NADA FARIS
MY FATHER’S REVENGE My room was overflowing with books. Literally hundreds of books sat in stacks over many surfaces, on my bed, desk, floor, cupboard shelves, chairs, and on top of my TV, because I didn’t have any space left for them. Our two storey middle-class house stood on three streets and with two gardens. Both gardens had been unkempt while my dad was working. Since my father retired from the Ministry of Finance (he was an engineer), he spent more time in the garden planting vegetables, flowers, bushes that circle the garden’s edge like a fence, and baby trees. One day, I walked up to him while he was crouched on his hands and knees and demanded a new bookshelf.
I nodded again. Satisfied with my critique, he continued to work and I went to my car. I came back home with a new bookshelf. While my father was still in the garden, I snuck it into the house and assembled it in the corridor by my bedroom. Once it was erect, I began filling it with books until there were no rouge tomes lying around my sanctuary and everything was where it should be. Before I showered the stench of the day’s hard labor away and went to bed smiling, I stuck a note addressed to my dad on the top shelf in which I had written:
“Your room is crawling with books,” he complained as he tugged on stubborn weeds.
Dear Dad,
“Yes. It is. Which is why I need a new bookshelf.”
I went ahead and bought myself a bookshelf. I’m sorry I did it without your permission but I had to fix the plight of overflowing tomes. Hope you understand, it’s for the best.
“And where will you put it?” “In the corridor, next to my room.” My dad was silent for a while. He then looked up and surveyed the garden, his eyes glinting with admiration. “What do you think?” “Um . . . great. Yeah. Lovely. Now about that bookshelf?” “No. Nada, I want you to look and really tell me what you think.” I sighed. It was hot. I was getting sweaty. And I really didn’t care for my father’s stalling tactics. I realized that he wasn’t going to buy me a bookshelf, so I determined to buy one myself. I am an adult. I work fulltime. I can afford a bookshelf. Besides, it concerned my books. My corridor. Why should we ask permission for things like that? Arab parents. “I like the flowers,” I said impassively, “and these baby trees bring back memories of childhood. Good job, really. It looks great. But if I may suggest two things?” I waited for him to accede. “The bush over there is empty. It allows passersby to look into our garden. And the swings are old. We’re all grownups now. No one is going to use them.”
Nada In the morning, I couldn’t wait to stand in front of my new bookshelf and gape in awe. So even before I washed my face and brushed my teeth, I leaped out of bed and sprinted to the corridor. There was nothing where my bookshelf had been before. Aghast, I wondered if I might’ve dreamed it all. But the blisters on my palms from carrying and assembling the bookshelf and then transferring hundreds of them out of my room into the corridor indicated otherwise. I rubbed my eyes with my fingers. When I opened them again I saw the note that I had written to my dad—more proof that a big bookshelf had existed. I picked up the note. Before I asked my family members if anyone knew what happened to my bookshelf, I realized that the note in my hand was not the same one that I attached on the bookshelf yesterday. This one was addressed to me, from my father. It said:
Dear Nada,
“You mean you want me to remove the swing set?”
I went ahead and filled in the empty bush with your bookshelf. I’m sorry I did it without your permission but I had to fix the plight of Peeping Toms. Hope you understand, it’s for the best.
I nodded.
Your Dad
“And fill in the fence with more bushes?”

WHY WE STILL WRITE POETRY Have you ever wondered why the poet aches with a limped tongue, And labors on and on to form That impeccable conveyance of abstract matter? That idea, that hope, that desire, That thing that cannot be grasped, touched, held, Pinned down or even slightly caressed; That intangible force that eludes incarceration. And yet, we drive ourselves to insanity, Picking and probing with a rabid intensity, Ripping and rending every fiber of our brains, Filling our sheets with stains, And wallowing in perpetual misery.
Is its expiration date. Don’t be fooled by the timelessness of poetry, You see, it’s just like milk. When it's luminous and white It flows so lusciously and smoothly Cooling your throat, And satiating your thirst. But when the date on the side of the poem has passed, Globs of congealed milk offend your buds at best, Or exterminate your health. And this is why the poet is fated, To generate new verse Even if it hurts (Lest it be stale and tasteless Like some aristocratic course Obsolete and stiff, stuffed in a velvet hearse;
All this endless suffering and distress For a world that has repressed A poet’s place and sense. Have you ever wondered why the poet— Who is not oblivious to the state of his beloved art, Who sees its position on the ladder of respect, Who is aware of society’s economic pressures, And that poetry cannot pay the bills. It cannot fix your car, or your house, or your health.
Or else this potent poem might not simply be stale, But murderous, I guess). So don’t be fooled by the timelessness of poetry, Or this inevitable misery, For a poet has got to go against the grain And yes, there will be pain, But we can insure That the world will never instigate that sort of prejudice again.
It’s not even a ubiquitous genre anymore. (Unless you count the Hallmark cards). It’s no longer literary artillery, Bursting like bullets, or banging, or burning. It used to be a barracks of opinionated people With a mission to save the world! But it’s no longer even urgent or honored as it used to be in the past.
So we draw our pens To right the wrongs of the world, And right the wrongs of old poems as well. For a poet has always got something new to tell.
So why toil and grind the mind for poetic diction? Why ask the poet for poetry in an age that forgot to taste it? And you may want to ask the poet: “Why don’t you just give it up? Take up journalism, or law, or politics? Or stick to picks that pay the bills? Or to remedy ills?” Oh but you know what they say, right? Poetry is food for the mind, And you can easily find in a small cryptic font, Stamped, and sometimes faded,
This poem is part of a compilation titled “Artemis and other Moems” which is available for free on the website: www.nadafaris.com Listen to this poem on the Nada Faris website: www.nadafaris.com 13 September 2012
NASEERA HOORZOOK
Naseera is a South African Social worker with international experience, having lived in Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. She has experience in teaching young children and is a qualified Neuro Linguistic Practitioner, Hypnotherapist, Life coach and Hypnobirthing doula. She loves spending her time at home with her little girl.
Creating quality time amidst the rush of school and work It’s back to school, back to routine and perhaps back to spending less time with loved ones than we’d like to. The summer vacation is coming to a close, so this means a new year, new challenges for both parents and children, spouses and families. Let’s explore how we can create routines that provide us with optimal value, optimal quality time and minimal stress so that this new school year is one that we can look forward to as we focus on work and academics, but continue to cement the bonds we might have ignited during the summer.
If we were to be quite honest with ourselves we would all agree that much of our “free” time gets spent on our screens, whether they are our television sets, computers, iPads or mobile phones. These sophisticated devices, while meant to assist in organising ourselves, have fallen short in terms of taking us further away from our real relationships, away from meaningful face to face communication and it has also sunken us further into procrastination, and time lost.
A good sleep routine entails sleeping at around the same time each evening and waking up at an early hour, ideally many have promoted the best sleep time between 10pm and 6am, which gives you a reasonable 8 hours of rest, and allows for your body to heal, and recuperate.
Our lives have also become over active and busy, since busying ourselves seems to be a trend and a must in order to fit into today’s societal norms. There is a growing need to ensure our children are kept busying themselves in school, sports and other extra curricular activities so that they do not miss out on life. They are rushed from one activity to another while we simultaneously rush around doing doing doing, racing here and there, squeezing in a million errands that need to be done.
Many therapists agree that an important factor in staying focussed on family relationships, especially after a hard and busy day at work and school, is that one needs to mentally leave work at work.
Thankfully many people have realised that this busy- ness and over activity is actually taking us away from those we love the most. Much has been written on how we can create a balance within this chaos. Here are some tips that we can consider introspecting and applying in the hope of finding peace, calm and quality time amidst the hustle and bustle of school, homework, extra curricular activities, social and business commitments. Here are 3 ways we can enhance, deepen and value the time we make and spend with our kids and families.
1. Ensure restful sleep for both adults and children When we are overworked and over stimulated our sleep is one of the first needs that take a beating. When we are sleep deprived our physical stamina and moods are compromised and this leaves us feeling groggy, miserable and unable to be our optimal best for ourselves and our families. 14 www.citypageskuwait.com
2. Unplug your racing mind from all the clutter
This means that we need to prioritise our times and concertedly make time each day to refocus, gather our energies and direct
them away from our work days and towards the home. We can do this through visualisations, imagery and physically closing work doors, school books or bags with the intention of leaving them where they are and not carrying them home with you. In doing so, we will be able to better connect with our kids, sincerely, and fully show interest in their lives and wellbeing and they will be able to feel completely connected to you, heard and understood. Being fully present and in the moment for a few minutes may prove to be more beneficial than partially present for a longer period of time and the rewards of this will be long lasting and deeply felt.
3. Unplug your gadgets, and plug into your communications A rule during mealtimes or another preferable time that would greatly enhance the bonding between parents and kids, and families in general is that all electronics be turned off and placed away for a specific duration of time. This means no texting, no downloading, no answering of phones, no facebooking and tweeting or responding to “important” emails. This is another way to enhance family ties and to fully focus on each other. No distractions, no preoccupations and no drifting into various realms of cyberspace. Just pure, real, heart to heart conversations, fun times and good laughs. Imagine having a hectic day at work, knowing that coming home means switching off, relaxing, taking time out and recuperating. Knowing that when a school day has been a tough one there’s something to look forward to after that, knowing that the days chaos needn’t be dragged along with us the entire day. There are always good times, family support and hearty meals awaiting you at the end of a crazy day. Wishing you all a fun filled, laughter ridden, consistently calm new school year, muddled in with some soul food and family bonding that will keep the year exciting, challenging and still rewarding.

How to Grow Your Exposure With Instagram Wondering if the rapidly growing Instagram photo sharing community could benefit your business? Specially what we have experienced in the past ramadan how instagram was a major channel for many businesses small or big, events, celebs, companies, contests, photography .... instagramaholics, I believe, when the server went down for half a day ..Social Media day, June 30th, the whole wold went back fighting on twitter to bring back instagram !!! good for you twitter. L O L As teens quickly Migrate to Instagram, could their photo sharing addictions include your pictures? Instagram was the smartphone photo sharing tool of choice long before its acquisition with facebook and the release of an Android version. And it’s growing faster than ever.
What Is Instagram? Instagram is a free application for iPhone or Android that lets people take photos, apply filters to change the look of the photos and then share them. Users can share them on Instagram while also choosing to share them to Facebook, Twitter,Tumblr and Foursquare
Instagram photos (from left to right) on Twitter, Tumblr, Foursquare and Facebook. discovery. Instagram is unusual in that users review their photos via the app only, not online. However, several websites, including Pinstagram, Webstagram and Statigram, provide that ability. From the last year, photo sharing has become an increasingly popular method of social sharing. Facebook has made photos a bigger part of their experience, Pinterest has exploded in part because of their simple photo-based interface and brands are seeing increased engagement from sharing visual updates online. This represents a great opportunity for businesses to participate in this thriving community. Like all communities, however, you need to do it right to be accepted.
Like most social networks, users can accrue followers who will see their photos. The use of hashtags is encouraged as a method of photo 16 www.citypageskuwait.com
Here are 5 ways to grow your presence on Instagram.
1: Discover how you are pictured as a company Part of joining any community is listening first. For many brands, there are already hundreds or even thousands of pictures of your products. For example, as of this writing: l #BestBuy: 13,361 photos l #Sharpie: 69,402 photos l #Skittles: 68,924 photos l #Samsung*: 113,723 photos l #Jeep*: 127,464 photos You can discover photos either in the Instagram app itself, under Explore > Hashtagsor in one of the websites that provides an online version of Instagram, likeWebstagram or Statigram. When you do this, you’ll learn at least two things about your brand. First, you’ll see which hashtags are the most popular for your brand. For Jeep, #jeep has 124,000+ photos, while #jeepwrangler has 5,400 photos and #jeeplife has 3,400
photos. For Sharpie, a marketing manager might be tempted to use #sharpiemarker as the hashtag, but a quick review shows the massive difference between #sharpie and #sharpiemarker in popularity.
4: Aggregate your content
Second, you’ll begin to see what kind of content your community already postsabout your brand. This should give you a good sense of the type of
content that will resonate with them. Like most communities, blatant self-promotion is ineffective on Instagram. In fact, Instagram actively discourages it. This doesn’t mean you can’t show pictures of your product and your product in use. Just make them interesting so they can work for you.
2: Create and promote your account Instagram doesn’t have brand pages right now, but they’re not prohibited. Just sign up for an account. If you already have one, sign up for a second one for the brand using a different email address. Signing up is quick and easy via the application. Once you do that, it’s time to promote your content. The first step is taking good pictures and using the right hashtag for your brand, but you can go well beyond that. Promote your account the way you promote your other channels. Just like you link to your Facebook and Twitter profiles, promote your Instagram profile.
3: Use Instagram as your default photo app Who has time for another social network, you may ask? That’s a reasonable question for businesses. But you already need to create content for your Twitter or Facebook account, and photo content should certainly be in the mix. Since sharing Instagram photos on Facebook and Twitter is so easy, use Instagram as your camera app when you take pictures for your brand. That way, you’ll be feeding Instagram while you’re feeding your other social channels. This is a way to dip your toe in the Instagram waters with very little commitment. You can also Instagram to feed Flickr, Tumblr and/or Foursquare if you have those accounts. Just open the app, go to the Profile tab and click the gear in the upper right-hand corner. Scroll down to Sharing Settings and add whichever accounts you need.
Instagram has an API, so any programmer can easily pull Instagram pictures into other assets to aggregate them and display them any number of ways. You might do this on a Facebook tab, as A&E did for Longmire, a new Western-themed drama they were working to promote. Longmire photo contest on Facebook pulled in Instagram photos. Tiffany & Co. chose to put aggregate Instagram photos on a website. Since Tiffany is, above all else, about love (packaged in a really, really expensive blue box), they asked their followers to post a picture about love, calling the campaign “True Love in Pictures.” Followers used the hashtag #TrueLovePictures and took photos inspired by the phrase, “It was true love when _________.” The resulting pictures on the micro site are outstanding, as you can see in this screenshot, and they do a great job associating Tiffany with love—a nice and simple (but powerful) branding play. The site (quite cleverly) allows you to upload a photo right from your computer, apply a filter and participate without using the Instagram app. They also include other love-inspired content and more information on their flagship New York store to complete the package.
5: Host events or promotions for your community
Social promotions can be great ways to grow communities or increase brand awareness. Instagram is no exception. The Longmire photo contest and True Love Pictures are just two examples of brands running promotions on this platform. Running a promotion can be as simple as asking your fans to use a specific hashtag to have their photos reviewed. (Don’t be too clever here, or fans may hijack yourhashtag.) As with any promotion, cover your bases with official terms and conditions. In fact, Instagram itself runs weekly promotions called the Weekend Hashtag Project. Statigram offers a Contest Toolkit. Warby Parker, an eyeglass maker, hosted an Insta-Walk in New York City where they invited their fans to get together on a Sunday and take pictures together. I’m not sure how many folks attended, but they did generate 672 photos with their hashtag for the day—a strong showing for a brand with just under 12,000 followers around the world.
Since Instagram is a mobile application, you can’t effectively link to your account on the web, but Webstagram and Statigram automatically compile each user’s content on a page that lets users follow that account from a web browser. Webstagram even offers a free brand Follow button for you to customize. 17 September 2012

go!
I don’t know about you, but to me September always feels like the beginning of the year! For some reason I do not associate January (although I should!) with the beginning of the year, but its September. And its here again! I love the new hopes, dreams and plans that September seems to bring with it. It feels like we are starting a new page, a clean slate, we can start anew. On the flip side, September brings with it some anxiety, to parents and non-parents alike and may be a tinge of sadness that those lazy summer days are over. So join me to explore how we can get ready for September and ease those melancholy feelings and take advantage of your renewed energy. If you are feeling sad about summer days being over, just remember that life is wonderfully cyclical, and summer will be here before you know it. Now lets move on and plan for a wonderful year ahead.
If you are a parent, take some steps to make your family’s transition back to school as smooth as milk shake. Here are some tips: l Anticipate and address your child’s anxiety: No matter how young or old your child is, going back to school is stressful for kids. Talk to your children about what they should be expecting for the upcoming year and be mindful that younger children may have difficulty verbalizing their fears. Older kids may be uncomfortable opening up, so try broaching the subject in an informal setting, such as while you’re out for a walk, so they don’t feel like they’re being put on the spot. l Manage your own anxiety: Maintain a positive attitude about summer ending and going back to school so your kids can adopt the same feeling. l Ease back into scheduled days: When your kids are used to playing and staying up late each night, shifting to the early morning school rush can be quite a shock. To ease the transition, about a week before the first day of school, start their bedtime routine about 10 minutes earlier each night and wake them up 10 minutes earlier each morning, every day, until they’re back on track. And Mom and Dad: don’t forget to readjust your bedtime schedules too!
For non-parents, September is the perfect time to set your goals for the coming months. The summer holidays and days are over, the air is turning chilly and a new season is upon us. If this does not motivate you to start setting some new goals, then think of it as your own “back-to-school”. To help you out here are some tips: l Take 30 minutes a day for the first few weeks in September to think about the things you want to accomplish and come up with a timetable and a plan to help you achieve your goals. l Think about your attitude: Is your attitude holding you back from moving forward in your life or is it serving you and propelling you to move forward? l The areas that could use some improvement are endless but you can start looking at where you stand in regards to your career, education, finances, family relationships, health (both physical and mental), spiritual and social life. These are just a few but of course you can come up with your own areas! Now you have all the tools you need and are ready to GO! Have a fabulous September and happy back-toschool days! P.S. Mad Woman and Kuwait Weather I open my eyes every morning and wonder what weather we’ll have today. Yes of course – most of the time you’ll experience the unbearably burning sun that strikes you like a lightning the moment you expose yourself to it while breathing the glowing hot air that crawls like a snake through the nostrils into your lungs and nests in there determined to roast you from inside. Or you’ll experience a slightly different version of the heat with a touch of humility involved where additionally to the torture described you’ll feel the heavy layer of humidity that makes your body melt and clothes stick to it like a second wet skin. But the more interesting it is to guess when the next sand storm and dust filled day will occur – because you never know! As bizarre as it sounds, during the summer months under the merciless sun I look forward to the air filled with dirt and dust that wind blows into your eyes, nose and mouth. That is a great change to the fresh-meat-on-the-frying-pan feeling I typically have when leaving the house to get into the car, leaving the car to go to the office or a shopping mall! It is almost like a sudden thunderstorm and rain in Western countries. You never know when it will happen but at once, the wind rises and the sky turns dark… well, not necessarily dark like clouded dark, but dusty dark, right? And instead of heavy rain the air is filled with sand and dust and everything that the wind can pick up - garbage pieces, papers, empty plastic bags, more sand - it swirls around and misplaces from one street corner to the other or blows over the endless sand areas of the country. And instead of running outside, enjoying the cool wind and looking towards clouded sky in happy expectation of the first heavy summer rain drops kissing your face, you sit tight and hope that you are inside of a building, protected from the unpleasant wind or sand that attacks you
20 www.citypageskuwait.com
from the moment you dare to open the door. There are moments though where the contact with the sandstorm is inevitable: for instance when I have to leave my house to get to the car and run some errands which cannot be postponed. Or for instance the other day, when I opened my eyes in the morning and discovered that yes, we are having a mean nasty sandstorm – yuhuu!! No heat today!! Everything sounds great, except for the little detail that I’ll have to go to work… Few seconds outside on my way to the car life changing things are happening to me: I feel the damage made by the cruel storm once safely in the car… I am blinded in the left eye!! All the rubbing and blinking doesn’t help – there must be an evil sand grain stuck in my eye and I hastily search for a mirror in an attempt to save my injured eye. The reflection in the mirror shows that my pink lip gloss has turned into an unidentified ugly color sowed with sand grains, my hair is a mess and it looks like a herd of birds have tried to make a nest in it, and my hurting eye…? Still there, that’s the good news, but hurting!!! Further observation with the sane eye left reveals that my mascara-covered eyelashes are sticking together and the makeup colors are smeared all over my face; I look like a clown! No time to waste – I have to get to the hospital before I lose my eye!! Half-blinded and messy looking as I am I arrive at the hospital, jump out of the car only to be embraced by the whirl of dirt that hunts me while I am desperately trying to fumble my way to the entrance doors… An hour later, with both eyes functioning again I fumble my way back to the car; there is nothing better than the simple and plain burning summer weather in Kuwait I realize and drive to work.

s e v a w e n o d n u s u o n i m u l o v s ’ l e d n e M J “Contemporary woman of today” is how Orlando Pita, hairstylist for J Mendel’s fall 2012 show, described the hair inspiration for the show. The voluminous undone waves create an effortless look that you can definitely wear from the office to a Friday night out. The goal is for your hair to look like it was wind whipped (to almost perfection) naturally. The J Mendel fall 2012 hairstyle greatly complimented the luxurious collection that mixed sharply tailored outerwear and softly draped and ultra feminine dresses. The simplicity of the voluminous, softly waved hairstyle really went well with the elaborate detailing of each piece. It would not matter how long or short your hair is because you would want to look a little bit dishevelled, as if you just finger combed your hair. Follow the steps to recreate this easy-peasy undone waves hairstyle for yourself.
How to: voluminous undone waves
1.
Blow dry your hair in sections from roots to tips with a thick ceramic round brush and then spray on a volume mousse to hold each curl and to give hair extra bounce. (Quick tip: it’s best if you lift sections of the hair per spray for more volume per section.)
2.
Part the hair in the middle. With a 1.25" curling iron held vertically, start curling your hair in sections from the nape of the neck going up to the top of the head. Hold each curl for at least one minute before letting it loose. You do not have to pin the curls up, just let it down and let it hang while you curl the other sections of your hair.
3.
22 www.citypageskuwait.com
After you are done with curling, brush it all out with a paddle brush for a natural look. Remember not to over brush it because you might lose the curls so do it lightly and gently.
This is all about looking natural and undone so we would suggest for you to tease, with a paddle brush, the hair on the crown area to give it a little bit of a boost and volume. This little trick will definitely add effortless glamour to your daytime outfit.

Christine Solomon Her Next Silver Screen Role
Some actresses get pigeonholed into pretty roles and never reach the dark place where the great work hides. Christine Solomon is the opposite. She possesses both a powerful sense of confidence and the unique ability to draw an audience in through compelling performances - playing the role of an obnoxious gothic girl that finds herself stuck in a Heliopolis hotel. As recognition of her superb rendition, Christine won the Best Actress of Empowerment Award at the Madbakh Awards, presented by the Madbakh Women of Toronto group, which promotes films with a strong female stand. Christine was also honored for her unique role in Heliopolis as the first representation of a Gothic woman in Egyptian film. Her array of international award-winning credits, impressive background and extensive experience give her an additional dimension in terms of the diversity of the performance styles of other cultures. Christine has already garnered a great deal of national acclaim in theatrical performances, TV commercials and other venues. She has performed lead and critical roles in a number of critically acclaimed regional and international projects. Jameel Arif recently caught up with the award-winning actress discussing her upcoming dramatic role in Betroit.

Tell us about Betroit? What does it mean? The film was shot in Detroit and Beirut. Hence that’s why established Lebanese director Adel Serhan named it Betroit. It’s an original name and I cannot wait for the public to see the film.
What’s gone into a decision to join the cast of Betroit? I fell in love with the script and my character; pretty simple really. As soon as I came to the set, I knew it was going to be an enjoyable ride. The cast and crew were a great pleasure to work with. We become very close at the end of the project and continue to keep in touch.
What does the story revolve around? Betroit is a portrayal of three couples as their lives become intertwined with one another. An act of violence disturbs the lives of these intertwined couples in which they each realize how important is love and family to one’s life.
What is your role in the movie? I play Rola, a successful strong confident woman who strives to both help her friend and her sister's marriage while struggling to have a baby of her own.
How was the experience working with Adel Serhan? It was my first time working with Adel and I must say it was an enjoyable experience. I look forward working with him again in the near future.
How long was the total shooting period? About a three month shoot. I have never laughed so hard on a movie set like I did on Betroit. Although it’s a dramatic film, we had some great laughs behind-the-scenes.
Have you learnt something new during the making of Betroit? Not to take yourself too seriously and laugh at yourself sometimes. Just enjoy the process and don’t stress too much about the final result; which some actors tend to do sometimes. Jeremy Bobrow Photography
When is Betroit expected to be premiered? The film will premier December 12th, 2012 in all three major cities; Detroit, Beirut and Dubai.
In a nut shell, what issues does Betroit addresses? Betroit is a film that addresses issues of domestic 25 September 2012

What kind of a role would you be keen in taking up? Dream role? I would be excited to essay a lead female role in a musical or in autobiographical film. I believe these kind of roles enable actors to show their strengths and talent and ultimately giving them their moment to shine.
What are you working on these days?
violence, culture, love and relationships between both the American and the Middle Eastern culture.
What area of acting would you like to carve a niche in? (Comedy, drama, action, adventure, etc) I would very much like to do a bit of everything. I certainly don’t limit myself!
How do you deal with work pressure? I meditate quite a bit – it helps me cope with stress or situations that can be difficult to deal with.
Any favourite actors you are keen to work with? There are so many, including Johnny Depp, Michael Caine, Aamir Khan and Cate Blanchett. I would also like to add that working with creative people is truly inspiring; such as director Tim Burton whose creativity is never limited.
What inspires you about a film role? Personally, I am most attracted to roles that have a message or an idea that needs to be conveyed. When choosing a role, I strive on communicating messages, ideas or thoughts which I believe need to be delivered to my audience. As an actor, my duty is to send the message across and ultimately create reaction. If they go home thinking, then my job is done.
I am in Los Angeles right now focusing on promoting my new film "Betroit". My Era Detergent national commercial is currently airing all over the US and Canada. My business venture of two years, Muze Acting Career Consultancy, is growing tremendously. We have been guiding thousands of actors and amazed of all of my clients’ achievements. Also, I am currently writing a book designed to help others in the industry succeed in this challenging yet rewarding business. This year I have been very fortunate with endorsement deals. I teamed up once again with Xe, promoting their Xocai Healthy Chocolates. I am unquestionably busy but nevertheless enjoying every minute of it!
Your message for your fans in Kuwait? I'm always overwhelmed with joy by the amount of lovely emails I receive from my Kuwait fans. Thank you all for your love and support and for giving me the drive to perform my best as an actor.
Your message for us at CityPages magazine? Continue to do the wonderful work you do. You are a magazine exceptionally dedicated to your craft. Your dedication and efforts can easily be noticed and as a result CityPages has attracted numerous international readers including myself!

Back to Work Blues Easing Into Work after Summer Vacation
It’s Saturday afternoon. You’ve just had a wonderful holiday, relaxing and doing everything you wanted to do. But as the afternoon progresses a feeling of anxiety slowly sets in. You can already feel your post-vacation excitement beginning to fade as you anticipate the madness you know tomorrow is going to bring. Say goodbye to relaxation and sunshine, and hello to a full voice-mail box and an endless list of tasks to tackle. If this is how you feel when you return to work after a vacation, you’re not alone. For many, the transition from vacation to the working world is often filled with anxiety and disorientation. This is especially true if your work days are very demanding and your work environment is fast-paced, the standard for most people these days. But there are a number of ways to make the transition from your relaxing vacation back to work a little less jarring:
Get organized before you go. Before taking
your vacation, make a list of tasks to complete and tick everything off as you get it finished. Having that visual will help you leave feeling like everything has been taken care of. Also, knowing that you’ve left everything in order will ease anxiety when it’s time to go back, keeping your mind off of unfinished work and your focus on total relaxation.
Ease back into it. Be mindful of how you
schedule your first few days back. Don’t try to tackle everything you missed while you were gone all at once and if possible don’t plan any big meetings or set any major deadlines. Just try to get through the tasks at hand, talk to your co-workers to find out what you missed and then progressively go through your priorities. Work thoughtfully and by the end of the week, you’ll feel caught up and less stressed.
Post vacation reminders. If you travelled
during your vacation, bring something back that you can put at your workstation. A photograph, picture frame or ornament can help create a more harmonious work environment by giving you something to look at when you’re feeling stressed and bring you back to a calmer state of mind. It creates a harmonious work environment and has been shown to relieve work pressure. But, make sure your souvenir is appropriate for the office. Not everybody wants to see the wild pictures from your Miami vacation!
who have a positive and optimistic attitude deal with fewer work-related problems, are more energetic and generally feel more peaceful and calm.
Challenge yourself. Try scheduling a seminar or
class for when you return. It will help to give you a sense of purpose, and once completed, a sense of personal satisfaction and growth, making work feel more rewarding.
Schedule your next vacation. While it may seem far away, research shows that having your next vacation planned before you get back to work can give you something to look forward to. It helps you feel better about being back at work and if you’re planning on taking a trip, it may motivate you to start saving for that next relaxing and exciting vacation getaway.
serious problem - one you shouldn’t ignore. Take time to explore why you might be feeling like this about your return to work. It may be helpful to speak with a manager, supervisor or even a professional for additional support and resources that can help you pinpoint the root of the matter. For most though, a little time, planning and a few positive steps can help you reflect on the highlights of your last vacation without losing sight of all the great things you’re involved in here and now. Hope these tips will help you ease your back to work stress. See you next month!
People experience back to work blues no matter how long or short their time away – even just after a weekend! If these feelings of anxiety or apprehension don’t go away or worsen, it could be a sign of a more
Focus on the positive. Thinking about the friends you have and other reasons you enjoy your job will help make coming back to work a breeze. Studies show your mental health and state of mind can have a significant effect on your work life. Those 29 September 2012

A science-based monthly column based upon the U. S. National Institute of Health ‘Clinical Guidelines on the Treatment of Overweight and Obesity’
Lighten Up Kuwait© - 2012
With the New Science of Weight Control© Continuing With Let’s Make A Diet! Seventy-five percent of all Kuwaitis were on some form of a weight control diet in the last year! However, 75% are still overweight or obese. Why are so many still overweight or obese? People do not fail weight control diets; weight control diets fail people! Last month we were talking about Tom, a patient who had lost a lot of weight only to regain all of it back, plus more within six months of quitting the program. I explained to Tom that “dieting” must be a way of life. To be successful for lifea diet must be a plan for life that: • Is Science-Based
For example, what does the phrase Low Carb Diet actually mean? Low Carb diets are all the rage. Millions are following Atkins®, South Beach®, Eat Drink and Weigh Less®, You On A Diet®, Sonoma® Diet and many, many others. However, do followers of these diets realize that a low carb weight control diet is a diet that is actually high in fats/oils and meat, and low in essential vitamins and minerals? This is true, since scientifically there are only three kinds of foods: • Carbohydrate • Fats/oils
• Healthy
• Protein
• That Is Practical
Therefore, a low carbohydrate weight reduction diet must also, by definition, be a diet that is low in:
• Manages Hunger • Is Flexible and Not Boring • Is Easy to Follow In Restaurants and Family Gatherings • Is A Way of Life Tom has learned that he has a controllable hereditary predisposition, and has been following the New Science of Weight Control diet now for 20 years. He isn’t always perfect, but he is in control more times than not. • He consistently uses the New Science of Weight Control technology to control hunger. • Tom never misses breakfast or lunch. • His weight is consistently less than 115 kg, down from 158 kg, and his physical problems are under control without medication. • He consistently feels hopeful, empowered, and valuable. Tom’s social life is more active than ever. He has begun to remold his self-image and his depression has not returned. The process has not been without ups and downs, and both Tom and I have worked hard. He is not fixed and he knows it, but at last, he is comfortable with the knowledge that he is not his problem; he is merely a person with a problem!
• Vitamins • Minerals This is true since only carbohydrates contain significant levels of essential vitamins and minerals. Most vitamins are water-soluble but four very important vitamins, A, D, E and K are oil soluble. Diet is another word often misused, or used ambiguously. The origin of the word diet is interesting. It comes from the Greek, and means A Way of Life. However, in colloquial American English, the word diet is assumed to mean a weight reduction diet. However, it could just as easily mean cholesterol reducing diet, or a diabetic diet. Never use the word diet alone, always use a modifier. Say what you mean! The word carbohydrate used alone without a modifier is ambiguous, and has little meaning. Having said that, in the context of dieting for weight loss the idea of processed or unprocessed carbohydrate conveys powerful and very useful and specific information.
Definitions, Learning To Talk the Talk
Unprocessed carbohydrates are the good guys. They are fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains (those not ground into flour or cereals) in their natural state just as they come from the farmer.
Science Based Facts
Unprocessed carbs:
If the weight control vocabulary is wrong, then the weight control diet can never be right.
• Push the right hormone buttons
• You must mean what you say, and say what you mean!
30 www.citypageskuwait.com
• Decrease hunger
• Cause rapid satiation (feeling of fullness) • Rarely ever store as fat • Moreover, they do not promote insulin resistance and resultant diseases (diabetes, hypertension, elevated triglycerides, lowered HDL cholesterol, heart disease, stroke, etc.) as do processed carbohydrates. Processed carbohydrateson the other hand, are the bad guys. They have been processed (ground, milled and otherwise changed from their natural state) and therefore are forever changed.
if and only if you learn to push the right hormone buttons, meal by meal, by: • Maximizing unprocessed foods (generally nonstorage foods) that counteract hunger hormones, decreasing hunger and promoting the feeling of fullness. • Minimizing processed foods (storage foods) that stimulate hunger hormones promoting hunger, fat accumulation and resultant diseases.
Processed carbohydrates or ‘carb’s are:
Action Idea #4
• Sugar (processed from cane and beets)
Imagine it is early in the morning on the first day of your new weight loss diet and you are in your kitchen thinking about breakfast. You wish to minimize your intake of processed carbohydrates. Which breakfast foods would be processed carbohydrates? Cereals? Eggs? Milk? Toast? Fruit? Oatmeal? Turkey Bacon? Beef-ham?
• Honey (nectar and sweet deposits from plants and trees are processed by the bees) • Milled and ground grains and their resultant flours (both white, dark) and all those foods made from flour such as cereals, cookies, bagels, bread, pretzels, cakes, pies, pasta, rice, noodles, etc. • Mashed potatoes • Fruit juice (juicing fruit is a way of processing the fruit). Processed carbs push the wrong hormone buttons, they: • Increase hunger • Delay satiation • Promote insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, heart attacks and early death.
Putting Your New Knowledge To Use With
Action Ideas Tools You Can Use Action Idea #1 Your New Science of Weight Control program is not a temporary way of eating. It is a wakeup call for a way of life for the rest of your life.
Action Idea #2 Words matter. Be specific. Say what you mean and mean what you say. The terms processed and unprocessed carbohydrates have science-based meanings. The word diet alone literally means a way of life. Your way of life can be healthy or unhealthy. The term weight loss diet has specific meaning: • You could also have a diet for lowering cholesterol • A diet for gaining weight • A diet for lowering blood sugar.
Action Idea #3 Your way of life will lead to a slim and healthy body
Cereals are, with a very few exceptions, processed foods. Does that mean most cereals are bad dieting for weight loss food? Yes, because most cereals are classified as processed carbohydrates, which will be absorbed quickly, turned to sugar quickly and stored as fat. Therefore, processed carbs are not dieting for weight loss foods. We said most cereals would not be good choices for our new weight loss diet. We can use our new knowledge to make the best possible selection. Suppose for a moment we were in the grocery store cereal aisle. Let’s look at the labels. What is it about the label on a cereal box that could give us a clue as to the best cereal selection, when trying to make a diet for weight loss or diet for weight maintenance?
93% sugar. Next, let’s have a look at a box of All Bran®. Here we find the serving size to be one cup of 90 calories. Carbs are listed as 18 grams, fiber as 15 grams and protein as 4 grams. Let’s do the math: • 4 grams of protein @ 4 calories per gram = 16 calories from protein. • 3 grams of carbohydrate @ 4 calories per gram = 12 calories from carbohydrate. • 15 grams of fiber @ 4 calories per gram = 60 calories from fiber. • Fiber is a carbohydrate but is not a processed carbohydrate. In addition, most of the calories in fiber will not be absorbed by the body. Therefore, we can ignorethe 60 calories in fiber. • Consequently, All-Bran only has 12 absorbable processed carbohydrate calories! For our purposes then, each cup of All Bran® has only 12 calories of sugar or sugar equivalent! Plus All Bran® had 15 grams of fiber, a whole day’s fiber requirement! All other cereals will fall between Fruit Loops® and All Bran® in fiber, protein, sugar and processed carbs. You will find most cereals are closer to Fruit Loops®. Next Month, more ….Learning to talk the talk!
First, let’s check out Fruit Loops®. Examine the required nutritional information panel for total calories and serving size. The nutrition label says that 1-cup is the serving size and contains 120 calories. Next look for the carbohydrate content. The label list total carbs as 28g, made up of 14g of sugar and 14g of other carbs. Protein is listed as 1g and fiber is listed as 0g. So, from the label we learned that one cup of Fruit Loops® has 120 calories, so let’s do the math. • 14 grams of sugar times 4 calories per gram = 56 sugar calories • 14 grams of other carbs = 14 grams of processed carbs x 4 calories per gram = 56 calories from processed carbs. To your body there is no difference between processed carbs and sugar. This is so since processed carbs are merely long chains of sugars chemically connected together like pearls on a string. Therefore, for our purposes, each cup of Fruit Loops® has 56 + 56 = 112 calories of sugar or sugar equivalent out of a total 120 calories. This cereal is

Going Dinosaur With Your Diet I’m a steak and potatoes-kinda girl. None of that salad nonsense. If you took me out on a dinner date, you can be sure I will rack up your bill as the idea of eating bland lettuce with naught else seems as appealing as eating wallpaper (if you think about it, they both have that same crunchy-blah-texture going on). With my knee being out for the count, I’ve been more pedantic with my eating habits. Yes I do admit I do have that one cheat meal a week. But for the most part, it’s basically veggies, meat, seafood, nuts and fruit. I’m not a big fan of dairy and with grains, I would partake in either oats or brown rice. As I’m not training as intensively, I’ve scaled back on my grains and switched to sweet potato as it’s low GI (hence it doesn’t spike your insulin levels and causes one’s sugar levels to fluctuate) and provides slow-releasing
energy. So for the meantime you could say; I’m a smart steak and sweet-potato kinda girl. One of my friends amused whimsically that my nutrition plan resembled something of what we call the Paleo Diet. Paleo. Stone Age. Caveman. Paleolithic Diet. The Paleo Diet has swept Kuwait up by its cavemen folds and is the latest nutrition fad right now. Contrary to what you might know however, it’s been around since the 1970s, first popularized by gastroenterologist Walter L. Voegtlin, whom believed that being on a staple nutritional plan which resembled what our Stone Age forefathers ate- lean meats, vegetables, roots, fruits, nuts, good fats and devoid of processed foods, dairy, beans, legumes, potatoes, sugars, salt and certain oils- promoted the longevity of life. There are many off-shoots and variations to the Paleo Diet but its baseline theory is that genetically, we haven’t evolved much from our hunter-gatherer times, and individuals in a pre-agricultural state succumbed far less to diseases of affluence (illness one might associate with increasing wealth in a society eg. Type 2 diabetes, obesity and heart disease), one reason being thanks to their diet, which was abundantly rich in protein,
good fats and very little carbohydrates. The geek in me is inclined to tell you that it was only in 2005, thanks to Loren Cordain and Joe Friel’s book “The Paleo Diet for Athletes: A Nutritional Formula for Peak Athletic Performance,” did this diet phenomenon really take off. So what are the characteristics of the Paleo Diet? If you ask me, it’s somewhat Atkins-ish. Or can even be likened to the South-Beach Diet, the Mediterranean Diet, etc. Low-carbs, high protein but it goes a step further of avoiding processed foods, dairy, potatoes, sugars and salt. But nonetheless, should you go on Paleo? The reason why there’s such a big hype and following behind the Paleo-way of life is because I personally feel that many people are not aware that they could possibly have intolerances to certain food groups (if you’re intolerant to gluten, lactose and suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS, this could be the nutritional plan for you) and that by going on such a diet, they feel revitalized and full of energy simply because Paleo omits all food types that could trigger your food sensitivities. Hence my take would be if you’ve any nutritional concerns, why not get food-allergy tested? Al Amiri Hospital’s Department of Allergies is renowned in Ktown for its food allergy tests (follow them on twitter at @amirihospital). Or if you are simply wanting some nutritional structure in your diet, I would recommend the Rijeemy Clinic, and in particular, Bashayer Al-Bader (Twitter @albader_b), a good friend of mine and someone I happen to consult with in some cases of my clients, who is their clinical and weight management dietitian. At the end of the day, you should listen to your body and eat a broad spectrum of foods but as always, in moderation as cutting out certain food groups might trigger your body into craving it. For instance, I for one, am counting down the days to when I can eat my bowl of oats again. Did I mention I’m also a steak and oatmeal-kinda girl?! 33 September 2012
Clean Up Kuwait AYESHAH AL-HUMAIDHI
JOHN PEAVELER
People have a lot of opinions about why Ayeshah and I do what we do. With K’S PATH’s unusual list of activities including animal rescue, education, lobbying, animal sheltering, sanctuary, animal husbandry, stray animal population management, animal training, wildlife management, consultancy, and community support, the variety of opinions is understandable. Many say it’s because we just love animals. Some say that we just love Kuwait. Neither is incorrect, but the force that drove us to follow this path is something altogether more fundamental, foundational, and deeply personal. It’s something intangible and almost indescribable. When pressed, we would describe it as a mutual inability to witness pain and suffering borne by the creatures that we love so deeply without taking a stand for what we know to be undeniably right. It is, as we see it, our duty to prevent and eliminate suffering when it is in our power to do so, not in a way that places our actions above those of any other, but rather in a way that mends the heartbreak we experience when faced with our local tragedies. It is this heartbreak that compels us, not to give up, but to forge ahead; to try to change that which seems beyond hope. This is what led us to add an unusual and unlikely activity to the collective list of K’S PATH initiatives. It’s what drove us to start picking up trash.
Before
After
December 2011: A thick carpet of waste - mostly styrofoam and plastic - accumulating presumably for years, flanks a stretch of mangroves at Kuwait's Sulaibikhat beach.

In the months to follow, our team worked tirelessly to clear smaller waste and debris from top soil.
This
story starts in 2008 with my first SCUBA diving trip in Kuwait on a quiet summer weekend. What began as a pleasure dive quickly changed into a clean up operation when my friends and I found fishing net wrapped on the reef. We soon discovered that Kuwait’s reefs are the farthest north coral reefs in the world and are in danger of disappearing entirely without very careful management. Within a month, we were diving every weekend to clean up trash, discarded fishing hardware, and boat parts. The effort was, a little strangely in retrospect, called the ‘Animal Friends Dive Team.’ Reminiscing to 34 www.citypageskuwait.com
that time in our lives it seems like a blur of phone calls and texts to set up dives, boat rides, diving, garbage, island clean ups, and gear clean up, gear clean up, gear clean up. While the work was meaningful, it was too limited in scope and scale to make a big enough difference. So, as we usually do, we set out to grow the program to make a more tangible difference. What we came up with was a set of plans to develop a website where local divers and dive teams could learn about how to clean the reef without causing damage. They would also be able to plot their efforts so that every team in Kuwait could work in cooperation, even if they
Now
weren’t working together. We also identified several key areas in need of frequent clean up and designed a series of nature paths, fences, anchorages, non-invasive recreation areas, composting toilets, and ranger huts (for the non-existent community ranger program) for Kuwait’s fragile islands. Then we met with fellow divers, companies, foundations, and government bodies to try to get funding and put the plan into action. We planted a seed, and we waited for it to grow. And we waited. It finally took root when the regional foundation en.v stepped in with a program saving grant. en.v had partnered with several local and international companies
to establish what would become Kuwait’s first sustained marine conservation program. Working with such an energetic and ambitious organization as en. v breathed new life into what was quickly becoming a defunct K’S PATH program. Our strength in all of our programs has always been organization, operations, education, and volunteer management. We brought these to the table. en. v was able to support us in our weakest sectors, which have traditionally included public relations and fund raising. Together, we decided to restart the program in the most straightforward way possible: by conducting an aggressive series of seaside cleanups, island cleanups, and education sessions. The program would focus on areas that are key habitats for coastal marine species including birds, plants, and fish, rather than areas that are preferred by human visitors.

We knew from experience that the driving force behind any good program is a charismatic and energetic manager. We found this person in the form of Angelique Bhattacharjie-Jeremiah, who was quickly hired as the Program Manager. Angelique, along with her assistant, Zeinab Al Matouq, united volunteers, societies, ministries, schools, and companies in the single goal of protecting Kuwait’s marine environment. At K’S PATH, we really like real, tangible results. To achieve these, we focused our efforts on nine key marine environments: Kubbar Island, Garoh Island, Umm Al Maradim Island, and sites we dubbed Doha Beach, Sulaibikhat Beaches 1 to 3, Maternity Hospital beach and Free Trade Zone beach . I can’t even begin to describe the difference this program made with a weekly budget of about 15KD, so I won’t even try; I’ll let the photos do that for me. What I will do is point out the lack of paid laborers, bull dozers, barges or any equipment larger than a shovel. All told the 3500+ students who heard our message of environmental responsibility and the 17,000 kgs of waste across 70+ clean-ups that was removed from our fragile marine ecosystem by over 850 volunteers was the result of a hopeful partnership between en. v and K’S PATH, but even more than that, the success of this program was the product of our community coming together, Kuwaiti and expat alike, to get dirty in order to clean up. The human energy needed to make such a program so successful is difficult to quantify. It’s certainly somewhat greater than 17,000 kgs worth. As it turns out, however, it still might not have been enough. Most of our corporate sponsors have now opted not to renew, and our attempts to secure new funding have not been successful. We continue to struggle forward by reducing our operations to three beaches and one staff member through the combined efforts of K’S PATH and en.v, but is that really enough with so much habitat in need? The results of the program speak for themselves; the photos speak even louder. Still the question remains: how much more could we do if we simply had the resources? It looks like more heartbreak might be just around the corner. 35 September 2012

Premium Choice Kinda Al-Faris
This Month: PremiumChoice.ME, gourmet to your door. Kuwait’s food and beverage scene leaves very little to the imagination and rivals the global bustling food scene. PremiumChoice.ME is one such concept, boasting a genius business model and a range of high quality meat and seafood. Did I mention dessert? Although my usual modus operandi is to head to the restaurant to see what’s new, this tasting experience was a little different. To explain, PremiumChoice.ME is an on-line store that only sells gourmet steak, seafood and dessert and exclusively delivers to your home. Their range of steaks and seafood cater to the discerning steak and seafood Photography by: Shahbaz Hussain (www.300pixelsmedia.com)
lovers who usually have to head out to dine whenever the craving hits. However, armed with a KNET/debit card or credit card (and cash on delivery too) I can order Angus, Wagyu, Kobe, strip loin, ribeyesteaks and gourmet Angus hamburger patties all Halal, right to my door. Salmon, scallops and lobster are also available. Their genius business model and excellent meat and seafood quality had me wondering why no one thought of this first. 37 September 2012

I was invited for a tasting at a location where one would least expect: their center of operations, outfitted with a fully-fledged kitchen. Their resident chef OJ took his time preparing the meal while giving me various tips on grilling and such, as I watched him carefully grill the meat and fish to my preference. On the menu – Scallop Caesar Salad, Salmon Steak and finally a NY Strip steak. He had me at hello with the scallops which tasted creamy and fresh. Next was the Scottish salmon, which was superb however, it was the tender USDA Choice Grade Black Angus New York Strip steak that I didn’t want to put down my fork for. Eventually my stomach decided to have a word with me. Carrot Cake was for dessert but make sure to put it out for a while prior to digging in. I suggest brewing a big pot of coffee because you’ll probably go in for seconds.
38 www.citypageskuwait.com
Their meat and fish cuts are portion controlled, individually vacuum packed(IVP) and individually quick frozen (IQF), a technique referred to as ‘blast freezing’, which ensures that freshness of each piece is retained, and you can take my word for it,the meats all tasted fresh off the farm. All their products are sourced from the USA, and are of high grade. They come straight to your door in temperature controlled vehicle and straight to your freezer or fridge should you be thinking to eat them the next day, thus maintaining the cold chain. OJ suggests the best thawing method is thawing it in the chiller for one day prior to cooking that will render them at their best cooking state. I thought of sharing some of his tips with my mother, then thought twice about the idea when I realized I would probably be told off for attempting to give her advice on food. However,
various tips and techniques are available on the website for customers to access should they be stuck for advice. Their best seller I was told are the hamburger patties. They also feature value mixed packs should anyone want to try out more than one type of cut. I left their premises up to speed on how to start a successful e-commerce business, how to cook top quality steak and salmon, and ready to pull out my atm card for when I arrive home to order some of their amazing steaks for Friday’s family lunch. You can do the same, log on to www.premiumchoice. me and knock yourselves out, like I did and also follow them on facebook/PremiumChoiceME. I would like to thank the operations team behind the Premium Choice concept for inviting me on this journey.

House at the End of the Street
Set in a magical world of toys and knick-knacks stored in the attic of a home in Prague. The setting for the film was inspired by the cultural and political contrast of the Cold War era and its impact on director Jiri Barta and the Czech Republic. The world of the attic is divided into the land of happy toys in the West and the Land of Evil in the East. The despotic Head of State rules over the Land of Evil with a band of sinister minions, insects and rotted vegetables. When the lovely Buttercup (Vivian Schilling) is kidnapped and held prisoner by The Head (Jiri Labus, with voice by Douglas Urbanski), it is up to her friends - a teddy bear (Forest Whitaker), a mechanical mouse (Joan Cusack) and marionette puppet (Cary Elwes) to cross the international boundary and attempt their daring rescue.
Seeking a fresh start, newly divorced Sarah (Elisabeth Shue) and her daughter Elissa (Jennifer Lawrence) find the house of their dreams in a small, upscale, rural town. But when startling and unexplainable events begin to happen, Sarah and Elissa learn the town is in the shadows of a chilling secret. Years earlier, in the house next door, a daughter killed her parents in their beds, and disappeared - leaving only a brother, Ryan (Max Thieriot), as the sole survivor. Zadie Smith
The Timekeeper Mitch Albom
Mitch Albom's first book, Tuesdays with Morrie, was a runaway bestseller. Albom departed from nonfiction with The Five People You Meet in Heaven and For One More Day, although he continued to explore the themes of life, death and meaning that he touched on in Morrie. Albom's last book, Have a Little Faith, returned to narrative nonfiction, but his September release, The Timekeeper will once again explore themes of significance through a fantastical story. The main character in The Timekeeper is Father Time.
NW by Zadie Smith is the story of four Londoners trying to make a life for themselves after escaping a childhood of poverty. Their lives are shaken by a chance encounter. Those going through Olympicwithdrawal can find their way through some of the unknown places of London in this book.

The Spirit Indestructible Nelly Furtado "Mi Plan" After the huge success of her critically acclaimed album "Loose" which allowed her to be the number 1 artist in global sales in 2007, Nelly decides to do her musical dream of making her first full Spanish language album. She had done many successful collaborations with artists all over the world in all different genres, but the collaborations with the Latin artists left her musical dream of making her first full Spanish language album.
Jay-Z is strongly rumoured to be amongst the guest stars for Coldplay's set at the Paralympics closing ceremony on Sunday September 9. A source told: "They are putting together a spectacular set list – one likely to include a duet. It's going to be one hell of a show, and fans of both artists will be clamouring for tickets."

Robbie Williams to turn Californian island into UFO spotting base Robbie Williams is reportedly set to buy White Rock Island, California, with plans to turn it into a base for spotting UFOs. The former Take That singer is apparently planning to build a luxury private resort on the 1.3 acre island – which is currently owned by Hollywood movie director Michael Caffrey – so he and his wife Ayda can stay there and spot UFOs. Williams first visited White Rock Island last year and found it to be a perfect location for UFO spotting, with minimal light pollution and a clear, unobstructed view of the night sky. Meanwhile, Williams is set to release a brand new solo album this autumn. 'Take The Crown' will come out on November 5. His ninth studio LP was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Jacknife Lee and will be preceded by the single 'Candy', on October 29. 44 www.citypageskuwait.com

McLaren MP4-12C
Spider
FORMULA 1 DNA MEETS THE THRILL OF OPEN TOP DRIVING With a lightweight, high powered engine developing an incredible 616 bhp, unique RHT folding roof system that may be operated while on the move, and carbon ‘MonoCell’ chassis identical to that of the groundbreaking 12C, the 12C Spider is a luxury convertible sports car that offers prospective owners a unique combination of spectacular performance with remarkable usability.
46 www.citypageskuwait.com
The new 12C Spider is now available to order from bespoke new McLaren retailers across the globe. First deliveries to customers are planned for November this year. Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive Managing Director said: “I am really excited to announce that the new 12C Spider is now available to order at new McLaren retailers worldwide. The launch of our second model is an exciting milestone in the growth of our company. “While the 12C is the technological essence of a race car, the 12C Spider incorporates an additional dimension. 12C Spider owners will love the opportunity to lower the roof and hear the unhindered howl of a V8 twin turbo engine at full throttle. It undoubtedly enhances an already euphoric 12C driving experience. “The 12C Spider delivers all the thrills characteristic of a high performance roadster, and yet transforms into a raucous track beast at the flick of a switch. I can’t wait to see it on road and track with customers later this year.” The 12C Spider’s impressive 625 PS output from its bespoke 3.8-litre V8 twin turbo engine is transmit-
ted to the car’s rear driven wheels through a 7 Speed SSG dual-clutch transmission, which itself provides lightning-fast gear changes through rocker-mounted shift paddles affixed to the rear of the steering wheel. A clear view of the 12C Spider’s lightweight M838T power plant is available through a glass screen positioned behind the tonneau cover. Vehicle dynamics technology including Brake Steer, ProActive Chassis Control and the unique McLaren Airbrake combine to offer sublime comfort in all driving conditions; and yet deliver race car performance and handling on track. An overview of 12C Spider performance compared with the 12C is below:
natural then for McLaren Automotive engineers to apply its carbon expertise when developing the groundbreaking one-piece moulded chassis of the 12C. With the 12C designed originally as a convertible, its 75kg ‘MonoCell’ requires no additional strengthening for it to feature in the 12C Spider. The result is a sports car almost identical to its fixed roof equivalent in performance terms, and weighing only 40kg more with the addition of a convertible roof system.
McLaren is a carbon pioneer. In 1981 McLaren gave a debut to a carbon fibre monocoque chassis in Formula 1 with the launch of the MP4/1 race car, and in 1992 the legendary McLaren F1 introduced the advanced composite technology to the world of road cars. It was

The Retractable Hard Top of the 12C Spider is operated using a switch in the lower section of the centre console inside the cabin, taking less than 17 seconds to raise or lower. Unlike many other convertible models, the roof can be operated whilst the 12C Spider is moving at speeds of up to 30 kph (19mph). Behind driver and passenger sits a rear windscreen which may also be electronically lowered and raised. With the roof lowered this acts as wind deflector to minimise disturbance to the 12C Spider’s occupants. With the roof raised the rear window can be lowered, allowing the exhilarating noise of the 12C Spider’s V8 twin turbo engine to flood the cabin on demand at any time. With the roof raised the area under the tonneau can be used as an additional luggage area which provides 52 litres of useful storage space. Bespoke luggage has been designed specifically to fit this space and is supplied as standard with every 12C Spider. The 12C Spider also features a passive Roll Over Protection System to maximise occupant safety. Each buttress contains a steel structure designed to absorb impact energy and protect both driver and passenger. Launched in Volcano Red - one of 17 exterior paint finishes currently available for the 12C and 12C Spider- both 12C derivatives will also be available in optional Volcano Yellow, a striking new high quality paint which features in the ‘Elite’ range of exterior fi nishes. Inside, an exclusive new interior trim has been developed for the 2013 model year 12C and new 12C Spider. High quality semi-aniline perforated leather and Alcantara may be selected in a variety of combinations to suit an owner’s personal taste. A new wheel design, and ‘Diamond Cut’ fi nishes for existing lightweight and super lightweight forged wheel designs may be selected for the 12C Spider. Standard Silver or Stealth fi nishes are offered for all wheel designs. Vehicle Lift will be available as an option on 2013 model year vehicles. The system allows the 12C Spider to be raised front and rear for improved ground clearance. This technology permits the vehicle to be raised by up to 40mm at the front and 25mm at the rear of the 12C Spider, and may remain in position at up to 60kph (37mph). Prospective customers and sports car fans alike are encouraged to visit the new 12C Spider online confi gurator, and discover a range of exciting options that may be specifi ed in literally millions of unique combinations. The 12C Spider configurator is now live at: www.configure.mclaren.com The McLaren 12C Spider is now available to order at all of McLaren’s 38 retailers in 22 countries worldwide, with deliveries to first customers planned for November 2012. 48 www.citypageskuwait.com
McLaren Automotive has a 20 year heritage in producing landmark sports cars for the road: the McLaren F1 road car, which was launched in 1992, set the world land speed record for a production car, and is regarded as one of the iconic sports cars of the modern age. The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (2003 – 2009) is the most successful supercar ever in its price bracket, having sold twice as many cars as its nearest carbonbased rival. McLaren Automotive has now moved from these successful 35 automotive projects to launching a new car company that will design, develop, and distribute a range of high performance, highly effi cient and technologically innovative sports cars through a global network of highly respected premium car retailers in every major automotive market. Around 4,000 sports cars will be built annually by the middle of the decade in the advanced new manufacturing facility, the McLaren Production Centre. McLaren Automotive’s debut model is the 12C. Drawing on the company’s long-standing Formula 1 experience in its concept and development, the 12C is lighter, faster, more powerful, more fuel effi cient and more exclusive than its key competition. It supports its performance benchmarks by introducing a unique one-piece moulded carbon chassis into the ‘core’ sports car segment in a new production method that brings the performance of £500,000 cars to market at a third of the price. All future McLarens will continue the themes presented by the 12C: innovation, integration of Formula 1 technology, and ultimate performance.

Latest Gadgets Memory Mod The Mini backup array lets users access their media more quickly than they could with other drives. The box delegates ongoing tasks such as building directories to the 10-times faster solid-state drives and long-term storage to regular spinning drives.
Remote Control
Fatal Attraction The 2.6-pound InaTrap eliminates insects without poison or zapping. When exposed to heat from an LED, the bulb’s titaniumdioxide coating reacts with the air and produces CO2, which attracts mosquitoes. A fan then pulls bugs into a holding tank.
Screen Play The 23-inch Aire iPlay monitor blows up iPhone video. When an iPhone is docked, the display’s processor recognizes when a video app such as Netflix is in active playback and automatically toggles from its regular computer feed.
The Switch + Motion socket turns off the lights in empty rooms automatically. A motion sensor signals the outlet to cut the power when there’s no movement; it turns power back on when someone passes within 10 feet.
Night Game Players can see the Firevision football at night. Users wear pairs of frames that shine red or green light, which bounces off prismatic reflector panels on the ball, so it’s visible in darkness from up to 100 feet away.

Look Around When someone places an iPhone on the Galileo dock, a video chatter on the other end can control his view of the scene a full 360 degrees. To move the angle, the caller sends signals to a 0.6inch motor in the stand by scrolling around the image in Motrr’s iOS app.
and Gizmos Mulch Master
Bigger Picture The Sony RX100 produces the largest, most detailed images of any point-and-shoot. The camera’s one-inch, 20.2-megapixel sensor is nearly four times larger than that of the average pocket cam, and designers added a wide-aperture lens, so that more light reaches the sensor.
The 10-gallon bag on the Trivac yard vacuum will hold an entire lawn full of leaves. In addition to the standard impeller blade, the vacuum has two one-inch shredder blades that help reduce an 18-cubic-foot pile of leaves to one cubic foot of mulch.
Super Shaver The Styleshaver Pro is a double-ended groomer. The tool has a foil shaver and beard trimmer, each with its own motor; users transfer power from the central battery pack with a toggle on the handle.
Sound Shapes Callers can contort this Bluetooth speakerphone to better direct sound at them. The device’s two 1.6-inch drivers sit at the ends of two swiveling arms, which users can rotate a full 180 degrees.
Gutter Brain The Looj is the only autonomous gutter cleaner. Users set the 15.6-inch robot into a clogged gutter, and a set of spinning paddles fling debris to the ground as it moves forward. If it hits an obstacle, sensors on the motor trigger the Looj to shuffle back and forth to dislodge the blockage.
Quick Turn The GYRO is the first tool users control with gestures. Black & Decker embedded a gyroscope into the handle of the electric screwdriver to control its motor; the farther a user tilts his wrist right, for instance, the faster the motor drives in screws.
