It is my great pleasure to serve as the 2013 Chair of the Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce. This year brings us together in celebration of our community and businesses of all shapes and sizes. The Chamber’s new initiatives – including its tiered membership program and strengthened ties with the City of Upper Arlington, TechColumbus, Leadership UA, Upper Arlington City Schools, the Upper Arlington Civic Association and the Upper Arlington Community Improvement Corporation – are signs of how active and responsive the chamber is. Opportunities have never been better for members of the UA Chamber! Through our largest annual public Chamber events – Celebration! in March, Market Place in May and the Taste of UA in August – we are moving to improve the local economy and strengthen business here. In addition, our Entrepreneurial Division continues to explore opportunities for new business growth and business development. The Chamber has an amazing working board of directors devoted to serving our membership and the area business community. Their shared expertise continues to build a more successful Chamber experience for all members and local businesses. Taste of UA Committee 2013

The Chamber’s largest annual event is the Taste of Upper Arlington. The Taste is a showcase for all member businesses and a chance for the chamber to interact with the community. UA Welcomes First Hotel

ou might think there aren’t too many “firsts” on the horizon for a community fast approaching its centennial, but Upper Arlington is readying to welcome its first hotel in summer 2013. On many levels, this new addition will be a plus for the businesses and residents in our community. A Hilton Homewood Suites is rapidly rising from the ground within the Lane Avenue commercial district as part of a mixed-use project – another first for UA – that also includes retail, commercial space, apartments and structured parking blended seamlessly within one site. The five-story Homewood Suites will offer 109 rooms that will cater to shortterm visitors and business guests who may be in town for a few weeks. With its

convenient location in the midst of the Lane Avenue corridor, guests will have immediate access to the surrounding shops and restaurants, including the new Whole Foods, slated to open in spring of 2013. And of course, OSU and state Route 315 are just minutes away, providing guests quick and easy access to the Central Ohio region. “The City’s leaders anticipated the day a hotel might open in our community and took steps to establish a hotel/ motel tax several years ago,” said City Manager Ted Staton. “This foresight has positioned us to benefit from a new revenue source regularly used by communities across the nation. Plus, upon the hotel’s opening, we can begin dedicating some of those dollars back into visitors’ bureau

activities promoting UA as a tourism or business destination, thereby attracting additional overnight visitors and further boosting the income generating potential for the City, our hotel and the community’s retail and service industries.” “We are hearing many positive comments from the shops and businesses in the corridor,” said Community & Economic Development Manager Bob Lamb. “Our business community understands how the hotel and the mixed-use project will further enhance an already successful district and further stamp Lane Avenue as an impressive gateway to Upper Arlington.” For additional details on the Homewood Suites Hotel and mixed-use project on Lane Avenue, visit www.uaoh.net.
