Installation of steel struts continues on Albert St

On Albert Street, between Wyndham and Swanson Streets, the top 1.5 metres of roadway is being progressively removed to allow the installation of an extensive steel support structure.

This structure will hold piled retaining walls apart during the CRL tunnel excavation along Albert Street and will also support a pre-cast concrete deck that enables the entire excavation to be completed while maintaining a lane of traffic in each direction.

In the coming months, this operation will progress towards Custom Street and is expected to be complete in October.

During this time, our contractors Connectus, will also start excavating down to the level of the CRL, progressively moving north from the Wyndham Street end.

At the Albert/Customs St intersection, construction is underway on the third portion of the traffic deck, which will form part of a bridge structure that spans the entire intersection, allowing all four traffic lanes to be re-established while the CRL tunnels are constructed underneath.

Now that the stormwater replacement has been completed, the shafts that received the tunnel boring machines will be sealed and back-filled. This will allow the hoardings and construction sites to be removed from Swanson and Wellesley Streets.

The two shafts at Victoria Street will remain in place until September while strengthening of the Orakei Main Sewer is undertaken. This work is required before the start of construction on the future midtown station.

Historic artefacts found during CRL excavations

Interesting historical artefacts continue to be found during CRL excavation works.

Five vessels have been found behind the Chief Post Office building. These include (left to right): • the top of a two-toned salt-glazed stoneware beer bottle from the 19th century.

• a topless aerated stoneware water bottle with a dark brown glaze, embossed with ‘Victorian Selters Water Ballan’ surrounding the monogram ‘JM’. The Ballan mineral water spring located in Ballan, Victoria, Australia, appears to have been first identified during the early 19th century. The Victorian Selters Water was reportedly introduced to the Australian public by Messrs. Joske and Morton during the summer of 1867-68.

• a green ‘Bordeaux’ shape wine bottle, commonly found on 19th to early 20th century

historic sites in New Zealand.

• an aqua Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce bottle with glass stopper and cork surround intact. The lip is applied (not machine made) and the base embossed with the maker’s mark ‘A.C.B & Co’. Lea & Perrins was first produced in about 1840 and this particular bottle dates from the c1850s-1877.

• a topless aqua ‘Hamilton Torpedo’ style aerated water bottle.

Hamilton torpedo bottles were first patented by William Hamilton in 1814. Hamilton designed the torpedo patent to solve the problem of the corks in aerated water bottles drying out and shrinking which allowed the gas inside the bottle to escape.

With the new design, the bottles could only be laid on their sides and the corks subsequently remained wet – sealing in the gas that kept the

water aerated. Torpedo patent bottles continued to be manufactured until c.1870s until new aerated water bottles arrived on the market that could be successfully stored upright while retaining their effervescence.

This particular bottle is embossed with J. Grey Auckland. John Grey bought the aerated water manufacturing company at Eden Crescent, Auckland, from Charles Sutton in 1874. In 1880, Grey’s sons joined the business and the trading name was changed to John Grey & Sons. This bottle therefore dates to between 1874 and 1880.

Two stoneware preserve bottles and a shard of earthenware ceramic from a serving platter with the decorative Willow Pattern design have been recovered from a services trench being dug in Galway Street. These types of items commonly date back to the mid to late 1800s and are estimated to be at least 150 years old.

Workers installing a manhole and backflow valve as part of utility works found a large rear horse shoe and a grey hand-thrown stoneware ginger beer bottle about three metres underground. The bottle, stamped with the name ‘Fowler’, is thought to be made in the 1840s by Irish immigrant and well-known potter Enoch Fowler, who arrived in Auckland in 1836.

The artefacts were located within the area of the first major reclamation to be undertaken in Auckland.

New walkway for Lower Queen Street The busy construction area of Lower Queen Street has a new walkway linking Customs and Quay Streets.

The walkway, a joint effort between CRL, Precinct Properties and Activate Auckland, is intended to provide a safe, well-lit and attractive route that separates pedestrians from CRL construction on the eastern side and the Commercial Bay property development on the western side. Vehicles have their own lane through Lower Queen Street to access Tyler and Galways Streets, either side of Britomart Station.

The walkway features a distinctive wave pattern that lights up at night, reflecting its harbourside location.

Lower Queen Street is the gateway to Auckland’s CBD for visitors and many commuters. It is also home to residents and businesses. Several thousand people work in the commercial offices which front onto Lower Queen Street and the area has high foot traffic, with up to 25,000 people moving through the space at rush hour.

Newly installed wayfinding signage aims to help people navigate the downtown area and find the places and services they need.

The walkway is expected to stay in its current location until August, when it will move further west and vehicles switch to the east to better manage truck movements for changing construction needs.

Behind the scenes progress at Britomart While Britomart Station continues to function as normal, it’s easy to forget there’s a lot of work going mostly unnoticed in the former Chief Post Office (CPO) entrance building.

The floor is being removed, piling works have started, the glass bridge that used to run between the CPO and Commerce St is being removed, and diaphragm walls are being prepared ahead of tunnel excavation.

In addition, a huge utilities trench has been dug in Galway Street, revealing something of our city’s past, as detailed on pages 4 and 5.

With Lower Queen St now closed to pedestrians, more substantial construction equipment will be installed and piling in the area will begin in October.
