About the Chamber

e’ve come a long way since a small group of New Albany business owners got together and formed the New Albany Chamber of Commerce in 1996. The Chamber’s first home was in a garage along Rose Run Creek and hired its first president on Jan. 1, 1997. In its first year, the organization attracted 52 members and formed a board of trustees that included notable business leaders who are still active in the business community today.

In the years that followed, the offices moved first to the Plain Township fire station, then to a suite on the second floor of 220 Market St. in 2002. Some of our organization’s milestones and achievements: • Preparing 1,100 new employee packets for Aetna, the first large company to locate in the New Albany business campus; • Hiring an office manager in September 2000; • Publishing a New Albany map, community calendar, membership directory and monthly newsletter, among other resources; • Helping plan annual events such as the Taste of New Albany at Market Square and the Community Update Breakfast; • Introducing the New Albany Business Expo in 2006; • Beginning to develop a Strategic Plan and holding Business After Hours starting in 2008; and, • Welcoming our 500th member in 2009. The Chamber moved to its current offices at 55 W. Main St. in February 2012. The new location provides visible street presence and a convenient parking lot for new and existing residents, visitors and Chamber members. In June 2013 and 2014, the New Albany Chamber was named one of central Ohio’s Largest Chambers of Commerce by Business First. Under the current Chamber leadership, the Chamber is prepared for the future growth and refinement of the New Albany business community. A variety of members graciously volunteer their time, assisting on committees such as the HR Council and the Member Activation and Connection Team, advancing the Chamber’s mission to build business success in New Albany.

Chamber volunteers also help put together and staff our largest signature event, the Taste of New Albany. Chamber members are provided a host of benefits depending upon the membership level selected, of which there are five – General, $200; Gold, $1,000; Platinum, $2,500; Diamond, $5,000; and Champion, $10,000. Benefit examples include, but are not limited to, networking opportunities at Chamber member luncheons; the ability to post unlimited events, “hot deals” and job opportunities for their company on the Chamber website; access to the Chamber membership list; after-hour events and access to committees that provide networking opportunities with Chamber members; opportunities to be featured in the Chamber’s monthly electronic newsletter, on the Chamber website, in email blasts and a listing in the annual Membership Directory and Community Guide; a Chamber member plaque and member decal to display at their business and use of the Chamber logo for their website; Chamber membership referrals to resident and visitors; Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting ceremonies for new businesses; special rates on health insurance, workers’ compensation, and newspaper advertising; and participation in the Chamber’s annual signature events with sponsorship opportunities. Our annual signature events are: • The Community Update – Next in New Albany, which provides the latest information on New Albany development; • Legislative Breakfast, at which members learn first-hand from federal, state and local official about legislation that could affect their business; • Community Business Expo, an annual event that showcases member business services; • Holiday Luncheon and Delta Awards Presentation, which includes opportunities for business and leadership recognition; • The Taste of New Albany, a culinary event highlighting the best area restaurants have to offer. hough New Albany was founded in 1837, the majority of its development has taken place since the 1980s, when Les Wexner, chairman and CEO of Limited Brands, purchased large tracts of land with the goal of creating a community. New Albany’s distinctive Georgian architecture and signature white fences, part of the aesthetic Wexner and real estate developer the New Albany Company put in place, set it apart from other central Ohio suburbs. New Albany gained city status in 2011 and has the benefit of being a master-planned community.

Today, the population of the city of New Albany is approximately 8,000, with a median age of 37 and a median household income of $172,321. It has a library, an arts center, 32 miles of leisure trails, a community garden and a farmers market, and its health and wellness center is scheduled to open in early 2015. The New Albany Community Foundation, started with a seed grant from The New Albany Company, has become integral in the community’s development. A host of generous families and companies have contributed

millions of dollars in the areas of education and lifelong learning, arts and culture, health and wellness, the environment, and historic preservation and community building. Some of the biggest names in politics and the arts have headlined the Foundation’s annual fundraiser, A Remarkable Evening, and even more world-renowned speakers have been tapped for the Jefferson Series, which is in its second season. Located just 22 miles from the state capital of Columbus, New Albany is located in Plain Township. Most of it lies in Franklin

County, with a small section on the east that is within Licking County.

Arts and Entertainment

The jewel of the New Albany arts scene is the Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts. The McCoy center has become a community hub, hosting lectures, musicals, variety shows, student assemblies and private events. It is also the home of the New Albany Symphony Orchestra, a 115-member orchestra that performs approximately five shows a year, including a Holiday Spectacular each December. The New Albany Arts Council is the parent organization for the New Albany Community Band, New Albany Chorus and Center Stage Singers. The arts council also organizes a children’s musical theater production each summer. Among the many annual events residents enjoy is the New Albany Classic Invitational Grand Prix and Family Day, an international equestrian show jumping competition combined with a family fair day.

Government

The city of New Albany uses the Mayor-Council-Administrator form of government. New Albany Mayor Nancy Ferguson presides over Council meetings and Mayor’s Court and performs ceremonial duties such as assisting with ribbon cuttings. Council meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at Village Hall, 99 W. Main St. The Chamber and the city work closely together to attract and retain high-caliber businesses. New Albany is located within Plain Township. The township is overseen by an administrator and three elected trustees. In addition to managing zoning in unincorporated areas, the township oversees the Fire Department and the Plain Township Aquatic Center. Township

Health

It started with a walking club, and now, the grassroots organization Healthy New Albany Inc. has blossomed with a full offering of events and activities, all working toward its goal of making New Albany the healthiest city in the nation. Healthy New Albany backs the 50-plot New Albany Community Garden at 20 Village Hall Rd., the 10-week summer New Albany Farmers Market, the once-a-month winter Farmers Market and a lecture series, which brings in renowned experts on a wide range of health-related topics to speak to the community. The New Albany Walking Classic, the organization’s premier event held each September, celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2014, selling out in April with 3,500 registrations. The Philip Heit Center for Healthy New Albany – which will combine medical, fitness and community programming in one location – is slated to open in January 2015. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital will offer clinical services at the facility. For more information, visit www. healthynewalbany.org. Mt. Carmel New Albany Hospital, on Smith’s Mill Road, is a specialty hospital

that focuses on orthopedic, neurologic and musculoskeletal care. It is recognized as among the best surgery centers in the world. Pelotonia, a bicycle ride ranging from 25 to 100 miles to raise money for cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, ends in New Albany. It’s a celebratory homecoming for the many New Albany residents who participate, as our city has more Pelotonia riders than any other community.

Library

The New Albany Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Public Library offers patrons access to more than 1.7 million items via its network of 21 locations. The New Albany library has two meeting rooms that can be reserved by both nonprofit and for-profit entities at no charge. The New Albany Meeting Room has a maximum capacity of 70 and has a projection screen, whiteboard, TV with DVD and VCR player, easel and podium as well as a microwave, refrigerator and sink. The New Albany Conference Room has a whiteboard and can seat 10.

Living

The New Albany Country Club Communities is the city’s largest development, prominently featuring the city’s signature Georgian architecture. Residents have the option of joining the private club, which has a 27-hole golf course, golf and tennis academies, a Championship Croquet Lawn, a full-service fitness center, one indoor and four outdoor pools, salon and spa services, and an elegant clubhouse with family and formal dining rooms, a casual café, a men’s grill/winter pub, and terrace seating available in the warmer months. city, the hotel has two conference rooms available. The Buckeye Meeting Room can hold up to 50 people, and the Big Red Board Room can seat up to 20. On-site catering is available, and high-speed wireless Internet is complimentary. Currently under construction is a Hampton that is scheduled to open in fall 2015. Just eight minutes away, Easton Town Center features 39 retail and dining establishments in its indoor-outdoor, pedestrian-friendly environment. Easton has town squares, fountains a mini train village and a dine-in movie theater.

Shopping/Lodging

Small clusters of shops around the city are ideal for browsing on foot. The historic Village Center and Market Square are both popular destinations for shopping and dining. Market Square is expanding with an additional 26,000-square-foot building featuring retail and restaurant space scheduled to open in early 2015. New Albany Parks & Recreation is a joint parks district formed through an agreement between the city, the school district and Plain Township. Headed by an Olympic silver medalist in swimming, New Albany Parks & Recreation offers self-defense, men’s basketball and co-ed cornhole, kickball, soccer, softball and volleyball as well as a host of youth leagues and camps. The 135-acre Bevelhymer Park has 32 fields for baseball, softball, soccer, football and lacrosse. It also includes two tennis courts, a walking trail and playgrounds. Thompson Park has tennis and basketball courts, full-size athletic fields and a playground on 65 acres. A pavilion with seating for 60 is available for rent starting at $20 per two hours. At 2.5 acres, Wexner Community Park includes a pavilion with seating for 60 that includes a fireplace, a warming kitchen, restrooms and an adjacent playground. The pavilion is available for rent starting at $60 per two hours. Park fields at Bevelhymer and Thompson parks are also available for rental. Adjacent to Wexner Community Park is Plain Township Aquatic Center, which has an Olympic-sized pool with two water slides and a children’s water park. New Albany is also near several Metro Parks: Blendon Woods and Inniswood are closest and provide opportunities for hiking and recreation. Schools

The New Albany-Plain Local School District serves approximately 4,500 students on its 200-acre learning community

campus. Unlike other central Ohio districts, all district buildings are located on this campus, creating an environment in which students, faculty and staff can share resources and learning opportunities. A new building, scheduled to open in fall 2014, will house students in grades 2-8 and feature a competition-sized gymnasium. It should meet the needs of the district’s student population through 2024. The district is dedicated to its vision of “becoming the leader in reinventing education.” In 2013, teams of parents, students, staff and community members researched best educational practices in a variety of fields and, in 2014, they presented their findings for implementation. Local businesses such as Commercial Vehicle Group (CVG) have forged partnerships with the district. CVG worked with students in STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and math), donating $10,000 to fund robotic camera vehicles used on a student trip to South Africa last year. Bob Evans and CAPA worked together to bring in artists and performers from Broadway tours to speak with students. Abercrombie & Fitch hosted a diversity and anti-bullying symposium. In cooperation with the New Albany Community Foundation, events such as A Remarkable Evening and the Jefferson Series provide students with the opportunity to interact with world-renowned speakers such as Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and humanitarian Dr. Paul Farmer. The high school has a four-year graduation rate of 98.1 percent. More than half of the high school population takes at least one advanced placement course, and 78 percent of Advanced Placement (AP) students pass the AP exam, paving the way for success at the post-secondary level.

Worship

There are houses of worship in the New Albany area for people of many faiths. These welcoming communities offer opportunities for religious education, youth groups and choral and music groups, among other activities.

ew Albany prioritizes job growth as the essential ingredient to uphold a vibrant local economy. The 3,000-acre New Albany Business Park – the largest business park in the state – is an attractive location for businesses of all sizes.

The park is adjacent to three highway interchanges and has dual-feed electric power and access to a fiber optic network that can save business owners as much as 20 percent off the cost of their digital needs. The Health Care Cluster includes general medical consultants, Central Ohio Surgical Institute, Joint Implant Surgeons, Inc., Mount Carmel New Albany Surgical Hospital, New Albany Orthopedic Anesthesia, New Albany Surgical Center, New Albany Surgical Foundation, Ohio Sleep Medicine & Neuroscience, OrthoNeuro, PharmaForce, Inc., Physiotherapy Associates, STi Healthcare and Venture Therapeutics. The Personal Care and Beauty Cluster includes Accel Inc., Alene Candles, Anomatic, Arminak & Associates, Axium Plastics, ExhibitPro, Jeyes, KDC, Sonoco and VeePak.
