As we enter the last quarter of the year there is always a certain buzz, and this year is no different. The events calendar fills up quite quickly; there is certainly plenty to keep us occupied this month.

October is the Breast Cancer Awareness month and like always, we at CityPages are all set to spread the awareness and play our part in saving lives. This year, we wanted to do something different and decided to take it a step further by not only spreading the awareness but also offering free 15 breast cancer screening tests to those women who have been asked by their doctors to do so.

There is so much happening at CityPages and I am really excited about everything. This month, we have a special gift for all our readers - The Medical Supplement. We decided to bring you this special supplement that could stay with you at your home or office and provide you useful health related information whenever you need it. Make sure to read and benefit from it and also spread it to your friends and loved ones.

This month, we have two new segments; "Diary of a Nutritionista" by Sana Abdul Hamid and "Know about your birthstone" by Oussama T. Hussein. Both these segments are very interesting and I am sure you will love reading them regularly.

We have some very interesting interviews lined up for you in this issue. We have the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Tahir Sultan on his latest participation at the London Fashion Week. Our team member Abrar AlZenkawi brings you an interview with another interesting fashion designer - Charbel Zoe, who is an upcoming designers to many hollywood celebrities.

Also interviewed in this issue is the young Alia AlJarallah who we bring you all the way from New York. Alia is all set to putting her culinary passion to test by working at the best restaurants.

Keep with our health and fitness theme for the month, we bring you Sami AlBader - a well know clinical and community dietitian who is also our cover personality this month. We also interviewed Camilla Ayrton who tells us about her outlook on how a gym experience should be. Last but not the least, we also interviewed Dr. Athary AlFadhli - a licensed psychotherapist providing a fresh start for the mind.

Eid Mubarak I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” ~L.M. Montgomery, With the eve of October now we are in the last quarter of 2013 and I hope and expect that this quarter will be as great as the previous three quarters of this year. During this month plenty of things are happening around. Some of you will be planning to travel during Eid Holidays while some will be happy in nests. For your Eid shopping we have come up with plenty of options for you in our Fashion section.

While the weather is changing, it is necessary to keep yourself safe from this change. Take care of your health and keeping this in mind CityPages is having a special supplement with reference to medical and health which I do believe will be really helpful for all of your family. This month is a very special one for me as it marks my one-year anniversary at CityPages and I have to say it’s been an incredible whirlwind for myself and the entire team which now consists of a fantastic mix of old and new contributors. In just twelve months since the new collaboration between myself, Jameel Arif our CEE and Managing Editor Abeer AbdulJalil, we have managed to create quite the buzz, and am pretty sure that the CP brand name now carries equity.

On another note, it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month; thank goodness it exits to remind us special ladies to get checked, and to help refresh our commitment to our health and well being since so many people depend on us in life. Don’t wait, as it really is true that EARLY DETECTION IS THE BEST CURE. We celebrate our commitment by going pink of course, and I must say our logo looks great in feminine colors!

Coincidentally it is also our health supplement month, where our contributors went all out with their columns on health and fitness. Our content is always what we are mostly commended on and we remain dedicated to getting the most out of our expert contributors so that you can benefit from reading CityPages.

This month led us on various jaunts to events, launches, and interviews and I must say I was quite impressed with Cyrine Abdelnour whom I had a meet and greet with for my monthly segment, what a lovely woman! Read about her rise to fame in her native Lebanon.

On the cover this month is the wonderful Sami AlBader who has joined Taiba Hospital’s team, he talks about healthy living, we are always grateful for any information we receive on that subject!

You Already Have What You Want!

I love writing lists. Grocery lists, creative writing lists, daily “to-do” lists. I especially love writing “desire lists” and I encourage my clients to do the same. I tell them that there is nothing wrong with writing a “Want more” list. Articulate it to your self, write it down, pull it out of your heart and gut and write it on paper or screen.

There is something magical about the organic task of writing down what you want that makes it just a little more real, more tangible. It turns it from a belief that its impossible, to a feeling that says it is in fact possible!

Writing a “desire list” somehow puts your dream right there, on paper, living, breathing in front of you. On that paper, your dream stares back at you with hope and possibility, asking you “can we stay together?” and begging you to “make me happen”.

Now that you wrote it down, fold it up, tuck it away, all the while trying to make it happen. Every now and then, take it out again, let it wink at you from that paper and hear your dream talking to you “I am here, make me happen. We are SO meant to be!”

Now that you are thinking of your desire list, what would be on it? More money? More love? More time? Compassion? Freedom? Comfort? May be your list looks something like this: “I want to make more money this year and I want to spend more time with my kids”. There is no right or wrong, no one is judging you for what you put on your own paper; it is your dream, your paper and you and only you will decide.

Now, just because you wrote it does not mean it will happen, but denying even to your self that you want these things will not help either; so you might as well just enjoy it for what it is and EMBRACE it.

Is a desire list all it will take? Is it all rosy and foul proof?

No its not. There is actually a twist to it. Being focused on what you want can distract you from what is already working in our life. Take notice of how affluent you already are, doing so will guarantee you to thrive more. With that being said there’s only one kind of list I like more than a desire list: A gratitude list (you should have seen it coming!).

Gratitude creates more reasons to be grateful, planning for love makes you feel lovable, aiming for power gets your internal power grid charged up. And so it goes, your gratitude list will aid your desire list, and who knows, you might find out you already have what you are looking for!

Go through your desire list and next to each one think about where you already have evidence of it in your life. You might have written “I want to earn more money per month”, might look like this: “That 50 KD a month cable plan? I probably don’t need it. I’m going to downgrade to the 20KD a month plan and that will save me at least 30KD! My friend Dana treated for dinner last night and that saved me 40 KD. I started carpooling with my friend Nour and now I save at least 20 KD of gas a month. My favorite shampoo + conditioner was on sale this weekend!

Cha-ching! Those pair of shoes I have my eye on just went on sale for Eid – extra money in my wallet!”

Search the landscape of your life for proof that your desires are already alive and well or easily encouraged.

Doing so: 1.Helps you realize that you are already on your way to abundance!

2.Takes the desperate charge out of your goals and desires. Less desperation and more gratitude = more clarity of mind and heart.

The ability to recognize what is already working is power playing. The intention to celebrate not only what you want more of, but what you already have is not just where you will be….but who you will be.

Your other desire looked somewhat like this: “I want to spend more time playing with my children this summer.”

Gratitude says: Every Friday morning I’m going to let them pick their favorite breakfast and we will make it together. Yousef always wants to read with me at night and too often I rush through it because I’m tired…I will make an effort to clean the dinner dishes AFTER I read with him instead of before.

That will guarantee me more energy for our time together!

Prepare for a great birth

You are pregnant…Congratulations! As you sift through all of the well-meaning advice you are probably already receiving from family, friends, (and even strangers!), consider the following tips to help you find the resources you need and make preparations for a healthy and satisfying birth.

Attend a Childbirth Preparation Class and write a Birth Plan. Would you run a marathon without preparing for it? Getting some training is essential! In a childbirth class, you will learn about healthy lifestyle changes for pregnancy, learn about and prepare for birth, and build a support network of other couples going through similar experiences. This is also a great place to ask questions (if you don’t know what questions to ask, you will by the end of class!), share experiences, and examine your own thoughts and feelings about pregnancy, birth, and parenthood.

Take care of yourself. You are growing a new human being! Eat well, exercise regularly, rest sufficiently, and seek out social support. Women benefit from the social support of other women during this special time.

Get to know your birthplace. Take the full hospital tour and ask lots of questions! Visit the labor, delivery, and recovery rooms. Explore. Ask about what resources are available. Do they have a bath or shower to labor in? Do they have birthing balls, birthing stools, or squatting bars? Also ask questions about hospital standard care procedures. What are their routine procedures for laboring mothers - continuous or intermittent fetal monitoring? Heplock or continuous IV fluids? What are their episiotomy or augmentation rates for first time mothers? What are their primary cesarean or VBAC rates? What is their postpartum care and newborn procedures? How do they support breastfeeding - do they have 24-hour lactation consultants available? Do they support mother-baby friendly policies like rooming in or breastfeeding on demand? Also - ask for copies of the pre-admittance papers. Go over them carefully, ask questions, and fill them out before you go into labor. Once you know how your hospital operates, you will be able to work better with your primary care provider and the hospital

staff.

Organize your birth team. Labor and childbirth works best when mothers are surrounded by a supportive and cohesive team. Discuss with your husband who do you want to be there with you at the birth. Make sure that everyone there understands your wishes and supports them. Consider hiring a doula - an experienced and trained woman who can provide emotional and physical support for you during labor; in addition, a doula can be an advocate for you and help your husband or other family member know what to do during labor.

Review your Birth Plan with your care providers. An obvious member of your team is your doctor (or midwife if you are birthing outside of Kuwait), your pediatrician, and your nurses. Make sure to go over any concerns or questions with your care providers before labor begins so that you are all on the same page. Hopefully, this will be a confidence building interaction as you hear your care providers offer support and encouragement for your wishes.

In addition, all hospitals have a “Patient’s Rights and Responsibilities” document. Read through it. It is important for you to understand that you have the right to understand and consent to any procedure before it begins. This is called Informed Consent.

You also have the right to hear about any alternative treatments or steps, and the right to refuse any or all of them. This is called Informed Refusal. Ultimately, you are responsible for your own care.

Plan to labor at home in addition to the hospital. Most women labor best in the privacy of their own home, so stay home as long as possible before going to the hospital. While at home you can establish an intuitive and trusting rhythm and ritual to your birth that you can take with you when it is time

to transfer to the hospital. You can also ensure that you are in an active labor pattern, and increase your confidence in coping with your labor.

Enlist the support of friends and family for your recovery. After your birth, the most important thing is for you and your baby to bond, establish successful breastfeeding patterns, and recover from labor. Parties, receptions, and social obligations should take a back seat. They can wait. Ask your friends and family to help support you and your baby by keeping their visits brief, providing you with privacy as you establish nursing, and offering to do laundry, provide meals, or tidy up so that you can rest. These first few weeks with your baby are precious. Savor them.

Human Papillomavirus Vaccines (HPV)

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are a group of more than 150 related viruses.

They are called papillomaviruses because certain types may cause warts, or papillomas, which are benign (noncancerous) growths. Some types of HPV are associated with certain types of cancer. These are called "high-risk", oncogenic, or carcinogenic HPVs. Of more than 150 types of HPV, more than 40 types can be passed from one person to another. HPV is spread by skin-to-skin contact. Transmission can occur in the genitals, anal, or oral regions. Although HPVs are usually transmitted sexually, we cannot say for certain when or how the infection occurred.

Most HPV infections occur without any symptoms and go away without any treatment over the course of a few years. However, HPV infections sometimes persist for many years, with or without causing detectable cell abnormalities.

Infection with high-risk HPV is the major cause of cervical cancer. Almost all women will have an HPV infection at some point, but very few will develop cervical cancer. The immune system of most women will usually suppress or eliminate HPVs. Only HPV infections that are persistent (do not go away over many years) can lead to cervical cancer. High-risk HPV types also cause most anal cancers. Infection with highrisk HPV is also known to cause some cancers of the oropharynx, vulva, vagina, and penis.

The vaccine (Gardasil) is produced

by Merck & Co. Inc. It is called a quadrivalent vaccine because it protects against four HPV types: 6, 11, 16, and 18. Gardasil is given through a series of three injections into muscle tissue over a 6-month period.

The other vaccine (Cervarix) is produced by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).

It is called a bivalent vaccine because it targets two HPV types: 16 and 18. This vaccine is also given in three doses over a 6-month period. The FDA has approved Cervarix for use in females ages 9 to 25 for the prevention of cervical cancer caused by HPV types 16 and 18.

Because the vaccines do not protect against all HPV infections that cause cervical cancer, it is important for vaccinated women to continue to undergo cervical cancer screening. There could be some future changes in recommendations for

vaccinated women.

The HPV vaccines work like other immunizations that guard against viral infections.

The investigators hypothesized that the unique surface components of HPV might create an antibody response that is capable of protecting the body against infection, and that these components could be used to form the basis of a vaccine.

Although HPV vaccines can help prevent future HPV infection, they do not help eliminate existing HPV infections.

Both Gardasil and Cervarix are proven to be effective only if given before infection with HPV occurs, so it is recommended that they be given before an individual is sexually active.

For females, it is recommended that Gardasil or Cervarix vaccination be given routinely at ages 11 or 12, although the series may be started for girls as early as 9 years of age.

Vaccination is also recommended for girls and women ages 13 to 26 who have not been vaccinated already or who did not complete the three-dose series. If a woman reaches the age of 26 before completing the three-dose series, the recommendations say that she can still receive the remaining doses.

Although Gardasil and Cervarix have been found to be generally safe when given to people who are already infected with HPV, the vaccines do not treat infection and they provide maximum benefit if a person receives them before he or she is sexually active.

If someone infected with HPV will still get residual benefit from vaccination, even if he or she has already been infected with one or more of the types included in the vaccines.

These vaccines do not protect against all HPV types that can cause cancer, Pap tests continue to be essential to detect cervical cancers and precancerous changes. In addition, Pap tests are critically important for women who have not been vaccinated or who are already infected with HPV. There could be future changes in screening recommendations for vaccinated women.

Aviator Glasses

Erika Habig

Erika Habig is an optometrist and contact lens specialist at International Optique. She studied at the Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, Germany and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Optometry and Dispensing Optics.

Since their invention in the 1930s, aviator sunglasses have been a prominent figure in the eyewear fashion industry. From Hollywood celebrities to artists and designers, aviator glasses are popular among all generations. However, the famed sunglasses have a more practical and humble beginning.

Bausch & Lomb first developed these glasses for World War II pilots of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Although branded as “Ray-Ban”, they quickly earned the moniker “aviator glasses”, a term which today describes all sunglasses with similar designs.

The iconic tear-drop frames were made to mimic the shape of the pilot goggles, covering the maximum area around the eye. The glasses incorporate lightweight gold-plated metal with green colored anti-glare lenses, known as the G-15 glass lens. The large lenses are slightly convex, preventing as much light as possible from entering the pilot’s eyes from any angle.

The design of the aviator glasses has remained largely unchanged since its introduction in 1937. Due to the versatility of the shape, the sunglasses suit nearly every face, making it an easy choice for sunglass buyers. Over the years, many companies have begun making their own pilot shades and these are now available from almost every brand and no-name label.

Early Detection Can Save Your Life Every year millions of women are affected by breast cancer and its incidence rates have risen globally, with the highest rates in westernized countries. Reasons for this trend include change in reproductive patterns, increased screening, dietary changes, and decreased activity. The majority of women diagnosed with breast cancer will survive their disease because of progress in both earlier detection and improved treatment modalities. Hence, early detection is the best way to prevent death from breast cancer.

Early detection: Self breast exam remains an important part of early detection. Women can take the time to learn careful self-exam techniques. Annual exam with your primary care provider and annual mammogram remain our best screening tools. Annual mammograms are recommended to start at age 40 and may find 90 percent of cancers.

Self breast examination: If you find any of these signs/symptoms you should see your doctor right away.

• A lump on or inside the breast • Change in the size or shape of a breast • Long-term dimpling of the breast skin • The nipple becoming inverted • Swelling or a lump in the armpit • Any suspicious nipple discharge

What is a Mammogram?

It is an X-ray of the breast. This detects any lumps or dense areas in the breast, which may need further tests.

The majority of these lumps or dense areas are not cancers, but they should all be checked.

The further tests can

include more x-rays, an ultrasound or a biopsy. 7out of every 8 women sent for further tests do not have breast cancer.

What is a Biopsy?

A small tissue sample is taken by inserting a needle into the suspect area of the breast. This is examined under a microscope. The shape and appearance of the cells in the tissue sample reveals whether the lump is benign (i.e. non-cancerous), or cancerous.

Is early diagnosis important?

It is extremely important. 6 out of every 7 patients who are diagnosed when their breast cancer is at the early stage can be cured. However, if they are diagnosed when it has become advanced, the cure rate falls to about 1 in 7. It is extremely important to catch breast cancer at an early stage.

Who should have a test?

All women over 50 or any woman who finds a lump, or has any other symptoms of breast cancer, or has one or more close relatives diagnosed with breast cancer should be tested for breast cancer.

Myth or Truth: Is the use of deodorants linked to breast cancer?

No, there is no good evidence to support this idea. On the contrary: in a large study comparing breast cancer patients and healthy women, there was no difference found at all in their use of underarm deodorants.

Is there any link between diet and breast cancer?

Extensive research has failed to find any link between the diet and breast cancer risk, apart from fat. Studies suggest that a diet high in fat carries a slight increase in breast cancer risk.

Please introduce yourself to our readers: I am a clinical and community dietitian with 10+ years of experience in the field of food and nutrition. I have held positions in public and private hospitals, as well as private healthy food companies.

Can you please tell us about your education?

I have two bachelor degrees from Purdue University in the US, in dietetics and fitness & health. I also hold an MBA from KMBS with a minor in organization leadership and supervision.

Did you always want to be a dietitian? Who inspired you?

I was an athlete in high school and a member of the Kuwaiti national squash team. However, during my freshman year in college I gained a lot of weight and that weight gain had led me to taking a nutrition class which I loved and it was then when I decided to switch my major to nutrition.

What are the misconceptions about food that bother you the most?

Misconception that bothers me the most is how people underestimate the power of nutrition on preventing major diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.

What is a common nutrition myth that you can dispel?

Nutrition myth: I can go on a diet to lose weight and once the weight is lost then I can go back to my old eating habits...Unfortunately a healthy diet is a lifestyle and not a short term solution so if you go back to your old habits then you will put the weight back on.

What small changes can people make that will have a large impact on their health?

According to Pareto law ‘20% of what you do has an 80% impact on you’. So cut out the junk high calorie foods, switch to whole grain fiber foods instead of white refined carbohydrate, skip the soda and opt for water instead, don’t skip your breakfast and eat a healthy dinner.

Are carbs really that bad? Can you clarify Good vs. Bad carbs?

Yes, if they come from cheap refined sources such as white rice and white bread. However, if they come from whole grains such as barley, rye, quinoa, millet then No, they are not bad. Good carbs are those that provide essential nutrients and are part of a healthy diet.

What are your thoughts on vitamins and supplements?

Some people do need them however they have to be prescribed by a doctor or a dietitian.

Do you have any advice for students interested in studying nutrition?

If they love working with people and trying to make a difference in the world then nutrition is the way to go. It’s a job that helps prevent diseases and helps to treat them too.

Do you see a shift happening in public perceptions of nutrition?

Yes a major shift, 10 years ago people were less health conscious and were unaware of the role nutrition played in treating and preventing diseases.

However, today people are more into losing weight and adopting a healthier lifestyle they are also more into organic foods and quality food ingredients.

If you had to give only one piece of advice to our readers, what would it be?

Eat clean and train dirty.

What is your favorite healthy snack?

Mixed nuts and dried fruits (almonds, walnuts, goji berry – raisins and strawberries).

It’s never too late to change your fitness fate I’m only 160cm and when you’re at my wee height and you weigh-in at 74KGs with a body fat percentage of 45%, the reality of what I looked like seemed more depressing than me telling you my stats right now.

For some individuals, being overweight is a vicious catch-22.

You’re unhappy hence why you emotionally-overeat. Post-carbicide (from my own experience, no one ever binges on healthy food, sa7?), you tend to mentally beat yourself up all the more, wondering why did you binge on all that crap. Then you get even more upset at yourself and hence the food-binge ensues again.

I remember signing up to Les Mills in Auckland City, New Zealand (Les Mills is an iconic gym in NZ and is the creator of all BodyPump, BodyJam, BodyAttack, BodyCombat, BodyBalance classes) and being so proud that I finally joined a gym.

Following that, I remember being oh-so-gleeful that I was attending the gym twice a week. Gradually it progressed to three and then four times until I was pretty much going to the gym every single day.

Being in such a positive environment also gave me the opportunity to befriend like-minded individuals who like me, were on a health buzz and were my social support network. It is through them, I learnt a lot about nutrition and taking care of myself from inside out.

Yes it is great that I did lose the weight at the end but here’s something only a few people know in this country: Cancer and diabetes camp out in my family tree.

I’m anxious.

It’s the eve of the day I fly out to Hungary to participate in my first bodybuilding competition.

I’m excited but at this point in time, I’m more stressed than anything.

It’s not because I haven’t packed or prepped my plane food (yes, I unfortunately can’t eat the sodium-enriched airplane dishes at the moment as I’m on a strict nutrition regiment). Rather it’s because I haven’t done my weights session for today.

Kuwait is the fourth country I’ve lived at in this lifetime (Malaysia-New ZealandLondon-Ktown) and the only thing that seems to be a constant variable in my chaotic world, is the gym. #surprise!

Head to any country and pick a random fitness establishment and chances are, you’ll find a free weights area, a bunch of resistance machines, group fitness studios and lately perhaps a little crossfit box or MMA area to boot.

Really, nothing changes throughout the continents.

Had I always been this disciplined?

Here’s the thing. I can write you an article forcing you to go exercise as logically, it’s the best activity you’ll ever do in your life. It builds bone density, it makes you stronger, zaps bodyfat, boosts your immunity, helps mind-body connection and in a nutshell, improves the quality of your life. It is however, realistically up to you to take that first step, to want to do it.

Yes, having a Personal Trainer does help to some degree but your trainer can only push you so far without you wanting to take the lead to change your lifestyle.

Perhaps the biggest change in taking the lead of your life, of your fitness fate, is this: You’re happier.

Emotionally, socially and mentally.

I’ve trained clients now for awhile and the progress and changes I’ve seen in them from these 3 aspects are astounding and well deserved. Gone is the shyness replaced instead with quiet triumph and determination and most importantly the newly-instilled self-belief that:

Overweight and unhappy.

Anything. Is. Possible.

Heck no.

So does mental illness like Alzheimer’s. If I had continued to be in my previous poor state of health at 74KGs today, I probably would be pre-diabetic with Type2 diabetes (Type2 diabetes is more lifestyle-induced) awaiting me with open arms.

What’s more horrifying is that if the gym didn’t partially occupy my time and my lifestyle was so sedentary, I wouldn’t be surprised if I too succumbed to some mental psychosis at some point because nothing is stimulating my brain.

Movement that Matters!

It's that time of the year again. The time when the weather is the type you wish it would stay at all year long. The time when the athletic gene in you starts kicking in and you start thinking of all the exercises you want to do. All year long we use the excuse of the weather, if only it was nice out I could go walking on the sea road, breathe in the fresh air and get some exercise.

Well what are you waiting for? Just keep in mind though that if you haven’t been working out the rest of the year, now is not the time to try and do a 10 Km run on Gulf Road.

The principle of movement is the path to optimal health, depending on your lifestyle, the type of movement requirements vary. Athletes train for their sport, while stay at home moms move by simply running around the house after their kids, that in itself is a form of exercise, but what I guarantee that everyone is lacking is some form of stretching. The yogis love to stretch, and the reason for that is that they are good at it, as human beings it is in our nature to migrate towards the activities that we are good at; which should be our first clue that we need to do what we don’t like!

Because our day to day jobs require us to mostly sit behind a desk and work on the computer, stretching is a necessity. The lack of stretching in our lives is what is mainly causing all the muscular and postural imbalances in our bodies. I’m sure you all remember as children being told by your parents to stand up straight, believe it or not there was a reason for all of that! Good posture keeps muscles in balance, and it keeps your body well aligned allowing it to perform at its optimal efficiency. While poor posture places unbalanced weight on your joints causing the muscles and tendons to stress eventually leading to you feeling some sort of pain. Also, what we forget to think about is that with poor posture, there is no adequate support to the internals organs, and your circulation becomes compromised making your body the ideal environment for disease and dysfunction!

With movement, all these may be avoided. Movement leads to good posture leading to finally a healthy environment in your body. Basically all those times you heard someone saying to you that exercising makes you healthy, they didn’t really mean the weight loss point of that, what they really meant was that you help your body fight off disease! So the weather is nice out, whether you are walking your dog out on the street, having the kids on the bikes and walking with them or just simply stretching at home, there is no excuse for you not to get moving! Start your movement revolution today! And if you don’t know where to start, just simply join a yoga class!

Camilla Ayrton has a new outlook on how a gym experience should be Coming from a troubling fitness and healthy past, Camilla Ayrton shares her experiences and hardships that led her to a better lifestyle, and is now using her knowledge to help others become fit and healthy at RUSH gym.

Tell us a little about yourself and how you got your start as a fitness trainer?

Now can you explain what RUSH gym is, and how this differs from the training programs available at local and chain gyms?

Well, I don’t mean to be pedantic. However, I don’t really see myself as a fitness trainer anymore; I am in the business of relationships. I believe that within my line of work (let’s say the ‘fitness industry’ for simplicity) there is nothing within a gym environment that our client’s love or are emotionally attached to. If I’m being perfectly honest, this place can be intimidating, scary and downright off putting. I believe, therefore, that it is my job to provide a fun environment to which people are drawn to, inside of which they can find education, entertainment and empowerment to make the right decisions about their own health.

Where did I come from? Obesity then bulimia followed by a drive to get out of an office environment. I remember one of my friends saying to me once “You’ll love it here (the gym), why don’t you do the course?” Oh! I can do that. I made the decision and took the steps towards it.

Since then I have been fortunate enough to work within the UK for council-run gyms, with David Lloyd, doing a mixture of management, classes, sports massage and personal training. I gained valuable insight and drive from my preliminary years and desired to do more. The next logical step, in my mind anyway, was being a personal trainer. I teach and present to other trainers for PTA Global, FitPro, ViPR, FKPro and since I’ve been in the Middle East ME FitPro. I love what I do. It’s awesome!

What an awesome question, thank you so much for asking it! At Rush Gym Women (there is also a male branch) we aim to be innovators. We have a beautiful (even if I do say so myself!) gym that always receives comments about the atmosphere and peacefulness; amidst which you will find personal training memberships and cardio memberships. Cardio memberships entail you being able to use the facilities when you wish and come along to any of our classes. The personal training membership provides the same as the previously mentioned package, plus a certain number of sessions per week. Session length varies but the most common membership is 3 times per week at 40 minutes. When you join Rush you will meet with me so I can ask you a few questions to decide upon the style and level of your sessions that will be directed towards your goal. This is where my passion comes right back in. If you don’t love and enjoy the program, I’ve not done my job properly. I don’t believe in working out, I believe in playing out, it feels so much better and you’re way more likely to come back, remain consistent and therefore achieve your results.

What made you choose being a trainer over other professions?

I’ve been there; I have stood in every imaginable position when it comes to health; some great, some terrible and some others somewhat stupid (yes, I will DEFINITELY admit that). I want to share what I have learned along my journey.

I want to be like a GPS and guide other people who want my assistance through their journey; make corrections when we come up to obstructions and get you there in a fun and safe way. I have never experienced such a community in which support, motivation, caring and passion have been so abundant. I wanted a piece of it so I took it and ran with it. Now, I love being in Kuwait and run some more.

What is your favorite part of the job?

I really am going to grate on some people’s nerves here (classic American Beauty Pageant Answer so look away now if you don’t want it…) I love to help people and see them smile. My mom said to me when I was little: “Smile and the whole world smiles with you, cry and you cry alone.” So true! If I’m smiling I love seeing others smile as they achieve their goals.

Does your fitness program include nutrition as well? Do you set up a specific diet for someone to follow or do you provide foods to eat as part of the program?

Your fitness program will include what you want it to include; I will never tell you what to do, period. NEVER. If you don’t want to include a nutrition plan I will not include it, if you want one then sure, I will, but what I ask for before giving any nutritional advise is commitment in the form of a food log in which you register your reaction to the foods you eat. I believe that there is not a “one-fits-all” diet, everybody (every body) is different and needs to be treated as such.

As I mentioned before, I’ve been pretty extreme with my weight and followed so many diets I cannot even count them on one hand; we’ve all been there…

Mentally frustrated and in so much pain we finally crack, we lose weight through a reduction in food and increase in activity. Brilliant. Well, until the next thing happens, you go to Farah’s birthday party and have a bit of cake after much coercion and inward deliberation as well as feeling totally deprived of tasty treats and starving hungry. The floodgates open! Anything that is edible in near site is in the mouth before it is even acknowledged and before you know it weight has bounced back to where it was, if not more! Uh oh! Best try another diet then (now you can re-read that paragraph).

Nutrition at Rush is about gaining mental strength to make the right decisions, balancing hormones and once again having fun with it so it is livable whilst getting you results that you can maintain.

What is the average time that you spend with one client over the course of the program? What steps are taken to ensure they will still lead a healthy lifestyle when the program is over?

All the clients that come through the doors at Rush I see them for an initial consultation then for their monthly reviews. I would love to spend more time with them, but unfortunately the demands of my role will not allow it. The trainers here have one on one time with every client for their sessions and this is really where the rubber hits the road! The trainers here, Sheila, Angel, Debbie, Jhen, Mary Joy, and Tonette are more than I could ever ask for. They spend time with each member, providing service, commitment, education, passion, and empowerment in the form of a fun experience. If it is fun you will come; once again nothing that you have an emotional connection to or are in love with is inside the walls of Rush Gym. We know that so it has to be fun! I love the trainers at Rush so much; they are my family.

Besides losing weight, what have been some reasons people have sought out your help as a trainer?

Losing weight may be the solution to a symptom and many people often don’t understand the cause of their symptom to appear in the first instance.

This may sound fairly ambiguous but I believe that most don’t know what they are looking for when they come into my office and that’s what I do pretty well; hold your hand and ask questions to allow you to understand it and make a decision. Those reasons and those decisions are so varied and personal that I couldn’t even relay it here if I wanted to.

The bottom line? My help is sought for completely unknown reasons; I help you find them. Another favorite quote of mine: “Find your why, find your way” — Anthony Robbins.

What do you think is the biggest mistake most people make when setting up a workout routine? Do you feel certain tenets of living a healthy life are understated?

A common misconception from users in a gym environment is if they attend a gym (or sometimes even if they buy a membership and never attend) they will gain results. This could not be further from the truth. Even if you come consistently to the gym for an hour 3 times per week this is 0.018 of your week (this is considered in the industry as a ‘good client’). The rest of your life matters!

One of my mentors, Ian O’Dwyer (OMG check him out if you’re ever in Australia, he will blow your mind!) says: “Motion breeds emotion.” If you do not move, you feel like rubbish, you eat rubbish and you look like rubbish. There are more nerves travelling from your stomach area to your head than the other way around and it produces a LOT of a hormone called serotonin.

This is the infamous ‘happy hormone’ and if you sit at a desk all day causing the stomach area to remain sedentary it will not produce enough of this hormone to provide to your brain and will result in you feeling less than your best.

The majority of people come to a gym to look and feel good, great! So, in the words of PTA Global, “aside from your time here at the club, how much additional time per day are you willing to engage in activity that will help you to get to your goal?”

Do you have suggestions for simple ways to live a healthier lifestyle, whether it is through diet or exercise?

I’m going to ‘KISS’ this question ok? (Keep it Simple Silly) • Move • Play • Smile

• Have Fun

For those who can’t afford a gym membership, what’s a good tip to get a workout in without all the fancy equipment?

Interval training (Google it) rocks for speedy results.

Here is how to do it at home: Find some crazy young kids (don’t kidnap any though ok?!), grab a ball and play some games; children have an inbuilt desire to run, move and play and what better way to motivate yourself than to provide this to young people that you love.

Children move so freely as they haven’t been conditioned by society to think that it is unacceptable to be crazy, hyper and be jovial. Things go grey when we forget how to play and once more if you have fun, you will come! Even in the gym, all strapped up in a heart rate monitor, my heart rate has never gone higher than it has when I’ve played a competitive game but there is an advantage, which is fun so I don’t realize and when I am that tired I can rest and let other people play. There is a reason we, and so many animals play, we just need to remember it.

You’ll remember when you have a go so go, go right now!

Was there a notable experience as a trainer that made you realize that what you do is really special and life changing for those you work with?

Not so much whilst I’ve been a trainer but whilst I was being trained myself (I hope that counts and doesn’t come across as selfish). From a moment of my own vulnerability and questions I was able to recognize my “WHY.” I didn’t even know I had it! My life changed – BIG STYLE. I had never had a close relationship with my father after he left my family when I was young and quite simply, I yearned for it. This moment of vulnerability that I experienced during a training session with Bobby Cappuccio of PTA Global caused me to gain the courage and strength to speak to my dad more personally and form a great relationship with him. I am so thankful to Bobby for this, I will never forget him and I will never forget the power of what we do. That is unbelievable to me, and once again I feel so lucky and privileged to be a part of what we call the fitness industry. We have the opportunity to provide an experience that can educate and empower one another so greatly and I feel humble for that.

What keeps you motivated?

My mom. I’m pretty family orientated, as you may have guessed, and she is the most caring, beautiful and selfless person I know. I aspire to be like her and make her proud. Another friend gave me advice once (and I’m paraphrasing) that when you are making a decision you should ask yourself whether those around you would be proud of your decision despite the consequences. By asking myself whether my mom would be proud with what I decide motivates me more than anything ever could, it is intrinsic.

What are your future goals, dreams and plans?

Three simple things, I want to see Rush Gym expand, get more well known for its level of service, commitment, education, and passion. I want to present worldwide at conventions to empower more personal trainers and I want to keep my mom happy, by taking her to the Maldives, she has taken me three times and it is about time I paid her back!

Workout music? – don’t care, or need an MP3 player?

This really depends on my mood. Generally if I am training outside I want to hear the natural sound effects and naturally if I am playing I can’t listen to music as I would lose (and I could not condone that) but then when I’m in the gym I love, love, love, pumping out new music fresh from the UK to remind me of home.

Right now that is “Bastille” and “The Other Tribe.”

With Bastille the whole album rocks because the lead singer’s voice is hauntingly captivating; have a listen to ‘Pompeii’ – it is a stunning track. The Other Tribe are making me sweat right now because whilst I was back home in April I managed to score some tickets to their gig in LandaanTaan (or London darling if you don’t understand my accent) and they were HUGE! I remember being in this crowded, hot sticky room with a friend bouncing like crazy people on po-go sticks whilst everyone around us went crazy. Their music is crazy uplifting and is guaranteed to have you smiling, search for ‘Skirts’ from these guys.

What is the fitness trend for 2013?

OMG! that is such a toughy, I’m not sure what everyone else is going crazy about this year, but for me it is definitely “PLAY. If you want to know more I can give you some really cool books on why we should all be building sand castles and eating worms like kids if you like? Or perhaps just pass by Rush and ask me a question, I’ll geek out for hours on this one!

We Artronauts are a group of art enthusiasts from various schools and colleges in Kuwait and outside of Kuwait comprising of a range of nationalities, with a diverse range of skills and a common passion.

We strive to create innovative, cultural, social and environmental art based on social design. We aim to bring a change in our environment, our beautiful world, through the medium of art and design by raising awareness in our community and recognizing our social responsibility.

Lecturer Roma Soni is the mentor of our group. She infuses her own desire of creating art for the 21st century and making the World a more eco-friendly and a peaceful place to live in, in her students.

Alia Al Qabandi: As an ARTronaut, I feel our vision of promoting social and environmental awareness and encouraging the youth to be involved in art is executed by creating art pieces that are different, innovative, and most importantly, have the ability to inspire or affect others in a positive way. As a team, we always look for opportunities that allow us to showcase the wide range and variety of talent that exists in our group. We are also attracted to any social exhibition, event or workshop that aims to improve or give back to our community in some way.

Jena Al-Awadhi: As a member of artistic group, it is very important to me to promote peace, and environmental friendly artwork. Also, as an Artronaut, we gather to educate youth about not only the importance of recycling but also the beauty of it. Artronauts members come from different backgrounds and different cultures, but they share the same passion and interest, which is pure art. As a group, we plan and work together to exhibit in many different galleries in Kuwait, and to raise awareness.

Having finished his studies in computer science in mid 90s, He discovered that he also haa a great passion for diamonds and jewelry. Osama decided to go to America where he studied gemology in one of the highly recognized university in terms of gemology GIA. He obtained 8 diplomas throughout his gemology study itinerary and he was lucky enough to immediately work for a pioneer of jewelry in the Middle-East, Mr. Robert Mouawad in Saudi Arabia. His career at Mouawad lasted for around 5 years during which he learned that passion and ambition are the only ways to succeed in the world of jewelry. He moved after that to Qatar and then to Dubai where he had the chance to work in one of the biggest companies of jewelry and watches --Swatch Group International. Osama was appointed as the Regional Brand Manager for MENA and India region of a unique brand called Leon Hatot, an exclusive diamond brand that made a lot of success.

He moved to Kuwait a couple of years ago, where he was once again lucky to work with Kallista Holding Company which is in fact one of the biggest Joailliers in Kuwait and practically amongst few jewelers that have their own factory and make their own designs. He is the brand manager at Kallista holding and takes care of developing existing products and new products as well in addition to his managerial role that is to maintain the great image of the company in all ways and to get its customers better services.

Where did birthstones come from?

Some people think that they came from the Bible. Others think that the birthstones are tied to the wisdom of ancient Atlantis where history and myth tell us an advanced race of humans was able to do many things including light and astrology. Finally, some believe that the birthstones were found by the original druidic and pagan religions, where it was learned that all stones have a certain vibration that their chemical composition reacts to and that this vibration resonates with the natural vibrations of people born during each month.

The early gem buyers sought advice from astrologers first, in hopes that they could influence the forces that were identified with the planets in their favor because there was no formal classification of gem stones, a gem was assigned to each sign of the zodiac based on a color system. Kuwait has been receiving a spate of celebrities lately, due to the influx of more foreign brand names than ever, all setting up locations in the major malls. We at CityPages are lucky enough to be invited to their launch events, and hand in hand with that comes the meeting of some of the bigggest celebrity names in whether local or international.

This month, the much beloved Lebanese singer and actress Cyrine Abdelnour landed in Kuwait to help Lazurde Jewelers with their grand opening of their new shop in the Gold Souk, Avenues Mall. Cyrine is their brand ambassador. Armed with that information droves of people showed up to Avenues to see her cut the ribbon.

I on the other hand was lucky enough to meet and greet her at another secret location where I sat down for a few minutes to talk to her. I must say she is gracious, and every inch the beautiful actress we see on television. I am not big on Arabic television shows but once in a while, I am known to get hooked after a curious attempt at trying to see what the big deal about Arab dramas is. So, I admit to have been glued to the TV this last Ramadan watching Cyrine's latest contribution the show Game of Death, or Lu'bat Al Mawt. The story takes us through the events of a woman who escapes her abusive husband by faking her drowning and swimming to safety, where afterward she moves to another country and finds love.

Cyrine has many talents under her belt. She started our as a model for designers such as Zuhair Murad and Thierry Mugler, and made her way to television much later. However, when she did she made quite the impact, winning the Murex D'or award for her part as Ebnati in the Arabic series Dareb Khwat.

She also starred in along side Omar Sharif in the film The Traveller - Al Marouk, which was shown at the Venice Film Festival. Cyrine also had the time to release two albums, although I am not sure how she finds the time, she seemed busy enough as it is the day I met her.

Cyrine resides in Lebanon with her husband and daughter, and is currently working on filming her next series.

In 2011, there was a meeting held between the Kuwait Society for the Protection of Animals and Their Habitat (K’S PATH) and en.v, a Kuwaiti social responsibility organization. The purpose of that meeting was to discuss how, with limited sponsorship and very limited government support, the two organizations could work together to provide real, tangible, and lasting protection for some of the last remaining coastal habitat areas in Kuwait Bay. The result, after much discussion, was the joint venture Al Yaal, whose mission would be to conduct hands-on conservation in three coastal habitats, document those efforts, and educate the population of Kuwait about the needs of our fragile environment. From the beginning, we didn’t know if the program would work. There was no way to predict whether or not our work would

be enough to improve the environment we set out to protect, nor whether or not we would be able to engage the community to conserve coastal areas they had never seen before and had no vested interest in.

The program was destined from the beginning to be a small, grass-roots effort to protect something we all knew would vanish if no one fought for it. The results would be surprising in more ways than one.

K’S PATH has been around now for about ten years, providing animal sheltering, education, lobbying, habitat protection, consultancy, and more. People who interact with us for the first time are often surprised that an organization like ours exists, not just because we help animals, but even more so because we are so professional in the way we work. Their surprise is

understandable, because in general, we don’t make a lot of noise. We are able to do all of the things we do, and do them well, because we invest most of our time and effort into our programs and have very little left over for publicity. We brought this same focus and dedication to the Al Yaal program. There are many organizations that clean beaches in Kuwait, and they all deserve commendation for doing so. What most of them have in common is that they clean beaches humans use for recreation. With our animal and environment-centric focus, we wanted to protect areas that are important coastal habitat, so we started doing some research to see what areas were the most at risk of pollution and encroachment. Through a process of interviews and observation, we selected three beach areas notable for their plant life, their bird

life, their animal life, their lack of development, lack of human visitation, and heavy pollution. Two sites were chosen in Sulaibikhat area, and one in the Doha area.

K’S PATH has always operated with a simple philosophy: planning and hard work equals results.

Planning for this program included hiring program manager Angelique Bhattacharjie - Jeremiah, purchasing equipment, organizing volunteers, getting ministry permits, and coordinating between the different organizations involved. By April of 2011, planning was complete and the hard work began.

Cleaning a beach with the idea of habitat preservation in mind is a meticulous job. Heavy equipment and teams of laborers play no part in removing waste from a sensitive habitat. Each item of waste has to be carefully removed by hand without destroying or even damaging plants or animal dens. The pace is slow, the temperature grueling, and success comes at a snails pace. Despite dozens of bags of garbage collected, it’s difficult to notice any improvement after the first few cleanups. Still, the volunteers kept coming.

The Al Yaal concept doesn’t rely upon a single body or group of volunteers. Instead, a different social group, school, or society is involved in each clean up, thereby maximizing the number of people who participate in this important project. After all, participation is an incredibly effective form of education, and engaging so many different people from so many different walks of life helped tremendously in breaking up the tedium of our efforts. K’S PATH staff and dedicated program volunteers in particular deserve a very hearty thank you for their consistent hard work (they were present at nearly every clean up for two years), but even after the first dozen clean ups, nothing much seemed to change. Sans instant gratification, we just kept working.

And working. And working. All told, we came back 45 times and cleaned up over 5 tons of waste at Doha beach alone. The task was arduous, but rewarding.

What makes picking up garbage rewarding? On paper, we knew it was important to protect our coastline before we ever started this project, and reality in the field was a delightful confirmation of this

foreknowledge. Program participants had the good fortune of seeing a wide range of Kuwaiti and regional wildlife including a host of migratory birds, a large number of local birds (including cormorant), spiny tailed lizards, kangaroo mice, mudskippers, crabs, Ruppells fox, and a variety of beetles and other insects. In short, we had chosen a perfect stretch of coastline to protect; the ecosystem was complete and functioning. It just needed a little help, and the Al Yaal team was there, week after week, month after month, helping the coastal ecosystem do what it was intended to do: provide a habitat for the organisms that play a pivotal role in cleaning coastal waters and nursing our fisheries.

It took nearly two years of effort, but at long last, Doha beach was in such good shape that it only needed a little maintenance to remove any new waste. So in late September 2013, our team arrived to prepare for yet another routine clean up. The sight that awaited them, however, was the stuff of environmental nightmares.

The entire habitat that had been so carefully and meticulously maintained for two years was gone. Simply vanished. The entire area had been bulldozed in order to build a chalet. The trees used as nesting sites for birds: gone. The dens used by fox, reptiles, and rodents: gone. Nothing now remains but a narrow strip of green along the waters’ edge, hardly enough for the tidal species to survive. All of our passions, sweat, toil and tears were obliterated in a single day.

The question we are all asking ourselves now is what’s the point? Al Yaal can, and likely will, continue to protect the remaining beaches we’ve identified as being in the greatest need. In fact, at K’S PATH, we consider it our jobs to make Kuwait a better place, but are we wasting our time? If developers can bulldoze one of Kuwait’s last precious coastal ecosystems, if our fragile islands receive no protection at all, and if poaching continues at its current alarming rate, do nature and wildlife in Kuwait really stand any chance at all? And are we as a nation willing to trade every scrap of habitat for concrete and pasture land? The answers to those questions won’t matter soon; it will simply be our reality if we don’t take rapid and drastic action. There are many good people in Kuwait who want to see a truly healthy environment, and it will take all of us working together to make change happen. K’S PATH needs you, Al Yaal needs you, and most importantly, Kuwait needs you. The time is now.

Please describe your educational background?

I am a graduate of University of Auckland (UOA), New Zealand, where I earned a Bachelor degree in Psychotherapy and Human Environment. I also hold a PostDiploma in Professional counselling from New Zealand Institute of Professional Counselling. In 2009, I successfully completed the course Region Authentic Counsellor (RAC) from Michigan Academy for Psychological Studies. I have completed several professional development workshops over the years including those related to psychological strategies and up-to-date applied therapies.

What do you think made you want to go into Psychiatry?

My first year at university was the year that made me change my mind from being a general doctor to a psychotherapist. After studying the mind and human thoughts and how Psychotherapist can be a family doctor that helps each of the family member to overcome their negative feelings and negative thoughts to reach their goals and manage life. I enjoy my career because I’m doing something where I can really make a difference in people's lives. Many of my patients are happy about the changes they made after my help and that feeling motivates me to continue my career. It’s a rewarding feeling.

Where did you work before you started Al-Osra Center?

I started my work at Al-Osra straight after my graduation however, I had lots of undergraduate volunteer activities such as counselling in youth center to help the youth overcome lots of their psychological, social and family issues.

What are some of the services offered at Al-Osra Center?

We offer various kinds of services at Al-Osra Center like, adolescents and adults counselling, parent and child counselling, couples and family counselling and apply up-to-dated therapies for their disorders.

What does a typical day consist of for you?

During working days, my day starts as communication skills instructor from 8:00 am to 4:00pm. Then I do some private counselling at Al-Osra Center from 6:00pm - 9:00pm where I receive an average of 4 patients per day. Sometimes I spend a great deal of time in meetings and media interviews (T.V, magazines, newspapers or radio). Sometimes I give lectures at schools and to the undergraduate students, and occasionally I conduct workshops.

Do you ever feel that in your practice there is a sense of repetition?

Being a psychotherapist means you meet patients with similar concerns but in every patient the way that they are played out is very different and that's what gets me excited. I hear different stories every day and deal with different backgrounds and mentalities every day but they are never boring!

How have you been able to strike a balance between a career and a personal life?

It’s all about managing your time and doing the right thing at the right time! I spend a good amount of time at work during working hours but I get a lot of break minutes during working days for chilling out with friends. I don’t work during weekends so that’s when I spend a good time with my own life and family away from work and patients. I never combined work issues with family times or vice versa!

What has been some of the most difficult cases to deal with?

I would say that the thing I found most difficult in dealing with a patient is when the family just thought to see a psychotherapist after the patient has tried to commit suicide. It is always hard to keep that patient alive and attached to life and away from trying the suicide again!

What would you say are some notable drawbacks to being a Psychiatrist?

There are a lot like in any other career. But in our career, I would say our image in the society is such that we are always labelled as doctors who deal with retarded patients only and the stereotype that psychiatrist are influenced by their patients and they are retarded as well and that’s due to the drama which biased our image. Other drawback is when you meet people outside your work and they find out that you are a psychiatrist then they have two different sorts of reactions; either they are very wary and run away from you and avoid you because they think you're analyzing them which of course you're not doing because that's work and you're not getting paid and it's tiring so you don't tend to do that in social situations or they are drawn to you like a moth to a flame and want to tell you their life story which you don't necessarily want to hear!

Why do you think that people worry about going into Psychiatry?

They worry because they think whoever goes into psychiatry is crazy! And it is a common belief that the only people who go into Psychiatry are people who are disturbed themselves. It's not true. Of course there are people with personal issues that go into Psychiatry but there are people with personal issues that go into Plastic Surgery. People are people. The other thing that people worry about is that if they go into Psychiatry and they're not crazy then they will become crazy, like it's a virus or something. That's not true either. Most people have no problems and they adjust very well.

What advice do you have for medical students interested in Psychiatry?

We want good people to come into this profession.

I think it's really well suited to people who like people, find people interesting, like to help people and are empathic, which is different from being sympathetic, who really feel that they like working with people, their families and their systems and find human behaviour fascinating. I can't imagine that there is anybody who doesn't find it fascinating but apparently there are some people who aren't that interested in it. I love observing human interaction, even foolish things. If you are not interested in this field or think you will not love it then change your major before you graduate because working with people and helping them needs lots of patience and passion.

JOIN US AND HELP A CHILD! It’s time to put on your running shoes to help a child!

Come join us for the third RunQ8 race on November 2nd to support the Children’s Rehabilitation Initiative which aims to provide free rehabilitative care to children in need in Kuwait. The registration fees from last year’s run are already making it possible for a child suffering from injuries caused by a traffic accident to receive comprehensive rehabilitation services for one full year. With your help and that of our donors, we are making healthcare accessible to all children with a cognitive and/or physical disability.

Each year, the RunQ8 10 kilometer, walk/run, organized by Fawzia Sultan Rehabilitation Institute (FSRI) together with Agility, adopts a different health issue to help raise awareness and generate support around it among the local community in Kuwait. This year the run will be raising funds and awareness for FSRI’s new not-for-profit Children’s Rehabilitation Program. Through donations and contributions, we will be able to offer the same professional services that our regular pediatric clients receive to children of families with financial difficulties.

The Children’s Rehabilitation Initiative The dynamic of a childhood disability is such that it is seen along a continuum of growth, which means that children require ongoing treatment to ensure that they develop in the correct way. Due to lack of multidisciplinary rehabilitation services in Kuwait, many families must travel abroad to get the quality of care their child needs. More often than not, parents have difficulty in raising a physically challenged child, especially due to the emotional, physical and financial effects it has on both the child and the parents, let alone having to seek treatment far away from their home and the support of their family. Inevitably, the family must return home where the child receives no treatment and his/her health deteriorates. The family then has no option but to find the time and money to travel abroad again, and those who can do so are the “lucky” few. In fact, many families do not have access to proper healthcare facilities, lack insurance and have limited resources to afford ongoing care for a chronically disabled child.

It is imperative that there is a better option available to families with financial difficulties.

At FSRI, we met with top pediatric professionals in the US and Canada who regularly treat children from Kuwait and have assessed what needs to be done to begin addressing the limited local pediatric healthcare services. Equate generously stepped in and provided initial funding to establish the program. When we began offering Children’s Rehabilitation services, we discovered that not only was there a demand for these services, but sadly, there were many children whose families simply could not afford the cost of continuous care for a severely or chronically challenged child. As we were approached by these families, we began to seek resources to make access to healthcare available for their children. Through the generous donations of several private donors and the proceeds of registration fees from the previous run, we were able to provide year-long comprehensive treatment to some of these children who would otherwise have no access to treatment. Through a cooperative agreement, the Children’s Rehabilitation Program will

also be offering free services for the children at Bayt Abdullah Children’s Hospice.

FSRI believes that no child should be left behind just because their families cannot afford quality medical care. In order to best utilize the resources available to us, we screen applicants to select the children who are in desperate need for rehabilitative treatment and those who would benefit the most from it. We prioritize the cases we receive and create programs for each child, providing them with free rehabilitative care up to one year.

Your Donations Provide Rehabilitative Care for Children and their Families The Children’s Rehabilitation Program offers comprehensive and multi-disciplinary rehabilitation, which provides parents with a service that is available to them regardless of their financial situation. FSRI fosters communication and co-operation between all practitioners caring for the child in order to work more effectively as one team towards a common goal, both within FSRI and the wider healthcare community in

Kuwait. We involve parents in their child’s rehabilitation sessions to ensure that they better understand their child’s condition and how to best promote his/her wellbeing during daily interactions at home. We also provide parents with the support they need to build more trust in the rehabilitative services and facilities in Kuwait. This consequently eliminates the necessity to seek rehabilitation abroad, giving children the opportunity to engage with their family and peers, and to build the foundations for a brighter future.

FSRI consists of a multi-disciplinary team of professionals who come with years of experience in the fields of pediatric rehabilitation, occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychology and physiotherapy, in addition to our international partners such as Glenrose Rehabilitation Center in Canada. Each family has different needs that require medical care, and our rehabilitative programs strive to meet those needs in the most professional, effective and compassionate manner.

Carb Alternatives With cold weather nearing, many of us crave comfort food that is warm and high in carbs. However, sometimes we consume more carbs than our body needs. When we do, we tend to put on some fat, something not many people desire. Therefore, by replacing some of the carbs you eat with carb alternatives you may be able to prevent fat buildup. Carb alternatives are low carb alternatives to the standard carb that satisfies your craving for high carb foods.

Rice alternative: Cauliflower: •Wash the cauliflower.

•Cut the florets and place into a food processor.

•Pulse the florets until they become the size of rice.

•Place in a pan with a drizzle of olive oil, and heat it through until translucent.

•Let the squash cool down.

- ¼ of a pumpkin, peeled

•Slice the squash in half lengthwise.

- 1 medium onion

•Using a fork, scrap the flesh of the squash to reveal its spaghetti-like strands.

- ½ a can of corn, drained

•Serve with the sauce of your choosing.

Method:

Zucchini: •Wash then remove the top of the zucchini.

•Slice the zucchini into long strands lengthwise (about 2 mm thick).

•Sautee in a pan with olive oil until tender.

•Serve with the sauce of your choosing.

•Wash and peel the potato.

•Use the peeler to peel off long thin strands of sweet potato.

Leeks: •Slice the leeks into quarters lengthwise.

•Wash the leeks very well.

•Toss in olive oil and some seasoning.

•Sautee until tender and translucent •Serve with the sauce of your choosing.

Bread alternative: Chickpea and veggie patties: Ingredients:

- 1 can of chickpeas - 1 garlic clove - 3 tablespoons of olive oil

•Sautee the strands in olive oil or boil them for just a few minutes until tender.

- 2 eggs

•Dress with your sauce of choice.

- salt and pepper

Spaghetti Squash:

- 1 large carrot, peeled

•Roast the squash in an oven preheated to 180 degrees celcius until it feels tender to touch.

- 1 zucchini

•In a food processor, process 1 can of chickpeas, 1 garlic clove, 3 tablespoons of olive oil, 2 eggs, a small handfull of parsley, and a pinch of salt and pepper.

Process this until the mixture is well blended, but still textured.

•Using a grater, grate 1 large carrot, 1 zucchini, and ¼ of a pumpkin.

•Finely slice 1 medium sized onion.

•Serve with the sauce of your choosing.

Pasta alternatives: Sweet Potato:

- extra olive oil for frying

- handful of parsley

•Mix the chickpea mixture with the grated veggies, sliced onion, and the corn.

•If the mixture is very loose, add a little bit of flour to help in forming it into a patty.

•Heat a pan with olive oil, and fry the patties.

•Season with salt after frying.

•Serve with a patty of meat, or anything savory like cheese or chicken.

Ask The Chefs How can I make homemade Qemar or Clotted cream?

It is very easy to make your own qeymar/ clotted cream at home. Simply pour heavy cream into a deep dish and leave it in an 80 degree celcius oven overnight, or until you are left with a thick layer of cream. Serve this thick layer with bread and honey, or better yet, scones.

Olive Oil Date Cake After all this talk about healthy foods, we deserve something indulgent and sweet for a change.

This cake is sweetened with honey and dates. It also uses chestnut flour, or ground almonds instead of plain flour to make it gluten free.

Ingredients:

Method:

• ¼ cup olive oil

• Mix the wet ingredients (olive oil, honey, vanilla and milk) together.

• 1/2 cup honey

• Mix in the dry ingredients ( baking powder and flour) into the wet.

• 2 ripe bananas

• Fold in the bananas and dates.

• 15 dates-pitted

• Pour into a loaf tin lined with parchment paper or greased with olive oil.

• 1 teaspoon baking powder

• Bake at 175 Degrees Celsius for 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

• 2 teaspoons vanilla • 1 ½ cup chestnut or ground almonds • ¼ cup milk • 1 egg

Please briefly introduce yourself to our readers: Well, I am 24, a business school graduate and a recent graduate of culinary school. My passion for food is my oldest memory. I’ve loved the hospitality and food industry for as long as I can remember, so everything in my life outside of work and studies is connected to that somehow – from attending food fairs to reading about chefs to sampling as many restaurants and cuisines as possible. Essentially, the aim is to challenge myself in as many ways as possible – so far so good!

In December 2012, I graduated with my BSBA from Suffolk University and then moved to New York to concentrate more deeply on the kitchen side and different elements of the food and hospitality industry.

I found that the International Culinary Center offered me the best opportunity to gain that knowledge. I applied to their intensive culinary program as well as their restaurant management certification course.

What or who inspired you to get into hospitality and culinary field?

My father has been a wonderful inspiration. He has been the greatest support of everything I have wanted to accomplish, and from a business perspective, he never stops reminding me that I am capable of anything I put my mind to and must never give up when things get difficult. The outcome is always the most rewarding when you know you worked your absolute hardest.

What further training or experience did you take in the culinary field?

After finishing my culinary program and restaurant management course, I dived right into work experience. I got in touch with a wonderful Chef who I admire greatly and asked for an opportunity to work with him. I joined him and his team at Blanca, a Michelin star tasting kitchen in Brooklyn. It was the most enlightening experience. I worked 12 hours a day and left exhausted but it was addicting. I loved every minute and it felt great realizing just how much doing what you love really matters.

WOW, I heard that you graduated on the dean's list from the International Culinary Center NY? How was the experience and feeling?

Yes, it was a great feeling getting that kind of recognition. The competitiveness in culinary schools is quite intense so it was great to know that I did so well considering how many insanely talented people you see working right next to you. It can be very intimidating but it is also such a humbling experience.

What are you currently doing?

Currently I am spending my last few months in New York gaining some experience on the dining room floor. I realized that even if I know the kitchen well, from a business standpoint I would love to understand the many other aspects of a restaurant and I realized that working Front of House was a great perspective to have. I am now working at Charlie Bird, a quite new urban Italian restaurant run and owned by Chef Ryan Hardy. It’s a great place to learn as it is extremely high volume and busy every day of the week so it’s a non-stop learning adventure.

When do you think will be the right time for you to have gained all the knowledge and experience and move back to Kuwait?

After finishing up here in NYC, I would like to get general experience in the Middle East before diving into my own operation. I’m currently exploring options in Dubai, as there are some world renowned, reputable restaurant groups with a presence there. With food, there is so much to learn that I am in no rush just yet. I would really like to be confident in whatever I plan for the future so I hope to take my time to work hard and perfect whatever is to come.

What is your favorite part of the restaurant? Kitchen or the floor?

That’s a tough one! Problem is that they both have such great factors! I love cooking and being a part of the kitchen more than anything because of the high intensity and pressure you are under. It’s a thrill! and knowing people are enjoying your food is so rewarding and such a great feeling. As for the floor, interacting with guests, touching on the importance and relevance of hospitality is also a great feeling. You never really know what’s going to happen, everyday is different and there is always a rush of excitement when you first open the doors to start service. I love it all!

Which cuisines do you like yourself the most?

It’s funny, I am always raving about how delicious Khaleeji food is. I can never abandon my love for machboos!

It’s the love of my life! haha! Aside from that, I really appreciate great New-England style seafood, Italian, specifically Emilia-Romagna and Tuscan styles of cooking, Spanish tapas, Vietnamese and I have recently found a deep infatuation for Japanese ramen noodles. Delicious! I suppose I cannot give you a simple answer to that one! There’s just too much good food to enjoy!

INTERVIEW

What are some of the challenges that you are currently facing living away from your parents?

Of course I miss food from home as you can imagine!

Most of all, I miss just the comfort of being around family and knowing that at the end of everyday you are surrounded by love. Living away just makes you realize how blessed and lucky you are. When you are away, you recognize how people struggle and you can feel the difficulties people go through. It humbles you and reminds you that no matter how challenging things may feel, there are much bigger struggles and we should be thankful.

What are your future plans? What will you do when you come back to Kuwait?

As I mentioned earlier, I hope to go to Dubai next to gain a better perspective of the Middle East market.

Since there are already such established brands there, it’s a good place to take a glance at the market and continue to challenge myself in a busy city with lots of very experienced chefs and recognized restaurants.

What are some of your other hobbies?

I love horse riding. It’s something that has been a part of my family forever and I don’t think I could live without it. I can’t wait till I get to settle back home and finally get back into my routine with the horses. I miss it so much! I am also quite an adrenaline junkie so anything to do with water sports, sky diving or anything in that area always appeals to me!

What message you have for the youth of Kuwait who are about to making their career choices?

Never be afraid to really find out if you love something.

Challenge yourself. If something is truly your passion, venture out and discover if it is truly what you want to be doing. Put your passions to the test!

Hello loyal Readers, I would first like to introduce myself since this is my very first contribution to CityPages. My name is Sanaa, and I am an Australian Accredited Clinical dietitian working for a private hospital. In my spare time you will find me in my Kitchen modifying recipes or writing up new healthy recipes which I share on my blog. My passion in life can be described by two F's (Food & Fitness).

Being a dietitian, people have this misconception that we love counting calories. But that is definitely not the case. Earlier this year, I came across this quote ' I Count Nutrition, Not Calories' and this pretty much summed up how I feel I practice my field. We want to motivate you to change your lifestyle, not give you a one on one crash course on how to count calories. Having said that, I also believe that one can’t change their life around overnight. This is why if you have ever consulted a dietitian, you always have a few follow-up sessions. Each session might focus on making small changes or retuning your motivation levels etc.

The truth is if you want to change your current lifestyle you need to be realistic. You have to make small changes that are not too drastic and can be sustained over a long period of time. One of the major reasons why FAD dieters might lose weight but won’t be able to keep it off for too long is due to the drastic changes they attempt all at once. They will stick to it for X amount of days and then Boom…. Back to square one. Most of the weight lost during that dieting period is all gained back and sometimes even more than what you they lost in the first place. Lifestyle change is a combination of changing your mind and habits slowly and once that is achieved and monitored, I pretty much assure you there will be no relapse.

For example, Kuwait's lifestyle is all about meeting your friends and family out for lunch/dinner. Now instead of quitting that, start thinking like a swapper. When you are trying to pick something from the menu look out for food that either grilled or baked instead of deep fried. Instead of ordering a dessert each, why not share it with your friend.

Ever since movies gained popularity in the early 1900s, filmmakers realized we love to laugh just as much as we love on-screen drama. Early comedy films were silent and relied upon the actors' talents with timing and physical theater to get a rise out of the viewers. As movie technology evolved, so did the comedy.

With the rise of sound in movies, comedy films could take their humor in new directions. Scriptwriters could incorporate jokes and craft complex situations that brought comedy to a whole new level. The Marx brothers were one of the first revolutionaries in the talking comedy film world, and their brand of fasttalking humor is still unique today.

One of the first new styles that emerged with talkie films was the screwball comedy, illustrated brilliantly by the Three Stooges. Screwball comedies were short and featured over-the-top physical humor more common in cartoons of the day. Modern examples of screwball comedies include Roman Atkinson's Bean.

Fame in the Adriatic “Does not communicate his designs to anyone.”

Chapter Eight Luciano tugs his chemise from my hand. In my confusion, I drop my bonnet on the ground. He bends to retrieve it, dusting the chapeau with his palms then gently puts it on my head.

“I…” Luciano maintains his gaze as he slips into his chemise and ties the drawstring at the neck. He digs into his right pocket and pulls out the silver pendant. He stands so close to me that I can see the engraving now. It is a scallop shell that is surrounded by an elliptic of tiny green and purple gems. He positions it in the middle of his throat between his collarbones then hooks the silver chain behind his neck.

“Maria?” he says playfully.

“I don’t know, alright? I have no idea what the preacher was talking about. And what… what do you mean by ‘the one.’ You have to propose to me, you know?

I’m not… what I did with Giuseppe isn’t… look I am not what you think!”

“What I think?” He mocks.

“I’m not liberal.” I say the word as though my tongue is dipped in acid and he smiles a condescending smile, a smile that is accompanied by writings on the margins.

I want to curse him so badly, to call him a mule as I do with Giuseppe, only if I did I’d contradict myself. Only liberal women beshrew men in public, and calling him a mule would not satiate my craving, he’s more than a mule, more, more than, more…more than… Damn it!

“Maria,” he says, his smile slides to one side, exposing the deadliest dimple. “Let’s get one thing clear. You will never apprehend my designs. My brain—how shall I say this without offending you—far supersedes yours,” he looks me dead in the eyes when he concludes his sentence, and whereas it kills me I also get the feeling Giuseppe is not the only trained actor in Benitses, “Yours is but a tiny female brain, Signora.”

Blessed Virgin, I think my heart stopped beating.

“Now can you answer my questions?” He points his index finger upwards. “One, what do you think of the Jews.” The index is followed by the middle. “Two, what do you think of slavery.” Luciano joins his two fingers with his ring. “Three, why’d you refuse the senator?”

I thought I had died, I thought my organs stopped working, but a crowd of rebellious tears coagulate in the corners of my eyes. “What do you want with me?”

“Oh come on Maria, can’t you handle a little criticism? You think getting a university degree is going to be a simple task? Has your father—”

When he mocks my dream I assume he heard me lash out at Antonio Ziani, after all, Vittoria stepped on my hand as she made her way toward him, but when he mentions my father my yellow bile turns choleric and I feel as though my spleen will explode. “Don’t you dare mention my father on your filthy tongue!”

“Oh, so my tongue is filthy now? Should I call your heathen to teach me cleansing?”

I pull off my bonnet for two reasons: first, I hate the fact that it was this audacious ox that placed it on my head, and second, my blood is boiling to such a degree that even my skull is sweltering.

“Your consistent evasions, Signora, indicate a lack of knowledge. Is that really the impression you want me to have? Or are you afraid of me.”

I dip in the well and pull out the water bucket. I drink directly from the rim to cool my spleen. He eyes me quizzically. I turn around, drop the bucket back in the well, and say, “Signore, I do not consistently evade your questions. I think they are beneath me.” I add the way he raises his eyebrows to the list of things I hate about him. “Even though you are rude, and even though you pick the worst settings to quiz me upon my beliefs and convictions I will answer, not because I care what you think of me, but because I hope you alter your impression of my father.

“I have no opinion on the matter of the Jews since I never met any of them. With regards to slavery, I think you, Signore, and your father, are both despicable human beings who sully the status of nobility. He surprises me with a tone that is decidedly engaging, not at all condescending.

“You mean to tell me that you only refused the nobleman because you think marriage and achieving your dream are mutually exclusive acts?”

I nod with pursed lips.

“That’s the largest pile of hogwash I have ever come across.”

“Signore!”

“I mean it. Listen, if you are so smart, as you like to profess, then surely you would have come across Christina de Pizan?”

Is this too much to ask for? To know what people are talking about when they drop names left and right. Had someone injected a sharp knife into my eyeballs it would not have hurt as much as not knowing Chirstina de Pizan. I blame this on the invention of printing! It made knowledge so quick to transport that the margins, which were fundamental portions of any manuscript in the past, no longer mattered. When there are five hundred copies of the same book and five hundred different thoughts on different margin, you lose the depth of knowledge you get from the compilation of five hundred views on a single manuscript.

“Hm,” Luciano mumbles. “Your eyes suggest a mental stirring, but I’m not quite sure it’s on topic...”

“I am not an imbecile,” I snap back, “of course my mind is working. And Christina?

Of course I have come across her in my reading, but I fail to recognize the value of the reference, besides, Signore, I answered your questions even though you did not deserve my repartee, so now ciao! May we never cross paths again.”

Luciano takes a step closer and I slap his cheek.

We stand motionless for a moment, both stunned by my reaction.

“You’re mad?” He asks. His hand caresses a reddening cheek.

I know I am slow to discern many things, I know I am a social dullard who cannot comprehend norms or conventions, but nobody who has been privy to our conversation can ask this question with a serious face. My chest heaves up and down so strongly that I fear an attack approaching.

“Maria, forgive me,” he begins, his voice so soft like a baby’s blanket, soothing, bewitching.

I shake my head fervently. “Never.”

“I did nothing that warrants this reaction, you have to admit it’s a little over the top.”

I am in such a state of shock that I say, “I’m late for tomorrow’s play.”

Luciano’s patronizing smile makes another comeback. “You’ll camp at the theater’s

door till morning?”

“No!” I am absolutely livid now. “No! I am not an imbecile! I do not camp by a theater’s door till morning! I am going to buy the damn tickets—” he interrupts me to ask the name of the play, and to prove that I am not a dullard who has no idea what goes on around her I tell him, “it’s for ‘The Mandrake’ which is playing tomorrow! So you see, Signore, I will be late for tomorrow’s play if I do not buy the tickets now!”

“The Mandrake? You like Machiavelli?”

I have no idea who that is.

“Of course I like Machiavelli! What do you take me for?”

“Well, princess, we have something in common.”

“Don’t ever call me a princess or anything else for that matter and we, Signore, have nothing in common.”

I turn around to leave. I hear him shuffling, trying to stomp into his riding boots as he takes giant steps behind me. It’s really unfair to be making a departure within Caterina’s dress. It’s so restrictive. There are layers and layers of fabric wrapping my legs, and I can’t simply pull it above my knees and run away as I did with Giuseppe this morning. I still can’t believe this noble donkey was around when Giuseppe and I hectored Caterina. Was he making his way to the village from the harbor? Is this why he reached his house before us?

“Maria wait up!”

“Go away!”

It sickens me how he is able to catch up with me so quickly by virtue of his comfortable attire. Our clothing industry allows men to roam around the republic and discourages women from moving.

“I love Machiavelli, Maria.”

“Tell it to someone that cares.”

“I was hoping you would, Maria.”

“Well, I don’t. Signore, just leave me.”

“Maria, stop, stop.” He has the audacity to touch my shoulders and spin me around in public. “Let’s start again.”

I think I disproved my earlier theory of the candlewick’s flame fizzing out only once.

I died God knows how many times today.

“Don’t ever—” “Yes, yes, I know, don’t ever lay your hands upon me, or touch me with your filthy fingers. Listen to me. I don’t think you are liberal. I sincerely think you are ‘the one.’”

I yell so hard that men on the street stop and stare for a moment. “The one to do what?” If this was Giuseppe, they’d be upon him in an instant, ripping him to shreds, but this is not a nationless wretch, this is a nobleman with a glistening heirloom in the center of his throat, lustrous golden chains on his riding boots, and a gleaming silver knife with a handle made of onyx by his hip. None can hector him.

Even Alfonso reserved his chagrin until he was safe in the confines of concrete.

“Who will change the world.”

I did not predict that answer.

“Change the world?”

He nods.

“You’ll help me become the first Italian woman to gain a university degree?”

Luciano’s patronizing smile turns filthy. “Not exactly.”

“What does that mean, ‘not exactly’?”

“It means you will change the world, princess, but not through academia.”

“But that is my dream,” I protest.

He squints with one eye and tips his head to one side then sucks on his lips. “Not really.”

“Oh you can’t be this arrogant.” His grin expands, engulfing his face. “You can’t assume to know my dream, you, who’ve only spoken to me for ten minutes, more than me, the person who’s been living this desire for sixteen years.”

“Sixteen?” He says.

“Oh, wonderful. Are you going to call me a spinster now? Go on. Go on Signor Barnabite.”

When I say the last word, and he furrows his eyebrows, his eyes seem a shade darker, and I fear it is due to the coat of malice that shields them.

“I’m sorry,” I say quickly. “I didn’t mean it. I just thought you were going to insult me.”

“Who taught you that word?”

“It’s not my father if this is what you think. It’s… it’s another nobleman.”

Luciano broods and we walk side by side. His footsteps match my own, which is to say they’re very, very, slow.

“Maria, I want to make you a celebrity.” I blink. “It’s from the Latin verb celebrar, to celebrate… to make famous.”

He wants to make me famous? This day, Sunday the 8th of August, 1535, cannot get any stranger.

Luciano is oblivious to my expression. “I would like it very much so if you would allow me this liberty. I won’t ask anything of you that would jeopardize your reputation, you can be certain. I just think that you and I can yield an excellent partnership, and you will be famous, Maria, you will be ever so special, you will be a modern day celebrity; the first of a kind.”

I stop and face the madman, for he truly is mad, a raving loon, a maniac who ought to be sequestered in our little village hospital in a wing marked “Do Not Enter.”

“Signor Luciano, I am sorry for the offense. In fact, I am terribly sorry for everything, especially for my desire to learn the difference between the nature of the scars on your chest and arms. I acknowledge my error for my curiosity has led me to damnation, so I must recant before I make any deals with you,” I almost, almost, call him the devil. “Do us both a favor and disappear from my sight, for if I never see you again it will be too soon.”

I walk off as fast as I can muster because his eyes, those deep, blue, penetrating eyes will draw me in the whirlpool of madness that is Luciano de’Pellegrino.

Behind me, Luciano stays in place, and I cross myself, caring not to show him the movement of my arm. You never know with these demons whether they burst in flames at the sign of the cross or whether they attack you.

When I am maybe ten feet away from the aristocrat I hear him yell, “Funny you should say that Maria Botticelli, cause guess who invited herself over to dinner?”

Thanks for the Memories As promised last month, I will be reviewing a book very dear to my heart; Thanks for the Memories by the great author Cecelia Ahern. She is a famous Irish novelist since 2004, she wrote famous titles such as Ps. I love you (2002) which is now a big motion picture, Love, Rosie (2004) and If You Could See Me Now (2005) which is a work in progress to becoming a motion picture as well as Thanks for the Memories (2008) which is also a work in progress to turning into a movie on the big screen. I have read many different books for her and I loved them all but this one has a special place in my heart. A few years back I had this idea in my head, ‘what happens when people donate blood to someone? What happens in the process?’ and as I sometime know things to be true not by researching just by belief, I believed that you gain people’s experiences and feelings when someone else’s blood goes into your body. After a while I completely forgot about it then, I found this book, and fell in love with the idea all over again.

As details emerge, this book keeps readers guessing about the main character and what really happened. This book channels the Amanda Knox story, although it is a work of fiction.

Fourteen years after the last Bridget Jones book, Helen Fielding returns with a new chapter in this saga. Bridget is now in her 40s. What will that mean for plot an character development? Fielding isn't giving many details, but fans of the previous two books and movies seem eager to find out.

Dear old woman, Last year I was seated next to you on the bus. At first you were quiet and we were both in a world of our own. I was having a bad day, in fact – I was having a bad year.

I remember you turned to me and the exact words that came out of your mouth were, ‘Don’t ever forget to stop living.’

I don’t know if you could see it on my face or the fact that you had magic powers and knew I was having a hard time, but those words stuck to me. You went on about how the younger generation forget to cherish moments and forget to live life.

You told me that at your age, you still love life and you go on all these trips around the world and meet new people all the time. You told me that one of the most beautiful things in life is getting to know new people that live in all parts of the world.

You said every person you ever met, you took a part of them with you.

I remember how you told me that people look at you and see you as this ‘old’ woman but how you’re really a young girl inside and have never changed. How you learnt that life is too short to give up and miss out on adventures. Even when

I remember looking at you and I really felt like hugging you because you woke me up. You opened my eyes. You told me about all the adventures you went on and all the countries that you visited. You regretted nothing. You lived your life. You told me how your children would tell you to ‘Slow down’ and you would just laugh and shake your head because you loved life too much to slow down. You want to do everything that life has to offer you while you can.

I just wanted to thank you. You showed me how ungrateful we humans can be sometimes and how we ignore the opportunities that life gives us. Most of all, you have reminded me to laugh all the time and have motivated me to explore the world.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom with me. I will forever be grateful.

September marked Tahir Sultan’s third season on the Capitals runway. Having previously worked with fashion heavy weights including Alexander McQueen, John Galliano and Catherine Riviere, Sultan hit the UK again with his latest creations. The Kuwaiti born designer creates timeless silhouettes for the modern woman; his contemporary womenswear line is a mixture of avant-garde dresses and sharp tailoring, embodying the feel of the 1940’s and 50’s, with a modern twist. This season Sultan had teamed up with Kuwaiti based company the Trafalgar Group who was the official sponsors of the show. Sultan says “This season, with the help from the Trafalgar Group Kuwait, we journeyed to the middle earth. Degastan inspired embroideries fused with Rajhistani colours and avant-garde draping which helped create a playful and vibrant collection". Tahir als said that "Modern day silhouettes marred with a touch of old school romanticism, a twist of tribalism and a large dose of glamor. The collection included everything from embroidered suits to cocktail dresses with quirky cuts, colourful prints and flashes of neon. Not forgetting to cater to the ever powerful, suit wearing, empire running, and effeminate Tahir Sultan women. This collection picked up where last season left off with an emphasis on old world charm and new age chic.” Sultan’s designs are available internationally at Harvey Nichols in Kuwait and Dubai, and stocked in boutiques across London, including Wolf & Badger as he continues his worldwide expansion.

How was your journey to becoming a this season. The colours of Rajisthan were also an inspiration, and then of course there is my post designer?

The journey was really hard, I started by studying architecture and then decided I wanted to study fashion. My parents were not thrilled with my leaving college half way through a degree. But I did it any way.

I worked in the Fashion industry in India for two years, then went back to college and studied at Central Saint martins in London. I also interned with Alexander McQueen and John Galliano.

A lot of people think fashion is really glamorous but the truth is its not it’s a lot of hard work and a lot of sweat and tears. People only ever see the end product, they base the entire industry on a set of images in a glossy magazine, they don’t understand it takes 11 people to create that shot and a lot of technical know how and money.

What is your creative process like?

It differs from season to season, In December I convinced a really good friend of mine to follow his heart and open an NGO and he did, it’s called I Love Jaiaslmer. We kind of fell into the NGO work together, I handle the village women and the design and production of home wear. He the historical maintenance of the city of Jaisalmer and improvements to the hospital and the infra structure. Any how with all the embroideries I was doing it really helped fuel my creative process with regards to my collection

modernist contemporary deconstructive exploration which I push further and further every season. I guess the short answer to the question above is what ever is going on in my life.

Which are your favorite materials to work with?

I honestly love suiting fabrics and hounds tooth in particular, am not sure why but I have a weakness for it, of late I have fallen in love with really thick linen. But I also love leather and knits, I mean each material is so diverse. And has its own movement and feel. It would be hard to pick just one.

What is your definition of elegance and style?

Elegance and style, starts with who you are and how in touch your are with yourself it's all about self confidence, it's all about how you carry yourself. Once you have that sorted, then everything sort of falls into place. I love the 40’s and fifties as an era, but I also love to de-construct clothes. and I think women who are daring, sophisticated and understated with out revealing too much are the ones that always look the best. When you walk into a room its your personality that lights it up the clothes are secondary.

Who do you admire?

I admire people who are successful and have had to fight to lend a voice to their cause. Like architect Zaha Hadid or Nelson Mandela. People never understand the inner turmoil and struggle one goes through to stick to ones ethos and beliefs, everyone only ever sees what’s on the surface. And what you see is never what you get. My aunt Najat Sultan fought for women’s rights, in Kuwait but never lived to see it happen, because of her efforts it’s a reality today.

I admire my father for his pioneering architectural contribution to Kuwait, and his vision and perspicacity to start the art movement in the Gulf, which has mushroomed into a billion dollar industry. He was all about educating people and broadening their horizons, and I always hope he is proud of the work my brothers and I are doing to make a difference to society. I was in the car the other day and I looked at the implications that my father had on this region, and I said to a really close friend of mine, I can’t imagine this country with out my father and his contributions.

She turned around to me and said, what about your mother, she single handedly made Kuwait green. She was a pioneer in the field of landscape design that introduced most of the vocabulary of plants we see today in Kuwait.

I guess I am really lucky because I come from such a visionary family, Fawzia Sultan pioneered education in Kuwait with Bayan BiLingual School, her son has set

up a fashion scholarship called the Najat, Fawzia Fashion fund which has been of great support to me, and my brother just won a major award from the United States government for his environmental initiatives.

Describe your design studio in 3 words?

Complete and utter chaos ( ok that’s four words but c’mon is “ and” really a word).

What do you love about your work?

I don’t know any more, I think I love that I do something really challenging and at the end of the day I can sit back and say I did it by myself .

I am lucky that I get to do something I love , and be the boss of me, and I get to explore so many different vistas and avenues of creativity.

What are some of the challenges that you face?

One of the main challenges is sponsorship for my shows, luckily this season Trafalgar Kuwait sponsored me so that made life much easier.

Another challenge is making sure that my quality is up to the mark, meeting deadlines, trying to get people to understand what it is I want. Most of the time they think I am mad, and what I want to achieve just can't be done. Which is not true.

How would you describe your latest collection revealed at LFW 2013?

An explosion of colour, embroidery, and beads. It deals with form, function and practicality yet has a touch of tribalism and romanticism without losing that Tahir Sultan edge.

Tell us about your collaboration/association with Trafalgar Group? What makes you think that this is the perfect teamup?

The Trafalgar group is all about luxury. They are understated and old school, which is what my label is all about. I was looking for a Kuwaiti sponsor and am really glad they came along. They are a pleasure to deal with and gave me a lot of freedom and trust which I admire and respect. I think great relationships are built on trust.

What’s next? What can we expect new from Tahir Sultan?

Fashion Forward Dubai - My middle eastern line is on the cards.

That show cases on October 17th in Dubai.

Where do you take inspiration from?

Everywhere, flea markets old pictures antique stores, art galleries, people on the street, shops, and magazines. Food, everything inspires me. Grace Coddington uber stylist for vogue was given a piece of advice which I hold very true. She was told to never shut her eyes and always observe, what was going on around her.

To date, which collection has left the deepest impression on you?

They have all been challenging, But I think this last one at London fashion week .

Tell us of any awards you have earned and other achievements?

Hahah, I have not won any awards yet, my achievement is that I hope I inspire a younger generation to follow their dreams. Fashion is not like art, its fleeting. So is quickly forgotten.

Your personal fashion statement:

I am the reigning king of Adidas T-shirts, Levis jeans and Puma sneakers. When I have to get dressed up I do and God alone knows how I do it – its usually in my own label.

When young, Charbel Zoe was influenced by the couture of his fashion idol, his grandmother. His passion to fashion drove him to copying her style and implementing her fashionable touch into dolls dresses. To pursue his dream, Charbel traveled to Paris and managed to accomplish his studies between France and Lebanon. He then worked for several International and Lebanese fashion houses such as Givenchy and Elie Saab.

This year, Charbel was honored to be the winner of "International fashion designer of the year 2013 " at Miami Fashion week. His success has led many international celebrities to endorse his fashion line and among the top of his list is the diva Haifa Wehbe who was the very first icon to wear his creations.

Why did you choose this field?

Since I was young I love everything concerning couture dresses because my grandma used to make a lot of them & I got inspired by her.

How long have you been working in this field?

Started since I was 16 then got trained by Elie Saab then moved to Paris & started working with major designers then moved back to Beirut and opened my shop like a year and a half ago.

Where did you study designing?

In Paris then Beirut

What is your biggest achievement so far, something you are really proud of?

Winning an award in the USA for “emerging fashion designer of the year” it was a competition between many designers in the world, I got to the finalists & one of the judges who chose my design was Roberto Cavalli & that’s of course a huge compliment.

What can you advise women when it comes to wearing haute couture?

I would advise her to be herself and to know how to choose the right style for her.

What are your next projects?

What was the biggest challenge when you first started? when

I have a fashion show in Dubai’s Fashion Forward with many other famous designers and I’m really excited about that and I’ll be opening my showroom in LA maybe next year. Still working on it.

Where are your stores located?

Have you achieved your ultimate goal in your field? If not, what is your main goal?

I started, Givenchy chose me to work with them and there were other 100 applicants so that was amazing.

Currently only in Kuwait.

Which celebrities did you dress?

Started with Haifa Wehbi, she was my muse actually so I dressed her in many appearances and video clips. I also dressed the Hollywood reality star Lily Galichi and you’ll be very surprised of the celebrities I’ll be dressing soon (let’s keep it a secret for now).

For some people getting to the top is enough but for me that’s not enough. I always want more. I need the “toppest” of the top!

Who is your favorite celebrity from the ones that wore your designs? and why?

It’ll always be Haifa because she’s iconic and so beautiful. She has it all and she’s still my muse!

Ford, Lincoln Post Strongest Retail Sales During Ramadan Ford and Lincoln vehicles recorded the best ever retail sales during the Ramadan period (July and August) this year, with nearly 15 per cent increase over the same period last year. The sales boost was largely owed to the growing popularity and show of confidence from consumers on both brands’ nameplates. Year to date August sales for both Ford and Lincoln grew by about 20 per cent.

“It’s quite a feat to achieve our best-ever retail sales during this year’s Ramadan season,” said Thierry Sabbagh, Ford Middle East’s regional Sales director. “With such overwhelming confidence from customers around the region, Ford and Lincoln brands are sure to stay on track in achieving continued growth and capturing market share, thanks to our world-class lineup featuring class-exclusive technologies and innovations you wouldn’t normally expect.”

Ford Explorer, a consistent favourite among customers in the region, recorded the highest increase with a total 67 per cent versus the previous year. KidZania Kuwait Co-Sponsored FAWSEC/Specialized Solutions Event A tour in the facility gave new teachers a better understanding of the fundamental role KidZania Kuwait plays on the children’s educational journey towards a better world KidZania Kuwait, the child-sized edutainment city, recently sponsored the “Welcome to Kuwait” event at the American University in Kuwait (AUK), which was organized by Fawzia Sultan Educational Company (FAWSEC) and Specialized Solutions.

Iraqi Director Wins Montblanc Young Directors Project 2013 at Salzburg Festival Talented Iraqi director Mokhallad Rasem has become the first winner from the Middle East to win the prestigious Young Directors Project, an annual competition that has been supported by Montblanc since it began 12 years ago, as part of the Salzburg Festival in Austria.

The competition, created in 2002 by Montblanc together with Jürgen Flimm, a former Director of Drama of the Salzburg Festival, aims to promote and celebrate young, emerging theatre directors from around the world. Children love to play dress up. The collection will be available from October 3.

GIRLS: This year’s All for Children collection is like an 18th century masquerade ball, a fairy tale of sailors, mermaids and tattooed pirates.
