heat and cold bring a different destruction, as expansion and contraction cause buildings to creak and groan. Rain seeps into walls and rooflines, rusting bolts. Inevitably, one hot summer, a single bolt of lightning ignites the exposed, tinder-dry material, plus decades or centuries of dead branches and long-abandoned office buildings, filled with paper fuel and chipboard. Any remaining gas still stored in unrusted canisters adds to the blaze, windows blow out, rain gets in and the relentless cycles continue until the city eventually burns to the ground or simply collapses under its own unsupported weight. The soil cap grows, air pollution is non-existent and after only a couple of hundred years the beginnings of tree colonization can be seen amidst the ruins. Animals return, their re-wilding not taking as long as we might imagine - a few years ago, a coyote was spotted in the East Village, and improbably, a wild turkey, both of whom clearly didn’t wait until we’d left. But, we can move on. With an abundance of slave labour, our ancestors created for themselves enduring landmarks, testaments to ingenuity and skill, as burial chambers for kings and places of worship to gods. They envisaged them lasting for ever, as permanent a fingerprint on the surface of the
earth as the relentless scouring of the desert winds allows. Far into the future, if ever there did arrive visitors from a distant star, they would see and try to understand what minds and ingenuities constructed their perfect shapes and speculate as to their purpose. The pyramids of Egypt are constructed from dense limestone in solid, regular blocks, each one the same size as the other. Limestone weathers slowly in dry, waterless conditions and the structures' perfection of shape, built as they are on stone foundations, will not move or shift except under extreme seismic upheaval. Their angle of repose is perfect. Imagine a huge heap of Lego, or even, a barrow of soil, upended carelessly on the ground. It forms a pyramid by default, as tall as it is wide. Yet man, in his perversity, often tears down that which he has so painstakingly built. Over a thousand years ago, the development of the two centres of Fustat and Al Quahiraby the Fatimids into the city of Cairo was supposed to herald the start of the demise of the Giza pyramids' former glory. Some of the polished limestone and granite, a magnificent sight in the Pharaonic eras, was removed and recycled, used to build a great new city. Later, attempts were made to remove the limestone blocks of the pyramid of Menkhare but it became clear that it was simply not a viable undertaking. The workmen found that removing the vast limestone blocks was a hugely difficult process, also quite a costly endeavour for the amount of reusable masonry recovered. Their attempts to tear down the smallest of the three pyramids of Giza can be seen today, almost exactly as the workmen left it. Time and man have had very little effect on their absolute, changeless grandeur. Today, the pyramids are at greatest risk due to the erosion of the rock from air pollution. It is a weary testament to our own rapacious greed and fossil fuel use that they have suffered more in the past fifty years, as Cairo edges closer and the pollution gets worse, than they have in the past thousand years when the attempted dismantling took place. What then, will happen when we, their architects, builders and despoilers, are no longer here? Over the centuries, the effects of enhanced greenhouse gases, trapping heat as they do, will diminish and finally cease, returning the earth to balance and ecological harmony. Eons into the future, relieved of the evolutionary pressure of homo sapiens, as the relentless twin spirals of DNA reconfigure themselves to their own advantage and strange new species find homes where reproductive comfort is assured, the probability is high that when all else has crumbled into dust, these final monuments, a scrawl on the monolithic landscape of time, will still proclaim that we were once here.

Terrorism is the ugly face of racism. After what happened on that horrific day, I believe it is the responsibility of each and every one of us to ensure that the same does not happen again. Fighting terrorism doesn’t start with our police; fighting terrorism starts at home by teaching our kids the art of embracing one another. Fighting terrorism starts when we teach our kids that life is truly beautiful and that the beauty of life shines in its diversity. Diversity allows us to share our different experiences, views and also see things from a different angle. Imagine if life was a banquet filled with all kinds of delicious foods, colourful salads and scrumptious desserts but you were only allowed to eat bland rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner, day in and day out. That’s exactly what we do when we are prejudiced against a certain religion, race, ethnicity or sex. Today, more than any other day, we are obliged to teach our kids acceptance and tolerance. If we want our children’s future to be peaceful and if we wish for them to live in a world not marred by wars, then we need to start from our own homes. Children are very observant and many times will ask, very publicly, about someone who looks different or acts differently in a public space. Use these opportunities to open a dialogue with your child instead of shushing them and moving on. Still not sure how to proceed? Here are a few tips to help out: 1. Teach them love. You need to start with yourself and teach your kids by example. Make sure your children see that you have friends who you love who differ from you. Our children always mirror our own actions. 2. Know your values and biases. We all have our own biases; it is natural. The important part is evaluating our own beliefs, values and differences. You yourself will need to understand these things more completely.
3. Expose your children to differences. Like everything in life, we constantly have to push ourselves to get out of our comfort zone and the same is true of our children too. Start with choosing books that explore the world in all its varieties, cultures and views. Open a dialogue with children on their own opinion. This allows your child to not only see that the world is made up of different cultures but also learn to respect these differences. It is important to stress to your child that it is not necessary to agree with all these differences but we have to respect these other cultural views just like we expect other people to respect our own values. 4. Challenge stereotypes. Our world is by no means perfect or tolerant. There are many prejudices voiced every day either through the media or jokes people share with each other or blatantly from others around us. When your child encounters such intolerance your job as a parent is to assertively tell your child that the stereotype is simply not true and invite your child to learn a little more about the targeted culture (or religion, race, etc.) to understand what is true. 5. Challenge yourself. It is easy to always view the world through our own personal lens. It is when others challenge our views that we become defensive and we shut off our learning experience. Next time you are put in that situation, try to respond instead of react; keep an open mind and see things from the other person’s point of view. When your children see this, they adopt the same quality themselves. 6. Nurture your child’s self esteem. When children feel good about themselves, they do not feel threatened by the differences of others. Children who are secure and comfortable in their own skin tend to be more comfortable exploring and debating other views. A peaceful world starts from our homes; a tolerant society starts from our dining tables; an accepting society starts from the books we read to our kids at bedtime. Be aware of what you are telling your children, what you are teaching them and what you are mirroring to them. Our fate, and that of our kids, is in our hands.

Bruha Eve encountered many hurdles before finding her true vocation as an artist. The rebellious Filipino has shocked many with her controversial art and bald statements but she insists she’s just misunderstood. Here, she talks about her art, her ambitions and her weakness for stray cats.

Please introduce yourself to our readers. Hello. I’m Bruha Eve and I’m a Filipino artist/designer based in Kuwait. I consider myself an entrepreneur by day and painter by night. I multi-task and I often consider myself a chameleon.
Tell us about your education. People NEVER believe me when I say I don’t have a college degree. I finished high school and became a mother at 17. I had to work doubletime, juggling college in between part-time jobs when I was in the Philippines. After a year or so, I took a detour and tried enlisting in the US army. Instead, I landed a job contracting for them here in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. By that time, I tried to educate and push myself harder, so I took a few online courses on BS Psychology at the University of Florida. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to complete my education because of unforeseen circumstances. I felt trapped and was very unhappy. So, I decided to quit my job and pursue my passion because I’ve always been interested in Art. I’m also Six Sigma Greenbelt certified if that counts!
What originally made you want to become an artist? Freedom. I always felt isolated and different. It’s my way of expressing myself and communicating with society. It’s quite a challenging privilege to be able to tap someone’s mind without engaging socially. I am a rebel and often misunderstood. People think I’m too eccentric and a bit weird at times. Bruha Eve Artworld is my life. It’s my ultimate platform of emotions, thoughts and beliefs.
How would you describe your artistic approach? My art is a mixture of expressionism-surrealism in mix-media. I like to use women as my subject because it’s very intimate and empowering. I don’t mean to scare, but I always incorporate images of eyes in my canvas. That way, I feel like my paintings are watching and alive. I like to stimulate the viewers mind. My art depicts weird subjects and tells stories in the most uncanny and provocative way. It’s always an experimental ride with me. It really depends on my mood. I love it when people start asking “WHY?” Then, my job is done.
Tell us about some of the collaborations that you had done. It was in 2011 when the artist in me was discovered. I launched my first solo show “BURSTS AND KALEIDESCOPES” at the Marina hotel and later that year I met Timothy Carr of TJC Films who made my first art documentary “Portrait of An Artist”. In 2012, I collaborated with Yousef Al-Taher, co-founder of Athnain magazine, to produce “VIVID” collection. I painted 10 limited and exclusive sweater designs for Goji Boutique and was featured in Bazaar magazine and Harper’s Bazaar Arabia. In 2013, I did “FACETS OF LOVE” another solo exhibition in collaboration with West Elm, The Avenues Mall. It was that same year I shaved my head bald and dyed it pink for the Breast Cancer campaign in Rola’s Beauty Lounge. Later that year, my paintings were displayed at Milly boutique in Arraya mall as part of the Art x Fashion event. After this simultaneous exposure, I was featured and interviewed for different magazines and newspapers. I was also hired to do some private interior designing projects where I was interviewed for a local TV show. My latest collaboration was with Bayt Lothan last year for Kreate 4.0 where I created pieces using florescent paintings and displayed them under black lights. citypageskuwait.com

What are you passionate about besides art? I love diamonds and gold jewellery. I’m enjoying the art behind the craftsmanship. I enjoy selling stuff and singing karaoke. I can be a good saleswoman too, haha! I currently run @Vagabondluxury with my husband, an online store on Instagram selling designer goods. I also like feeding stray cats along the beach four times a month.
"What is Art?" is certainly too big of a question to ask here, but what do you hope your audience takes away from your art? What statement do you hope to make? I paint what’s in my heart. I like to tell stories even in the most compelling way. What you see on the canvas is a portion of my mind, a part of my heart and a chunk of my soul. It is my life and everything I strongly feel and believe in. I just want to share it with the world. Now it’s up to you to hate or appreciate it.
What was the best advice given to you as an artist? Don’t let it go to waste. God handpicked you personally. Your soul has rainbow streaks. Shine brightly.
Many artists struggle to find ways to sell their art. How do you sell your work? How do you market yourself? Haha! I have my fair share of struggles alright. Being a Filipino artist is already hard enough since Kuwait has developed a sort of monopoly and discrimination towards non-Arab artists. I just carry on and treat myself as a walking piece of art too. That means I keep my life interesting for people who want to know what I’m up to. Developing a strong portfolio/social media platform is a MUST. Trust me, people talk.
Who or what has been the biggest single influence on your way of thinking? My mom. She taught me the value of time and making the most out of any situation. I learned the value of giving and living. She told me that happiness is a personal choice and not to expect much from people.
What would you say is your strongest skill? My PR, haha! People say that I have a very strong and intimidating personality. I am convinced that I have a gift of persuasion and people can’t say “NO” to me. Some people think I’m catty and a snob but the opposite is true. I like to have fun and clown around. I’m carefree but also a bit stubborn and do as I like.
What materials do you enjoy working with the most? Acrylics! I love its versatility when you’re adventurous with it. It’s water-based as well and fast drying. I love working mostly with my hands so it works perfect; and it doesn't make me itch like oils.
Any materials you would like to explore in the future? I want to play with Resin. I love its almost perfect texture.
How do you think online design resources have influenced the art being produced today? There are pros and cons to it. It’s easier for artists to search for references and be educated. But it can also kill the creativity of the artist since they would rather rely on technology than their own imagination. citypageskuwait.com

What is your dream project? Art installation solo shows across Europe.
What memorable responses have you had to your work? Some people are still in disbelief to this day because I shaved my head bald for my Breast Cancer show. People have mixed opinions about it. That move conveyed a very strong social response, which reveals the true nature of human. I’m very proud I did that.
Do you have any exhibits to promote in the near future? I stopped painting for a while and am currently planning to learn how to make jewellery and sculpting. I’m very ambitious and always hungry for more which plays a big part of my creative process. I want to expand my knowledge and will try new things that will challenge my skills. Hopefully, I’ll come up with something wonderful soon!

How and when did the idea of owning a pizza restaurant start? I have always known that I have passion for travel and food. It all started in the year 2000 when I visited Rome, Italy for the first time and had my first bite of the real Neapolitan style pizza at ‘Pizza Ciro’. It was after this meal the idea was born to bring to Kuwait the taste and experience of real Neapolitan pizza in a simple, casual atmosphere. I was hooked and in 2004 built my first wood-fired oven in my backyard, experimenting and attempting pizza making for my family and friends. Once my oven finally arrived to Kuwait in 2008, I spent another three years perfecting the dough and my pizzailo skills, along with my recipes. In 2011, I opened ‘Solo Pizza Napulitana’, the first genuine Neapolitan Pizzeria in Kuwait, and the first to be awarded the Seal of Authenticity by the Association of True Neapolitan Pizza, “Vera Pizza Napoletana (VPN)”. The VPN Association certified me as a professional Pizzaiolo in 2012, after 12 hard years of perfecting my pizza making skills. However long it took me to bring the real Neapolitan pizza experience here to Kuwait it was well worth the wait, God Bless. Where did the name of your restaurant “Solo Pizza Napulitana” come from? ‘SOLO’ means single or only. We are the only pizzeria in Kuwait that serves the real Neapolitan pizza. Tell us about your experience in Napoli? I tasted the real Pizza in Napoli and I learned how to make pizza in Napoli. I also worked there to understand their culture and learn how to make the real Neapolitan pizza. That’s how I brought a small piece of Napoli here to Kuwait; through the taste of pizza! What makes “Solo Pizza Napulitana” a unique pizza? At Solo we only use the freshest and finest ingredients, creating a simple and all natural pizza Napoletana. Our dough is made by hand daily using the purest quality flour. The soft and elastic dough is naturally proofed for about 24 hours creating the light and airy “cornicione” (pizza crust) we crave. Our tomato sauce is made using rare San Marzano tomatoes, which pack a sweet and distinct tomato taste. They are grown only in the rich volcanic soil under the shadow of Mt. Vesuvio around Napoli. We wanted people to come back to SOLO because of the unique experience, not anything else. When we opened SOLO, it was a few of us running the whole restaurant; me, my brothers and friends. We have dedicated our time and energy to our Pizzeria and we proudly made it. Now we have our own amazing staff who are a big part of our success. Amr, you are the only Kuwaiti ‘Pizzaiolo’, does that make your pizza any more special? Yes it does! I went to the birthplace of pizza, Napoli, and visited over thirty pizzerias, documenting with videos and pictures how this work of art was created. I then trained and worked in Napoli in a few of the top pizzerias there and learned how to make the real Neapolitan pizza. In 2007 I worked in a well-known Pizzeria for a month. In February 2008, I met with maestro pizzaiolo, Giulio Adriani, in front of the most famous pizzeria in Napoli, ‘L'Antica Pizzeria Da Michele dal 1870’. I worked at his restaurant ‘Alla Corte dei Borboni’, in Ostia Lido, for two weeks. I again returned to Italy in the summer and was invited to participate with Giulio Adriani in the 2008 ‘Ostia Lido Pizza Fest’ for a month. I also ordered the traditional wood-fired oven built by fourth generation Neapolitans and shipped it all the way from Napoli. What are your three most important values as an entrepreneur? Simplicity, honesty and respect. Out of curiosity, what is ‘Solo Mobo’? It’s a mobile wood fired oven designed for private parties and public events to “bring SOLO to you”. From your menu, what are your favorite pizzas? ‘Classic Margherita’ and ‘Ring of Fayaaa’ – a new pizza made from our homemade chili infused honey. Solo Pizza Napulitana is one of the best pizzerias in Kuwait. To what do you attribute that success? God Bless! The support of my parents, family and friends from when SOLO was just an idea. What is your one important piece of advice for those who are just starting out their business? Have passion, patience, dedication and never give up. Tell us more about your work environment? SHERLOCK AND ME

Dentally challenged. Still single.
I can't really claim to be much of a screenwriter, or any kind of writer for that matter, but I’ll have a bash and hope you get the idea. So, possibly some scene setting, subdued yellow lighting, dark, vibrant ‘cello music, that sort of thing. Cue to dreary fogbound street, lit by a single, weak gas lamp. Nobody about. A hansom cab, its horse weary from a long day, clops forlornly in and out of scene, hooves gently clacking on cobbled stone. A shiftylooking man with a cap pulled down over his forehead scuttles, almost runs, head down, glancing left, right and occasionally behind as if pursued by some foul fiend that ‘doth close citypageskuwait.com
behind him tread’. Cut to first floor window. A tall, languidly elegant man in a beautifully tailored black frock coat parts the curtain with a violin bow, and takes in the entire scene, his eyes unblinking and heavy-lidded. He misses nothing, sees absolutely everything, cocks his head, listens for a moment, one eyebrow raised until the inevitable single pistol shot rings out from unseen assailant and the man in the street falls. And then, an opening line: “You see, Watson, but you do not observe”, the great detective’s famous maxim. Sherlock Holmes, the fictional character created by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887, still enthralls, fascinates and inspires. Got that last bit from one of the books, in fact, so have to admit that I didn’t actually write it. But look, old Perry
isn’t just a pretty face, if I'm allowed a little laughingly hysterical untruth. I used to quite often imagine myself as the Man himself – how easy it is to baffle those of weaker intellect – my own little Walter Mitty moment. No tricks, sleight of hand or miracles here, just cold, lightning fast logic and a dazzlingly rapid display of neural connectivity and systematic common sense. You see, even I am capable of the odd fifty-dollar sentence. It comes from having been quite a lonely and, let’s be honest, quite friendless child who read a lot. Holmes became my joiner of dots par excellence, my personal Alan Turing of detection. I used to slip easily between being either Holmes or Watson, depending on mood.
Everybody knows this and, since I read it somewhere, I’ll copy it down so you can read it too. “It was really elementary, gentlemen” was the phrase ascribed to Conan Doyle’s mentor and inspiration, the Edinburgh doctor Joseph Bell with diagnostic powers verging on the magical and under whom Conan Doyle had studied. He is described as remarking “I always impressed upon my students the vast importance of little distinctions, the endless significance of trifles”. When I first came across this, I thought it had something to do with those rather jolly things with spongecake, jelly and cream that Grandmother used to make on Sunday afternoons… Oh, never mind. When at that spotty, unpleasant age of perhaps about eleven, when the nastiness of one’s classmates is most keenly felt, I had a maths master at school who loved his trifles and little distinctions. I suppose he was utterly fed up with having to deal with dimwits who didn’t quite get the notion of a quadratic equation. “… the endless significance of trifles” was his way of saying “you’re a bunch of useless halfwits who can’t count your change for the bus”. Whether it’s solving a crime or a maths problem, the process of deduction, according to Sherlock, remains the same – “you take all of your observations … you put them in order, starting from the beginning and leaving nothing out - the chain of reasoning and the test of possibilities - and you determine what feasible answer remains”. I suppose he and I diverge a bit on a few of the more salient matters since I don’t really have that ever-ready attention to detail, being, as it were, a bit of a duffer, and I’m afraid I’m really not awfully adaptable as I go all wobbly in a crisis. The idea of Holmes’ constant habitual vigilance is, I regret to say, often a bit more than the old Spode grey cells
could comfortably manage, drifting off, as they rather tended to do into what some poet or other described quite neatly as “endless flights of fancy”. Meaning, I suppose, that the old intellectual balloon slipped its moorings once in a while and floated away into the wide blue yonder. Although, I do have to say that Sherlock and I do have a number of common features. Not facially or dentally or anything, you understand, but, well, er…features. For want of a better word. Under the bedclothes with my torch, hidden from Mother’s prying eyes, Spode Minor learned a lot about Sherlock’s methods. “You know my methods, Spode” I used to imagine him saying. One thing we did seem to have in common was the fact that when he was working on a problem, he worked alone. “This is quite the three-pipe problem, Spode”, I imagined him saying “and I beg that you will not speak to me for fifty minutes”. Which, coincidentally, was exactly the length of the Lone Ranger episodes on the television, so I had no difficulty leaving him to his own devices, and felt sure that when we returned, he’d have everything sorted. I used to imagine that Sherlock and I made up a proper double act. John Watson was really no match for the Spode/Holmes combo; I used to think of him lagging behind because he’d forgotten his old Service revolver, while S and I were sleuthing for real, the game afoot. It was always so very gratifying when we had to tell Watson afterwards how it was done, which left him open-mouthed with astonishment and our trifling efforts seemed to him to be nothing less than sheer genius. The television can be such a disappointment, don't you find? Especially American television. Nothing against our transatlantic cousins of
course, apart from the mangling of language, but they do like to take a good idea and, well, ruin it. Take Sherlock, for example. Whoever could have imagined that an enthusiastic somebody would come up with the idea of an American version? Transplanting SH to New York City is as foreign as marmalade in Madagascar. To make matters worse, they not only called it "Elementary" but they came up with a Joan Watson! Delicious as Lucy Liu undoubtedly is, my breakfast curdled in my stomach as she and Jonny Lee Miller solved their way across New York for three whole series. Had I, like Watson, suffered from an old war wound, a Jezail bullet in the shoulder, to be precise, it would have given me sharp, disapproving cramps every time the theme music was played. OK, OK, call me Mister Old-Fashioned, but Sherlock and Victorian London are as inseparable as the holes and the Emmental. Finally, just to reassure everyone, old Perry isn't exactly a Mickey No-Mates, much as I may have led you to believe to the contrary. I have hundreds of friends, mostly on Facebook and I've actually met a few, some more than once. I was reminded of a disastrous TV ad campaign for a brand of cigarette called 'Strand', in days when that sort of thing was allowed. The catchphrase was "You're never alone with a Strand." A wet London street and a reflective individual puffing away in the rain meant that people associated smoking the things with being lonely and were put off from buying them. Which is my way of saying that, if you don't go for wet Victorian London, don't be put off reading the Sherlock stories, which, coincidentally enough, were first published in 'The Strand Magazine.' It was just a few short years ago that I was aggressively resisting the pressure to swap my regular mobile phone for one of the new Smart Phones that were taking the market by storm. I had a perfectly adequate mobile telephone for making and receiving calls, and a nice camera for taking pictures, so what more did I need? But I caved in after a friend showed me his new Samsung and my argument against using (what I perceived as) a ridiculously small and unfriendly keypad fast disappeared. I was impressed by the image quality and the deals offered at the time, so took the plunge and joined (belatedly) the Smart Phone revolution. Three years on and I have to admit that I now wonder how I ever survived without one, although I still don’t understand or use my phone’s full functionality. In fact, I felt quite lost when on vacation earlier this year and my phone’s motherboard died without warning – no contacts; no photos; no GPS; no life; and no alternative but to buy a new Smart Phone as fast as possible so I could reconnect to the world. It made me realise how much we all rely on the ability to communicate 24/7, and how much life has changed even in my own relatively short lifetime. After all, I grew up before even the ‘housebrick’ mobile phones had been invented. But is it a change for the better, or for the worse? Are we able to use this technology simply as a tool, or has it become an integral part of our being? To what extent are we addicted, or have become dependent? The benefits of this modern technology cannot be denied: the wealth of knowledge available at our fingertips; the access to instant voice and visual communication with friends and loved ones; the ability to capture and share all those magic moments, and much more besides. But we need to be aware of the pitfalls and dangers too.

Recent research in the United States has suggested that students cannot successfully multi-task and use mobile phones while they are studying. Researchers found that students sending and receiving messages while studying scored lower test results and were less effective at tasks such as note taking. The study examined how a generation of ‘voracious texters’ might be affected by so many online distractions. It found that when students did not use mobiles, they were better at being able to recall information. As I write this, the exam season is pretty much over and I hope that all of you who sat exams will have received the grades you wanted, needed and deserved. But where results have been disappointing and grades lower than expected, the research by academics at Ohio University, Illinois State University and Nebraska University might add to family arguments about whether teenagers, or even older students, really can learn at the same time as using several online devices.
Competing for attention In the study, Mobile Phones in the Classroom: Examining the Effects of Texting, Twitter, and Message Content on Student Learning, a series of tests were carried out with 145 undergraduates. It wanted to find out how well young people could carry out a task, such as watching a lecture on a video and then taking notes and answering questions, while facing a series of interruptions on their internet-connected mobile phones. Mobiles and portable devices are now such a pervasive part of young people's lives, the researchers wanted to see how much students could really study at the same time as interacting online. Among US university undergraduates, the study says
it is quite common for students to use mobile phones through classes and in lectures, as well as when they are studying at home. "It is a common occurrence to observe students who are physically present, yet mentally preoccupied by non-course-related material on their mobile devices”. The study showed students video lectures, while getting them to use mobile phones in different ways - such as asking them questions related to their social life or sending a link to a photo or asking a question related to the lecture. There were also experiments with the impact of different numbers of texts and messages. Other groups of students watched the same lecture, but without any interruptions. When the students were tested on their ability to recall information and in multiple-choice questions, there were significantly better results for those who had ‘abstained’ from using mobile devices. Researchers suggest that one of the biggest challenges instructors face in the 21st Century college classroom is the struggle of retaining student interest and engagement while students remain connected to the outside world through their mobile devices. There have also been debates in the UK about whether mobiles should be allowed in school. Just a couple of months ago, a study published by the London School of Economics looked at schools in four English cities and found test scores increased by more than 6% in those which banned phones. But if Mobile Phone technology presents such a distraction to students in their academic work, I fear that the distraction to drivers on our roads is far worse: much more serious and dangerous. Even during Ramadan, when I had anticipated a greater observance of law and good behaviour, I remained shocked at the number of drivers who seem unable to drive without having a mobile phone in their hands. Waiting at a junction and observing a steady flow of vehicles turning right and crossing in front of me to access one of the major ring roads, it was horrifying to see around 80% of the drivers negotiating the turn with just one hand on the steering wheel whilst the other was holding a phone to their ear! Worse still are those drivers who are visibly texting whilst driving. I cannot count the number of times in the last week when I needed to take avoiding action because cars drifted out of lane whilst the drivers were focussed on texting instead of paying full and proper attention to the road and other road users! As in all things, I suggest that it is not the object that is at fault but peoples’ misuse of it. We must learn that we need to have control over our Smart Phones and our use of them, and not let the Smart Phones control us, or our lives! July, 2015

doing what you love comes naturally and more easily than one anticipates. My two daughters, ironically, were the key to helping me understand the simplicity of life; I return to my childhood roots when I see them scribble and doodle all over. Also, customer remarks towards my designs give me a boost to challenge myself with what to do next. It wasn't until I started doing exhibitions that I noticed what people said about my work - that it is unique and has a positive energy.
Tell us about yourself. At a young age, I became fascinated with the art of doll-making and painting. I built my world around both and escaped into my own subjective bubble. Despite developing my skills and being grateful to those who encouraged me, I still felt a void in not being able to bridge the gap between my creative outlet and the expected society norm of having a fixed job. Tell us about your education. I graduated from Arizona State University with a Political Science degree and a minor in International Studies - a completely different field from what I am doing currently. What sparked your interest in flowers? When I started Bespoke in January 2014 it was all about flower arrangement and how it could be personalised to cater to each individual taste. It was few months later that I started doing floral arts. How did your floral-inspired sketches start? Because of my love for doll-making and drawing, I started combining naturally dried flowers with painted figures. The first portrait I did was for my friend, who is an artist, and from there I started posting my floral art work on Instagram (everything was recycled once I posted the image). Then people kept asking about the floral art and if I could make something for them to keep. So I started to use dried flowers and framed them so they were preserved properly. What materials do you use and how did you come to use them? The materials used are real flowers which I dry to maintain the natural textures and hues of the plant. I also use acrylic paint and sometimes water colours. If a customer requests it, I use artificial flowers for some of the floral arts. What are your favorite flowers to work with? If you had asked ‘What is your favourite flower?’ I would have said peonies, because they are delicate and I love how the petals open up. But for my floral art I would say roses and statice because the flowers dry exquisitely, retaining their color and beauty. Some people would label your work as decorative art or handicraft art, but how would you personally label or describe your work? It is actually both decorative and hand crafted art, but I would like to label it ‘floral art’. It has the beauty of maintaining the natural shapes of the flowers and petals combined with minimal figurines. What inspires and motivates you? What does your creative process look like? It is the minimalism of combining flowers with sketched figures of women and girls in floral designs, using acrylic paint and maintaining the natural flower shapes. At first, for a simple Instagram post I would use fresh flowers because they have a different texture and color to give a different feel to the portrait. These freshly made portraits are then recycled and I would dry the flowers. The pictures of these floral arts are later printed on different items from my designs. It was later that I started to do floral arts from dried flowers and I would frame them to maintain their delicate status. How long does it take to create one piece of art? I usually request one weeks’ notice, because this gives me more time to dry specific flowers. But it really depends; sometimes I stock readymade floral art that customers can choose from. What are the strengths and challenges of your personal studio space? To be honest, my work space is my home. I am still looking for the right place to rent. Will you turn your flower designs into real clothes? Yes, I actually have done that, for ladies and small girls. I received good feedback and will be prepared for future exhibitions. Also, I am not limiting myself to any household accessories; I have made cushions, mugs, cards, make-up bags, napkins and trays. What’s your motto in life? What is your message for us at CityPages? If there was one thing to learn from my experience it would be this: Never give up on your goals or passionate hobbies even when you think they are unsustainable or unnecessary. Dear World, Humanity is lost and we all need to find it and put it back into this world. It doesn’t matter what religion you believe in, what country you come from or what race you are - we are all equal and we should all have respect and love for each other. We should want the best for each other - we would all work well if we all came together as one. At the end of the day, you are a human being, I am a human being and your neighbours are human beings - we mustn’t forget to care for each other. Have a heart, a loving heart that welcomes people from all walks of life with open arms. Kindness is a beautiful act - it really does make the world a better place to live in. My heart aches to think how divided the world is - but this world doesn’t have to be divided- it is up to us to make that change. When we pass each other on the streets we should exchange a smile - we should protect each other. At the moment, the world might not be as connected and together as we would hope but that doesn’t mean it will stay like that forever. Today, I ask you to love each other. There is more good in this world than evil - so let’s stand together and show all the good that there is. When the world stands together as one - peace and humanity will be brought back. It is up to us to make sure this world is a beautiful place to be in and that no matter what; we all watch out for each other. How wonderful would it be if we all treated each other with the greatest of love? We all dream of a world like that and that dream can come true - nothing is impossible. Treat your brothers and sisters of this world the way you would want to be treated and most importantly don’t forget to be compassionate. Everybody is fighting their own battles and struggles behind closed doors but we can put our hand out and let them know that they are never alone. Let’s come together and spread peace. We are all family.

I’ve never been particularly good with a needle. When I was younger, my grandmother spent many hours trying to teach me to knit, sew and crochet but I never quite mastered the art. I put it down to lack of patience rather than lack of talent but either way, my ability to make anything from fabric or wool is practically non-existent. I managed to knit a couple of blanket squares at school and I can just about sew a button on, but for anything more adventurous, my knowledge and ability are sadly lacking; and nowadays, I probably wouldn’t know one end of a knitting needle from the other. Up until now, I can’t say I’ve regretted not learning this particular trade. However, one visit to the textile souq left me feeling incredibly frustrated at my lack of stitch prowess; and a tad sorry I didn’t pay more attention to my grandmother. Given my time again, I would observe properly and listen intently as she donned her thimble ready to tuck, tack or rick rack. She made countless dresses for me when I was growing up and despite complaining when I was made to wear an identical dress to my sister, I have to admit, she did a really great job. So too do many of my friends here in Kuwait. I’m often shocked (and very impressed) when they tell me they’ve made things themselves. My feelings of inadequacy increase at the sight of each handmade creation. And they’re not just simple things like scarves; they make kaftans with tassels, tops with lace, even handbags - all inspired by the fabric souq. It’s difficult to know where to start. The long-standing, labyrinth of pathways is an invitation to explore and each vendor is eager to entice you in and tempt you with their beautiful displays of colour. It’s impossible to leave empty handed. Whether you’re looking for a radiant red, brilliant blue or shimmering silver, you’re guaranteed to find it – and much more besides. It’s a magical maze of material that stimulates your imagination and conjures up an entire imaginary wardrobe. Even the smell is intoxicating; the scent woven into the fabrics tells tales of faraway places, exotic journeys and mysterious secrets. It’s no wonder I’m unable to resist. During my last visit, I had the pleasure of meeting a delightful, old gentleman named Mehri. Mehri is one of the many porters at the souq, there to assist those of us needing a little help to carry our purchases. He has worked at the souq for 22 years and his charming, courteous manner is typical of the welcome you can expect throughout the souq. My grandmother would’ve loved it, although I’m sure she would have been surprised by the male dominance of what was, in her day, a distinctly female profession. She made regular trips to the ‘rag-market’ in the UK and would spend hours searching for fabrics, lace, cottons and buttons to make dresses and skirts. I’m filled with nostalgia when I wander around the souq, admiring the thousands of rolls of fabric and bartering with the vendors. Because despite not being able to sew, I always give in to temptation. There are silks in every colour of the rainbow; cottons plain and patterned; and linen, perfect for that cool summer suit. There are so many beautiful shades and designs it’s difficult to decide which to choose. I could (and I have) spent a fortune on fabric, even though I can barely thread a needle! The last thing I’m thinking when I run my fingers along the cool, silky fabric is what I’m actually going to do with it. Luckily, there are professionals at the souq who can help me out of this particular quandary. I’m now on first name terms with one such professional who has not only made scarves and shirts from the fabric I’ve bought, he’s also turned up trousers, mended holes and personalized aprons with clever lettered stitching. He also transformed a long-sleeved shirt into a short-sleeved shirt – a job deemed necessary following a particularly heated altercation with my iron! excuse to browse the stalls - and all are unbelievably cheap. So even if, like me, you don’t know a sewing machine from a sandwich toaster, you can still enjoy a visit to the souq, marvel at the beautiful display of fabrics and end up with a unique item of clothing you’ll want to wear again and again. We can’t all afford designer clothes but sourcing your own fabric and owning a made-to-measure garment is just as satisfying - and significantly cheaper. One popular vendor sells his entire stock of fabric at 1KWD per square meter and if it’s accessories you’re after look no further; there is a huge selection of beads, tassels, lace, jewellery and other decorative delights. In fact, everything you could possibly need to individualize your outfit. But it doesn’t stop at clothes. How about some new curtains to liven up your lounge? Maybe some cushions to add colour to your couch? Or a jazzy tablecloth to decorate your dining table? Experts are on hand to advise on the best material for your particular requirements as well as the quantity you’re likely to need. You can even buy genuine Swarovski crystals at the ‘Crystal House’. The possibilities are endless and with some outlets also offering readymade goods, there really is something for everyone – even those of us with a fear of needles! ‘Prince Tailors’ opened its doors in the fabric souq over 35 years ago. The shop is owned by Mohd Mukhtar and attracts a wide variety of customers including those from the UK, USA, Italy, Germany and Canada. It has an excellent reputation with both ex-pat and local communities. Zulfqar Babar, Mohd’s brother, has worked there since 1997. The skilled Pakistani tailor learned his trade in Kuwait and enjoys his job at the souq. “It is always busy and I enjoy talking to the customers” he says. Zulfqar gets great satisfaction from creating garments from start to finish. “Wool is my favourite” he says “I like making men’s suits the best”. This is apparently the most popular request from people seeking the tailor’s services. He told me it takes just eight hours to make a suit, from measuring, cutting, stitching and then fitting. Customers can choose their fabric in the morning and return for their made-to-measure suit in the evening. Now that’s what I call service! (Murgab, Souk Al-Safat, Shop 3241. Tel 22432424) Shoaib Al-Ahmed’s father, originally from Iran, founded ‘AlJamal’ in 1970. It is one of oldest shops in the souq and is extremely popular with locals and ex-pats alike. Shoaib travels regularly to Como, Italy to buy fabrics. He sources everything from simple cotton and polyester to heavy, textured jacard, beautifully soft ‘Celine’ satin and the finest silks. “Jacard is very popular at the moment” he says. Shoaib works alongside Bomorad, another long-standing member of the Al-Jamal team. Together, they attract a large number of regular, loyal customers to their shop, not just from Kuwait but also from Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. People trust their advice and appreciate their knowledge and expertise. “People who come here are not just customers, they are my friends” Shoaib told me. With a successful wholesale account as well as individual sales, he hopes the business will continue to thrive. “It is a very good business. I meet lots of people and get to travel often. Life is good”. Whilst the souq is very much a tradition which reflects Kuwait’s heritage and culture, Al-Jamal recognises the need to keep up with the times. More and more of us are asking questions about the quality and source of our food. We want to know where the meat for our burgers came from, where the potatoes for our fries were grown and what oil is used to cook them in. This interest doesn’t just stem from our own health concerns; it has grown from the desire to protect and preserve our environment and to improve our quality of life. So seriously in fact, they flew a team from Kuwait to Australia to visit the Aussie teams responsible for supplying their grass-fed, free-range, Halal beef. They witnessed firsthand the free-range cows grazing happily in their natural habitat and wandering freely across the wide, open landscape. Unlike cattle raised in factory farms, these free-range cows are not exposed to Mad Cow or E.coli disease and

they produce far less CO2, which is good news for the environment - as well as the farmers! Determined to witness the entire process, the team also visited the abattoir to satisfy themselves that the highest quality hygiene standards were being observed and to confirm the Halal authentication process. After spending time with both the facility manager and Muslim butcher they left the abattoir, safe in the knowledge that their organic burgers were exactly that. The team promoted their #LivingFreeRange experience upon their return from ‘Down Under’, keen to share their pride in their totally organic burgers as well as their organic potatoes (grown right here in Kuwait) and their heart-healthy olive oil. The result of these organic ingredients is of course, a tastier and healthier burger. But the team’s work was not yet done! With the opening of their new restaurant in Qortuba fast approaching, there was no time to waste. Having already demonstrated their passion for ‘getting involved’ the Elevation Burger team rolled up their sleeves and tackled their next project. While excited about the location at the co-operative mall, they realized that the building’s look and feel didn’t reflect their modern,
vibrant spirit. They believed the people of Qortuba deserved to enjoy Elevation’s delicious, organic, grass-fed beef in beautiful surroundings so they offered to revamp the entire façade at their own cost. The Cooperative’s board accepted their proposal and were extremely supportive throughout the entire process. Keen to involve local talent, the team worked with architect Khaled Al Qamlas from Tasmeem International Est. to design and implement the building’s new façade. Together with the Co-operative’s board, it was agreed that any changes required by other tenants in the building should be approved by architect Al Qamlas to ensure the original, intended spirit remains uncompromised. It attracted plenty of interest from the locals who recognised the team’s desire to give something back to the community and who were quick to engage with the project. The premises were given a complete face-lift and the eye-catching façade is sure to turn heads. Made predominantly from natural materials, it reinforces their eco-friendly beliefs and they hope to encourage others to become involved in community related activities. Community spirit is very much at the forefront of Elevation’s ethos and the new
restaurant will be a great place for people to meet and to embrace the community spirit. The team is always happy to answer questions about their products or their stores, but they also believe in going out and showing people what Elevation Burger is all about. The visit to Australia demonstrated this belief and the theme will continue with the sense of community at their Qortuba store. In addition to the official launch next month, there will be a schedule of activities to involve customers, local people and their families and friends. How the cattle spend their days and what they eat, results in happy and healthy cows; and surely, what’s good for the cattle is also good for us! Pimple/Acne is experienced by the majority of teenagers. It is estimated that 85% of teens will have acne at some point during their adolescent years. Despite the large numbers of teens with similar acne conditions, it still affects their social life and self esteem. In severe cases, it can leave the individual with physical and emotional scars that can last a lifetime. So what is acne and what can you do about it?
What is acne and what causes it? Acne is a condition of the skin that shows up as different types of bumps. These bumps can be blackheads, whiteheads, pimples or cysts. Teens get acne because of the hormonal changes that come with puberty. If your parents had acne as teens, it's more likely that you will too. The good news is that for most people, acne goes away almost completely by the time they are out of their teens. The type of acne that a lot of teens get is called Acne Vulgaris (the meaning of "vulgaris" isn't as bad as it sounds - it means "of the common type"). It usually shows up on the face, neck, shoulders, upper back and chest. The hair follicles, or pores, in your skin contain sebaceous glands (also called oil glands). These glands make sebum, which is oil that lubricates your hair and skin. Most of the time, the sebaceous glands make the right amount of sebum. As a teen’s body begins to mature and develop though, hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands to make more sebum and the glands may become overactive. Pores become clogged if there is too much sebum and too many dead skin cells. Bacteria can then get trapped inside the pores and multiply, causing swelling and redness - the start of acne. If a pore gets clogged up and closes but bulges out from the skin, you're left with a whitehead. If a pore gets citypageskuwait.com
clogged up but stays open, the top surface can darken and you're left with a blackhead. Sometimes the wall of the pore opens, allowing sebum, bacteria and dead skin cells to make their way under the skin - and you're left with a small, red bump called a pimple (sometimes pimples have a pus-filled top from the body's reaction to the bacterial infection). Clogged pores that open up very deep in the skin can cause nodules, which are infected lumps or cysts that are bigger than pimples and can be painful. Occasionally, large cysts that seem like acne may be boils caused by a staph infection.
What Can Be Done? Many cases of teen acne can be successfully controlled with over-the-counter treatments. If scarring has already occurred then laser treatments are extremely beneficial at minimizing the depth and severity of the scarring. More than 40% of teen acne is serious enough to require treatment by a doctor. If after several weeks of home treatment there is no improvement, a doctor should be consulted. This is especially true for boys. Young men are much less likely to see a doctor about their acne, even though they tend to have longer lasting and more severe acne than girls. This may be due to the fact that young women feel more comfortable expressing their feelings regarding their skin and are more comfortable asking for help. Parents need to be aware that their young man may be extremely distressed about his skin, but could be unwilling or unable to voice his discomfort. It can be so hard to be patient while waiting for the skin to heal, so all teens need to be reminded that treatment takes time. Nearly every case of acne can be successfully controlled, given time and the right treatments.

Last month, I wrote an article discussing the case of hypothyroidism, in which the thyroid is not producing enough of the hormones the body needs to function. This month, we are discussing the other side of the spectrum in which the thyroid is producing too much. The thyroid is a gland located just below the Adam’s Apple. This gland influences many of the bodily functions such as physical growth and development, organ function, fertility, body temperature and most commonly, metabolism. How does that work exactly? Well the thyroid works together with the pituitary gland and when your thyroid isn’t producing enough hormones, your brain produces another hormone that tells the thyroid to produce more. In the case of hyperthyroidism, the body is producing too many hormones that manifest in symptoms. These symptoms of hyperthyroidism manifest themselves as muscle spasms, acne, eye twitch, hair loss, headaches, mood swings, fluctuating temperatures, nausea, fatigue and even rapid heart beat. These can also be symptoms of other conditions so it is safest to have your blood tested to make sure what you are experiencing are symptoms of a thyroid problem and not anything else. way to approach it. Diet. If you have been reading my articles you will notice that I mention diet a lot. That is because research shows that diet plays an important role in your body’s function. Hyperthyroidism requires a diet plan that is high in protein and iron and contains a lot of antioxidant foods such as blueberries, cherries, tomatoes, squash and red peppers. Reduce the stress levels in your life. Stress is the root of all evil when it comes to your body’s coping mechanism; the lower the stress levels in your life, the better you are able to take control of your symptoms. Reducing stress doesn’t mean going to the gym after a long day at work and taking it out on the punching bag, but more in terms of doing some restorative yoga, perhaps reading a book or listening to some relaxing music. Avoid all forms of caffeine and stimulants that could increase your heart rate and create that nervous feeling. Dealing with a thyroid issue is difficult at times, but once you get into a routine it is much easier to manage. Just keep in mind that this is not a cure, but a way to deal with the condition and prevent it from getting any worse. Consult your doctor should you have any concerns or are experiencing any of these symptoms.

What are some treatments of pain? There are many varied treatments available for pain, thanks to the advancement of modern medicine. Since the degree of pain varies among patients, your treatment plan will be tailored to your needs. Treatment may include one approach or a combination of medications, therapies and procedures. These include:
Medications
Pain Killers Narcotic painkillers are often used to treat acute pain or cancer pain. Anti Inflammatory drugs Aspirin- like drugs are the most commonly used medications. They not only reduce swelling and irritation, but also relieve pain. Anti-Depressants Originally only used to treat depression, studies show that these medications can treat pain in certain situations, as well as having the added benefit of helping patients sleep at night. Anti-seizure medications These may help relieve certain types of pain by reducing abnormal electrical discharges in damaged nerves.
Treatments
Injection Treatment Local anaesthetics and steroids can be injected around nerves or into joints. These may act to reduce swelling, irritation, muscle spasms or abnormal nerve transmissions that cause pain. Electrical Stimulation Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is the most common form of electrical stimulation. TENS consists of a small, battery-operated device that stimulates nerve fibers through the skin to diminish pain. Physical Therapy Exercise, whirlpool, ultrasound, massage and manipulation are some of the treatments performed by physical therapy. Relaxation Training in various forms of
relaxation therapy are often used to relieve pain, reduce muscle spasms and diminish stress. Surgery When necessary, surgical treatments may be recommended.
Injection Treatments Epidural Steroid Injections Certain steroid drugs (drugs related to cortisone) possess strong anti-inflammatory properties. When injected around the inflamed nerve, disc, joint or ligament, these drugs stop inflammation and relieve pain. To place this medicine as close as possible to the site of the inflammation, it is injected into the region of the spine called epidural space. Therapeutic Peripheral Nerve Injections Injections given near a specific nerve or group of nerves to relieve pain. Intercostals’ Nerve Block An Injection in the area between two ribs. An Intercostals’ nerve block is performed for pain due to herpes zoster (commonly known as shingles), an acute viral infection that causes inflammation of the nerves that spread outward from the spine. It may also be performed for pain caused from surgical incision or to help determine the cause of your pain (diagnostic pain block). Lumbar Sympathetic Ganglion Injections These are used for complex regional pain syndrome in the legs. Spinal Facet Joint Injections Performed if your doctor suspects that your neck or lower back pain may be caused in part by the small facet joints of the spine. Facet joints are located on the side of your spine, away from the spinal cord. Facet joints injections are performed for both therapeutic and diagnostic purposes and can be performed on the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral regions of the spine. Celiac Plexus Injections Performed for the treatment of upper abdominal pain, most often due to cancer or chronic pancreatitis.

Pregnancy is great news for every couple. Finding out there’s a baby on the way can be very exciting but overwhelming at the same time. Expecting mothers are advised to eat healthy, take rest, exercise and start preparing for the big day. This article discusses useful tips and important items to include in your hospital bags. It is very helpful to start preparing the hospital bag ahead of time and have the bag ready by week 35 so that expecting mothers are relaxed and ready to head to hospital whenever labor kicks in. Make sure you have two separate bags, one for you and one for the baby. Some women take two bags for themselves, one during labor and another for after giving birth. It is better to have a small bag with extra change, a towel and some hygiene products for your husband to bring. Try to avoid over packing by asking the hospital what they provide for you and the baby so you can check these items off your list. You can also ask mothers you know about their personal experience in packing their hospital bags.

lSome necessary paper work, such as insurance card, ID card and birth plan (if you have one, make sure citypageskuwait.com
to discuss it with your health care provider ahead of time). Make sure you have them in a folder that can be easily found in your bag. It is advised to visit the hospital a week or two before giving birth to open a file and provide all necessary documents, such as copies of IDs and passports as well as a copy of the marriage license (please check with the hospital). lIf you are on any special medication, please don’t forget to pack it and inform your healthcare provider and hospital staff so that they should remind you to take it. lMother’s clothing, such as breastfeeding-friendly nightgowns/PJs and clothes, a comfortable robe or sweater, socks to keep you warm while in the labor/ delivery room and comfortable clothes to wear when going home. Many hospitals provide slippers when mothers walk around the hall during labor. If not, you can have your own pair with you (maybe one for the room and another for the bathroom). You can also bring your own undergarments, such as two or three maternity/breastfeeding bras (not under-wired) and underwear (though many hospitals provide disposable ones). lToiletries and personal items: toothbrush and paste, mouthwash, hair brush, dry hair shampoo, deodorant, hair band, face wash and moisturizer, baby wipes to freshen up, antibacterial wipes, make-up and glasses or contact lenses with solution if you wear them. A
lip balm is very useful during labor to avoid dry or chapped lips. It is preferred to have all items in travel size to avoid unnecessary weight. lHealthy snacks such as walnuts, almonds, dates, raisins and bananas (please check with your OBGYN about what snacks to eat). Remember to hydrate and bring water, infused or regular. It is also useful to bring lots of change (coins) for the vending machines. lYou can bring your own comfort items such as a warm water bottle, your own TENS machine, massage oil and fit/birthing ball (check with your hospital). lDevices, such as camera (with charger, extra memory card or battery) and cell-phone (with charger). You should also have a pen and a paper. lA written phone list (as a back up to the one on your phone) with numbers of your healthcare provider, as well as your family and friends to share the good news. lBreastfeeding necessities, such as breast pads, nursing bras, nursing cover, nursing pillow, and if needed; nipple cream, breast compresses, a small towel to wipe the breasts, a nipple shield to help with latching and a breast pump (although most hospitals can provide the latter, but it is a good idea to get used to your own pump). lA special gift for your support team, most importantly your husband and maybe also a gift for your older child if he/she will be a big sister or brother! lThank you cards or gifts for the nurse and staff are a nice personal touch. There are other optional items to pack, that will help set the mood in the labor room such as candles (again check with the hospital) soft music, picture frames of loved ones, comfy pillow (with a different colored pillow case to avoid confusion with hospital pillows). Other items that we found moms also pack, are a towel, hairdryer, an eye patch and ear plugs (hospitals can be very bright and loud, especially in a labor ward); and to keep your mind busy or at ease maybe a book or magazine.

For your new bundle of joy, it is preferred by many moms to keep each outfit in a zipper lock bag (a onesie, an outfit, a hat, a pair of gloves, a swaddle and a burping towel) so that anyone can easily find it in the bag. Many hospitals provide baby outfits, diapers, wipes and diaper rash creams. Checking with the hospital before labor can help you avoid over packing. Mohammed Zainal and Zahra Taqi Mohammed Zainal and Zahra Taqi are deserved of their Power Couple status. Having both carved out successful careers in their respective fields, they have since added a general trading company to their list of achievements. Despite their hectic schedules, Mohammed and Zahra still found time to tell us about their challenges, aspirations and the ability to surprise each other with the perfect gift! Please tell us about your academic backgrounds. M:I went to Southern University in Louisiana where I graduated with a science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Z:After finishing high school in Kuwait, I moved to Boston to pursue a science degree in Speech Language pathology. After graduating I worked in various institutions to grow my knowledge in the field before moving back to Kuwait. My move to Kuwait was quite brief after which we moved to Japan and there I went back to school to earn a professional degree as a Life, Parent and Executive coach.
How and where did the two of you meet?
How do you handle a work-life balance and challenges in a dynamic work environment? M:Good planning makes it easier to strike a good work-life balance. We are very meticulous when it comes to scheduling. Z:We always have schedules and routines, which help not just the two of us but also our children, Ghalia and Yousef. We usually have a schedule and we stick to it; some people may call us rigid in that sense but we have found it works for us in light of our very busy schedules and also our kids’ busy schedules too. Our family always comes first and that helps keep things in perspective especially when life gets hectic; and boy does it get hectic sometimes.
M: and Z: We met in Boston when both of us were students.
When do you spend time with each other? How do you unwind?
As a professional, what are the qualities you admire in your spouse?
M:We make sure to spare at least thirty minutes to one hour for us every day. After a busy day, we both know we at least have that piece of the day saved for each other. We unwind by sharing our ideas, watching a bit of TV or reading.
M:I admire her dedication to her work and the passion she has for her dreams and goals. Zahra is a strong and hard working woman, which is what attracted me to her from the start. Her passion for life is translated very clearly in everything she does and in those around her. Z:Mohammed is extremely ethical in general but his work ethics are impeccable. He is also very resilient and adaptable to change, all of which are qualities that come in very handy in more situations than I can recall. He is always very calm and collected and during a time of crisis or when an urgent matter arises, he is able to think of solutions methodically without panicking. One other quality I admire about him is his awareness of other cultures and the differences of how other cultures deal with different situations. This helps him when dealing with customers from very diverse cultures many times in the same day.
Where do you concur and where do you differ from each other? M:We share much of the same ideas and goals, but the way we approach things and the angles from which we see things is different. Z:On matters of our family and future we are pretty much on the same page; we both have the same vision and work in tandem to achieve these goals and aspirations. Our styles differ somewhat but that just makes the ideas we both bring to the table very diverse, enriching our experience and our life together.

Z:We spend at least thirty minutes every day with each other to reconnect after a busy day. This becomes harder when we are both not in the same place physically but we always manage to find a way to stay connected to each other. We both enjoy reading and a good novel or book is always a wonderful reprieve and also a favorite show on TV is a great way to unwind together.
What is the best gift you received from each other? M:Zahra always surprises me with her gifts; each gift shows how well she knows me as it always something that I really wanted to get for myself. I’m an avid outdoors man and she is in tune to what I am eying for a particular season which is exactly what she gets me. There are times when she has conspired with other people to get me that perfect gift; the funniest of which was a bird calling machine. Z:Mohammed has great taste in general and always gives the best and most meaningful gifts. One of the best gifts he has ever given me is a beautiful keepsake album from our time in Japan. He worked with professional photographers, who also happen to be our good friends, to chronicle a full year from our life in Japan, capturing some of our best moments together and the beauty of the four seasons in Japan.

Mohammed is an avid mechanical engineer who found his niche working in the oil industry and serving his country trough his work. His dedication lead to him being appointed as assistant manager at the KPC’s Tokyo, Japan office where he served for six years. He inherited his entrepreneurial skills from his grandfather, whom he admires dearly, and ran his family’s business prior to moving to Japan. Since moving back to Kuwait, he has set up his own general trading company where he is currently CEO. Walking in his beloved grandfather’s footsteps, Mohammed continues to thrive in his business, while creating something unique to himself and his own vision. Zahra grew up watching her dad running a centre for children with disabilities; her mom was by his side every step of the way. Her upbringing sparked a love for helping people and inspired her to become a speech language pathologist. She went on to study in Boston and earn a degree in the field where she also worked to grow her expertise. Returning to Kuwait, she practiced at Al Sabah Hospital before moving with her husband to Tokyo, Japan. A firm believer in always reinventing yourself and getting out of your comfort zone, Zahra did just that. She went back to school, earning a professional degree as a Life, Parent and Executive coach then started her own company, Milestones Coaching. Through coaching, she continues to help people around the world get the life they want. Zahra was also inspired by her life in Japan and wanted to bring some of that back with her to Kuwait. I love surprising her every once in a while though with something she has not seen coming. Z:There are too many to count, as we are both avid travellers. We love going on holidays together and seeing the world through the eyes of our children either trekking through the forests in Thailand, the hot springs in Japan, feeding the Orangutans in Malaysia or exploring the museums in London. My favorite of these holidays is a quick getaway Mohammed planned for my birthday last year which was a surprise trip to Oman. We both had very busy and hectic schedules ahead and it was the perfect way to recharge together.
One would imagine that both of you probably discuss business issues a lot at home too. Does that happen? M:Definitely! I think part of what makes our business successful is that it always has to do with something we love and have a passion for. I think if we were to work on something we are not particularly passionate about, we would not be able to give it our all. We talk about work at home because works starts as a passion for something at home then we pursue it until it materializes into something tangible in our business. Z:All the time! I value Mohammed’s opinion not only on a personal level but also on a professional level. Also the fact that he is my business partner means that work is always at home unless we decide mutually to switch off.
How are household responsibilities divided? Who is the boss at home? M:We equally share our responsibilities and roles at home. Z:We are both very much equals and have never felt the need to have one of us be ‘boss’. I think we constantly both give more than a 100% towards our family, home and our life together in general that there is never need for control from either one of us.
How do you manage your time together? Do you have any time left over for your marriage at all? M:Definitely! Our marriage always comes first and business is second. We were best friends and a married couple long before we became business partners; even during crunch time we still make time for the two of us.
Z:We learned early on in our marriage that the secret is to stay connected to each other and we have done exactly that every day for the duration of our marriage. Sometimes this is not so easy as we might be in different places physically, but we manage to find a way. Those precious thirty minutes every day are definitely one of the highlights of my day.
What have been your most challenging moments in life? M:Life is all about challenges and how we deal with these challenges. I think the biggest challenge was moving to Japan as a family. I had moved previously to the US as a student but that was a completely different experience than uprooting a whole family. With that challenge we persevered as a family, as parents and as a couple and were able to carve a place for ourselves in a completely new environment. Z:Every stage of our relationship has had its own milestones and with that, its own challenges. I am a firm believer that our growth happens only when we are outside our comfort zone and so in a sense I always look for the next challenge that we can embark on together, either as a couple or in regards to our business together. One of our biggest steps was to relocate as a family to Japan and as big of a challenge as this was, we have enjoyed and cherished this experience. If the clocks were to somehow magically turn and we were asked to go again, I would do so in a heartbeat.
How do you motivate each other during tough times at work? M:Thinking of the reward on the other side of the journey. Z:Keeping our eyes on the prize or the intended goal always helps ground us and motivates us to keep going and to keep giving.
Who is your professionally?

M:There are many people who have inspired me and taught me a lot during both my academic life and my professional career. Z:I find inspiration everywhere and in many different professions; a book, a lecture, a seminar or a memoire can all be inspirational. In the coaching field I find Robin Sharma, Tony Robbins and Terri Levine very inspirational and I have learned a lot from them. There are other people who I consider friends but who I admire on a professional level too.
What have you learnt from each other? M:Zahra is the most organized person I know and her organizational skills have definitely rubbed off on me.
Z:To never give up on my dreams. Mohammed is a very determined and hard working person and when he says he is going to do something, he will see it through to the end.
Do you have any common interests or hobbies? M:We both like working out and we enjoy working out together. Z:Mohammed loves the outdoors but I was never a big fan. I have come to love going out to the desert with him to explore nature and just listen to the silence that engulfs you. There is something majestic about being in the middle of the desert with nothing around you, just you and the elements. You realize how tiny you are in this vast universe.
Tell us about your children. How have they changed your life? M:Ghalia and Yousef are the best thing to ever happen to me. I never thought it was possible to love someone as much as I love them and they continuously inspire me to keep giving. They are both great fun to be around and I enjoy watching the world through their eyes. Z:Ghalia and Yousef are the joy of our life. Ghalia is a kind, smart and beautiful eightyear-old girl who is always very interested in what is going on around her and in the world. She cares about others tremendously and tries her very best to help people around her. She has a strong sense of justice and I always refer to her as the peacemaker in the family. Yousef is a thoughtful, clever and a very resilient six-year-old boy who brings so much joy to our family. He loves coming up with elaborate games and puts on great shows with Ghalia, especially when we are entertaining guests. I am very proud of them as they have shown great flexibility with our hectic lifestyle; they embrace kids from all cultures and backgrounds and I always joke how play-dates and birthdays in our house seem like a mini United Nations get together. How do you feel being selected as one of the CityPages Power Couples? M:I am delighted to have been chosen by CityPages and I wish your wonderful establishment much more accomplishments and success. BLOG-OFF! Let me set something straight. A blog is a regular written record of entries published on the worldwide web or in various printed mediums. It may also be referred to as a written diary or even a form of written on-line journalism. It can be written in an informal or conversational style. The common denominator here is the word written which supports the fact that a blogger is a writer. A blogger is not a wanna-be celebrity who is fond of taking selfies, whose aim is to appear on as many social media sites as possible and who thinks it’s acceptable to charge an inflated fee for personal appearances in and around Kuwait. Since when did these camera chasers decide to call themselves bloggers? Give them a pen and paper and they’d probably struggle to write anything remotely interesting or entertaining; which, I hasten to add, is the main purpose of a blog. A blog can be described as a publicly accessible written personal journal of an individual. The only publicly accessible thing about Kuwait’s so-called bloggers is themselves and their endless stream of Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat posts – or whatever the latest platform trend is for posting selfies. Can they not think up their own name for their collective activities? Why steal that of an existing, creative group citypageskuwait.com
of writers striving to up-date their followers with written news of their daily, weekly or monthly choice of topic? These posts can relate to any topic ranging from spirituality, photography, cookery, even falconry; but the key thing to note is that followers expect to read about such topics not just see photographs of the person posting them. They can be controversial (like this one perhaps?), educational, comical, even whimsical but most importantly of all, they must be written. A blogger is someone who writes content for a blog. They tend to take themselves, or if not themselves then their written word, very seriously. They don’t seek recognition, they seek respect. This is not the case for the pretend bloggers who are rarely seen without a big cheesy grin aimed at the nearest camera. Let’s not insult the true bloggers amongst us; the writers who still believe that a blog is a blog rather than a method of receiving the most amount of virtual ‘likes’ and therefore a measure of fake popularity. Many bloggers are anonymous – the exact opposite of what Kuwait’s pretend bloggers strive to be. So how about a new name guys? Hosting Hotshots? Fame Junkies? Limelight Lovers? Please, anything but bloggers!!

Hi, please introduce yourself to our readers. My name is Carol Souki. I'm a singer songwriter and music therapist from a Venezuelan Lebanese background.
When and how did you become interested in music? Since I was a child I’ve had a passion for Latin RnB and Middle Eastern flavors and rhythms. I grew up listening to this at home and at the live events my family took me to.
Who or what inspired your love for music? When I was encouraged to start vocal lessons I became aware of how much emotion, passion and strength I had vocally and knew it was something I couldn’t let go of. Legends like Sarah Vaughan, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Lara Fabian, Andrea Bocelli, Umm Kulthum, Fairuz and Celia Cruz have been my inspirations.
How would you describe your style of singing? It’s eclectic, RnB, soul/jazz with Latin nasal and chest voice elements - depending on the song choices! It is definitely very rooted with my emotions in relation to the song.
How often and where do you jam? I jam for fun with other musicians almost weekly if at gatherings, or at the studio. I’ve performed quite often in recent years. Thankfully, I've had the opportunity to perform and collaborate in many venues and at many events.
Where have you performed so far? I have performed in Boston USA at MIT University, Agganis Arena for the inauguration of Gloria Estefan, Kentucky USA with Zade Dirani, Bahrain, Fujairah, Lebanon on the LBC TV
channel and Dubai on MBC 1. I sang in Germany and Cyprus when I was in high school as part of a choir and in various venues in Kuwait - United Nations, GUST University, Bayt Lothan, AUK University and TV shows such as Al Rai and Al Watan TV channels.
Did you ever try Arabic singing? Yes but minimally. I will start working on Arabic vocal training.
Where else you would like to perform? I would love to perform one day at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Also any summer music festival events in Europe and the Blue Note in New York. Oh, the list goes on and on but inshallah, one day!
Do you play any instruments? Yes, I play basic guitar, flute and percussion to accompany myself or when working with patients/students through music therapy.
You usually sing cover songs, have you ever thought of writing your own songs? I actually sing my original work as well! Yes, I do write songs. Most of the songs are in English. I have one in Spanish and one with Arabic phrases. My songs are a reflection of my experiences and emotions.
Who is your favorite singer and why? I don’t have one favorite but I love Jill Scott for her passionate singing and meaningful melancholic and joyous lyrics. I love Beyonce's fierceness on stage, Mariah Carey's light but soulful and wide range. Also Celia Cruz's enthusiasm and charisma with the audience.
What has been your proudest moment? Having my own show at Bayt Lothan where I showcased my original works and some cover tunes. The venue was packed with more guests than it could fit! There was wide range social media publicity and support which made me feel so blessed and appreciated. To all who attended that event, or any of my events, THANK YOU!

Turkey I was pondering over my choice for this month’s recipe and my sister kept whispering in my ear, “Turkey. Do something Turkish. The food is so yummy”. At first I wasn’t too sure, but then I remembered my amazing trip to Istanbul, the fantastic food that I enjoyed near the Blue Mosque and my lovely friends, Tugce and Demircan - as well as the new friends I made during my stay there. I am yet to go back and visit other parts of Turkey but it is on my list of places to travel to. One dish I absolutely loved was the Turkish style pizza. I am a meat lover so the lahmacun was my favorite. Oh, the memories!
Lahmacun Turkish Pizza
Lahmacun is a thin flatbread covered with layers of spiced minced meat sauce, tomato and pepper. It is garnished with fresh salad and a creamy garlic sauce or a tangy zesty hot red pepper sauce. It is a really light meal, but filling and flavorful. I love spicy food so I add dried chili flakes to my lamb sauce, but this is completely optional.
INGREDIENTS:

Lamb Sauce l1 teaspoon chopped garlic l1 yellow onion, chopped l3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil l½ cup chopped fresh parsley l2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint l½ teaspoon paprika l½ teaspoon ground cumin l½ teaspoon ground coriander seeds l½ cup green bell pepper, diced l½ cup red bell pepper, diced l½ lemon, juiced l4 teaspoons olive oil l4 roma (plum) tomatoes, halved l500 g lean ground lamb l6 tablespoons double concentrated tomato paste lcayenne pepper to taste lsalt to taste Dough l3 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast l½ teaspoon white sugar l1 cup warm water (45 degrees C) l5 cups all-purpose flour l2 teaspoons salt l¼ cup vegetable oil l½ cup water Garlic Sauce l1 cup plain yogurt l½ teaspoon chopped fresh parsley l¼ teaspoon crushed garlic lsalt and ground black pepper to taste Garnish lChopped White Cabbage lChopped Red Cabbage
METHOD: 1.Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Combine the garlic, onion, basil, parsley, mint, paprika, cumin, coriander, diced bell peppers, lemon juice and olive oil in a food processor. Pulse the vegetables until finely chopped. Add the halved tomatoes and process until the mixture is a thick puree.
2.Place the lamb in the preheated skillet and reduce the heat to medium. Add the puree and the tomato paste and mix well. Cook and stir until the lamb is cooked through - 10 to 15 minutes. Stir in cayenne pepper and salt to taste. Transfer the mixture to a shallow baking dish and cool to room temperature. Refrigerate while making dough for flatbread. 3.Dissolve the yeast and sugar in 1 cup warm water. Combine the flour and salt in a mixing bowl and stir well. Add the vegetable oil and ½ cup water to the yeast mixture and pour it over the flour. Use your hands to mix the dough. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic - about 8 minutes. 4.Shape the dough into a ball and transfer to an oiled bowl. Cover with a wet towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk - about 1 hour. Remove the lamb sauce from the refrigerator and allow it to come up to room temperature. 5.Prepare the garlic sauce: combine the yogurt, parsley, crushed garlic and salt and pepper to taste. Stir well and set aside. 6.Punch the dough down, transfer it to a floured
work surface and cut the dough into 10 portions. Shape each portion into a round. Flatten each round with your hand and use a rolling pin to roll each piece into a 10-inch circle. The dough should be thin, like a crepe. Place the rounds on parchment paper.
7.Preheat an oven to 260 degrees C. 8.Stir the lamb sauce and then spoon it onto a
dough round. Spread it thinly to the edges and press down lightly so it sticks to the dough. Bake pizzas on parchment paper-lined baking sheets on the lowest oven rack until the edges are a light tan color - 8 to 10 minutes.
9.To assemble the lahmacun, drizzle with garlic sauce, top with shredded cabbage and roll up to eat.

Pistachio Baklava
Did you know that some of the world’s finest baklava comes from Turkey and not Greece like so many people believe? Yes, another sweet memory from my visit to Istanbul was of the night we went to Nusr-Et. The main meal was lush, but the dessert…. Fresh baklava, brought to the table by our friendly waiter, where he halved it, then filled it with ice cream, assembled it back together like a sandwich and drizzled it with chopped pistachio and syrup. It was like ART!!!
INGREDIENTS: l4 cups water l3 cups sugar lJuice of ½ lemon
For the Baklava: l36 leaves fresh or frozen packaged phyllo dough (14 x 18 inch size) l300 grams unsalted butter, clarified (Google ‘how to clarify butter’ if you’re not sure) l300 grams raw, hulled pistachio nuts, ground to a powder l2 tbsp sugar
9.When ready, remove the tray from the oven. While
it's still piping hot, immediately pour the cold syrup evenly over the baklava. Let it bubble up then settle. Generously sprinkle more ground pistachios over the top. Leave your baklava to cool down to room temperature before serving with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
You will need: l14 x 18 inch shallow metal baking pan lpastry brush lpastry cutter or sharp knife
METHOD: 1.Begin by making the syrup which you will pour
over the hot baklava later on. Combine the water, sugar and lemon juice in a small saucepan, bring the mixture to the boil and let it simmer slowly, uncovered, while you prepare the rest of the baklava. 2.Mix the ground pistachio nuts with 2 tablespoons of sugar. Brush the bottom of your baking pan with clarified butter and sprinkle a few pinches of the ground pistachio nuts over the butter. Take your first layer of thawed phyllo pastry and set it in place. Working quickly, brush the entire piece of phyllo with the butter. Repeat in the same manner with 18 leaves of phyllo. 3.Once you've buttered the 18th layer, use all of the ground pistachio mixture to make an even layer going all the way to the edges of the pan. 4.Place another layer of phyllo over the nuts and butter it. Repeat until you finish the last layer. If you have extra butter left, set it aside. 5.Using a sharp knife or a pastry cutter, gently cut the baklava into even squares or diamond shapes. If you're using a round pan, you can cut it into large, narrow slivers if you wish. I use a round pan and cut mine into even cake slices. 6.Drizzle the leftover butter over the top. Place the pan in a preheated 200° C oven and set the timer for 45 minutes. 7.Once the baklava is in the oven, remove the syrup from the heat and leave it to cool down. 8.Bake the baklava for about 45 minutes, or until the layers puff up high and the top layers are golden, crispy and translucent. LUTECE CHOCOLAT A BOX FULL OF SURPRISES Gill Sherry
I’m not the world’s greatest chocolate lover and certainly wouldn’t call myself a chocoholic. I don’t like chocolate icecream, I don’t drink hot chocolate and I could no sooner eat a death by chocolate dessert than I could bungee-jump from the top of Al Hamra Tower. That said, I am known to indulge in the odd truffle from time to time but it takes something very special in the chocolate stakes to impress me. Enter Lutece Chocolat - Handmade artisan chocolate with the finest quality of ingredient for your indulgence. It certainly sounds impressive and the quality packaging suggests something a bit more luxurious than your average box of chocolates from the supermarket. Before I go any further, I must admit I’m an old fashioned girl at heart, so I can’t help thinking that chocolates should be chocolate coloured i.e. dark brown, light brown or milky white. I therefore find myself biting back feelings of apprehension when I open the lid of this particular box to be faced with an assortment of bright blue, yellow, green and red. However, working on the theory that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, I dive in and sample a round Crispy Pomegranate. individual chocolate but also a title and a mouth-watering description. I’m pleasantly surprised by my first guilty indulgence and resist the temptation to immediately help myself to another. These chocolates clearly deserve to be savoured and consuming the 18 different treats in one go is surely not the way to do it. I know some people who wouldn’t think twice about devouring the entire box of 49 artisan delights but my willpower remains intact. Not for long. For my second choice, I bite the bullet and go for a Pistachio Truffle. It may be bright green but I’m a pistachio nut (pun intended) so I figure it’s a safe bet. I’m right. It’s delicious. In fact, I’d go as far as to say it’s exquisitely divine; a perfect combination of flavours and textures. I’m already scanning the menu for my next choice. Saffron Cardamon. The unique design of this bite-sized delicacy instantly grabs my attention and the taste is equal to the presentation. If my first three samples are anything to go by, I won’t just be eating the rest of the box, I’ll be eating the words from my opening line. Now I’ve recovered from the initial shock of alien coloured chocolates, I’m actually coming round to the idea that chocolate doesn’t have to be brown. Welcome to the 21st century I hear your cry! Other tempting menu choices include Blue Cherry, Watermelon, Salted Caramel, Rose Truffle, Cotton Candy, Hazelnut Caramel and Rahash. There’s certainly something to satisfy all tastes and cravings and regardless of your choice, you won’t be disappointed. Ramadan has been slightly challenging. I stay away from refined sugars and grains as much as possible and somehow still manage to lose weight. I have also incorporated three days of exercise per week to tone-up and enhance my weight loss. Banting and a good workout is indeed a lethal combination for that sought after Bikini Body. Now you can have it for life.
When people ask me about my dietary lifestyle and I explain it, most of them look at me in shock. “What, you eat FAT? Really? But how can you lose weight by eating fat?” But I do and I keep it off too. Fat is the body’s preferred fuel. Yes, you read that right. Fat is the body’s preferred fuel. Carbs are unnecessary. Cut it out and stick it to your forehead, your fridge or your wallet. Don’t get me wrong, most vegetables and fruit also contain carbs, but the good kind. We still need about 25-50 grams of carbs a day but this can be made up from green veggies and from the list of fruits allowed from the green list. Let’s Get Real… with Nat Oven Slow-Roasted Beef Brisket with Cauli-Mash & Sautéed Baby Spinach Ingredients:

Oven Slow-Roasted Beef Brisket
Oven Slow-Roasted Beef Brisket
1.5 kg whole Beef Brisket cut (ask at meat counter for it as it’s not usually displayed) Spice Rub: 1 tbsp honey 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1/3 cup olive oil 2 tbsp white vinegar 1 tsp mustard powder 1 tsp salt (I use Himalayan pink salt only) ½ tsp black pepper 1 tsp ground coriander
• Mix together all ingredients for rub, except for bay leaves and stock. • Place brisket into large oven dish and cover with spice rub. • Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. • Pre-heat oven to 200 degrees Celsius. • Cover the brisket tightly with heavy duty aluminum foil. • Cook for 1 hour, covered. • Remove from oven and add the stock and bay leaves. • Cover with foil again. • Reduce temperature to 160 degrees and slow roast for 3 hours or until the meat is fork tender.

Cauli-Mash
1 ½ cups beef stock
• Steam the cauliflower until it is mushy (never boil your veggies; this literally washes the nutrients away).
Cauli-Mash
• Using a stick blender or food processor, purée the cauliflower until smooth.
Head (1kg) cauliflower, broken into florets 300ml milk (I use lactose-free milk – be careful to add the milk slowly to get the consistency you want)
• Continue to purée, add the milk, then the butter and beat until smooth and silky. • Season to taste and serve.

Sautéed Baby Spinach 1 punnet Baby Spinach 1 small red onion - chopped 2 cloves garlic - minced 1 tbsp butter 1 tbsp olive oil
Sautéed Baby Spinach • Heat the olive oil and butter. • Sauté the red onion and garlic until onion is translucent. • If you opt to include broccoli and mushrooms, then add broccoli next and sauté for 3-5 minutes on low heat, add mushrooms and sauté until all moisture is absorbed (it’s ok if veggies are browned, it releases more flavor).
Salt and pepper
• Turn off heat and add baby spinach, toss through lightly and season to taste.
PS: For variety, I also add button mushrooms or broccoli florets sometimes.
• Assemble your dish and drizzle some of the left over gravy to add flavor - then enjoy to the max! July, 2015

65عام الى إمرأة ،ولست هنا ألبدئ رأيي بهذا التحول، انما ما أزعجني هو ما يتم تسويقه ونشره بهذا الخبر، فقد أكد المقال أن بعد التحول الشهير تم ارتفاع نسبة األرباح بـ 5أضعاف لهذا الشخص نظير تقديمه محاضرات (التنمية الذاتية ) ،أي أن محاضراته سترتفع أسعارها من 25ألف دوالر الى 100ألف دوالر!!! فأي تنمية ذاتية و أي تطوير نتوقعه من شخص تحول من رجل الى امرأة بعد 65سنة من حياته ،وما هي الرسالة التي سيتم توصيلها وتسويقها؟ ببساطة الهدف من كل هذا هو تسويق فكرة امكانية التحول الجنسي من ذكر الى انثى والعكس ،وأنه أمر طبيعي وسيتلقى الشخص الدعم لهذا العمل ،فالتسويق ال يعني فقط بتسويق المنتجات والخدمات بل حتى األفكار يمكن تسويقها ،والشخص الغير واعي لن يفرق بين الصح والخطأ وستختلط األمور ببعضها .في النهاية نحن المسؤولين فقط عن دعم األفكار وتسويقها ونجاحها من خالل متابعتنا ودعمنا لهذه األمور ،فانتبه لما تدعمه وتشجعه وتسوقه.

Stephen Reynolds T he family man joins a family business. After 27 years working for the same retail giant, Stephen Reynolds was ready for a change. Born in Scotland, raised in England, and having lived and worked in both Turkey and Hungary, he’s no stranger to moving around. So when the opportunity came to join The Sultan Center in Kuwait, he didn’t need asking twice. Stephen talks to us about his career, his family and his travels. Please introduce yourself to our readers. I’m Stephen Reynolds, Group Marketing Director for The Sultan Center.
Have you always worked in marketing? I originally joined Tesco (the grocery market leader in the UK) as a site researcher, identifying potential new sites for their superstores; but most of my Tesco career was in marketing.
How long have you lived in Kuwait? I moved to Kuwait from Turkey in May 2014. I’d been in Turkey for four years working for Tesco Kipa. Prior to that I was in Hungary for fourteen years. My wife is Hungarian; that’s where we met.

To succeed, we need to know what they are thinking and saying; not just about us, but about the competition too. Traditionally, marketing is just an advertising and communication function but we should be influencing the business around customer insight. Digital marketing is also important. We have employed a Digital Marketing Manager and we are re-designing our website and developing our social media channels. There is a lot of opportunity to do things.
Do you travel with your job? Sometimes. As well as Kuwait, our Retail business is based in four countries - Jordan, Oman, Lebanon and Bahrain. I’ve visited all of them.
Have you settled in to your new life? Absolutely. My wife and children have settled in too. My daughter is a keen horse rider and takes part in show jumping here in Kuwait. My sons both enjoy playing football so they’ve joined the Everton Academy and play three times a week. They’re happy at school too and enjoying integrating with the different cultures; I’m really proud of them. Plus, we have a great social life here.
What do you like most about living/working in Kuwait? I love the whole experience of exploring a different place and a different culture. I was pleasantly surprised when I first came here. The coastline really softens Kuwait geographically and we live by the sea, which is nice. Work wise, I was ready for something different. 27 years working for one company is a long time. I feel re-energized in Kuwait. It’s a family company and the working environment is different and varied. In the UK, things were very organized and highly governed with lots of meetings. It’s a very different structure here and I have more scope to think, to be more positive and try new things. It’s also more diverse. As well as retail and restaurants, we operate in IT, Trading, Property and Security. I get involved in all of them.
Is there anything specific you wish to achieve in your new role? Marketing is under-developed in the region. I’m trying to put the voice
Do you have a favourite holiday destination? I would probably say the area around Izmir in Turkey. I loved it when I lived there. It’s on the Aegean coast and it’s really beautiful. I enjoyed Sri Lanka too and would love to spend more time in Oman and Jordan having visited both for business. I hope to explore more places now I’m based in the Middle East. India and The Maldives perhaps.
What do you to relax? Most of my spare time is spent running around after the kids! I do play golf though and enjoy watching the boys play football. I’m a Manchester City fan so I like to watch the games on TV. I need to get back in the gym too!
What is your favourite restaurant in Kuwait? I love Wasabi for Japanese food and Prime & Toast is great for breakfast. Also, Pickles for burgers. I would say that though wouldn’t I?!

Reading this book felt like reliving history through the words of game changers that made a difference in the world; reliving war, peace, cries of freedom and righteous anger. The book has an introduction by British journalist, historian and award-winning author of popular history books, Simon Sebag- Montefiore. His best known titles include One Night in Winter (2013), Jerusalem, The Biography (2011) and Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar (2004). Famous quotes in the book include Jesus of Nazareth, Queen Elizabeth I, King Charles I, Mohandas K. Gandhi, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr and many more. A National Workshop on Gestational Diabetes organized by the Dasman Diabetes Institute, which was founded by Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health has called for more attention to be given to the problem of gestational diabetes in Kuwait. The workshop brought together over thirty clinical experts and research scientists in the area of diabetes, obstetrics, pediatrics and epidemiology to review the global evolution of gestational diabetes and its implications in Kuwait. The experts concluded that gestational diabetes is assuming epidemic proportions everywhere and they agreed that unless urgent action is taken to stem the problem in Kuwait much of the progress that has been previously achieved in the area of maternal and child health could be seriously set back by gestational diabetes. In Kuwait as many as 15% of all pregnancies are already being affected by gestational diabetes. This is a significantly higher proportion than in Europe or North America where gestational diabetes is also a problem. Gestational diabetes is a temporary condition that some women develop during pregnancy and which goes into remission after delivery. During the pregnancy, however, gestational diabetes affects the development of the fetus, can cause some malformation and make labor and delivery more complicated. Over the longer term, gestational diabetes can go on to place the mother at a higher than average risk of developing type 2 diabetes and it can also place the young child at greater risk of early onset of obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular illness. Fortunately, much can be done to prevent gestational diabetes by ensuring that pregnant women maintain normal body weight before pregnancy and eat a healthy diet and maintain regular exercise during their pregnancy. Even if the mother does develop gestational diabetes it can be very effectively managed if it is diagnosed early and followed by comprehensive antenatal care. Early diagnosis of gestational diabetes also gives time for the mother and the healthcare team to prepare for any possible complications at the time of labor and delivery. In view of the urgency and growing nature of the problem in Kuwait, the workshop participants called for a review and updating of Kuwait’s national policy and guidelines on gestational diabetes to incorporate newest scientific knowledge. They also called for more rigorous advocacy of the policy and guidelines so that all relevant healthcare staff involved in maternal and newborn healthcare are aware of them and adhere to them. Alghanim Industries, one of the region’s largest private companies, today announced a donation of KD30,000 (US$100,000) towards the setting up of a permanent rehabilitation centre in Saida, Lebanon, to assist in the treatment of people with drug addiction. The new center, which has been commissioned following a donation of KD330,000 (US$1.1 million) from the Arab Fund for Economic Development, will be run by the Lebanese Civil Council Against Addiction. It will be a base from which 123 addicts from different age groups and backgrounds, including a number of refugees from Syria, can embark on rehabilitation programmes to assist them away from their addiction. Kutayba Y. Alghanim, Chairman of Alghanim Industries, said: “In the Arab world where youth unemployment reaches 25%, drug addiction is a scourge which modern society cannot afford to ignore. It ruins the lives of the people who are addicted, and it affects the lives of families and loved ones. We need to give our young people the best chance possible to thrive and if they fall into the abyss of drug misuse and addiction we need to ensure that there is support to help them out. The donation is part of Alghanim Industries’ Corporate Social Responsibility programme which pays attention to the youth. It continues the longstanding close relationship of support and partnership between Kuwait and Lebanon on both government and business levels.
