Photo/Joanne Davis She is a young, struggling African-American single mother, he a white, married, middle-aged wealthy financier. As their story progresses, an electrifying disclosure foreshadows dire consequences, and the horrific life-changing decisions that the two make come into focus before our eyes. The play, as it weaves a twisted web of moral ambiguity, becomes an out-and-out thriller, as well as a deeply perceptive commentary on racial and class inequality in America! Critical analysis has run the gamut of acclaim: “… [this play] … concerns race, but so much more … a powerful story about characters struggling with titanic decisions …” – Broad Street Review.com; “… a no-holds-barred exposition of race and privilege in 21st century America.” – WHYY Newsworks; “… a play with guts. … This one goes for the jugular.” – Chicago Tribune. Bruce Graham (b. 1956), Philadelphia native, began his career as a playwright with Burkie, in 1984, at the Philadelphia Festival Theatre for New Plays (PFT). He has authored over a dozen full-length plays, performed throughout the country (among others, Moon Over the Brewery, Belmont Avenue Social Club, Minor Demons, Coyote on a Fence, According to Goldberg, Something Intangible, and Rizzo). The Stagecrafters has produced a number of his plays, most recently Any Given Monday in 2017. Graham has also returned to the stage, appearing in Lost in Yonkers, Laughter on the 23rd Floor, and Any Given Monday, among others. White Guy on the Bus was first produced by Delaware Theatre Company in 2016, then transferred to 59E59 Theaters in Manhattan (NYC) in 2017 for a continuing run Off-Broadway. More recently, it has also seen production at a number of regional theaters. Production performance dates are February 7 through February 23: Thurs., Fri., Sat. at 8 p.m., and Sun. at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at $21 Online (no service charge), $25 At-door. M ONTGOMERY E ARLY L EARNING C ENTERS C HANGES N AME TO W ONDERSPRING ontgomery Early Learning Centers, a provider of highquality, safe, convenient, and affordable early childhood education throughout Greater Philadelphia, has changed its name to Wonderspring. A leader in early education for more than 50 years, the organization will continue delivering an innovative, evidence-based curriculum rooted in the latest research on how children learn best. “We have a long, successful history of providing the highest quality care and early childhood education across the region. However, our former name and logo no longer truly reflect the learning opportunities we provide or even the geography we serve,” said Surge Ghosh, President of the Wonderspring Board of Directors. The rebranding, which aligns the name and logo with the organization’s core educational philosophy, was funded fully with grants from The Philadelphia Foundation and corporate partners including BBD, Exude, Metcalfe, NSM Insurance Group, N Property Group and TDS Networks “The name Wonderspring represents our approach to early education, as we nurture children through the most critical learning years of their lives,” said Ann O’Brien, CEO. “Children are learning all the time, in every interaction with teachers and each other. Cultivating wonder in young children and sparking their natural curiosity are fundamental to cultivating life-long learners, which is the most important thing we do.” Wonderspring’s focus on quality is evidenced by the fact that all its centers have Keystone Star 4 ratings as and that it is nationally recognized by accreditation organizations including National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and Council on Accreditation (COA). Wonderspring focuses on the whole child from infancy through Kindergarten. With its emergent curriculum, Wonderspring’s teaching methodology is shaped by the interests of the children in the classroom in order to create the most meaningful learning experiences. “Our mission and value to the community remain. We are the same provider of high-quality education that our families have come to know and trust,” added Zakiyyah Boone, Chief Program Officer. “But we need to show that our approach is more up-to-date than the old name and logo indicated. Our 21st century approach to learning has led us to a new name and brand identity that reflect the innovative programming we deliver.” Wonderspring operates in 10 locations throughout the region and will open a brand-new early learning center, New Market West, at 59th and Market streets in Philadelphia in Spring 2020. In addition to its early education centers, Wonderspring offers school-age programs to ensure children receive educational experiences and care before and after the school day. The organization’s summer camp for children entering Kindergarten through entering 6th grade offers weekly themed sessions that provide opportunities for fun, exploration and learning throughout the summer. The Blackbird Society Orchestra’s quartet lineup kicks off the spring season of Friday Night Live on February 21, 2020, in the ballroom at Community Arts Center, 414 Plush Mill Road, Wallingford, PA, at 7 p.m. Admission is $15, $10 for CAC members. For information, visit www.communityartscenter.org. Road, Wallingford, PA. Doors open at 7 p.m., complimentary snacks are provided and attendees are also welcome to bring their own food and beverages. All ages welcome. Minors must be accompanied by an adult and guests must be 21 to bring or consume alcohol. Admission is $15 per person, $10 for Community Arts Center members and free to CAC benefactors. Children 12 and under are $5. Blackbird Society is one of the longest running and most authentic 1920s jazz bands in the region. Founded in 1997 by guitarist Richard Barnes, the band had one simple mission—to preserve the music of an era forgotten, the “Roaring 20s,” or the “Jazz Age” as it is referred to by music lovers. Richard and the band present an extremely authentic take on the jazz of the 1920s and 30s that is accessible and timeless. Attendees will feel they have been transported back in time. Richard is very knowledgeable about the history of the music and regularly shares short anecdotes about some of the songs and the early jazz musicians who wrote them throughout the performance. This event will be held in the historic ballroom on the second floor of the CAC (FNL is usually held in the larger Duke Art Gallery). As such, seating is limited and advance tickets are recommended. Due to these space limitations, there will be no visual artists creating live during the event this month. Instead, guests are invited to visit the special ceramics exhibition in the Duke Art Gallery during intermission. The exhibition, The Art of Wood-Fired Ceramics: Featuring Peter Callas, features large ceramic sculptures on pedestals throughout the gallery as well as a collection of over 150 tea bowls from artists from around the world. CAC Executive Director Paul Downie said, “As we enter the 2020s, we look back at a rich music tradition that arose 100 years ago. We’re excited that BSO will recreate 1920s jazz music note for note in our intimate 1892 ballroom because it was originally a music room. It’s quite possible that people 100 years ago were enjoying the same music that we’ll enjoy in that space at Friday Night Live.” Community Arts Center is located at 414 Plush Mill Road, Wallingford, PA 19086. For information or driving directions, contact the Arts Center at 610-566-1713, visit https://communityartscenter.org/, or follow them on Facebook.

Emerging Philadelphia brings together three solo shows by emerging Philadelphia artists Shona McAndrew, Matt A. Osborn and Stacey Lee Webber, and represents a glimpse of the range of materials, experiences and backgrounds embodied by our city’s community of creative thinkers. The artists create individual gallery experiences that speak to their respective artistic inquiries. By presenting the artists’ works in the same space, the exhibition invites viewers to consider the range of techniques through which contemporary works are realized. Visitors can immerse themselves in Moore’s interconnected public galleries while exploring themes of identity, process and imagination. “The Galleries position Moore as one of the best art and design colleges in the country,” said Cecelia Fitzgibbon, president of Moore College of Art Shona McAndrew, “Sofia,” 2016, paper mâché, aluminum, fabric and acrylic. 29 x 46 x 31 in. Courtesy of the artist. & Design. “Through exhibitions like Emerging Philadelphia, we serve our surrounding cultural community, and we also serve our students with the opportunity to take part in a high-level examination of contemporary art.” “This show honors Moore’s commitment to providing an accessible platform for emerging artists and designers to showcase their work in a museum setting,” said Gabrielle Lavin Suzenski, Rochelle F. Levy Director, The Galleries at Moore. “Philadelphia’s cultural sector is thriving and our goal is to engage emerging talent through gallery programming that highlights the young network of professionals who are working to keep the visual arts flourishing in our region.”
Shona McAndrew’s sculptures and paintings challenge the historically rigid social expectations of the female form and present visually accurate representations of women who are secure with their shapes, sizes and surroundings. Considering her personal experiences as a plus-size woman, McAndrew’s works portray characters who are caught performing everyday tasks—women appear frozen in their intimate, most private moments with no concern for the viewers’ perceptions, opinions or expectations. McAndrew received an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BA in Psychology and Fine Arts from Brandeis University. Matt A. Osborn’s paintings and drawings combine real and imagined representations of characters exploring interStacey Lee Webber, “The Craftsmen Series: Trench Shovel” (detail), 2019, soldered copper pennies, brass. 28 x 7 x 3 in. His use of colorful hybrid human-animal-monster imagery is often juxtaposed with a word or words expressing sentimental thoughts that create a fantastical dream world—one that is palpably rooted in the hard truths of reality. Osborn received an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and a BFA from Ohio State University. Stacey Lee Webber presents new and recent works that are made out of manipulated U.S. paper money and coins. This is Webber’s first major solo exhibition in Philadelphia and the selected works demonstrate her process of intentional-
ly and laboriously destroying, cutting and stitching pennies and one-dollar bills to elevate their otherwise minuscule value. The finished artworks question the significance of hand labor involved in their creation rather than taking their material worth at face value. Webber received an MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and a BFA from Ball State University. The Galleries at Moore’s exhibitions and programs – which are all free and open to the public – create community through dialogue and participation, and inspire an appreciation for the visual arts as a vital force in shaping contemporary culture. The Galleries at Moore are located at 1916 Race Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103. Gallery Hours: Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Closed Sunday and all academic and legal holidays. The Carol H. Axelrod Memorial Blood Drive at The Shipley School he Carol H. Axelrod Memorial Blood Drive is once again joining forces with The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr to encourage blood donation and save lives this winter! On Friday, February 28, Shipley will host the blood drive in Yarnall Gymnasium from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The drive will be open to the public, and all presenting donors will receive a gift bag and a t-shirt. Donation appointments can be scheduled at www.chablooddrive.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS (mention sponsor code “Shipley”). The blood drive honors the memory of Main Line resident Carol Axelrod, the grandmother of a current Shipley student. Carol became dependent on blood products while being treated for multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Because blood was available every time she needed a transfusion, she was able to celebrate her 60th birthday and share special events with family members before she passed away in 2008. Her family founded the memorial blood drive later that year, with a mission of enabling other patients to spend more time with their loved ones by furthering understanding of the importance of donating blood. The blood drives held in Carol’s memory, which now take place four times each year in different locations, have collected enough blood products to have helped nearly 14,000 patients. This will mark the fourth year that Shipley and the CHA Memorial Blood Drive have partnered to save lives. There is currently a critical need to replenish blood supplies in our region, and one blood donation can save three lives. Thank you for scheduling your lifesaving blood donation today!

PHL17’s Jenna Meissner is the next speaker at Realtor Michelle Leonard’s Tasty Talks on Wednesday, February 26, at 12:30 p.m. at Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant, 60 Greenfield Avenue, in Ardmore, PA. community will be welcomed with open arms to Iron Hill!” Realtor Michelle Leonard is over the moon to announce that PHL17’s morning traffic anchor Jenna Meissner is her next speaker. Jenna’s charity for this event is The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia, a youth development program that introduces the game of golf to underprivileged kids who otherwise may never have the opportunity to play golf! Jenna chose this organization in honor of her dad who recently and unexpectedly passed. Golf was his favorite thing to do! Hear Jenna Meissner’s Talk on Wednesday, February 26, at 12:30 at Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant, 60 Greenfield Avenue, in Ardmore, PA 19003. Jenna Meissner joined the PHL17 Morning News team in May 2015 and has worked her way up the ranks starting as an intern and later a production assistant, to her current role as the morning traffic anchor. Born and raised in Media, PA, Jenna attended the Academy of Notre Dame in Villanova for high school and went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude from Temple University’s Lew Klein College of Media & Communication where she studied journalism with a specialization in broadcast. During her time at Temple, Jenna received a number of broadcast awards and was inducted into the National Journalism Honors Society, Kappa Tau Alpha. In addition to appearing on air every morning from 5 to 9 a.m., Jenna also does a lot of work behind the scenes like editing visuals and audio, producing news packages and writing for the morning broadcast. When Jenna’s not working, you can find her out and about exploring all of the new hot spots in Philadelphia, or spending time with her growing family. Realtor Michelle Leonard’s Tasty Talks event is exactly as it sounds. Iron Hill’s Chef Josh Pham and his amazing culinary team are whipping up a “Tasty” lunch, complete with appetizers, a family-style lunch with 3 options, and dessert. Jenna will “Talk” about making a difference. Tasty Talks is open to the public. You do not have to belong to this group to attend. Realtor and tastemaker Michelle Leonard founded and hosts the successful Tasty Talks where media celebrities talk about making a difference. She also hosts Dine & Dish, a dinner series designed to bring together and connect members of our community with our most inspiring leaders. She also loves sharing about the best restaurants, best places to go and best people to work with. Michelle loves food, fashion, homes and travel adventures. Follow Michelle on Instagram @thehatlady507. Named after the historic Revolutionary War landmark in Delaware, where General George Washington battled the British, Iron Hill is among the most enduringly successful craft brewers in the United States. Its 22-year consecutive medal-winning streak at national and international competitions is the longest by any independent craft brewery. Founded by home brewers Kevin Finn, Mark Edelson and restaurateur Kevin Davies in Newark, DE in 1996, Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant has blossomed from one restaurant and brewery to 16 locations up and down the East Coast, including Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and South Carolina. Each brewery/restaurant has their own scratch kitchen and craft brewery, allowing individual chefs and brewers the creativity to pair the freshest ingredients with the highest quality grains and hops. Visit www.ironhillbrewery.com/ardmore-pa. To reserve your seat(s) call Iron Hill Ardmore at 610-228-2280 and give them your credit card. Tickets to Jenna’s Tasty Talk February 26 are $25 on or before February 24 paid in advance ($30 at the door, if seats are available), and includes hors d’oeuvres, a hearty familystyle “craft” lunch, dessert, tax, tip and charitable contribution.
