Abbott likes the Valley “The Rio Grande Valley plays such an important role for the future of this great state”. -Greg Abbott The Rio Grande Valley region is known as an area where residents vote in favor of Democrats, in over 100 years no Republican has been elected to any elected office. But during the last state election Greg Abbott wanted to change that and at the end he could not. This leader, who until recently was the attorney general of Texas, received in this region a big support for his candidacy, more than many expected. Achieving the endorsements of important leaders in the region as the Mayor of Mission Norberto “Beto” Salinas and other mayors like Chris Boswell from the City of Harlingen and Jim Darling of City of McAllen. Greg Abbott’s wife is from Hispanic origin and that is something he used to his advantage. The republican candidate visited the

Rio Grande Valley region in more than 15 times during his campaign. And although this area votes always in favor of Democrats, at state level the vote of the majority of Republicans where in favor of Abbott who had no problems making it to the governor’s mansion and allow with his triumph that the state government continue to be held by the Republican party. The state of Texas has been ‘red’ since Democrat Ann Richards left the governorship in 1995. And even though they had largely secured their victory since the beginning of the campaign, Republicans never trusted, that’s why they made a big approach to Latino voters, who most of them are in this region of the state. As a basic point of the importance of this area, we can mention that the first debate

was held in the Rio Grande Valley. Nevertheless Greg Abbott obtained a good vote in the region, it was not the winner in the region. But during his campaign the new governor of Texas made big promises to the residents of this region, one of theme was to be a closer state leader that will help increase state funds for more infrastructure to this border community that is booming in economic development and job creation. And his is fulfilling its promise, two days after his sworn in he made his first trip our of Austin to this region, in his visit he said: “My first trip after the election was to the Rio Grande Valley, and now my first trip after my Inauguration is to the Rio Grande Valley. There’s a reason for that; the Rio Grande Valley plays such an important role for the future of this great state”.
