June is the sixth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars and one of the four months with a length of 30 days. Ovid provides two etymologies for June's name in his poem concerning the months entitled the Fasti. In both common and leap years, no other month begins on the same day of the week as June. This month and May are the only two months that have this property. June ends on the same day of the week as March every year. June is the month with the longest daylight hours of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest daylight hours of the year in the Southern Hemisphere. June in the Northern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent to December in the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa.

Revolutionkuwait.com changing the way Kuwait eats one family at a time. The world celebrated the food revolution day for the first time in history. The food revolution day assigned ambassadors in more than 46 countries. Health Coach Juna Alawadhi came all the way from New York to shock us with the modern day myths of weight loss diets and techniques. A healthy Lifestyle is the only way she advocates for a happy life, not a fad diet that would leave a person tired, starved, hopeless, and with no real results to show for it. The myths Juna mentioned include Coffee, Pineapple; the magical fruit that burns fat, Fat Free, Soft Drink Hero, Soy Milk, Dark Chocolate. Dr. Nada AlRagom explained the necessity of a healthy natural living for the benefits of our kids. We have the future generations’ health in our hands and we should protect our future assets. Dr. Nada inspired the audience with her personal story and ignited the flame of knowledge in them. We join her in her conviction that Change IS Possible. Our lifestyle depends greatly on our diets and vice versa, Dr. Nada brushed on this interesting topic and showed us how our diets affect our weight, immunity, and personality. Participants tried various healthy dishes made with the best quality organic ingredients from the oldest organic farm in Kuwait that was established in 1992. Miss Ms. Budour Algassar demonstrated live how to cook an easy recipe that could replace junk food and everyone including the kids have joined her. The announcement of a list of intriguing workshops was another highlight of the evening. Life changing workshops included organic gardening, healthy cooking, smart school lunch, and many other topics with inspiring speakers from Kuwait and outside like Jumana Alawadhi, a pioneer in organic nutrition as well as many other inspirational activists like nutritionist Jumana Alothman, Zaina Albabtain and Dr. Abeer hamada. Everyone including the kids enjoyed the light cooking demonstration by Chef Paul and Coach Juna, then everyone went to make their own fruit cake with the help of our volunteers. www.welovekuwait.com Bookshop entertained the kids with coloring pages about health and nutrition. They also had healthy snacks courtesy of Holistic Nutrition Pioneer Jumana Alawadhi Participants left not only with motivational thoughts and inspiring stories, but with a healthy dinner box, organic gifts and handpicked collection of nutritional science books.

4 Positive Traits Of Innovative Leaders We Love Behind every great leader is a great team, but there is no great team without a great leader. From setting goals, having a vision, policing enthusiasm and recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of those they guide, we raise our glasses to these innovative leaders who have managed to captain their giant ships through currents thick and thin and for being heroic individuals! The Questioning Leader Howard Schultz It was Howard Schultz who had to convince Starbucks to hire him after he fell in love with coffee, but Starbucks wasn’t convinced by Howard’s idea of turning coffee into a societal symbol. Determined to challenge the traditional approach of cafe retailers in America, he started his own coffee bar called Il Giornale, and later bought over Starbucks for $3.4 million. That was 20 years ago; today Starbucks is a worldwide caffeine fixation worth $19.2 billion. It’s Howard’s ability to take the “Why Not?” attitude and question popular mindsets that drove him to becoming the coffee icon he is today. We admire his courage of not letting conventional thinking or even his own doubts get in the way of his creativity and his dream.

The Compassionate Leader Anita Roddick With every ingredient she used in The Body Shop products, the late Dame Anita Roddick told the story of its origin, of the people behind it and of its importance in consumerism. Under her leadership, The Body Shop was famous for supporting social and environmental causes, community fair trade and for producing their products ethically. She pretty much bottled up human emotions and turned consumers into compassionate users themselves! Anita was also an experimenter, constantly sourcing natural ingredients and thinking up zero waste strategies, which gained The Body Shop a loyal customer base. We admire her ability to be driven by her compassion and spreading awareness through her creative and innovative strategies, whilst becoming one of the world’s most iconic entrepreneurs along the way!

The Persistent Leader Steve Jobs Persistent leaders never give up despite the hardest of falls, and this was one apparent quality in Steve Jobs, the co-founder and former CEO of Apple. Being forced to leave the company in 1995 didn’t stop him from venturing on to other successes such as NeXT Computer and Pixar. When he rejoined Apple in 1996, he went on to hone the company towards being the most successful brand in the world to date, creating a global cult of Apple users who have made its products crucial tools in their lifestyles and changing the meaning of “an apple a day”! Steve may have also been known for his perfectionist demands, but it was his determination to position his products at the forefront of information technology that made Apple the icon it is today. We admire him for his perseverance, his relentless need to be innovative and for sticking with it till the win.

The Appreciative Leader Eric Schmidt Eric Schmidt was the CEO of Google from 2001 – 2011 and during his run, had helped the company to build the corporate infrastructure needed to support Google’s rapid growth during that decade, earning him a spot on the 50 most important people on the web by PC World. Eric valued human resource and often credited his employees for his success. “Google is run by its culture and not by me,” he said in an interview with theWashington Post. Even with his previous company, Sun Microsystems, it’s been said that he was most proud of the people he hired. We admire him for his appreciation of his employees and for helping to create one of the best working environments on the planet, as proven through the diverse culture and values at Google offices worldwide!

Who are your favorite innovative leaders, and what traits do they possess? We only had room for four, but we’re sure there are hundreds out there who have inspired people with their positive leadership! 15 May 2012

Time saving Tips for business Start ups As for larger organisations, understanding the importance of Social Media for engaging with their customer has a simple response - employ a dedicated Social Media Officer! However, for small businesses such as sole traders where one person fits all roles, time saving is essential. To join join the conversation when you are already feeling time stretched, this brilliant social media Traffic light concept...and where should you begin? 1. Traffic Lighting - This is a concept I have been drumming into the vast majority of my clients of late. The World of social media can seem overwhelming, so it is important to drill down to where you have a presence, what you do on there are why rather than rashly signing up to every site going and leaving them lacklustre. Taking a step back to research and consider where your customers are hanging out online and and what strategy you can employ to reach them is essential. When you have given yourself this head space you will be able to consider which social media site is:

GREEN - the one where your customers hang out most, and makes most sense to

your marketing strategy. Green = Go! This is the site you should start with. Commit some time to updating it regularly, and read around how other businesses are using this channel for marketing. AMBER - these are the social media tools that could add value to your marketing, but should be considered as your business progresses and you find you have some extra time to commit. RED - Avoid these at start-up stage. These may be sites you could justify to yourself using as marketing tools, but they are not an immediate priority. Ditch them for now and put them in your business plan under 'growth strategy'. 2. Automate Activity - If you can't be online daily, don't let your social media channels die a death just as you have got them going. Use a tool like Tweetdeck, or my personal favourite hootsuite. With these tools you can log in when you get chance and schedule messages to go out through your social media channels at a selected time and date. You can also link your social media activity together using tools like Networked blogs, or the Twitter and Facebook apps on the respective sites. A small warning here though - it's important to not automate ALL of your activity. It's called 'social' media for a reason, so make sure you commit at least some time to live interaction. 3. Finding Content at Your Fingertips - Google Alerts is absolutely your best friend for narrowing down hours of thinking through "what on earth can I post about". Set up Google alerts for key words and phrases around your industry to receive daily, weekly, or 'as it happens' updates showing new web content on the topic. Then follow these links to use them as posts 16 www.citypageskuwait.com

you can comment on via your social media channels. Simples! Whatever you decide to do to save time, don't go for the "I'll just leave it altogether" option. If your business hasn't got a social media strategy it is getting left behind - fact! Every business needs marketing, so think of it as swapping the time you would have spent on another part of offline marketing rather than an extra chore. And if it all becomes too much, consider using the services of a freelancer until you grow big enough to have dedicated marketing staff. I believe this will help many small businesses , and start up individuals with tips and tools needed Stay tuned for next month article and coverage of the first Arabian Social media conference .

Mad Woman at the Airport

Finally

the day had arrived when I would leave for my wonderful vacation!! That night, after months of working in the office, spending weekends in shopping malls, being stuck in traffic jams for countless hours and spending at least as many sweaty hours in the ladies’ gym, I was at long last ready for my well-deserved week full of relaxation, sightseeing, shopping and fun. My suitcase was packed with clothes in various colors for any occasion, my favorite jeans, skirts, tops, shoes, handbags, accessories, cosmetics, and most importantly - more shoes! Having another pair with you can prove handy as you never know when you break the heel of your stiletto walking down the picturesque cobblestone streets in one of those idyllic small villages or in the old town of a large metropolitan city. While heading to the airport, I was excited and confident about how wellprepared I was for the trip. Even for the flight journey, my clothes were functional (no pockets in which I most probably would have stored and forgotten a cosmetic item which would have set off an annoying alarm at the security check in the airport) and elegant at the same time. My boots were practical (easy to remove before and put on after the security check) and with a reasonable length of heels. My passport, airline ticket and a small plastic bag with toiletries were all ready in my handbag and easy to access. While turning into the parking area at the airport I spotted a long row of cars with women and men in them working the horn in various degrees of nervousness. The cacophony of horns didn’t seem to stop and I suspected some unpleasant things were happening somewhere in the car park. Suddenly I spotted a white bundle of dishtashas further away between the cars, hands holding flip-flops and slapping frantically. Agals and keffiyehs were being flung in different directions. I understood that there were some men there, sorting out a disagreement between them through a scuffle. After a few minutes of the spectacle, the bone of contention seemed to have been solved between the participants and the fight club repositioned their flip-flops and disheveled clothing items to the body parts they usually belong to. Shortly after that the

horns fell quiet, the cars started moving and I finally went on to park my car. All the while, I remember admitting to myself that I like the problem-solving methods between men here – you make your point clear to the opposing party right then and there and the two parties work through the situation until the dispute is settled. “How easy is that?” I think, while grabbing my sun glasses, car keys and handbag to exit the car except… Where is my handbag?? I panic and rapidly search the car – nothing! I must have left it at home! I still had enough time to speed home and get back to the airport on time on the condition that I didn’t waste a minute! On my way out of the car park I got cut off by two cars that abruptly stopped in front of me. Their doors were then torn open and the earlier scenario of flip-flop lashing between white dishtashas restarted. Oh, well, obviously the discussion hadn’t gotten over yet! This time I join the horn contest of the cars as I really was in a hurry. I could miss my flight guys! After a quick consideration, I decide to get out of my car and walk towards the commotion. I immediately see the effect of my unconventional action – the frantic movements stopped and several pairs of dark eyes pin me down.”How can we help you, ma’am?” someone asks. “Well, I am terribly sorry to disturb, but, eh... my handbag, I have a flight to catch, but my purse is in the handbag, and, I guess I must have, eh... So I really have to go.” I muttered, not sure that it made anything I said made sense. But I suppose it didn’t have to because without a word the crowd made way to let my car through. Great! Thanks! I ran back to my car, drove out of the car park without daring to glance in the rear mirror. My only worry at this point was that I would be back in the same car park an hour later and I hoped that the quarrel would have been settled by then. Yes, eventually I did make it back in time to catch my flight, and now, while enjoying my lunch in the airplane I am reminded of the kindness and sympathy with which I was treated at the car park. Although I was intruding into an important discussion, I was encouraged to speak out and my problem was taken seriously. What wonderful people we have here! I will miss you, Kuwait.

Lighting Lighting is one of the most powerful elements in any given interior space. Ordinary spaces can be transformed into extra ordinary, full of drama and contrast with the added ingredient of light. This element can be manipulated to brighten or dim, highlight or obscure, or to simply create planes of shadow and color. Light can change the ambiance of a room by the switch of a button, in one moment a room can be lit, bright and functional for studying or can be dimmed to offer an intimate space.

Lighting

is usually the one aspect of design that is usually forgotten when planning, while it really should be considered first, that is because lighting is considered to be tangible, something we can feel like a fabric or stone. It is crucial to understand that a little forward planning is essential. First think of the space you are designing, how do you plan to use it? When will you use it and what's the mood you wish to create. Next think about the colors you want to use, the choice of furnishing and finishing and finally the details. To succesfuly light any interior one needs to understand the tools at their disposal. Though there are no fixed rules it is helpful to divide lighting into different elements and to know which tool is best for each purpose. Each lighting type gives its own character to a space and can be adjusted from day to night. There are three basic types of lights. General lighting, it provides an overall brightness. This kind of light is extremely versatile and important for every day use. Placing it on a dimmer will add a flexible element to it.

emphasizing whatever lies in their path.

Secondly we have feature or accent lighting, it creates the highlights; it directs the attention to focal points in a space such as a favourite piece of furniture. Local rather than general, this type of lighting acts as an additional layer to your lighting scheme, accentuating without upsetting the balance.

2- Uplights wash the ceiling with light which is then reflected back into the room in diffused form. These kinds of lighting create a great sense of height if the ceiling is light in color, but if the ceiling is dark the amount of reflected light will be minimal. They need to be above eye level to avoid glare.

Finally we have Task lighting which is designed for specific need, such as reading or food preparation. It provides a strong localized light with its source usually hidden from view to avoid glare. Task lights should be controlled separately leaving you free to adjust the general and feature lighting to suit your mood.

3- Wallwashers are designed to cast light evenly across and down a wall. Wall washers provide a gentle diffused light if fitted with a frosted lens. Wall washers can also become dynamic source of feature lighting when used with a narrow beam. These types of light are mostly used to emphasize surface textures such as a brick wall.

We can sum up the types of lighting tools to about six main tools: down lights, up lights, wall washers, hidden lighting, color and control. You can think of them in terms of inspiring effects they can produces. 1- Down lights are usually recessed into ceilings. As the name suggests they direct lights downwards 18 www.citypageskuwait.com

4- Hidden lighting or what is also known as recessed lighting is usually used to define levels in a ceiling. They are also used in walls and floors when one wants to define a space or a plane. 5- Artificial lighting comes in different colors and tones.

It comes in crisp white, a cool white, warm or as we call it day light and yellow.. of course they also some in all the colors of the rainbow but we are now talking about regular lighting. The choice of light color will always effect the colors you have in a space therefore its always recommended to take the samples of fabric, wood and finished in the room before finalizing the selection. 6- The final tool in any lighting is control. It is always better to plan your lighting and have your lighting system separated onto different circuits so that each element can be individually controlled. Control is the element that would create both atmosphere and change it with a push of a button by transforming a bright room in to a dramatic room. With the tools now at your disposal the simplest space can be easily transformed to be infused with richness and depth. With lighting, dimension is enhanced, structures highlighted, textures exposed and focal point emphasized.

Customer Satisfaction is a Reflection of Employee Satisfaction For most organizations, the goal of improving customer service levels is an article of faith. And so it should be, because there's an overwhelming body of research to show that building customer loyalty has a major impact on profitability. In fact, according to one study — based on 46,000 business-to-business surveys — a "totally satisfied" customer contributes 2.6 times as much revenue as a "somewhat satisfied" customer. Clearly, there are significant benefits to be realized from trying to improve an organization's service/quality. And that's why managers devote so much time and money to training programs that "instruct" employees on the specifics of dealing with customers. What these managers don't understand, however, is that such attempts are largely cosmetic. Real improvements in customer service start with providing superior service and support to the employees themselves. All too often, this misunderstanding results in sending staff through "smile training," issuing edicts to be more courteous, or teaching them how to handle dissatisfied customers. In the meantime, processes and systems don't support front line servers. Irritants and issues that reduce morale are swept aside as excuses. An airline manager attempted to address the problem of declining customer satisfaction by issuing a directive urging staff to smile and be nicer to passengers. A flight attendant's response showed how that manager just didn't get it: "We're smiling in spite of the fact that we're doing our job one, two or three flight attendants short, with equipment that often doesn't work properly and with a product that has deteriorated." Harvard professor and author Rosabeth Moss Kanter likens this type of change-effort to putting lipstick on a bulldog. Rather than deal with an ugly and nasty problem (my apologies to bulldog owners), the manager makes superficial changes and tries to pass them off as real improvements. The result of this cosmetic effort is, as Kanter observes, that "the bulldog's appearance hasn't improved, but now it's really angry." Taking an organization from good to great customer service ultimately depends on the people who provide that service. It can only happen through the volunteer-

20 www.citypageskuwait.com

ism — the willingness to go beyond what is merely required — of people who serve on the front lines. Going from ordinary to extraordinary performance happens through the discretionary efforts of front line staff deciding to make the thousands of "moment(s) of truth" (any time a customer interacts with the company in person, by phone, or electronically), they manage every day as positively as they possibly can. This enthusiasm, loyalty, or devotion can't be forced on people. It only happens through a "culture of commitment," where front line people reflect to the outside the intense pride and ownership they are experiencing on the inside. Here are some examples of the research showing the connection between internal and external service: The best predictor of customer satisfaction among workplace attributes is what Vanderbilt professor Roland Rust calls service climate: "Those attributes of overall workplace climate that characterize how wellequipped employees are to deliver customer service, such as the adequacy of resources and equipment and job skills development." For every one percent increase in internal service climate there is a two percent increase in revenue. In cardiac care units where nurses' moods were depressed, patient death rates were four times higher than in comparable units. Cornell's School of Hotel Ad-

ministration found that employees' emotional commitment and sense of identity with the company is a key factor in providing excellent service. A study of call centers conducted by The Radclyffe Group found that "satisfied contact center employees make for satisfied and loyal customers... customers decide whether or not to make future purchasing decisions with a company, or to recommend its services to others, as a direct result of their experiences with a contact center representative... key indicators of contact center representative satisfaction include relationships with co-workers and management, job challenges, and frequency of development or training opportunities... sense of pride with their job and within the overall company."

This month I would like to address the subject of achieving success. Do you want success? Do you have a plan to achieve life and/or business success? Do you know what you want? Do you know what it looks like? Do you know what it is going to feel like when you achieve it? Have you imagined yourself actually accomplishing your dream? If you answered yes to all of these questions, I congratulate you. If you answered no to any one of the questions, you have come to the right place! As a life and business success coach, many clients come to me yearning for success in their lives. I tell them, success requires a dream and a personal vision attached to it, followed by a plan and a follow through with action and hard work. You really have to know where you are going, to begin to move in that direction. Movement without a clear goal produces muddled action and a waste of time and resources. On the path to success, there is one step that is usually missed or skipped and this is what I would like to discuss with you today -Visualization. One of the most important steps in achieving success is knowing what success looks like, feels like, and tastes like, to you. For example, if you want to be wealthy, what does wealth mean to you? Do you want thousands or millions or more? Image your bank statement with the account balance you want to achieve. What will it feel like to be rich? What will you wear? What will you drive? How will you live? How will you feel? Going through this process is vital. Oftentimes, we may want something in our conscious mind but subconsciously, we are not ready to receive it. This is a result of limiting beliefs deep down in our psyche which do not allow us to go beyond a limited frame resulting with the true reality of our potential becoming masked. Remember, perception always precedes reality. Many of you have heard, embraced, and implemented the teachings of “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne. Time and time again “The Secret” illustrates the power of the law of attraction. Michael S. Clouse says, “If you can see it in your mind, you can experience it in your life”. Similarly, visualization uses your imagination and mind to create pictures and visual images of what you strive to achieve in your lives. So, if what you think about, you bring about, visualization is the best tool to attract the life you want. Looking at this from a scientific point of view, our subconscious mind is controlling our future condition, be it successful or not. Interestingly, the subconscious state only

responds to images and emotions. Think about that for a second. What images are you repeating in your mind over and over again? Are they positive images or not? What about the feelings you associate with these images? Are your emotions positive or not? Visualization is an emotional process. When visualizing you must feel happiness and excitement as you attach your images to the experience. Without any feelings associated with the vision, it just isn’t quite as effective. For those of you less familiar with visualizations and have never performed this process, please allow me to guide you with the basic steps. 1. Find a suitable location to perform your visualization. Choose a calm, quiet place where you can relax for a few minutes. Make sure you have a comfortable seat and the lighting is not too bright as you will need to be in a state of relaxation. 2. Close your eyes or focus on an inanimate object. Slow down your breathing by taking long deep breaths for a few minutes until you feel truly relaxed. As you have relaxed, do not control your breathing but just observe your breathing pattern. 3. Start visualizing by focusing on the end result. Focus on what goal you want to achieve. Remember that details are very important. Color of your clothes, the smell of the air, the taste of what you are eating, the feel of the sun or coolness of the breeze. 4. Attach a positive emotional state to the images and vision you create. Embrace the feelings of success. Feel the joy and happiness of achieving your goal. Make your heart jump at the sight of achieving what you truly want and let this felling of happiness envelop you. 5. Create your visualization in the first person. Your vision must be from your viewpoint and not as a person would see you, as in a movie. This is where true feelings appear, as you are the one who is experiencing the moment of success.

6. Allocate the correct amount of time for visualization. Timings for this process vary from person to person. Some experts suggest a time equivalent to your age so, if you are 30 years old, you should visualize for half an hour. I recommend trying it out and getting a feel for a span of time that you are comfortable with in the beginning. Then, slowly, move towards the suggested timing. If you start with 10 to 30 minutes every day or every other day for visualizing your goal this should be sufficient. If you are having difficulty visualizing, you may want to use a vision board. John Assaraf champions the use of vision boards and has proven their effectiveness. This method is particularly effective in assisting those with lesser experience in visualization by allowing them to create images and emotions of what they would like to achieve. The steps to creating a vision board are very simple. First cut out pictures from magazines, photos, etc, ... associated with the life you want or the goals you would like to achieve. Take these pictures and assemble them together on a board in a collage. Make sure to place the board somewhere you can easily see and access to enable you to observe it during the visualization process. The vision board is an excellent tool in evoking emotional responses and assisting you in the visualization process. Dear readers, visualization is a very powerful tool but it is only one part of the success process. Planning and implementation must parallel your visualizations. Jim Carey shares his viewpoint on the subject by saying, "Visualization works, if you work hard." The power of visualization is great and is a vital step to putting you in the right frame of mind by creating a deep belief to allow you to achieve your dream. I wish you the best of luck in creating visions of your amazing future. If you would like more insight surrounding this subject, please feel free to contact me with your questions, queries, stories, or comments. I would love to hear from you!

An Arabic Raya of Sunshine Originally named Rana Alamuddin, the actress now known as Raya Meddine has benefitted from a lifetime of travel. Her father was a diplomat and she has lived in eight different countries, learning to speak fluently in Arabic, English, French, Italian and Spanish along the way. Raya is an acclaimed actress and a published writer, and has appeared in a variety of films and TV series including a principal role in almost 100 episodes of top American soap “The Young and the Restless” and, more recently, in the role of Annesha in the Hollywood blockbuster movie “Sex and the City 2”. CityPages caught up with Raya for this exclusive interview...

The first question that comes to anyone’s mind is obviously about the change of your name from Rana Alamuddin to Raya Meddine? What was the reason behind that? It’s actually a funny story. When I first arrived in L.A. my manager was sending me to auditions for Spanish and Latina roles because I speak and look Spanish. But the problem with that was that “rana” in Spanish means “frog” and it started bothering me after a while! I didn’t want to steer too far away from my original name so I just replaced Rana with Raya. As for my family name, the first time I was in Hollywood was not very long after 9/11. Stereotyping and prejudice against Arabs was at its peak and I didn’t want the industry to label me with “terrorist” roles or clichés of the “oppressed Arab woman” because of my family name. So I just shortened it to Meddine. Of course, I’m very proud of my heritage and in the Middle East I’m still known as Rana Alamuddin.

As one of the very few Arab actresses in Hollywood, how do you rate such an experience? I believe I’m the first Arab actress to have left her country to pursue a career in Hollywood. It’s been a great challenge and a wonderful journey of self-discovery all at the same time. Starting out is especially difficult given the vastly competitive industry and the unbelievable amount of work you need to do, both as an artist and as a human being. But I have to say it’s been a life-changing experience in which I’ve gathered strength, self-knowledge and clarity. I’m very happy with what I’ve done so far and very much look forward to what’s ahead.

What can you tell us about your childhood memories? I’ve been very blessed. My father was a diplomat and my mother an anthropologist so, along with my brother and sister, we spent our childhood and teenage years travelling from one country to the next. We lived in the United States as well as Tunisia, Yemen, Canada, Italy, Oman and Jordan. Very early on, a sense of world belonging, adventure and openness defined what life would be for me. I picked up many languages easily, felt like a citizen of the world and learned how to embrace 24 www.citypageskuwait.com

differences in cultures and eccentricities in individuals without prejudice. I feel so incredibly lucky to have had that kind of upbringing. And my parents were wonderful at instilling in us both a sense of pride in our Arab heritage as well as an open-mind to the infinite possibilities of the world.

What did you study? I went to French schools and then studied Communication Arts (Radio/TV/Film) at the Lebanese American University in Beirut. That’s where I consolidated my desire to become an actress and a writer.

Did you always wanted to be an Actress? I had been acting all my life ... even before I knew it. Performing commercials in our garden for my parents; doing the craziest and funniest impersonations for a living room filled with adults… I had a very deep imagination and was quite inclined and fearless about expressing my emotions. Let’s say shyness is definitely not an attribute of mine! I’m not sure anyone specific inspired me to become an actress but I do remember a moment when I was five years old. We lived in Yemen at the time and I was watching a black-and-white Egyptian movie. The lead actress was crying her heart out and I clearly remember thinking that when I’d grow up I wanted to cry like that too and not be afraid of showing my emotions… I guess I’ve always felt the need to be connected with my feelings and to express them without censorship. I find that liberating. I would suffocate otherwise.

How were you selected for a leading role in the American soap opera “The Young and The Restless”, and how was the experience? Like every other project in Hollywood, unless you’re an A-list celebrity you have to audition for a part. They were looking for a European woman to play the part of a sophisticated art consultant. My manager told the casting director that I spoke French, Italian and Spanish and that she should see me. I auditioned three times over a month and ended up booking the part. It was a wonderful experience on many levels. First of all, the Young and the Restless is considered to be the number one soap opera in the US and has been running for over thirty years, so it was

amazing to be part of this huge pop-culture machine with inconceivably loyal fans. After I left the show, I was moved to tears by the heart-warming fan letters and gifts I had received. Another highlight for me was working with renowned soap actor Eric Braeden, who played my husband on the show. My own father had passed away just the year before and Eric became not just a dear friend but somewhat of a father figure and protector for me at that time.

Which of the roles you have played has been your favourite so far? It’s hard to say because every part and every project brings something new to your life, to your growth and to your understanding of yourself. I have to say that playing the female lead in “To Hell with Meryl Streep”, directed by Nidal Al Achkar, was one of the most fulfilling experiences for me on a creative level. She is a brilliant, iconic woman and had a deep impact on me. Also having the chance to star alongside my husband Elie Karam in both the Arabic and French versions of the play in Beirut and Paris was an unforgettable experience that brought me so much joy and trust in acting. More recently, working on “Sex and the City 2”, although in a smaller part, was very fulfilling and exciting.

What are your future goals? I am currently writing my first feature film, which is about an Arab female action hero. It will be a USMiddle Eastern co-production filming in both parts of the world, and is a very exciting project in which I’m very involved. I’m also open and looking forward to doing more films, not just in Hollywood but all over the Middle East. I want to collaborate with talented writers, directors and producers in Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Egypt and the Arab Gulf, whilst also keeping my eyes on Europe. The fact that I’ve lived all over the world and speak many languages makes it hard for me to isolate myself in a bubble. I want to do more varied and adventurous work; to explore beyond safe

limits. I’m very much looking forward to that. On a more personal note, my husband and I are expecting our first baby soon, so that’s my favourite future goal by far!

What can you tell us about your experience in “Sex and The City 2”? It was a phenomenal experience on all levels. First of all, I’d been an obsessive fan of the Sex and the City TV series for years, meaning that I’ve watched every episode of every season several times, and that I know many of the dialogues by heart. So when I read they were looking for an Arab actress I immediately told my agent I was interested in auditioning. They were casting in NYC and London only, and not in L.A., so I was asked to put myself on tape and email it. That’s what I did, and I ended up being hired just off the tape. I never met the producers or director or cast members until my arrival in Morocco for the shoot. It was simply meant to be. The character of Annesha was one I related to and loved right away. I thought it was a wonderful representation of a modern Arab woman who is proud of her heritage and identity and is open to western culture at the same time. The character was classy yet playful, real yet unpredictable. What a woman is! I found it to be a positive image of Arab women in an American blockbuster and was happy to be part of that. We filmed in Morocco because production wasn’t allowed to shoot in Abu Dhabi (where the story actually takes place). It was heaven to be in Marrakech for three weeks, to discover this magical enchanting city and spend time with the girls, their children, the director and the producer. I have to say they are some of the classiest, most creative and kind people I’ve ever worked with.

What was the nature of your role in the movie “Al Bosta”? I played the role of Isabelle, a young journalist who’s striving for career fulfilment and love but ends up without either one.

What are the differences between Hollywood movies and movies made in the Middle East? 26 www.citypageskuwait.com

Many things. Budget, for one. As you know, there’s a lot of money poured into Hollywood films so development, pre-production, production and post-production happen at the highest levels of professionalism and expertise. Hollywood has been mastering the business of cinema for decades. Middle Eastern cinema, on the other hand, is in its infancy and it would be unfair to make a comparison. There is a wonderful pool of brilliant talent, and some beautiful films have recently emerged from the Middle East but, generally speaking, most artists have limited resources and opportunities. That being said, things are shifting dramatically: thanks to prominent film festivals and hefty deals between production companies, there is a lot of interest and funding available in the Arab Gulf to support a very healthy and innovative movie industry. I believe that,if we merge our artists with our investors, we will be very successful.

What do you believe to be your biggest achievement so far? That’s a very hard question to break down. I don’t see a specific moment or project or decision I made to be a better achievement than any other. I feel that having fought for the freedom to be my true self without fear or apologies has been my biggest achievement. And that includes my career choices, artistic choices, the way I choose to live my life and the man I’ve chosen as my life partner. Unfortunately, most Arab women have been raised to “people-please”, whether it’s pleasing their parents, their relatives, their community, their society or a man. That has been very detrimental in suppressing young women’s sense of confidence and empowerment in themselves. I feel that, in order to have a healthy striving society, there needs to be room for free, empowered women who are not punished for living out their true potential.

What can we expect from you in the near future? More parts for me in films around the world, as well as my own film, writing and artistic projects. It’s so important to keep generating your own projects and to not wait for other people to offer you jobs.

How often do you travel home to Lebanon? I was in Lebanon this past September. I hadn’t been there in three years so I was yearning to reconnect with my roots, my ancestors and my country. It was simply magical to rediscover what a rich, eclectic and poetic country I belong to. I was welcomed with so much love and appreciation, that it truly filled my heart with joy.

What message do you have for your fans in Kuwait? Know who you are. Embrace who you are. Love who you are. Never be afraid of what others think of you or tell you that you can’t do. You can create the reality you want for yourself.

Do you have a message for us at CityPages? Keep up your good work, always aspiring to reach new heights and break through old boundaries.

DR. NAZIA NAUSHEEN

Drink plenty of water this summer What’s the first thing that comes to our minds, the moment we think of summer? Sweat. And lots of sweat! While we may opt to wear loose cotton clothing to keep the heat from getting to us during the summers, there is no denying the perspiration or sweat as most of us call it. But sweating is good! It helps rid the body of toxins Sure, sweating is good and it does help to rid the body of its toxins. But at the same time it results in the body losing precious water as sweat mainly contains water and other vital minerals such as potassium, sodium, copper, calcium and so on, which are needed by the body for its normal functioning. So, as you can see that while sweating has its pro’s, it has its cons too! The average normal human body temperature is about 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the temperature at which the body is comfortable and wants to stay. When the weather gets above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the only way for the body to cool itself and stay at 98.6 degrees is to sweat. Sweating is effective in keeping the body at its normal temperature, but the body has to have plenty of water to produce sweat. When your body runs out of water, you can overheat quickly. Your body produces about half a gallon of sweat every hour in a hot environment, and unless you are drinking water at the same rate that you are losing it, you will dehydrate and stop sweating. High humidity also can cause the body to overheat because it prevents sweat from evaporating. If body temperature rises to 106 degrees, heat stroke can occur. Heat stroke is a life-threatening situation and medical treatment is required to prevent brain damage or even death. Death can occur in as little as 30 minutes.

Children also can suffer from heat stroke if they are left in a hot car. Do not leave a child (or a pet) inside of a parked car for any length of time. The temperature inside a car can reach more than 140 degrees in as little as 15 minutes and leaving a window cracked does not help. Luckily, heat stroke can be prevented by drinking a lot of fluids before and during activity that involves exposure to extreme heat. Even if your child doesn’t say he or she is thirsty, they still should drink because usually by the time you’re thirsty you’re already dehydrated. Caffeinated drinks should be avoided because they can cause dehydration. Dress your child in lightweight, loose fitting, lightcolored clothing. Try to schedule outdoor activities for cooler times of the day (morning or evening). Have your child play in shaded areas. On very hot, humid days, try to spend as much time indoors as possible. If your child appears to be suffering from heat stroke, seek emergency medical attention if they’re dizzy or unconscious. The first thing you need to do is cool your child down. Take them indoors and have them drink water if they’re not unconscious. Soak your child’s entire body in cool water or give your child a sponge bath using cool water. Apply ice packs to the head, neck, armpits and groin.

Simple ways to increase our water intake are by opting for foods with high water content such as: Leafy green vegetables – Lettuce, spinach, cabbage and radish.

l

l Watermelons are a huge favorite during the summers and rightly so, as they contain a high water content owing to the fact that almost 90% of the watermelon is water! Melons too are a great source of high water content food, during summer. l Tomatoes are also an excellent choice when it comes to foods with high water content. l Fruits too are an excellent high water content food choice, especially apples and citrus fruits (sweet lemon, orange). l Coconut water is another excellent summer beverage, as it is isotonic in nature. In layman’s term it means that coconut water contains similar vital minerals, which are lost due to sweat and urine.

Symptoms of heat stroke include red, hot dry skin, rapid heart rate, dizziness and confusion. The skin becomes red and hot because the skin blood vessels expand to try to release heat. Dizziness and confusion occur because high body temperature affects the brain. A person suffering from heat stroke also might have nausea, fast breathing and abdominal pain. Heat stroke can occur whenever the body is exposed to extreme temperatures. Children are especially prone to suffer when temperatures rise. When playing outside, children should drink plenty of liquids to ensure their body can stay cool.

A science-based monthly column based upon the U. S. National Institute of Health ‘Clinical Guidelines on the Treatment of Overweight and Obesity’

Lighten Up Kuwait© - 2012

With the New Science of Weight Control© Let’s Make A Diet! Getting Started A Formula for Success! 1. You must understand the problem 2. You must have a plan for dealing with the problem 3. You must then follow the plan! I know this to be a successful formula. Over the years I have witnessed many thousands of patients achieve permanent control over their weight problem with this simple formula.

Science Based Fact Your heredity hormonesdecide if youcan gain weight. Your choice of foods determines if youwill gain weight! This is true but it is a mistake to under-play the role of personal choices. In the final analysis, it was your choice to eat sugar, oil, bread, chocolates, etc., and sit without exercising which together determined how much weight you gained. Tonya was a frustrated 26-year-old patient. “Dr. Green, my friends and I eat the very same foods and do the same form of exercise. We are all about the same height, but they weigh less than 57 kilograms. I have not weighed that since I was twelve years old. I’ve always had a weight problem and they never had one. Why?” In Tonya’s case the environment is the same, the personal food choices are the same, but heredity overpowers both causing obesity for Tonya and thinness for her friends. It is not fair, but we all know life is seldom fair. The bad news for Tonya is that her heredity is very strong. The good news is that when Tonya finally understood her weight problem she wasfinally able to gain control.

Science Based Fact The sooner you understand and accept you own problem, the sooner you will be able to control your problem.

Understanding the Words One of the major recurring problems with physicians who treat weight issues, even university obesity researchers, refuseto correct the meaning of the words they use with patients.

Science Based Fact If the vocabulary is wrong, the diet can never be right. Two studies published in the May 2003 issue of the New England Journal of Medicineused confusing words in an article pertaining to a high fat, high protein diet and a low fat, high carbohydrate diet. News articles repeated their mistakes whenthey used the term carbohydrate without telling us if they meant processed carbohydrate or unprocessed carbohydrate. 30 www.citypageskuwait.com

Why is this important? The correct use of words is very important. There is a huge difference between the meaning and implications of these two very different terms. For example, a large body of science based-evidence tells us that processed carbohydrates: • • • • • •

Stimulate hunger Build fat easily Cause overweight and obesity Oppose weight loss Promote disease Push the wrong hormone buttons.

On the other hand, unprocessed carbohydrates: • Do not stimulate hunger • Do not build fat easily • Actually aid weight loss • Push the right hormone buttons. Clearly then, unprocessed carbohydrates(fruits& vegetables) are the goodguys, and processed carbohydrates (sugar, candy, most bread, pasta, cake, most cereals) are the bad guys. Obviously no legitimate comparisons can be made between weight loss diets without carefully making adefinite distinction between these two very different terms.

Science Based Fact You cannot be successful managing your weight problem unless youMean What You Say, and Say What You Mean. Famous physicians constantly mis-use dietary terminology! They all do it. Bestsellingauthors offer no protection whatever from this common and confusing error. Fred was a 44-year-old government lawyer. I could always count on him to ask goodquestions. “Dr. Green, I am confused. Which diet is best, the high carbohydrate diet, the high protein diet, or the high fat diet?” This is really agreat question that everyone asks. In order to answer clearly and accurately we must first answer another question! Precisely what is meant by: • The word diet • The word carbohydrate • The word fat • The word protein

Definition #1 Diet: The word diet comes from the Greek language and means AWay of Life.

However, in everyday American English it has come to mean a weight reducing regimen, as in the Sonoma Diet®, the Abs Diet®, Atkins® Diet, the Pritikin® Diet, the DeanOrnish® Diet, the Mayo Clinic® Diet, the Duke University® Diet, and the South Beach® Diet. The original Greek meaning of diet conveys a very powerful idea. In order to be healthy and happy for a lifetime one must have a diet for … a lifetime!

Definition #4 Unprocessed carbohydrates (good guys) are the carbohydrates in whole fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, grains etc. in their natural state just as they appear in nature, or just as they come from the farmer’s field. So long as carbohydrates are unprocessed, they retain their tough outer coating of cellulose and bran, as well as their full complement of vitamins and minerals. This natural configuration:

Definition #2

• Slows digestion and absorption

Carbohydrate: The word carbohydrate has a very

specific meaning in biochemistry. This formal meaning is excessivelycomplicated for this article and is useful only for theprofessional chemist. In general, sugars built in plants from sunlight and carbon dioxide arecalled carbohydrates or starches. Glycogen is the name given to sugars stored within animals. Most commonly in plants the sugars are chemically stuck together in chains like pearls on a string.

Definition #3 The terms simple and complex carbohydrate, in reality, have no meaning at all. Technically, carbohydrates are classified as monosaccharaides (single sugars), disaccharides (double sugars), tri-saccharides (triple sugars), polysaccharides (many sugars), and heterosaccharides (mixed sugars). No science-based authority or dictionary defines a simple or complex carbohydrate. These terms are confusing, mean differing things to different authors, and should be avoidedespecially when discussing dieting for weight loss.

• Will not cause insulin resistance • Will not cause abdominal obesity and associated diseases.

will be digested and absorbed • The more insulin will be produced • The more abdominal fat will be built and stored

Definition #6 Abdominal Obesity is fat storage inside the abdominal wall and is associated with diets rich in processed carbohydrates. Abdominal obesity causes insulin resistance (beginning of diabetes), hypertension (high blood pressure), adult onset diabetes, heart disease, strokes, some forms of cancer and early death!

Definition #7

Definition #5 Processed carbohydrates (bad guys) are un-processed carbohydrates after they have been modified by milling, grinding, cooking, juicing, etc. Examples of processed carbohydrates are: • Sugar (processed from beets or cane) • Honey (nectar, processed by the bees) • Corn syrup • High fructose sweeteners • Milled and ground grains and their products including bread, cookies, pasta, bagels, pancakes, corn chips, corn bread and cereals, (excepting 100% bran). The milling and grinding of grains disrupts the protective natural architectural structure of the grain and fragments the internal starch (sugar) chains into smaller starch (sugar) units allowing speedy digestion and absorption, which • Increases hunger hormones •Delays hormones that make you feel full • Promotes rapid sugar absorption • Promotes insulin resistance • Promotes fat building • Promotes fat storage, especially in the abdominal region. For our purposes then, the major difference between processed and unprocessed carbohydrate is the amount of processing that has occurred. This is an important concept because the more processing that occurs: • The more the natural packaging (fiber) surrounding the sugar chains will be disrupted • The smaller the starch (sugar) particles will ultimately be • The faster the starch (sugar)

Insulin resistance (the cause of adult diabetes) is a condition wherein insulin becomes less and less effective thus requiring more and more insulin to do the same job. Insulin resistance iscaused by diets rich in processed carbohydrates.

Science Based Fact The more processing the carbohydrate has undergone, the faster the digestion and absorption. Repetitive ingestion of processed carbohydrates is closely associated with The Metabolic Syndrome: insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, hypertension, elevated blood fats and heart disease. Ed was a 26-year-old unmarried lawyer who presented to my office with new onset stress, fatigue, thirst, frequent urination and difficulty controlling his weight. Prior to law school Ed had been an athlete, playing college level football, baseball and golf. Fitness was a life long passion and though work was putting serious demands on his time, he still lifted weights for an hour, two days each week, and ran one hour, two to three days weekly. On presentation: A fasting blood sugar of over 200 with symptoms of new onset fatigue, thirst, and frequent urination was sufficient to diagnosis Ed as a new diabetic. And if we consider that his father was also a diabetic we can add validity to the diagnosis. Recall that diabetes is very strongly hereditary. Ed’s BMI of 30.16 indicates that he is also obese. His waist, having increased from 32” to 36” indicates abdominal obesity, which tells us that he also has insulin resistance, which explains his metabolic syndrome; that is, his diabetes, hypertension, and elevated cholesterol. Metabolic syndrome is a strong predictor of heart disease, cancer, stroke and early death! Ed’s dietary history was very interesting indeed. He reported frequently skipping breakfast and lunch to save calories. Prior to every work-out he ate a power bar and drank a power drink. Both products are popular with weight lifters and are readily available for purchase in fitness facilities. On examination of the labels of these products, what do you think we found? Benefits of Tomatoes Tomatoes! They’re sweet, juicy, and delicious. Everyone knows they are good for you, right? Uh, yeah, sure. Does everyone know specifically why tomatoes are a healthful food? Ummm… They have vitamin C? They’re low in calories? They’re fatfree? Yes, yes, and yes, but that’s not all! Let’s look at what makes the tomato an excellent healthy choice. One serving of red, ripe, raw tomatoes (one cup or 150 grams) is a good source of Vitamins A, C, K, folate and potassium. Tomatoes are naturally low in sodium, saturated fat, cholesterol, and calories. Tomatoes also provide thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, magnesium, phosphorus and copper, all of which are necessary for good health. On top of that, one serving of tomatoes gives you 2 grams of fiber, which is 7% of the daily recommended amount. Tomatoes also have a relatively high water content, which makes them a filling food. In general eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, confers protection against high blood pressure, high cholesterol, strokes, and heart disease. One tomato packs one powerful punch of nutrition, but there’s much more! Healthy Skin

helps to regulate blood sugar.

Tomatoes make your skin look great. Beta-carotene, also found in carrots and sweet potatoes, helps protect skin against sun damage. Tomatoes’ lycopene also makes skin less sensitive to UV light damage, a leading cause of fine lines and wrinkles.

Vision

Strong Bones Tomatoes build strong bones. The vitamin K and calcium in tomatoes are both very good for strengthening and repairing bones. Lycopene also has been shown to improve bone mass, which is a great way to fight osteoporosis.

Fight Cancer Tomatoes are a natural cancer fighter. Lycopene (again!) can reduce the risk of several cancers, including prostate, cervical, mouth, pharynx, throat, esophagus, stomach, colon, rectal, prostate and ovarian cancer. Tomatoes’ antioxidants (vitamins A and C) fight the free radicals which can cause cell damage.

Blood Sugar Tomatoes can keep your blood sugar in balance. Tomatoes are a very good source of chromium, which

Tomatoes can improve your vision. The vitamin A that tomatoes provide can improve vision and help prevent night blindness. Recent research shows that consuming tomatoes may help reduce the risk of macular degeneration, a serious and irreversible eye condition.

Hair Tomatoes will even make your hair look better. The vitamin A found in tomatoes works to make hair strong and shiny. (Sorry, tomatoes cannot help much with thinning hair—but they will make the hair you have look better!)

Prevent Kidney Stones and Gallstones Tomatoes can help prevent kidney stones and gallstones. Some studies suggest that kidney and gall stones are less likely to form in people who eat tomatoes without the seeds.

matoes may be a pain-buster. Tomatoes are high in bioflavonoids and carotenoids, which are known antiinflammatory agents. Chronic pain often involves chronic inflammation, so attacking the inflammation is a good way to fight the chronic pain. (Many commercial drugs that fight pain are actually anti-inflammatory drugs.)

Loose Weight Tomatoes can help you lose weight. If you are on a sensible diet and exercise plan, build lots of tomatoes into your everyday eating. They make a great snack and can be used to “bulk up” salads, casseroles, sandwiches and other meals. Because tomatoes contain lots of water and fiber, they are what Weight Watchers calls a “filling food,” one of those foods that fills you up fast without adding a lot of calories or fat.

Chronic Pain Tomatoes can reduce chronic pain. If you are one of the millions of people who deal with mild to moderte chronic pain (such as from arthritis or back pain), to33 May 2012

AYESHAH AL-HUMAIDHI

Wild Animals as Pets; I Think Not Wild animals being presented as gifts to royalty has a long history in the Arab World. Amirs and Kings have always possessed private collections and many zoos in the area began with donations from these very collections. Unfortunately, in the recent past, we have seen a growing trend of wild animals being kept as pets by citizens of this country. It is an extremely disturbing and dangerous trend, not to mention very unethical.

In

addition to pet ownership on the rise in Kuwait, wild animal ownership is too. On any day of the week, one can spot a young man racing down the Gulf Road on his motorcycle with a monkey on his back, or someone walking their cheetah on a leash along the seaside. Not only are these actions highly dangerous, but they question the moral fabric of our society. In December 2009, I got a call from the Royal Animal Hospital stating that an individual had come in with 3 newborn Striped Hyenas. I quickly learned that these

34 www.citypageskuwait.com

babies were stolen from a den in Yemen, sold illegally in Saudi Arabia than smuggled across the border into Kuwait. When asked what his intentions were of owning these hyenas, he said he wanted to cross breed them with dogs and sell them. The hair on the back of my neck stood on end. What has happened to our culture and our values that someone would think this is alright? Fortunately or unfortunately for these hyenas, this man did not know how to care for them and by the time he brought them into the veterinary clinic, they were severely dehydrated and hypothermic and he could

not afford the necessary medical treatment. I was able to talk him into surrendering the poor creatures. One cub died at the clinic before he had an opportunity to reach my house but the two little girls arrived within a couple hours. One cub did not survive the night but the last little one let us know with her extremely loud call for milk that she was not giving up and she fought for her life. After a couple days when it was apparent she was going to survive, we decided to name her. After

raided when the mother is out looking for food, you mothers out there please take a moment to imagine the emotional anguish these mothers experience when they come back and find their babies gone. We know that animals are sentient beings and you only have to watch a mother dog protect her pups to know their maternal instinct is extremely strong. The idea that we would torture an animal for our personal gratification is sickening and tells of the ills in our society. And finally, many of these species are endangered. The Cheetah is one such species and with each one we steal out of the wild translates into one less animal that can possibly breed to help the species survive. Our acts are destroying the environment around us and we will suffer in turn. some thought, we named her “Ayana” which means beautiful flower in Swahili. If you have set eyes on a Striped Hyena, you know that beautiful isn’t really an apt description of their physical appearance but her spirit was exactly that. Ayana stayed in our home for 4 months while we bottle fed her, cared for her and loved her. We watched her personality bloom as she discovered how strong her jaws were, how loud her voice was and that it was great fun to hide under the grill cover by the back door and scare the life out of people as they walked by. Although Ayana was completely imprinted on humans having been hand raised by one, socially raised by a pack of 5 dogs (she even sat on command for a treat and walked on leash) as she reached her 3 month birthday, it was clear that despite all our love, this animal was quickly becoming unsafe to be kept in a home. Her predatory drive would kick in when she saw my toddler move, her play bite was becoming increasingly more painful breaking skin and she was less and less willing to take direction from humans. We worked quickly to find her suitable placement and she was moved to the Al-Ain Wildlife Park at the age of 4 months. Why do I tell this story? I tell it because I know what it is like to live with a wild animal. Although she saw me as her mother, and was raised and loved like any of my dogs, she wasn’t. She didn’t belong with us and it was cruel and immoral to keep her. In animal welfare we refer to the five freedoms when referring to an animal having adequate quality of life. And they are: 1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst 2. Freedom from Discomfort 3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease 4. Freedom to Express Normal Behavior 5. Freedom from Fear and Distress Although I could afford Ayana most of the freedoms, there was one freedom lacking and that is the fourth; freedom to express normal behavior. Ayana could never act like a normal Hyena in my home and that

meant I was not affording her adequate quality of life. This is the case for all wild animals being kept as pets. Taking a wild animal out of its natural habitat and putting it into an alien environment such as our homes, means we are causing unjust suffering to that animal, plain and simple. In addition to wild animal pets not being able to express normal behavior, they are often suffering discomfort from inadequate housing and are experiencing fear and distress mentioned in freedoms two and five. Just because one provides food, water and vet care to their animal, that does not translate into responsible ownership or a happy animal. This is the case of all the big cats that we see being kept as pets in Kuwait. As an animal behaviorist and a person that does not anthropomorphize an animal’s needs and emotions, I know that every single one of them is suffering and most are in silent agony. In addition to the suffering that these animals endure, keeping wild animals as pets is dangerous. It is not possible to domesticate a wild animal by loving it as I experienced with Ayana and they will always retain their wild behavior and strength. They are capable of expressing these behaviors at any time especially when feeling fear and distress. This was exemplified by Travis, the Chimpanzee, that was adopted at 3 days old and kept as a pet for 14 years. Although treated like a member of the family, Travis suddenly attacked a friend of the family causing her severe injury. Despite chimpanzees being highly intelligent creatures and with all the love in the world, in a certain situation, this animal could not control his natural impulses as a wild animal. Although this story was front page news only 3 years ago, we still see parents buying Baboons to play with their children. Baboons are amongst the most aggressive monkeys and are extremely dangerous. This could happen to any of us or our children!

In addition to the dangers of their behavior, certain wild animals are vectors for extremely dangerous diseases. Baboons are a prime example. Baboons are stolen from their mothers in Tayef, Saudi Arabia, smuggled into Kuwait then sold at the Friday Market as cute pets. But they are a far cry from that. Not only are they highly aggressive and dangerous behaviorally, they also carry Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and HIV; all very dangerous and often fatal diseases. Macaques are carriers of Herpes B virus, also a very serious disease. All monkeys are vectors for Measles, Rabies, Tuberculosis and bacteria such as salmonella, campylobacter, internal and external parasites and fungal infections such as ring worm. Because I loved Ayana and I put her quality of life before my emotions, I had to let her go. If you are someone who likes animals, you would do the same by prioritizing the needs of the animal – wild or companion – before selfish human desires. There are other steps you can take to protect wildlife. Discourage friends and relatives from bringing home a wild animal as a pet. Encourage those who already have one to reflect upon the animal’s quality of life vis-à-vis the five freedoms and to make a responsible decision by finding it a better home in a sanctuary for instance. Find out which animal and bird species are classified as wildlife, endangered or on the verge of extinction as per the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES); help to put an end to their smuggling and illegal trade by not purchasing such animals as pets from any source within or outside Kuwait.

The immorality runs even deeper. Most wild animals are poached out of the wild when they are merely days old. Mother often have to be killed to take these animals since they will protect their babies to the bitter end. If they are not killed and instead a den is 35 May 2012

PASSION FOR FASHION It is not often you meet a genuine enigma, but Areej Hamada is one. Areej Hamada is a young passionate Kuwaiti fashion designer. She represents her designs in a unique style which makes her designs different from others. The amount of imagination she puts in her designs with a mixture of passion makes the designs more beautiful. Although she has recently started her online brand elevados, it has really gained popularity not only in Kuwait but also in other Gulf countries. We met with Areej to know more about her and her passion for fashion which we bring for you here:

Hi Areej, please introduce yourself to our readers.. My name is Areej Hamada. I am a Lawyer. I graduated from the Kuwait University and I completed 1 year of Masters in Commercial Law in Banking Regulations and International Investments. I worked for a long time in the Private sectors and now moved to the public sector so that I can have more time for my hobby which is Fashion Designing and also for my family.

How did you get into fashion design? Since I was a child, my hobby was fashion. I was attracted to elegant women. I started with practicing designing for myself. Later when I got recognition from family and friends, I started getting requests from my friends to design something special for them and with their encouragement turned my hobby into my private work and I used to design only during Ramadan and in limited quantities. But now, I design for all seasons.

Where did you go to school? What did you study? I graduated from the college of Legal Rights at the Kuwait University and I believe my personality is half Legal and half fashion both of which are totally different.

Did you have to train or apprentice with another designer? How was that? No, it was a hobby which I developed by myself and then gradually turned it into a business.

Describe your philosophy about the art of fashion. Designing is an explosion of creativity and art in the form of mixing of threads and colors. Mixing of past and future. World of fashion is not easy. Specially because most of the girls now follow what is latest in fashion and

How much do you think you’ve come on since your first collection? 36 www.citypageskuwait.com

I believe I have achieved a lot in a short while and now come to a much refined and developed stage. I officially started designing since August 2010. At the same time my

What about fashion as a business? Very interesting. Specially when I get so many good compliments from everywhere.

How did you come up with the name for your label? I love Spain. I decided to name by label in Spanish. Elevados is a Spanish-Italian word which means: elevated, high, and elegant. I then added the KW part to ad the Kuwaiti personality to it.

What skills do you need to be a fashion designer? I believe development, innovation, accuracy in work and discipline in work and staying away from Copy/Paste attitude.

What inspires your designs? Everything from nature. I like the colors of the rainbow. The wings of butterflies. I love the way the colors are mixed. I am also inspired by the desert and the sea. I often try to do the photo shoot of my collection on the place on which it is based.

How often do you come up with your new collection? There is no specific time but it depends on whenever I get a new inspiration or an idea.

Do you think having a strong sense of sewing skills is important in fashion design? As far as you follow the right steps and procedures, I don’t think it is important for the designer to know sewing. However, knowing sewing can always help the designer and make his work easier.

Who would you like to see wearing Areej Hamada designs? All the distinguished and attractive women.

Have you participated in any regional or international fashion shows? No, I have not participated except for the Proud to Be Kuwaiti exhibition. I rely on my website totally and I advertise through my facebook page and twitter.

If you could do anything else, what would it be? I am satisfied with what I am.

The best to come. Only Allah Almighty knows the future but my desires are limitless

What advice do you have for young women who want to be fashion designers in Kuwait? Try to innovate and be different. And stay away from copy paste

Bring Up the Bodies

This is the remarkable story of one endearing dog’s search for his purpose over the course of several lives. Though he battled for seven years to marry her, Henry is disenchanted with Anne Boleyn. She has failed to give him a son and her sharp intelligence and audacious will alienate his old friends and the noble families of England. The Newlyweds

Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake

Calico Joe by John Grisham takes place in the summer of 1973. It is a baseball story, but also a story about fathers and sons and forgiveness. In the vein of Bleachers and Playing for Pizza, Grisham returns with another story of sports and hope.

Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake is a memoir by former New York Timescolumnist and Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Quindlen. In it, she explores her life and the lives of women today.

Deadlocked

Augusten Burroughs

Charlaine Harris

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Running With Scissors comes a groundbreaking book that explores how to survive the "un-survivable" and will challenge your notion of self-help books To say that Augusten Burroughs has lived an unusual life is an understatement. From having no formal education past third grade and being raised by his mother’s psychiatrist in the seventies to enjoying one of the most successful advertising careers of the eighties to experiencing a spectacular downfall and rehab stint in the nineties to having a number one bestselling writing career in the new millennium, Burroughs has faced humiliation, transformation and everything in between.

Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Series, which started with Dead Until Dark and inspired the HBO series True Blood, marks its twelfth novel in the series with Deadlocked. Unfortunately, we thought the eleventh novel, Dead Reckoning, was one of the most disappointing books of 2011. If you are a Harris fan, will you give her another chance withDeadlocked?

AVENTADORJ

RADICALLY OPEN EXTREMELY POWERFUL At the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Automobili Lamborghini presented the most uncompromising open super sports car of its entire history. The Lam¬borghini Aventador J is a force of nature on wheels – supremely powerful and supremely open. The Aventador J offers its pilot and co-pilot an utterly indescribable experience of power and dynamics. At the same time, the 515 kW / 700 hp two-seater is a first class technology showcase, com¬bining innovative solutions and brand new materials and demonstrating Automobili Lamborghini’s enormous expertise in carbon fiber technology. The Lamborghini Aventador J is a radically open automobile – exterior and interior meld into each other. The designers and engineers in Sant’Agata Bolognese have not only dispensed entirely with the roof, but also with the front windshield. This requires that drivers of the Aventador J must have the right equipment for driving at top speeds higher than 300 Km/h. This kind of driving at the limit is a highly exclusive experience – the Lamborghini Aventador J is fully functional for road use. It is an absolute one-off: a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

46 www.citypageskuwait.com

The Lamborghini Aventador J is a super sports car of positively dramatic singlemindedness and openness. It combines the overwhelming performance of the Lamborghini Aventador with the most intense experience of power and dynamics imaginable in an automobile. The technical basis for the Aventador J is the Aventador LP 700-4, Lamborghini’s new twelve-cylinder model. Presented in 2011, the Aventador has been acclaimed by customers and journalists alike. The Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4’s technol¬ogy package is unique – its structure is based on an innovative monocoque made from carbon fiber reinforced polymers that combines systematic lightweight design with optimum stiffness and safety. The new twelve-cylinder with a displacement of 6.5 liters and 515 kW / 700 hp combines the best in high-revving thrills with mighty pulling power. Its super-fast ISR transmission, permanent all-wheel drive and push-rod suspension combine this potent power with the utmost handling precision.

Naturally, the Aventador J benefits enormously from this unique technology package. Yet the Aventador J has a signifi¬cantly different interpretation to the Aventador coupé. In this open version, the monocoque has a largely new design, including the two safety bars behind the seats. The absence of a roof, of the large windshield, of the air conditioning system and of the navigation system obviously takes it to an even lower weight. With a dry weight of 1575 kilograms, the series production Aventador LP 700-4 is already extremely light for its performance class thanks to its carbon fiber construction. The front of the Aventador J is somewhat narrower than that of the Aventador. The front end is dominated by a highly distinctive carbon fiber air scoop, with central fixing braces and upward tilting winglets on the outer edges. Viewed from the side, the front end of the Aventador J looks like a Formula 1 racing car. The Aventador J’s exterior and interior forms flow seamlessly into each other. This supersports car turns its inside out¬ward and is as open as it can possibly be. Conversely, the exterior ‘flows’ through the interior – a red stripe runs from the front hood, between the two wind deflectors, over the dashboard, down the console to the center tunnel and back up between the seat backs, before leaving the interior and heading for the engine cover panel. However, at the end of the Geneva Motor Show, this sight is the preserve of just one – the owner of the Lamborghini Aventador J. There is only one of them, no prototypes and no others for the Lamborghini Museum. The buyer can look forward to a truly unique, street-legal work of art. He will possess the most extreme expression of Lamborghini DNA in existence and a real masterpiece of high technology. But the many other fans of the super sports cars from Sant’ Agata Bolognese can rest assured - the Aventador success story has only just begun.

Prada Resort 2012

Prada Resort 2012 collection is the clever combination of modern trends and those of the past. Vintage comes very close with contemporary fashion. Clothing in Alexa Chung’s style are combined with accessories Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian would opt for big events. Interested? Then see the collection!

Prada Resort 2012 collection is an amazing combination of vintage-inspired clothing and uber modern accessories. Mini dresses, skirts, shorts, and tops featured all kinds of small prints, everything from floral brights to grids and dots. Must-have accessories included patterned foulards, berets, stylish bags, aviator sunglasses and ladylike pumps, mules and sandals. Clothing in Prada Resort 2012 collection looked very elegant. Prints were interesting but sometimes the combination of those looked a bit strange. If earlier designers had offered us to limit ourselves to one, maximum two prints, for Resort 2012 Prada suggests us experimenting with at least three ones. The only rule she establishes is not to use huge prints. Returning to accessories in Prada Resort 2012 collection I have to confess I’ve fallen in love with Prada shoes. My favorite pick is a pair of feminine black sandals with a criss-cross detail in front. I also love the simple green leather clutch and the bigger black one with red heart print all over it. 52 www.citypageskuwait.com

Get the Celeb Look:

What to Wear to Work So you nailed your dream job or internship, but are bored to death by the pantsuits, sweater sets, and button-downs that define “business casual”? You’re not alone. Even stars have to work it sometimes, and for press junkets, fashion launches, and special appearances they need looks that are somewhere between red carpet glam and grabbing a latte in leggings. Don’t have a stylist? Let Emmy Rossum, Clémence Poésy, and Rachel Bilson show you how to put together looks that are professional enough for work, but still playful.

1

2 3

4 Tip # 1 Button up a chiffon blouse with a jacquard pencil skirt.

5

Tip #1: Button up a chiffon blouse with a jacquard skirt. At a Jason Wu for Target launch, actress Emmy Rossum looked pretty and polished in a palette of blushes and greys, which are soft and flattering even under harsh office fluorescents. Rossum played it on the dressier side, using pieces in feminine fabrics like a chiffon blouse and jacquard pencil skirt, which give the look a classy and chic feel and could easily transition to evening drinks. Her sixties hair and earrings make the look even more fashion-forward.

Tip #2: Mix subtle patterns in muted colors. Clémence Poésy looked tomboy-chic at the Burberry show during London Fashion Week. Her look was understated for fashion week, but perfect for the office. She picked two subtle patterns, polka dot and tweed, and mixed them effortlessly by sticking to neutral colors. Adding socks is an easy way to dress down your favorite pointed toe pumps for work.

Tip #3: Pick a pair of wide leg pants in a bright color. An easy way to make a statement at work is by wearing one bold piece. Swish through the cubicles in a pair of wide leg pants in a bright color like the pair Rachel Bilson wore to a Sunglass Hut event. She made the power suit silhouette fresh by swapping the button-down for a scoop neck tee but kept the look professional with a slouchy blazer layered over the top.

MINIMALISM MEETS MAXIMALISM FOR WOMEN THIS AUTUMN AT H&M

Minimal meets maximal at H&M this autumn, as sleek and sculptural silhouettes are matched with bold shapes and confident decoration. Separates are key, like a cocoon coat with kimono sleeves in tweed, or a double-breasted black tailored coat that’s given a sporty 90s feeling when worn with a hoodie beneath and hidden-platform hi-top sneakers. Pants are crucial, from tailored slacks with a zippered ankle to leggings in vivid colour abstract nature prints. Texture plays an important role, with bouclé sweatshirts, oversized cable knit cardigans and sweaters decorated with plumes of hair. Accessories are vital: as well as elegant costume jewellery bracelets, pearl necklaces and drop earrings, there are jewelled shoulder pieces to help maximalise the sleekest of minimal outfits. "I love how there are so many options this autumn, and ways to show the different sides of your personality. The sleek and minimal pieces feel fresh and modern, and look so great when worn with the new textures, shapes and decorative touches that maximalism brings,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s head of design.
