The Porters Avenue level crossing will permanently close on 12 August 2022 On August 12 at 7am, Link Alliance will permanently close the rail level crossing between Porters Avenue and Wynyard Road. The level crossing closure enables the next stage of construction to occur for excavation of the rail trenches for four new rail tracks at this location, including the new CRL rail lines that the new tunnels. Once the level crossing closes, people will be able to cross the rail lines via the stairs on the new Porters Avenue bridge, or by the signposted accessibility route along Dominion Road and Brentwood Avenue. The Porters Avenue Footbridge will replace the level crossing which is due to be completed and fully opened in November 2022.

Prioritising public safety We recognise that the closure will be inconvenient for people but it is the only way to ensure pedestrian and worker safety during and after construction. Once the new tracks are completed, four rail lines will pass Porters Avenue with two dedicated CRL tracks lowering into a trench that will lead to the new tunnels. This complex layout means that it is not possible to maintain a safe rail level crossing between Porters Avenue and Wynyard Road. The closure of this level crossing signifies the last of the rail level crossings to be removed for Maungawhau Station (Mt Eden) construction area. Level crossings create an unnecessary safety hazard, where vehicles and pedestrians have the potential to come into contact. Alternative design options to get across the rail corridor were considered during the planning phase of the project and was put out for community
consultation by AT in late 2017. The footbridge was confirmed as the safest, most practicable option. You can read more about the outcomes of Auckland Transport feedback process here: at.govt.nz/projects-roadworks/portersavenuelevel-crossing/ The accessible detour route will be via Brentwood Avenue and Dominion Road. If you require support with other accessible options, or for more information about the accessible route, please contact us via our email mteden@linkalliance.co.nz to discuss with a member of our friendly community team.
