Youth Activities Deliver Lifelong Benefits

T

he Grove City community has always supported and encouraged its youth through learning and service organizations such as scouts, 4-H and school-sponsored civic clubs. Complementing those groups are an abundance of music and athletic programs including band, Little League® Baseball, soccer and dance. Participating in organized activities at a young age provides important benefits for healthy social, psychological and physical development. We also know involvement does more than improve the child’s health — it promotes the formation and strengthening of relationships, instills the value of improvement over perfection, and allows youth to experience the significance of being on a team while working with peers and supervisors. Entering the 1960s, civic clubs were well-established in Grove City, while youth sports were predominantly organized through independent efforts and school-sponsored or parks department programs. In 1963, a small group of volunteer coaches successfully fielded an independent youth football team, the Black Knights, increasing an interest in supplementary organized sports. Recognizing the community would benefit from an organization that provided additional youth sports programs, the Black Knights football coaches partnered with other volunteers to establish the non-profit Grove City Kids Association (GCKA). The new organization introduced its first program in February 1967: basketball. With football and basketball programs firmly established, GCKA participation quickly grew and it wasn’t long before softball, cheerleading and soccer were added. The most remarkable part of this story is

The GUIDE 6 July/August 2019

the association was started and continues to be operated by volunteers. Now entering its 52nd year and providing sports activities for more than 2,000 youth, the non-profit program remains entirely funded through corporate sponsorships, donations and minimal participation fees. Although GCKA is the longest-running youth sports association in Grove City, several other programs have developed over the years, adding to the opportunities children in our community have to get involved in activities fostering good health and building valuable social connections. Our Parks and Recreation Department offers a multitude of team sports and programs for youth (check out The Source section of this magazine), including opportunities to volunteer within the community. Numerous Grove City churches also host successful youth ministries and clubs. Our community is fortunate to have so many sports and civic organizations available to our youth, helping cut barriers that typically divide a society. From these groups, our leaders emerge — those who are willing to make sacrifices for the team, their families and ultimately their community. Mayor Richard L. “Ike” Stage

Twin Towers Swim Club Cooled Grove City for 42 Years An interest was expressed in having a community swimming pool around 1930 during discussions regarding potential future development and again in 1951 during the mayoral election campaign. Yet, it wasn’t until January 1957 that formal action occurred to secure funding for land and construction of an outdoor swimming pool. On Jan. 21, 1957, a newly formed non-profit organization purchased 1.342 acres of land just west of the community park (now called Windsor Park) for $500. Three days later, the group held its first official meeting to elect officers, established fundraising and draft the first code of regulations. Named for the two water towers that shaded the property, Twin Tow-

ers Swim Club tackled an ambitious fundraising campaign, selling $100 investment bonds to interested residents. In just over one month’s time, the efforts accumulated more than $60,000 in subscribed bonds, nearly three-quarters of the $85,000 needed to complete the project. On a rainy spring day in midMarch, ground was broken and construction began with an aggressive goal of welcoming swimmers by July of that year. Community youth and adults watched with anticipation as concrete trucks streamed in and filled the forms to create the long-awaited refreshing destination. Four months later, Grove City opened its first outdoor community pool and – as promised – swimmers were splashing in cool waters. The

club featured an L-shaped pool, with depths from two to five feet on the long end and a 10-foot deep diving area on the short end; and a separate six-inch to two-foot depth wading pool, both with the best filtration and chlorination systems of the time. A bathhouse and concession stand were also constructed. In later years, an additional lap pool was added on the south end of the property for swimmers age 18 and over. Thousands of families enjoyed the complex for more than 40 years before repairs became too costly and the only feasible option was to close in 1999. That same year, the Big Splash opened its gates to eager swimmers. Highlighted in the Feature section of this issue, the award-winning family waterpark is celebrating its 20th season of refreshing cooldowns and fun summer activities.

Explore a new activity and paddle a canoe down the Scioto River, relish in an over-night backpacking adventure or fish in the river or pond at Scioto Grove Metro Park. If you are a bit more adventurous, take up archery at the range, enjoy the disc golf course or visit the designated drone area to get a bird’s-eye view of the park. Development Parks and Recreation Fuels Economic Development

N

ot only are our parks attractive amenities for our residents, Grove City’s 364 acres of parkland and the 620-acre Scioto Grove Metro Park serve as a terrific draw for tourists and businesses, contributing significantly to the economic development of our community. Our parks and historic neighborhoods are home to many well-attended festivals and sporting events, bringing visitors from around the region to stay in our hotels and patronize our restaurants and shops. The majority of activities and events are provided by non-profit organizations and government agencies – the City of Grove City, Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce and the Heart of Grove City. Local businesses are offered options to support the communities such as sponsoring youth sports teams, participating in farmers’ markets and donating funds for facility costs such as those incurred by the Grove City Buddy Ball League. Parks and related recreational activities are economic development engines, creating a dynamic cycle of progress for the community. Locations with a high quality of life attract businesses; resulting in new jobs filled by talented associates; generating additional income tax revenue and enabling further investment in City parks and recreation amenities. Many business owners are first introduced to a community when visiting. A positive recreational experience can influence decisions and ultimately impact talent recruitment, as recent studies indicate that many people now relocate to a desirable city, then seek employment in that area after. Grove City, twice-named Best Hometown by Ohio Magazine, has proven itself as a community offering a high quality of life through its exceptional amenities and public services. Mount Carmel’s Grove City Hospital and medical campus, OhioHealth’s Grove City Methodist Hospital, and Beulah Park Living are all examples of large-scale developments located in our community. A thousand acres of parkland and open space, 26 miles of dedicated multi-use trails and a host of programs and events are all assets to our community, reaching far beyond the traditional scope of recreational opportunities. Each makes a lasting impact on the community’s development appeal.

F

or many Grove City residents, the name Alex Rogers probably rings a bell. But his face is even more recognizable. Easily classified as the selfie king or the face of Grove City, Rogers is the co-creator of the digital marketing company Alex Is Social. His reach goes beyond the company though, as he is constantly dedicating personal time and effort to develop Columbus, especially his hometown, Grove City. “Grove City is amazing,” Rogers says. “It’s still hometown-small-feeling, but it’s growing so rapidly. It’s honestly the place to be.” Every success story comes with hurdles. After a series of hardships, Rogers decided to quit the corporate world, join business forces with his longtime friend, Alex Stewart, and rebrand their business as Alex Is Social. Together, they mostly work with local businesses to create organic content – adventure videos for Visit Grove City and vlogs for Grove City Brewing Company – for their social media platforms. “(Alex Is Social), it’s helping build the Grove City name and bringing more value to the city,” Rogers says. “People don’t always think that way, they’re looking for that direct lead, but if you help somebody it can bring more components to the city.” Alex Is Social is just one detail in www.DiscoverGroveCity.com

Rogers’ life. When Rogers attended Grove City High School, few classes focused on entrepreneurship. Things have changed, and now a new course allows senior students to create a mock or real company from scratch. When Rogers became aware of this course, he immediately jumped on the opportunity to mentor. “Some students have great ideas

Speaking with Gary Vaynerchuk One of Rogers’ biggest career accomplishments is right around the corner. On July 16-17, the worldrenowned entrepreneur and business speaker Gary Vaynerchuk is coming to Columbus for the SkySpout Summit, a digital marketing conference. Since the event organizers wanted to include local entrepreneurs and business leaders, Rogers was chosen to sit on a panel and speak right before Vaynerchuk. He will talk about Facebook tools and Alex Is Social. And even though Rogers has vowed to never work in the corporate world again, he does note – with a smirk – that working for Vaynerchuk is the exception. and they really want to be entrepreneurs,” Rogers says. “For them to ask questions and really look up to me, it’s a good feeling. I’m all about teaching youth because they will be in charge when I’m older.” Rogers isn’t just inspiring students though, he’s also inspiring Columbus through a new Facebook program. After Facebook received some heated press, the company altered its mission and launched an international program in 103 cities called Community Leadership Circles. Columbus was chosen, but

a leader was needed to help local businesses utilize Facebook tools. Then Facebook came across Rogers and the rest was history. Rogers is now the team lead for the Columbus area CLC and works mostly with non-profit organizations to provide social media assistance. Being selected as the team lead came with perks; in December 2018, Rogers attended the CLC summit in Berlin where he met international community leaders and was struck with inspiration. “It was pretty freaking incredible,” Rogers says. “Everybody brought

a unique story, and the groups these community leaders lead on the side, so powerful.” When Rogers isn’t attending community events or working with local clients to ultimately help Grove City grow, he’s enjoying time with his family. During one adventure, Rogers and his children ventured across Grove City to find every playground and counted 46 in total. Fun outings and quality time with his kids are important to Rogers, as he firmly believes work and family go hand in hand. “My children are what I live, breathe and die for,” Rogers says. “I want to make my mark in Grove City – something for my kids to be proud of when they’re older.” Rogers also lives and breathes Grove City – evident even as a teenager when he changed high schools so he could attend GCHS like all his other family members. And his selfies aren’t just for fun, they’re a method of showcasing the exciting people, events and businesses in and beyond Grove City. So, if you ever meet Rogers, get ready to say cheese – after all, he is the selfie king. Lydia Freudenberg is the brand loyalty specialist. Recycle Right Grove City provides each resident with recycling bins to place at the curb on the designated recycling day. You can also rent an additional rolling recycling bin. Make sure you know how to properly recycle, as there are many items that are accidentally misplaced in recycling bins. You can recycle materials like paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and jugs, glass bottles and jars, metal cans, and cartons. What won’t be accepted as recycling is plastic or foam, hoses, wires, chairs or electronics, plastic bags and party cups. For a complete list, check out recycleright.org.

Buy reusable bags and pop them in your car so you have them handy. Purchase small reusable bags for produce, or don’t use bags at all. Bring glass jars for nonperishable items like oats, nuts, seeds and other baking supplies. Check for compostable packaging in products – many companies label their items as 100 percent recyclable. Don’t overbuy. Every year, 40 percent of America’s food supply is wasted, so shop smart and don’t buy food that might go bad.

he Big Splash at Evans Park is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, an impressive feat for Grove City’s renowned waterpark. The 10-acre municipal family waterpark is known for its size, zerodepth entrance and two body slides. The pool also includes a six-lane lap area and water toys galore. Initially the waterpark was open for everyone, but due to popularity concerns, Grove City decided they would have to limit it to community members only. www.DiscoverGroveCity.com

What makes The Big Splash different than other community pools, is the staycation feeling you get when visiting. There are concessions, a huge green space for sunning, and even a live entertainment stage. When asked what her favorite summer treat is, she instantly piped up. “The Spongebob SquarePants ice cream popsicle!” Grove City Parks and Recreation, says a half million-dollar project is underway. “Our regular visitors might not notice the changes,” Sutherland says. “But this pool requires a lot of care and upkeep.”

Family Pool Day Essentials

Towels Pro tip: opt for beach towels rather than pool towels, as they’re bigger and offer more room to spread out over lawn chairs. Bring extras – you can always use another towel. Change of clothes Bring a set of dry clothes for your kids so they can change out of their wet bathing suits before going home. No one likes sitting in a car with soaked clothes – your kids and your car seats will thank you. Reusable water bottles Bring temperature-controlled water bottles so you can refill them and stay hydrated throughout the day. Make sure to ask the concession stand for free ice refills. Waterproof bag After a long pool day, what do you do with all your soaking wet, chlorinesmelling towels and clothes? Comb/de-tangler A pool day can really take a toll on your hair. If you plan on going anywhere afterwards, make sure to bring a comb and de-tangler spray. www.DiscoverGroveCity.com

On a Mission Olivia Jordan uses skills from homeschooling to propel her future By Marissa Smithinsky

20 July/August 2019

“Through sixth grade, my mom taught me from a book that outlined a specific curriculum,” says Jordan. “However, once I got into seventh grade, I took high school Latin through an online provider and we had a weekly online session where I would do my homework and tests.” It’s evident that Jordan’s homeschooling experience has prepared her for the future and college courses. And loving a challenge, Jordan says she enjoys AP classes. “Currently I’m taking AP literature and composition,” says Jordan. “We have book clubs and there are a lot of different people. It’s also a great atmosphere and we get to meet people from all over the world.” Homeschooling has not set her back socially, Jordan has found a great group of friends and praises www.DiscoverGroveCity.com

omeschooled since kindergarten, Olivia Jordan isn’t the typical graduating senior, but she does bring a lot to the table with her passions, talent and intelligence. Jordan has been involved in multiple activities and organizations throughout her life. Her mentors and parents say she is an outstanding student and has made astounding accomplishments. “Homeschooling has really opened a lot of doors for me,” says Jordan. “It has given me a lot of opportunities to do service for my community and excel academically. Along with her schooling, Jordan has been involved with the Ohio State Swim Club for nine years, the Grove City High School team for three years and the speech and debate club as well. “I started on the local Y team, the Columbus YMCA Swim Club, and at first I didn’t like it,” says Jordan. “I tried soccer and I realized I liked swimming much better. From that point forward, I chose swimming.” Jordan’s daily schedule as a homeschooled student is very structured, but she still leaves room for free time and extracurricular activities. “When I was younger, school didn’t take very long at all, I could get it done in the morning and I would get to play in the afternoon,” says Jordan. “But now, I’ve been starting school about 8 a.m. and then I usually go until I get everything I want to get done, which is around 4 or 5 p.m.” Although it seems like homeschooling would provide for more free time; it requires much more discipline as there are no classes or periods. Nevertheless, Jordan says that she does find a lot of structure with homeschooling. “It’s so much more personalized and I have been able to find classes that fit my needs,” says Jordan. “I’m not much of a fan of science or math and homeschooling has let me take online and college classes so that I can test out of everything. I should be able to completely test out of math and science when I go to college.” As a homeschooled student, Jordan doesn’t have daily tasks and instead completes a lot of self-study sessions. She says there are three distinct categories that she follows to accomplish the curriculum. Those include lessons from her mom, online providers and college classes.

homeschooling for all the opportunities and advancements it has given her. “You have to be more intentional about getting involved and making friends,” says Jordan. “I was able to make friends through swimming, my church and I’m in a speech and debate club specifically for home schoolers.” More importantly, Jordan says that homeschooling has given her more time to pursue other interests and service in her community. “For a long time, I have worked at the Stowe Mission Center of Central Ohio where I assist with teaching Sunday school, volunteer for toy giveaways and work at soup kitchens,” says Jordan. Jordan has also traveled across the Midwest for speech and debate competitions. “We go and we compete once a month,” says Jordan. “This year,

specifically, we have gone to Kentucky and Indiana.” Jordan has gone on several mission trips to Mexico and considers herself a creative person who enjoys painting and playing the ukulele. “With all the hard work in school, it is nice to sometimes just relax,” says Jordan. “I had to finish all my work ahead of time, but homeschooling gave me the opportunity to go to Mexico three different times on mission trips.” Jordan owes much of her diligence and future aspirations to her faith and community. “I met most of my friends from church and they are some of my best friends,” says Jordan. After graduation, Jordan will attend Union University in Tennessee and major in Teaching English as a Second Language and Spanish. “I feel like homeschooling has really prepared me well for college,” says Jordan. “I have learned how to study well and I want to use my language and teaching skills to go on more mission trips.” Union University is a four-year, liberal arts, topranked and private Christian university in Jackson, Tennessee and boasts robust ESL teaching and Spanish programs. “I actually applied to 10 different schools, which was a lotMost of Trusted work, Ad.pdf but it gave me lots ofPMoptions,” says 1 5/15/19 1:15

Grove City homeowners redesign bathroom with functionality and aesthetics in mind

W

hen Amber Harmon initially met with Grove City homeowners Paul and Carol White nearly a year ago to discuss the main objective for a bathroom remodel, the word functional positioned itself as a common theme. The Whites envisioned a user-friendly shower, sans grout, to make for easier maintenance. The project was a total floor-to-ceiling remodel with an entirely new shower, vanity, flooring and trim areas, along with a barn door entrance into the walk-in closet. Harmon, a designer with Elite Home Remodeling, Inc., knew exactly how to turn their dream bathroom into a reality in the span of just six weeks. “Functionality was the Whites’ biggest goal,” Harmon says. “That’s why we went with the solid surface onyx material for the shower.” The existing shower was removed in favor of a new custom one with onyx walls and basin. The shower has a custom frameless clear glass shower surround, large rain showerhead with a separate handheld sprayer, built-in storage and a half wall for privacy. Onyx is a man-made solid surface material that is grout free. The material is customizable, with the ability to fit any shower space, and comes in a variety of colors and finishes. It is a durable product with a lifetime warranty. Harmon says that it is a great option for people who do not want grout in their bathroom. “We installed new luxury vinyl, LVT flooring for several reasons,” Harmon says. “There is no grout so easy maintenance, the vinyl is www.DiscoverGroveCity.com

warmer and softer than tile floors, more forgiving than tile, offers a nice rustic modern feel with the wood appearance and comes in a variety of colors and options.”

The Whites also desired additional storage capacity in the bathroom, which led Harmon to design added linen storage. “We wanted to make it more practical but also, from the aesthetic standpoint, we updated to make it look more modern and fresh,” Harmon says. Modern, gray-stained cabinetry with a quartz countertop, faucet, mirror and light fixture were all part of the vanity redesign. A new linen cabinet attached to the vanity was added to maximize much needed storage in the bathroom.

“From a designer standpoint, it’s making sure everything comes together in a nice way that will complement and flow with the rest of the home. According to Harmon, barn doors are trending right now as well. One was installed to separate the White’s bathroom from the walk-in closet. “We got rid of the original hinge door in the closet and put in a barn door style that slides on a track,” Harmon says. Harmon, who has been with Elite Home Remodeling, Inc., for the past 10 years, has seen design trends cycle in and out. “I would say that 10-20 years ago it was all about the tub,” she says. “Everybody was putting in the big corner jacuzzi tub and then there was only enough room left for a really small shower...now it’s completely flipped to the shower being the focal point.” An example of a modern update would be substituting a large tub for a more dramatic walk-in shower that has either customized tilework or custom glass. “Obviously, there are other little trends that come and go, but the walk-in shower as the focal point is the classic look right now,” Harmon says.

Candles Burning by Michael McDowell and Tabitha King In 1958, after her father’s brutal murder, 7-year-old Calliope “Calley” Dakin and her gold-digging mother end up at a strange, isolated Florida boardinghouse where Calley sometimes hears the voices of the dead. What follows is an atmospheric Southern Gothic tale that is equal parts ghost story, mystery, family melodrama and coming-of-age saga.

Recommendations from Grove City Library

On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden Mia, the newest member of a deep-space crew that hops around the galaxy restoring old structures, reflects back on her a time at boarding school when she fell in love with another student before events tore them apart. This graphic novel features stunning, minimalist artwork, tender character interaction and an unconventional science fiction backdrop.

True Grit by Charles Portis Portis deconstructs the Western in this grim tale of revenge and justice. Instead of a hardened gunfighter or cowboy, our hero is 14-year-old Mattie Ross, who recruits a drunken marshal to track down the man who killed her father.

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas by Yoru Sumino The title seems to promise a freaky horror story, but instead, I Want to Eat Your Pancreas is a thoughtful, funny, bittersweet story of two teenaged classmates, one of whom is dying of pancreatic cancer and has made the other promise not to tell anyone.

This Body’s Not Big Enough for Both of Us by Edgar Cantero Adrian and Zoey are twin private detectives with a problem: they share the same body, with the logical Adrian constantly jockeying with the wild Zoey for control. When they are dragged into a gang war and stuck with a mob boss’s pre-teen daughter, genre and gender explode in this satire of hard-boiled film noir.

GUIDE

July Is National Park and Recreation Month! Every day is a great day to celebrate the ways parks and recreation make our community a better place: providing spaces for exercise or relaxing in nature, offering events where people interact with other humans instead of screens, organizing team sports opportunities for all skill levels - and so much more! But since 1985, July has been designated National Park and Recreation Month, because it is the perfect time to get out and see the great things happening at local parks and recreation facilities.

Game On! Find the Gnomes’ Homes

The 2019 National Park and Recreation Month theme is “Game On!” We hope you get out and visit the more than two dozen parks and points of interest in Grove City, many connected through an expanding network of multi-use trails. You know where Fryer and Gantz parks are, but how about Westgrove?

To encourage you to experience all our parks this summer, 20 gnomes are placed at parks around Grove City for you and your family to find. Pickup or download a chart to identify each uniquely painted gnome by his park home. The more gnomes you find, the greater your chance to win. When you post photos from your adventures, be sure to use #GameOnJuly and #GCGnomeHome to identify it! To be eligible for prizes, submit cards at EcoFest on Saturday, Aug. 10 or by Monday, Aug. 12 at the Kingston Center, 3226 Kingston Ave., (Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.; Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.) or Visit Grove City, 3995 Broadway (weekdays, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m.-1 p.m.). Watch for our special traveling ambassador gnome at special events throughout the summer! For more information on events, parks and this contest, visit GroveCityOhio.gov.

2019 Grove City Little League Sponsors

Without the support of our sponsors, the Grove City Parks and Recreation Department would not be able to offer such a successful Little League baseball program for local youth. We thank everyone who supported the 2019 Little League season, including board members, sponsors, players, coaches, assistant coaches and parents.
