Welcome to Licking County! One of my favorite quotes is from Newark native Jerrie Mock. Jerrie was the first woman to fly solo around the world. For a time, she called Licking County home. Jerrie said, “I knew one thing: I wanted to see the world.” She was a suburban mother of three, but in the spring of 1964, her handbag at her side and heels on her feet, she did exactly what she said she wanted to do. She saw the world. The reason I enjoy her words is because they ring true for all of us. Humans have that unquenchable need to explore; to find new places, to see and touch new things, to become an observer of cultures and traditions other than their own, to journey into the world. Explore Licking County’s mission is wrapped around the very idea of journeying into the unknown. Not the scary unknown, but rather the unknown that is exciting, engaging and yet somehow familiar. We take great pride in the Licking County journey; so much so, we’ve centered our 2017 Travel Magazine on six curated adventures. We feel the following pages will not only spark your curiosity (because explorers are curious, after all), but also provide a road map that takes you from one great experience to another. The fun thing about our journeys is that you can mix and match them. If you only want small bits of our history but a lot of local food, you can do that. Maybe a town experience also means a canoe trip in our great outdoors – you can do that, too. The sky is the limit, so let your imagination wander. We’re hoping that you might take our suggestions, but what we really want you to do is create your own experience in this amazing place. Read on, chart your course and make Jerrie proud. Go … explore,

After spending a day or night out on the town, it might be time to unwind and retreat back into nature. Licking County has you covered. From endless multipurpose trails and acres upon acres of woodlands and meadows, all the way to the Licking River and Buckeye Lake, you’re sure to be awed as you explore the region’s natural charm and beauty.
Licking Park District There’s a lot to do in Licking County’s 11 parks, reserves and preserves. Let your dog roam free at the leash-free dog park at Infirmary Mound Park, or bring your binoculars for bird watching at the Ohio Canal Greenway. Travel on horseback on the parks’ multi-purpose trails, or spend a peaceful day on the water fishing and canoeing at the Riverview Preserve.
On the Land
Licking County’s various trails cater to every outdoorsman or outdoorswoman. If you ride horseback or enjoy the thrill of mountain biking, there are plenty of paths to choose from. But if a quiet hike or leisurely stroll is more your style, the Lobdell Reserve offers splendid cliffside views. You can even stop to play a game of disc golf on the reserve’s professional course.
On the Water
Buckeye Lake – or the “Big Swamp,” as American Indians called it. As Ohio’s first state park, it has an extensive history as a vacation spot for those who simply love to be on the water. In 2015, it became necessary to act on issues surrounding the lake’s dam, but the state’s plans for the much-loved destination are expected to breathe fresh life into its 3,100 acres of water. explorelc.org

Flint Ridge Flint Ridge offers educational group tours that are perfect for anyone interested in Hopewell culture. 2,000 years ago, the Hopewell people discovered Flint Ridge and found it instrumental to their survival. From the flint, they were able to craft hunting weapons and other tools. During the tours and a visit to the nearby Flint Ridge Museum, you can make your own shell necklace or arrowhead.
The Lazy River At Granville It’s not a true outdoors experience without a little camping. Rent a lodge, or go back to basics and pitch a tent. The grounds are widespread with activities – laser tag, ziplining, beach volleyball or a dip in the recently renovated swimming pool. The Lazy River proves that the Welsh Hills are the perfect spot to unplug from life for awhile and enjoy the fresh air.
Dawes Arboretum
Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve Follow the flow of the Licking River and you’ll run across Blackhand Gorge, east of Newark. Named after a prehistoric marking that was destroyed by dynamite during the construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1828, the sandstone gorge hosts the only bike trail you’ll find in Ohio’s state nature preserve system.

In 1929, Dawes Arboretum was founded by Berman and Bertie Dawes with a simple goal in mind: to share the beauty of trees and encourage the preservation of our forests. Look down from the top of Oak Hill and into the valley where, 10,000 years ago, a glacier rested. Take a day to explore the Woodland Garden trail, where you can find native plants such as foamflower and wild geranium.
Did you know? Each year, the sugar maple trees near Woodland Garden provide sap for the maple syrup that’s bottled and placed inside Dawes Arboretum’s log cabin.

Bob Williams Licking County is central Ohio’s back yard, says Bob Williams, Licking Park District director – a place you can escape to in order to rejuvenate and explore.
“People came here for a reason 2,000 years ago,” Williams says. “And they’re still coming here today.” There’s diversity in Licking County’s natural wonders, Williams says, adding that while Licking County may be small, you can certainly see a lot: the rolling hills that developed from ancient glaciers, meadows and forests waiting to be hiked through, a river perfect for a day of kayaking. “We want to get people outdoors,” Williams says. “We want to get people outside doing something they’ve never done before.” Taking some time to explore outside does wonders for your health, too. Why bother with a pricey gym membership when a park or hiking trail could be your fitness center? “One of the least expensive ways to improve your health and wellness is to go hiking and get outdoors,” Williams says. “And for most people, if they spend just 30 minutes in the park, they’ve already done something active at a fitness level that’s comfortable to them”

There’s something to be said about the hustle and bustle of a thriving town – Saturdays dedicated to shopping, afternoons spent browsing art galleries, evenings taking in a show at the theater. Culture certainly isn’t an area where Licking County is lacking. Here, you can find a taste of the big city right along with the comfort of a small town.
Downtown Newark Newark’s historic downtown is more than the county seat. With the completion of the Canal Market District, now more than ever, Newark is a hot spot for anyone looking for a day out. Step into a winery, trendy boutique shop or art gallery for a taste of what the local businesses have to offer.
A Taste of the Town In Licking County, you’re in no danger of running out of dining options. As the name might suggest, the walls of Snapshots Lounge in Granville are covered with framed photos and, if you didn’t already feel right at home, the food certainly will taste like it; Snapshots Lounge makes a point to use locally-grown ingredients. Meanwhile, the Broadway Pub in Granville offers a substantial craft beer menu as well as your traditional pub fare, with a few surprises along the way – think grilled mahi-mahi, or spaghetti and meatballs with housemade marinara. And, if you’re looking to spice up your outing even more, Park Place Bistro in Newark offers a true fine dining experience. Blackened catfish, sea bass and lobster mac and cheese are sure to thrill any seafood lover, especially when topped off with a bowl of blood orange sorbet or creme brûlée for dessert. explorelc.org

The Midland Theatre The Midland Theatre in Newark has a storied history that dates all the way back to the 1920s when it served as the town’s stunning new entertainment venue. Today, it’s still a pillar of the community, offering programming that suits every taste, whether you’re an orchestra enthusiast or a stand-up comedy fanatic.
Thirty One West Newark’s Thirty One West opened in fall 2016 with a goal in mind: unite the Licking County community through music. This music venue acts as host for performers right in Licking County’s back yard, as well as performers known on a national level.
The Buxton Inn After a day spent perusing the shops on Granville’s East and West Broadway, you might be in search of a place to rest your head for the evening – or weekend. Head a little farther down East Broadway and you’ll run into the historic 19th century Buxton Inn. Book your rooms in the inn’s Main House and you’ll get to stay in the original guestrooms and overlook the inn’s courtyard. 18

Did you know? Newark earned the nickname “Little Chicago” in the early 1900s when multiple theaters and ballrooms were being constructed. The space that Thirty One West renovated was built in 1902 and was formerly a dance hall.
Sisters: Jennifer Valenzuela and Adrienne Molnar In December 2014, Jennifer Valenzuela and her family made the decision to purchase Granville’s Buxton Inn. Valenzuela, her husband, her brother and her father were already in the renovations business, Valenzuela serving as an interior designer. They were in search of a project that had meaning, and would diversify their resumes. The Granville community was concerned with finding a buyer who would honor the inn’s original beauty and uniqueness, but had faith in Valenzuela and her family. “You have to think of the people who came before us,” Valenzuela says. “They took the time to preserve this building, so we really owe it to the people who put in the hard work years before us. It’s an honor for my family to be able to own and operate this inn – to care for it and restore it.”
Bryn Du Art Center & Licking County Arts Bryn Du Art Center in Granville offers plenty for art lovers both young and old. Here, you can find local art exhibitions along with a plethora of art classes. Create your own oil painting, or spend date night creating art together. If you’re looking to buy or browse art with a local touch, members of Licking County Arts sell their original artwork at the LCA Gallery and gift shop as well as at monthly art shows.
Valenzuela describes the Buxton Inn as a “living history museum.” Guests can gaze out of the same windows as Abraham Lincoln, one of the inn’s more famous guests, or walk up the same staircase as the weary travelers who sought out rooms more than 200 years ago. During the renovation, Valenzuela says they uncovered the original ledger Lincoln signed.
Tom Atha Tom Atha, owner of Earthwork Recording Studio, purchased Thirty One West’s space and took on a massive renovation project to transform it into what it is today: Newark’s newest spot to watch local and national talent perform. It wasn’t easy, but it was necessary.
“We have one opportunity to save our historic spaces and keep them vibrant,” Atha says. Thirty One West’s space was originally an early 1900s dance hall. “As great as our new development spaces are, there is a connection to the past when you visit our historic spaces.” While searching for a space for his new project, Atha says he and his team looked at small coffee shops and similar spaces. But 31 W. Church St. is what caught his eye. “It was clear what the space was intended for,” Atha says. “In the past it was a ballroom turned furniture showroom, but really, it was meant to bring people together.”
“This was Granville’s first business,” Valenzuela says. “Statewide, it’s a part of our history.”

In 1808, Licking County, named after the salt licks from the banks of the river that flows through the region, was established, and Newark was named its county seat. But there was life before settlers traveled west, before the Ohio Company, a land speculation company organized by prestigious Virginians including George Washington’s own brothers, traveled to the area in 1751. In fact, life in Licking County began more than 2,000 years ago.
The Hopewell People Prehistoric American Indians, who were part of the Hopewell culture, lived along the rivers found in northeastern and midwestern parts of the country. And, based on the number of Hopewell ceremonial sites we have found here, we know the Hopewell people thrived in Licking County.
Newark Earthworks
The Pyramids at Giza, Machu Picchu, Stonehenge. We travel far and wide to see ancient history with our own eyes when it’s right here in our back yard. Licking County is home to the world’s largest earthen enclosures: the Newark Earthworks. It’s a widespread belief that the Hopewell people built the Earthworks between 100 B.C. and 500 A.D.; originally, the magnificent structure covered more than four square miles. Today, there are three surviving segments: the Great Circle Earthworks, the Wright Earthworks and the Octagon Earthworks.
Blackhand Gorge
There are many theories behind the prehistoric hand-shaped American Indian petroglyph that was destroyed by dynamite in the 1800s. Some believe that the hand served as a symbol to passing tribes that they must travel in peace, but we’ll never know for sure.
Flint Ridge
The Hopewell people traveled from surrounding areas to quarry flint at Flint Ridge. Here, you can still see the ancient pits they left behind while crafting hunting tools and instruments.

Sterling Theater Today the Sterling Theater hosts open mic nights and other talent but, when it was originally built in 1916, it was home to Pataskala’s village government.
National Heisey Glass Museum In 1895, German immigrant and Union Army private A.H. Heisey founded the A.H. Heisey Company in Newark. His company brought beautiful glass figurines, tableware and blown glassware to the people of Newark. Today, the National Heisey Glass Museum works to preserve the factory’s history by housing a collection of Heisey’s glassware.
Licking County Courthouse Standing in Newark’s public square, it’s impossible to miss the Licking County Courthouse. It is undergoing renovations to preserve its historic beauty while also reflecting the modern age – but there are a few things worth knowing about where it came from, and the courthouse that came before it. The current courthouse was built in 1878 after its predecessor was lost in a fire. The first courthouse was constructed in 1808, built from logs, and also served as a church.
Louis Sullivan Building Did you know? In 1804, four years before the original courthouse was built, about 20 families lived in Newark.

The Midwest region was lucky enough to see eight of Chicago architect Louis Sullivan’s famous structures pop up during the early 1900s – and Licking County is home to one of them. The father of skyscrapers built one of his “jewel box” banks right here in Newark.
Granville Inn When the Granville Inn opened its doors on June 26, 1924, as many as 5,000 guests attended, enjoying a lawn buffet and private smoking room. In 2013, the inn was purchased by Denison University. Today, there are 36 guest rooms and three suites donned with luxurious linens.
Doug Smith
Marcia Downes
Let’s say you want to explore Licking County’s history, but off the beaten path. Where do you start?
At The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art and Technology, Marcia Downes says history can – and should – be experienced with the hands, the eyes and all the senses.
“I think some of the best-kept secrets are the buildings that are tucked away in places a lot of other people aren’t aware of or that you don’t have easy access to,” says Licking County Historian Doug Smith, mentioning the Outville and Johnstown depots. “A lot of things get missed in the fast-paced nature of everyday life.” Many citizens – city officials, innkeepers, entrepreneurs, to name a few – are stepping up to preserve Licking County for generations to come.
“In some ways, Licking County is like a lot of other communities,” Smith says. “But it’s the historic locations and people that really make it special. They go out of their way to help promote, share and appreciate what we have here.” But it’s not just Licking County’s modern people who have made a difference.
“History is so hands-on,” says Downes, managing director. “We want children to touch, hold and engage with artifacts from Licking County’s history and pre-history.” This approach, she says, is what helps children retain — and learn.
“If history can come alive through interactive engagement, they will remember,” Downes says. The Works is constantly striving to find new ways to connect all citizens, but especially children, with history in meaningful ways. That engagement can spark an interest in history that can change a child’s life. Moving forward into the digital age, Downes says, it’s important to document exhibits and make them accessible to the broadest audience possible. “I think that technology will be our lifeline to history,” she says.
Lucky for Licking County, it’s filled with locals with Smith’s dedication.
Did you know? In 1964, Newark’s own Geraldine “Jerrie” Mock was the first woman to fly solo around the world. A true-to-size bronze sculpture of Mock stands in The Works’ courtyard.

Antique Shopping If finding hidden treasures is a hobby of yours, Licking County’s antique shops are home to several rare and hard-to-find items you’re unlikely to encounter anywhere else. Alexandria Antiques in Alexandria has collections of fine china, glassware and furniture, while Finders Keepers Village in Heath is more of a “village within a store.” More than 200 vendors are represented at Finders Keepers Village. Apple Crate Antiques can be found right next to Thirty One West, making it an easy destination while you’re visiting the county seat, and J&P’s Antiques is only a short drive down Union Street.

Have a taste for tacos? Every Tuesday is Taco Tuesday at Buckeye Lake Brewery, and an array of food trucks stop by Thursday through Sunday.
Did you know? In 2016, the Buckeye Lake Historical Society aquired an 88-foot sternwheeler: The Queen of the Lake III. When the lake’s waters rise, the sternwheeler will be used for dinner cruises, lake tours and other activities, helping keep Buckeye Lake at the top of every tourist’s list.

An afternoon or just a few hours at one of Licking County’s farms or orchards is just enough time to pick some apples or find that perfect pumpkin or Christmas tree. Dawes Arboretum has about 2,000 acres of sprawling gardens and greenery while, every year in September and October, Pigeon Roost Farm hosts PumpkinFest – a family-friendly outing with corn mazes, pumpkin displays and a climbing wall. The Orchard House Bed and Breakfast So, you’ve spent your day out and about in Licking County, and now you’re dying to spend the night. Granville’s Orchard House Bed and Breakfast offers a night’s stay like you’ve never experienced before – luxury camping, or “glamping.” It’s just like camping, but without the dirt and grime. With a queensized bed, a private bathroom and add-ons such as end-of-day bonfires and tentside refreshments, you get all the benefits of camping with a touch of comfort.
“Ye Olde Mill is a beautiful place where friends and families can make memories,” Dager says. “You can come here for a visit, get a great meal, take a tour and learn about ice cream history. But you can also enjoy a picnic, feed the ducks and wander the grounds.” Ice cream’s not just a sweet treat – it’s a nostalgic one, too, bringing up memories of summer and birthday parties. That alone makes it worth a spot on your day trip itinerary.
“Ice cream is the one food that has an uncanny ability to take people back to their own childhood,” Dager says. “It conjures up favorite memories of the best times of our lives.” Velvet Ice Cream has been family-owned for more than 100 years, so Dager says it’s important the company stays true to its history and honors the legacy of those who came before – not just the people who were employed, but guests, too. “Our employees, our community, our customers and everyone who visits Ye Olde Mill are all part of that story,” Dager says. “They love knowing the history of Velvet Ice Cream and what it means to our community.”

Tilton Hollow Farm
Tilton Hollow Farm, nestled in Fallsbury Township, prides itself on raising its livestock humanely and ethically – and its owners are willing to share a few tidbits they’ve learned along the way. Throughout the year, the farm hosts various classes and activities. Learn how to make mulled cider, pumpkinbased recipes and your own cheese.
“My family has been in local food for 21 years,” says Bryn Bird, market director at the Canal Market District. “The movement just continues to grow. The fact that we have the only permanent farm market structure in the region shows that we’ve included the movement in the economic development plan.” So what, exactly, makes this area an ideal location for the movers and shakers in the food industry? Agriculture is one of Licking County’s leading industries, Bird says. Not only that, but the county is situated in close proximity to larger metropolitan areas such as Columbus and New Albany. “Licking County is the perfect day trip (from those areas),” Bird says. The creation of Newark’s thriving Canal Market District has only helped the area’s appeal grow in the eyes of foodies everywhere. Some even claim it’s the “best thing that happened to downtown Newark,” says Bird.
Where to Stay Elizabeth on Main
What better way to take advantage of Licking County’s unique cuisine than to stay at a local bed and breakfast? Elizabeth on Main, found in Johnstown, offers customizable dining options, luncheons and afternoon tea. So if you’re looking for a romantic, candlelit dinner with a special someone, this turn-ofthe-century Victorian home can offer all that – and more.
“We hear that over and over again,” Bird says. “Around 60 percent of the people who come to the Canal Market District have never been to a farmers’ market, so it’s their first interaction with their local food community. They get to meet their local farmer.”

For a luxurious night or two, the Trout Club’s villas overlook the course’s 18th hole and include a kitchenette, trendy bathrooms and large porches as well as access to an outdoor pool.
Did you know? The recently completed TC Pavilion can accommodate 160-350 guests, with an indoor and outdoor bar, high ceilings, a pool, and even a fireplace for the wintertime.
The Virtues Golf Club Travel a bit further west and you’ll run into the Virtues Golf Club. The club can accommodate weddings, banquets, baby showers and more – but the grounds are also open for gatherings such as communions, baptisms, proms and fundraisers.
Historic Jail Tours If you’re looking to add a bit of history and entertainment to your company outing or reunion, the Licking County Historic Jail offers both public and private tours. It first opened in 1889 and has a long and storied history, and is famous for the indictments of the 58 members of a mob who hanged detective Carl Etherington. Etherington shot a saloon owner in self defense while raiding speakeasies for illegal alcohol. 36

Licking County and its cities and towns might not look like Ohio’s “three C’s,” but that doesn’t mean you won’t find the perfect space for your next family reunion or business retreat.
“We have everything the big city has,” says Bruce Cramer, Bryn Du Mansion’s executive director. “Except for big city prices.” Cramer says he has witnessed firsthand the way Licking County’s event spaces have changed the tune of corporate events – and the minds of business owners. “I think they have figured out if you want to have a productive meeting, you need to step away from your day-to-day chores,” Cramer says. “If you can come to a unique venue, that adds to the productivity of the meeting – and fun is part of productivity.” Wedding days are one of the most memorable days for a couple, so Cramer says the Bryn Du Mansion – which hosts about two weddings every weekend – does everything in its power to make sure the day is perfect. “Every wedding we do here is the most important wedding for that couple,” Cramer says. “And everyone on staff feels that way, too.”
