What’s in a Station?
There’s more than meets the eye!
Each City Rail Link (CRL) station is a hub of technology, with systems like transformers, fire suppression, and ventilation working seamlessly to ensure you reach your destination safely and efficiently.
Let’s take a look.
PUBLIC AREAS
Here you can tag on and off, access the platform, travel up to the platform, travel up or down the escalators and lifts, or use the bathroom.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION STAIRS
SUMP PIT
The sump pit is there in case of emergencies – it can collect water to prevent flooding.
FANS
Most of the area inside the station is taken up by the tunnel ventilation system. Huge fans inside the station help to push air through ventilation shafts. This system can control temperature and helps in an emergency by clearing smoke.
CHILLER ROOM
This room contains chillers which help control the temperature of the ventilation system.
STORE ROOMS
All the equipment in the station needs occasional maintenance or replacement – that’s why we have a maintenance room and storerooms for extra equipment.
CONTROL ROOMS
Many of the CRL’s moving parts have a control room. These are like the brains behind things like the tunnel ventilation motors, HVAC system, fans and chillers.
FIRE & LIFE SAFETY ROOMS
Several rooms ensure we’re best prepared for emergencies – they contain fire hydrants, large water pumps or gas suppression systems.
BUILDING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (BMS) ROOM
The BMS controls all the systems that run within the station – this includes things like the HVAC, lifts, lighting, and escalators.
VENTILATION DUCTS
Smaller ventilation ducts run throughout the building and help control temperature.
UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY (UPS) ROOMS
UPS are like big back up batteries to ensure the CRL is prepared for any potential power outages.
HIGH & LOW VOLTAGE ROOMS
Permanent 22 kilovolt power is supplied to all the CRL stations and tunnels through 7 kilometres of cable. High voltage (HV) cables connect each station to the next. Once HV reaches the stations, transformers step it down into safer low voltage power that can be used for everyday station and tunnel operations.
COMMUNICATIONS RISERS
These are spaces that connect each floor to the next with communication cables.
