A LOOK BACK AT 2017 It’s hard to believe we are reaching a close to 2017 and beginning a new year. This past year brought many exciting opportunities and projects, and 2018 promises to be no different. The City continued to make many strides regarding Dublin City Council’s strategic focus areas: Fiscal health: This past year, the City of Dublin once again earned the highest possible bond ratings from the nation’s top credit rating organizations. In addition to top scores from Moody’s and Fitch, the City requested a rating from S&P and was assigned their highest, an AAA rating. On top of that, an independent auditor has issued a clean opinion of the City’s financial statements. Economic vitality: Plain and simple—people want to do business in Dublin. We have low vacancy rates at less than 9%, and we continue to focus on the retention and expansion of our existing businesses while also attracting new businesses. Several new businesses have opened as the Bridge Street District is emerging along both sides of the Scioto River, complimenting the charm of our existing Historic District. Tied into the Bridge Street District development are the improvements along North High Street. The work there has included the replacement of a waterline that serves half of Dublin’s population, the relocation of overhead utilities underground, the addition of parking to accommodate new development and the construction of new sidewalks and a dedicated bicycle lane. This past year, we also witnessed construction begin on the 33 Smart Corridor to bring the region one step closer to self-driving vehicles. Smart customer-focused government: 2017 saw us complete expansion and renovation on both our Justice Center and Service Center, enabling us to more efficiently serve our residents. Our City departments took home dozens of state and national awards in recognition of their high quality and
innovation. Examples include our Fleet being named among the top fleets in all of North America, Dublin Police Officer Chuck Collier being honored Ohio School Resource Officer of the Year, and Dublin being selected as the #4 suburb in the U.S. by real estate website Niche.com. Community engagement: 2017 was a very successful year for us in connecting with our residents. City Council and City staff have worked tirelessly to hold open meetings and attend events to listen to and celebrate with our residents and businesses. We expanded the number of face-to-face community engagement events we offer, such as the Community Conversation with Dublin’s Indian Community, Coffee and Conversation with the City Manager and our Talks in the Park. We also saw substantial growth in our City social media accounts, allowing us to better connect with you and respond to your questions and concerns. Safe and resilient: Our police continue to take a proactive approach to keep our community one of the safest in the nation. We’ve done this by implementing active shooter training for the public and “Take-back Tuesdays” to help fight prescription pill abuse. We also used Public Service Announcement videos, social media and e-News to keep our residents aware of the latest crime trends. While we’ll take some time to enjoy the accomplishments of 2017, I assure you that we won’t become complacent. We know 2018 will bring a new set of challenges and, in turn, new possibilities for success. I’m looking forward to what we’ll do together in the coming year! Sincerely,

ublin Jerome High School graduate Ian Burkhart is, in a lot of ways, like most other 26-year-olds.

He enjoys traveling, spending time with his friends and family, and exploring Columbus, where he lives. One thing that sets Burkhart apart from most others his age, however, is a biggie: He is affected by quadriplegia. Many in Dublin know Burkhart’s story. When he was 19, following his freshman year at Ohio University, Burkhart and his friends headed down to the Outer Banks. After a long drive, Burkhart and his friends ran to the beach to test the water. After he dove in, a tide caught Burkhart, sending him neck-first into a sandbar. He was paralyzed immediately. This began four months of surgery, rehabilitation and a month in a nursing home in Dublin. In a moment, his life had changed completely, but he says as soon as he returned home, the community was there.

“That’s one of the big things that I shouldn’t be surprised about, but I was: how much the community rallied around me,” Burkhart says. “It was just amazing, the support from everybody – people that I knew, people that I didn’t know. It’s definitely a good place to be.” Anyone who knows him knows that Burkhart isn’t one to back down from a challenge. Jerome, from which Burkhart had graduated just a year earlier, held fundraisers and presented Burkhart’s parents, Terre and Doug, with a check at a football game in Burkhart’s honor. The money helped with increasing medical bills and modifications to Doug’s house, which included an elevator, ramps and renovated bathroom to allow Burkhart access. Now, years after the 2010 accident, Burkhart’s life is back to normal – a new normal. He drives, lives on his own, is

enrolled at The Ohio State University, coaches Jerome’s lacrosse team and is a key subject in a clinical trial by Battelle and OSU. The trial, Reanimation in Tetraplegia, made Burkhart the first person with quadriplegia ever to move his hand with his mind, and Burkhart, Battelle and OSU are still making key findings in the trial today. The accident has brought his family closer together, and he attributes his success to his parents and his siblings, Goldie, Taylor and Marshall. Though Burkhart’s determination never wavered, his independence and finding the new normal didn’t happen overnight. “I’ve been able to adapt to a new sense of what my life should be like, and kind of been able to go with it and get back to a normal-ish pattern in my life,” he says. “Because of the help I was able to get from the community, it set me on that right path.” This past spring, Burkhart founded the Ian Burkhart Foundation in order to help others with spinal cord injuries. He knows that others may not have the strong support system he did in Dublin, so he hopes to give back through his foundation. “I had the best opportunity for success after my injury. Now I want to be able to give other people that same opportunity,” Burkhart says. “To help re-establish their life … to get back to where you were, where you want to be.” The family and community support helped Burkhart do things that ablebodied people take for granted. has limited use of his wrists, elbows and shoulders, which allows him to operate his van and wheelchair and do almost everything independently. But for those in wheelchairs, even visiting friends can be difficult when most homes are only accessible via stairs. These are things that he hopes to focus on through the foundation. “I got a portable ramp to go to some of my friends’ houses, because that is something that really does help stimulate that community feeling, versus everyone always coming to your place,” Burkhart says. “Living with a spinal cord injury is like a chess match. Though he is often traveling, delivering presentations on the brain and future of medical technology around the U.S., Burkhart still finds time to enjoy Columbus and study for class. He hopes to make strides with the foundation, Reanimation in Tetraplegia and, after he graduates, he hopes to get into public accounting. The Jerome varsity lacrosse players should be glad to know, too, that he has no intentions of leaving his coaching position, which he still loves. Though his injury at first seemed to be an obstacle, it’s become just another part of Burkhart’s life, and he sees it as yet another opportunity. “My outlook has definitely changed, as far as really not taking anything for granted, being thankful for what you have. It’s all those cliché things that make a lot more sense now,” Burkhart says. “Some of my passion has changed – like with starting the foundation, something I’m super, super passionate about. BRICK by BRICK Dublin resident and his compatriots take LEGO building to a whole new level By Emily Real
L
EGO may be marketed primarily to a younger audience, but it’s definitely not just for kids anymore.
In fact, there’s a network of groups for adult LEGO builders that spans across the globe. One of those groups is located right here in central Ohio, and one of its most active members is a Dublin resident. Eric Cacioppo is a husband, a father of three – son Sam and daughters Ellie and Annabella – and an art teacher at Robert Frost Elementary School in Westerville. He’s also the ambassador and former president of Ohio LEGO Users Group, better known as OhioLUG. Cacioppo was initially drawn to OhioLUG about six years ago when Sam, then 3, started to play with LEGO. “He started playing with (LEGO) a little bit, and I just got that bug again, and started looking and seeing what people were doing. Being an art teacher and doing art in my own time, it kind of sucked me in,” Cacioppo says. “Then I found the group and it sort of snowballed from there.” When Cacioppo joined the group, OhioLUG wasn’t OhioLUG yet. Back then, it

was called Central Ohio Train Club, and mainly focused on building LEGO trains. “When I stepped in (as president) probably four or five years ago now, I kind of pushed the group to become a nonprofit,” Cacioppo says. “So, we did that, and we changed our name to Ohio LEGO Users Group instead so it was more general – so when people came in, they didn’t think they needed to build trains.” Cacioppo recently stepped down as president due to the time constraints of his role there, his day job and his children. But in his role as ambassador to LEGO, he communicates directly with LEGO about exhibits, supply of bricks and other forms of support for OhioLUG. As a club, OhioLUG meets around once a month, to build off one another and the work of other adult LEGO users for inspiration, both within the state of Ohio and across the nation and globe. Members must be at least 18 to join. Cacioppo says there’s actually a term that adult LEGO users use to refer to the period of time between childhood and adulthood, when folks might feel that they’re too cool to still play with LEGO. “They call it the dark ages,” Cacioppo says.
“(They’re) kind of known as the ages where you’re a kid and you play with LEGO, then you get too old and you don’t play with them anymore, then you come back to it when you’re an adult.” People around Ohio can come see the work produced by Cacioppo and other members of OhioLUG in exhibits throughout central Ohio, including exhibits at Polaris Fashion Place, the Ohio State Fair, the BIA Parade of Homes and, perhaps most noticeably, at the Columbus Museum of Art’s annual LEGO exhibit, Think Outside the Brick: The Creative Art of LEGO, which opened in November. At these events, attendees can expect massive LEGO Rube.Goldbergesque ball machines,

Going Viral Scioto senior investigates Ebola virus By Mikayla Klein
But for Anusha Srivastava, it’s too good of an opportunity to pass up. This past summer, the Dublin Scioto High School senior participated in the Mechanisms of Human Health and Disease program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. As one of 30 students selected for the program, Srivastava chose to conduct an independent research project on Ebola, interviewing experts on the virus and researching its molecular mechanisms. “Each student worked on a project individually, and we gave a presentation on the last day of the program in front of our classmates, parents, TAs and lecturers,” says Srivastava. During the summer-long program, Srivastava also attended lectures on topics such as cancer, pathophysiology and pathotechnology, taught by teachers and researchers at Nationwide Children’s. “It really opened up a lot of different avenues for me,” says Srivastava. “I’m realizing how diverse the medical field is, learning about different areas I can specialize in and where my skill sets are.” Since the conclusion of the program, Srivastava has grown more interested in pursuing medical research. “I know that it’s something I would like to do alongside being a physician of some sort,” says Srivastava. Throughout her junior year at Scioto, Srivastava was already moving toward the 30 • December 2017/January 2018
medical field. As a student in the Dublin City Schools Biomedical Research Academy, a yearlong program designed for future biomedical professionals, Srivastava’s coursework included AP biology, body systems, medical interventions, 3-D art and a capstone research project. At school, Srivastava serves as vice president of Student Senate, heading up its Recognition Committee, which recognizes and shows appreciation for different groups of people in the school. The club’s biggest fundraiser is DublinThon, a student-led dance marathon that raises money to fight cancer. “It’s such a humbling experience,” she says. “This club has definitely had a huge impact on me, and I’m so glad to be a part of it.” Srivastava also plays the flute in the Youth Philharmonic of Central Ohio, and is a member of National Honor Society and a National Merit Semifinalist. She has also volunteered at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital the last three years. When she’s not busy with school or volunteering, she loves reading; watching her favorite show, The Office; and dancing. “I’ve been dancing since I was 9. I started with classical Indian dance and now I do Bollywood dance, and that’s a really big part of my life,” says Srivastava. “I love it and it’s such a great way for me to relax.” After graduation, Srivastava hopes to attend Vanderbilt University and major in either biological sciences or cellular and molecular biology. She would love to continue dancing, get involved with the Vanderbilt University Dance Marathon and join an Indian student group there.
Looking ahead, Srivastava intends to apply to medical school. After her schooling, residencies and fellowships, she hopes to work with Doctors Without Borders. She cites her parents, Dinesh and Shikha, as the most influential people in her life. “When they came here, they left our entire extended family behind in India. The amount of ambition and drive they both have to get to the place where they’ve gotten and to give me the life I have now is incredible,” says Srivastava. “They have made so many sacrifices for me to get a good education and go to a good school, and I would love to repay them any way I possibly can.” Mikayla Klein is a contributing writer. Prepared for Anything Karen Harriman looks forward to retirement after years of teaching Dublin Life’s Storyteller Series focuses on the people who make Dublin great – people who have made improving the community a part of their life, people who have been able to call Dublin home for a long time and people who have watched Dublin evolve over the years. The Storyteller Series tells the history of Dublin through his or her eyes, and sheds light on what living in Dublin was like decades ago. With the help of these special people, Dublin has undoubtedly become a better place.
A
fter 18 years spent getting the younger generation ready for college – how to dress for an interview, what to put on a resume, how to land an internship – Karen Harriman, a longtime teacher in the Dublin City School District, is finally able to live in the moment.
Harriman was born in Lima, Ohio on Oct. 13, 1952. At a time when women were shoehorned into two career paths, nursing or teaching, Harriman decided to get a degree to teach home economics from Bowling Green State University. She taught for a few years before moving to Phoenix, Arizona with a man she met at BGSU and would later marry, Doug. The couple had two children, Tyler and Megan, and Harriman took time off to be a full-time mom. When the kids got to be school-aged, Harriman was offered a job teaching morning kindergarten at their school. Summers and holidays during the family’s 18 years in Arizona were spent flying back and forth between Phoenix and Dublin, where Harriman’s sisters lived. Eventually, the couple decided it was time for a change of scenery. “Family has always been very, very important to me. I told my husband, ‘I think the kids need to know their relatives,’” says Harriman. “I figured, (Dublin) is a nice, small town, it’s close to Columbus with a lot of activities. Reflecting back on that, it’s the best decision we ever made.” Like anyone about to make a major life decision, Harriman and Doug got cold feet when they realized their Phoenix home was sold and they’d quit their jobs. “All of a sudden you go, ‘Wait a minute,’” she says. “I got a job with Columbus Public Schools, (Doug) got a job and our house closed all in the same day. So I said, ‘This was meant to be.’” Soon after they relocated in 1994, Harriman and her daughter walked into an open house on a whim and found their new home. Buying the house in Historic Dublin couldn’t have been a better move for Harriman, who is now thrilled to see all of the new growth only a few steps away. 34 • December 2017/January 2018
“That was a great decision,” she says. “The hotbed of activity is here. You have Historic Dublin, the quaint little shops, then across the river with Bridge Park.” After her time in Columbus schools, Harriman worked at Gahanna Lincoln High School. But her true calling would come when she was offered a job in Dublin City Schools as a teacher in the Young Professionals’ Academy (YPA), a program dedicated to helping Dublin’s high school students find, explore and prepare for their careers. The program takes students from all three high schools, and for the last 18 years, Harriman has been an integral part of it. “It’s for the students to go in and start building their networks, … test drive a career before they go off to college,” she says. “They can find out, ‘What is the work environment like? Am I working by myself? Am I working with people? Do I like this? Is it rewarding? Does it match up with my values and interests?’” Harriman says the program has helped many students discover their passions. Just as important, though, it’s helped students discover what they don’t want to do. Harriman recalls a student from years ago who said she’d always wanted to be a teacher. When she was dropped into the classroom, however, reality set in. “She came back two weeks later and goes, ‘Every time I turn around, there are kids around all the time. It’s driving me nuts,’” says Harriman, laughing. www.dublinlifemagazine.com
YPA’s success has led to the creation of other career-focused programs in Dublin City Schools. The Dublin Teachers Academy, Engineering Academy, Biomedical Academy, Business Academy and IT Academy all offer students hyper-focused experience, preparing them for what’s to come after high school graduation. After 18 years with YPA and Dublin schools, Harriman decided it was time to retire and focus on her hobbies, children and grandchildren. On Oct. 13, Harriman celebrated two landmarks: her final day at work and her 65th birthday. Then, in November, she jetted off to Hawaii with her husband and their longtime friends. Though she admits she’s nervous of how she’ll feel about retirement after life calms down following the holiday season, Harriman says she’s thrilled to spend more time with her children and grandchildren. “I have great kids, I have great grandchildren. I’m so blessed with that,” she says. “I’m excited to be retired and to be able to spend those special moments with my kids, my grandkids, my siblings, my mom and my husband.” And while Harriman will miss – and be missed in – the classroom, she says she’s in Dublin “for the long haul.” That means her former students will be close by, or – she says, as she scrolls through her phone’s contact list, revealing countless names tagged with “YPA 2017,” “YPA 2016” and so on – they’re just a text or call away. “Why move any place else? What does any place else have to offer that Dublin doesn’t?” she says. “With YPA, I feel like I don’t just have my two kids and my five grandchildren; I have thousands of kids. … Dublin is family.”

Home for the Holidays Updated – and holiday decoration-adorned – home is all set for annual home tour
W
hen Autumn Pochiro and her husband, Pat, first purchased her Tartan Fields home, she made the promise that, she says, all wives make. “I told him, ‘Yes, honey, (the house) is perfect. There’s nothing I would change about it. This is us,’” Pochiro says. “The statement was partially true.” Pochiro moved to Dublin three years ago from Grafton, Massachusetts. She was fond of the great neighborhood, now having two daughters, as well as the walking trails, local golf course and club with amenities like pools and tennis courts. However, the kitchen in her home with the Thermofoil cabinets and dark granite? That needed to go. Immediately. “Creating a kitchen that is functional as well as stylish is always the number one goal,” says Pochiro. “Color makes people happy.” The official renovation started in 2015 after months spent designing the new look. Initially, Pochiro took out the soffit above the fridge to give herself additional cabinet space. She also installed an L-shaped banquette with storage and added additional seating with a 6-foot maple raw-edge dining table, perfect for her little family of four. The completion of the kitchen sparked a new creative flame – one that quickly invaded other areas of the first floor. 36 • December 2017/January 2018
Pochiro is not only overjoyed with the new kitchen design, but with the new appliances that make cooking for her family easier. “Double ovens are a must, along with a gas range (for the stove) and stainless steel farmhouse sink,” she says. Bold colors and patterns were a continuing theme in the redesign. Pochiro says laundry rooms are often overlooked for additional storage space due to their size. She recommends using it as a mudroom, too, especially if one has kids.

Focal points of the dining room are the two modern chandeliers hanging in the center of the ceiling above the table. They provide a substantial amount of light during the later hours of the evening, a must when painting a room such a rich color. As for the ceiling itself, Pochiro already had a plan in mind.
Gone are the cozy, dark-brown walls. Pochiro repainted them with a cool-toned grey color to give the space a fresher look. In addition, she created an architectural feature on the fireplace with wainscoting. The fireplace mantel was lowered to accommodate the TV and new marble tile that mimics the flames of a fire.
“The ceiling is the fifth wall of any room and always deserves a statement,” she says. “I love the intoxicating power of decorating with layers of pattern, texture and color.”

“I had to begin erasing time from our family room,” says Pochiro. “Any great designer will tell you that a beautiful design has a glorious future of timelessness. We needed a rejuvenation of palette.” Pochiro hoped this new design would open up the space and allow for a great backdrop for her Christmas tree – one of five, that is. “I love Christmas. Sugar cookies, making pottery with my daughters, ornaments, ribbon galore … and the family time at home making memories to last,” she says. Pochiro worked with Steve Martanovic and Jovani Painting for the living, dining and laundry rooms, and POM Remodeling for the kitchen. Pochiro’s home is part of the Junior League of Columbus’ annual Holiday Tour of Homes fundraiser, slated for Dec. 2. This year’s tour showcases recently renovated or redesigned homes decorated for the holiday season in Tartan Fields, and proceeds benefit the league’s charitable mission, which is focused on family self-sustainability. Pochiro, an interior designer at Autumn Dawn Inspired Design, will feature her own home in the tour, which is one of her favorite holiday traditions. “Home should be inspired by who you are. What Do You Know? What we can learn from Dublin Moms in the Know
W
hether you are bringing a newborn home from the hospital, helping your child choose a high school or college, or looking for activities to occupy your grandchildren, it helps to talk to other moms with experience and wisdom. The Facebook page Dublin Moms in the Know is like one-stop-shopping, with more than 4,200 members who can read your questions and offer suggestions. Dublin resident Lea Dellavaris started the page as a place where her friends could share referrals and information. Deb Papesh calls it the “Mama Tribe,” a social media conduit for generations to “meet” under one roof. I reach out to DMITK regularly for help on my columns and suggestions on everyone from painters to tutors to doctors. My favorite posts are the ones that see people get connected and our supportive community come together to share, comfort, celebrate and help one another.

Forming New Groups and Making Friends Renee Jordan and 125 other DMITK ladies expressed interest in starting a book club in December 2014. Longtime residents and women new to Dublin formed into four groups with three different genres: mystery, chick lit and bestsellers. Renee’s group calls itself “Wine, Women and Work,” and still meets monthly at various members’ homes. “We’ve grown very close,” says Renee. “When one of our gals was diagnosed with breast cancer, we joined together to make her a fleece blanket and pray for her well-being.” Kristin Reynolds also says she met her best friend, Holly Ann, through DMITK, and her life has been forever changed. “Holly even gave up her spare bedroom to my family when we sold our house quickly and needed a place to stay until we closed on the new one,” says Kristin. Starting New Businesses Bidisha Nag had no intentions of forming a company when she asked DMITK if anyone was interested in learning how to cook Indian food. She moved to Dublin last year from New Jersey and was taking some time to settle in before going back to work fulltime. So many people responded to her post that she started “Create Your Curry,” and now teaches out of her house as well as the Dublin Community Recreation Center and 1400 Food Lab. As a former university professor with a Ph.D. in human cultural geography, Bidisha says her

That’s when they decided to start an education blog called Grade A Teaching, which provides resources for other teachers. “The blog is growing quickly into a business,” says Erin, “and it all started with DMITK.” Finding Services, Referrals and Recommendations When my daughter was suffering from migraines, I used the search feature on the DMITK page to read about other people’s experiences and doctor referrals. One of the rules for the site is to not give legal or medical advice, but it was still helpful to hear about remedies and treatments that worked for others. Stephanie Herron says she found an amazing piano teacher on DMITK who is now a dear friend. Terri Ritchie has located services to repair broken window seals and her chimney. Alinda Olsen found a tutor who lives right down the street and has been an absolute blessing. Bidisha bought her house before it even went on the market from a woman who posted that she was selling. Members are asked to limit promoting their businesses to once per month, but they can always solicit recommendations or give reviews on services and companies. Making a Difference I love reading posts in which Dubliners ask for and receive help from strangers, such as searching for and finding lost dogs. of the employees could find it. Jen went on DMITK and asked for anyone who was going to the store to keep their eyes open. A woman and her son who had never met Jennifer went out of their way to Walmart, searched the entire store and found the blankie. Kath Jackson volunteers at the Holy Family Soup Kitchen in Columbus, and posted once about needing containers for extra food for the homeless so they didn’t have to pour soup into grocery bags. Now Dubliners regularly deliver items to Kath’s house: small and large containers, boxes, ice packs, plus other items needed such as socks, coats, sleeping bags and batteries. “The people cheer when I walk in the door at the soup kitchen,” says Kath. “It’s so simple, but has made a huge impact.”

Learning from Others Sometimes the DMITK posts are a chance to learn something new or be reminded about the simple things. Janice Joos says she discovered an obvious but very helpful hint. She was complaining about the cap from her laundry detergent always being sticky, and someone suggested that she throw the cap into the wash with her clothes. Problem solved. Lee Ann Codispoti saw a post from a young mom who was irritated because her mother was constantly buying little things for the grandchildren instead of spending quality time with them. This resonated with Lee Ann and now, instead of constantly giving gifts, she takes her grandkids on lunch dates, for manicures and for ice cream at the park. They all enjoy their special “Nonna Time,” and Lee Ann credits a young mother from DMITK.
