he Jewish Reconstructionist movement will make history on October 26, 2014, when Rabbi Deborah Waxman, Ph.D. is inaugurated as the first woman president of both a seminary, the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College (RRC), and a major Jewish movement. This historic event will take place at 2:30 p.m. at The National Museum of American Jewish History (101 South Independence Mall East, Philadelphia), which appropriately currently showcases an exhibit highlighting the first woman rabbis in America. Rabbi Waxman, a 1999 RRC graduate, notes that in the 21st century, as Jewish people choose from a vast array of spiritual, religious and cultural sources to construct their identities, Reconstructionist Judaism offers a distinctive, inclusive path towards meaning and connection. “The conviction that we need not choose between being Jewish and being modern and American – that Jews can craft multifaceted identities that are vibrantly, sustainably Jewish -- is even more relevant today than it was when the movement took shape fifty years ago,” she said. “We can choose from a vast banquet of The Jewish Reconstructionist movement will make history on spiritual, religious and cultural sources, and ReconOctober 26, 2014, when Rabbi Deborah Waxman, Ph.D. is structionist Judaism offers a distinctive way for Jews inaugurated as the first woman president of both a seminary, the – and the people who make their lives with us – to Reconstructionist Rabbinical College (RRC), and a major Jewish find meaning and connection.” movement. Shown are Deborah Waxman and David Roberts. Calling Waxman a visionary leader who is uniquely suited to her new role, David Roberts of St. Louis, MO, chair of the RRC Board of Governors, said that Waxman’s passion and keen intellect combine into a leadership style that empowers and energizes those around her. “With Deborah’s leadership, I am so optimistic about the future of the movement as we continue to strive to meet people’s changing spiritual and communal needs,” Roberts commented. “I can’t imagine a better standard bearer than Deborah—it’s as if her whole career has been preparing her for this role.” Reconstructionist Judaism teaches that “Judaism” is the continuously evolving civilization of the Jewish people, encompassing culture, art, music, food, and everything else that makes up a civilization. With deep roots in tradition, Reconstructionist Jews believe that for Judaism to remain relevant, each generation must “reconstruct” it to meet contemporary emotional and spiritual needs. The fourth largest movement of American Judaism, is headquartered outside Philadelphia and has 107 affiliated congregations throughout the United States and Canada. Reconstructionist Judaism is growing at a time when membership in other religious groups is shrinking. Together, the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College (RRC) and Jewish Reconstructionist Communities (JRC) constitute the Reconstructionist movement. RRC teaches, trains and guides the next generation of rabbis, and JRC provides services and support to Reconstructionist synagogues and communities. MCCC to Host Exhibit “The Symbiotic Relationship A celebration of the empowering creative partnership graduate students, and their collaborative works also will be on display. “The theme of the show was developed to give participating artists an ambiguous starting point from which they could develop and explore relationships for them, as well as the world, and the different aspects of collaborative relationships, said exhibit curator Melinda Houvig, a secondyear graduate student attending Moore for her master’s degree in Fine Art, Studio Practice. The theme will be represented through the myriad dimensions of the words “relationship and collaboration. “Some artists have chosen to examine mutually beneficial relationships, while others examined parasitic relationships, which also are forms of symbiosis. It’s going to be a very eclectic show, and I’m truly excited, Houvig said. Houvig has a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from West Chester University and has worked as a professional fine art model for colleges and non-profit art centers throughout the Main Line area. “I hope the exhibit will broaden students’ perspectives and the community’s perception of graduate work in the art world. It’s multidimensional, research-rich, passion driven and open to so many avenues of experimentation. The BFA is no longer the stopping point of an art degree, Houvig said. Cathy Hozack, a local artist, is showing her work in the Bodine Lobby at Bryn Mawr Hospital through January 8. ryn Mawr Hospital’s Women’s Board is bringing local art to the Bodine Lobby, at Bryn Mawr Hospital. Local artists feature their work for a few months in the Bodine Lobby, with 20 percent of all sales benefitting the hospital. The artwork is enjoyed by patients, visitors and employees. Cathy Hozack, a local artist, is showing her work through January 8. A reception was held for the public on September 7, hosted by the Women’s Board. Hozack’s work focuses on abstract landscape. Her works are in many private collections and are often shown in international galleries. Hozack, who was diagnosed with epilepsy at age 5, is a featured artist for Sparks of Creativity, an international art exhibit at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, with works by artists with epilepsy. She also presented at the Asian & Oceanic Epilepsy Congress in Melbourne in 2010. Her work has been on three covers of “Epilepsy & Behavior” and has been used by a pharmaceutical company to promote an epilepsy medication. “The Women’s Board is proud to partner with Cathy to bring the healing powers of her art to our patients and our community,” stated Liz Clothier and Cackie Rogers, administrators of the Bodine Lobby Art Project.
