PEOPLOEN’S S POFETR HE MONTH
Hello loyal City Pages readers,
My Dear friends and readers,
Every issue of CityPages to some degree comes with a theme, sometimes we go with global magazines special issues and sometimes we create our own! CityPages is mostly about lifestyle and talents around us in the region but this month the month of June, we focus more on the beauty industry and what's new in it. The industry we all agree is the booming industry more than anything else, it's the language of both male and Female. Everybody has the interest and the right to look his/her best, but the simpler the image the better always enhance your natural beauty and don't go with fake look. It's never a trend! In our June Beauty issue I would love to welcome our Beauty Guru Layla Al Aradi, the lady behind Layla Harmony - the biggest beauty center in the middle east! We are proud and honored to have her in our beautiful family and can't wait to follow her new segment "Make Up Call"! On the other hand we are welcoming in our CityPages magazine every talent, any new face loved by the camera, any new unique service or product you would like us to be highlighted for you and if you are a People's Person - the PR expert, email us your details and we will love to meet you here. At last I would love to thank everyone who has helped, supported and participated in our Special Beauty issue, we are being special and successful because of you all and our beautiful family.
Bye Bye May, June IS HERE, as indicated by the various temperature gauges all stuck at 40 (and above of course). What we chose to do with our summer hols is a completely personal experience, however with all the options open to us I’m sure just deciding on the itinerary will be fun. I have decided to take a couple of weeks off to visit my family in France and know I’ll be happy over the weather, a whiff of fresh air will definitely do me some good. This month’s Beauty and Fitness issue features the lovely Rana Al Omani who is a health and fitness buff, I interviewed her and must say she is one very determined young woman with a lot to give back. Instead of tooting her own horn, she very kindly went on to promote the various young Kuwaitis who are involved in fitness and clean eating, so we also decided to interview them for up-coming issues because we were left quite intrigued once she was done telling us about their activities. Gracing our cover is no other than the well known Layla Al Aradi, founder of Layla Harmony, the Hair and Beauty salon that became a well known brand name in Kuwait, read more on her journey to success inside. Last but not least, we introduce our new Blogger of the Month segment inaugurated by the beloved Ansam 518, Kuwait’s iconic blogger who started a brand new way to endorse whats new, comment on what’s up, and raise awareness on issues that matter to us on the social scene. I hope that the dust dies down and the sun shows up a bit more this month, for those who are sticking around K-Town. Anyone hopping on a plane to somewhere remember, lucky you because it’s a wide world and there’s so much beauty to see in the summertime no matter where we all end up. Till next month . . .
Love you all!

Kuwait’s youngest fast car racer, Photographer: Ahmed Emad
Zaid Ashkanani
Introduced to the sport by his father, Zaid was only 16 years old when he buckled up and launched himself into his new found passion, car racing. Now at 19, he talks about how he keeps safe and his future aspirations on the racetrack. Biography: The apple does not fall far away from the tree. That’s what happened when Zaid Ashkanani took his father’s passion of motor sport racing and turned it to his own. As a child, Zaid used to go to Bahrain very frequently with his father to watch him race in the Bahraini racetrack. It was then when he got fascinated with super cars. At the age of 16, he was sitting behind the wheels, when his father Abdulmajeed surprised Zaid by telling him, “Son, today you are driving!” Not only was Zaid a 16 year old when he first drove, but also the first car he drove was a Ferrari. Two years after, Zaid found himself racing in Bahrain, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, creating a thrill all over the Middle East with

his extravaganzas and lap times, which were relatively close to one’s who have been racing for a long time before Zaid. Today, at only 19 years old, Zaid Ashkanani is the youngest Kuwaiti Race driver in Kuwait. He is the youngest driver to ever get invited to participate in the ‘Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge of the Middle East.’ This competition had three different groups, where Zaid was in the third group. He came out in third place within his group and in sixth place from the total of the three groups, which consisted of 17 race drivers. Last week, Zaid came back from Jordan carrying a certificate from when he had attended a training course about Motor Sport Safety. This course highlighted safety on the racetrack and what to do in case of emergencies such as fires, losing control of vehicle, helmet protection, etc. Currently, Zaid Ashkanani is a Business major student at Kuwait University, hoping that someday he will become a businessman, like his father Abdulmajeed. He also wishes that someday Kuwait would have a racetrack circuit of its own to encourage others to pursue their passions of driving there, and hopefully have competitions as well. Zaid’s dream is to race in the Formula 1, carrying the Kuwaiti flag up high with pride.

“I always wanted to be a pilot, but ended up being a racer. Therefore, my creation will definitely be a car, which could transform into a plane. Now, for here in Kuwait, my robot should be able to transform into a jet ski and a motorbike as well! Kuwaiti streets have been saturated with cars lately, and numbers have been increasing dramatically throughout the years. Keeping my personal interest aside, I would definitely make sure my robotic creation is used to ‘protect and to serve’ the people of Kuwait. When people are in need of help or are facing grave danger, and the police force, the ambulance, or the fire trucks are not able to get there on time because of traffic, I will be ready to push that button, transform, and fly to the rescue! As for my personal use and interest, I don’t think I’ll be booking any flights on planes anymore. We'll be flying around the continents, cruising on the waters of the seven seas, and surely racing in the circuits of the world! My message to all the people out there who enjoy racing, buckle up! As safety should always, Come First! June 2013

A Light in the Heart My article today was inspired by Khalil Gibran’s famous quote “beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart”. Many of us, especially women become at times so caught up in our beauty, style and appearance. I will definitely not preach to you today about how frivolous all of that is because lets admit it, some times its fun to indulge our selves, and hey there is nothing wrong with making sure you look your best. My concern is that in our haste to do that, we over look the important stuff and loose sight of what really matters. So what am I trying to get to here? Well, who ever said that beauty is only skin deep got it all wrong. Our beauty shines way stronger and deeper than that; you can be flawless on the outside but if there is nothing on the inside to sustain that beauty then it is all for naught. Here are some “inner beauty” treatments that you can try at home! So today after your daily routine of wash, tone and moisturize, you can add these to your list too! 1.Don't worry be happy: As cliché as this might sound, this is actually very true. Even if you do not feel it at first, smiling and being happy are habit-forming. When you smile and act happy, eventually you cannot stop. It becomes like a song that gets stuck in your head. When you smile and act happy, you attract positive energy, which in turn increases your inner beauty. The energy even extends to the people around you. 2.Do something kind to someone other than your self: Every day you probably meet people who are in need or struggling. Sometimes it is easier to ignore others and go on with our business. Next time you see someone in need try to reach out to that person. An act of kindness nourishes not only your spirit, but also the person your helping out. Think of the tea boy who brings you your morning drink every day, can you do something that will make his day a little brighter? Or may be you can donate some of the toys your kids have outgrown to a hospital nearby? The possibilities are endless and so is your creativity.
Before I leave you this month, here is some food for thought: “ For Attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run their fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.” ~ Sam Levenson
3.Do something you love: Think of something positive that you absolutely love and enjoy doing. It might be travelling, cooking a gourmet dinner to your friends or fishing! Usually when we absolutely love an activity, it’s because it fulfills some need in our spiritual journey. The enjoyment comes from the deep and lasting satisfaction of participating in the activity—fishing may have spiritual meaning to you because it gives you time to spend with your family or friends, or because it allows you to be one with nature. Traveling may be part of a deeper need you have to learn about and understand the world. Cooking and entertaining might stem from your need to celebrate the unique connections you have with your friends, to nurture them and make them happy. Getting too busy or lazy to indulge in your passions robs you of spiritual fulfillment and growth. You need to follow your bliss so go on ad indulge your self. Next time your thinking of your beauty do not neglect your inner beauty of your precious thoughts too. Embrace and love your self just the way you are, celebrate your beauty and that of others; support those around you in their struggles and quests and know that there is enough beauty and abundance in the world to share with every one! A Doula
The Essential Birth Companion What is Doula? In the 1970’s, a doctor studying birth in South America stumbled across a significant phenomenon: women who had a female companion with them continuously during birth, labored for a shorter amount of time and had better outcomes than mothers who labored without companionship. He and his research team called these birth companions Doulas - a word with Greek origins, but which has now come to mean a female birth companion. Today, Doulas have become a popular and essential member of a mother’s birth team. Doulas are not midwives, but they do provide non-medical care for the mother continuously throughout labor and immediately after birth. A Doula: • Recognizes birth as a significant life experience. • Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a laboring woman. • Provides continuous support, practical comfort measures, and an objective viewpoint to aid in decision-making. • Complements the care provided by the woman's partner and birth attendants. • Protects and nurtures the memory of the birth experience. Recent studies indicate the use of a doula: • Decreases labor length by 25 percent. • Decreases oxytocin use by 25 percent. • Decreases mother's request for pain medication by 30 percent. • Decreases cesareans by 50 percent. • Increases father's participation level. Here in Kuwait, birthing families and care-givers are welcoming doulas as the newest member of today's maternity care team. The first ever BirthKuwait DONA Doula Training Workshop was held in conjunction with Royle Hayat Hospital April 2012. There are now over 20 Doulas trained in Kuwait. (DONA is the largest international Doula training organization and is based out of the USA. See www. DONA.org for more info about Doula training.) “Having a Doula was by far the best decision in making my natural birth a reality,” says Addie Parker, www.citypageskuwait.com
a recently new mother who hired a Doula for her birth.“I was in labor for over 24 hours. I cannot express how essential it was to have my Doula by my side during this time. She kept me grounded and focused during every contraction. She provided words of encouragement, kept me hydrated (avoiding an IV at the hospital), and kept me breathing which provided crucial oxygen to my baby. It was also great having her present because she was able to direct my husband so he could be involved with the labor, by suggesting tasks for him like rubbing my back while I was in the bathtub. This was a wonderful way for him to be a part of the experience and feel of use. Overall, I can honestly say I don’t think I could have successfully birthed all-naturally without the support, guidance, and compassion of a doula.” Doulas aren’t just for moms who want to have a natural birth. Doulas provide critical support to all moms, no matter how they end up birthing. “I don’t know what we would have done without our Doula,” said one mother who had a Doula for her planned cesarean birth. “After the birth I was sleepy and groggy. For the first day, I was too sleepy from pain medication to sit up, but our Doula showed my husband how to help our baby latch on. After our Doula left, it was my husband explaining to me and the staff how the baby should latch on when breastfeeding! Without her, I’m not sure we would have been successful with breastfeeding.” Ultimately, you can’t control everything that happens during your labor and birth. But you can labor with confidence having a knowledgeable, experienced, and compassionate Doula by your side.Hire a Doula today! It will be the best decision you make for your birth! When you look for a Doula in Kuwait, go to the ultimate source of Birthing information: www.BirthKuwait.com or send an email to info@birthkuwait.com.

A Date with Destiny The power of a well constructed letter... Michelle @ Kabwata Cultural Village Lusaka, Zambia
Michelle Michelle and Ms. Sombo
Michelle with Aquila Models at NOMADS Lodge Lusaka, Zambia
A single letter that had landed in my in box on Facebook was about to be the start of an adventure and experience that could perhaps change, inspire and touch lives. I tossed the perfectly structured letter between my fingers and smiled. My spirit of adventure had been rekindled. No! I would not just correspond by email and perhaps the odd phone call; I would go to Zambia and meet Ms. Sombo Maseka CEO Partner of Aquila Modelling. I had read the company's profile; the letter had opened up possibilities and perhaps opportunities for both Iszonica Modelling School and Aquila Modelling. I already had in mind how I wanted to help. It was a new agency just starting out and in the letter; Mr. Nawa Sibongo CEO Partner of Aquila Modelling had requested my expertise, advice and knowledge of the modelling and fashion industry. I felt honoured that my company had been seen and thought worthy of asking for help and advice.
Ms. Sombo CEO of Aquila Modelling
Michelle with Aquila Models at NOMADS Lodge Lusaka, Zambia
sponsor a model from Zambia to come to Kuwait and feature in Iszonica’s Annual fashion event which takes place every November at Holiday Inn Hotel in Salmiya and sponsor one model from Iszonica to accompany me to Zambia and help train and organise a fashion event. The money raised would go to Aquila Modelling and help in their campaign to send children from low income families to school. As a teacher myself, education is very important to me and the possibility to be in a position to help in this way increased my desire to go.
On the 31st March 2013 I boarded the plan from Kuwait airport and flew to Lusaka, Zambia. Today two doors have been opened, two people in two countries are talking and two businesses are working together because ONE person turned his thought to reality and the reality has opened the I smiled; I wanted to go to Zambia and see how I could help Aquila Modelling, my intention was to perhaps door to many possibilities. www.citypageskuwait.com

FACE BLINDNESS OR
PROSOPAGNOSIA
Most of us take for granted that we can instantly recognize people we know by looking at their faces. It's so automatic, it almost sounds silly to even say it. But imagine for a second what life would be like if you could not, your wife or husband looked like a stranger; if you couldn't recognize yourself in a mirror; or you couldn't tell your kids apart. Well that's what life is like for people who suffer from a neurological condition called face blindness, or prosopagnosia, that can make it nearly impossible to recognize or identify faces. they have never recognized faces normally so their impairment is not apparent to them until well into adulthood.
What is Prosopagnosia? The term prosopagnosia came from Greek words "prosopon" - face, "agnosia - not knowing, also called Face Blindness. Prosopagnosia is a neurological disorder characterized by the inability to recognize faces. Depending upon the degree of impairment, some people with prosopagnosia may only have difficulty recognizing a familiar face; others will be unable to discriminate between unknown faces, while still others may not even be able to distinguish a face as being different from an object. Some people with the disorder are unable to recognize their own face. Types of Prosopagnosia There are two types of prosopagnosia: acquired and congenital (developmental).
www.citypageskuwait.com
Acquired Prosopagnosia This type of Prosopagnosia occur due to brain damage suffered after maturity from head trauma, stroke or other degenerative diseases of brain. These individuals had normal face recognition abilities that were then impaired. Most prosopagnosics learn to cope early on. They distinguish people based on cues like hairstyle, voice, gait or body shape. They avoid places where they could unexpectedly run into someone they know. They pretend to be lost in thought while walking down the street. They act friendly to everyone--or to no one. In short, they become expert at masking their dysfunction Congenital Prosopagnosia Children with congenital prosopagnosia are born with the disability and have never had a time when they could recognize faces. Individuals with congenital prosopagnosia often do not realize their disability as
Symptoms Everyone sometimes has trouble recognizing faces, and it is even more common for people to have trouble remembering other people's names. Prosopagnosia is much more severe than these everyday problems that everyone experiences. Prosopagnosics often have difficulty recognizing people that they have encountered many times. In extreme cases, prosopagnosics have trouble recognizing even those people that they spend the most time with such as their spouses and their children. One of the telltale signs of prosopagnosia is great reliance on non-facial information such as hair, gait, clothing, voice, and other information. Prosopagnosics also sometimes have difficulty imagining the facial appearance of acquaintances. One of the most common complaints of prosopagnosics is that they have trouble following the plot of television shows and movies, because they cannot keep track of the identity of the characters. Treatment In acquired prosopagnosia, chance of complete recovery usually depends upon the size and location of the damage e.g. small and confined to the right side of the brain. But for people whose prosopagnosia does not go away on its own, there is no real treatment. However, there are lifestyle changes that can help people to cope. Patient should be trained to recognize persons by the mean of others cues such as the voice, clothing, or distinctive features .Another helpful thing is to right down list of who you expect to see. Therefore, when you see someone you already have ideas about who they could be. All people with prosopagnosia are not alike. They are as different as can be. Their only similarity is their face-blindness.

The Eyes Have It! The eyes are known as the window to the soul. Unfortunately they are one of the first areas to show signs of aging. Botox, laser resurfacing and fillers can dramatically improve the aging appearance of the eye and keep patients looking youthful for many years. The increase loosening of skin, however, and fat deposits can be more difficult to treat as patients age. In many cases, surgery is the best option. Eye lid surgery is very common among both men and women. It is most often done for cosmetic reasons, however, many patients can have extreme eye lid Ptosis or drooping of an upper eyelid of one or both eyes. The droop may be barely noticeable, or the lid can descend over the entire pupil. In these extreme cases vision can be obstructed and the eye may be very difficult to open fully. Eye lid surgery can improve your vision in these cases, providing a less obstructed field of view, once droopy eyelids are improved.
under the eyes need to be addressed as well, removing excess skin or fat if needed.
Eye lid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic or functional surgical procedure that removes excess skin by excision, or occasionally, laser resurfacing. In the case of excess fat, it may also be removed. It is important not to remove excessive amounts of fat to avoid a hollowing appearance as the patient grows older.
For what is considered a fairly minor surgery, major change and extreme results can be obtained with a small procedure. Improving the skin of the eyes can take years off your appearance. Blepharoplasty surgery can last up to ten years, but may need to be repeated as the aging process continues.
Eyelid surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and generally takes anywhere from one to two hours. No pain is felt as a local anesthetic and sedatives are administered. There is no need to stay in the hospital overnight. The location of the incisions is chosen carefully so that the resulting scar will be as hidden as possible. To correct the upper eyelids, an incision is typically made in the natural creases of the eye. For the lower eyelids, an incision is typically made just underneath the lashes or inside the lower eyelid. Both areas of the scars should heal into a thin and fine line, making it almost impossible to detect. Bruising and swelling will appear and generally lasts from 5 – 7 days. Patients can return to work usually after 5 – 7 days as well.
When combined with other non surgical procedures such as Botox and laser resurfacing, results can be dramatic.
Most commonly, patients come for consultation complaining of loose or sagging upper eyelids and a general aged appearance of their eyes. Loose skin of the upper eyelid must be removed and often bags

Dr. Mohammad Abdelazeem A found passion, a Dermatologist by calling His passion to enhance people’s beauty and insatiable curiosity to solve their skin care problems has led Mohammad Abdelazeem to get a Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate, and become a top dermatologist. He now shares his trajectory, along with some great tips to keep your skin safe and clean this summer.
Please introduce yourself to our readers? My name is Mohammad Abdelazeem, I’m a doctor and 34 years of age. I was born in Egypt and raised in the KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia). I lived and worked as a Dermatology doctor in Egypt then Switzerland. Now, I am working at a high class specialized private clinic here in Kuwait. I am a reader and a traveler. I love traveling to see and experience the beauty of the world that Allah has given us, maybe that’s what inspires me to be a great dermatologist, to enhance the beauty that our God has made. Tell us something about your education? I finished my school education in an exclusive institution in KSA and completed my medical school at Ain Shams University in Egypt. After that, I finished my specialty studies in dermatology. Then, I started working in the dermatology department at the Bern University Hospital in Switzerland, and that was the time I achieved my doctorate degree. Why did you decide to become a dermatologist? “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” Since I was a kid, skin and beauty issues were always attracting my attention. Being a dermatologist was not a matter of chance, it was something I had always dreamed of and by God’s will I attained it. From the beauty and skin side all people like to have healthy skin and care about beauty because it makes the person, regardless of gender, increase their selfesteem. What are the three most common skin diseases that are common in Kuwait or those you face on regular basis? The pattern of skin diseases is different from one country to another. This pattern is a mirror of the level of urbanization of the countries. When I conducted a research study before regarding comparison of skin diseases in European, Arabic, African and Asian countries, I noticed that the distribution of dermatological diseases in Kuwait are reflecting a highly modernized community and also the effect of the burning sun. Acne Vulgaris, Atopic Dermatitis and Skin hyperpigmentation are the most common skin problems. Therefore, I usually advise my patients to be precautious while going outside and generally take good care of their skin. What does cosmetic mean in the Dermatology field? Dermatology is the science that deals with skin and its diseases. It has different www.citypageskuwait.com
branches, one of which is aesthetic medicine. This area emphasizes on the practice in medicine for, “Looking Good.” In this field, dermatologists use their beauty weapons to achieve the desired results for them and the patient. The goal of aesthetic medicine is to improve the physical appearance of the clientele, fitting their expectations with the cosmetic procedures’ results and building up their confidence. What services or techniques do you offer at your clinic? Our clinic is an ambulatory clinic that cater men and women for their cosmetic and dermatological needs such as: 1. Body Contouring And Body Sculpting 2. Anti Aging Treatments Including Varieties Of Recent Remedies. 3. Facial Revitalization And Skin Care Rejuvenation 4. Hair Loss Treatment And Hair Transplant 5. Laser Hair Removal 6. Treatment Of Dark Spots (Hyperpigmentation) 7. Treatment Of Excessive Sweating 8. Treatment Of All Types Of Acne 9. Treatment Of Scars, Keloids And Burns 10. Treatment Of Cellulite And Stretch Marks 11. Non Surgical Nose Augmentation 12. Treatment Of All Nail And Hair Diseases 13. Treatment Of Skin And Venereal Diseases Tell us about your personal and professional achievements or awards? Thanks God, I received a lot of awards and certificates from different countries. However, my main achievements in my life are my doctorate from the Bern University, and my Master and Bachelor degrees from Ain Shams University. Do you serve to male clients also? What is the most common problem among male patients? Our clinic renders care for both men and women. As I said earlier, we are conducting anti hair loss treatments. According to my experience, most men

who are attending our clinic are complaining from hair problems, mostly androgenic alopecia. We are treating this with the different and latest methods, such as hair transplant. As summer is approaching, what special instructions would you suggest our readers on how to protect their skins? In summer, we are expecting high temperatures and dry pricking heat, which damages our skin components. My advice for all City Pages Magazine readers, regardless whether they are male or female, young or old, is to protect their skin simply from the sun by following these steps. • Hydrate your skin by drinking plenty of water and eating fresh fruits before going outside the sun. • Apply sunscreen with at least SPF30 with UVA/UVB, 30 minutes before sun exposure and then every 2 hours after. • Avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible during peak UV radiation hours, between 10AM – 3PM. • Wear sunglasses with UV protection to protect your eyes and wear wide brimmed hats, light color long sleeves shirts and pants for your skin. • Eat a good and balance diet, rich in fibers and vitamins, which help eliminate toxic waste from the skin. • Avoid smoking and get enough sleep, which eliminates free radicals and toxins from your body. • Practice proper hygiene, wash your face and body with suitable cleansing, especially before going to bed to remove impurities and apply appropriate moisturizer.
the field of Dermatology? Being in the field of medicine “dermatology,” I always keep myself updated with the recent diagnostics and treatments techniques of all skin diseases. Firstly, I’m sharing some studies in Switzerland at the Bern University in cooperation with professors there. In addition to that, I’m attending and sharing some international dermatology, anti- aging and laser conferences and seminars. Moreover, it’s been my hobby collecting and reading books. I spent most of my leisure time reading books and surfing the Internet. I believe that continuous learning will improve my knowledge and skills so that we can give a high quality treatment to our patients. How do you unwind yourself from your busy work schedule? When I was a child I always dream of becoming a TV announcer, Allah fulfilled my dream by working in different networks as a TV announcer in a lot of medical programs, this is one of my main hobbies and past time. I also like to travel to discover and learn about different cultures. On the daily basis, I am reading the Qur’an and doing some physical exercises.

Should children wear glasses?
Many parents seem to debate whether a child should wear glasses or not.If there is a medical need, then yes it is necessary to wear glasses. If fact, wearing glasses at an early age can prevent future vision problems for any individual. Visual development begins from birth. Babies learn to focus and color vision begins to develop by fourth month. At around six months, babies learn eye hand coordination. Depth perception and face recognition are attitude by the age of two.Your child’s eyes continue to develop through childhood. With the start of puberty, the visual development has concluded. It is important to check your child’s eyes from birth. The Pediatrician will do the necessary investigations at birth, but you have to visit an Ophthalmologist for your child’s regular eye check up’s later.Thankfully, many children’s vision problems are detected during their regular check up with the General Practitioner or Pediatrician and also during school vision screening exams.however, there are also signs that can hint that your child may be in need of a pair of glasses. Have you noticed that your child squints to try to seepeople or distant objects clearly. does your child sit relatively close to the distant objects clearly? Does your child sit relatively close to the television? Have you noticed that your child covers one eye up to read or watch T.V? Does your child rub his/her eyes a lot? Has your child been suffering from headaches lately? Is he/she having problems in concentraing at school? If your answer is yes to most of these questions, then it would be advisable to take your child to an eye doctor. In addition, if there is a history of eyeglass wearers in the family, it should be a natural move to verify whether your child needs spectacles. There are many reasons why a child needs to wear glasses, it can be due to preventing amblyopic, a squint, correcting a refractive error to improve distant/near vision or even just to protect their eyes from the new electronic gadgets used in this in this digital age. With the help of your eye doctor, you will understand why your child needs glasses and their importance of it. Should your child need glasses and the importance of it. Should your child need glasses, the doctor will provide a prescription which you will show your trusted optician. Go to an optician, who has experience in dispensing glasses for the young. The choice of frame is very important. There are many factors to take into consideration, apart from the look alone. The experienced optical consultant will be able to assist you in choosing the right frame and spectacle lenses to suit your child’s needs. Having to wear glasses at an early age is not a problem and should not make parents too worried about it. What is important is to follow the instructions given by the professionals in eye care.

Hip healthy food that’ll leave you shredded all year round Hollywood like. What’s Hollywood however, is his menu selection at Healthylicious. The concept behind Zee’s eatery is healthy food in a gourmet fashion. “The perception of eating healthy and diet food here is that it’s too bland. People think you need to eat bland-blah food to be healthy which is certainly not the case,” says Zee. Perusing the menu at Healthylicious, I was quite amazed to find that most of the meals come with a PCF (protein, carbs and fat) rating and calorie count. Heathylicious features 10 varieties of burgers, 20 types of protein shakes as well as a cornucopia of Japanese food items and low fat desserts. And that’s not even half of the menu selection! What’s interesting to note here is that, Zee, seems
“With great power comes great responsibility.” These wise words uttered by Spiderman’s uncle, Uncle Ben, echoes in my head as I now sit and watch with utter fascination at the social chaos around me. I’m at an eatery with my lunch date awaiting my plate of food (what’s new?) and I can’t help but be amused at my social findings. It feels as though I’m being put under a microscope as patrons glance at us from time to time but at this very moment, my lunch date is more concerned at the macros and ingredients of his Skittles Protein Shake. Yes you heard right, his Skittles Protein Shake. Healthy but in a smart-arse kinda way perhaps? Meet Zee “Shredded Diesel.” This 29-year old has many accolades to his name. As we sit in his little quaint black and fuchsia-themed diner located off Bahrain St in Salmiya, it’s hard to imagine this Kuwaiti-native has trained the likes of international artists and superstars such as Timberland and Leonardo DiCaprio, been featured on magazines such as UK Men’s Health and IronMan Magazine and currently is a sponsored-athlete of LA Muscle (a supplement brand that’s huge in the United States, United Kingdom and Europe). to go to great lengths to source his ingredients. As a foodie and a personal trainer myself, I noticed that he doesn’t seem to use processed ingredients which explains why his food dishes are tasty and a hit with his restaurant patrons. Take for example his Tropical Soul burger which is pure lean Angus beef. The tenderloin is ground into patties; grilled and is nestled on a fresh oat flour bun and features fresh pineapple slices and an orange zest sauce. It’s impressive to know that the restaurant uses low sodium salt in their dishes. Furthermore all the sauces are hand-made, sugar-free and are low in calories. My personal favourite whenever I eat here is the grilled menu selection. I like it because you can order specifically, the amount of food items you’d like. My staple dish is usually 150g tenderloin steak with 250g of their delicious spinach salad and 100g baked sweet potato chips. Hence if you’re on a strict nutrition plan like I am or if you’re simply wanting to eat healthy, you know exactly what your food intake is like. When I first visited Healthylicious, my initial thought was that this diner would be filled predominantly with bodybuilders cause hey, it’s the only eatery which actively lists the macros of your food. However it’s great to see men, women, athletes and even children-alike eating and really enjoying their meal. “Childhood obesity levels here in Kuwait are through the roof. A lot of these fast food establishments push toys to get kids addicted on the junk food hype. The challenge we faced and overcame at Healthylicious was learning how to make healthy food taste good and as a result, I’m happy of its appeal to everyone; young and old.” A fitness model with a moral conscience. I’m impressed. Though not as impressed as some of the out-there food items on his menu. From their protein shake selection, there’s the Squat Til You Drop Protein Smoothie, The Hulk or One More Rep to name a few. If you’re even feeling a bit adventurous, you can try one of the shakes from their DrJeckyl & Hyde selection; my favourite being their chocolate chicken protein shake. Yes you heard right... Chicken in my chocolate protein shake #shenohatha. But hey, don’t knock it til you try it. Healthylicious is definitely one healthy eatery that sets itself apart from other health food establishments simply because it defies all perceptions and rigid connotations of what healthy food should be. It’s fit food in a hip kinda way which showcases Zee’s trademark of cheekiness in every one of his dishes. If you don’t believe me, rock on up to the joint, get a protein shake and throw in a serve of Skittles (or chicken if you’re feeling a bit brave today). Healthylicious is located in Salmiya, Block 6, Bahrain St, Shop 19. Operating hours are Sun-Sat 12noon to 1am. Phone 50660017. Maha Al-Rashed, helping people reach a pain free lifestyle Having tried different methods to get rid off her back pain, Maha Al-Rashed found the solution to her pain and her professional calling. Her curiosity to figure out what was wrong with her back pain lead her to become a certified Corrective Posture Coach. Who is Maha Al-Rashed and how did you get interested in Corrective Posture?
Can you tell us about a difficult case you dealt with, and how you were able to help the person?
Me, I’m just a regular person that was having back pain, like everyone else, only I decided to figure out what was wrong. So, I started by trying out yoga, thinking I had issues with flexibility, and then a friend told me about a CHEK practitioner at the gym I go to. I booked an appointment and watched as my life started to change! It then clicked, you know, like one of those light bulb moments; I knew that this is my way to help make a difference in the world.
I believe that the most difficult case you will ever deal with is yourself. A commitment is required by both parties, the practitioner and the client. Realizing that I am gluten intolerant for example, has pushed me to focus on a gluten free diet, and though it is tempting to devour that piece of cake, you reach a point where you are aware of your body and the consequences of having that piece of cake.
How long did it take you to become certified and what did that entail? There are several levels of certification. The CHEK institute prides itself on focusing on a holistic approach to healing the body. There are two branches to the education process, the first being the Practitioner branch, which focuses mostly on corrective exercise and correcting the posture; the second being the Holistic Lifestyle coaching that focuses more on the emotional and nutritional part. These work hand in hand and it is recommended that to be a good practitioner, that you do at least one of each. I had taken the Holistic approach to a fully functional gut class with Emma Lane, who taught me a large amount of information on the human body and its reaction to foods. Six months later I began with my journey to become an exercise coach. That process entails me taking three pre-requisite correspondence courses including Scientific Core Conditioning, Scientific Back Training and finally Program Design. Only once you pass the three pre-requisite exams will you qualify to take the exercise coach course, and only after you pass the exam will you then be considered a CHEK Exercise Coach.
Before being certified, what was your previous knowledge in this area? I really didn’t know much about the Holistic Lifestyle, but I did follow my practitioner’s instructions and watched as my life began to change.
What are the differences in being an Exercise Coach? I believe that an exercise coach, or CHEK Practitioner’s approach to exercise is completely different to everyone else’s. An Exercise Coach, designs a program tailored for the client’s individual needs, not just the latest trend in the exercise world. We also look at the client’s lifestyle and career requirements while creating their program.
www.citypageskuwait.com
What kind of correcting posture exercises do you do with people? Each exercise program is customized to the client’s needs, depending on the client and their training age. We use exercises that challenge the client’s bio-motor abilities, for example strength, flexibility, coordination and balance. We don’t just put them on a piece of machinery that requires minimal use of bio-motor abilities.
How can people know they would benefit from your experience as an Exercise Coach? Seeing is believing. I am not selling you a miracle drug that will help you lose weight, or correct your posture, what I do is I work with you and coach you through the journey so that you begin to reap the benefits of our journey as soon as you start implementing our plan, a plan that we set together.
Describe to us what exactly you do and why it is important to be certified in this? The process of corrective exercise begins with a postural assessment, specific and exact measurements are taken of your thoracic and lumbar spine; your pelvic tilt is also looked at as well as your posture as a whole. Once that process is complete, the client’s goals are set. Then and only then will we begin with the corrective exercise and any other exercises that will help the client reach their goals. We also check the physiological stress load of the client, as we do not want to add to that load with too much exercise. Exercise can be a great de-stressor, but for someone with a highly stressful lifestyle, exercise could push them over the edge.
Now that you are certified, what’s next on your professional path? I hope to complete the education process and proceed with my education at the CHEK Institute. My journey has just begun, but the 6 years I’ll be spending studying at the CHEK Institute will help me help more people.
{Interview}
41
Is there anything else you feel it’s important for people to know about you or the job you do? As CHEK Practitioners, we take what we do very seriously. Some people find that our approach is slow and a bit time consuming, but we do achieve results. Going on a diet and losing weight in 2 weeks is great, but once you’re off the diet you go back to gaining weight. What we do, we work slowly and make your results last. But, you need to commit and continue on your own. I would like the readers to know that through my experience with a dysfunctional core, a lot of damage can be done to the back and posture if not corrected. My focus will mainly be in the correction of the cores of prenatal and postnatal mothers. Also, some postural issues can be avoided if the focus is put on infant development, which I have seen through watching children in sports and how something as simple as putting them in a baby walker too early can affect their gait pattern, which could lead to orthopedic injuries later in life.
Photographer: Nour Anwar AlHarbi
Also, we as practitioners embrace different approaches to healing. We work closely with other fields, like Chiropractors, Personal Trainers, Doctors, Osteopaths, and Physical Therapists. So, we are not here to replace all the traditional forms of medicine, but we are here to help and work hand in hand with them to help our clients reach their ultimate goal of living pain free.

Please introduce yourself to our readers: My name is Samer Al-Khatib, I am the Regional Product and Supply Chain Manager for Alsayer Franchising Co. I have lived in Kuwait for 6+ years and have worked with brands such as Starbucks, Le Pain Quotidian, and AlShaya Casual dining division, Zalatimo Sweets Co., Brinker, Clyde’s and several other leading F&B brands. This is my first position as Supply Chain and logistics but I enjoy the challenges. My background is mainly Operations, which gives me the right insight to knowing what our customers really want. I am a US citizen of Palestinian origin and have lived in the US for more than 22 years. Other than the US, I have lived in Jordan, Lebanon, Dubai, and now in Kuwait.
What does your current role as the Regional Manager - Product and Supply Chain Manager at Caribou Coffee entail?
Photographer: Abdulazia AlSoraya
Lots of tastings‌ I am the envy of all my friends and colleagues, until they find out that I am always on a diet to offset all of the product development and new product tastings I need to have. My department (which covers all of UAE, Kuwait and now Turkey) also manages all local and international purchases, product development, local food and bakery development, furniture, equipment, supplier negotiations, and most important is the quality control and quality assurance. We also manage all of the logistics that is required to get everything you see in Caribou stores to the right place in the right amount of time to be able to serve our growing number of customers on a daily basis. Last I checked we are serving nearly 20,000 customers per day in all of our markets. Those are a lot of thirsty and hungry mouths to feed, and we need to keep them all coming back for more with our F&B innovations. I am very thankful and honored to have such an amazing team; really they are a unique and diverse group. They are the true unsung heroes June 2013

behind the magic that makes Caribou a success. To my team who are constantly under pressure to achieve excellence… You are truly amazing. Thank you!!!
What are the main supply chain challenges that you face on a daily basis? 1. Quality — At AlSayer Franchising, our priority is to give our guests the quality they deserve and expect from Caribou Coffee. I often face issues from some suppliers that do not meet our quality standard and this sometimes limits whom we deal with, and how we manage our suppliers. I have found that “Being Picky” is the only way to truly guarantee that we deliver on our quality promise to our guests. “Being Picky” has become somewhat of a culture at Caribou; it is a reminder that we always need to strive for excellence. We as a company gladly take and practice this mindset to all of our brands at AlSayer. I am even known in the business as “Mr. Picky” because some of my e-mail signatures are “Be Picky.” I even give out an award, at the end of the year during our team’s party; we call it the “Picky Award.” Only one person/market can get this award, it keeps everyone eager to make a difference, which shows the teams passion to make sure our guests get only the best. 2. Respecting timings — Logistics, meetings, deadlines, we only have 24 hrs in a day and if we do not respect time, then things become very slow and everybody loses interest and usually kills whatever project we are working on. Moving too fast is just as bad, we need to make sure the proper foundations are laid so we can give our business the strength it needs in order to grow the right way.
How did you come with the idea of the new Blended Cupcake Snowdrift? This is a funny story. My daughter, who loves the kitchen as much as I do, and I were in the kitchen at home on the weekend making something cold to drink. This was about a year ago. We were putting melted chocolate, milk, ice cream and anything we could find into the blender. My son walks in and says, “Make me one,” and he then looked into the fridge and saw a chocolate cupcake from a birthday party he was at the day before and said, “Here, put this in mine.” My daughter and I then added milk and vanilla ice cream, and that was the inception of the www.citypageskuwait.com
first blended cupcake. Of course later I sat with a good friend from “The Cheesecake Factory” Philip, who was visiting the UAE and we threw around a few ideas including the idea of putting a Red Velvet cupcake into one of our Snowdrifts. It tasted amazing. We then tweaked the recipe till it was perfect and created the recipe for Caribou’s standard.
Is this your first time to introduce a new drink at Caribou or have you introduced other drinks earlier? We have played around with some beverage combinations in the past, none of which came to be, but you have to understand that we are a franchise business. For most large franchise concepts the idea of stepping outside of the standard box is a big nono, but our partners at Caribou Coffee Co. US are always supportive of our needs to develop new and unique products for our customers. Their flexibility in this beverage really allowed us to spread our wings and break the glass ceiling for local innovation.
What is the procedure at Caribou Coffee before launching a new drink? Our process is a long one to be honest, and in most cases it needs to be. We want to make sure we are
only launching products that are unique and targeting our guest’s taste profile. It is a rigorous process of testing and tasting and mixing and measuring. It is a messy, fattening process, but someone has to do it, right? I have to thank our training team for their role in creating this drink. They really are the key to creating this consistently tasty drink every time.
How sure were you that the Blended Cupcake Snowdrift would be successful? I had no doubt in my mind, not because it was my baby, but because it has a well-balanced flavor, it is light and refreshing. It looks great, tastes even better, and fits the criteria for any product to be a huge success. Our marketing team was also extremely supportive in promoting this drink, they went all out: cinema, radio, and massive social media coverage step by step during the initial launch. Our teams in the stores also are doing an excellent job in promoting this beverage, they are extremely happy to be launching this kind of innovative product and feel very passionately about offering it to the guests, because they believe in the product and the potential of this product. It is an easy sell for them, “Blended Cupcake!” What’s not to love? It’s fun, different, makes people curious when they hear the name. Most people try it because it is an unusual combination, and when they taste it they keep coming back for more.
45
How has the response been so far? The response so far is excellent. It has the right mix of flavor, look, and fun that appeals to people. We have been showing great success with this product so far in all of our main markets. Turkey for example, which is a more difficult market to introduce new products into, has broken every record we have with this drink and the launching happened in their colder season where people usually purchase hot beverages, not cold.
Are these limited edition drinks or will they be permanently available? I think this drink will remain a limited edition or LTO (Limited Time Offer) as we call it. As this beverage is only available in the Middle East and is not a part of our core product range I do not see it staying on the menu permanently. I do, however, see another version(s) coming out in the coming year. I think once Caribou US sees the great success we had with this kind of non-coffee based beverages they may adopt this product into their own menu and then we can expect to see it on our menus more permanently. We have a winning product and I want to share it with our loyal guests and create more raving fans for Caribou. That is why we do what we do.
What special care has been taken for the calorie conscious customers? Look, I can give you a half page spiel about how we have a great diet menu, which we do, and how our Northern lights beverages are unmatched in the region, which they are. But, I won’t. These new beverages are not for diet conscious people, don’t get me wrong they are not crazy 600-800 calorie drinks either, but they are not what most would consider a healthy option. We were not trying to create a
healthy beverage, our arsenal of products has an abundance of healthy items and several customizable healthy options, but Blended Cupcake Snowdrifts are not one of them. This is an indulgent drink, not for those who are looking to trim the calories. This is a great product to have on your free day not as a light option. I have even tried making this as a low sugar option using our famous sugar free syrups, and with skimmed milk. It just did not taste the same. I even recommend to our team to inform the guests not to adjust it to try to make it lighter, they will get disappointed and that is not what we want.
How often do you introduce new drinks at Caribou Coffee? We usually launch 3-5 new beverages/year, and it takes much effort to really get everything in place to do this successfully. We have to stay innovative with our menu to keep the leader position in the market. It is not enough to only have amazing quality products, we constantly have to challenge ourselves to improve, innovate, and take it to the next level. Keeping our guests happy and building that basis of trust and respect with our guests is the cornerstone of our success in this region. Competition in this coffee shop culture that we live in is fierce. We have to stay ahead of the curve and make sure we are either creating the new trends in the market that people want, or we will be left behind. Be very sure that Caribou is in the market to stay, we have dug in our heels, and planted deep strong roots and have made our mark in this region. We have built the community place our guests love and you can guarantee we are confident to launch only the best products for our beloved guests.
Your message for us at City Pages magazine? “Life is short. Stay awake for it.” Pretty much sums it up. If you haven’t tried the new Blended Cupcake Snowdrift then you really need to. See you soon at Caribou. June 2013

KINDA & Rana Al-Omani
Kuwait’s energetic and dedicated fitness and health fanatic Meet Rana Al-Omani, one of Kuwait’s first fitness instructors with a penchant for healthy living. Her lifestyle encompasses health and nutrition as well as good fun thrown in the mix. She is energetic, inspiring and incredibly supportive of her peers who are in the same mind-set as she is, being the follow your dream and desires. Rana graduated from Boston’s Northeastern University with a degree in Civil Engineering, but stayed on past her graduation to continue studying fitness and culinary art; both equally exciting fields to her. She stretched out her stay in the US for just six months, but those few months dictated her fate and projected her onto the path that she quite shrewdly envisioned she would be on. This talented woman is a quiet entrepreneur; she is half of the duo behind the much loved buongiorno sandwich shop, which boasted the concept of fresh wholesome ingredients at a time when sandwich delis weren’t quite what they are now. Her sandwich ideas inspired a new crop of shops toting the concept of the fresh and healthy sandwich, wiping out the need for unhealthy lunch options that once were the only option to choose from. She has recently sold her share of the business, to concentrate on her other passion. Nowadays Rana runs her incredibly popular gym entitled Rana Fitness where she leads Zumba, and Masala Banghra classes as well as Yoga, Hip Hop and total body workouts. She was able to turn an old empty space, very kindly allocated to her at the Woman’s
www.citypageskuwait.com
Cultural Center in Khaldiya into a packed class of women almost every day of the week. She has a host of followers, and has proudly produced a few qualified instructors who loved the fitness crazes so much that they have gone on to themselves qualify to run classes across Kuwait at the various gyms. This concept of female fitness instructors was unheard of at one time, but things have changed dramatically once people like Rana were able to show others the importance of fitness and healthy living. She has paved the way for so many others to follow their bliss, for she has successfully managed to show everyone the role that determination is key in everything one does. I have attended a few of the classes and have always left wanting to go back the very next day. My own determination requires work, however I can honestly say that attending a class at Rana Fit will send you home with a big smile on your face, and a renewed sense of vigor. To find out more she can be found on ranafit.com. Special and on-going thanks goes out to ‘The Living Room’ Lounge at Marina Waves for hosting us and our monthly guests; the location is one of the most beautiful in Kuwait.

Egg on the face If you have oily skin, apply the white of one egg on the face. If you have dry skin take only the egg yolk, whip it up and apply. Keep the mixture on the face for around 15 minutes and then rinse. Both egg white and yolk narrow the pores of the skin thus preventing wrinkling. And if wrinkles are already there, they shrink and minimise them.
The pink glow
Look Beautiful Naturally Tomatoes
Juicy Treatment
Pulverize a fresh tomato and mix it with two tablespoons of milk. Apply the mixture on the face and leave it on for about ten minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water.
Pineapple juice, apple juice and lemon juice are all great remedies when applied to the skin for preventing wrinkles. Make a mixture of a tablespoon each of the freshly extracted juice of all three; apply on the face and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. The mild bleaching and astringent properties in these juices will keep your face glowing.
Besides being nature's own exfoliating agent, this blend is also a deep skin cleanser which helps remove oiliness and brings a fresh and vibrant glow on your face.

Here's a secret not many 'beauty experts' will tell you. Put a high stool at the edge of your bed (it should be higher than the bed) and place your legs on top of the stool so that they are elevated from the body. Hold this position for some minutes, as long as your body can hold it. This helps drain fluids and rush the blood to the upper half of the body giving your neck and face an instant pink glow to last the evening.
Sleep tight There is a direct connection between sound sleep and a glowing skin. A restful sleep of seven to eight hours is important as it greatly relaxes face muscles. Moreover, skin cells tend to regenerate twice as fast when you are sleeping. For best results, it is imperative to have a regular sleep cycle.
{Beauty}
Creamy complexion
Hair conditioner
Perky eyes
If you need an instant flush on your face, and you do not want to rush to a beauty parlour. Take some fresh cream (malai) and massage your face with an upward circular movement. Besides softening the skin it will make it moist and banish dryness. A massage stimulates facial blood circulation as well as removes dead cells, giving it a creamy complexion
For silken hair, rub in a paste of banana, cucumber, tomato and curd an hour before bath. This is a natural conditioner and once you have rinsed and shampooed you will notice the big difference. Your hair will not just look shiny and silken but will bristle with life and complement the glow on your skin.
Eyes are as much a part of beauty as the face and hair. Soothe tired eyes by gently applying cucumber slices on closed eyelids. Keep the cucumber in the freezer for an hour then cut two thick slices and put them one on each eyelid for about half an hour. This will make your eyes perk up instantly.

Repeat six times on each side alternately.

Banishing blackheads
No amount of natural beauty aids will help if you don't follow a healthy diet plan. Medical research has proved that there are certain foods that can impact the colour of your skin. A healthy diet rich in whole foods, fruits and vegetables will provide the skin with most of the antioxidants, vitamins, essential fatty acids and minerals it needs to be radiant.
Blackheads can be the bane of any skin and they are best eliminated. The most natural way to banish blackheads is to make a paste of one tablespoon of curd and one teaspoon of crushed black pepper. Apply the paste and leave it on for 15 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly for removal of blackheads.
Exercise, exercise, exercise! Nothing in the world can give you a better skin than regular workouts. The medical reason for this is simple. When you do aerobics, you work up a sweat which helps clear up pores and clean the skin of blackheads and acne. Exercising also improves the blood circulation and provides cells with nutrients so vital for that healthy flush.
Beauty fruits This is a very popular treatment at most leading spas. Mash a tablespoon of fresh papaya and add to it the pulp of a tablespoon of green grapes. Squeeze a lemon and mix to make a smooth paste. Apply on the face and leave for 15 to 20 minutes. This has a tightening effect when it dries out and can be easily washed off. Rinse thoroughly for a radiant look.

Layla Al Aradi A force to be reckoned with
Layla Al Aradi, owner of Layla Harmony, gives some advice on makeup and talks candidly about her background, motives, and goals for the growing beauty empire and shares some insight into what makes her who she is — the makeup pioneer of Kuwait.
Ever since she was a little girl Layla Al Aradi liked to do things in a way she could only imagine and to the best possible quality.
course on training about makeup. She is the only one with the authorization and capability to be able to teach and give certificates to do professional and self-makeup.
“I don’t like to be 50/50,” she said. “When I was young, I liked to do everything by myself, and the idea of that comes because I need something different.”
“I’m the only one that has these things,” she said. “Also, I’m the only distributer and we are the only ones in Kuwait to have the authorization for these things, because we have a training center and have the authorization from them, other distributors in the world, they don’t have this.”
Layla, the pioneer of makeup in Kuwait, used her passion and drive to work hard and she and her sister opened Layla Harmony in 1997. “At the time, the makeup, and the fashion, and the hairdressers, and everything on these fields weren’t for the Kuwaitis,” she said. “These makeup artists and the hairdressers were especially for non-Kuwaitis, so we are the first Kuwaitis in Kuwait that make a salon and take different look or different concept of what is a beauty center.” Layla opened the salon with the idea of catering to the Kuwaiti ladies, and for this she only wanted the best of the best. Her company owns two make up brands; one of them from Italy, Layla Cosmetics retail product, the other one is a professional makeup from Holland. “I developed myself and now we have three branches in Kuwait and we make the franchise in Kuwait,” she said. “My staff are also Kuwaitis, we have other foreign people from other nationalities, but we focus for the Kuwaitis.” Layla said she sees most Kuwaitis come to her Shaab location, while more foreigners indulge on her services at her other two locations in Fintas and Farwaniya. Ever since she started Layla Harmony, her services are kept up to date, with the latest trends on makeup and hair. The place, and the quality is still the same from the day they opened, until today. “Other salons, they change them year by year,” she said. “For me, I don’t have these things. Customers come for my design, for my style, what I want, not for what they want. I understand what they want, but finally I put my touches that once she goes to a wedding or a party or anything, all the people will say, “She came from Layla Harmony.” This is the difference between the others and me.” Layla has taken many courses to be as talented as she is. In 2010, she took a master www.citypageskuwait.com
She said these last three years she has seen many people being makeup artists “or they thought they are make up artists,” she said. “What’s the difference between a makeup artists and the real makeup artist and the one with the name makeup artist?” She said in Kuwait most of the ladies are makeup artists, most of the ladies they are fashion designers. Adding she believes a makeup artist is not just a person who takes the pen and the brushes and they draw for themselves. “This is not a real make up artists,” she said. “The real make up artist is to show the people what is your work for the other people and not worry about yourself. It is so easy to put makeup on yourself.” She’s very passionate about this subject, adding a real makeup artist is the one who does someone else’s makeup and manages to bring out their beauty, taking in mind what suits that person and not what they personally like. “The touches are for the other people, not for you,” she said. “For example, when I see on Instagram, I see “so and so make up artist,” I want to see her work, all of her work (done on) by herself, so how can I judge that she is a makeup artists. This is wrong and this is what I have studied.” Layla has studied in Europe and has a good understanding on how to study someone’s features and put makeup for the people. That’s why she travels in search to learn more and she likes to share her knowledge with her staff, so all her girls are at the same level. She takes this very seriously. For hair, her sister is the expert and the one that keeps the hairdressers up to date, as well as the spa has an expert to lead the girls. Layla Harmony

{Interview} only hires those who already have experience as a professional. They will never accept workers if they are not experts, if they don’t have their diploma. Recent hires are always on a probation period to see their work and aptitudes. They do not hire someone as a cleaner and after a while she becomes a face beautician or makeup, the first condition is to be an expert. If someone qualifies for the job, but still she needs to be taught, Layla and her experts take the time to teach her, to train her and after one year or year and a half, if she’s ok, then she’ll start taking customers. Her recent hires never come and start taking customers. “Because the client trusts us, they know what they need, I give them the right way, and the right advice for what they need,” she said. “We built this thing, we built this name. It’s so difficult to cheat people. Once I cheat them this will not be good for me, I will loose them. I built this honestly from the beginning, 15 years ago.” Looking back, Layla remembers she was twelve when she first used makeup for her brother’s wedding. “I put myself,” she said. “When I was in the middle school and high school, my sister used to do my hair, and now she is my partner in the salon.” She said she doesn’t think there is an age for make up, because the idea of makeup, how you put on makeup, if it’s done in a correct appropriate way, it doesn’t matter if you are a girl or an older woman. “Now what we see in Kuwait, and even on the gulf, most of them have a misunderstanding for make up,” she said. “They put party makeup on the morning; this is a problem we have,” adding she knows when she puts on makeup she has to know for what the makeup is for. “Is it for work or for a party or for wedding?” she said. “Once we know the idea and when we put the makeup, it is even for the kids, but you have to know when and for what.” She rarely uses makeup during the day. Layla said she only wears a base, foundation and mascara. She advises women to use the correct makeup remover as well. “For mascara, if it’s a waterproof, use something for waterproof,” she said. “Most of the girls use the napkin wipe, when you rub your eyes, your eyelashes will fall.” Layla advises to choose a good brand for makeup remover. “The way and how you take it out, is very important,” she said. “You should separate the eye makeup remover from the makeup remover for all your face. For oily skin, some people use the gel or the foam cleansing, which is not good for your eyes. The eyes are a very sensitive are, you should take the makeup off the eyes with an eye makeup remover and the rest with normal makeup remover.” During this summer, Layla advises for women to put a base and, “now you have foundation with SPF to protect your face, it’s something very simple, you avoid the heavy makeup, because of your skin, because of your look also. I always see the simplicity is more pretty.” Layla has done an amazing job totally separating her life from her work, because she is a strong lady at work. “Because of this strength I am successful at my job,” she said. “I like everything on top, I do not forgive any mistakes, because I believe if there is a mistake it will build and build up, built up, built up, and that’s why I don’t like any mistakes. About my life, I’m so simple, because most of the people when they see me at work, they think I’m very strict, they think I am a super hero that I have a mood, but I am not like that. I am simply a very simple lady.” Layla is very proud of herself, she’s very proud of her work. That’s why she wants to be the best, she and her work; because she respects herself she respects her job. She can easily relates to her staff and her customers. Her staff said she is one of those people who do not care about the money, she cares about a job well done and about the satisfaction the client will have with their work. At Layla Harmony they are professionals and they are always asking, “What’s new.” They don’t want to be successful with what they have, they want the newest things; they are very generous in sending their employees for training. Layla and her sister travel two or three times a year and get the latest trends, then they come back to train their staff on what they’ve learned. She and her sister are proud of their staff, and they like to keep them up to date. This is like an academy for the staff; but it’s also a team environment where titles don’t matter. They are all working together, to serve all the customers so they are satisfied. From Layla, all the way to cleaning staff there is no pyramid as they all work together, as a team. Layla has lead by example, striving for perfection. Her passion for her work is evident, and workers talk highly of Layla and her ethics as a businesswoman. Layla is proud of her work and is looking to surprise her customers later this year.

Tips for looking your best From the time your alarm clock sounds to when you snuggle up to slumber, looking your personal best may be an all-day ritual -- but it's an investment that will have you not only looking beautiful but feeling that way, too. It is said that "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." But we think it's actually in the eye of the woman who gets the most sleep, drinks the most water and follows this daily regimen.
WAKE UP CALL
10
Slough and soak to soften. During your morning shower, exfoliate dead skin cells before using your favorite body wash. Keep showers quick and the temp not too hot to minimize oil loss. Pat your body dry with a soft towel, and, for the finishing touch, apply your favorite fragrant lotion, heated with a hairdryer. Let your skin drink up as much as it can for the ultimate in smooth skin... and while you are at it, drink a glass of water, too. The more hydrated you are on the inside, the more you will radiate on the outside.
9
Befriend concealer. Brighten up your entire face with dabs of concealer. Use it on the inner and outer corners of eyes to mask dark circles, the outer sides of nostrils to cover deep pores and redness, and the sides of lips to fill in lines. Follow it up with a light blend of foundation plus moisturizer (both oil free with sun protection) to achieve a smooth, even skin tone. And always use clean makeup brushes!
8
Tame your brows. Well-groomed brows are the key to a polished look. Regularly wax, thread or tweeze and perform maintenance as needed. If you are tweezer shy and only trust the pros, conceal stray hairs with a swipe of bronzer on your browbone in between appointments.
7
Experiment. Seasonally (or more if you dare), replace your favorite color product, be it lip gloss, eye liner or shadow, with something new to feel re-energized. www.citypageskuwait.com
DAYTIME DUTIES
6
Become a survivor. Assemble your "can't live without it" kit consisting of three must-have beauty items such as lip gloss, mascara, blotting papers, concealer or a hairbrush. Create a few kits to stash in key places -- your desk drawer, your glove compartment and your purse for touch-ups.
5
A pinch goes a long way. Pinch your cheeks and your lips just before you want to make a great impression. This teeny moment of pain will yield huge payoffs as both areas will fill with a natural rosy color guaranteed to make you glow.
4
Let your inner beauty shine outward. All day long, be mindful of your stature. Stand up straight with your shoulders back. Walk tall and think positive thoughts. Offer up your happiest smile, complete with whitened teeth (skip the dark beverages or use a straw) and lips moisturized with lip balm and glistening with your favorite gloss.
SWEET DREAMS
3
Come clean. No matter how tired you are or how close the sun is to rising, wash and moisturize your face before you hit the pillow to detox your precious pores of all of the dirt that has accumulated during the day. At the very least, start with baby steps: Tuck a pack of makeup remover wipes in your nightstand.
2
Preserve your perfect manicure. Apply a clear topcoat every other night post-manicure to help your fabulous color polish stay chip free for as long as possible. Also, when doing dishes, using gloves will save your polish too... not to mention help you avoid the curse of dry, dishpan hands.
1
Bye bye, bedhead. Rule #1: Don't go to bed with wet hair -- it increases the risk of hair breakage. Rule #2: Brush your hair before bed with a clean hairbrush (give it a soapy water bath once a week). Rule #3: Add a few drops of your favorite serum to fight morning frizz.

Lights, Camera, Action! Behind the scenes of Watan TV's Latest Ramadan Cooking Program
Asmaa Saif
What's the new thing you are offering in this program as a presenter? People got used to me as a more serious presenter in Sabah Al Watan so in this programme I want to remind people of what Asma is really like; the fun, the hyper, the funny Asmaa that they all knew back when I was doing Foda Wela Moda. You chemistry with the chef: I have known the Chef for a while as he used to be a guest on Sabah Al Watan. He came across as quite a serious character in Sabah Al Watan however, we are seeing such a different side to him in this programme - he's actually quite a funny guy! We are letting him do his thing and just play in the kitchen; its his favourite environment. What's the difference between this cooking show and the other cooking programs in Ramadan? I think most of the cooking shows in Ramadan are quite traditional with similar concepts; We are trying to present something easy to watch and fun - we dont want to bore people, we want to make them laugh and cook!
Noor Ali
The programme is a Ramadan cooking show with a twist on Al-Watan TV. Its a 20 minute light-hearted cooking show with Chef Wissam and our beautiful presenter Asma Saif. The location is very different and I dont think any Kuwaiti cooking show has attempted using a location like this before; it's your average hotel kitchen with stainless steel setting. Of course we put our personal touches to it but the idea is to move away from the studio environment. I am trying to put a western touch to the traditional Kuwaiti Ramadan cooking shows. Taking elements of the Arab culture and mixing it with the fast paced, quick cuts, moving cameras, edgy way of filming; inspired by such programmes like Gordon Ramsys hells kitchen except with a bit more glamour due to our girly touches. Blog Name: Ansam518 Started from: April 15th 2007
Please introduce yourself and let our readers know a little bit about where you’re from and say a few words about how you got started in the online world. Well, it's just me, Ansam I. AlRadwan, famous for Ansam518, from Kuwait. I started of with Petroleum Engineering in College, got my BSBA in International Business Management, worked in Finance & Investment, moved to Telecom where I worked in Business Intelligence and Market Research, and ended up on my own in Social Media! So you get the idea, I am just random like that! I have the engineering mind and the creative artistic side going on here! I like the fact that I am busy and I like to keep busy and be creative (useful). I started of as an anonymous contributor to a shared blog, and no I am not going to tell you which one ;) but how did I started Ansam518? Well, I was a silent reader to the few local blogs in Kuwait at the time, then I started commenting using an alias nickname, because I was too cool for it… Later on, I decided to comment with my name on some issues that I wanted people to know it was coming from me, but then I just could not help but create my very first blog on blogspot to use as a getaway and a free space where I express myself freely!
account (and Twitter sometimes) with more posts.
What do you find most challenging about blogging? The creativity in coming up with unique posts, creating your own style, and keeping up with everything new to share with your fans, followers, and readers.
What methods do you use to drive traffic to your blog? Be a creative writer, write about current issues, use hashtags, and just be myself. I also like to create relationships with people and organizations with good will and causes, and together we can put the word out and spread awareness.
Category: Anything and Everything focusing on food, travel, and causes.
Is there a special meaning behind the name of your blog? Yes. Ansam, my real name and 518 is May 18th – my birthday.
www.citypageskuwait.com
In your view, why do most bloggers fail? I wouldn’t say “most” bloggers fail! I would rather say why “some” of them don’t last or fail to be present or just give up! I don’t have a solid answer for this to be quite honest, but bloggers should be committed, giving, and creative. Bloggers that are too commercial won’t last forever. Bloggers must keep in mind that they are in for a clean competition, and should stop taking things personal. They also need to be humble! When most of our fans label us as celebrities, we should take responsibility to live up to that title, and not abuse it! What is the biggest blogging mistake you have done? I can’t think of any – I just love it. What methods do you use to make money from your blog? Banners/Spaces for rent on my blog.
Are you a part time blogger or a full time blogger? Full time blogger, but I do freelance jobs on the side.
Can you please give few blogging tips for our readers to build a better blog? The cyber space is HUGE and there is a place for everyone for sure, you just have to stand out with your own creative style and ideas. Do it from your heart with passion, and you will be more than fine.
How much time do you spend on your blog daily and weekly? That really depends on a lot of factors! I like to have at least one post per day, but I can go up to five or six, depending on the current happenings! I really care about the quality and not the quantity… but I make up for that on my Instagram
Your message for our magazine? I see your team present in most events in town, and your articles are fun to read & up-to-date, which means you are there and you are doing a great job. Keep it up and I hope to see more and more success and great outcome from your magazine.

Although most women would try just about anything to get rid of wrinkles for good, even some of the bravest among us aren't willing to turn to Botox needles or face-slapping facials. Luckily, skin care wimps are no longer stuck with just creams and serums. This tiny device delivers a mini face-lift thanks to electrical currents that perk up muscles (don't worry, it feels completely harmless). Bonus: All you need to know is how to work an on-off switch.

BLISS 'PORE'-FECTOR GADGET KIT
Consider this the most painless extraction you will ever have. Sonic vibrations from this gizmo help remove oil and dirt deep in pores, while the daily toner and facial masks keep your surface radiant and smooth. Basically, it’s complexion perfection in a box.
GOODY QUICKSTYLE PADDLE BRUSH
JONATHAN BEAUTY WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEM
The idea that even your hair is above tap water may seem a little snooty, but then again, so does buying a $60 shampoo. This small showerhead acts just like a Brita filter, removing all the chemicals and metals to restore your water's pH balance. You only have to install it once (it takes 4 easy steps) and it won't affect your shower pressure. The result? Your hair sustains less damage on a daily basis, making it dramatically healthier (i.e. soft and shiny).
OK, so this isn't exactly high tech, but it definitely qualifies as a gadget in our books. Imagine toweldrying your hair and untangling knots at the same time. This works just like a regular brush, except it has super-absorbent microfiber bristles that sop up moisture, cutting back dry-time dramatically. Bonus: This gadget makes your morning routine even quicker.
JOSE EBER GLASS TECH FLAT IRON

Cool New Gadgets To Add To Your Wishlist
This month, our top new gadget picks include a Silent Velcro, a gyrostabilized monocular, an adapter that turns your iPhone into a DJ station, and more.
First Alert Atom Smoke And Fire Alarm Only three ounces and the size of an egg, the Atom is the smallest smoke alarm made. It has a photoelectric sensor that detects smoke from smoldering fires, making it more sensitive than ionization alarms that detect fast-flaming fires
Urbanears Slussen The Slussen turns an iPhone into a DJ station. The threepronged adapter plugs into an iOS device, headphones, and speaker hookup. The accompanying app has scratch, cross-fader, and equalizer functions.
The Self Balancing Electric Unicycle
This is the briefcase-sized electric unicycle that keeps a rider perfectly balanced at all times with gyroscopic sensors. Equally suited for urban commuting and suburban recreation, the unicycle requires a rider to merely stand on its two folding feet pads; gyroscopic sensors detect a rider's subtle feet movements while accounting for a shoulderslung backpack or bag for its center-of-mass calculations. Gripping the handlebar and leaning forward results in steady acceleration without jolting, while leaning backward brings the unicycle to a slow, steady stop.
Sonos Playbar
Targus Touch Pen
With the Sonos Playbar, late-night action movies won’t bother roommates. In night mode, the sound bar—which has nine amplifiers—automatically compresses highs and lows. Explosions diminish, while soft conversations come across clearly.
With the Touch Pen, a user can convert any Windows 8 laptop monitor into a touchscreen. The bristle-tipped pen relays its position via infrared and ultrasonic signals to a USB receiver that attaches to the side of the screen with magnets.
TaylorMade R1 Driver Golfers can customize the R1 Driver midgame to get the most yardage out of their swings. A player uses an included torque wrench to adjust loft between 8 and 12 degrees and choose between seven face angles to fix hooks or slices

Adidas Energy Boost Runners won’t lose the spring in their step when wearing Adidas Energy Boost sneakers. The midsoles contain thousands of cell-shaped capsules made from thermoplastic polyurethane, which is more elastic than the EVA foam traditionally used in soles.
Velcro Industries Unidirectional Jabra Motion The Unidirectional HTH 719 is the first silent Velcro. Unlike in traditional Velcro, all the hooks on the strip face the same direction; with a pull, they slide out of their corresponding loops without making a ripping sound.
The Motion Bluetooth headset knows whether a user is walking or sitting still. An accelerometer inside the earpiece detects changes in speed and direction. Internal software analyzes the info and adjusts sound levels while the wearer is moving, which is when things get noisy.
Fraser Optics Monolite
Nooly
The Monolite is the only gyro-stabilized monocular in the world; it cancels out 98 percent of motion, such as trembling hands. Birders can use its smartphone attachment to record video of feathered friends more than 3,200 feet away.
The weather app Nooly generates forecasts localized within 0.4 miles of a given spot. The software analyzes real-time radar and satellite data from NASA and NOAA to create hour-long predictions broken into five-minute intervals.
Cobra iRadar The iRadar Atom radar detector has the longest range of any model its size—about that of a deck of cards. It connects via Bluetooth to a smartphone, which serves as the screen and displays current speed and radars up to seven miles away.
Airocide
The Airocide purifies air without a filter. Inside each of two chambers, a 254-nanometer light activates a photocatalytic reaction on titanium-dioxide-coated glass rings. Anything with a carbon bond—allergens and bacteria—reacts with the rings and is destroyed on contact.

{People's Person of the Month}
Because of her hard work at such a young age, Joanne Al Abduljalil is this PEOPLE’S PERSON OF THE MONTH Currently at her first job, Joanne Al Abduljalil has accomplished a lot ever since graduation. She talks about how her organization skills, social abilities, and willingness to work hard have made her get a great start into her professional career.
What is your current job title? Public Relations Officer What is a day at work like for you? Rushing, loaded, full of activities and duties to be done with. We work with deadlines too; therefore being super active is a requirement. Please tell us about your education? I graduated from the Lycee Francais de Koweit High School and joined GUST (Gulf University for Science and Technology) for my university studies majoring in Mass Communication, Public Relations and Advertising with a minor in Marketing. In addition to that, I always insisted on being involved in educational seminars dealing with media, communication and journalism. Can you tell us a little about your career path? It is my first job after graduating, fits me perfectly, Hamdulillah, and I’m still at the beginning of the road. What do you enjoy most about working in the PR field? I enjoy dealing with a variety of people, different interests, different point of views and getting closer to this small world. PR gives you the chance to interact with the trend, technologies, and all kind of people, all social classes. It is full of life, full of headaches too and filled with knowledge on a professional and personal level. What are your PR strengths? I believe that being social is a strength that I have and serves me as a PR person, in addition to always being active, and organized. I never say no, can’t classify it whether it is strength or a weakness. What qualities make you the People’s Person? I never say no to anyone, always manage to help in a way, encourage all businesses, having an office full of colors, and chocolate I guess makes people want to always be around (I’m a sweet lover). Nevertheless, the public relations department serves people, students and departments, thus we deal with everyone all the time. What are your weaknesses? Being sensitive sometimes is not the best for a PR person. Give us an example of when you thought outside of the box. How did it help your employer? I always try to think outside the box, break the odd and come up with new ideas for any event. I always try to involve students, their talents, their artwork and their input. I also manage to always keep the image of my workplace the best within its internal and external publics, partners and parties in many different and various ways. What do you do to de-stress and stay motivated? www.citypageskuwait.com
Organize my time and pamper myself. How do you respond to criticism? Pleasing everyone is something impossible to achieve, but I try my best to be in good terms with whomever I know in this whole wide world. I accept positive and negative criticism in a respectful way for my own benefit. Along the way, have there been any individuals who particularly impressed and inspired you? Yes of course. I always get impressed by people who are determined to do their work, are loyal and professional. I always tend to learn from them on an on-going level and have them in the back of my head if any situation happens, to know how to act. How does social media fit into your work? It is a very important factor and impact in PR tasks and jobs. It is what makes everything trendy, hit and spread nowadays in Kuwait and worldwide. When it comes to my work, it adds spices and activity to my workplace, and creates a sort of a friendship, a loyalty and some caring between both parties. How you organize, plan, and prioritize your work? I’m very organized, sticky notes are all over my desk, notes on my board and reminders on my phone help me to be professional as much as I can. I work better under pressure and deadlines. I’m productive when music is on and I don’t have specific working hours. To have your work done, professionally, you need to run after it and make sure everything is perfect and under control. Therefore, I don’t believe that a PR person works only within official work hours. What advice would you give to PR students, and those who are soon to graduate? I would advise PR students to take their studies seriously, because once you are an employee, your tasks are fully under your responsibility and you will be the one in charge if anything goes wrong. I would advise them also to take writing classes to a higher level because they are required in a PR job. Last but not least, seek for a job where you learn something new every day. What work have you done recently, which makes you really proud? Every task achieved and thanked for makes me proud at the end of the day and makes me forget all the tiredness myself and my team went through. The various lectures, seminars, workshops I have attended, my volunteering work in different associations and my activities in my interests made me really proud. I recently received my acceptance letter from Yale School of Management for my Pre-MBA program. Your message for our magazine? I would like to thank the magazine’s team for putting up together a bouquet of great and very interesting topics that serve all the Kuwaiti population, different ages and different interests. It is a magazine I can see full of life, with a scoop on news, and reports the trendiest of the trends nowadays. What I love the most about it is its encouragement for young Kuwaitis in whatever they do or achieve. Keep up the excellent job.

Abdulaziz Al-Khamis
Abdulaziz is a Kuwaiti Film maker / Visual Artist and a Script Writer. He graduated from the uk, with a passion to mix art and visuals
A Brief History of the Cinema Asking what was the first movie ever made is a bit like asking which came first, the chicken or the egg. It's hard to give a definitive reply. The answer really depends on what you consider to be a movie. If you consider a set of moving pictures to be the first movie ever made, then Eadweard Muybridge's high-speed photographs of a horse galloping can rightfully claim the title. While these photos can be considered the first moving pictures, were they truly the first movie ever made? The best we can do is make a case for the leading contenders and let you decide for yourself what actually is the first movie ever. The First Motion Picture Ever Made - The Horse In Motion (1878) Eadweard Muybridge's groundbreaking motion photography was accomplished using multiple cameras and assembling the individual pictures into a motion picture. Muybridge was commissioned by Leland Stanford (California governor/ Stanford University) to scientifically answer a popularly debated question during this era - are all four of a horse's hooves ever off the ground at the same time while the horse is galloping? Muybridge's time-motion photography proved they indeed were, and the idea of motion photography was born. First Home Movie Ever Made - Roundhay Garden Scene (1888) Early movie history is surrounded in the mists of time, as different competitors developed movie technology simultaneously. However, the Roundhay Garden Scene is thought to be the oldest surviving film on record. The Roundhay Garden Scene was directed by the French inventor, Louis Le Prince and features some members of Le Prince's family playfully walking around a garden. The film lasts about two seconds. First Movie Ever Shot (U.S.A.) Monkeyshines No. 1 (1889 or 1890) Monkeyshines, No. 1 may very well be the first movie ever shot using a continuous strip of film. It was shot as a camera test by W.K.L. Dickson and William Heise, both of whom worked for Thomas Edison. Historians are unsure of the exact date this film was shot as it was filmed to be a camera test and not for commercial purposes. The film depicts a blurry Edison co-worker goofing off for the camera. It was quickly followed by Monkeyshines No. 2 and 3. The First Copyrighted Movie Ever Made www.citypageskuwait.com
Fred Ott's Sneeze (1893-4) This title goes to Fred Ott's Sneeze, which reportedly was the first movie ever made at Thomas Edison's Black Maria rooftop studio. The actual name of this movie is Record of a Sneeze, which was made in late 1893 and copyrighted on January 7, 1894. This movie was made for the Kinetoscope and not intended to be projected. First Movie Ever Made for Projection -Workers Leaving the Lumiere Factory (1895) Movies for mass public consumption are considered to be the invention of Auguste and Louis Lumiere. Edison's interest in movies was to sell his Kinetoscope machines, designed as individual 'peep shows" in which a person looked into a box and saw a moving picture. The Lumiere brothers envisioned movies as public showings. The two approaches are like the difference between listening to an I-pod on your headphones versus sitting in a theater and listening to a concert. The Lumiere Brothers held a private screening of projected movies on March 22, 1895. This
test screening was a success. The Lumiere's then held their first paid, public screening of movies on December 28, 1895 in the basement the Salon Indien du Grand CafĂŠ in Paris. The basement was set up with a hundred seats. Thirty-three people paid attendance to witness the birth of cinema. The program that night consisted of ten Lumiere shorts, each running approximately 46 seconds in length. While historians consider the Lumiere screening to be the first demonstration of movies as a commercial medium, they do so because of the projection system used by the Lumiere brothers. Almost two months earlier, two other brothers showed moving pictures to a paying audience using a different technology. First Motion Picture Projected for an Audience - Berlin Wintergarten Novelty Program (1895) Max and Emil Sklandanowsky were German inventors who created the Bioskop, a different technology for showing moving pictures that involved an elaborate machine using two parallel film strips and two lenses which were able to flash pictures on a screen at 16 frames per second. This was enough of a frame rate to give the illusion of motion. On November 1, 1895, nearly two months before the Lumiere public showing, the Sklandanowsky brothers presented a moving picture show as part of the Berlin WIntergarten festival as part of a program of novelties. The moving pictures were a big hit and played to sold out shows in the ensuing weeks; however, the Lumiere projection system was technologically superior to the complicated arrangements necessary to show Bioskop pictures, which is why the Lumiere's are generally credited with the creation of the commercial medium we call movies. Conclusion So what was the first movie ever made? That's really up to you and how you define what a movie is.

Fame in the Adriatic Chapter Four
“Some afraid of the Church, some of the Venetians.” We leave and ask Master Williams, the Englishman who lives across from our house, to take us to Church. Williams doesn’t like the Pope, and he doesn’t like Luther who also doesn’t like the Pope. Williams likes Henry, who liked his brother’s wife enough to marry her, and the sister of his mistress enough to change England’s religion. Well, so I like Giuseppe, but I do not worship Poseidon. Men. We ask him—correction—it is Caterina, beautiful, well-mannered Caterina who says with deluging sweetness that she would be grateful, nay, honored, if the everso-kind and ever-so-gallant Master Williams could accompany us to Church. All right, maybe she doesn’t exactly use these words, but I feel as though she does. He agrees to chaperone us, and together we walk to the edge of the block where the Cretan brothers are sitting with their carriages. Two carriages, two horses, and two lying Cretans. When Williams negotiates the price with Marcus who sits on top of a green carriage plated with gold attached to a brown horse, Quintus breaks into a fit of coughs. “Why now, brother, do tell me you are well?” This vulgar deception is only intended to raise the price, an act unworthy of any stage. “Dear Master Williams, it seems as though I am incapable of loaning you one of my carriages for I will need to take my brother to hospital before his coughing gets worse. You see, he is come down with something.” I would’ve just paid another ducat and ended the scene, but Master Williams is smarter. “That is a shame, Marcus, because these girls who hope to attend service might use their time in the place of the Lord to pray for your brother’s recovery. Why not drop them at Church on the way to the hospital where you and I together can see to your brother’s well-being?” This would have been the most opportune moment for old Maria to quote the Cretan poet Epimenides, who said, “All Cretans are liars,” but I don’t, for I am the age I live in: modern. When the men settle on a final price, poor coughing Quintus no longer appears to be dying from a mysterious illness. “Maria,” Master Williams says once we enter the carriage, “I hope I am not transgressing upon your status by mentioning how refined you look this morning?” Caterina raises her eyebrow the way I spread my muddy dress to Giuseppe. I, on the other hand, am not a mule and can deflect her reproach with grace and poise. I do not even have to speak. It is just with a gentle nod of my head and a soft, slow blink that I tell my admirer that I am grateful, nay honored, by his ever-so-kind and www.citypageskuwait.com
ever-so-gallant approval. Marcus sits on the upper bench behind his ailing horse. His green-and-gold carriage has an open top that allows my hair to sway this way and that. Caterina and I sit next to one another, both in black wearing bonnets and painted faces. When we reach our destination, Caterina and I split the cost, but Master Williams will have none of it and would rather see our money in our pouches. He pays the lying Cretan and then tips his hat to both of us. “For the prettiest Venetians in the republic.” I make a mental note to pay him a compliment every now and then, or simply to ask about his well-being for I realize that I know more about the fraudulent Cretans than I do about the Englishman who lives across from my house. He readies his hat back upon his head and takes the path that leads to port. I try to remember the first time I met Master Williams, and my mind draws a blank. I shrug it off. If he wants to be asked after then maybe he should stay home every once in a while. He was always somewhere: if not on board a ship, then on a carriage riding up to the city. His loss. “Maria.” Caterina pulls out a blood-red sphere made of glass that fits in the palm of her hand. Out of its small neck spreads the sweetest smelling perfume. “So good!” I react involuntarily despite my attempt to become a new person. It is just that I have heard about them but never smelled them, not even when the perfume boxes were stocked at the harbor. “It is to give you a boost. To help you draw everyone’s attention when you enter. To show your suitor that you are not some ugly spinster we’re trying to dispose of. And also…” Caterina douses me with the perfume, slathering my neck, and rubbing some on my hair. As she does so, I realize that it becomes increasingly hard for her to apply more, and it hits me that my best friend just wasted whatever was left in the bottle on my entrance. Guilt kicks me in the stomach. “Also what?” I ask. “Like you don’t know?” I know, but I still want her to say it, so I shake my head. “To show you that I love you, silly! I’m on your side, Maria. Always. We’re a team.” We look at the Church, its wooden doors shut. Caterina hugs me and whispers, “Do it like a courtesan.” We don’t have any courtesans in our village. There are some in the castles and in the city. The best among them go to Venice for the Queen of the Adriatic loves beauty as much as it loves propriety, and our leaders are mostly merchants who identify themselves as Catholic, but who would think twice before giving a single ducat to the Holy Roman Emperor. Even if there were a threat of war. Venetians don’t like bloodshed in the name of the Lord so they turn our religious wars into commercial enterprises. While Christians butcher one another and fight off Muslims simultaneously, Venice has conquered only the islands that sit on the edge of the Adriatic coast. Once it secures its trading port, it no longer cares for any religious quarrel. As such, we have lived in peace these last thirty years while around us chaos and havoc continue to loom. I straighten my back. I am the attractive one today so Caterina must stay behind to calculate my influence upon the Church attendants. I part the doors and step inside. I even flick my scented hair to diffuse my smell as I walk down the path. If my suitor is sitting on one of the benches, he will love me before we meet in person.
It is magical when I enter. I haven’t only flustered the men; I perturb the preacher himself who stumbles over his sermon on The Black Death by saying the Jews had poisoned “the beds,” instead of “the wells.” I smile, pleased with myself. But Caterina grabs my elbow and yanks me onto one the benches two rows from the back. “I was just getting started!” I hiss. I am angry that she has ruined the first and only moment in my life in which I attract men physically. “It is not your doing! It’s that dog, Vittoria. Look!” Oh. “Why is everyone staring in her direction? She’s ugly!” I can’t see Vittoria’s face but only her back, and with a sourness that burns my throat, I think this is so much prettier than mine, which is suffocating underneath the dark fabric. To make matters worse, her dress isn’t even black. It’s forest green, dark enough to pass as black, but light enough to stand out in the crowd. Her hair isn’t frizzy, either, gathered and tethered. No. It is smooth like melting gold, pouring out of her bonnet with well-behaved ringlets at the bottom that pretend to cover her back, her exposed back. “Her back is showing!” I whisper vehemently. “How well can you see it?” I can’t see it well from this distance no matter how hard I try even though I know what Caterina is asking for: spots. I shake my head. Caterina almost bangs a clenched fist on the bench in frustration. I tell her to settle down and not to attract attention. “I don’t believe this, Maria. The dog has been in seclusion for almost two years. Two years. We all thought she was dying of the pox, and so we danced with pleasure. Now all of a sudden she is Aphrodite? It is despicable! Look at the preacher. He can’t string two words together.” The three of us grew up together like the points of a triangle, Caterina, myself, and Vittoria, were always a unit. But it became too difficult for Vittoria to compete with Caterina, especially when Vittoria turned seven and her courtesan training began. We saw little of one another, and then finally, by ten, the competition passed the point of no return. Our triangle broke, never to be repaired again. I didn’t want to take sides in the beginning, but Vittoria was always busy, always talking about Venice, so I found myself drifting toward Caterina, who made it clear that this was an either-or situation, not both. At thirteen, Vittoria’s face and body broke into horrid spots. By fourteen she had to be isolated. We were overjoyed as though the villain was defeated, so we sang whenever we passed by her house. Vittoria is sixteen now. When I realize this, Caterina’s words come back to me: “So think. You are sixteen! Life doesn’t go backwards, only forwards, and it is time for you to really think about where the next part of your life is heading.” Life doesn’t go backwards. Sitting on the bench at Church next to a fuming Caterina who realizes that she is no longer Helios, god of the Sun, shining upon everything, I start to give my life some serious thought, and the first question that comes to me is: Why in heaven’s name am I here? The truth, the whole truth, the absolute truth is embarrassing. I can barely bring myself to admit it, especially in the place of the Lord. Am I really here just to get back at my best friend? No. I am not that kind of person. My mind drifts to Caterina instead. She is young and pretty, mad with reciprocated love, and her admirer, Alfonso Gardenidis, hails from one of the two hundred families that run the republic. What’s in her future? A life of luxury, a life of love, a life of lavenders and laughter, that’s what. And Vittoria? The ugly dog who spent two years in cramped compartments? Her future contains a court where she will be welcomed. I curse and damn in my head. It matters not what transpired in the past two years, only that she is now recovered and fulfilling the prerequisites of becoming a famous courtesan: driving men to distraction with her beauty. What am I doing with my life? Next to me Caterina is saying, “If only I can get a glimpse of her face, I will feel so much better. I know the marks are there still. They can’t suddenly disappear unless she used witchcraft.” Thankfully, Lady Barberino, who comes down from the City of Corfu every once in a while to check on her patronages, silences my friend. Caterina’s obedience and the distant stutter of the preacher allow me to think of my future. I could run away with Giuseppe and live like a pirate, but I would be shunned from normal life. I would lose everything and everyone I know: my family, my friends. Should it happen, I wouldn’t even be able to count on even Caterina’s friendship. And Giuseppe, he makes me laugh, it’s true, and he has the sweetest, greenest eyes, and softest hair—but can I count on him for anything? I picture my Galen, soaking in the Well of Knowledge. No. I love Giuseppe, and one day, we will both grow up, but ’til then, whatever we do is merely play acting. Caterina’s revelation today complicates my thinking. Is it really possible for a girl to be rejected fourteen times in twelve months, and all because I have a reputation for appreciating science? If that is true and not a gross exaggeration by my friend who just wants me to settle down, and if it is indeed true that this man has stood his ground and asked to see me, regardless of my shameful pursuits, then I suppose I might as well just go ahead and say yes. Husband, wherever you may be sitting in this Church, look at me, for I am decidedly yours.

BOOK CLUB The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society As promised last month I will be reviewing this very interesting book that has a very interesting title. As I was touring Stockholm in the summer of 2009, I picked up that book because it had a very intriguing name that made me want to find out what was the story's about. And now, finally after 4 years' worth of reading other books, I got to it. For those of you who don't know (as well as myself at the time) Guernsey is an island located in the English Channel between England and France, population of a few thousand people. During WWII German occupied it for a few years while trying to invade England which then failed to do so. So the Nazis took shelter in this island as it had a very strategic location that gave them an advantage during the war. The story talks about a group of people who live on the Guernsey island and who hold secret meetings with food and drinks, once stopped by the German military after curfew hours they had to come up with an excuse for these meetings so they ended up saying that they are a literary group that meet once a week to discuss books they have read during the week (as there was nothing else to do at the time during the war). A member of this group ended up reading one book by a famous English author named Juliet Ashton who then ended up corresponding with him by mail from Guernsey to England, talking to her about the books and the war which then turned to be a discussion about their literary group. As they became well acquainted, she started corresponding with a few members of the group and learned a lot about them. The book is written in a letter format, they are all correspondents back and forth between different people, which give the reader the ability to visualize www.citypageskuwait.com

the actual events that happened before those letters were written; to betterexercise for our imagination. Oddly enough this novel is written by two female authors who happen to be family; Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. Mary Ann Shaffer worked as an editor, a librarian, and in bookshops. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was her first novel. Her niece Annie Barrow is the author of the children's series Ivy and Bean, as well as The Magic Half, and they wrote this novel together. This book is about love and loss in times of war and how reading as well as food brings people together which in return leads to forming friendships and great relationships. This is one of many books that will make you fall in love with reading all over again. It's a light read, and it's very enjoyable, as well as historically educational.
As I reviewed the epic Twilight Saga in recent months, the fifth book that completes the series that completes a missing link in the Saga itself has yet to be reviewed. It’s the story of a small character that was introduced in the third book Eclipse; it's called, the Second Short Life of Bree Tanner. Stay Tuned!

June Book Releases Summer is here and the long days beg for some good books. Here are some of the biggest titles coming this month.
Joyland
Stephen King
Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns Lauren Weisberger
Joyland is a throwback to the paperback crime novels that King enjoyed in his youth. As such, he is only making it available in paperback -- no e-book for this one. Joyland takes place in 1973 and is the story of a college student who works as a carny during the summer and must deal with the legacy of a murder and dying child.
This sequel to The Devil Wears Prada takes place 8 years after the last story closed. Andy is now running her own successful bridal magazine with Miranda's other ex-assistant, Emily. Andy is also on the verge of getting married. She should be happy, but soon she finds that the life she has built puts her back in Miranda's path.
Big Brother
TransAtlantic
Lionel Shriver is best known for We Need to Talk about Kevin. Her new novel, Big Brother, is a novel about fat -- literal and figurative. When the protagonist's brother, who she has not seen in years, arrives, he is hundreds of pounds larger than when she last saw him. The conflict exists between the brother who overstays his welcome, the husband who is obsessed with fitness and the wife/ sister who loves to cook and wants to help.
Moving from 1845 to 1919 to 1998, weaving together stories in Canada, Ireland and the United States, TransAtlantic explores the ways in which past touches present and lives are connected. The pillars of the story are Frederick Douglass' visit to Ireland in the midnineteenth century, the first two men to fly a plane across the Atlantic ocean, and the Good Friday Peace Accords.
The Ocean at the End of the Lane
Sisterland
The Ocean at the End of the Lane mixes Gaiman's penchant for fantasy with horror. The narrator in the story must deal with evil forces that were unleashed when his family's boarder stole their car and committed suicide in it. As he struggles to stay alive, he must turn to three unusual ladies who live at the end of the street for help.
Sisterland follows two identical twin sisters with psychic abilities. Vi embraces this side of herself and eventually takes work as a psychic medium. Kate, on the other hand, is embarrassed and shuns that side of herself, which strains the relationship between the sisters. After a devastating earthquake, Vi goes on television to predict that another is coming. Kate, who is afraid her sister is right, must decide between the stable life she has built and the possibility of saving others with her sister.
Entwined with You
One Tiny Lie
The worldwide phenomenon continues as Eva and Gideon face the demons of their pasts, and accept the consequences of their obsessive desires.
Livie has always been the stable one of the two Cleary sisters, handling her parents' tragic death and Kacey's self-destructive phase with strength and maturity. But underneath that exterior is a little girl hanging onto the last words her father ever spoke to her. “Make me proud,” he had said. She promised she would...and she’s done her best over the past seven years with every choice, with every word, with every action.
Lionel Shriver
Neil Gaiman
Sylvia Day
From the moment I first met Gideon Cross, I recognized something in him that I needed. Something I couldn’t resist. I saw the dangerous and damaged soul inside–so much like my own. I was drawn to it. I needed him as surely as I needed my heart to beat.

Nadia AlHassan

Nadia Al-hassan is a student in Ireland, studying Journalism. She is passionate about writing stories and poetry. Nadia loves helping people with her stories. She believes that words are so beautiful and powerful.
His Aching Heart Years ago his house caught on fire and his face was badly damaged and burnt, the scars never really disappeared and it made him stand out. But, he was still the same person, he was still Bader.
Months passed by and his family wanted him to get married. “You are handsome and one day you will find a woman who will tell you everyday,”his mother said to him. Of course though, he knew his mother was only being kind, it was her job to do so. His parents found a woman that they wanted him to meet, but he was scared. The following day, he went with his father to visit the family. He could feel their eyes burning into him, judging him and probably wanting to laugh at him. When it was time to meet their daughter, his heart started to beat so fast, he felt like the room was spinning.
With the pressure of being Kuwaiti and having to always look his best, his scars were keeping him from doing so. Because no matter how hard he tried, people would always look at him. People who had no consideration or respect called him ugly everyday. He was aching. His heart was being torn apart and he no longer had confidence. But, he had the most beautiful heart. He was caring, he was kind and he was always willing to help people no matter what.
“Hello there,” she said quietly with a warm smile on her face. She was beautiful and she had short brown hair with eyes that would melt your heart. As he started to get to know her, he felt a connection and he even forgot about the horrible scars on his face. They chatted for a whole hour and just when he was about to leave she said one last thing, “You are very handsome, from the inside and outside, I hope I see you again.”
One day as he sat in a coffee shop, a few boys passed him and Bader could see them pointing and laughing. He kept his head down, hoping they would go away soon, but they didn’t.
Bader finally found that woman who would call him handsome and love him for the way he is. He finally realized that you couldn’t always please every person as they will always find something wrong with you and put you down. But the people, who matter to you, will always pick you back up and love you no matter what.
“Will I ever fit in?” Bader asked. He was a young man who wanted to be just like everybody else. He wanted to walk through the malls without people staring at him, without getting looks as if he was an alien. He was human and he had feelings, he was just like them so why would they not accept him, why was society being so cruel?
One of the boys threw a comment saying, “Nobody would ever want to marry you, look at your face.” It made Bader sick to his stomach, he was a 23-year-old man but he was so close to tears. He got up and walked out of the place, he couldn’t sit there any longer. That night he went to bed and a million thoughts rushed through his head. “Will anybody ever love me?” he asked himself quietly.
He walks tall and proud through malls now while holding his wives hand. On his face, he wears a smile, the most beautiful thing that anybody could ever wear in this world.

The Selector is a weekly program launched by the British Council on Superstation Radio Kuwait FM 99.7 every Wednesday at 4pm, bringing listeners two hours of Britain’s latest music. The Selector is made up of all styles of contemporary music and features interviews and special studio sessions from new UK artists as well as a mix of UK’s best hits with the aim of bringing together both UK and Kuwait’s culture. The selector is a Folded Wing production commissioned by the British Council.
This May on the Selector Goldierocks played the latest UK music beginning with music by Don Broco, The History Of Apple Pie, and ending up with Dinosaur Pile Up, and Daughter! Goldierocks goes on to state that Daughter’s single Human was taken from their debut album ‘If You Leave’ which came out earlier this year, Goldierocks claims that “this album is known to document a year in Elena’s life, with themes of self-doubt, loneliness, fear, and insecurity.” Goldierocks went on to announce that Dinosaur Pile Up have been touring with Lower Than Atlantis recently, and their new album is out June 17th. The highlight to The Selector’s May session was Alessi’s Ark Live in an exclusive session for The Selector. Alessi’s Ark is a London based twenty-two year old singer, and she talked about her new record ‘The Still Life’ which has been released in the UK and Europe in April. She hopes this record has a “medicinal quality,” and goes on to mention that all she wants this specific album to do is allow people not to wait until they’re eighty years old to feel alive, emphasizing “you can feel it when you’re fifteen or eight and hopefully some people can feel it forever.” Alessi’s Ark went on talking about a different collection of her songs and the stories behind writing each of these songs; stating she wrote her song Tin Smithing about a man named Frank which she met in Galway who had shown her a ”stain glass rose” made in “Galway Cathedral.” Frank had left his fingerprint on Alessi’s Ark’s day and she ended up releasing a song inspired by him. Also on The Selector this month, Fun Adults In Session, who are a “young four piece from Leeds,” they have been getting extra attention from The Selector, and as a result they ended up recording three songs especially for The Selector program when they joined The Selector crew at The Crypt Studios in North London. Goldierocks went on to play two of the three songs the band recorded for The Selector, titled ‘Acacia’, and ‘Sap Solid’. Fun www.citypageskuwait.com
Adults In Session also made the “Ones To Watch in 2013” list, as they are “quite an arty bunch” according to Goldierocks. They design their own Album art, and have “cool hand-drawn visuals” during their shows. The Afriquoi Mix was chosen as an exclusive mix for one of the weeks in May. Afriquoi is a group of musicians from all around the world from; Zimbabwe, Gambia, Algeria, France and Botswana, but are all based in London. The members of the Afriquoi group take UK dance styles such as dubstep and UK funky, and end up fusing them with African rhythms, coming up with their own unique style.

FOOD Tasting
Get your taste buds rowdy at Rowdy Taco Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine have finally made their way to Kuwait in style. Rowdy Tacos, is now ready to get you fed and rowdy 24/7. At Rowdy Taco they believe there is no better time for a taco than right now. That’s right, morning, day or night, ever since Rowdy Taco has opened its doors it hasn’t closed them, and it’s been providing the best tacos Kuwait has seen.
you get your fish grilled or crispy, the fish is cooked to perfection. The taste of the fish blends well with chipotle crema, which adds a little kick of heat and the red cabbage and cilantro add a touch of freshness to every bite.
The assortment of tacos ranges from breakfast tacos, Halal beef, chicken, lamb, fish and shrimp, as well as some sweet desserts. CityPages had the pleasure to come taste some of these and we started the meal with some tasty tacos.
The Baja Shrimp taco also comes with the option of having your shrimp grilled or crispy and it’s also served with red cabbage and cilantro, but it has a creamy baja sauce. Make sure to take the lemon off the taco and squirt it all over, the sourness brightens up the flavors and enhances the shrimp flavor. You will like how all the flavors combine seeping trough your taste buds harmoniously.
The Beef Fajita, with tender juicy pieces of 100 percent Certified Angus beef had grilled onions, which still had some crunchy consistency to them. There was a generous portion of shredded cheddar, sour cream and cilantro to complete it. The Chicken Fajita had some good juicy chicken pieces covered by their freshly made pico de gallo and cilantro, very simple, and yet very tasty. Fish tacos are hard to come by, and Rowdy Taco is one of those places. Whether www.citypageskuwait.com
Their signature Rowdy Taco, made with tender lamb all rubbed up with spicy achiote paste, and served with pickled pineapples, onions and cilantro is a must try. The lamb just melts in your mouth, making it easy to bite and savor the spiciness mixing with the sweetness of the pineapples, along with the onions and cilantro… Mouthwatering.

{Review/Food} The Chicken Taco has grilled, yet juicy, pieces chicken seasoned with Mexican spices, served along onions, mushrooms, peppers and melted Monterrey Jack cheese. This creamy, juicy creation is a favorite among customers. Rowdy Taco also has some salads, which still hold the Mexican and Tex-Mex flavors in a healthier, but tasty way. Try their San Antonio Salad, made fresh with mixed greens, cotija cheese, dates and pumpkins seeds with cilantro vinaigrette. This fun combination has some exiting flavors. Who would have thought dates and cilantro would ever meet in a plate in such a pleasant way. Although all tacos are great just as they come, customers can enhance their flavors by adding their freshly homemade sides. Their Salsa, made fresh with red tomatoes is hand made to ensure tomatoes don’t loose their consistency and control the flavors better. It’s chunky yet runny to make sure each nacho gets a hold of their juices and every bite has a good piece of tomato. Their Pico de Gallo is also made fresh everyday. This traditional Mexican pico is made with fresh tomatoes, little cubed diced onions, and the greenest freshest cilantro and lime juice to brighten up the flavors. This is a “must add” to all their tacos. Rowdy Taco also has Black Beans, these house made black beans are mixed with pico de gallo, chipotle peppers, and fresh seasonings. Goes well with the beef and chicken tacos to add an earthy yet spicy flavor to them. Like any Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant, Guacamole is a must, but not everyone knows how to make a good Guacamole. Luckily, Rowdy Taco knows a good guacamole is always best when it’s hand made, with the finest just ripe avocados and mixed with fresh tomatoes, onion, and lime juice. This guacamole is good in all tacos, salads and as a good starter with the nachos. The guacamole is super creamy with just the right amount of tomatoes, onions and lime juice to add to the avocado flavor. Their Habanera Sauce is a must try for the daring. Mixed with carrots and Habanero based sauced, this sauce is sweet and very spicy. This is great for the brave spicy lovers out there. Also, if you are just looking for a little heat, yet some creaminess to scale down the spiciness, the Spicy Queso sauce is the right choice. Made with traditional Mexican melted cheese and chile peppers, the Spicy Queso sauce is a must try, your hidden spicy taste bud lovers will jump out and thank you for the thrilling experience. In all, the meal was an amazing experience. It’s nice to find a restaurant, which focuses on the quality of bringing each meal fresh and home made daily.

Next time you are feeling adventurous and hungry, make a trip out to one of the Rowdy Tacos locations, on Alia and Ghalia Towers. Their quick service, flavorful menu and friendly staff will make sure you come back, morning, day or night. Rowdy Taco made sure people get rowdy, catering to every palate, anytime of the day.

Five burgers, the newest sought-out creations of Applebee’s Looking to innovate burgers, Applebee’s succeeds and introduces four new creations, along with an all-star burger. These five burgers are all part of the restaurant’s newest flavorful campaign, “Real Burgers,” and CityPages was there to give you the mouth-watering run-down. There are three characteristics any good burger must have. The meat must be juicy. The bun must not be soggy, and the fries must be crunchy at first bite and yet very tender on the inside — Applebee’s “Real Burgers” did not disappoint. It’s always a pleasure to sit at Applebee’s and anxiously wait on their food, and this time the main event were their “Real Burgers,” which were preceded by two appetizers and a salad. Their Potato Twisters came first, on flat long white dish; with the chips sitting on one side and their Queso Blanco sauce, garnished with fresh Pico de Gallo, was lying on a little bowl next to chips. I like how this is served, because it’s up to you how much or how little you want of the creamy sauce on your chips. Next came their appetizer platter, full with a creamy artichoke/spinach dip with parmesan cheese, tortilla chips, triangles of quesadillas, which were so cheesy, like the mozzarella sticks with their marinara sauce, accompanied with boneless wings and blue cheese sauce. Then came the Fiesta Chicken Chopped Salad, and it quickly turned into our favorite thus far, and my favorite salad to date. The salad was refreshing, and very tasty. It came with black bean corn salsa, roasted red peppers and onions, shredded www.citypageskuwait.com

tortilla strips, white cheddar and a spicy jalapeño dressing covering juicy little cubes of chicken, all tossed together and mounded nicely on a bed of chopped lettuce. Then, it was time for the featured culinary presentations, the burgers. Comprising Applebee’s newest campaign, “Real Burgers,” are five burgers, all with an especial characteristic appealing to the various palates. The first one, the “Cowboy Burger” has been an all-star on their menu as a favorite among customers. The reaming four, Tuscan Portobello Burger, Gaucho Burger, Chicken Sandwich with Honey Pepper, and the Korean Short Rib Sandwich, are the newest additions to the Applebee’s food family. These four new creations were the top four burgers from Lead Tasters because of their taste and creativity. The Cowboy Burger, strong and rugged from all angles, has 100 percent juicy beef, freshly pressed and grilled. The burger is topped with melted white cheddar cheese, under crispy onion stings and smoked beef bacon. The combination of the beef, bacon, cheese, onions, fresh veggies, and BBQ sauce, is an amazing explosion of flavor in your mouth. The Tuscan Portobello Burger, classy and healthy, draws your appetite’s focus on the crispy onions, big slices of the Portobello mushroom, beef bacon bits, topped with sun-dried tomato sauce. This is one liked burger because of its light earthy yet mouth filling taste. The Gaucho Burger, inspired by the best Latin flavors, brings together a mix of Chipotle lime seasoning on its juicy beef patty, accompanied with herb cream cheese, Swiss cheese and grilled onions. This burger became a favorite because of its juicy burger and combination of flavors. Muy bien! The Chicken Sandwich with Honey Pepper brings crispness and a hit of sweetness to every bite. The crisped chicken breast is nicely breaded and freshly fried at the right temperature to quickly crisp the outside while maintain a juicy chicken on the inside. The chicken, along with the red onions, fresh lettuce and tomato all came together and were nicely complemented with the honey pepper sauce, which had enough pepper to add a final pop.

Last, but not least, the Korean Short Rib Sandwich. The adventurous palate to try this one will be surprised at how great and soft each bite feels, make sure to smoosh down the sandwich so you get all the short rib goodness all over your bun. All very good burgers, but no meal is complete without dessert. This time we tried their Triple Chocolate Meltdown, which came with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream to compliment the moist chocolate cake, which holds molten chocolate on its inside. This little volcano of flavor is surely going to erupt with chocolate goodness in your mouth. We ended our meal with their Maple Butter Blondie. This exiting dynamic dessert is served on a moist pudding like cake, made with caramel and maple flavors with chocolate pieces, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream sprinkled with walnuts. As their signature Blondie sauce is poured on top, the hot skillet meets the sauce creating a crackling sound, which enhances the sweet aroma emanating from the dessert. After such a great feast, from the entrees, the salad, the burgers, and the dessert, it’s evident when Applebee’s opens its doors, it also open your appetite and introduces your palate to new flavors. The meats were 100 percent beef, and juicy, like the crispy chicken. The buns were all nicely toasted, holding the burgers in place, and their fries were all well seasoned, crispy and soft on every bite, completing the burger trifecta. It’s no wonder why these artistic, mouth-watering, burgers are Applebee’s most sought-after creations. Head out to Applebee’s, try one or try them all, and through Instagram, let us know which is your favorite. This invitation is an offer your taste buds won’t want to miss. June 2013

The Difference between Arabic & Western Fragrances
الفرق بني العطور العربية و العطور الغربية
Arabic fragrance industry goes back perhaps thousands of years, they’ve been selling fragrances (frankincense, myrrh and more) before even the Roman empire. And the Western especially French fragrances or perfumes are much more recent, three or four hundred years ago, and real French perfumery started in the late nineteenth century, but before that it was simple essences of no outcome.

When you smell the Arabic fragrances you will feel and discover that it is simple accord scent with superb materials, in oil: Oud, Rose being the most famous, Jasmine, Dark Musk, Sandalwood, Saffron, and Ambergris. It is not only the oil fragrances that the Arabic industry experience in but also the excel at perfuming via smoke or are we call it “Bukhour” which contains wonderful Ouds and resins.
Western fragrance industry in most times is based on natural artificial mixes, where an abstract structure (chypre, fougere, etc.) covers the naturals that give freshness & richness to the body. The Western fragrances are popular in the chemicals natural perfumery to meet the development of the fashion of the market demand. CRYOLIPOLYSIS: A NEW TOOL TO FIGHT FAT I visite the Yiaco Apollo Medical Center and wanted to know more about Cryolipolysis - the new tool to fight fat. I met with Dr. Ruchira Vasudeva who is a Specialist Dermatologist and Laser at the center and she explained: You must have noticed red cheeks of small kids after they have enjoyed sucking their Popsicle. This happens because the fat in their cheeks gets inflamed from the cold popsicle. This observation, that fat is more sensitive to cold temperatures than water based tissues led to the development of cryolipolysis. The procedure of cryolipolysis is very comfortable and safe. A suction cup is applied to the selected area for about 30-60 minutes to cool it to the desired temperature which is lower than the body temperature and always above freezing point to protect the water based tissues. The patient feels slight tingling sensation when the cooling begins but as the cooling progresses it is comfortable enough to watch television, read a book or even take a nap. At the end of the procedure, the treated area is red, numb and a little swollen. Swelling and redness are transitory and fade in a few hours. Numbness can persist www.citypageskuwait.com

longer and sometimes some bruising may occur, both of which resolve spontaneously over a few days. The cooling of the tissue selectively injures the fat as it is more sensitive to cold than water. Thus fat cells are damaged or destroyed. These dead or non functional cells are then removed from the body over a period of few days. To extrapolate this clinically, after the initial redness and swelling subsides, the patient notices a gradual reduction in the fat layer over a few weeks. As much as 25% fat can be destroyed after a single session. This fat is permanently gone unless the person regains an enormous amount of weight. Various other non invasive methods to remove fat like cavitation, ultrasound, infrared lasers and radiofrequency are available. All of them have their advantages and limitations. Overall they are more labor intensive and require more sessions. Cryolipolysis is a relatively new technology and so far has grown in popularity due to its user friendly nature and satisfactory results. Though Cryolipolysis works well on localized fat deposits, it is not a tool for weight reduction, cellulite reduction or tightening as it is specific to the fat tissue. It can be used safely for almost everybody provided they have the right indication for treatment. At YIACO Apollo medical center we have recently added this technology to our armamentarium of non invasive devices for body contouring and trained staff is available to offer these services to our valued customers. ROLLS-ROYCE
WRAITH The most powerful and dynamic Rolls-Royce in history
www.citypageskuwait.com
Rolls-Royce Chairman and BMW Group board member Harald Krüger added the following: “The BMW Group today reconfirms its full commitment to the future of Rolls-Royce. Growth and a prosperous future lie ahead thanks to continued investment, careful brand stewardship and the launch of groundbreaking new models like Rolls-Royce Wraith, a magnificent addition to the product range.” In profile, Wraith’s sweeping fastback design gives the car its unique character. Bold lines, tension in the panels and a raked rear screen evoke the image of a world class athlete poised in the starting blocks. Further expression of dynamic intent can be seen in Wraith’s deeply recessed grille, wide rear track and dramatic two-tone presentation. expanses of wood called Canadel Panelling. Named after the famous cove in the South of France where Sir Henry Royce and his design and engineering teams spent their winters, this contemporary and tactile finish sweeps through the interior, cosseting four occupants in a space bathed in light and warmth. The interior ambiance is complemented by Starlight Headliner, a Bespoke feature available beyond Phantom family cars for the first time. 1,340 fibre optic lamps are handwoven into the roof lining to give the impression of a glittering, starry night sky. Performance delivers on the promise of Wraith’s styling. Power delivery is effortless, but dramatic, thanks to a V12 engine married to 8-speed automatic ZF transmission. 624 bhp / 465kW is available to the driver while the 0-60 mph sprint is achieved in 4.4 seconds, compared with 563 bhp and 0-60 in 4.7 seconds for Ghost. From 1,500 rpm 800 Nm of torque is available (780 Nm for Ghost), while a wide rear track, shorter wheelbase and lower roof height further contribute to the most powerful, involving driving experience of any Rolls-Royce in history. The car’s suspension has also been tuned to minimise body roll and discreetly amplify feedback when cornering; while steering weight is heavier at high speeds and lighter at low speeds adding to the spirited drive. improvements have been achieved with absolutely no compromise to the sensation of riding on a bed of air. Furthermore, the debut of Satellite Aided Transmission (SAT) technology takes the powertrain to a new level of effortless delivery, one that perfectly suits the RollsRoyce brand. Satellite Aided Transmission uses GPS data to see beyond what the driver sees; it anticipates his next move based on location and current driving style, then selects the most appropriate gear for the terrain ahead. Corners, motorway junctions and roundabouts are all anticipated in advance meaning Wraith is constantly poised to deliver on its promise of performance. A more polished, effortless driving experience and even better response brings a new, more dynamic dimension to the famous Rolls-Royce trait, waftability. For over a century a Rolls-Royce motor car has featured technologies designed to support occupants discreetly, delivering a peerless driving experience epitomised by the term ‘effortlessness’. In every RollsRoyce these assist the driver when called upon, but are prepared to return without fuss to the background when no longer required. Advances in mechanical and electrical technology deliver systems like head-up display, adaptive headlights and Wraith’s keyless opening boot. But improvements in connectivity have taken the humanmachine interface to a new level of sophistication, a suite of aids that could be likened to a contemporary on-board valet. Voice activation commands, for example, come with a onetouch call button located on the steering wheel.
www.citypageskuwait.com
A destination no longer requires manual input from a navigation menu and route assistance begins immediately, on-screen and via audio guidance following a voice command such as “navigate to Piccadilly in London.” Additional improvements in communications come in the design and functionality of the elegant Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller. This allows navigation through on-screen functions using a touch pad that features pinch and pull functionality to echo smart phone usage. Letters can also be ‘drawn’ onto the pad by hand rather than by scrolling through a series of available characters onscreen. In Europe, Wraith will be priced at c. €245k. Confirmation and further pricing details in all markets will be revealed later in the year. First deliveries of Wraith will be made to customers in the final quarter of 2013.

Jaguar Watches Now Available At 10:10, Avenues Mall, Phase III Swiss watchmaker Peter Haas founded the JAGUAR brand in 1938. In doing so he set himself a mission: to imbue each of his collections with the same effortless strength and pedigree of the Jaguar, the powerful feline which incarnates the savage beauty of the Savannah. Like the jaguar of the Savannah, the brand has survived through time and evolution by continuously adapting to its environment. With its eyes fixed firmly on the future, JAGUAR now pays homage to its founders in a celebration of the company’s heritage, its watchmaking expertise and its distinctive style. NEW MODELS J650/1, J652/1, J653/1 This Swiss-made chronograph makes a powerful aesthetic statement with its meticulous finish and flawless functionality. Retaining a strong identity, it fits perfectly in the Jaguar collection. Taken as a whole, the indications are emphasized by a sporting, yet elegant design: the dial features a matt base, brushed-finished minute and hour counters, and circular markings on the second counter. The date appears in a novel aperture with a triangular outline that takes its cue from the skeletonized hands of the counters and the design of the indices. The bezel is secured by means of six nuts. This graphical element is picked up by the finely wrought lugs. The luminous material insets and the layout and red of the dial ensure perfect readability. The case is available in a number of finishes - rose gold colour sporting a black bezel, all-steel, and bi-coloured models.

Kuwaiti fencing champions Balsam and Lulwa Al Ayoub visit Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre in Switzerland Balsam and Lulwa Al Ayoub, Kuwaiti fencing champions and friends of Jaeger-LeCoultre, visited the brand’s manufacturing workshops, testifying to 180 years of continuous development on a single site and the unique integration of all skills under one roof. Welcomed by Jaeger-LeCoultre CEO Jerome Lambert, the sisters discovered different stages of watch manufacturing, decoration and assembly. Impressed by the work of watchmakers that requires an incredible amount of expertise and precision, Balsam and Lulwa particularly admired gem setting techniques that went into making the Rendez-Vous, a new ladies High Jewellery watch by Jaeger-LeCoultre. “Dedication and talent were all around us when walked inside the Manufacture. Committed experts who are eager to create the best watches. The sharpness of the time in the watch is almost a reflection of a sword cutting to a touché!” – said Lulwa Al Ayoub. Behind the regular beat of its Manufacture movement lies a concentrated blend of the creativity that has pervaded the history of the Grande Maison. These feminine creations continue to forge the legend of Jaeger-LeCoultre and testify to the Manufacture’s amazing creative liberty. More than a watch, the Rendez-Vous line embodies a free-spirited and spontaneous personality that is constantly reinvented and perpetually surprising. Women, fencers and social entrepreneurs, the two Kuwaiti sisters have managed to conduct their life and projects with determination and passion. They have been supporting the re-invention of the lives of the women in Kuwait and worldwide: women expression and empowerment through sport and development. This philosophy is in the heart of Jaeger-LeCoultre Rendez-Vous line, created for free-spirited personalities. “Being in the historical Manufacture of Jaeger-LeCoultre gave us a unique experience. We made the connection between the precision of fencing and time” – said Balsam Al Ayoub. www.citypageskuwait.com

{Horoscopes}
Horoscopes & Famous Birthdays June is one of those "through a glass darkly" months. Decisions made, especially on or around June 8, could be tinged with vague energy. This hazy energy is beamed by hazy Neptune ensnared with the New Moon in the sign of slick-talking Gemini. The good news for you is that on June 25 and for the next twelve months following this date, the star of big business, Jupiter, is in Cancer - the sign of big business. This is the beginning of an economic upsurge, and the housing market in particular could feel the financial revival. Try not to sign anything on this propitious day unless you put a magnifying glass to the fine print.
ARIES
(March 21 - April 19)
TAURUS
(April 20 - May 20)
You will be obsessed with learning new skills and gathering information during the next few weeks. You could spend a lot of time online, at the library, or talking to people in your community. You'll be busy taking classes or attending seminars and be energized by interesting conversations. You will make new contacts that enrich your life in some way during the current transits in Gemini. Uranus in your sign will ensure that nothing you do will be predictable or boring. Others may perceive your behavior and demeanor as odd or eccentric. Change your routine frequently and be open to new experiences.
Several planets in Gemini will help to spotlight the need for more information on financial planning and money management this month. This would be a good time to talk to someone knowledgeable and helpful. You might have to do some homework to find the right person to explain things in layman's terms and work with you to create a practical plan. Gemini isn't in a comfortable relationship with your sign, and this will mean that you'll have to make adjustments to embrace a new attitude about money and material things. You will socialize with your extended family later in the month.
Communication will be very important this month, whether you're in a one-on-one conversation, writing a blog, or giving a presentation. You will be witty, sharp, and articulate, ensuring that others will listen to what you have to say. You'll make many new connections and express your thoughts. With several planets in Gemini and your travel and education sector, you will seek to broaden your knowledge and desire to take a trip. If this is within your means, you'll learn a lot and enjoy yourself. If you have to stay home, read about other places and cultures. Career matters will be stressful later in the month.
(September 23 - October 22)

4th June
Responsibilities this month will be as heavy as they've been over the past months. If you make a commitment, be sure to follow through. You will be a source of support to others by simply being a good listener. Shared resources and joint finances will be a large focus during the first few weeks. Teamwork and communication will be important for making progress and resolving issues. If you have loans or claims to set up or settle, this would be a good time to work with professionals and get advice. You might take a trip or decide to enroll in an educational program during the latter part of the month.
GEMINI There will be plenty of activity in your sign, bringing out your curiosity and love of social interaction and knowledge. You'll be busy, have several projects going at once, and meet many new people. You'll be in your element and feel confident. A New Moon in your sign on June 8 will bring a fresh start and new attitude. Keep an open mind and focus on new objectives. You will be motivated to make changes and have faith in the future. With Neptune in Pisces, be careful of so-called friends who may not be trustworthy.

LEO
(July 23 - August 22)

(August 23 - September 22)
Now you will look within and examine your emotions and motivations. If you have any troubling issues, this would be a good time talk to a therapist and explore your psyche. If that isn't your thing, try to write down your thoughts in a journal and analyze what's at the root of your fears and insecurities. This may not be a comfortable process, but you will benefit from some soul searching or talking it out. Pluto opposite your sign will continue to bring chaos and transformation regarding your relationships. Career matters will be unpredictable again this month.
You will be at the center of time spent with friends this month. Concentrate on catching up, discussing relationships and goals, and having a few laughs. Try to keep things light and lively. Avoid controversial subjects and painful topics. Your wit and charm will entertain and engage others. Take the time to listen and be supportive. Motivate your friends and acquaintances to take some risks. Saturn in Leo will make life challenging at home or when dealing with a close family member. Added responsibilities could keep you from fully enjoying yourself. Uranus in Aries will bring restlessness and impulsiveness.
LIBRA
Work will be a source of stress and worry this month, and you might not feel productive. Too many demands and distractions could lead to mistakes and feeling like you're being pulled in many directions at once. It will be really important to stay organized and keep good records because you might miss important details or forget about commitments. Communicate clearly with co-workers and management if you want good results. The emphasis will be on relationships and dealing with the public later in the month. You could be critical of others or feel superior, so watch what you say and give constructive feedback.

Communication will be great with most people you deal with this month, especially if you have a romantic partner. You'll be willing to listen, compromise, and negotiate important matters. There could be some minor bickering, but you'll be able to resolve issues if you can be willing to cooperate and consider the wishes of your partner. Make time for conversation and be affectionate and supportive. This will go a long way toward improving your relationship. Intimacy will be satisfying during the latter part of the month whether you're in a relationship or not.
You'll have an active social life this month, and love and romance will be highlighted. You'll spend time with someone you love and care about, and intimacy will heat up as a result. It will be easy to share your feelings and be assertive, but you'll also respect the other person and strive to please. If you're single, you might make the first move with someone special. If you're already in a relationship, carve out time to talk and rekindle that spark. Concerns about work will emerge during the latter part of the month, and you might have to give up personal time.

(October 23 - November 21)
SAGITTARIUS
(November 22 - December 21)
CAPRICORN
(December 22 - January 19)
AQUARIUS
(January 20 - February 18)
You could continue to suffer from uneasiness and a lack of selfconfidence with Neptune in Pisces opposite your sign. This planet will make you vulnerable and bring an inability to focus. This won't be comfortable for you, and it will require more patience and self-forgiveness than usual. You'll have some errors in judgment and may be forgetful at times, but this won't be the end of the world. A large group of planets in Gemini this month will help you network and make valuable contacts, but you might feel overwhelmed if you meet too many people in a short period of time.
You will be highly sensitive and emotional and continue to do some soul searching this month. You will also have to relate to the outside world and your loved ones at the same time. Family matters or life at home could be stressful and distracting. Do your best to communicate your feelings without getting angry or defensive. Listen to others and be willing to cooperate. You might feel like a victim most of the time, but you have the power to change things. Your love life will be interesting during the last part of the month. If you're single, you may meet someone new.
