Dear Chamber Members, Thank you for being a member of the Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce. Because of you, we have assembled a vibrant network of more than 400 businesses in and around Upper Arlington. We’ve developed strong partnerships with our city and our school district, helping to support a healthy business environment, promote economic growth and enhance the quality of life in our city. And, we’ve brought the community together for outstanding events such as the Taste of UA and our first-ever Run UA 5K race. Together, we are making Upper Arlington a great place to do business. We’ve accomplished a lot, but even greater opportunities lie ahead. Our work in 2016 will focus on merging with the Grandview Area Chamber of Commerce to form the Tri-Village Chamber Partnership. With a combined membership of more than 700, the Tri-Village Chamber will provide more opportunities to network, promote our businesses and learn from one another. We’ll continue to host great events that allow us to connect with clients and customers. About the Chamber For almost 40 years, the Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce has been an integral part of the Upper Arlington business community. Supported by a volunteer Board of Trustees and dedicated staff members, we are a non-profit member organization serving the needs of more than 400 businesses in the Upper Arlington area. The Chamber promotes the attraction, retention and expansion of area businesses by providing its members with networking and marketing opportunities, benefit programs and community advocacy.

Our Place in the Community We firmly believe that a favorable business climate and a strong and vibrant community go hand in hand. We place great value in our partnerships with the City of Upper Arlington, our schools and our public library. Our members are active in a number of local service organizations, such as the Older Adult Resource Group, the UA Civic Association and the UA Community Improvement Corp. Working closely with these and other organizations, our aim is to make Upper Arlington an attractive place to live, raise a family and do business.

New Opportunitites On February 1, the Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce merged with the Grandview Area Chamber of Commerce to form the Tri-Village Chamber Partnership. This combination will bring exciting new opportunities to our members and the communities of Upper Arlington, Grandview Heights and Marble Cliff. With a combined membership of more than 700 local businesses, the Tri-Village Chamber Partnership will be a strong advocate for economic development and business growth in Upper Arlington and the surrounding area.

Events Each year, the Chamber hosts several signature events, raising awareness for the Chamber and providing opportunities for our members to engage with customers and clients. In August, we presented our 22nd annual Taste of UA, a food festival and business expo that has become a fixture in the Upper Arlington community. Other signature events include our Community Celebration, held in March, and the Run UA 5K in late summer.

It’s All in the Family

Long-time businesses have UA roots Since the Schoedinger family first moved to Upper Arlington in the 1950s, four generations have called the city their home. The family opened Upper Arlington’s first funeral home in 1961. Now, Schoedinger has 14 funeral homes in Columbus and recently renovated the Upper Arlington chapel. “We think it’s a great community,” says President Michael Schoedinger. The Schoedingers are not alone in their opinion. Upper Arlington is full of families with a long-standing passion for and responsibility toward carrying on businesses from generation to generation. As the city has grown, company founders and their descendants have continued to find Upper Arlington the best place to raise a family.

Schoedinger Funeral and Cremation Services Michael is the sixth-generation owner of Schoedinger Funeral and Cremation Services, started by German immigrant and craftsman Philip Schoedinger in 1855 under the name of Schoedinger & Brown. By the time John Schoedinger called Guilford Road home, he was the fourth generation working in the family business. He and wife, Juliet, raised sons David and John (Jay), who are now chairman and vice chairman of the board, respectively. Michael’s father, David, decided to raise his own children in Upper Arlington as well. Michael and his younger brother, Kevin, are both graduates of Upper Arlington High School. Michael’s two children currently attend. As the Schoedinger family expanded, the city around it grew. The Upper Arlington funeral home A ribbon cutting ceremony for the renovation of Schoedinger’s Upper Arlington funeral home was held Dec. 18. is the company’s busiest location and, for a long time, also featured the least functional building of all 14 locations. Now, two years of planning have culminated in the completion of a 4,500-square-foot addition and an extensive remodel and renovation. After closing for five months, the refurbished funeral home features a covered portico, outdoor chapel, food preparation area and reception space. Schmidt’s Sausage Haus While the Schmidt’s retail location is based in German Village, the family boasts long-time ties to Upper Arlington. “Our roots in Arlington go way back, almost to 1916, when the King brothers started Upper Arlington,” says Vice President Andy Schmidt. Schmidt’s started out as a German Village meat-packing house in 1886. Founder J. Fred Schmidt’s son, George L. Schmidt, purchased property from the King brothers at the corner of Tremont and Coventry in the late 1920s. Andy’s father, George F., grew up in that house. As the business ventured into restaurant and concession stand territory, the family remained in Upper Arlington. The first restaurant was opened in 1967, not far from the original meatpacking plant. Born in 1955 and one of six siblings, Andy grew up on Brandon Road. He and four other siblings graduated from Upper Arlington High School. Now, he lives right across the street from his old home. “It’s the best community in the city of Columbus,” Andy says. Upper Arlington was once home to a Schmidt’s restaurant, open from 1982 to 1990 on Henderson Road. Since July 2012, the restaurant has again had a local presence in the city, via a food truck that visits every Thursday and Friday. While the truck regularly visited the corner of Northwest Boulevard and Lane Living near Upper Arlington’s 4th of July parade, Andy has celebrated by throwing a party for the past 30 years Avenue, this year, Schmidt’s will in his front yard. work with the city to find a new location.

A Snapshot of … Select UA family-owned businesses King Thompson: Upper Arlington founders and real estate developers Ben and King Thompson went on to open the city’s first real estate company. Caffé DaVinci: Owners Kim and Tina Elsea are well known for DaVinci Ristorante, which was a mainstay of Reed Road. Their current endeavor, Caffé DaVinci, has its home on Tremont Road. Huffman’s Market: Tim and Glenda Huffman’s grocery store in the Tremont Center has long been valued by Upper Arlington residents. Dawson Careers: In 1999, brothers and Upper Arlington residents Chris and David DeCapua started managing their father, Joe’s, recruitment firm, located in Grandview Heights.

Schools Upper Arlington City Schools For nearly 100 years, Upper Arlington schools have been building a tradition of excellence. Educators provide students with the instruction, support, guidance and inspiration to fulfill their academic potential and explore their interests and passions. Our district provides many academic options not available in other public school districts, including a robust business curriculum. The Upper Arlington Chamber works closely with Upper Arlington High School to bring real-world experience to its educational and career development programs. Entrepreneurship Class The high schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s entrepreneurship class allows students to develop a business concept from scratch; apply fundamental business principles in areas such as strategy, marketing, legal and finance; and prepare detailed business plans. Each semester culminates with teams presenting their ideas to a panel of judges from the local business community. Top teams have gone on to participate in statewide business plan competitions, with the opportunity to earn scholarship money for college. Focus on Your Future: 500 UA Freshman Explore Areas of Career Interest Each student gets to choose 3 career cluster areas of interest to explore, and over 35 local professionals volunteer their time to meet with interested students. Columbus State Community College supplies 10 human resources professionals to discuss soft skills with freshmen: the handshake, eye contact, communication skills, etc. The Chamber of Commerce works closely with the schools to provide speakers for each of the 11 career cluster areas.

Civic Organizations The City of Upper Arlington Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) was created to assist the City in the revitalization and enhancement of property, and to advance, encourage and promote economic and civic development for the City. Public and private sector board members serve by appointment and invitation.

Upper Arlington Rotary Club consists of approximately 170 community leaders making a difference locally and globally. The club has contributed more than $1.5 million and more than 250,000 hours of volunteer service since its founding in 1972. The club gathers each Tuesday at noon at the Scioto Country Club in Upper Arlington and is part of Rotary International, an association of more than 22,000 Rotary clubs in 160 countries throughout the world. The Upper Arlington Civic Association’s mission is to plan and execute community events designed to bring families, friends and neighbors together for holiday and civic activities. The UACA is comprised of volunteer directors who raise money to fund events via The Walk (annual door-to-door fundraising drive) and through corporate fundraising activities. Annual events include UA Stage, Easter Candy Hunt, Golden Apple Awards, Memorial Day Run, Upper Arlington 4th of July Parade & Fireworks, Labor Neighbor Day, Golden Bear Scare and Christmas in the Park. This year marks the UACA’s 83rd year.

The Older Adult Resource Group is dedicated to promoting a dignified, healthy quality of life for older adults by advocating for vital services, offering lifelong learning activities, recognizing the continued and varied accomplishments of older adults and being an accessible and trusted community resource to the seniors in the Upper Arlington area. The Older Adult Resource Group presents two senior events each year. Senior Expo and Workshop, held in the spring at the Upper Arlington Public Library, showcases the members of the OARG and presents timely educational seminars. This year’s event, to be held May 11, is “Downsize your home, Upsize your Life” and will include local experts in the fields of downsizing, organizing and retirement living options. Each November, the OARG sponsors the Medicare Update at Upper Arlington Lutheran Church. This event features speakers from the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program.
